US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (August 5) targeted Russian President Vladimir Putin, after he again warned India that the US will raise the tariff on India in the next '24 hours over Russian oil import. As he pointed to Russia, Trump said that the drop in energy prices could make Putin halt the war in Ukraine. While speaking to CNBC’s Squawk Box, the US president stressed that if energy goes down, Putin will stop killing people. “If energy goes down enough, Putin is going to stop killing people,” he said. Further slamming Russia’s economy, Trump said, “If you get energy down, another $10 a barrel, he’s going to have no choice because his economy stinks.” Trump further repeated that he would increase US tariffs on India soon and maybe in the next 24 hours over their import of Russian oil, and since “they’re fueling the war machine.” “They have the highest tariff of anybody ... They paid $600bn, and because of that, I reduced their tariffs from thirty percent down to fifteen percent, and a couple of countries came, ‘How come the EU is paying less than us’, and I said, well, because they gave me $600bn,” he said. “And that’s a gift, that’s not like, you know, a loan … they gave us $600bn that we can invest in anything we want,” Trump added. Trump further stressed that the EU has been “ripping us” for so many years, and it's time that they pay up.

While speaking to CNBC’s Squawk Box, the US president stressed that if energy goes down, Putin will stop killing people, adding that he will have no choice because his economy stinks.

We settled on 25%, but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially over the next 24 hours because they’re buying Russian oil, they’re fueling the war machine, and if they going to do that, I’m not going to be happy,” he said. After the reports that the White House is preparing an executive order to put pressure on big banks in the US for their discrimination against conservatives, US President Donald Trump subtly confirmed it, saying the banks certainly did discriminate. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has jumped on to the controversy around actor Sydney Sweeney’s new American Eagle jeans campaign. Trump has called Sweeney the ‘HOTTEST’ while taking a swipe at pop icon Taylor Swift-whom he declared as ‘no longer hot’. Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social and praised Sweeney, whom he claimed is a Republican.
Trump backs Sydney Sweeney amid American Eagle ad controversy
"Sydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the 'HOTTEST' ad out there. It's for American Eagle, and the jeans are 'flying off the shelves'. Go get 'em Sydney!," Trump posted. In the same post, the US President aimed at other ‘woke’ brands and public figures and called Jaguar as ‘stupid’. "Who wants to buy a Jaguar after looking at that disgraceful ad? Trump's post on Truth Social

Trump’s post was an addition to the list of brands and individuals that he has been publicly criticizing on the platform. Trump particularly seems to be targeting those aligned as liberal or progressive.
What is the controversy around Sydney Sweeney’s latest ad?
The controversy around Sweeney began after American Eagle launched a campaign featuring her with the tagline: "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans". The brand seems to have indulged in light-hearted pun, but the tagline was interpreted as a dog-whistle to white supremacy and eugenics. The backlash has been swift ever since. While Sweeney herself has not responded to the controversy, she got support from the brand. On Friday, American Eagle issued a statement defending the campaign. The brand stated that the tagline "was always about the jeans". The company added, "Her jeans. Her story. We'll continue to celebrate how everyone wears their AE jeans with confidence, their way. Great jeans look good on everyone".

US President Donald Trump on Monday issued a fresh warning to India of increased tariffs over buying Russian oil. The threat comes just a week after Trump announced a 25 per cent tariff on India. In a new post in Truth Social, Trump cited India’s close ties with Russia as the key reason behind the tariff revision. “India is not only buying massive amounts of Russian Oil, they are then, for much of the Oil purchased, selling it on the Open Market for big profits. They don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian War Machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the Tariff paid by India to the USA. Thank you for your attention to this matter!!!” Donald Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social.

Trump had last week issued a verbal attack on Truth Social targeting India, and called on both New Delhi and Moscow to “take their dead economies and go down together”. “I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,” Trump said in the post on Truth Social. “We have done very little business with India, their Tariffs are too high, among the highest in the World," he added.
‘We desire a fair and representative global order, not one dominated by a few’
Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday reiterated the need for a fair and multipolar global order, saying, “Our collective desire is to see a fair and representative global order, not one dominated by a few.” Jaishankar made the remarks amid global trade tensions, including US tariff threats and pressure on India’s oil trade with Russia.

Speaking at the BIMSTEC Traditional Music Festival in Delhi titled ‘SaptaSur: Seven Nations, One Melody’, Jaishankar linked cultural traditions to the broader vision of global balance. “We live in complicated and uncertain times. Our collective desire is to see a fair and representative global order, not one dominated by a few. That quest is often articulated as political or economic rebalancing,” he said. While Jaishankar’s remarks did not refer directly to the economic and diplomatic challenges, including concerns over possible US tariffs and warnings related to India’s ongoing oil trade with Russia, his emphasis on sovereignty, tradition, and multipolarity echoed India’s current diplomatic positioning.

US President Donald Trump again criticised Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Monday and said the jobs report last week showing a slump in hirings was ‘rigged’. Trump’s claim came in his post on his social media platform, Truth Social, a couple of days after he announced the removal of McEntarfer under whose watch the official report was released. “Last week’s jobs report was rigged, just like the numbers prior to the presidential election were rigged. That’s why, in both cases, there was massive, record setting revisions in favour of the Radical Left Democrats,” Trump posted on Truth Social. The monthly report showed only 73,000 job additions in July, while stating that 258,000 fewer jobs were created in May and June than previously reported. BLS had earlier projected 125,000 job additions in May and 147,000 in June but downgraded them to 19,000 and 14,000, respectively. In the revision, the report showed a marginal uptick in July’s unemployment rate to 4.2% from 4.1% in the preceding month.

“Those big adjustments were made to cover up and level out the FAKE political numbers that were CONCOCTED in order to make a great Republican Success look less stellar!!! I will pick an exceptional replacement (sic),” Trump said. McEntarfer, who assumed the charge of labour bureau in January 2024, was nominated in the tenure of former president Joe Biden. Her appointment was confirmed by the US Senate, which had approved the move by a vote of 86:8. Among those who voted in her favour was JD Vance, the vice president in the Trump administration. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told CBS that Trump had “real concerns” about the BLS data, while Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, said the president “is right to call for new leadership”.The BLS compiles the closely watched employment report as well as consumer and producer price data.

In its first response to US President Donald Trump’s order on repositioning of US nuclear submarines, the Kremlin said on Monday that everyone should be “very, very careful” about nuclear rhetoric and said it was not looking to get into a public argument with Trump. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Monday, “In this case, it is obvious that American submarines are already on combat duty. This is an ongoing process, that’s the first thing.” “But in general, of course, we would not want to get involved in such a controversy and would not want to comment on it in any way,” he added. “Of course, we believe that everyone should be very, very careful with nuclear rhetoric.” Peskov, however, played down the significance of Trump’s announcement last Friday that he had ordered two nuclear subs to be moved to “the appropriate regions” in reaction to former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev’s comment about the risk of war between the nuclear-armed adversaries.
‘Trump’s statement not an escalation in nuclear tension’
Peskov said that Russia did not see Trump’s statement as an escalation in nuclear tension.“We do not believe that we are talking about any escalation now. Trump has been vocal about his increasing frustration with Putin of late after Russia stepped up the ferocity of its bombings on Ukrainian cities after calls between them. Besides, three sessions of direct peace talks in Turkey yielded no progress beyond exchanges of prisoners and war.

US President Donald Trump's top aide Stephen Miller on Sunday (Aug 3) accused India of "financing" Russia's war in Ukraine by the nation's continued purchase of oil from Moscow. This comes as the United States continues to escalate pressure on New Delhi to stop buying Russian oil. On Friday, a US tariff of 25 per cent on Indian products also went into effect. Trump has further threatened India and other nations that buy oil from Russia with a 100 per cent tariff unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine.
India to keep buying oil from Russia
Meanwhile, on Saturday (Aug 2), sources in the Indian government told Reuters that New Delhi will keep purchasing oil from Moscow despite US threats. Calling the imports "long-term oil contracts", one unnamed source said that it was "not so simple to just stop buying overnight." Another Indian government official who also chose to stay anonymous noted that India's purchase of Russian crude has helped avoid a global surge in oil prices.

Trump has further threatened India and other nations that buy oil from Russia with a 100 per cent tariff unless Moscow reaches a major peace deal with Ukraine. India to keep buying oil from Russia Meanwhile, on Saturday (Aug 2), sources in the Indian government told Reuters that New Delhi will keep purchasing oil from Moscow despite US threats. Calling the imports "long-term oil contracts", one unnamed source said that it was "not so simple to just stop buying overnight." Another Indian government official who also chose to stay anonymous noted that India's purchase of Russian crude has helped avoid a global surge in oil prices.

Stephen Miller, the deputy chief of staff at the White House and one of Trump's most influential aides, during an interview, said that the US president has "very clearly" told India that it was "not acceptable for India to continue financing this war by purchasing the oil from Russia".

Top White House officials defended the move to fire the head of the Bureau of Labour Statistics by US President Donald Trump on Sunday (August 3). The White House economic advisers pushed back against the criticism of the American president's action. The critics said that Trump's decision could undermine confidence in official US economic data. The Trade Representative of the US, Jamieson Greer, told CBS that Trump had "real concerns" about the data. At the same time, Kevin Hassett, director of the National Economic Council, said the president "is right to call for new leadership." Speaking to Fox News, Hassett said that the main concern was Friday's BLS report of net downward revisions showing 258,000 fewer jobs had been created in May and June than previously reported. He said that Trump administration needs "fresh set of eyes.” The American president accused the BLS Commissioner Erika McEntarfer of faking the jobs numbers without providing any evidence of data manipulation. When I was commissioner, we had a 500,000 job revision during President Trump's first term," Beach said on CNN's "State of the Union. "And why do we do that? Because firms are created or firms go out of business, and we don't really know that during the course of our of the year, until we reconcile against a real full count of all the businesses," he added.

The US Office of Special Counsel has launched an investigation into Jack Smith, the former special counsel who brought two federal criminal cases against President Donald Trump, according to reports published in US media on Saturday (Aug 2). The inquiry, first reported by The New York Times, will examine whether Smith violated the Hatch Act—a law that bars federal employees from engaging in partisan political activity while on the job. Republican Senator Tom Cotton reportedly requested the probe, alleging that Smith's prosecution decisions may have been politically motivated and timed to influence the 2024 election.
Who is Jack Smith?
Jack Smith, appointed special counsel in 2022, led two high-profile federal investigations against Trump: one for attempting to overturn the 2020 election and another for mishandling classified documents after leaving office. Trump denied all charges and repeatedly claimed the cases were politically motivated, while alleging that the Justice Department was being weaponised against him.It must be noted that neither case reached trial. After Trump won the 2024 election, the Justice Department, citing its long-standing policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents, dropped both cases. Smith resigned shortly afterwards, before Trump could act on his campaign vow to fire him.Importantly, the Office of Special Counsel investigating Smith is not part of the Department of Justice, despite sharing a similar name. Its role is to monitor the conduct of federal employees and enforce federal employment rules—not oversee criminal prosecutions. It cannot charge Smith with any crime but could refer its findings to the DOJ, which has the power to prosecute.
What is the Hatch Act?
The Hatch Act, enacted in 1939, regulates the political activities of federal employees and certain state and local government workers. If found guilty under the Hatch act Smith may face the harshest penalty under the law. The most severe penalty under the Hatch Act is removal from federal service, which does not apply to Smith as he no longer holds a government position.
Trump's political retribution continues?
Since returning to office in January, Trump has acted swiftly to target former officials and critics. His administration has revoked security clearances, cut protective details, and defunded institutions he claims worked against him. In recent weeks, the FBI opened criminal investigations into former FBI director James Comey and ex-CIA chief John Brennan—both prominent Trump critics. Comey's daughter Maurene, a federal prosecutor involved in the Jeffrey Epstein case, was also abruptly dismissed—raising further questions about political retribution inside the Trump administration.

Baloch leader Mir Yar Baloch has issued a warning to the United States President Donald Trump in an open letter, telling him that he had been “gravely misled” about the “massive oil reserves” in Pakistan by General Asim Munir and Islamabad’s diplomatic channels. The reserves of oil, natural gas, copper, lithium, uranium, and rare earth minerals are not located in Pakistan and belong to the “Republic of Balochistan”, he wrote. “Your recognition of the vast oil and mineral reserves in the region is indeed accurate. President Donald Trump on Friday ordered the firing of the head of the Bureau of Labour Statistics, hours after a shocking government report showed that hiring had slowed down significantly over the past three months. Trump took to Truth Social and attacked Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the BLS. He claimed that the country’s jobs reports “are being produced by a Biden appointee” and ordered his administration to terminate her.“We need accurate Jobs Numbers,” Trump wrote. “She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes.” An official in the Trump administration confirmed to NBC News that McEntarfer had indeed been fired shortly after the post.

The BLS on Friday morning reported that the US economy added just 73,000 jobs in July, well below estimates. It also said it had revised the May and June numbers lower by more than 200,000 jobs combined. President Joe Biden had nominated McEntarfer in July 2023 and she was confirmed by the Senate in an 86-to-8 vote (with six members not voting) in January 2024 in an overwhelming bipartisan support. In the last 20 years, McEntarfer has worked in the Census Bureau, Treasury Department and on the White House’s Council of Economic Advisers. The BLS revises economic data such as the jobs report, GDP figures and inflation data as a routine since there can often be lags in data collection due to the scale of the US economy and response rates to surveys. These lags do not imply any manipulation or wrongdoing. Typically, the politicisation of economic data and potential interference with it by political appointees is seen in non-democratic countries like Russia or China. The economic data of the United States has always been considered the gold standard due to the independence typically given to agencies collecting it.

In the post, President Trump implied that the BLS commissioner, longtime federal employee Erika McEntarfer, manipulated the data “for political purposes” and claimed that the country’s jobs reports “are being produced by a Biden appointee”.

He claimed that the country’s jobs reports “are being produced by a Biden appointee” and ordered his administration to terminate her. “We need accurate Jobs Numbers,” Trump wrote. “She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can’t be manipulated for political purposes.” An official in the Trump administration confirmed to NBC News that McEntarfer had indeed been fired shortly after the post.

In the post, President Trump implied that the BLS commissioner, longtime federal employee Erika McEntarfer, manipulated the data “for political purposes” and claimed that the country’s jobs reports “are being produced by a Biden appointee”.

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he has ordered the deployment of two nuclear submarines to “appropriate regions” in response to Russia’s nuclear threats. Trump had been trading barbs with former president Dmitry Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, over the last few days. “Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social.“Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter!,” Trump added in the post.

Donald Trump’s post on Truth Social

The development comes after some exchange escalated on social media between Trump and Medvedev hours earlier. Trump had said Medvedev should “watch his words” in a midnight post, and Medvedev reminded him of Russia’s nuclear capabilities left over from its Soviet days. Medvedev accused Trump of engaging in a “game of ultimatums”. Moscow, which has set out its own terms for peace in Ukraine, has shown no sign that it will comply with Trump’s new deadline of 10 days. Medvedev has emerged as one of the Kremlin’s most outspoken anti-Western hawks since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. After Trump set a new deadline for a ceasefire with Russia, Medvedev responded by warning him that it was a step towards war and added, “Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!”In response, Trump called Medvedev a “failed former President” and warned him to “watch his words” as he’s entering a “dangerous territory”.Medvedev also fired back on Friday and alluded to Russia’s “Dead Hand” automated strike system—which purportedly could unleash a full-scale nuclear response in the event Russia was struck first.Medvedev also mocked Trump, saying, “If a few words from the former President of Russia can provoke such a jittery reaction from the mighty President of the United States, then Russia must be completely in the right.”

It is the first military step taken by Trump to deter Russia since returning to the White House and comes a week before his deadline for President Vladimir Putin to agree to a ceasefire or face sanctions.

Donald Trump's former lawyer, who represented the American president in three out of four criminal cases against him, is now a judge in a federal appeals court. He even said that after Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Jimmy Fallon too will face similar heat.
Donald Trump reacts on the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s show
While most pointed out that The Late Show was cancelled due to political pressure, Trump said it was due to lack of talent. “Everybody is saying that I was solely responsible for the firing of Stephen Colbert from CBS, Late Night,” Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social, on Tuesday night. “That is not true! The reason he was fired was a pure lack of TALENT, and the fact that this deficiency was costing CBS $50 Million Dollars a year in losses — And it was only going to get WORSE!”

He added that other late-night shows, including NBC’s The Tonight Show and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live, will follow suit. “Next up will be an even less talented Jimmy Kimmel, and then, a weak, and very insecure, Jimmy Fallon,” Trump wrote. “The only real question is, who will go first? Show Biz and Television is a very simple business. If you get Ratings, you can say or do anything. If you don’t, you always become a victim. Colbert became a victim to himself, the other two will follow.”
Jimmy Kimmel reacts to Trump’s post
Kimmel, who is currently on vacation and has entrusted guest hosts to take over the show in his absence, responded to Trump’s post on Instagram. “I know you’re busy Sharpie-ing the Epstein files, but this seems like a weird way to tell people to watch Matt Damon and Ken Jennings on an all-new Who Wants to Be a Millionaire tomorrow night at 8|7c on @ABC,” Kimmel wrote.

The Late Show cancelled
Earlier this month, CBS announced it will end The Late Show, hosted by Colbert over the last decade, in May 2026. The channel stated that the decision was purely due to financial issues. “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night,” the network said in a statement. “It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.” Colbert has been known to be a vocal critic of Trump and has called the US President often on his show. Three days prior to the cancellation, the host aired a segment calling out CBS’s parent company, Paramount, for its $16M settlement with Trump, a deal that Colbert dubbed “a big, fat bribe.” The next day, Skydance CEO David Ellison met with the FCC to discuss the company’s proposed merger with Paramount. Following the cancellation, the FCC approved the merger. Colbert started hosting The Late Show, taking the baton from David Letterman, in 2015. He had earlier hosted the news satire show The Colbert Report on Comedy Central. As of July, Colbert has hosted the show for 10 seasons on CBS.

Donald Trump took to Truth Social to deny his role in the cancellation of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Trump said that show was cancelled due to ‘lack of talent’ and added Jimmy Kimmel and Jimmy Fallon's shows would face similar fate soon.

Hours after the Manhattan shooting that killed five people on Monday (July 28), New York Governor Kathy Hochul has called for a national assault weapons ban, noting that the suspect used an AR-15 style assault rifle, a commonly used weapon in mass shootings in the US. The New York governor called for Congress to pass a national assault weapons ban following yesterday's shooting. "New York has some of the strongest gun laws in the nation. We banned assault weapons. We strengthened our Red Flag Law. We closed dangerous loopholes. But our laws only go so far when an AR-15 can be obtained in a state with weak gun laws and brought into New York to commit mass murder," Hochul said. "The time to act is now. The American people are tired of thoughts and prayers. They deserve action. Congress must summon the courage to stand up to the gun lobby and finally pass a national assault weapons ban before more innocent lives are stolen," Hochul added. Hochul further expressed condolences, saying, "My heart is with his loved ones, his NYPD family and every victim of this tragedy." The shooting unfolded near the intersection of Park Avenue and East 51st Street, an area home to several five-star business hotels and corporate offices, including the headquarters of Colgate-Palmolive and KPMG.
Trump condemns Manhattan shooting
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday reacted to the Manhattan shooting that resulted in the deaths of five people.
