US President Donald Trump is once again on his way to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. His journey was briefly interrupted after Air Force One had to turn back to the United States because of a “minor electrical issue.” Despite the delay, Trump is now back in the air on a different aircraft and is expected to reach Davos, where his comments on Greenland and foreign policy have already stirred unease among US allies.

The Canadian military has developed a model response to a US invasion, the Globe and Mail reported Tuesday, as President Donald Trump again muses online about a takeover of Canada.

In the latest exchange between US President Donald Trump and the Iranian authorities, Trump said that if he were ever assassinated US would blow up Iran. “They shouldn’t be doing it, but I’ve left notification. Anything ever happens, we’re going to blow the whole — the whole country is going to get blown up,” said Trump in an interview with News Nation, in response to threats from Iran's leaders, threats and taunts of assassinating him.He took a dig at his predecessor, Biden, for his failure to respond strongly, for not saying anything when Iran threatened to assassinate him earlier. President Joe Biden “should have said something”, he continued, “A president has to defend a president. If I were here, and they were making that threat to somebody—not even a president, but somebody, as they did with me—I would absolutely hit them so hard.” He again added that he left instructions for such scenarios, “Anything happens, they’re gonna wipe ’em off the face of this Earth.”

He then went on to discuss his further geopolitical ambitions. He stressed how Greenland is needed for his supposed ‘Golden Dome’ defence plan. He then bragged about having some secret weapons, “We have weapons that nobody knows about. It’s probably good not to talk about it, but we have some amazing weapons.”Earlier on Tuesday, in response to threats to Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iranian General Abolfazl Shekarchi said, “Trump knows that if any hand of aggression is extended toward our leader, we not only cut that hand but also we will set fire to their world.” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also threatened, “Our powerful armed forces have no qualms about firing back with everything we have if we come under renewed attack." These exchanges come as the US aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln is moving from the Strait of Malacca towards the Arabian Sea and the Persian Gulf, and several reports suggest USS Nimitz is also moving within striking distance of Iran as military buildup continues in the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump has landed in Switzerland on Wednesday (January 21) for the World Economic Forum 2026, being held in Davos. Along with Trump, Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt were also seen. Earlier, Donald Trump's Air Force One was forced to turn back shortly after takeoff due to what officials described as a minor electrical malfunction. Upon landing, the US president took aim at European leaders ahead of his planned appearance at the World Economic Forum in Davos. However, officials attending the Swiss gathering responded with an unusually unified front. Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney warned that the US-led global order is facing a fundamental breakdown, while French President Emmanuel Macron pledged resistance against what he described as political intimidation. That show of unity prompted criticism from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who urged European leaders to calm down and wait to hear Trump’s message directly. Speaking to reporters in Davos, Bessent warned against what he called automatic hostility toward the US president. Trump had been scheduled to address the forum at 2:30 pm local time, but following his delayed arrival, the timing of his speech remained uncertain. Earlier, Trump said he planned to hold several discussions in Davos focused on Greenland, an issue that has created the most serious strain between Washington and its European allies in decades. When asked how far he might go to obtain the Arctic territory from Denmark, Trump responded cryptically: “You’ll find out.” Demonstrating opposition to Trump’s stance, protesters carved the phrase “No Kings” into the snow above Davos overnight, echoing a popular slogan from US demonstrations. Also Read: ‘If there were to be an escalation...’: Greenland PM urges to prepare for a possible invasion amid Trump’s quest to takeover island Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland’s vast mineral resources and strategic position are critical to US and NATO security, particularly as Arctic ice melts and competition with Russia and China intensifies. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte acknowledged growing strains within the alliance but called for careful diplomacy. Rutte, often described as adept at managing relations with Trump, said tensions were undeniable but manageable.

He also rejected Trump’s long-standing claims that NATO allies would fail to support the United States in a crisis. “I tell him, yes they would,” Rutte said. France added to the pushback by proposing a NATO military exercise in Greenland and offering to participate, according to Macron’s office. The French president had earlier criticized Washington’s attempts to pressure Europe and condemned Trump’s threats to impose tariffs on allies over their support for Denmark. European leaders have warned of retaliatory trade measures after Trump threatened tariffs of up to 25 percent on eight European countries backing Copenhagen. Trump dismissed the idea that Europe could effectively retaliate, saying any trade action against the US would rebound against its initiators. In an interview with News Nation, he expressed hope that a compromise could still be reached.Meanwhile, Carney received a rare standing ovation in Davos after warning that the world is experiencing a true rupture rather than a gradual shift in global governance. The Canadian leader has sought to reduce his country’s reliance on the US after Trump suggested Canada should become the 51st American state. The White House said Trump’s Davos address would focus primarily on domestic economic issues, particularly rising living costs that threaten Republican prospects in the 2026 midterm elections. Nonetheless, Trump’s assertive foreign policy approach, now one year into his second term, has placed Greenland squarely at the center of global attention. Greenland’s prime minister warned this week that the island’s small population of 57,000 must be prepared for the possibility of military pressure. On Thursday, Trump is also expected to officially unveil the first charter of his proposed “Board of Peace,” an international conflict-resolution body that would require a $1 billion fee for permanent membership.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Tuesday, January 20, said that the old World Order is in the “midst of a rupture”, his candid admission echoes the voices of the Chinese and Russian leaders who have been urging for multipolarity since the turn of the decade. He emphasised that the international rule-based order was “partially false”. “We knew the story of the international rules-based world order was partially false, that the strongest would exempt themselves when convenient, that trade rules were enforced asymmetrically,” said Carney. The sentiment had been echoed by key Development theorists like Raul Prebisch and Andre Gunder Frank of the Dependency Paradigm. They said that underdevelopment is not because of a lack of integration into the world order, but because of colonial exploitation and unfair integration via neo-colonial terms of trade. "Let me be direct, we are in the midst of a rupture, not a transition," said Carney. "Over the past two decades, a series of crises in finance, health, energy, and geopolitics have laid bare risks of extreme global integration."
Trump and Carney playing "Good Cop and Bad Cop"?
However, a section of Chinese analysts believes that Donald Trump and Mark Carney are playing "Good Cop and Bad Cop" with China and its stake in multipolarity. Trump threatens to make Canada the 51st state, Carney pivots towards China and the Gulf to get $1T investment in return for the toxic assets in Canada, thus opening up the Chinese market at the same time pretend to stand up to US hegemony. All the assets in the US and Canada are unsustainably overvalued, and they require a constant flow of capital to sustain their value. So Mark Carney, since October, has visited the UAE, Qatar, and China, among many other foreign trips, securing investment for the inflated assets in Canada. This had been supported by the Trump administration despite his overt admission of the changing world order. Carney had a background at Goldman Sachs and led the UK in Brexit; he had been praised by Trump ever since his election.

Following this, in May, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth accepted an offer from the Gulf emirate of Qatar for a Boeing 747 to be used as Air Force One. This jet, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, has raised significant constitutional and ethical questions, as well as security concerns about using an aircraft donated by a foreign power for the highly sensitive role of the presidential plane.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Jan 20) marked the first anniversary of his return to the White House with a long, meandering news conference that leaned more toward complaint than celebration, and included repeated claims about his peacemaking efforts. Talking to the press, Trump touted a list of 365 achievements for 365 days in office and suggested that his push for Greenland acquisition could move beyond tariffs, adding coyly, "You’ll find out". What did Trump say exactly? Standing before reporters, the 79-year-old POTUS held up a folder he claimed contained a list of 365 achievements since he was sworn in on January 20 last year. While he did not walk the press through them, he offered a sweeping verdict on his own record. "God is very proud of the work I have done," Trump declared. "We need it for national security," he said, referring to the Arctic island that is part of NATO ally Denmark. "Things are going to work out pretty well," he added, defending his aggressive moves on the frozen land. When pressed on how far he would go to act on repeated threats to take over the territory, Trump dodged the question and instead just said, "You'll find out". He insisted that Greenlanders themselves would ultimately support US control once he spoke to them, despite thousands taking to the streets over the weekend to protest against the idea. The US president also delivered a thinly veiled warning that his options are not limited to economic measures. But, hinted that tariffs would remain his preferred tool to pressure allies, even as the Supreme Court considers the legality of some of his trade actions. Tariffs, he insisted, were still his preference. He also dismissed concerns within NATO, claiming the alliance would be pleased with whatever arrangement he reaches over Greenland, though he offered no details. NATO "is going to be very happy," Trump said.

Trump doubled down on his push to acquire Greenland, calling it vital for US national security. He hinted his options go beyond tariffs, warning “you’ll find out,” brushed off European concerns, and dismissed calls for a G7 meeting.

A former senior adviser to Donald Trump has dismissed suggestions that the United States could force Greenland to change hands, saying such a move would be politically impossible and strategically unnecessary. However, when asked by a reporter what he planned to say to European leaders who opposed his plans to buy Greenland, Trump said: "I don't think they're gonna push back too much. We have to have it. They have to have this done".

The Board of Peace has been presented as a mechanism to guide Gaza's post-war reconstruction and was endorsed by the UN Security Council last November. Yet its charter makes no explicit reference to Gaza. As more details emerge, attention has shifted to the board's reported $1 billion buy-in fee and what that money would actually fund.
Peacekeeping grift?
Over the weekend, Trump's administration sent a wave of invitations to world leaders including India, to join what was described as a "one of a kind" board. Other leaders that made the list of invitees were Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko, both long isolated from Western forums. While Moscow and Minsk appeared receptive, many European officials were stunned by the steep price tag of the "buy-in" and the lack of clarity around how funds would be managed. Also read | Norway PM confirms Trump sent ‘chilling’ text linking Nobel snub to Greenland
Davos braces for disruption
In Davos, thousands of delegates are gathering for the four-day forum, to discuss "improving the state of the world." In the middle of world's foremost economic meeting, Trump's apparent scheming to inject his trademark defunction and self-promotion has triggered panic.Bloomberg reports that European governments are now scrambling to revisit the board's terms. A central concern is where the permanent membership fee would go, and what safeguards would ensure the money is used for rebuilding Gaza, an unnamed US official told Associated Press.Trump's decision to chair the board has only deepened unease. European officials are reportedly worried that this leaves decision-making power in the hands of a leader who is not only openly threatening to seize Greenland, but has now confessed that he no longer feels obliged to think "purely of peace" after a Nobel Peace Prize snub.https://www.wionews.com/videos/israel-gaza-war-trump-s-gaza-board-of-peace-faces-hesitation-from-key-allies-1768879281368/embed

Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store has confirmed that he received a threatening text message from US President Donald Trump, in which the POTUS complained about not receiving the Nobel Peace Prize and suggested the snub had changed his "peaceful" outlook on global affairs and alliances. Store said the message was sent directly to him and followed earlier communication from Norway and Finland opposing Washington's tariff threats linked to Greenland.
Norway pushes back on Trump' Nobel claim
In a statement, Store said he made it clear to Trump that the Norwegian government has no role in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize."I have clearly explained, including to President Trump, what is well known, the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee and not the Norwegian Government," he said. Also read | Trump links Nobel snub to Greenland push, says no longer bound to think 'peace'Store added that Trump’s message came in response to a joint note sent earlier in the day by himself and Finnish President Alexander Stubb.
