A US&nbsp;appeals court on Wednesday directed a federal judge to drop a criminal case against President Donald Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn for lying to the FBI, handing a victory to the Justice Department and effectively ending the politically charged case.

In a split decision, a three-judge panel of the US&nbsp;Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled in favor of Flynn and the Trump administration in preventing US&nbsp;District Judge Emmet Sullivan from exercising his discretion on whether to grant the department's motion to clear Flynn, who twice pleaded guilty.

The ruling prevents Sullivan from hearing arguments at a July 16 hearing from retired judge John Gleeson, whom he appointed as a "friend of the court" to argue against dropping the case.

"In this case, the district court’s actions will result in specific harms to the exercise of the executive branch’s exclusive prosecutorial power," wrote Judge Neomi Rao, who was appointed by Trump.

"The contemplated proceedings would likely require the Executive to reveal the internal deliberative process behind its exercise of prosecutorial discretion," she added.

Judge Robert Wilkins, an Obama administration appointee, dissented.

Flynn, a retired Army lieutenant general, was one of several former Trump aides charged under former Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation that detailed Moscow's interference in the 2016 US&nbsp;presidential election.

Flynn twice pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI about his conversations with Russia's then-ambassador, Sergey Kislyak.

He switched lawyers to pursue a new scorched-earth tactic that accused the FBI of entrapping him, and asked the judge to dismiss the charge.

US President Donald Trump has defended his decision to suspend issuing of green cards till the end of the year, saying it was needed to give jobs to Americans.

Through an executive order, Donald Trump, in April, had suspended issuing of green cards for 90 days. On Monday, he issued a proclamation which extended the suspension till December 31, 2020.

"So, we want to give jobs to Americans right now. Right now, we want jobs going to Americans," Trump told reporters in San Luis, Arizona on Tuesday when asked by reporters to explain the suspension order.

Trump, seeking another term in the White House in the November 3 presidential election, on Monday said the step was essential to help millions of Americans who have lost their jobs due to the economic crisis amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.

Donald Trump said that the overall unemployment rate in the country nearly quadrupled between February and May of 2020 - producing some of the most extreme unemployment rates ever recorded by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

While the rate of 13.3 per cent unemployment in May reflects a marked decline from April, millions of Americans remain out of work.

With the current suspension in effect, the wait time for Indian technology professionals to get legal permanent residency in the US is now running into decades.

The US every year allocates only 1,40,000 green cards for all employment-preference immigrants, including accompanying family members.

Currently, there is a backlog of almost 10 lakh foreign nationals and accompanying family members lawfully residing in the United States. These applicants have been approved but are yet to receive employment green cards.

The social networking giant Twitter Inc permanently suspended the account of an online right-wing figure for violation of copyright policy.

The person in question had tweeted out a fake video last week which was then re-shared by US President Donald Trump.

The doctored video showed two toddlers -&nbsp;Black and White “running away” from each other, and referred to a baby as “racist”.

Twitter has been openly taking action against Trump’s tweet over the last month. In just the last 24 hours, this was the second action against US President. A tweet in which Trump threatened protesters in Washington DC with “serious force” was also taken down for violating its policy on threatening violence.

In May, when protests against racial discrimination soared across the US, Trump referred to demonstrators and “thugs”, which was also flagged by Twitter.

Following this, Trump announced plans to bring in an executive order to limit the powers of social media.

The doctored video in question was initially posted by Carpe Donktum, a Trump-supporter account. Responding to the clip, Twitter said that it had suspended the account permanently for “repeated violations” on posting copyrighted material.

"I received a DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) takedown order this morning for that video, and a few hours later a suspension letter", Donktum posted on Locals, a similar platform.

Usually, Twitter provides way for one to redeem their account after violations, which includes a temporary ban and/or limits on interaction. However, none of these were provided to Donktum, to which he responded with "So I assume they intend this to be final and permanent”.

Earlier in July, Donktum’s account was banned temporary for posting a doctored video of Trump as a cowboy attacking CNN journalist Jim Acosta.

The book is titled “The Room Where It Happened”, and has been at the centre of controversy in terms of its content. According to Bolton, Trump had sought political favours from Chinese President Xi Jinping and had allegedly not raised any red flags with China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims, who are reportedly kept in concentration camps.

Twitter has decided to give its US employees off on presidential election voting day in November. It has also decided to offer global workforce paid time off to vote in national elections in their respective countries.

This comes in the wake of the social media firm being at loggerheads with US President Donald Trump over his controversial tweets.

According to a CNBC report on Wednesday citing an internal Twitter memo, Election Day takes place on a Tuesday in November, making it difficult for people to vote.

"Given the importance of voting, going forward all national election voting days that take place on a weekday will be a paid day off. Since the US presidential election falls on a work day (November 3), we will plan to close all US offices on that day," the company told employees in an internal memo.

"For all other elections, if you do not have enough time outside of working hours to vote or your country doesn't already have a process in place to address this, you should take the time you need to do so and you will be compensated for the time off," the memo added.

Teams responsible for work related to elections, including the security of Twitter's services, will however continue to work.

Twitter on Tuesday flagged a tweet from US President Donald Trump which promoted violence by saying if protesters tried to set up an "autonomous zone" in Washington, DC they would be met with "serious force".

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, there was a sense history had ended, and that the United States represented a supreme endpoint.

Today, the US is not dominant, it is in crisis: convulsed by riots and protest, riven by a virus that has galloped away from those charged with overseeing it, and heading into a presidential election led by a man that has possibly divided the nation like no other before him.

Using the most common metrics available to political scientists, there are signs the United States is failing.

Until very recently, this idea was extraordinary, unthinkable to all but the most radical critics. But, the US is increasingly performing poorly on key predictors of state failure: ethnic and class conflict, democratic and institutional backsliding, and other socioeconomic indicators including healthcare and inequality.

Ethnic and class conflict

Comparative politics pays great attention to the role of ethnic conflict as a predictor of state failure. Those who study African countries, where most of the flare-ups are currently taking place, often observe that ethnic conflicts are closely correlated with battles to secure key resources, such as water and arable land. This closely relates the study of so-called “grievance studies”, which typically regards deep-seated inequalities as causing resource conflicts.

However, it would be a mistake to think this is because of different ethnic groups per se. It is more to do with how inequality and poverty exacerbate perceived racial and cultural fissures. The US reflects this problem, where the experience of many black Americans is telling: they feel “criminalised at birth”, and when this perception reaches a critical mass among a large enough population, states fail.

The global conflict zones that political scientists largely focus on are where groups are fighting for basic resources. These include water, mineral, and other basic economic rights.

So, areas that are deeply impoverished, such as Flint, Michigan, or almost any other recent area of profound socio-economic distress, are highly analogous to failed countries. They have also been some of the biggest challenges to the “united” part of the United States.

Signs of increased economic inequality 
 
Yet, the economic indicators are not only dire for minority groups. America’s economy has grown at a good clip for decades, but the wealth has been taken up almost entirely by the wealthiest. For example, CEOs’ pay went from 20 times the average workers’ salary in 1965 to 278 times their salary in 2018.

In real terms, only college graduates have seen their pay increase as a group since 1979, and this occurs while 21 per cent&nbsp;of American children live in poverty. Moreover, health outcomes for Americans are very poor compared to other OECD countries, despite having the highest per capita healthcare costs in the world.

Disproportionately, this is a problem affecting black Americans. This might go some way to explaining recent riots, but is far from a complete picture. All poor Americans are getting relatively poorer, which may also explain why poor white Americans seem increasingly likely to fight against the perceived injustices of other ethnic groups. They do this by pitting themselves against similarly politically and economically disenfranchised groups, rather than the power system that keeps them dispossessed.

Adding to this, a major historical study by Thomas Piketty showed the disconnect between the poorest and wealthiest Americans is getting exponentially worse, the middle class is shrinking, and the wealth of the top 1% is taking up an increasing share of the pie.

Is there a democratic deficit? 
 
This wealth disconnect is increasingly represented as a deficit in democracy. As one study showed, America’s democracy is being seriously undermined.

In fact, “undermined” is putting it mildly: after a rigorous analysis of voting from 1982 to 2002, Gilens and Page showed the preferences of the top 10% routinely trumped those of average voters.

It would be a mistake to underestimate the importance of these findings. As analyses of the 2016 general election showed, the US states that flipped from Democrat to Republican (supposedly part of Hillary Clinton’s “firewall”) were almost exclusively part of the so called “rust belt”. Once part of America’s all-powerful manufacturing base, they are now people who feel forgotten, and increasingly angry.

The black and white, racial narrative of America’s woes misses an important, but even more consequential point: while there is no doubt black Americans are disproportionately suffering, an increasing majority is losing out, regardless of race.

American hope 
 
The American revolution centred on the very sensible idea there should be no taxation without representation. Yet, there is now significant evidence that a majority of citizens are not being represented.

The US has one advantage: for all of its flaws, it remains an at least semi-functional democracy. This may well mean blame for state failure can exist with individuals or parties, rather than the entire system.

However, the democratic institutions of the United States continue to break down, and successive governments have proved unable to respond and listen to their citizens. Bizarrely, by the most important indicators available to political scientists, the United States is failing.

Even among its most ardent critics, few would consider America’s failure to be anything other than a catastrophe. The domestic deterioration of the world’s biggest nuclear and military superpower would prove unprecedented and frightening beyond rational analysis — rhetoric suggesting this is merely the new “fall of Rome” is almost glib.

The challenge now is whether the world’s oldest continuous democracy can live up to its own ideals.

The black and white, racial narrative of America’s woes misses an important, but even more consequential point: while there is no doubt black Americans are disproportionately suffering, an increasing majority is losing out, regardless of race. American hope The American revolution centred on the very sensible idea there should be no taxation without representation. Yet, there is now significant evidence that a majority of citizens are not being represented. The US has one advantage: for all of its flaws, it remains an at least semi-functional democracy. This may well mean blame for state failure can exist with individuals or parties, rather than the entire system. However, the democratic institutions of the United States continue to break down, and successive governments have proved unable to respond and listen to their citizens. Bizarrely, by the most important indicators available to political scientists, the United States is failing. Even among its most ardent critics, few would consider America’s failure to be anything other than a catastrophe. The domestic deterioration of the world’s biggest nuclear and military superpower would prove unprecedented and frightening beyond rational analysis — rhetoric suggesting this is merely the new “fall of Rome” is almost glib. The challenge now is whether the world’s oldest continuous democracy can live up to its own ideals. US will increase COVID-19 testing despite Trump's claims of slowing down: Fauci

United States President Donald Trump, who is currently campaigning for his reelection to White House in the upcoming 2020 Presidential polls has hit out at former US President Barack Obama.

Obama is the first Black American president ever. Ironically, the US Justice Department is currently reviewing Trump’s election as president in 2016, suspecting foreign interference in the elections. Earlier, Trump had claimed that Obama was spying on his campaign, but had not accused him of treason until now.

Trump recently told a local TV network, “It's treason. Look, when I came out a long time ago, I said they've been spying on our campaign ... Let's see what happens to them now."

"(William) Barr is doing a great job as attorney general, let's see what they come up with," he added.

However, Barr has claimed that he does not expect any charges against either Obama or Biden.

Recently, US intelligence agencies claimed that Russia played some role in Trump’s race to the White House in 2016. Robert Mueller, former Special Counsel discovered that Russia had peddled propaganda to harm the reputation of his rival Hillary Clinton. According to Bolton, Trump had sought political favours from Chinese President Xi Jinping and had allegedly not raised any red flags with China’s treatment of Uighur Muslims, who are reportedly kept in concentration camps.

Bolton also revealed that Trump “always wanted to be the one who broke up with the girl first”.

“Well, he said that he always, back in the day, as they say, he always wanted to be the one who broke up with the girl first,” Bolton said. “He didn’t want the girl to break up with him. And he used that to describe whether he would cancel the summit with Kim Jong-un first or whether we would risk the North Koreans cancelling it”.

“And I thought it was an insight into the president, candidly given, that showed how he approached this. As opposed to looking at it from the perspective of what our ultimate strategic interest was, in my view, would have been better not to agree to the summit to begin with.”

Trump has recently not made any comments on North Korea, especially after North’s violent transgressions whereby it blew up a shared liaison office across the border, which was seen as a symbol of North-South unity.

What the TikTok users asked their followers to do was to register for two free tickets for the rally using their mobile numbers, which was the maximum free tickets allowed from one phone, and then message 'STOP' to avoid getting any alerts or spam from the campaign. This, according to the TikTok users, would "leave him there standing alone on the stage".

The campaign officials, however, have dismissed all such reports, claiming it to be rumours and "fake news".

Trump's campaign manager told the local media houses that the office had already identified and removed these phone numbers, treating them as spam. He believes the underwhelming response was due to the "fake news" spread by left-wing supporters and media houses which made people scared of catching coronavirus.

An "overflow" stage was built outside the BOK Center, where Donald Trump and Mike Pence was set to give brief remarks, but due to low turnout, the speeches were cancelled.&nbsp;

Despite being quite on Twitter, Donald Trump was reported to be "angry" after the rally. According to NBC, Trump was "particularly angry that before he even left DC, aides made public that six members of the team in Tulsa tested positive for Covid-19".

According to a CNN report, Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner were angry at Parscale, as he promised a humongous crowd.&nbsp;

Earlier this week, Trump had said more than a million people wanted to attend his rally.&nbsp;

In a statement, Parscale blamed the low attendance during Tulsa rally on "a week’s worth of the fake news media warning people away from the rally because of COVID and protesters", which he said, "coupled with recent images of American cities on fire, had a real impact on people bringing their families and children to the rally".

Parscale went to criticize the journalists for being critical of Trump's campaign.&nbsp;

"For the media to now celebrate the fear that they helped create is disgusting, but typical," he said. "And it makes us wonder why we bother credentialing media for events when they don’t do their full jobs as professionals."

In 2016, Parscale played a huge role in Trump being elected as the President and the pressure is on re-election after Trump wants a reorganisation after bad polling results.

Earlier this week, Trump had said more than a million people wanted to attend his rally. In a statement, Parscale blamed the low attendance during Tulsa rally on "a week’s worth of the fake news media warning people away from the rally because of COVID and protesters", which he said, "coupled with recent images of American cities on fire, had a real impact on people bringing their families and children to the rally". Parscale went to criticize the journalists for being critical of Trump's campaign. "For the media to now celebrate the fear that they helped create is disgusting, but typical," he said. "And it makes us wonder why we bother credentialing media for events when they don’t do their full jobs as professionals."
