United States President Donald Trump said that no option was off the table for his plans to take over Greenland in an interview on Saturday (Mar 29). The president also defended his national security team amid the Signal chat leak.
&ldquo;We&rsquo;ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,&rdquo; Trump said during a telephonic interview with NBC News.
He added that there is a &ldquo;good possibility that we could do it without military force&rdquo; but that &ldquo;I don&rsquo;t take anything off the table.&rdquo;

Trump reiterates plans to get Greenland, says ‘should not talk about’ Signal chat leak during interview

Vice President JD Vance, White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, and senior personnel official Sergio Gor reportedly urged President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow noopener" target="_blank">Donald Trump</a> to dismiss National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.
The pressure followed a controversy sparked by Waltz&rsquo;s inclusion of a journalist in a private Signal chat discussing military plans, an act that drew sharp criticism from both sides of the political aisle, according to Politico.

Two individuals familiar with the matter told the outlet that Trump accepted Waltz had made a serious error, describing the situation as &ldquo;embarrassing.&rdquo; However, he was reluctant to sack him, reportedly saying he didn&rsquo;t want to hand a victory to his critics. &ldquo;They don&rsquo;t want to give the press a scalp,&rdquo; one White House insider said.
Still, the sources said that Waltz&rsquo;s future in the role might be limited. One suggested, &ldquo;They&rsquo;ll stick by him for now, but he&rsquo;ll be gone in a couple weeks.&rdquo;
A spokesperson for Waltz pushed back strongly on the Politico report, saying, &ldquo;The chattering of unnamed sources should be treated with the scepticism of gossip from people lacking the integrity to attach their names.&rdquo;
Brian Hughes, spokesperson for the White House National Security Council, also stood by Waltz, &ldquo;Mike Waltz serves at the pleasure of President Trump, and the president has voiced his support for Mike. The entire National Security leadership team has led a successful and effective counter-terrorism mission, and that is what media and Democrats are trying to obscure.&rdquo;

The controversy stems from a recent article by The Atlantic&rsquo;s editor-in-chief, Jeffrey Goldberg, who revealed that Waltz had added him to a group chat where military discussions about potential strikes on Houthi rebels in Yemen were taking place.
In the fallout, the administration gave mixed messages. Waltz insisted that a staff member hadn&rsquo;t added Goldberg to the chat, while Trump suggested otherwise, saying it was likely a staffer&rsquo;s fault.
Waltz also denied having a personal connection to Goldberg, though reports say the two had met years ago.

'He’ll be gone in couple weeks': JD Vance urges Trump to sack Waltz after Signal leak; Trump says 'not yet'

US President Donald Trump on Friday renewed his push for the United States to take control of Greenland, describing the move as essential for global peace and security.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said, &ldquo;We are not talking about peace for the United States. We are talking about world peace. We are talking about international security.&rdquo;
His comments came as Vice President JD Vance and other American officials visited a military base in Greenland, a large, resource-rich territory currently under Danish control.

&ldquo;Do you think we can do without it? We can&rsquo;t,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;We need Greenland. Very importantly, for international security, we have to have Greenland.&rdquo;
He pointed to growing activity by China and Russia in the region. &ldquo;If you look at Greenland right now, if you look at the waterways, you have Chinese and Russian ships all over the place, and we&rsquo;re not going to be able to do that,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;We&rsquo;re not relying on Denmark or anybody else to take care of that situation.&rdquo;

Trump also argued that Greenland has become more strategically important due to advances in military technology and the opening of new maritime routes. &ldquo;Modern day weaponry makes Greenland&rdquo; more critical than ever, he said, adding that &ldquo;Greenland&rsquo;s very important for the peace of the world, not us, the peace of the entire world.&rdquo;

Trump says the US must take over Greenland for ‘world peace’, warns China and Russia are ‘all over it’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to hold a conversation with Donald Trump on Friday (28 March), following an outreach from the US president.
Carney, who has not yet spoken to Trump since taking office nearly two weeks ago, confirmed on Thursday that the US President had contacted him the previous evening to arrange a call.
&ldquo;We will be speaking soon, certainly in the course of the next day or two,&rdquo; Carney said. He also stressed the importance of respecting Canada&rsquo;s independence, saying, &ldquo;That&rsquo;s not much to ask, but apparently it&rsquo;s a lot for him.&rdquo;

The two leaders are set to speak amid growing tensions after Trump launched a trade war against Canada and called for it to become the 51st state of the United States.
&ldquo;It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. It is possible that, with comprehensive negotiations, we will be able to restore some trust, but there will be no turning back,&rdquo; Carney stated.
He also said Canada must begin to reduce its dependence on the US and look to build trade ties with other nations. &ldquo;We will need to dramatically reduce our reliance on the United States. We will need to pivot our trade relationships elsewhere,&rdquo; he added.
Tensions rose further after Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday, introducing a 25 per cent tariff on finished vehicles imported into the US, set to take effect next week.

Carney responded strongly, warning that Canada would hit back if the tariffs were implemented. He stepped away from his election campaign to lead a special Cabinet committee on US relations in Ottawa.
&ldquo;We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada,&rdquo; he said.

Carney also said that Canada must rethink its economic strategy in light of shifting global dynamics. Over 75 per cent of Canadian exports currently go to the US.
&ldquo;The old relationship we had with the United States based on deepening integration of our economies and tight security and military cooperation is over,&rdquo; he said.

Anonymous, a "hacktivist" group, has issued a dire warning about Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin and Elon Musk, who it says are colluding to destroy Western democracies. 'This isn't paranoia': Anonymous claims Trump and Putin are in a 'love fest'

Governments in the United States will enforce higher automobile costs and a lower selection of available automobile models because of President Trump's recent tariffs on imported vehicles. Experts within the automotive industry confirm automakers use several methods to lessen effects but all these actions result in price increases for consumers.
The automotive global industry shows immediate effects from Trump's 25% car-import tariffs and auto-parts levy which triggered market stock plunges and major exporting nations fear job loss scenarios. The administration states that the tariffs will boost domestic production yet experts believe they will hurt consumer purchasing power right away.
Aston Martin's former CEO Andy Palmer stressed through his statement that the 25% business expense must ultimately result in higher automobile consumer costs. The industry responds by passing cost increases to various product lines and cutting features as well as eliminating some imported lower-profit models.

Changes imposed by these tariffs would substantially affect how much customers need to spend on buying vehicles in the United States. S&amp;P Global Mobility predicts vehicle sales in the United States will decrease to 14.5-15 million units annually because of the existing tariffs starting in 2024 compared to the projected 16 million units that year. Cox Automotive projects that U.S.-manufactured vehicles will increase in price by USD 3,000 while vehicles such as Canadian and Mexican imports will rise by USD 6,000 without any exemption plans.
Mainstream automakers who work with low margins face difficulties retaining their current pricing levels because luxury brands will likely absorb these added costs. The Honda CR-V and Chevy Trax as well as the Subaru Forester and Chevy Equinox and Honda HR-V models face considerable risk due to their affordability.
The automotive industry understands that its product range includes specific vehicles which tolerate margin compression according to Erin Keating from Cox Automotive. The market contains multiple vehicles that face high production expenses yet almost all of these products are produced outside of America.

Trump's tariffs threaten higher prices and reduced choices for US car buyers

US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem visited a prison camp in El Salvador on Wednesday (March 26) but what grabbed people's attention was her premium gold Rolex. As per the buzz online, the watch costs around $60,000. Noem was seen flaunting the watch - apparently a Rolex Daytona - in front of a cell full of Venezuelan prisoners after Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigrants.&nbsp;
Although, no clarification came from Noem's office, netizens wondered how Noem - who was merely a governor in South Dakota until this year - can afford such an expensive watch on government salary.&nbsp;

'Might die in office': New book reveals Democrats planned Biden's presidential bid withdrawal as early as 2023

Donald Trump's administration has been asked to preserve the messages from the 'Signalgate' chat. On Thursday (Mar 27) a US judge ordered the administration to secure the chats in which top national security officials discussed plans for an attack on Yemen's Huthi rebels.
<h2>Pressure builds</h2>
District Judge James Boasberg, as per AFP, ordered the Trump government to "preserve all Signal communication between March 11 and March 15."
This would cover the period between the creation of the chat by National Security Advisor Mike Waltz &mdash; mistakenly adding Jeffrey Goldberg &mdash; and the day US airstrikes on Iran-backed Houthis were carried out.

The judge also ordered the government to file by Monday (Mar 31) details on the steps taken the government to preserve the messages.&nbsp;
This ruling adds pressure on the White House, still reeling from the controversy that erupted after The Atlantic magazine revealed that its editor was "accidentally" added to the chat on the encrypted chat application Signal.
<h2>Witch-hunt?</h2>
Trump has sought to dismiss the scandal as a "witch-hunt" while attacking Goldberg and The Atlantic for breaking the story earlier this week.

While denying that any classified information was shared in the group, Trump largely pinned the blame on Waltz, saying he has admitted he was "responsible" for the blunder.
Dismissing calls by democrats for the top officials involved in the chat to resign, Trump also sought to shift the spotlight to what he called the success of the raids on Yemeni rebel Houthis.
However, pressure continues to mount over the "Signalgate".

On Thursday, The top Republican and Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee issued a bipartisan call for a Pentagon probe into the Atlantic's claims that the chat, among other things, "may have violated federal records law".
"If true, this reporting raises questions as to the use of unclassified networks to discuss sensitive and classified information," said a letter from Republican committee chair Roger Wicker and ranking Democrat Jack Reed.

Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian student enrolled at Columbia University, who self-deported to Canada after her student visa was revoked for allegedly supporting Hamas, broke the silence about her ordeal on Thursday (March 27).&nbsp;
The 37-year-old Indian PhD student never imagined that her academic journey at the Ivy League university would come to such a drastic end.&nbsp;
She stressed that her university, Columbia University has "let her down", hoping that her enrolment at the university will be restored.&nbsp;

Srinivasan was accused of being a supporter and sympathiser of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. She was about to complete her PhD when US President Donald Trump's administration revoked her student visa for her alleged involvement in propagating and aligning with Hamas.
Her student visa was renewed in December - just a month before Trump's inauguration at the White House.
"I spent five years at Columbia University, working, I don't know, maybe 100 hours a week sometimes. I never expected the institution to let me down. But it did," she told Al Jazeera in an interview.
"I hope Columbia comes to its senses and re-enrolls me," she said, hoping for fairness and justice from an institution of global repute.

"All the requirements for my PhD are complete, and whatever is left, I don't even need to be in the US for it," she said, adding "So, I'm trying to appeal to Columbia" for them to do their bit.
<h2>How was she self deported?</h2>
Srinivasan received an email on March 6 when she woke up in her Columbia-owned apartment from the US consulate in Chennai, informing her that her visa had been cancelled.&nbsp;
She immediately checked the official immigration portal and found confirmation that her visa, which was renewed months earlier until 2029, was no longer valid.
As she panicked, Srinivasan contacted Columbia's International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).&nbsp;

Later, the office assured her that her student status (I-20) was still intact and scheduled a Zoom meeting for the next day.
The Next day, ten minutes into that Zoom call, there was a knock on her door.&nbsp;
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement were on the door, who without properly identifying themselves, demanded entry, and said they intended to place her in removal proceedings. Her roommate refused to open the door.
&ldquo;I freaked out. Why is ICE at my door?&rdquo; Srinivasan recalled. &ldquo;You live in Columbia housing, a place you&rsquo;d consider safe. The fact that they entered without a warrant was terrifying.&rdquo;
The ISSO adviser on the call, visibly shocked, muted herself to make frantic calls before providing Srinivasan with a list of lawyers. She said Columbia&rsquo;s Public Safety advised her not to open the door but offered little else.
The next day, the agents returned to her door, warning that they would keep coming "every day" until she was placed in removal proceedings.&nbsp;
It was the same day when Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian Green Card holder and protest leader, was arrested from Columbia housing.

And, by March 9, Columbia revoked her student's status and ordered her to vacate university housing.&nbsp;
However, she did not wait for deportation and with no legal recourse, she packed a single bag, leaving behind her furniture, belongings, and even her cat, Cricket&mdash;and fled to Canada on March 11 using a visitor visa she had previously secured for academic workshops and conferences.
Three days later, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a photo of Srinivasan on X, calling her a "terrorist sympathiser" and claiming that she had "self-deported" using a border control app.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If supporting the idea of human rights or ending a genocide is equated with supporting Hamas, then anyone in proximity to me &ndash; without me having done anything &ndash; can just be picked up and made an example of,&rdquo; Srinivasan said.

The most popular politician in the United States is not President Donald Trump, according to data analysed by an American journalist. The most favoured US politician is Senator Bernie Sanders.
G. Elliott Morris, who shared the analysis on his website, determined the favourability by collecting questions from YouGov/Economist polls in the last three months, which asked voters how they viewed prominent political figures or possible candidates for the 2028 presidential elections.

Morris, a data-driven journalist known for his work on election polling and predictions, explained, &ldquo;Then I picked out notable figures, and graphed their net favorability rating (the share of adults saying they viewed the person/party favorably minus share saying they viewed the person/party unfavorably) in the most recent result.&rdquo;

<h2>The most popular politician in US</h2>
The analysis pointed out that Senator Bernie Sanders is the most popular politician in the US and not Trump. Sanders has a favourability of 46 per cent in adults, while 39 per cent view him unfavourably. He is also popular among young people (by nearly 20 points), lower-income voters, moderates, independents, Hispanics, Black voters, and men. With white voters, he is only two points underwater.

According to Morris, &ldquo;One theory for Sanders&rsquo; relative crossover appeal is his emphasis on criticism of the system &mdash; something young men in particular shared with him in 2016, and which left them open to the appeal of Trumpism in 2024 (especially post-inflation in 2022-2023). Sanders&rsquo;s campaigning against the neoliberal consensus is persuasive with the many voters (and again, especially young people) that believe has left them behind.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Trump was the voice for this cohort in 2024, as Sanders was in the 2016 primary (and to a certain extent in the 2016 general). Maybe Democrats can learn something from that,&rdquo; he added.

The analysis also revealed that Elon Musk is the most unpopular GOP-aligned major official. It further said that Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pete Buttigieg are more popular than Trump and his vice president, JD Vance.

Also read | Trump's top advisers' private data found online amid Yemen war plans group chat scandal Morris, a data-driven journalist known for his work on election polling and predictions, explained, “Then I picked out notable figures, and graphed their net favorability rating (the share of adults saying they viewed the person/party favorably minus share saying they viewed the person/party unfavorably) in the most recent result.” Also read | Canada PM Mark Carney calls Trump's new 25% tariffs on car imports to US 'direct attack' The most popular politician in US The analysis pointed out that Senator Bernie Sanders is the most popular politician in the US and not Trump. Sanders has a favourability of 46 per cent in adults, while 39 per cent view him unfavourably. He is also popular among young people (by nearly 20 points), lower-income voters, moderates, independents, Hispanics, Black voters, and men. With white voters, he is only two points underwater. Also read | Trump, Macron and Zelensky lead wave of new 'mobile phone diplomacy' According to Morris, “One theory for Sanders’ relative crossover appeal is his emphasis on criticism of the system — something young men in particular shared with him in 2016, and which left them open to the appeal of Trumpism in 2024 (especially post-inflation in 2022-2023). Sanders’s campaigning against the neoliberal consensus is persuasive with the many voters (and again, especially young people) that believe has left them behind.” “Trump was the voice for this cohort in 2024, as Sanders was in the 2016 primary (and to a certain extent in the 2016 general). Maybe Democrats can learn something from that,” he added. Also read | Trump continues to have 'confidence in his national security team': White House The analysis also revealed that Elon Musk is the most unpopular GOP-aligned major official. It further said that Democrats Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Pete Buttigieg are more popular than Trump and his vice president, JD Vance. (With inputs from agencies)

Watch: Russian state TV mocks Trump officials for leaked Yemen air strike plans, says they want to 'get in' THIS chat

The private data of top security advisers to US President Donald Trump has been found online, according to a report published on Wednesday (Mar 26). This new revelation adds further fallout to the previous revelations of serious security lapses within the Trump administration. &nbsp;
It comes as a discussion on Yemen war plans was leaked after a journalist was "accidentally" added to a chat group which included the US vice president, defence secretary, secretary of state and some other members.

<h2>Trump admin's sensitive info out on the internet</h2>
As per a report by German news magazine Der Spiegel, mobile phone numbers, email addresses, and in some cases passwords linked to National Security Advisor Mike Waltz, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have been discovered through commercial data-search services and hacked databases.
While it is unclear how recent all the leaked details are, some of the information is believed to be current.

The disclosure comes as the Trump administration faces bipartisan calls for resignations following Monday's revelations that top officials had used an unsecured Signal group chat to discuss classified military plans for airstrikes on Yemen's Houthi rebels. The chat included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and others, raising concerns over the security of US military operations. &nbsp;
<h2>Security breach sparks alarm &nbsp;</h2>
The report states that Hegseth's personal information was "particularly easy" to locate, with his email address appearing in over 20 data breaches. In some cases, the email address and even associated passwords were accessible. His phone number, which had recently been linked to WhatsApp, appears to have only been deleted in the wake of the revelations. &nbsp;

Both Gabbard and Waltz's numbers were also linked to WhatsApp and Signal accounts, potentially leaving them vulnerable to spyware. Der Spiegel warned that foreign intelligence agencies may have monitored their communications, including the now-infamous Signal group chat that inadvertently included The Atlantic journalist Jeffrey Goldberg.&nbsp;
Details of the chat, which contained sensitive military discussions, were published by The Atlantic on Wednesday.&nbsp;
The National Security Council claimed that the compromised Waltz accounts and passwords had been changed in 2019. However, the new revelation has led to the argument that this exposes major weaknesses in how the Trump administration handles sensitive information. &nbsp;

Trump's top advisers' private data found online amid Yemen war plans group chat scandal

US President Donald Trump terminated foreign aid for various organisations after taking over the White House in January. Several US foreign aid contracts and grants were frozen and this has affected one particular creature in particular - a rare turtle. The creature is native to the Gulf of Mexico. However, it was rescued from a beach in Wales some time back.
It was supposed to return to its habitat off the coast of the United States but has been stranded in the United Kingdom because of a lack of funding owing to Trump's foreign aid cuts.
The turtle named Rhossi is a critically endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle. Rescuers found it on the coast of Anglesey, northern Wales, in 2023. They took the turtle to the Anglesey Sea Zoo, where it was treated and nursed back to health.

Zoo officials and other experts who are around Rhossi say that it is now healthy enough to be sent back home. However, the problem now is funding.
<h2>Freeze on foreign aid affecting marine turtle conservation efforts&nbsp;</h2>
The Trump administration has put a halt on all foreign development assistance for three months. Following the order, the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) froze funding for the Marine Turtle Conservation Fund. The turtle is bearing the brunt of it as the lack of foreign aid has put a stop to the work done by organisations like Anglesey Sea Zoo.

Frankie Hobro, the owner and director of Anglesey Sea Zoo, told the BBC, "Animal species don't understand politics, they don't understand boundaries and borders."
Hobro laments the fact that the decision has affected "a really successful repatriation regime" that had been put in place.&nbsp;
"We were going to fine-tune the process for future turtles. It's very, very frustrating that's been put on hold now really because of politics and this kind of sweeping decision and the far-reaching affect it is having way beyond the states," he added.
<h2>Rhossi not the only turtle in UK from Gulf of Mexico</h2>
The Marine Turtle Conservation Fund was working with the zoo to send Rhossi back to its native waters in the Gulf of Mexico. Rhossi is the second Kemp's ridley sea turtle that would be sent back to the region by the Anglesey Sea Zoo. In 2023, a turtle named Tally was released in the waters.
Meanwhile, Hobro is now exploring the possibility of going through Mexico to return the turtle, but says it would be a "shame because we've got these great relationships with these wonderful whole conservation programmes for the species in Texas and the people we've been working with."

President Donald Trump on Tuesday (Mar 26) ordered the immediate declassification of material related to the FBI's Crossfire Hurricane Investigation on alleged Russian meddling into US elections, which he had repeatedly called the 'Russia hoax'. While much of this is already in the public domain thanks to several media leaks and a partial declassification in 2023, there may still be material that could potentially reveal some national security secrets.
In a memo addressed to the attorney general, director of national intelligence and director of Central Intelligence Agency, Trump wrote: "I have determined that all of the materials referenced in the Presidential Memorandum of January 19, 2021 (Declassification of Certain Materials Related to the FBI&rsquo;s Crossfire Hurricane Investigation), are no longer classified. I have further determined that the material proposed for redaction by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in a cover letter dated January 17, 2021, remains classified."
Ordering the declassification of the material, he made an excemption saying "the materials described above does not extend to materials that must be protected from disclosure pursuant to orders of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and does not require the disclosure of certain personally identifiable information or any other materials that must be protected from disclosure under applicable law."

&nbsp;
This counterintelligence investigation pertained to allegations that Russian President Vladimir Putin and/ or his intelligence agencies tried to help Trump win his first term in 2016.
It looked into whether people linked to Trump presidential campaign were 'coordinating, wittingly or unwittingly, with the Russian government's efforts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election.
During his first term, Trump fired the-then FBI director James Comey, partly over what he called the 'Russia hoax'. This spiralled into an obstruction of justice case, which was investigated by the former FBI director Robert Mueller. That probe did not bring out anything to directly implicate Trump.

Mueller concluded that the Russian meddling was "sweeping and systematic" but there was no proof that Trump campaign had "conspired or coordinated" with the Russian government.
The investigation was partially triggered by information from former Trump campaign member George Papadopoulos that the Russians had damaging material on Hillary Clinton, the Democratic rival of Trump for the 2016 presidential race. It was reported that the Russians were willing to release that information anonymously to help the Trump campaign.
<h2>What is the 'Trump pee' tape document, also known as Steele Dossier?</h2>
Christopher Steele is a former British spy who prepared documents that came to be called the 'Steele Dossier'. It contained allegations about how Russian intelligence and Trump campaign cooperated to defeat Hillary Clinton.
Among these documents is an explosive claim that Trump once stayed at the Ritz-Carlton hotel in Moscow where he allegedly paid Russian sex workers to perform a show for him that involved urinating on a bed. As per the claims and reports at the time, this was the same bed in which former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama had slept in, in the past.
The Steele dossier claimed that the hotel was under the control of Russian intelligence agency FSB, which had wire- tapped it with microphones and installed hidden cameras.

In broad strokes, the suggestion was that the Russians had an understanding of, and took advantage of, Trump's sexual tastes to obtain incriminating material on him.&nbsp;
The whole thing exploded into conspiracy theories, with many asking whether a 'Trump pee tape' existed somewhere.
In subsequent reported remarks, Steele has been ambivalent about it. At times, he said the pee tape probably exists but the Russians didn't need to release it.
He reportedly told his colleagues that 'It's 50&ndash;50' and that the information about it was 'anecdotal'.
Steele had shared some information with the Crossfire Hurricane investigators. The Investigation General report into the probe said that the Steele Dossier "became an important part of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation" but is silent on the pee tape claims.

<h2>Will Crossfire Hurricane documents contain material incriminating FBI?</h2>
In 2023, the FBI released some documents with redactions from the Crossfire Hurricane Investigation after a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit.
Still, some of the files that were not disclosed, or reportedly went missing, could contain intelligence from the US and NATO allies on Russians and Russian agents that were feeding information to the US, American media reports said.
If fully released, that might reveal information about FBI&rsquo;s problematic foreign intelligence surveillance warrants and interview notes with Christopher Steele.

Currently, visa applicants living abroad are already required to share their social media handles with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS).

If you are a green card holder in the US, you may soon need to surrender your social media accounts to the government under US President Donald Trump's new proposal as part of his crackdown on immigration. Currently, visa applicants living abroad are already required to share their social media handles with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). However now, Trump's new proposal will extend the same requirement to individuals already living in the country who are applying for permanent residency or seeking asylum. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed that Russian disinformation is affecting American leaders in an interview with Time magazine published on Monday (March 24).
Zelensky said that some members of the US administration appear to be placing more trust in Russian President Vladimir Putin than in their intelligence services.

"I believe Russia has managed to influence some people on the White House team through information," Ukraine's Zelensky said. "Their signal to the Americans was that the Ukrainians do not want to end the war, and something should be done to force them," he added.
Military aid and intelligence support from the US to Ukraine were briefly suspended following a tense meeting between Zelensky, US President Donald Trump, and Vice President JD Vance at the White House which ended in a heated exchange. Although assistance later resumed after further talks between US and Ukrainian officials, the interruption raised concerns in Kyiv about the reliability of American backing.

In a separate interview on 21 March with far-right US commentator Tucker Carlson, US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff appeared to repeat Russian talking points, which further deepened doubts about the direction of US policy.
"(Russia) reclaimed these five regions. They have Crimea, and they've gotten what they want. So why do they need more?" Witkoff said.
Zelensky also addressed another instance he said reflected the Russian propaganda which was Trump&rsquo;s comments about the alleged encirclement of Ukrainian troops in Russia&rsquo;s Kursk Oblast.
"That was a lie," Zelensky stated.

Trump made those claims just before a scheduled phone call with Putin on 18 March. The purpose of the call was to discuss a possible peace agreement, including a US-proposed 30-day ceasefire, which Ukraine had already agreed to.
Putin initially indicated a willingness to consider the ceasefire but then added conditions, including the end of all foreign military and intelligence support for Ukraine.
During his conversation with Trump, Putin once again refused to agree to a full ceasefire, offering instead a temporary 30-day halt in attacks on energy infrastructure. However, that limited ceasefire was reportedly broken by Russian forces shortly afterwards.

US President Donald Trump has criticised the official portrait of him hanging in Colorado&rsquo;s state capitol, calling it &ldquo;purposefully distorted&rdquo; and demanding that it be taken down.
&ldquo;Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado, in the State Capitol, put up by the Governor, along with all other Presidents, was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before,&rdquo; Trump wrote on Truth Social on Sunday.

<h2>Portrait painted by British-born artist</h2>
The artist, Sarah A. Boardman, was born in the UK and previously painted Barack Obama&rsquo;s portrait. She was chosen to paint Trump&rsquo;s after the original presidential portrait artist, Lawrence Williams, passed away in 2003. Williams had completed all 43 earlier presidential portraits.

Trump&rsquo;s portrait, unveiled in 2019, was not commissioned by Colorado Governor Jared Polis. Instead, it was funded through a GoFundMe campaign launched by Republican Kevin Grantham, who was president of the state senate at the time. The campaign raised the $10,000 needed to complete the work.

Trump, however, said he would rather not have a portrait at all than keep the one currently displayed. According to him, many Colorado residents have contacted the state asking for the image to be removed or changed.
&ldquo;I am speaking on their behalf to the Radical Left Governor, Jared Polis, who is extremely weak on Crime, in particular with respect to Tren de Aragua, which practically took over Aurora (Don&rsquo;t worry, we saved it!), to take it down,&rdquo; Trump said. &ldquo;Jared should be ashamed of himself.&rdquo;

The gang was said to have taken control of an apartment complex in the area. Footage shared online appeared to show armed men in the building shortly before a shooting took place. The incident prompted Trump to visit Aurora during his campaign.
<h2>Past controversy over the portrait&rsquo;s spot</h2>
Trump&rsquo;s portrait had already drawn attention before it was even hung. In 2018, a temporary portrait of Russian President Vladimir Putin was placed on an easel in front of the space where Trump&rsquo;s painting was due to go.
The prank was pulled off by an activist from ProgressNow Colorado, with the help of Democratic legislative staffer Katie March, who later faced disciplinary action for allowing the activist into the building.

In the backdrop of diplomatic tensions between the US and South Africa, Elon Musk has once again accused the South African government of racial discrimination. Watch to know more!

Canada&rsquo;s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has announced a snap election set for 28 April, just nine days after taking office. The move comes in response to mounting threats from US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a>, including a proposed trade war and suggestions that Canada should become America&rsquo;s 51st state.
<h2>'President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country'</h2>
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday (March 23), Carney accused Trump of attempting to undermine Canadian sovereignty.
&ldquo;President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen,&rdquo; Carney said.

He added, &ldquo;We&rsquo;re over the shock of the betrayal, but we can never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves. We have to look out for each other.&rdquo;
Carney said the decision to call an early election was driven by urgency in the face of US pressure.
&ldquo;We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;There is so much more to do to secure Canada. To invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada,&rdquo; he added.

During the press conference, Carney was asked about his approach to dealing with Trump and US-Canada relations. He responded that he is &ldquo;fully able to stand up&rdquo; to the American president.
However, Carney added that there are clear conditions for engaging in dialogue with Trump. &ldquo;He has to say it and accept it,&rdquo; referring to Canada&rsquo;s status as a sovereign nation. Only then, Carney said, could discussions on a new trade agreement move forward. As of now, the two leaders have not spoken since Carney was sworn in.
Trump has repeatedly targeted Canada in recent statements. In a Fox News interview, he claimed, &ldquo;Canada was meant to be the 51st state because we subsidise Canada by $200 billion a year.&rdquo;

'So America can own us': Canadian PM Carney accuses Trump of trying to 'break Canada'

Canada&rsquo;s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has called a snap general election for 28 April just nine days after taking office. The move comes as Canada faces growing tensions with US President Donald Trump over trade and sovereignty.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve just requested that the Governor General dissolve Parliament and call an election for April 28. She has agreed,&rdquo; Carney announced on Sunday, referring to Mary Simon, the representative of King Charles III in Canada.

<h2>Carney responds to Trump&rsquo;s pressure</h2>
Explaining the sudden decision, Carney pointed to what he described as an urgent national crisis driven by President Trump&rsquo;s actions.
&ldquo;We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump&rsquo;s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,&rdquo; Carney said.
&ldquo;There is so much more to do to secure Canada. To invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada,&rdquo; he added.

Carney has accused the US president of destabilising Canada through punitive economic measures, including the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, and threats of further tariffs on all Canadian goods from 2 April.
&ldquo;We needed to act because of Donald Trump&rsquo;s tariffs,&rdquo; Carney said.&nbsp;
The snap election follows Carney&rsquo;s recent selection as Liberal Party leader, replacing Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January but remained in office until a new leader was chosen earlier this month.

The opposition Conservatives had initially hoped to centre the election around Trudeau&rsquo;s declining popularity due to inflation and immigration concerns. However, the upcoming vote is now expected to focus on who is best positioned to handle the challenges posed by Trump&rsquo;s presidency.
Carney&rsquo;s tried to tap into the growing wave of nationalism across Canada, driven by President Trump&rsquo;s repeated attacks on the country&rsquo;s sovereignty. The surge in national sentiment has helped boost support for the Liberals in recent polling.
In a post on social media, Carney described the upcoming vote as a defining moment for the nation. &ldquo;The next election will be one of the most consequential in our lifetimes,&rdquo; he wrote.

Elon Musk&rsquo;s companies are set to benefit massively from a wave of new federal contracts and support across several key US government departments, as the Trump administration continues to align policies with Musk&rsquo;s interests, as per The New York Times report.
<h2>A new era of influence</h2>
Appointed by President Trump to lead a cost-cutting effort, Musk is running a group called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has overseen the dismissal of nearly 100,000 federal workers and the shutdown of various agencies. While the exact scope of his power is unclear, his growing influence is undeniable.

<h2>SpaceX embedded across government</h2>
Across the government, Musk&rsquo;s aerospace company SpaceX is becoming deeply embedded.
<ul>
<li>The Pentagon is exploring the use of SpaceX rockets to rapidly transport military equipment around the globe.</li>
<li>NASA is being pushed, partly due to Musk&rsquo;s lobbying, to shift focus towards Mars exploration&mdash;a move that could see SpaceX winning major contracts to send the first humans to the red planet.</li>
<li>The FAA and White House have begun installing Starlink satellite internet terminals, expanding Musk&rsquo;s presence inside federal systems.</li>
</ul>

According to The New York Times, this expansion comes not only from Trump&rsquo;s directives but also from the placement of Musk&rsquo;s allies and former employees in influential government positions.
The New York Times report said, &ldquo;Even if Trump had never given Musk and his employees a government role&mdash;or if former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. had been elected to a second term&mdash;SpaceX would have continued to secure new government work. What has changed is the overall value of the work expected to be delivered to SpaceX.&rdquo;
<h2>Federal contracts</h2>
SpaceX was already a top federal contractor, with $3.8 billion in contracts secured in fiscal year 2024 across 344 deals. But that figure is expected to grow significantly under current policies prioritising private space companies for key services such as:
<ul>
<li>Satellite manufacturing</li>
<li>Communications infrastructure</li>
<li>Government transport missions</li>
</ul>
One major step includes the FAA&rsquo;s recent approval to double SpaceX&rsquo;s Falcon 9 rocket launches at Cape Canaveral, from 48 to 120 per year.

During the Biden administration, SpaceX&rsquo;s Starlink satellite internet service was mostly excluded from federal rural broadband funding. That changed with the appointment of Howard Lutnick as Commerce Secretary. At his confirmation hearing, Lutnick vowed to change how $42 billion in broadband funds are distributed.
&ldquo;Let&rsquo;s use satellites, let&rsquo;s use wireless, and let&rsquo;s use fibre,&rdquo; Lutnick said. &ldquo;And let&rsquo;s do it the cheapest, most efficiently we can.&rdquo; This shift allows Starlink to fully compete for rural broadband deals nationwide.
<h2>Ethical concerns </h2>
Musk&rsquo;s reach inside the government has raised ethical red flags. SpaceX employees embedded in federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration, have been granted ethics waivers allowing them to participate in decisions that may directly benefit SpaceX.
One employee, Theodore Malaska, posted on X that FAA systems are now integrating Starlink satellites to relay weather data to pilots, technology that could bring further revenue to Musk&rsquo;s company. Though the FAA claims only eight Starlink terminals are currently in use, others have appeared in White House offices and at the General Services Administration.

Federal law prohibits employees from making decisions that benefit their financial interests or give the appearance of a conflict. While Musk has claimed he is not personally involved in securing contracts, the whole situation raises unprecedented questions about influence and access.
After a fatal collision between a military helicopter and a civilian plane in January, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy brought in SpaceX teams to help modernise air traffic systems. Musk soon criticised Verizon for delays in implementing the FAA&rsquo;s updated network, calling it a &ldquo;serious risk to air travellers&rdquo;. With Starlink now being considered as an alternative, SpaceX could secure a foothold in another critical infrastructure system.
Musk&rsquo;s influence comes after he donated nearly $300 million to Donald Trump&rsquo;s 2024 campaign and later joined the administration as a cost-cutting&nbsp;adviso.
Blair Levin, a former FCC official, told NYT, &ldquo;The odds of Elon getting whatever Elon wants are much higher today. He is in the White House and Mar-a-Lago. No one ever anticipated that an industry competitor would have access to those kinds of levers of power.&rdquo;
NASA, which has already paid SpaceX over $13 billion in contracts over the past decade, may hand over even more in future deals. These have included cargo and astronaut missions and launching the agency&rsquo;s largest space probes.
Now, Trump has nominated Jared Isaacman, a billionaire entrepreneur who paid SpaceX to fly to orbit twice, as the new head of NASA. Isaacman&rsquo;s firm, Shift4 Payments, previously held a stake in SpaceX, earning $25 million before selling it off. In his ethics filings, Isaacman promised to sever all remaining financial ties to the company.
He will join Michael Altenhofen, another former SpaceX staffer who became a senior NASA adviser in February.

‘Elon getting whatever Elon wants’: How Musk’s $300 million bet on Trump could make him billions

US President Donald Trump on Sunday (Mar 23) reshared an X post by his close aide Elon Musk, suggesting he backs the claim made by the billionaire claiming a political party in South Africa is &ldquo;actively promoting white genocide&rdquo;.
Interestingly, the Tesla CEO&rsquo;s claims were fact-checked by his own Grok AI, which said that some of his claims were not completely true and one was false, according to a Grok conversation link posted by a user.

Musk's remarks came after Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader, Julius Malema led supporters were seen singing &ldquo;kill the Boer, kill the Farmer&rdquo; at a rally commemorating the Sharpeville Massacre on Friday (Mar 21).
Replying to a video from the rally posted on X, Musk wrote, &ldquo;Very few people know that there is a major political party in South Africa that is actively promoting white genocide. The video below was just yesterday. A whole arena chanting about killing white people.&rdquo;

Trump backs Musk's claim of ‘white genocide’ in South Africa, Grok fact-check calls them out

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has revealed that he faced pressure from Washington to criticise President Volodymyr Zelensky after the latter&rsquo;s showdown with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office led to the Ukrainian president walking out of the White House early.
Starmer said in an interview with the New York Times (NYT) that was published March 23, that the U.K. is acting as a bridge between Ukraine and the U.S. and that President Donald Trump&rsquo;s actions, such as rebuking Zelensky, have caused &ldquo;a degree of disorientation&rdquo;. He added that the best response is not to get provoked.
&ldquo;On the day in which the Oval Office meeting between President Trump and President Zelensky didn&rsquo;t go particularly well, we were under pressure to come out very critically with, you know, flowery adjectives to describe how others felt,&rdquo; Starmer told the NYT in the interview.

Starmer said that instead of doing what was desired, and withstanding the pressure, he decided to call both sides to &ldquo;try and get them back on the same page&rdquo;. He added that he has a good relationship with Trump and understands &ldquo;what he&rsquo;s trying to achieve&rdquo;.
Following the heated Oval Office clash, Starmer sent his national security adviser, Jonathan Powell, to Kyiv to counsel Zelensky on how to mend the frayed ties with Trump. The British leader later updated Trump on Kyiv&rsquo;s progress, helping set up a call between the two presidents that saw Zelensky openly back Trump&rsquo;s peace efforts. Washington restored military aid and intelligence support to Kyiv and, at times, threatened Russia with sanctions.

Starmer faced pressure from US to slam Zelensky after Oval Office clash with Trump: Report

The United States is engaging in what&rsquo;s known as &lsquo;shuttlecock diplomacy&rsquo; as it holds separate meetings with Ukrainian and Russian delegations to explore a possible ceasefire in the ongoing Ukraine-Russia war.
On 23 March, a Ukrainian delegation is set to meet with a US technical team in Riyadh. The following day, 24 March, the US will then hold separate talks with a Russian negotiating group, which is being led by a former FSB chief who reportedly played a central role in planning President Vladimir Putin&rsquo;s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Thursday that his country&rsquo;s representatives would meet with US officials in Saudi Arabia and provide a list of key energy infrastructure sites they believe should be excluded from Russian attacks. The US team would then relay this information during its subsequent meeting with the Russian delegation.
This diplomatic method, where one party carries messages between the opposing sides without them sitting down face to face, is known as shuttle diplomacy, or sometimes &lsquo;shuttlecock diplomacy&rsquo;.

<h2>What is shuttlecock diplomacy?</h2>
Shuttle diplomacy is a negotiation strategy used when direct contact between conflicting parties is either difficult or impossible due to tension, mistrust, or political complications. An outside intermediary, often a diplomat, moves between each side, carrying proposals, responses, and demands.

This method became widely recognised in the 1970s when then US Secretary of State Henry Kissinger used it to help mediate the Arab-Israeli conflict by flying between Jerusalem and Cairo to broker peace deals.
In the current context, the US appears to be taking on that intermediary role between Ukraine and Russia, especially with the added complexity of neither side showing willingness for direct negotiations.
Despite this effort, both Russia and Ukraine have previously rejected the White House&rsquo;s version of earlier discussions, casting doubt on claims by Donald Trump that a swift ceasefire is within reach. Trump, who has voiced his desire for a quick resolution to the war, may have overstated the progress made during past US-brokered talks.
