During a conversation with US podcaster and AI researcher Lex Fridman, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared his thoughts on US President Donald Trump, recalling a meaningful moment from the "Howdy Modi" event in Houston. Modi also said that Trump appeared more prepared this time as he pursued a second term.
<h2>'This time, he seems far more prepared'</h2>
"I have seen him during his first term and now as he sees a second. This time, he seems far more prepared. He has a clear roadmap with well-planned steps to achieve his goals. I also had the chance to meet his team, and I believe he has gathered a strong, capable group," Modi said.

Fridman asked Modi, "You recently visited the United States and reinvigorated your friendship with Donald Trump. What do you like about Donald Trump as a friend, as a leader?"
In response, Modi recounted the Houston event, where both leaders addressed a packed stadium. "I'd like to share an event that stands out in my memory. Perhaps from that, you'll understand my perspective. At 'Howdy Modi', both President Trump and I were present, and the stadium was completely full. A large crowd at a political event in the US is quite remarkable. The Indian diaspora had gathered in great numbers. Both of us spoke, and he sat below, attentively listening to me. That, to me, was his humility," Modi said.

"The President of the United States sitting in the crowd while I spoke from the stage was a remarkable gesture. After I finished speaking, I went to thank him and casually suggested, 'If you don&rsquo;t mind, why don&rsquo;t we take a lap around the stadium? There are so many people here; let&rsquo;s walk, wave, and greet them.' In American political life, it&rsquo;s almost unheard of for a President to walk into a crowd of thousands," Modi recalled.
<h2>'He trusted me'</h2>
Without hesitation, Trump agreed, which Modi found deeply moving. "His entire security team was caught off guard, but for me, that moment was special. It showed his courage and his ability to make independent decisions. More than that, it showed that he trusted me in that moment. The way he walked into that crowd without questioning security was incredible. If you watch the video now, you&rsquo;ll be amazed," he said.

Modi then linked that moment to a more recent incident, referring to the assassination attempt on Trump during his campaign. "When he was shot, I saw that same resilience and determination. The same Trump who walked with me in that stadium was the one who, despite being injured, remained unwavering in his dedication to America. His 'America First' approach mirrors my own belief in 'India First,' which is why we connect so well," he remarked.
Despite Trump&rsquo;s time out of office, Modi said that their bond remained strong. "Even when President Biden took over, and four years passed without us meeting, he would still send messages through mutual acquaintances, saying, 'Modi is my friend, convey my regards.' That kind of consistency is rare. Even though we weren&rsquo;t in direct contact, our trust remained intact," he added.

The report by the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) cited "top Israeli officials", and Netanyahu's resharing of the article has somewhat confirmed it's from the PM's office.&nbsp;

After US President Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu showed his support to Elon Musk's Tesla as he hinted at buying electric cars for the Israeli government officials. On the social media platform X, Netanyahu shared the link of an article claiming that Israel has asked Tesla to submit a bid for the cars. The report by the Jewish News Syndicate (JNS) cited "top Israeli officials", and Netanyahu's resharing of the article has somewhat confirmed it's from the PM's office. https://t.co/Gu4K68mJmk — Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו (@netanyahu) March 13, 2025 Also read: 'Rescue mission': How Elon Musk's SpaceX will bring NASA's Sunita Williams back on Earth “We aren’t going to bow to woke trends,” the official told the publication, adding “a car is a car. 'Great cars': Netanyahu to buy electric cars from Elon Musk's Tesla for Israeli officials

Hundreds of Jewish demonstrators overran New York's Trump Tower on Thursday in support of Palestinians as well as detained Palestinian student campaigner Mahmoud Khalil.
Wearing matching red T-shirts emblazoned with "Jews say stop arming Israel," the group protested for over an hour inside the Manhattan skyscraper, where President Donald Trump's family business is headquartered and he has a personal residence.
The building was also where Trump memorably rode down a golden escalator in 2015 to announce his first run for president.
Police said they arrested 98 people, marching under the banner of the group called Jewish Voice for Peace, for crimes including trespassing.
The group, which apparently caught security and police off guard, chanted "fight Nazis, not students," a reference to Trump's crackdown on foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian protests.
Police loaded detained protesters on buses, including a repurposed city bus, in front of the Gucci store at the foot of the tower as a helicopter and drone flew overhead.
Across town at Columbia University, where Khalil had been a student, administrators announced they had issued "multi-year suspensions, temporary degree revocations, and expulsions" of students who had occupied a campus building last year during demonstrations against Israel's war in Gaza.
The short statement did not provide further details, such as who had been sanctioned, but comes less than a week after the Trump administration cut $400 million in federal funding for the university, accusing it of not sufficiently addressing anti-Semitism.
It also comes days after Khalil, a recent graduate and one of the protest leaders, was detained by immigration authorities.
The Trump administration has moved to revoke Khalil's green card, accusing him of leading "activities aligned with Hamas," the militant group whose October 7, 2023 attack triggered the war.
His arrest has triggered outrage from critics of the Trump administration as well as free speech advocates, including some on the political right, who say such a move has a chilling effect on freedom of expression.
<h2>'What fascists do'&nbsp;</h2>
At Trump Tower, filmmaker and Columbia Professor James Schamus told AFP "New York Jews are coming out to demand the release of Mahmoud Khalil and demand that our Jewishness not be weaponized to steal the rights of American citizens and to end our democracy."
"The Trump-Musk regime has made it clear that they are not charging Mahmoud Khalil with any crime, that they are accusing him of having opinions that they say 'align with Hamas'," he added ahead of the protest action.
Confused tourists visiting the skyscraper took pictures and milled around as police attempted to clear protesters, with an officer delivering a large box of MaxCuff plastic cable ties.
"It was suspicious when all these people came in and none went to the restaurant," said a Trump Tower employee who declined to be named.
Police Chief John Chell said the protest passed off without injuries or damage and that the atrium had been cleared of protesters within two hours.
"As Jews of conscience, we know our history and we know where this leads. This is what fascists do as they cement control" said Jewish Voice for Peace member Jane Hirschmann, a Jewish New Yorker whose grandfather and uncle were abducted by the Nazis.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared its purpose to cancel vehicle emission regulations established by the Biden administration to speed up electric vehicle (EV) adoption. Historically the Trump administration has focused on dismantling environmental policies established by its predecessor through this recent development.
The EPA plans to review vehicle emissions standards for 2024 that meant almost 50% better emissions control for tailpipes from cars in 2032 compared to 2027. The rules required between 35% and 56% of new vehicle sales as electric vehicles during the period from 2030 to 2032. The United States already received backing from Ford Motor regarding these particular regulations.
The EPA has decided to reexamine the heavy-duty truck soot and smog emissions regulation from 2022 because it presents possible increased costs for truck manufacturers. The 2022 standards surpass their predecessor regulations by 80% yet projected to stop about 2900 fatal diseases per year and produce USD 29 billion in total benefits.

Government actions from the Trump administration reach past emissions control standards to other matters. The EPA sent Congress an EPA-approval of California's 2035 gasoline-only vehicle sale ban plan that Congress has the option to invalidate. The same organisation confirmed that this decision cannot be reviewed by any agency. Congress currently explores the elimination of EV tax incentives.
Leadership at the Department of Transportation under Secretary Sean Duffy canceled the fuel economy standards while halting funding for EV charging network development. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) they enforced new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards which would reach 50.4 miles per gallon by 2031 to minimize gas usage along with pollutants. The current director of NHTSA received orders from Duffy to review existing regulations on heavy-duty pickup trucks and vans.
Environmental organisations strongly criticize these administration actions as they believe these changes threaten public well-being while obstructing clean energy development. Supporters of the rollbacks argue that they will reduce costs for consumers and businesses, and that the previous rules were overly burdensome.

'Can do very bad things for Russia if needed': Trump says US officials en route to Moscow for ceasefire talks

President Donald Trump on Wednesday (March 12) defended his decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminium, insisting that it would bring fairness to US trade. His comments came as major trade partners including the&nbsp;EU and Canada announced retaliatory measures against the new US tariffs.

Shortly after the meeting began, Trump, without being asked, brought up the issue of tariffs, particularly the concept of reciprocal tariffs. "I don't know why people get upset about that," he said. "There's nothing more fair than that."
<h2>US to respond to EU tariffs</h2>
Trump also pledged that the US would respond to the European Union&rsquo;s decision to impose tariffs on $28 billion worth of American goods from 1 April. The EU's move was a direct response to the new US steel and aluminum tariffs.

The tariff escalation follows a retaliatory move by Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who threatened to impose a 25 per cent electricity surcharge supplied to over 1.5 million US homes. Ford also reversed course after discussions with US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.&nbsp;
Meanwhile, Canada's in-waiting Prime Minister, Mark Carney, refrained from direct talks with Trump until his formal swearing-in. However, he faces a daunting task as Trump signals more tariffs. Business leaders warn of rapid tariff shift affecting consumer and investor confidence. Businesses across industries, including airlines and retail, are reporting lower consumer spending as a result of economic uncertainty. A New York Fed survey indicates that US households are growing more pessimistic about inflation and job security. Economists also warn of a prolonged recession if trade tensions persist.

National Intelligence Director Tulsi Gabbard announced on Monday (Mar 10) that she has revoked the security clearances of dozens of former national security officials.
In a social media post, Gabbard said that she stripped security clearances of top Biden aides and those who pursued cases against Trump under the president's directive. The names included former Secretary of State Antony Blinken, former national security adviser Jake Sullivan, and former US Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, who oversaw the prosecution of Trump supporters following the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack.

US: Judge blocks deportation of anti-Israel Columbia protest leader Mahmoud Khalil

Recession fears in the US are reflecting in Wall Street's meltdown since last week, with the selloff extending to Asian markets. Wall Street saw a deep selloff overnight, marking its worst drop since September 2022. The selloff was fueled by investor fears over mounting trade tensions and recession risks. This comes as President Donald Trump refused to rule out an economic downturn.

US markets in turmoil over recession risks

Mahmoud Khalil , a pro-Palestinian activist from Columbia University, was recently arrested by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for allegedly leading pro-Palestine protests at the Ivy League campus in New York City in 2024. Khalil was the leader of the Columbia University Apartheid Divest and was in his apartment on Saturday (March 8) when he was arrested.&nbsp;
Soon after the arrest, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio took to X and said, "We will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported." Khalil is a permanent resident of the US.&nbsp;

The US president posted on his social media platform Truth Social on Monday (March 10) saying Khalil's arrest is "one of many to come" against pro-Palestine students.
Trump alleged that these protesters are not students but "paid agitators".
He added that his administration would not "tolerate pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic and anti-American activity".
"We will find, apprehend, and deport these terrorist sympathisers from our country never to return again. If you support terrorism, including the slaughtering of innocent men, women, and children, your presence is contrary to our national and foreign policy interests, and you are not welcome here. We expect every one of America&rsquo;s Colleges and Universities to comply," Trump wrote.&nbsp;
The arrest of the 30-year-old student - who graduated last year in December - led to protests in the US from civil rights groups and free advocates.&nbsp;

In a significant policy reversal, US President Donald Trump is set to lift his ban on military aid and intelligence support for Ukraine following a last-ditch appeal by UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, reports said.&nbsp;
The move, if it happens, marks a significant shift from Trump's recent suspension of all aid and intelligence-sharing with Kyiv, a decision that had also barred allies like the UK from sharing US intelligence with Ukraine as it continues to battle Russia.

<h2>Trump-Starmer talks</h2>
Starmer, as per a Mirror UK report, spoke directly with Trump for approximately 20 minutes ahead of scheduled peace talks in Saudi Arabia, pressing for the reinstatement of intelligence-sharing and military assistance. UK officials have also worked behind the scenes to encourage Ukraine to meet US conditions to secure the resumption of support. A spokesperson for Downing Street confirmed that the prime minister hoped for a "positive outcome" from the discussions.
"The prime minister said he hoped there would be a positive outcome to the talks that would enable US and intelligence to be restarted," said the Downing Street spokesperson.

Addressing the Parliamentary Labour Party, Starmer emphasised the situation's urgency: The "real world is moving quickly and people look to their government to seize it and shape it for the benefit of the British people."&nbsp;
"That's why I have been clear the security of Ukraine is the future of Europe and our support for Ukraine is unwavering. Our defence and security must come first. That is what we owe to the British people," he added.
