Moreover, the US government also targeted at least three law firms which according to Trump, helped his political opponents or helped prosecute him unfairly.

What all Columbia University accepted to do for $400mn from Trump administration?

If you&rsquo;re dreaming of taking a selfie at the Statue of Liberty or looking at the city from the top of the Empire State Building, there&rsquo;s one important thing you shouldn&rsquo;t overlook: understanding your rights in the US as an international visitor.
Since Donald Trump returned to the White House, his administration has reintroduced tough immigration policies promised during his campaign. In recent weeks, multiple tourists heading to the US have been detained at the border, causing concern among foreign travellers and drawing criticism from other nations.

UK, Germany issue travel warnings after woman detained &lsquo;like Hannibal&rsquo;</a>
Here&rsquo;s a simple guide to help you understand what to expect before visiting the United States:
<h2>Can US border officials still stop and search you if you have valid travel documents?</h2>
Yes. US customs officers have the authority to stop anyone at entry points to determine if they&rsquo;re allowed into the country. They can search your luggage and personal belongings, even if there&rsquo;s no specific reason to suspect you of wrongdoing.
<h2>Can US border officials search your mobile phone or laptop?</h2>
The US government claims the right to search electronic devices like phones and laptops without needing specific suspicion. In some cases, customs officers have asked travellers to provide passwords to access their devices.

<h2>What happens if you refuse to unlock my phone or laptop?</h2>
If you are a US citizen, you can&rsquo;t be denied entry for refusing to unlock your devices. However, your refusal may cause delays, additional questioning, or even result in your device being taken for further inspection. Non-citizens may face stricter consequences.
<h2>Can you still enter without a visa if you are from a visa-waiver country?</h2>
Generally, the Visa Waiver Program allows travellers from around 40 countries to visit the US for up to 90 days for tourism or business without needing a visa. US citizens can also travel to these countries under similar terms.

However, travellers must still apply for Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) approval at least 72 hours before their flight. Be aware that if you&rsquo;ve travelled to certain countries, such as Cuba after 12 January 2021, you may not be eligible for an ESTA and would instead need to apply for a visa.
ESTA holders cannot study or work permanently in the US and have limited rights &ndash; including fewer protections against deportation, which may include mandatory detention.
<h2>What if you get detained at the border?</h2>
Civil rights groups now recommend that non-citizens travelling to the US carry contact details for an immigration lawyer or an emergency contact. If you are detained, it&rsquo;s best to follow officers' instructions and contact legal support immediately.
<h2>What rights do visitors actually have?</h2>
You do have the right to remain silent, but using that right at the border could work against you. For example, if an officer asks whether you plan to work during your visit and you don&rsquo;t respond, your entry could be denied.

If denied entry, travellers may be allowed to &ldquo;withdraw&rdquo; their application and return home. In such cases, the visa is typically cancelled, and the person is sent back on the next available flight.
It&rsquo;s important to know your rights and be fully prepared before travelling to the US, especially as policies have tightened again under the Trump administration.

US to join Royal Commonwealth Society? King Charles' 'secret offer' to Trump

NASA has dropped its longstanding commitment to land the first woman and person of colour on the moon. The space agency has taken this step in response to President Donald Trump's directives to shut down diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) practices at US federal agencies.
<h2>First woman, first person of colour on the Moon</h2>
The promise to send the first woman, and the first person of colour, to the Moon was a central plank of NASA's Artemis programme.

Artemis is scheduled to return humans to the surface of the moon in 2027. Before this, NASA's Apollo mission in December 1972 took humans to the lunar surface.
Orlando Sentinel reports that previously, on NASA's website, the Artemis landing page included the words: "NASA will land the first woman, first person of colour, and first international partner astronaut on the Moon using innovative technologies to explore more of the lunar surface than ever before".
Now, this phrase seems to have gone missing from the page.

<h2>NASA statement</h2>
In a statement to the Guardian, NASA spokesperson Allard Beutel said that the phrase was removed in line with Trump's order.
"In keeping with the president&rsquo;s executive order, we&rsquo;re updating our language regarding plans to send crew to the lunar surface as part of NASA&rsquo;s Artemis campaign. We look forward to learning more from [and] about the Trump administration&rsquo;s plans for our agency and expanding exploration at the moon and Mars for the benefit of all," he said.

Since Trump took power, he has issued a number of directives against "wokeness". Just days after his inauguration, the Trump administration asked federal agencies to terminate roles and offices related to DEI programmes.
"Each agency, department, or commission head shall take action to terminate, to the maximum extent allowed by law, all DEI, DEIA, and 'environmental justice' offices and positions within 60 days," said a 24 January 2025 memo from the US Office of Personnel Management, referring to jobs aimed at boosting "diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility."

US President Donald Trump acknowledged his ally Elon Musk's potential conflicts of interest for the first time on Friday (Mar 21) and said that the DOGE chief should not be allowed to see top-secret plans for any war with China.
The rare admission comes after weeks of Trump dismissing the wealthy businessman's conflict of interests in leading the cost-cutting Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

<h2>What did Trump say about Musk?</h2>
When asked to comment on media reports that Musk, the world's richest man, would receive a classified Pentagon briefing on US war strategy, Trump said, "I don't want to show it to anybody."
"You're talking about a potential war with China," he noted, adding, "Certainly you wouldn&rsquo;t show it to a businessman who is helping us so much".
"Elon has businesses in China and he would be susceptible perhaps to that," admitted Trump.

However, the US President then jumped to Musk's defence. Describing Musk as a "patriot" Trump then hailed the DOGE chief's efforts to slash back the US federal government, including the US Defense Department. Trump made this statement while unveiling a contract for Boeing to build the next-generation F-47 fighter jet.
This comes after Musk, on Friday visited the Pentagon, and reports, first published in the New York Times, speculated about the visit. Reports suggested that Musk was to receive a briefing in a secure room dubbed "The Tank" on maritime tactics and targeting plans.

Trump makes rare admission on Musk’s conflicts of interest, says 'wouldn’t show' businessman China war plans

US President Donald Trump has compared the recent wave of vandalism targeting Tesla showrooms across the country to the Capitol riot on 6 January 2021, claiming the damage inflicted on Elon Musk&rsquo;s company is far worse.
<h2>'I view these people as terrorists'</h2>
Speaking to reporters from the Oval Office on Friday, Trump said, &ldquo;I view these people as terrorists, just like others. When I looked at those showrooms burning and those cars &mdash; not one or two, like seven, eight, 10 burning, exploding all over the place. These are terrorists. You didn&rsquo;t have that on Jan. 6, I can tell you.&rdquo;

Trump criticised Democrats for not speaking out about the violence against Tesla, accusing them of hypocrisy given their strong condemnation of the Capitol riot, which saw Trump supporters breach Congress in protest of the 2020 election result.
He also referred to the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter killed by Capitol Police during the 6 January events.
&ldquo;You didn&rsquo;t have anything like that on Jan 6, which is sort of amazing because on Jan. 6, the Democrats were talking. Nobody was killed other than a very beautiful young woman, Ashli, Ashli Babbitt. Nobody was killed,&rdquo; he said.

The president went on to claim that the attacks on Tesla were part of &ldquo;an organised event,&rdquo; suggesting that the coordinated appearance of protest signs indicated larger forces at play.
&ldquo;The people that finance it are, in my opinion, in just as big of trouble as the people who are setting the match, starting the fires,&rdquo; Trump said.
Earlier in the day, Trump issued a strong warning to those involved in vandalising Tesla facilities, hinting at severe punishments.

When I looked at those showrooms burning and those cars — not one or two, like seven, eight, 10 burning, exploding all over the place. These are terrorists. You didn’t have that on Jan. 6, I can tell you.” Also read: China war or DOGE cuts? Inside Musk’s controversial Pentagon visit that Trump, Hegseth rushed to defend Trump criticised Democrats for not speaking out about the violence against Tesla, accusing them of hypocrisy given their strong condemnation of the Capitol riot, which saw Trump supporters breach Congress in protest of the 2020 election result. He also referred to the fatal shooting of Ashli Babbitt, a Trump supporter killed by Capitol Police during the 6 January events. “You didn’t have anything like that on Jan 6, which is sort of amazing because on Jan. 6, the Democrats were talking. Nobody was killed other than a very beautiful young woman, Ashli, Ashli Babbitt. Nobody was killed,” he said. Earlier in the day, Trump issued a strong warning to those involved in vandalising Tesla facilities, hinting at severe punishments. <h2>UK strengthens warning</h2>
The UK Foreign Office has revised its guidance, now warning that travellers could face arrest or detention if they fail to comply with US entry rules. The updated advice highlights that laws are &ldquo;strictly&rdquo; enforced.
&ldquo;You should comply with all entry, visa and other conditions of entry. The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules strictly. You may be liable to arrest or detention if you break the rules,&rdquo; the advice states.
Earlier this year, the travel warning was less severe, saying, &ldquo;The authorities in the US set and enforce entry rules.&rdquo;

The update follows the widely reported case of Rebecca Burke, a 28-year-old graphic artist from the UK, who was held for 19 days by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement over what was described as a &ldquo;visa mix-up.&rdquo;
Her parents, Paul and Andrea Burke, spoke to the BBC about the ordeal, describing how their daughter was taken in &ldquo;leg chains, waist chains and handcuffs.&rdquo;
&ldquo;She is not Hannibal Lecter,&rdquo; said Paul Burke, adding that the experience left Rebecca &ldquo;traumatised.&rdquo; She has since returned home.

US no longer safe for tourists? UK, Germany issue travel warnings after woman detained ‘like Hannibal’

In his first term in office, from 2017 to 2021, U.S. president Donald Trump put forward budget proposals providing for deep cuts to international development and diplomacy. Each of his three evisceration plans failed to pass Congress.&nbsp;
His three attempts failed largely because of alarmed responses from leaders of the Armed Forces, who argued that military might alone could not solve America&rsquo;s conflicts and should be complemented by soft power. &nbsp; &nbsp;
The budgetary wrangling in his first term brought into sharp focus Trump&rsquo;s disdain for the civilian agencies that make up &ldquo;soft power&rdquo;, &nbsp;chiefly the foreign service, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Voice of America and a number of lesser-known organisations devoted to conflict resolution&nbsp;
Three months into Trump&rsquo;s second term in the White House, the institutions he unsuccessfully tried to dismantle before are close to extinction. The term &ldquo;soft power&rdquo; is now rarely used in debates over the future of what Trump has termed &ldquo;the Golden Age&rdquo; of America.&nbsp;
Coined in the late 1980s by the Harvard political scientist Joseph Nye, the term soft power includes cultural and educational exchange programmes meant to improve the image of the United States and reinforce the influence of American popular culture, from McDonald&rsquo;s to Hollywood movies.&nbsp;
Applied skilfully, soft power helps to persuade others to do what a government wants without force or coercion. &nbsp;
Trump prefers coercion -- &nbsp;in the form of tariffs. Within days of taking office, he imposed 25 percent tariffs on Mexico and Canada and ten percent on China. The ostensible rationale: they were not doing enough to stop the flow of fentanyl, the potent drug blamed for more than 100,000 overdose deaths per year.&nbsp;
The tariffs Trump announced signalled the start of what the Wall Street Journal headlined The Dumbest Trade War in History. The president plans to widen it next month by imposing &ldquo;reciprocal&rdquo; tariffs to match the rates other countries charge on imports from the U.S. That means a global trade war.&nbsp;
While the tariff wars became a dominant topic by economists, analysts and policymakers, the Trump administration pushed on with a sweeping campaign to reshape the country by cutting the size of the 2.3 million strong federal work force and eliminating agencies deemed unnecessary.&nbsp;
As Trump and his closest aide, Elon Musk, see it, they include the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), the Voice of America, and the United States Institute for Peace (USIP). &nbsp;
Trump gave Musk, the world&rsquo;s richest man, immense power by making him the head of a newly-established organisation, the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). It is not officially part of the government but has been instrumental in firing or offering buyout to more than 100,000 people so far. &nbsp;
In February, Musk described USAID as &ldquo;a criminal organisation. Time for it to die&rdquo; he said in a post on his social media platform X. He did not elaborate on his assertion but within a month, the vast majority of USAID programmes had been terminated and thousands of employees were laid off &nbsp;and those working overseas recalled.&nbsp;
USAID&rsquo;s missions around the globe ranged from famine detection and polio vaccinations to emergency food kitchens in conflict zones. Freezing funds for humanitarian assistance had almost immediate effect, including shutting off more than 1,100 communal kitchens in Sudan for people left destitute by the country&rsquo;s civil war.&nbsp;
The Council of Foreign Relations describes USAID as &ldquo;the foremost tool of U.S. soft power.&rdquo; It was set up by John F. Kennedy in 1961to cultivate goodwill toward the United States. Among its notable successes were its role in eradicating smallpox and its part in a global campaign to fight polio. &nbsp;
After a review of USAID&rsquo;s work abroad led by Elon Musk, the Trump administration ended 5,200 of USAID&rsquo;s 6,200 programmes, leaving intact only 18 percent which will be administered by the Department of State. Critics of the cuts say they leave the field wide open for China to expand its influence around the globe.&nbsp;
That also applies to another controversial &nbsp;move by Trump 2.0: silencing the Voice of America. The government-funded broadcasting network first went on the air in 1942 to counter Nazi propaganda. It expanded over the years to become one of the world&rsquo;s &nbsp;biggest broadcasters, producing digital, TV, and radio content in 48 languages.&nbsp;
In Trump&rsquo;s first term in office he repeatedly criticized what he called the entrenched liberal bias of VOA journalists and accused them of spreading &ldquo;radical propaganda&rdquo; &ndash; the same charges he routinely levels&nbsp;at traditional media.&nbsp;
On March 16, almost the entire staff of 1,300 journalists and assistants were placed on administrative leave. VOA went off the air. A catchy headline in the Washington Post put the closure in context: &ldquo;Stalin, Mao and Khomeini couldn&rsquo;t quell freedom&rsquo;s voice. But Trump did.&rdquo;&nbsp;
There was enthusiastic applause from China and Iran, two countries ruled by dictatorial regimes who hated VOA&rsquo;s coverage of events their own media were forbidden to touch.&nbsp;
The Chinese Communist Party&rsquo;s international media outlet, Global Times, headlined the demise of what it called &ldquo;the lie factory.&rsquo; &nbsp;
It added, gleefully, that &ldquo;from smearing human rights in China&rsquo;s Xinjiang (province) to hyping up disputes in the South China Sea, from supporting &lsquo;Taiwan independence&rsquo; forces to backing Hong Kong rioters, from fabricating the so-called China virus narrative&hellip;almost every malicious falsehood about China has VOA&rsquo;s fingerprint all over it.&rdquo; &nbsp;
Praise also came from Iran, where VOA is banned as an &ldquo;enemy broadcaster&rdquo;. The broadcaster's Farsi speakers, about 100, are estimated to have reached around 9.5 million social media followers with news delivered via satellite and VPNs. &nbsp;
In Trump&rsquo;s first term, an open letter by 151 retired generals and admirals said that &nbsp;
&ldquo;elevating diplomacy and development alongside defence is critical to America&rsquo;s safety.&rdquo; They quoted then Defence Secretary James Mattis as saying that America had &ldquo;two fundamental powers, the power of intimidation and the power of inspiration.&rdquo; &nbsp;
In the era of Trump 2.0, inspiration looks to be reserved for those who like tariffs and trade wars.&nbsp;

<h2>Limited ceasefire and peace talks</h2>
The White House confirmed that Russia has agreed to a temporary ceasefire targeting energy and infrastructure in Ukraine. This is part of a US-led effort to bring the conflict to an end.

Following the call, the White House stated that both sides had agreed to hold "technical negotiations" on a maritime ceasefire, with further discussions planned for a full ceasefire and lasting peace.
&ldquo;These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East,&rdquo; the White House announced.
<h2>Putin&rsquo;s two key conditions for ending the war</h2>
During the call, Putin made it clear that the conflict could only be resolved if Western nations stopped supplying military aid and intelligence to Ukraine.
"It was emphasised that the key condition for preventing an escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution through political and diplomatic means should be a complete cessation of foreign military assistance and the provision of intelligence to Kyiv," the Kremlin said.
Additionally, Putin insisted that Ukraine must not be allowed to rearm.

'We connect so well': Trump shares Modi's podcast on Truth Social after Indian PM praises US president

The US administration under Donald Trump deported over 250 alleged gang members, mostly Venezuelans, to El Salvador. This was just hours after a US judge&rsquo;s ruling to halt the flights on Saturday (March 15). The deportations came after the US president invoked the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 law meant only to be used in wartime.
El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said 238 members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and 23 members of the Salvadoran gang MS-13 arrived in the country. He said this was under a deal in which Trump would pay the Central American country to keep them in custody. The alleged gang members are to be kept in the country's 40,000-person capacity &ldquo;terrorism confinement centre&rdquo;.&nbsp;

WORLD | James Boasberg - the US district attempted to halt the deportation of all the individuals but failed. He even had ordered the deportation flights already in the air to return to the US, but it did not happen

The US administration under Donald Trump deported over 250 alleged gang members, mostly Venezuelans, to El Salvador. This was just hours after a US judge’s ruling to halt the flights on Saturday (March 15). The deportations came after the US president invoked the Alien Enemies Act, a 1798 law meant only to be used in wartime. El Salvador President Nayib Bukele said 238 members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and 23 members of the Salvadoran gang MS-13 arrived in the country. He said this was under a deal in which Trump would pay the Central American country to keep them in custody. The alleged gang members are to be kept in the country's 40,000-person capacity “terrorism confinement centre”. The White House defended Trump administration's act, saying the judge had no authority to block the deportation. “A single judge in a single city cannot direct the movements of an aircraft ... full of foreign alien terrorists who were physically expelled from US soil,” White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in a statement. She added that the court had “no lawful basis”. 'Oopsie … too late' After this, Bukele took to social media and wrote, “Oopsie … Too late," with a laughing emoji. After his post, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio thanked El Salvador’s leader for accepting the deported people. Rubio took to the social media platform X and said, “Thank you for your assistance and friendship, President Bukele." However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has consistently rejected the idea of giving up land, and some European leaders have expressed concerns that making such concessions would effectively reward Russia for its invasion.
Efforts are underway to convince the Russian president to agreeon a 30-day ceasefire deal that was accepted by Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky last week. &nbsp;
