As per the Regional Meteorological Centre, New Delhi, the weather is expected to remain the same till Thursday, May 18 with a partly cloudy sky, drizzle and gusty winds. The clear sky is expected to be visible from May 19 to May 21. There is a very high possibility of thunderstorms and a good amount of rain on May 22 and May 23.&nbsp;

<h2>Delhi weather update: Deteriorating poor air quality&nbsp;</h2>

Due to these unexpected thunderstorms the last week, the air quality in the capital deteriorated and the visibility was reduced to 1000 metres. &nbsp;

As per Kuldeep Srivastava, the head of the IMD's regional forecasting centre, the wind speed was 30-35 kmph in the early hours on May 16; however, it will come down during the day, allowing the dust to settle down. The meteorologists have attributed these dusty conditions to a combination of intense heat in northwest India over the past five days, parched soil due to the absence of rainfall and strong winds that have persisted since midnight, as reported by PTI.

The IMD said recently that the onset of the Southwest monsoon over Kerala is likely to be delayed this year, predicting its arrival on June 4, four days after the normal date predicted on June 1.

"Southwest monsoon normally sets in over Kerala on June 1 with a standard deviation of about 7 days. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has been issuing operational forecasts for the date of monsoon onset over Kerala from 2005 onwards. An indigenously developed state-of-the-art statistical model with a model error of +- 4 days is used for the purpose," IMD stated.

Last year, the monsoon over Kerala arrived early on May 29. The southwest monsoon over the Indian mainland is marked by monsoon onset over Kerala which is also an important indicator characterising the transition from a hot and dry season to a rainy season.&nbsp;

The national capital and NCR region are expected to continue experiencing cool and wet conditions for the next two-three days, though the rainfall activity might reduce.&nbsp;Delhi, on May 3, witnessed heavy rainfall making it the wettest day of the year 2023 so far with the rain exceeding the usual fall.

On Thursday (May 4), the maximum and minimum temperatures might&nbsp;vary between 17 degrees and 32 degrees Celsius respectively. The air quality also deteriorated from satisfactory to moderate. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said the rain activity is likely to reduce, said a TOI report.

The weather department said an AQI between zero and 50 is considered to be "good", 51 and 100 "satisfactory", 101 and 200 "moderate", 201 and 300 "poor", 301 and 400 "very poor", and 401 and 500 as "severe".

IMD weather scientist Kuldeep Srivastav said, "There is a strong western disturbance trough over the western Himalayas and an cyclonic circulation over north-east Rajasthan and adjoining southern Haryana. This weather system covers entire Delhi-NCR, so the region saw consistent rain. The activity will pacify and Thursday may see drizzle or very light rain at one&nbsp;or two places, though the sky will remain unclear. The maximum temperature will rise."

Delhi on Wednesday&nbsp;witnessed bright clear skies for some time after a wet start to the week, although later in the evening there was widespread heavy rainfall throughout the capital with its base station Safdarjung recording 20.99mm in nine hours, the highest this year, surpassing January 30, 2023 record.&nbsp;

So far, the city has recorded 36.9mm of rain in the first three days of May, exceeding the month's usual rainfall.&nbsp;

On Wednesday, several areas&nbsp;like Palam recorded 11.8mm, Lodhi Road recorded 24.6mm, Ridge area recorded 14.6mm, Ayangar recorded 13.8mm, Mayur Vihar recorded 8mm and Pitampura recorded 55.5mm of rainfall respectively.&nbsp;

Lajpat Nagar, Sarai Kale Khan, Mehrauli Badarpur Road, Pul Prahladpur underpass and Zakhir witnessed waterlogging&nbsp;on roads.

The maximum temperature recorded was 30.6 degrees Celsius, nine notches below the usual, while the minimum temperature was clocked at 20.1 degrees Celsius, five notches below normal.&nbsp;

The wet and stormy weather caused flights from Mumbai to be diverted to Ahmedabad.&nbsp;

The weather on Friday morning in Delhi was relatively chilly and people woke up to cloudy weather. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has also issued an orange alert, predicting heavy rainfall, in the national capital.

"Generally cloudy sky. Light to moderate rain/ thundershowers accompanied with gusty winds (speed 30-40 kph) and hail," the IMD said in its forecast for Delhi on Friday.

According to airport authorities, at least 22 domestic flights were diverted from the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi till 8 pm on March 30 due to unexpected weather conditions.&nbsp;

In the wake of the rainfall alert, the Delhi airport issued an advisory on Thursday evening, “Due to bad weather, flight operations at Delhi airport are affected. Passengers are requested to get in touch with the airline concerned for update flight information".

"We request passengers to check the flight status before leaving home and reach out to our customer care numbers for queries," it added.

Earlier today, <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-%26-economy/indias-first-biofuel-powered-flight-lands-at-delhi-airport-161830">Delhi Airport</a> had issued a statement, informing that flight operations at the airport have been affected due to poor visibility.

"Normal operations have been suspended at Delhi airport due to poor visibility, only CAT III B (instrument landing system) compliant pilots can land. Passengers are requested to stay in touch with the airline concerned for updated flight information. Due to the foggy weather conditions and low visibility at the airport, three flights diverted and none has been canceled," Delhi Airport said in a statement.

A CAT IIIB system helps with a precision approach and landing when the runway visibility is at a distance no less than 50 feet (15m) and is at a visual range less than 200 meters and most certainly not less than 50 meters.

Dense fog was also witnessed at Palam this morning (visibility 150 meter) whereas moderate fog was reported at Safdarjung (visibility 600 meter).

The AQI between the range of 51 to 100 is considered as satisfactory, 101-200 is moderate, 201-300 falls under the category of poor. 300-400 is considered as 'very poor'&nbsp;and range between 401-500 falls under the category as 'hazardous'.

Within the national capital, the AQI of most places clocked in the 'severe category'.

At Dhirpur, Delhi University, Pitampura, Chandni Chowk and Mathura Road, the index clocked at 425, 539, 482, 442, and 433, respectively.

The AQI at IGI Airport, Pusa Road and Lodhi Road clocked in the 'very poor category'&nbsp;with the index at 363, 319 and 308, respectively.

Meanwhile, the maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, as per the India Meterological Department (IMD).

The cold wave is expected to grip the national in the next few days with the maximum and minimum temperatures are forecast at 24 degrees Celsius and 6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, respectively.

As temperatures dipped in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), the homeless people, who are the worst sufferers in the chilly weather season, continued to turn towards crowded night shelters in different parts of the city to escape the icy cold winds.

Meanwhile, the IMD said that an active western disturbance is very likely to cause fairly widespread rain and snow over western Himalayan region and isolated rainfall over Punjab and northern parts of Haryana during the next 24 hours.

"Likely cloud cover and enhanced humidity could lead to further gradual increase in night minimum temperatures over parts of northwest India, thereby reducing the severity of cold wave conditions during next 24 hours. However, dense fog conditions are likely to occur during late night to morning hours over these regions, especially on January 2 and 3," the weather agency said in a bulletin.

Within the national capital, the AQI of most places clocked in the 'severe category'. At Dhirpur, Delhi University, Pitampura, Chandni Chowk and Mathura Road, the index clocked at 425, 539, 482, 442, and 433, respectively. The AQI at IGI Airport, Pusa Road and Lodhi Road clocked in the 'very poor category' with the index at 363, 319 and 308, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum temperature on Tuesday was recorded at 23 degrees Celsius, three degrees above normal, while the minimum temperature settled at 4 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal, as per the India Meterological Department (IMD). The cold wave is expected to grip the national in the next few days with the maximum and minimum temperatures are forecast at 24 degrees Celsius and 6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, respectively. However, dense fog conditions are likely to occur during late night to morning hours over these regions, especially on January 2 and 3," the weather agency said in a bulletin. The IMD further said that another active western disturbance is likely to cause widespread rain and snow with isolated heavy falls over western Himalayan region and scattered to fairly widespread rainfall with isolated hailstorms over parts of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on January 4 and 5.

According to a report, the air quality of Delhi is expected to further drop as winds coming from the northwestern side is likely to bring toxic pollutants from Haryana and Punjab as the crop burning has begun.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature dropped to 17.5 degrees Celsius — the lowest minimum in seven years between October 1 and 15, officials in the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.

According to IMD the maximum temperature to hit 33.0 Celsius in the day.

The air quality of north India worsens drastically every year during the winter months with smog covering the region due to the burning of paddy straw in Punjab and Haryana in the months of October and November. According to reports, it is one of the major contributors to air pollution in Delhi and its neighbouring cities.

On Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Imran Hussain expressed concern over the unabated stubble burning noticed in the neighbouring states.

Delhi air quality deteriorates; Anand Vihar in 'hazardous' category with 407 AQI

The best quality of air in Delhi in this year was recorded Tuesday as incessant rains washed away pollutants from the air, said authorities.

This is the third time in the year that the quality of air was registered as good and the Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 38, which is the lowest for this year, according to the Centre's System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research institute (SAFAR).

An official of Central Pollution Control Board said rains in the last few days washed away pollutants from the air which led to the quality of air improving.

Last Saturday AQI of 48 was recorded, while on July 28 AQI of 43 was recorded.

An AQI in the range of 0-50 is considered 'good', 51-100 'satisfactory', 101-200 'moderate', 201-300 'poor', 301-400 'very poor' and 401-500 'severe'.

The PM10 level (presence of particles with diameter less than 10 mm) was recorded as 'good' at 37 in Delhi-NCR and 35 in Delhi. The PM2.5 level (presence of particles with diameter less than 2.5 mm) was 19 in Delhi-NCR and 18 in Delhi, according to the CPCB data.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, as the rains washed away pollutants from the air, Yamuna river&nbsp;crossed the danger mark and is currently flowing at 205.24 metres, officials said, warning that the level is expected to further increase.

Around 11,19,430 cusecs of water was discharged from Hathani Kund Barrage till 2 PM, the officials said.

The water level is expected to further increase and an alert has been sounded by the authorities, they added.

The danger mark of the Yamuna river is 204.83 metres.

Delhi records year's best quality of air on Tuesday: Report

Air quality in Delhi on Wednesday moved to the "sever" level following groud-level dust storm in the Western parts of India which have led to a massive increase in coarser particles in the air, the Central Pollution Control Board data showed.

The CPCB data showed that the PM10 (particles with diameter less than 10mm) level was beyond "severe" at 778 in Delhi-NCR area and 824 in Delhi particularly, leading to hazy conditions and limiting visibility.

The air quality hovered in the "moderate" category all last week and rose to "poor" on Monday. &nbsp;On Wednesday morning, air pollution monitoring agency AQICN reported that PM2.5 levels at RK Puram and Okhla Phase II at around 0800 hours were at 660 and 738, respectively. Rohini (838), Wazirpur (858), DTU (849) and Anand Vihar (812) were even worse. Most of the other stations reported readings ranging between 325 and 800.

Moreover, the severe dust storms in Rajasthan and Haryana have also led to many people facing breathing problems in these states due to the suspended dust.

Gufran Beig, a scientist at the Centre-run System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research institute, said the dust storm deteriorated the air quality in Delhi-NCR.

"There was a ground-level dust storm in the western part of the country that increased drastically coarser particles in the air, causing a spike in pollution levels in Delhi," he said.

But the air quality should improve later today, he said.

"Such dust storms accompanied by high-speed winds (30-40 kmph) do not last too long due to which the air quality will return to normal by this evening," Beig added.
