He finished with a combined lift of 355 kg. It consisted of 163 kg in his final Snatch attempt and a best of 192 kg in the Clean and Jerk category. Cameroon's Junior Periclex Ngadja Nyabeyeu took home the Gold with a combined lift of 361 kg, which consisted of the best lift of 160 kg in the Snatch category and the best of 201 kg in the C&amp;J category. The silver medal went to Samoa`s Jack Hitila Opeloge who had a combined lift of 358 kg. It consisted of the best lift of 164 kg in the Snatch category and 194 in the C&amp;J category.

Lovepreet Singh was off to a great start. He lifted a solid 157 kg in the first Snatch attempt and he took the lead after this. His other opponents outdid him and he was dethroned from the first spot. His second Snatch attempt was an impressive 161 kg, which once again placed him at the top. However, in his final attempt, Canada`s Pierre-Alexandre Bessette lifted an impressive 163 kg, which pushed him to number one and Lovepreet was thrown at number two. Recently, England's Matt Walls suffered a horrific crash and got stitches&nbsp;on his forehead, scrapes, and bruises but escaped major injuries during the men's&nbsp;15km scratch cycling&nbsp;race at the Lee Valley VeloPark in London. Now, India's cyclist Meenakshi was at the receiving end of an awful crash&nbsp;during the women’s 10km scratch race, at the same venue,&nbsp;in&nbsp;Birmingham 2022. The Indian athlete fell from her bike before sliding down the banking on the bend. Adding to her woes, she was run over by a New Zealand&nbsp;rival --&nbsp;Bryony Botha -- who also fell off her bike and injured herself. As a result, both the cyclists were taken out of the race, however,&nbsp;Meenakshi was taken off on a stretcher.

Wilde had been hit by a 10-second penalty, which cost him dear, after leading heading into the 5km run. Yee described his win as "my greatest achievement ever", adding, "It`s the first time I`ve been able to race in front of my parents for a long time at a major Games."

The Commonwealth Games 2022 edition kicked off on Thursday (July 28) with an emphatic opening ceremony event, held in Birmingham. PV Sindhu was India's flagbearer, along with men's hockey team captain Manpreet Singh, as the focus now shifts on the talented and power-packed Indian contingent in the showpiece event.

Given that the Indian team performed exceptionally well in the Tokyo Olympics, held last year, and the Asian giants ended in the third spot in the 2018 edition of the CWG, at Gold Coast, expectations are high from them, despite javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra's absence (ruled out due to groin injury).

The Indian contingent comprises several star athletes such as Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led Indian men's hockey team, Bajrang Punia, Mirabai Chanu, etc. The mega event is a special one for the cricket fans as well as the sport makes its return at the event&nbsp;this time around. For the unversed, cricket was part of the 1998 Games in Kuala Lumpur. Back then, India failed to even enter the semi-finals -- under Ajay Jadeja -- as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand clinched gold, silver and bronze, respectively. This is the first edition where the women's cricket is part of&nbsp;the&nbsp;Quadrennial Games.

The Indian women`s table tennis team started its defence of the title it won four years ago at Gold Coast by outplaying South Africa 3-0 in a Group 2 preliminary round match at Hall 3 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC), Solihull, here on Friday. 
 
The team spearheaded by star paddler Manika Batra did not have to break a sweat as it handed South Africa a comprehensive defeat. Manika won her singles match in straight games against Musfiquh Kalam, Reeth Tennison and Sreeja Akula won the doubles while Sreeja Akula overcame Danisha Patel for a comprehensive 3-0 win for the favourites. 
 
Reeth and Sreeja set the ball rolling for India as they defeated the South African pair of Laitaa Edwards and Danisha Jayavant Patel 11-7, 11-7, 11-5. Reeth and Sreeja took an early lead in each of the three games in the best of five games match and did not allow their lower-ranked opponents many chances. 
 
Manika Batra was at the table for the first singles game and thoroughly outplayed her opponent, Musfiquh Kalam, allowing her to win only 10 points combined in the three games, romping to an 11-5, 11-3, 11-2 win in double quick time. 
 
Sreeja took to the table for the second single and defeated Danisha Patel 3-0 (11-5, 11-3, 11-6) to seal victory for India in the best-of-five match in Group 2 in which Guyana and Fiji are India`s other opponents besides South Africa.

The highest-seeded Indian woman player is the star attraction of the table tennis competition after bagging gold in team and women`s singles competition at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in 2018. However, Manika said she did not feel any pressure of the heightened expectations following her Gold Coast heroics. 
 
`I always go into a tournament thinking that is a new tournament and whatever happened in the previous one has no bearing on this. Pressure will always be there, after all, I am a player. But I try to look ahead and keep my focus,` said Manika after the match. 
 
She said they have a young team as the others are playing in their first Commonwealth Games and she tries to talk to them and share her experiences so that they can learn from that.

The Commonwealth Games 2022 edition is set to get underway on July 29 (Friday) in Birmingham, England. The forthcoming edition has been keenly awaited by many Indian sports fanatics, especially after seeing the Indian contingnent's performance in the last year's Tokyo Olympics.

Team India is a strong squad comprising several star athletes, such as PV Sindhu, Manpreet Singh-led India men's hockey team and Savita Punia's women's hockey line-up, Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Manika Batra, Mirabai Chanu, Lovlina Borgohain, Bajrang Punia, etc.

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.
