Retail conglomerate Future Group, which is currently going through a restructuring phase, has pulled out of BCCI's central sponsorship list for the Indian Premier League.

Future Group has been forced to pull out as the company is reportedly on the verge of a takeover and has suffered losses due to the prevailing hostile economic climate in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Yes, Future Group has pulled out of IPL central sponsorship and that's the reason their logo has been removed from the IPL website. At this point of time, I won't like to elaborate on the development," a BCCI veteran confirmed the development to PTI.

When a Future Group official was contacted, he refused comment but industry insiders confirmed that the pullout was on cards because of the financial health of the company.

"Future Group has been in bad shape since the start of COVID-19. It was bound to happen that they wouldn't have been able to spend Rs 40 crore to be a part of BCCI's central sponsorship pool. Hence, the pull-out is not a surprise," the source said.

"Right now, the Future Group is going through a restructuring phase and there are talks with multi-national conglomerates about its potential takeover in the next few weeks. So sponsoring sporting events at the moment wasn't top priority for Future Group," he added.

It is learnt that education-technology company Unacademy, which lost the IPL title sponsorship bid to fantasy gaming firm Dream11, is in line to become one of the official sponsors along with credit card payment app Cred. As of now, the IPL website shows only four sponsors.

They are Dream11 as title sponsors along with Tata Motors (Altroz), PayTM and Ceat tyres.

The BCCI normally shares half of its central sponsorship kitty with the franchises.

However, with the title sponsorship amount reduced to nearly half (from Rs 440 crore from Vivo to Rs 222 crore of Dream11) and the subsequent pull-outs, the teams are set to get lesser than what they were earning earlier.

"We know it's not an ideal situation but you can't blame BCCI for this. There is a financial crisis. If franchises have earned and made gains during good times, they understand and stand by BCCI during troubled times," a senior official of a franchise said.

COVID-19 Impact: Future Group no longer part of IPL's central pool of sponsorship

There was a massive uproar in the Indian cricket fraternity when Delhi Capitals coach and former Australian captain Ricky Ponting said that he will have a word with veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in relation to ‘Mankad’ mode of dismissal in the upcoming <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> while adding he won’t allow Ashwin to use that form of dismissal in their matches.&nbsp;

While the mode of dismissal falls within the rules, some find it outside the boundary lines of ‘spirit of cricket’. The debate regarding ‘Mankad’ mode of dismissal started when Ravichandran Ashwin decided to run-out non-striker Jos Buttler in IPL 2019 which even led to Jimmy Anderson ripping apart Ashwin’s photograph in a shredder.&nbsp;

Kolkata Knight Riders captain and veteran Indian cricketer Dinesh Karthik has now opined on 'Mankading' as he said even the likes of Don Bradman and Sunil Gavaskar have said it is within the laws. Karthik added that there’s no reason to take the mode of dismissal in a negative way. &nbsp;

“All the way from Don Bradman to Sunil Gavaskar, everyone has said it's completely within the rules. The ICC and MCC have also taken a stand that it is okay. So I don't see the reason why bowlers or any team that does it is looked at in a negative way,” Karthik told CricketNext.&nbsp;

"If Mankad was the first person who did that run out, Bill Brown was the first person who got run out for being silly and walking out of the crease. Dinesh Karthik opines on 'Mankading', says 'giving warning is accepted as spirit of cricket'

A fine all-round bowling display saw Trinbago Knight Riders win the battle of the unbeaten teams and go to the top of the Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table. Glenn Phillips was the only standout for the Jamaica Tallawahs as the power-hitters struggled for fluency, and Sunil Narine’s second consecutive 50 did the bulk of the work even as the Knight Riders took their time about the chase.

Ali Khan and Jayden Seales started superbly after Knight Riders captain Kieron Pollard put the Tallawahs in. Walton spliced Ali Khan to square leg and Kirton was trapped in front by Seales - remarkably, this was the first LBW of Hero CPL 2020.

Glenn Phillips and Tallawahs captain Rovman Powell both hit their first ball for Hero Maximums, but a flamboyant DJ Bravo catch gave Ali Khan the wicket of Powell. Asif Ali coming to the crease in the third over cannot have been part of the Tallawahs’ Plan A.

A mini-recovery ensued as Phillips took Seales for a pair of boundaries, and Asif welcomed Khary Pierre to Hero CPL 2020 with an enormous straight six. Narine bamboozled Asif five balls straight but found himself hammered into the stands for a magnificent Powerplay-closing Hero Maximum.

Narine had his revenge, bowling Asif with a deceptive quicker ball. The Tallawahs crawled to 63/4 at halfway, and it got worse when a Fawad googly completely deceived Brathwaite. The leg-spinner’s first two overs tonight contained a remarkable 11 dot balls.

Phillips broke the spell off Fawad to come out of his post-Powerplay slump and reach 50 off 34 balls. The Tallawahs were careful to see off Narine, but at 90/5 with six overs to come, the acceleration had to come at some point, and once Phillips fell trying to whip Seales over deep square leg the onus was all on Russell.

Ali Khan delivered a near-perfect over, closing by nearly holding a spectacular return catch off a ferocious drive from Ramaal Lewis, who came into the Tallawahs XI for Veerasammy Permaul. In truth the American was lucky to escape with his teeth intact.

Thanks to a fine diving catch at mid-off from Colin Munro, a restless Russell fell having faced a good number of deliveries for under a run a ball for the second game running. Remarkably, he hasn’t yet hit a six in this year’s Hero CPL.

The final over saw Fidel Edwards, into the team for Oshane Thomas for his first Hero CPL game since 2015, run out as he sacrificed himself to save Lewis, but the all-rounder couldn’t manage a boundary. Ali Khan and Dwayne Bravo’s death bowling was outstanding, and the Tallawahs total felt sub-par.

Edwards and Mujeeb-ur-Rahman troubled the top order, with Lendl Simmons losing his shape off the paceman and gifting a catch to mid-off. After 4 overs the Tallawahs had Trinbago nerves jangling, but Narine’s eyes lit up when inexperienced off-spinner Lewis came into the attack. 14 runs came off the over, Munro and Narine both drove Russell for four through cover, and 38/1 off the Powerplay meant things were much calmer in the Knight Riders dugout.

Narine has built his reputation as a hitter of spin, but he was severe on the pace of Russell, with the highlight an impudent inside-out four on one leg. He brought up a 35-ball 50 off the last ball of the 10th over, at which point the Knight Riders needed just 71 off 60 with nine wickets in hand.

Munro’s was a curious innings - he managed just 16 off his first 24 balls, but 14 of them were boundaries, and it wasn’t until the 17th over that he breached a run a ball. This all-or-nothing approach was a feature of the chase, and the Knight Riders will want to address their high dot-ball percentage as they move through the tournament.

Mujeeb was excellent, and deserves huge credit for holding a skied return catch off Darren Bravo despite keeper Phillips nearly taking him out with a full-length dive. But Narine’s belligerence and Munro’s anchor role meant that, although the Tallawahs will rue a few missed opportunities, the Knight Riders always had the chase firmly under control.

This sense of ease was underlined when Pollard had time to block out an Edwards over in an ultimately vain attempt to steer Munro to 50, and the Knight Riders go into the weekend sitting pretty atop the standings.

CPL 2020: Narine stars again as Trinbago rise to the Dre Russ challenge

England captain Joe Root said on Thursday he wants his players to give it their all in the third Test with Pakistan which gets underway this week as it could be their last for a while.

England lead 1-0 and have to avoid defeat at the Ageas Bowl on Friday to seal what would be their first series win over Pakistan in 10 years.

It would make it a perfect summer having beaten the West Indies 2-1 earlier in the season.

England 's next scheduled Test series is in India in the new year but the coronavirus pandemic may make that impossible -- playing it in the United Arab Emirates could be a possibility.

However, Root says the players should perform as if this is the last Test till next summer and "leave no stone unturned." &nbsp;&nbsp;

"My message to the guys today was quite simple really," he said at his eve of match press conference.

"We don't know when the next time is that we'll play Test cricket.

"Let's make sure we leave no stones unturned and we give everything to each other and the badge going into this last game.

"I fully expect everyone to give everything over the next five days and make sure we give ourselves the best chance of finishing the series 2-0."

Root, who missed their only Test defeat of the summer in the first clash with the West Indies due to becoming a father, said even playing without spectators beat what he feared might happen at the beginning of the season.

"We feel extremely lucky to have got the opportunity to play right now," said the 29-year-old.

"At the start of the summer, we were dreading the thought of not seeing any international cricket."

Root paid tribute to both the West Indies and Pakistan for agreeing to tour and having to live in a bubble to reduce the risk of them getting the virus.

"Credit to both touring teams for coming over and giving us that opportunity to play, and to both boards," said Root.

"It's been amazing to be a part of this experience. Hopefully we can have a great finish to it.

"There's been some really exciting games and I think it's made for some entertaining viewing at times."

"During your cricketing career, you sometimes faced setbacks including injuries but every time you overcame those challenges, thanks to your tenacity," he said.

Raina, on his part, thanked the Prime Minister.

In the letter, Modi recollected how much he enjoyed Raina's most famous innings of 34 not out in a tricky run-chase against a formidable Australia in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final at Motera.

"India can never forget your inspiring role during the 2011 World Cup especially during the later matches. I saw you live in action at the Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad, during the Quarter Final against Australia. Your anchoring innings had a big role to play in our team's victory.

"I can confidently say that most fans will miss your elegant cover drives, one which I was lucky to witness that day," said the PM, who was back then the Chief Minister of Gujarat.

The PM also described Raina as the perfect team-man who enjoyed others' successes.

"...Suresh Raina will always be synonymous with team spirit. You played not for personal glory but for the glory of your team and the glory of India.

"Your enthusiasm on the field was infectious and we could all witness that you would be among the first and most animated players to celebrate the fall of opposing team's wicket," the PM wrote.

A bonafide IPL legend, Raina was praised by the Prime Minister for his prowess in the T20 format.

"As a batsman, you especially distinguished yourself across all mediums and particularly in the newest form of the game, the T20 cricket. This is not an easy format.

"In tune with our times, it requires quick fixes in double quick time. Again your promptness and speed were assets for this form," Modi said, lavishing praise on the IPL's most prolific batsman.

His sharp fielding was also acknowledged in the Prime Minister's appreciation letter.

"Your fielding was exemplary and inspiring. Some of the best catches in recent international cricket have your distinctive imprint. It would take days to count the number of runs you saved with your alertness on the field."

The PM also praised Raina for his participation in social initiatives like 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and the cause of women's empowerment.

"I am glad you are attached to India's cultural roots and proud of deepening youth's connect with our glorious ethos as well as value systems," Modi said.

"I am confident you will have an equally fruitful and successful innings in whatever you wish to pursue in times to come."

Jai Hind!🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/l0DIeQSFh5 — Suresh Raina🇮🇳 (@ImRaina) August 21, 2020 × In the letter, Modi recollected how much he enjoyed Raina's most famous innings of 34 not out in a tricky run-chase against a formidable Australia in the 2011 World Cup quarter-final at Motera. It would take days to count the number of runs you saved with your alertness on the field." The PM also praised Raina for his participation in social initiatives like 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' and the cause of women's empowerment. "I am glad you are attached to India's cultural roots and proud of deepening youth's connect with our glorious ethos as well as value systems," Modi said. "I am confident you will have an equally fruitful and successful innings in whatever you wish to pursue in times to come." (With inputs from PTI)

'You are way too young and energetic to retire': PM Modi sends letter of appreciation to Suresh Raina

Zak Crawley struck his maiden Test century after Pakistan saw off England captain Joe Root on the opening day of the series finale at Southampton on Friday.

Crawley, 97 not out at tea, took two down to fine leg off Mohammad Abbas before an offside glide off the paceman saw him to a 171-ball hundred, including 11 fours in what was his eighth Test.

This was just the fourth first-class century of the 22-year-old right-hander's career and it was an especially valuable innings, with no other England batsman having made more than Root's 29 as they reached tea on 184-4.

Yasir Shah had interval figures of 2-60 from 19 overs -- a fine return for a leg-spinner on the first day of a Test.&nbsp;

England, 1-0 up in a three-match contest, need to avoid defeat if they are to win their first series against Pakistan in 10 years.

They suffered an early setback when Rory Burns nicked a full-length ball from fellow left-hander Shaheen Afridi that moved away late, with Shan Masood holding a good low catch at fourth slip.&nbsp;

Burns stood his ground but replays confirmed it was a fair catch and he was out for six, the batsman now averaging a lowly five from four innings in a tough series for openers.

Crawley, fresh from his 53 in the second innings of the drawn and second Test at Southampton, a match marred by bad weather, cut Yasir for four and glanced fast bowler Naseem Shah for another boundary.

But a second-wicket stand worth of 61 ended when Dom Sibley, going down the pitch to Yasir, was given out lbw for 22.

Sibley reviewed but, once again this season, a decision by umpire Michael Gough was upheld, with tracking technology indicating the ball would have hit middle stump.

Crawley brought up an 80-ball fifty off the last ball of the session when, tempted to drive after Pakistan reinforced the slip cordon, he struck Afridi to long-off for a stylish four .

England 91-2 at lunch, lost two wickets early in the second session to be 127-4.

<h2>- Naseem gets Root -</h2>

There was little Root could do on 29 when a full-length delivery from teenage paceman Naseem seamed away late to take the outside edge, with wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan holding a fine diving catch.

Ollie Pope was then once again this series undone by Yasir's quicker delivery when clean bowled for three hanging back in the crease. &nbsp;

But Crawley surpassed his previous Test-best of 76, which he made last month against the West Indies at Southampton.

England made just one change to their second Test team, with fast bowler Jofra Archer replacing Sam Curran.

Left-arm seamer Curran had been brought into the side in place of Ben Stokes, with the star all-rounder missing the last two Tests of the series to be with his ill father in New Zealand.

Pakistan were unchanged for another match being played behind closed doors because of the coronavirus.

While the bubbles can become frustrating when staying indoors for a long time, like in IPL 2020 for around two months, the head of BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit has said it will at least make life difficult for illegal gambling rights to approach players.&nbsp;

Players’ movements will be restricted and heavily monitored as part of strict COVID-19 protocols by the BCCI as they gear up to stay inside bio-secure bubble for the course of the tournament.

“The IPL being held in a bio-secure bubble is going to make a difference because no interaction is allowed with the outsiders,” Ajit Singh, head of the Indian cricket board’s (BCCI) Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) told Reuters.

England vs Pakistan, 3rd Test Live Streaming: When and where to watch ENG vs PAK match?

Keemo Paul and the spinners handsomely repaid Guyana Amazon Warriors’ decision to go with an unchanged XI from their opening day loss, and Shimron Hetmyer’s brilliance meant even a misfiring batting line-up won with time to spare, consigning the St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots to the bottom of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table.

The Patriots started shakily, with Evin Lewis dropped off captain Chris Green by the usually safe Ross Taylor at slip and Chris Lynn dragging a Naveen-ul-Haq slower ball just past his stumps. Imran Tahir’s early introduction paid off first ball, the skipper holding a skier to dismiss Lynn. Tahir again acknowledged Black Lives Matter, dropping the knee and raising the fist.

Lewis started to find his range, sending Tahir over the cover boundary, and taking Naveen’s second over for 18. But smart bowling from Green and even better keeping from Nicholas Pooran saw Lewis stumped for 30 as his back foot lifted for just a moment. The Patriots ended the powerplay at 54/2.

Joshua Da Silva’s exclusion was an eye-opener pre-game, and his replacement Nick Kelly fell early, carving Keemo Paul to point where Shimron Hetmyer held a sharp chance. Paul’s celebration was neatly topical, involving a face mask and strictly enforced social distancing.

Ben Dunk picked up Shepherd over midwicket to break an 18-ball spell without a boundary, but Green put the squeeze right back on. The pressure told, as first Ramdin was strangled down the leg-side off Paul and then Jahmar Hamilton fell to the googly as he did yesterday, Tahir his tormentor tonight.

With his team stuttering at 83/5, Patriots captain Rayad Emrit broke another lengthy boundary-less period, 26 balls this time. But Green finished his spell well, Naveen was equally accurate, and Tahir was unlucky not to finish with Emrit’s wicket. Emrit broke a third long boundary drought, of 22 balls, off Paul, but the latter had his revenge immediately as a hurried pull looped to Taylor at mid-on.&nbsp;

The Amazon Warriors kept Dunk quiet, and when he tried to run a desperate two, Paul and Pooran combined to run him out by a yard. Paul picked up another in the last over with Dominic Drakes, in for the injured Sohail Tanvir, holing out to square leg. Only four boundaries after the Powerplay told the story of the Patriots’ innings.

Early in the chase, Brandon King broke his CPL 2020 duck with a crisp straight drive and rasping square cut. Jon-Russ Jaggesar, in for Alzarri Joseph, asked questions with his left-arm spin but it was Sheldon Cottrell who made the breakthrough - King drilled a cut to cover, and out came the familiar salute. A wicket-maiden was a consolation birthday present for the former JDF man.

Hetmyer showed his class with a flurry of early boundaries, including a Hero Maximum that nearly took out the scoreboard. Chandrapaul Hemraj hit one of his own off Jaggesar, his first boundary of the tournament, and the Amazon Warriors cruised to 54/1 at the end of the Powerplay.

Hemraj failed to realise the danger of a powerful throw from Drakes and was sloppily run out, but by now the chase was well under control. An opportunity to dismiss Hetmyer went begging when sub fielder Kieran Powell failed to hold a powerful drive at cover, and the straight hit for four next ball rubbed salt into the wound.

A Hero Maximum walloped over Ish Sodhi’s head brought up Hetmyer’s second fifty in two games, this one off just 31 balls. A mix-up saw Taylor run out by most of the 22 yards, and Pooran fell to Emrit first ball, but by then the required run rate was well under five an over.

Emrit caused some late nerves with two wickets in two balls, including Pooran for a golden duck, and when Dunk held on inches off the rope to end Hetmyer’s charge, the Patriots entertained thoughts of a burglary. But the Amazon Warriors eventually stumbled over the line, and three overs left told the story far more than three wickets.

Keemo Paul and the spinners handsomely repaid Guyana Amazon Warriors’ decision to go with an unchanged XI from their opening day loss, and Shimron Hetmyer’s brilliance meant even a misfiring batting line-up won with time to spare, consigning the St Kitts & Nevis Patriots to the bottom of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) table.

ALSO READ: IPL 2020: Ponting warns Ashwin he won't have 'Mankading' in Delhi Capitals Early in the chase, Brandon King broke his CPL 2020 duck with a crisp straight drive and rasping square cut. ALSO WATCH: WION Exclusive: Sheldon Cottrell on IPL 2020, Kings XI Punjab and more A Hero Maximum walloped over Ish Sodhi’s head brought up Hetmyer’s second fifty in two games, this one off just 31 balls.

Ricky Ponting has warned Ravichandran Ashwin and the rest of his Delhi Capitals squad he won't tolerate any "Mankad" run-outs during the Indian Premier League.

The Australian great, who will again coach the team in next month's star-studded tournament, said the controversial tactic might be legal, but it was against the spirit of the game.

All-rounder Ashwin sparked controversy and a worldwide debate last year with his "Mankading" of England batsman Jos Buttler when the spinner was captain of Kings XI Punjab.

He has been hired by Delhi Capitals for next month's IPL in the United Arab Emirates, and Ponting said he will be talking to Ashwin as a priority.

"I'll be having a chat to him about that, that'll be the first thing I do," he told the Grade Cricketer podcast on Wednesday.&nbsp;

"It is going to be a hard conversation I'll have to have with him, but I'm pretty sure he'll take it on the chin.

"He will say that it was within the rules and he had his rights to do it, but it's not within the spirit of the game or certainly the way I want the Delhi Capitals to play."

The dismissal was named after India's Vinoo Mankad, who ran out Australia's Bill Brown by removing the bails at the bowler's end during the 1947 Sydney Test.

The mode of dismissal, while legitimate, has been widely considered unsporting.&nbsp;

But opposition to it has been softening recently, particularly in limited-overs cricket, when non-strikers can gain an unfair advantage by leaving the crease early.

Ashwin employed the tactic last year, stopping in his delivery stride to whip off the bails while Rajasthan Royals' Buttler was backing up out of his ground.&nbsp;

"If a bowler was to stop and the batsman was a foot out of his crease for instance, just penalise them some runs or something," Ponting said in suggesting an alternative.

"If the umpires make a stance and do something to actually warn the batsman that they might be cheating, then I think that's better than having an ugly incident like a Mankad."

IPL 2020: Ponting warns Ashwin he won't have 'Mankading' in Delhi Capitals

Pakistan head into Friday's third Test at Southampton facing a first series defeat against England in 10 years.

The tourists are 1-0 down in a three-match campaign after a three-wicket defeat in the first Test at Old Trafford, a match where Pakistan were on top until the closing stages, was followed by a draw in a second Test at Southampton where neither side had a chance of victory in a match blighted by bad weather.

There had been concerns that, as happened to the West Indies' fast bowlers during their 2-1 defeat by England in a preceding behind closed door series that marked international cricket's return from lockdown, Pakistan's quicks would be worn out by three back-to-back Tests.

But the lack of action in the second match --&nbsp;Pakistan had bowled just 43.1 overs in England's first innings when a draw was agreed -- should mean a first-choice pace attack of Shaheen Afridi, Mohammad Abbas and Naseem Shah are all fit and firing for Friday's finale at the Ageas Bowl.

Pakistan coach Misbah-ul-Haq was confident fatigue would not have been an issue in any event, with the former captain, in a blog for the Pakistan Cricket Board's website, writing that "fitness has been an important part of our strategy as a team" since he took charge in September.&nbsp;

Despite little play in the second Test, Misbah was heartened by the determination of Mohammad Rizwan, who top-scored with 72, the resilience of Pakistan's top-order in "testing conditions" and the fact an attack featuring leg-spinner Yasir Shah took four wickets.

<h2>- 'Big game' -</h2>

"The seamers also bowled really well...That last session, even as the game drifted towards a draw, gives us a lot of confidence going into the last Test," Misbah added. "It's a big game and we want to end the series on a good note."

Meanwhile England face another selection dilemma.

There will be a strong temptation to stick with the tried and tested pace trio of James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes, so effective in the kind of overcast English conditions that are likely to be a factor in the third Test as they were in the second.&nbsp;

But with English cricket constantly obsessing about the next Ashes series, a 2021/22 tour of Australia, team management would like to give express fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Mark Wood more Test-match game time before they head 'Down Under'.&nbsp;

"It's very difficult," said England coach Chris Silverwood.

"You look at what you need for the here and now and you look down the line for what we potentially need (in Australia).

"It's a difficult balance to get...There's various factors we look at and pace is one of them: it's pace, movement, bounce, left or right arm...all these things come into account."

Another, immediate, issue is that Friday's match could be played on a used pitch if the weather means the Ageas Bowl ground staff do not have enough time to prepare a fresh surface after the second Test finished on Monday.

The delays in that match, including stoppages for bad light when the floodlights were on full beam, could see the currently rigid 11:00am local (1000 GMT) start time for a Test in England brought forward, as happens in other countries where there is a more flexible approach.

"The earlier start time makes a lot of sense to me," said Silverwood, with both England and Pakistan staying in 'bio-secure' onsite hotels. "What is the harm in starting at 10:30am (0930 GMT)?&nbsp;

"But I've had no official word it'll happen.

"We're all here anyway. We're all on the ground, so it wouldn't be very difficult to make it happen."

Pakistan's 10-year run under threat in final Test

Following positive discussions with the England &amp; Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC), led by Match Referee Chris Broad and various stakeholders including broadcast partners, the ECB and the ICC have agreed to revised start times ahead of the third Test between England and Pakistan starting on Friday at the Ageas Bowl.

The flexible approach will enable the prospect of making up time for inclement weather during the morning session of subsequent days rather than at the end of the day.

The match officials will ensure that light is monitored to maximise playing time while it is still safe to do so. The safety of the players is still the number one priority for this protocol.

The revised start times have been agreed with the captains and coaches of both England and Pakistan and will be implemented for the final match of the ongoing series.

ECB further said consideration will be given to applying these changes further at future series played in England.

<h2>Revised Playing Times Due to Bad Weather</h2>

After the conclusion of play on Day 1, the ICC Match Referee, Groundstaff and the ECB Match Manager will meet to discuss the start times for the next day.

If the forecast looks good in the morning, it will be an option to commence play at 10.30am and that final decision will be made by the ICC Match Referee, Chris Broad.

The Match Referee will confirm the revised playing times, with the most likely scenario of amending to:

<ul>
	<li>10.30am start with 98 overs to be bowled in the day</li>
	<li>6.00pm scheduled close of play</li>
	<li>6.30pm extra 30 mins to bowl overs</li>
	<li>7.00pm cut off for extra time for bad weather during the day</li>
	<li>The morning session would last two and a half hours if the start time was adjusted.</li>
</ul>

The match officials will ensure that light is monitored to maximise playing time while it is still safe to do so. The safety of the players is still the number one priority for the latest protocol.

MS Dhoni shares heartfelt letter penned by PM Narendra Modi after retirement call

Barbados Tridents used every bit of depth they had to start the defence of their Hero Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title with a win over St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots that looked impossible just 15 balls into the match.

Sheldon Cottrell struck with his fourth ball, bowling Johnson Charles as he tried to whip to leg. He pinged Corey Anderson on the head first ball then had him caught at point by Evin Lewis, and when Hope sliced Tanvir to the same fielder the champions were reeling at 8/3 in the third over. Their response was spectacular.

Kyle Mayers took a Tanvir over for 14, and Jason Holder joined in by effortlessly flicking a Hero Maximum over square leg off Alzarri Joseph. Mayers pulled powerfully for two more sixes of his own, and from a hopeless position the Tridents found themselves 51/3 at the end of the GuardianLife Powerplay.

Holder flicked then drove Ish Sodhi for six, bringing up a 50 partnership off just 25 balls. But the game swung back the Patriots’ way once more in the space of two balls.

First Mayers crashed Emrit to deep cover, then Evin Lewis pulled off a direct hit to send back Jonathan Carter. The Tridents had gone from 8/3 to 69/3 to 69/5 as the game continued to move at a breathless pace. Raymon Reifer picked out a lone boundary fielder off Emrit, and Ben Dunk then held a beauty off Sodhi to dismiss the well-set Holder, but here the Tridents’ deep batting lineup came into its own

Ashley Nurse swung Joseph straight to Lynn, but Rashid Khan had jaws hitting floors with an astonishing helicopter flick for six. Santner fell timing a ball sweetly but straight to the fielder to leave Rashid batting with the capable Hayden Walsh Jr at no.11.

Tanvir and Cottrell were just as impressive at the death as at the top, going for just seven off their combined fourth overs, but Rashid showed his power and craft to plunder a couple of late boundaries to drag the Tridents over 150.

Walsh Jr let Lewis off the hook on zero, dropping a simple chance at point. But Santner kept things tight with the first maiden of Hero CPL 2020, Holder kept the pressure on, and that pressure told as Lynn carved Santner to Walsh Jr who held on this time.

With Lewis struggling, the Patriots crawled to 33/1 off the Powerplay. Rashid’s first ball was loose and Lewis crashed it for four, but the Afghan showed yet another facet of his game to run out the dangerous Trinidadian. Joshua da Silva, promoted to three on T20 debut, crashed a drive into the bowlers’ wicket, and Rashid reacted first to knock out the remaining stumps and catch Lewis short.

Dunk powered Nurse and Walsh Jr for a boundary each to keep things moving, then sent Reifer to the fence and then over it for the Patriots’ first Hero Maximum, leaving the Patriots 81/2 at the Angostura LLB drinks breaks.

Da Silva picked up a few boundaries off Rashid but struggled to score above a run a ball. Then Santner returned in style - Dunk went for power but toe-ended to Mayers at long-on. Holder kept his bowlers going in one-over spells, never allowing Da Silva and new Patriots signing Denesh Ramdin to settle.

Nurse almost pulled off an unbelievable catch in Santner’s last over, but Rashid was not to be denied. Walsh Jr came up with a true Republic Bank Classic Catch at deep midwicket to send Ramdin packing and the googly next ball was too good for Jahmar Hamilton. He couldn’t pick up a second Hero CPL hat-trick, but the damage was done.

Da Silva kept swinging but found no timing or placement, and though Tanvir demonstrated his power with a pull for four off Reifer, even with a no-ball, a free-hit and a monster six onto the bank from Tanvir, Mayers had enough to defend off the last over. With only five wickets down, and from the start they made with the ball, the Patriots will be wondering how they let this one get away.

Holder flicked then drove Ish Sodhi for six, bringing up a 50 partnership off just 25 balls. But the game swung back the Patriots’ way once more in the space of two balls. ALSO READ: Exclusive - Salutes, Kings XI Punjab and IPL dream with Sheldon Cottrell First Mayers crashed Emrit to deep cover, then Evin Lewis pulled off a direct hit to send back Jonathan Carter. The Tridents had gone from 8/3 to 69/3 to 69/5 as the game continued to move at a breathless pace. Raymon Reifer picked out a lone boundary fielder off Emrit, and Ben Dunk then held a beauty off Sodhi to dismiss the well-set Holder, but here the Tridents’ deep batting lineup came into its own Ashley Nurse swung Joseph straight to Lynn, but Rashid Khan had jaws hitting floors with an astonishing helicopter flick for six.

Former South African captain Graeme Smith, who is also the director of cricket of Cricket South Africa, has said that he along with others have been subjected to massive amount of abuse and death threats for supporting the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement.&nbsp;

The BLM movement gained worldwide pace after an African-American George Flyod was killed by a white police officer who knelt on his neck in Minneapolis, USA. Is has found support from some of the top athletes and sporting organizations in the world. Cricket players from the West Indies and South Africa, too, have been vocal about the movement which seeks to end racial discrimination or anything sort of racism.&nbsp;

Smith had supported Lungi Ngidi and even took a knee in widely-watched 3TC Solidarity Cup.&nbsp;

"It's been a really challenging experience. All of us have found ourselves in a really heated space. We've taken an immense amount of abuse, death threats. It's been an eye-opening experience. It has shocked me how heated things have got.

BCCI announces Dream11 as title sponsor for IPL 2020

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is eager to host a farewell match for former captain MS Dhoni, who announced his retirement from international cricket, on August 15, 2020. A senior BCCI official has said that the board will have a word with Dhoni, during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 and chalk out plans accordingly.

According to reports, with no international series right now, Dhoni’s farewell match could come after the IPL with the official stating that he has done a lot for the nation and deserves all the respect while adding that Dhoni announced his retirement when nobody was even thinking of it.

However, the BCCI official clarified that the farewell match will depend on Dhoni’s opinion and what he wants but added that there will be proper felicitation ceremony for the two-time World Cup winner captain regardless of whether he agrees or not.

Even Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemand Soren had also asked for a farewell match for Dhoni while appealing to the BCCI by saying that Jharkhand would host the final match of Dhoni.&nbsp;

Barbados Tridents started their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020 campaign with a victory over St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots as they won the match by six runs in what was a proper humdinger at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad.

A jaw-dropping Rashid Khan helicopter flick stole the limelight as the Afghanistan spinner smoked 26 not-out off 20 to help Barbados Tridents reach a competitive score of 153-9. Rashid scored just one six in the match but that was arguably the shot of the match and a contender for the shot of the tournament.&nbsp;

It was a juicy half-volley by St Kitts &amp; Nevis Patriots speedster Alzarri Joseph in around the off-stump but Rashid shuffled a bit to send the helicopter flick over the square-leg boundary to leave everyone watching in awe. The commentators couldn’t believe what they saw as the Afghanistan cricketer enjoyed a prolific outing with the willow before wreaking havoc with the ball.&nbsp;

Rashid went on to pick up a couple of wickets in his four-over quota while giving away just 27 runs as he continued to cement his legacy as the most valuable player in the T20 arena.

Captain Jason Holder was all praise for Rashid and Hayden who built a solid partnership for the last wicket to pile up some crucial runs for the Barbados Tridents in CPL 2020.

“It was important to win this game. It is important to start the tournament well. We were five down before 10 overs and every time we tried to get momentum, we lost a wicket. The partnership between Rashid and Hayden was outstanding to get us to a competitive total. It was a bit easier for the seamers but we had quality spinners in Santner and Rashid. The bowlers have been the beauty to our success and it is good to see they have continued from last year. Our batting could have been a lot better. The top three didn't contribute much but we still managed to get 150,” Barbados Tridents skipper Jason Holder said in the post-match presentation.

South African speedster Anrich Nortje has been roped in by Delhi Capitals to replace England’s Chris Woakes in the upcoming <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a>, scheduled to be held in the UAE from September 19 to November 10.

English all-rounder, Woakes had pulled out of the cash-rich T20 tournament in March due to family commitments after being signed up by the Delhi franchise for $200,000 in the auctions, held in December 2019.

However, after much wait, DC has signed in Nortje who will join fellow South African pacer Kagiso Rabada in the squad for the 13th edition of IPL, the franchise announced on Tuesday.&nbsp;

An <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl?page=1">Indian Premier League</a> cricket team has signed a sponsorship deal with a sanitary pad brand, challenging the country's entrenched taboos around menstruation.

The Rajasthan Royals, who feature England stars Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, said they hoped the Niine brand sponsorship will "help educate men... on a grand scale".

Deep-rooted social taboos remain in India around menstruating women. In some rural areas, women are made to sleep separately during periods and are banned from entering temples.

The Niine logo will be on the back of the player jerseys for the tournament, which this year is being held in the United Arab Emirates because of the coronavirus pandemic, starting September 19.

"Cricket undoubtedly is the most watched sport in the country and provides the perfect platform to address health and drive social change," the Royals said in a statement.

"Rajasthan Royals are poised to be the vehicle that will help educate men through the IPL 2020 season by building not only awareness but also understanding on a grand scale," the statement added.

A Royals spokesperson declined to give financial details of the deal when approached by AFP.

Breaking taboo, IPL's Rajasthan Royals get sanitary pad sponsor

Pakistan bowling coach Waqar Younis said he wanted to see teams "staying out there a bit longer" after bad light blighted the second Test against England at Southampton.

Monday saw a match where a draw had long appeared an inevitable end with England still in their first innings at 110-4 as they replied to Pakistan's 236.

Only 134.3 overs were bowled in total, with the whole of Saturday's third day washed out.

But while there is an understanding rain can delay play, many pundits were scathing about the repeated stoppages for bad light at a ground where the floodlights were in use.

While some observers suggested a pink ball, as happens in day/night Tests, could be used to aid greater visibility, fast-bowling great Waqar suggested greater flexibilty from the match officials was the best way of maximising playing time. &nbsp;

"I feel unless light gets really bad, we can stay out there a bit longer," said Waqar.

"But I'm generally in favour of changing as little in Test cricket as possible," he added after a result that left Pakistan still 1-0 down in a three-match series ahead of the third Test, also at Southampton, starting Friday.

"It's the oldest and most traditional format. What we need to be careful of is which kind of cricket ball is used."

Waqar added: "I don't yet know how a Dukes pink ball is going to behave in this country. If conditions are overcast and the lights are on, maybe it'll do too much. It can work, but we'd need further trials in England."

<h2>- 'Do as we're told' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Meanwhile England captain Joe Root, although sympathetic to the position on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Michael Gough found themselves in at the Ageas Bowl, said changes must be made "somewhere, somehow" to help prevent future Tests being so disrupted by bad light.

"I think it's hard to blame the umpires here," said Root, with the officials in the firing line after calling off play on Sunday shortly before 1500 GMT.&nbsp;

"There's something bigger that needs looking at higher up the chain," he added. "I think it needs to be addressed somewhere, somehow.

"I don't think I've ever seen a game be affected by bad light as much as this. I'm not exactly sure what the answers are to be honest.

"But until those things change from the ICC (International Cricket Council), the umpires have to follow the rules in front of them and as players we have to do as we are told."

Root insisted his side "don't want to be sat watching, we want to be involved in exciting Test cricket and make an impact on the world stage".

But he added: "If you're facing someone really quick it can feel a bit more dangerous -- in the field, square of the wicket is where you feel most vulnerable.&nbsp;

"Similarly the umpires might feel in danger if someone crunches a pull shot or hits one straight back at them.

"They've also got to be able to see and make the right decisions on the field."

England announce squad for T20I series versus Pakistan

IPL Governing Council Chairman Brijesh Patel on Tuesday announced that fantasy gaming platform Dream11 has been awarded the title sponsorship for the much-talked-about Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 scheduled to be held in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) from September 19 to November 10.

While the announcement came as a sigh of relief for cricket lovers who are eagerly waiting for all backroom developments to be concluded as soon as possible so that the lucrative and arguably the best T20 tournament in the world can go ahead, the Chinese-backed Dream11 being handed the title sponsorship for IPL 2020 wasn’t digested well over social media platforms.&nbsp;

Dream11 bagged the title sponsorship deal with a whopping INR 222 crore (around $30 million) bid racing ahead of others in contention. While the Tata group didn’t place a final bid, two edu-tech companies, BYJU's and Unacademy,&nbsp;in the race came second and third. The deal with Dream11 also sees the BCCI take almost 50 per cent financial hit given that the deal with Chinese mobile manufacturing giants Vivo fetched them INR 440 crore ($66m) a year.&nbsp;

With anti-China sentiments running high in India following the border skirmish between the two countries at Galwan valley 20 Army personnel were killed in a faceoff in what was the biggest confrontation between the two militaries after their 1967 clashes in Nathu La, the BCCI said it will review IPL's sponsorship deals, including the one with Chinese mobile manufacturing company Vivo. The meeting never happened but months later Vivo and the BCCI mutually agreed to pause the deal for a year. The development was well received by everyone in India.&nbsp;

However, IPL 2020’s title sponsor – Dream11 – has Chinese investment in the company by Tencent - the world's largest video game company, one of the world's most financially valuable companies. On Dream11 investors' section on their website, the company lists four organizations. Steadview - a leading India-focused investment firm, Tencent - which claims to use technology to enrich lives of internet users and is founded in Shenzen, China in 1998, Multiples - an India-focused investment advisory firm that managers Private Equity Funds and Think Investments - an investment fund headquartered in San Francisco. The only questionable investor in India’s point of view is Tencent, which is also behind massively popular video game – PUBG.&nbsp;

<img alt="Dream11 " data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="843a4052-5ef4-4557-b4e0-ac0c0ae4525e" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Efs4mgBVAAEbfxO.jpg" />

However, a BCCI source told PTI that Tencent holds less than 10 per cent in Dream11, which is an Indian company founded by Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth.&nbsp;

"Dream11 stakeholders, including its founders plus all 400 plus employees, are Indian," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI.&nbsp;

"Their Indian investors are Kalaari Capital and Multiples Equity. Even Dream11's product is available exclusively for use only by Indians. Only a single-digit percentage minority stake is held by Tencent," the official added.

But it was earlier reported by many media portals that Tencent holds a majority stake in Dream11. Tencent had invested over $100 million in the Indian gaming unicorn in 2018 and naturally would be looking for profits, which they may have well received given Dream11’s stunning rise in recent years.

<img alt="Dream11 " data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="fef9d59e-0f3d-462a-b14e-5592b3a8ac59" src="//cdn.wionews.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/Efsb9paU4AAyKp4.jpg" />

Not only that, Dream11 fell into trouble in July, 2020 when the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had sought an inquiry against the company when the platform had links to a fake T20 league which was held in Punjab but was live-streamed as a match in Sri Lanka.&nbsp;

The ACU investigations cleared that kits used by the teams in the tournament had Dream11 logo and the matches were live-streamed on FanCode – another part of Dream Sports Group.

But the question remains, does bringing Dream11 solves the issue of providing exposure to Chinese companies? Was the Vivo deal pullout all about anti-China sentiments in India?&nbsp;

Many claim that Vivo deal was put on hold as the mobile manufacturing company was unwilling to shell out INR 440 crore for a year amid COVID-19 pandemic and obviously, the social media backlash didn’t help the cause either. While Dream11 is not an out and out Chinese company unlike Vivo, the profits company will be bagging with the deal, a part of it, in all probability, will reach Tencent.&nbsp;

"As a well-wisher of Indian sports, I wish and pray that IPL 13 is held successfully in the UAE. However, with Dream11 becoming the title sponsor of IPL, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's dream of 'Atma Nirbhar Bharat' will be a bit shattered as Dream11 is a Chinese company. It has also come to fore that the company has a huge investment in one of the IPL franchises," Secretary of Cricket Association of Bihar (CAB) Aditya Verma was quoted as saying by IANS.

Dream11 now doesn’t only hold the title sponsorship rights but is also partners with seven IPL teams -Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.&nbsp;

Keeping aside other sports, Dream11 has exclusively managed the Official Fantasy Game of VIVO IPL since 2019. It has also acquired Official Partner rights of BCCI’s international and domestic matches since 2019.

With IPL 2020 expected to break all the TV records, the exposure and profit Dream11’s investors would be getting is unprecedented. Still, the question remains, does Dream11 bagging IPL 2020 title sponsorship put the main issue to bed? Perhaps, no.

The only questionable investor in India’s point of view is Tencent, which is also behind massively popular video game – PUBG. However, a BCCI source told PTI that Tencent holds less than 10 per cent in Dream11, which is an Indian company founded by Harsh Jain and Bhavit Sheth. "Dream11 stakeholders, including its founders plus all 400 plus employees, are Indian," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by PTI. Not only that, Dream11 fell into trouble in July, 2020 when the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption Unit (ACU) had sought an inquiry against the company when the platform had links to a fake T20 league which was held in Punjab but was live-streamed as a match in Sri Lanka. The ACU investigations cleared that kits used by the teams in the tournament had Dream11 logo and the matches were live-streamed on FanCode – another part of Dream Sports Group. But the question remains, does bringing Dream11 solves the issue of providing exposure to Chinese companies? Was the Vivo deal pullout all about anti-China sentiments in India? Many claim that Vivo deal was put on hold as the mobile manufacturing company was unwilling to shell out INR 440 crore for a year amid COVID-19 pandemic and obviously, the social media backlash didn’t help the cause either. While Dream11 is not an out and out Chinese company unlike Vivo, the profits company will be bagging with the deal, a part of it, in all probability, will reach Tencent. Dream11 now doesn’t only hold the title sponsorship rights but is also partners with seven IPL teams -Mumbai Indians, Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab.

IPL 2020: Dream11, Tencent and Chinese connection

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to award the title sponsorship rights of the lucrative <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/ipl">Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020</a> to Dream11. Already a sponsor for the BCCI, Dream11 raced ahead of heavy favourites Tata Sons and edu-tech company Unacademy and BYJU’s.

Dream11 bagged the title sponsorship of IPL 2020 due to their financial bid despite the BCCI saying that money won’t be the only factor in the bidding process. Apparently, Dream11 submitted a bid of INR 222&nbsp;crore with Unacademy following close with INR 170 crore bid. Tatas and Byju’s had submitted a bit of INR 180 and 170 crore respectively.

"Fantasy sports platform Dream11 wins IPL title sponsorship rights with a bid of Rs 222 crore,"&nbsp;IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel&nbsp;told PTI.

The title sponsor of IPL 2020 was left vacant after Vivo – a Chinese mobile manufacturing giant, withdrew for the year following Boycott China trend in the wake of India-China standoff at the Galwan Valley in Ladakh in June. Vivo, which signed a deal of 2000-crore plus deal for a five-year tenure (2018-2022), is a fully funded by a Chinese company.

Australian captain Aaron Finch has expressed his concerns surrounding the mental health of cricketers as they would be playing all the upcoming series and tournaments while staying confined to bio-secure bubble amid COVID-19 pandemic. While raising his concerns, Finch said that the mental health of players will be tested over the next two years with the Australian staff working hard to prepare players for the challenges.&nbsp;

Finch will lead a 21-man squad for the England tour consisting three T20Is and as many ODIs starting September 4. While the T20Is will be played in Southampton, the ODI series is set to be hosted by Manchester.&nbsp;

Along with Finch, some of the high profile names in the Australian squad will head to the United Arab Emirates for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 before returning to Australia in a bid to prepare for India’s tour.

However, players movement will be heavily restricted to curb the spread of COVID-19 and that could take a toll on the mental well-being of players.&nbsp;

“I definitely feel it’s going to be a real issue and a real factor over the next couple of years, in particular,” Finch told reporters in a video call.

“It’s going to be something to monitor heavily. Because it could be a few months that guys are in these bio-bubbles and being stuck in a hotel room by yourself for a couple of weeks on end - or four-five months ... that could be really tough.”

Caribbean Premier League: Full schedule, timings and venues of CPL 2020

Imperfection has its own charm as Chetan Chauhan would say about that elusive Test hundred which he so richly deserved but had no regrets missing.

Chetendra Pratap Singh Chauhan, who breathed his last at 73 on Sunday after battling COVID-19, was a very secure man and probably someone whose biggest strength was knowing about limitations, something that he believed helped him as an administrator and politician later in life.

When asked how he felt getting out nine times between 80 and 97, he would laugh playfully with a cup of tea in his hands watching another one of Delhi's Ranji Trophy games at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

"It was destiny probably but I have seen people being more disappointed about that hundred than me. I have no regrets. I have played 40 Tests for India and was Sunil Gavaskar's opening partner," he would say proudly.

For a generation that didn't watch Chauhan, he was one of the first Indian international cricketers to wear a helmet which he believed helped his game.

A strong back-foot player, who could ride the bounce, Chauhan's finest phase was between 1977 to 1981 when he was a regular with Gavaskar at the top of the order.

Yet the most endearing memory for all YouTubers will be how Gavaskar called him to leave the ground in Melbourne after being unhappy with Dennis Lillee's boorish behaviour during India's famous victory.

Was Gavaskar out or not out sir? Journalists would often ask him and he would start laughing.

But during numerous interactions with him, what stood out was his reverence for his opening partner and his greatness.

"Sunny bahot bada batsman thaa. Tum bacchon ko koi idea nahi hain. Humse pucho. 2000 run karne mein kitne Ghode kholne pade aur uske 10 hazar run the (Sunny was a big player. Imagine how difficult it was for us to score even 2000 and he scored 10,000)," said the man, who held his own against Bob Willis, Mike Hendricks and Ian Botham at the Oval in 1979, was fantastic against Lillee, Len Pascoe and Rodney Hogg on bouncy Australian tracks.

He never believed in beating around the bush when he spoke about Indian cricket or for that matter Delhi cricket. The journalists, who covered Delhi cricket, loved him.

Not because he was available for a comment on any cricketing issue but the amazing stories he would tell.

"Bahot bekaar players bhi 70s aur 80s mein khel gayein hain India ke liye," he once said standing at Roshanara ground.

He gave a list and then said I hope no one is recording anything. "Tum sab apne bache ho," he would say smilingly.
Chauhan sir, as he was called, could be incredibly funny without even trying.

Sample this. One journalist once asked him, "Sir, who is the worst first-class cricketer to have played Ranji Trophy in the last 50 years?"

There was a wide grin and then came the clincher. "Bataoonga par kahin pe quote toh nahi karogey na?" Everyone promised and he spelt out a name, a very well known administrator in later years.

But Chauhan wasn't just fun. He was a serious man who handled cricket in the most difficult and arguably the most corrupt state body under the aegis of BCCI -- Delhi and Districts Cricket Association (DDCA).

And he had a bunch of superstars to handle. Once Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were done with their India days, it wasn't an easy job to handle the two stars but Chauhan managed that with elan.

There would be times when his contemporaries from Indian and Delhi cricket would rip him to shreds on DDCA matters but hardly would he lose his cool.

Politics and time spent in Parliament as an MP made him patient and at one level thick-skinned which is necessary for administration.

He had issue based public difference of opinion with Gambhir on Navdeep Saini's selection in the Delhi team and both were correct. Chauhan went by the book, Gambhir by emotions.

Then once he was made chairman of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, a political appointment that drew criticism and in one of the fashion pages, he was ridiculed using a picture of him in a cowboy hat and captioned "Shikari Shambhoo".

The next day he wasn't angry but tried to explain that his post is not about knowing fashion but clearing cheques and putting administration in order.

"Kya bolun, they don't even understand," he said.

The lasting picture of Chauhan would him clad in a track suit at 8:30 am on any chilly December morning, walking down to the pitch, talking to groundsmen, walking a few more laps, going the gym, spending an hour, before changing into formals to watch the match.

Kotla will miss Chetan Chauhan.

Chetan Chauhan: Guts and Grit and that elusive hundred

Mahendra Singh Dhoni is arguably the greatest white-ball skipper in the history of the game, former England captains Michael Vaughan and Nasser Hussain said in a tribute to the Indian who quit international cricket on Saturday.

Known for his unflappable demeanour, ‘Captain Cool’ Dhoni led India to World Cup titles in 2007 (Twenty20) and 2011 (ODI), besides overseeing their 2013 Champions Trophy triumph.

India also became the top-ranked test team under Dhoni, who ended an illustrious, trophy-laden career with an Instagram message.

“What an incredible international career. You could argue the greatest ever white ball captain &amp; finisher,” tweeted Vaughan.

Hussain also praised Dhoni’s ability to finish a game in style, best illustrated in the final of the 2011 World Cup when Dhoni sealed India’s victory with a six.

“A great captain, probably the best white-ball captain there has ever been,” Hussain told Sky Sports.

“And also a cool, calm customer under pressure; a great finisher of a game, the game wasn’t won until you got Dhoni out.”

Dhoni aggregated 17,000 international runs across formats and claimed more than 800 victims as wicketkeeper.

Spin great Shane Warne was another admirer of Dhoni’s phlegmatic brand of leadership.

“He had a calmness about him that was fantastic and he always got the best out of his team...” Warne told Sky Sports.

“His players really respected him and responded to the way Dhoni wanted to play the game.”

Warne also extended a public invitation to Dhoni to play next year in The Hundred, English cricket’s new short-form competition, where he has taken on the role as head coach for the London Spirit.

“I just wonder if I could get him down to the London Spirit next year for The Hundred,” Warne said.

“I might put out a call to see if he wants to play at Lord’s. I’ll find the money, MS!”

Dhoni arguably greatest white-ball captain, say Vaughan and Hussain

The crestfallen look on Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s face was beamed across the subcontinent as the then 23-year-old — his silky black mane cascading on his broad shoulders — appeared gutted after a nightmarish international debut in 2004.

Dhoni had fallen for a first ball duck in Chittagong, and in the cruellest of manner — run out.

For much of the next decade-and-half, Dhoni subjected rivals to such agonies — from behind the stumps, with the bat, and as a shrewd captain of a highly successful team.

Three and half months after that forgettable debut, Dhoni announced his arrival with a breath-taking 148 off 123 balls against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam.

He wielded the willow like a mace and his batting was less technique and more pyrotechnic.

He did not have the steely defence of a Rahul Dravid or the silken touch of a VVS Laxman but Dhoni made up with his muscular ingenuity.

He converted the yorker into a scoring opportunity with his trademark ‘helicopter shot’, a culmination of violent convulsions involving his arm, wrists and torso.

Dhoni wrote his own keeping manual too, barely moving hands sideways before gathering the ball and rather thrusting them down to pull off electric stumpings.

His biggest legacy, however, would be as India’s ‘Captain Cool’ who was also one of one-day cricket’s greatest finishers.

Dhoni is the only captain to win all ICC trophies — T20 World Cup in 2007, 50-overs World Cup in 2011 and Champions Trophy in 2013. Under him, India also became the top ranked test nation in 2009.

And he led a cricket-mad nation of 1.3 billion with ice in his veins.

“It’s almost as if he doesn’t have them; a performance-enhancing gift from birth,” India’s former mental conditioning coach Paddy Upton wrote about Dhoni’s control over emotion in his memoir.

<h3>INSPIRING DECISION</h3>

Dhoni’s penchant for taking inspiring decisions was best illustrated in the tense final of the 2007 World Cup, when he famously asked an unheralded Joginder Sharma to bowl the final over in a tactical masterstroke against Pakistan.

He also transformed himself into a formidable ‘finisher’, securing India’s 2011 World Cup victory by hitting a six in the final against Sri Lanka.

Age, however, appeared to catch up with him in the World Cup in England last year.

He struggled to time the ball even against mediocre attacks and failed to provide the late assault that he once routinely delivered.

Those wild, flowing tresses that was once a rage among the youths in rural India, have now been replaced by greying sideburns.

An enigma throughout his career, Dhoni quit test cricket in the middle of India’s 2014 series in Australia.

On Saturday, he again shocked an unsuspecting nation, announcing his exit from international cricket with a cryptic Instagram message.

His fairytale rise from India’s cricketing backwaters of Jharkhand sounds like a storyline straight out of a Bollywood script. In reality, it’s the other way round.

Known for his fondness for bikes and military fatigue, Dhoni’s stellar career inspired a 2016 biopic “M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story” which was a roaring box office success.

Such has been his influence that successor Virat Kohli still considers Dhoni his captain.

“The world has seen achievements, I’ve seen the person. Thanks for everything skip. I tip my hat to you,” Kohli said on Twitter on Saturday.
