Batsman Devon Conway, who was picked in the New Zealand T20I squad that plays West Indies later this month but ignored from the Test squad despite a stellar season in which he scored 410 first-class runs at 58.57, says he will wait for his opportunities and make the most of what he has got.

"Just getting an opportunity in the T20 squad is pretty special right now. We do not want to push things too soon. I have still got to earn the right to get that Test callup and if it maybe happens in the future we will see how it goes," the 29-year-old was quoted as saying by stuff.co.nz

The left-handed batsman, who made 157 in his last first-class game for Wellington against Auckland, was elated and said that the news hadn`t sunk in as yet.

"It will probably take a couple of days for it to settle in. It is a great honour; [Larsen] cornered me during the game and sat me down and said `congratulations, you have been selected in the T20 squad`," he said.

"I did not really know what to say. It took me a couple of seconds to digest it, and we are here today and it is pretty exciting."

Australia virus cluster raises question marks over India cricket tour

Australian vice-captain Pat Cummins has said that Virat Kohli’s absence after the first Test match in Adelaide “make a bit of difference” but he was “unsure” if it could be the deciding factor in the much-awaited Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Kohli is set to miss the last three Tests of the four-match series after being granted paternity leave by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Kohli’s wife and Bollywood star Anushka Sharma are expecting their first child in early January.

Cummins, echoing his team-mate Nathan Lyon’s views, said that the players haven’t spoken about Kohli’s absence too much while adding he is not sure that it will be a deciding factor in the series.

Former Pakistan speedster Aaqib Javed recalls his match days against Sachin Tendulkar in an exclusive conversation with the fans during GloFans Q20 fan series. The former Pakistan Cricketer hailed Sachin Tendulkar as the most impactful cricketer of his era.

Recalling his encounters with the Little Master, Aaqib Javed said that Sachin rightfully ruled the game in his era.
Significantly, it has been 31 years since Sachin had started his iconic journey in international cricket as a 16-year-old against the lethal pace attack.

Aaqib also reckoned that Sachin has been quite successful in leaving an impact on the game by the virtue of the talent he possessed. As part of GloFans Q20 special fan series, Aaqib Javed answered exclusive questions framed by the fans.

Aaqib, who featured in 22 Tests and 163 ODIs for his country, in a freewheeling chat with GloFans Q20, expressed: “Sachin created 100 per cent impact on the game with the quality or talent he had. He held the numero uno spot in the game for several years as he was a seasoned cricketer.”

Answering to yet another question by a fan on 7/37 in 1991 and how fans hated Javed during that, Aaqib said that “lack of technology gave a lot of power to the Umpire at that time and whatever the Umpire said, was considered as the final decision”.

Aaqib, 48, served the Green Brigade for a period of nine years. In first-class cricket, the former right-arm pacer scalped 358 wickets from 121 games. However, he hogged the limelight after returning with exceptional figures of 7/37 in an ODI game, that too, against arch-rivals India in 1991. In the process, Aaqib had also claimed a hat-trick after he packed back Ravi Shastri, Mohammad Azharuddin and Sachin, who all were trapped before the stumps.

The Men in Blue were at the receiving end in the contest, losing the summit clash of the triangular Wills Trophy by a mammoth 72-run margin in Sharjah. Notably, four of his six ODI ‘Man of the Match’ awards were also against India.

The Australian cricket team is set to form a “barefoot circle” during the upcoming series against India to express their opposition to racism and celebrate Aboriginal culture. Australian vice-captain Pat Cummins announced the move on Monday as he said the decision came after talks within the team.

Earlier during Australia’s tour of England in September, former West Indies Michael Holding had criticized Australian team for not taking a knee.

The practice of “barefoot circle” on the pitch before a series was introduced by the Australian women’s team earlier in 2020 at the urging of all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner, who has Aboriginal heritage.

Cummins revealed that the men’s team would do the same during the India tour, which gets underway on November 27 while making it a regular pre-match ritual at the start of a series.

"We think it's really important to do our bit and we've decided to do the barefoot circle," he told reporters in a conference call.

"Not only as a sport, but we as people are absolutely against racism.

"I think we could probably put our hands up and say we haven't done enough in the past and we want to get better, so this is one small thing we're going to introduce this summer."

Taking a knee on the ground was popularized by former American NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who first took a knee in 2016 to express his displeasure against police brutality against black people and other minorities.

"In Australia, we think the most marginalised group is the First Nations people, the indigenous people," he said.

"We think the barefoot circle is a great way to celebrate them. Some people might want to take the knee and show it (support) in different ways, we're absolutely all for that."

Whereas Australian coach Justin Langer was left aback by Holding’s criticism and said that his team wanted to send a "sustained and powerful" message against racism.

TRENDING: WATCH- 'Kangaroo land!': Ajinkya Rahane faces Ashwin and Jadeja in nets "We think it's really important to do our bit and we've decided to do the barefoot circle," he told reporters in a conference call. "Not only as a sport, but we as people are absolutely against racism. "I think we could probably put our hands up and say we haven't done enough in the past and we want to get better, so this is one small thing we're going to introduce this summer." Taking a knee on the ground was popularized by former American NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who first took a knee in 2016 to express his displeasure against police brutality against black people and other minorities. "We think the barefoot circle is a great way to celebrate them. Some people might want to take the knee and show it (support) in different ways, we're absolutely all for that." Whereas Australian coach Justin Langer was left aback by Holding’s criticism and said that his team wanted to send a "sustained and powerful" message against racism.

Virat Kohli's absence in three Tests doesn't make Australia favourites: Nathan Lyon

Rohit Sharma played the last three matches of Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 as he led the Mumbai outfit to their fifth IPL trophy. As Rohit took the field for MI’s matches in IPL 2020 in the latter half of the tournament, confusion grew over his fitness as the Indian selectors hadn’t name Rohit in the limited-overs squad for the series against Australia.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has now said that Rohit Sharma is still only 70 per cent fit while clarifying this is the reason why he is not picked for the ODI and T20I series against Australia. After much deliberation, Rohit was recently added to the Indian Test squad.

"Rohit is still 70 per cent [fit]," Ganguly said in an interview with The Week when asked about Rohit. "Why don't you find out from Rohit himself? That is why he is still not picked for the ODIs and T20s down under. He has been added to the Test squad."
Rohit had suffered a hamstring tear in his left leg on October 18 and went on to miss Mumbai Indians’ next four matches. However, he came back in the last three and helped the Mumbai outfit lift their fifth IPL trophy.

It is likely that Rohit would undergo rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru before joining the Indian squad in Australia for the four-match Test series, starting December 17. He still has to pass a fitness test and hasn’t travelled with the Indian squad to Australia.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to roll out a tender for two more teams in the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Diwali. The franchises have raised a few questions related to next players’ auction with some worried about the quality of squads if 10 teams will play IPL 2021 in place of usual 8 teams.

Many franchises have struggled to maintain quality in the squad given that only four overseas players can be named in the playing XI while having a total of 8 overseas players in the roster. According to reports, the cause of concerns for franchises is that the quality of the pool of Indian players would decrease massively if 10 teams are playing in IPL 2021.

"Teams are already finding it difficult to ensure quality. If we look at most IPL squads, around seven to nine players form the core while two to three players per squad are rotated to find the right balance. Now, if eight franchises are increased to 10, that quality further gets diluted. IPL's core - the very essence of having a salary purse every year - is to ensure the overall quality of all eight franchises remains somewhere at the same level, regardless of an individual franchise's spending capacity. If two extra teams draw from the same pool of cricketers at the auction, can the quality be guaranteed," existing franchises asked as per the Times of India.

A top BCCI official has suggested that the participating overseas players per playing XI should be increased to 5 from 4 as the official said it could solve the problem of quality.

"There are quality overseas players who are warming the bench every season because of the restriction. An added overseas player will balance out that need," the official is said to have suggested.

With IPL being known as a platform where talent meets opportunity, and a stage where lesser-known Indian domestic talents are unearthed, it is going to be interesting to see whether the BCCI and IPL Governing Council approves or even discuss such proposals.

According to Telegraph, the hotel authorities will provide Kohli with special penthouse suite where Australian rugby legend Brad Fittler generally puts up.

Reportedly, a limited number of families are also allowed by the NSW state government but they will have to maintain the quarantine protocols.

Meanwhile, the Australia players returning from the UAE will join their respective camp from November 12 and will train separately.
Also, the Indian team is set to don ‘retro jersey’ inspired by the 1992 World Cup. Teams like Australia and New Zealand have previously experimented with their old designs.

While Shastri mentioned almost everyone from the top brass of the BCCI in his tweet, he missed out BCCI president Ganguly, which irked a few fans on social media.

The IPL 2020 was earlier indefinitely postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak with the lucrative tournament missing the April-May window. However, the BCCI stepped in to make sure that IPL 2020 gets the September-November window and decided to shift the tournament to the UAE. BCCI came up with the SOPs and ensured the smooth flow of all the logistics including the bio-secure bubble arrangements in the UAE.

Sourav Ganguly, speaking to India Today, had said: "The world needed sport, the world needed life to get back to normal. The entire BCCI team, not just the office-bearers, the employees and staff who work on the ground, they have been in Dubai for the last 2 and half months have pulled off a fantastic thing.

"And heartiest congratulations to all the players, each team for making this successful, without their discipline, this could not have been successful," Ganguly had said.

AUS vs IND: Australia announce strong 17-man squad for India Tests; Pucovski, Green get call-up

Mumbai Indians on Tuesday defeated Delhi Capitals in the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 to lift their fifth IPL trophy. Mumbai Indians, who have played arguably the most attractive and effective brand of cricket in IPL 2020, defeated Delhi Capitals by 5 wickets to seal their fifth IPL trophy in what has been a sensational campaign for the four-time, now five-time IPL winners.

Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer opted to bat first as the first-time finalists went with the same strategy as Qualifier 2. However, Trent Boult came into the party early as the Kiwi speedster dismissed Marcus Stoinis in the very first ball of the match before soon sending Ajinkya Rahane back to the pavilion.

Mumbai Indians picked Jayant Yadav ahead of Rahul Chahar for the final and move came good for Rohit Sharma as the off-spinner got rid of an in-form Shikhar Dhawan. With Delhi Capitals struggling at 22/3, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant came good with the willow as they stitched a 98-run partnership while smashing a half-century each. While Iyer scored 65 not-out off 50, Pant scored 56 off 38 deliveries as Delhi Capitals posted 156/7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 157, Mumbai Indians were off to a flying start as Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock went all-out from the word go. While sixes and fours flew smoothly for MI in the early overs, QDK departed for 20 off 12. Suryakumar Yadav started well but was a victim of a run-out which could only win plenty of hearts.

Ishan Kishan continued his sensational run with the bat and ably supported Rohit Sharma, who went onto score a terrific half-century. While Rohit departed for 68, Pollard was dismissed for 9 off 4. However, Mumbai Indians safely crossed the winning line to lift their fifth IPL trophy.

Suryakumar: Preparations, processes and routine are important. they just one thing - we'll take care of this. You go and express yourself. [The Rohit sacrifice] he was batting really well. Most importantly, he's been anchoring well since the first game. I don't mind sacrificing for him at all.

Bumrah: It means a great deal to play. We know it's a difficult time, everyone is stuck at home. We're lucky that we could come to work and entertain people watching at home. If we could bring smiles to their faces, it's the best thing we could do. From the first game, I felt my rhythm was up. The last piece of the puzzle was missing. But when I bowled the Super Over, I had to execute against Virat and AB and since then it clicked into place.

Now, Indian captain, Virat Kohli is facing calls to hand over the white-ball leadership duties to Rohit Sharma after yet another disappointing season in the Indian Premier League with Royal Challengers Bangalore.

While Rohit has led Mumbai Indians to five IPL trophies, Kohli has failed to win one thus far, prompting calls for the Hitman to take over the captaincy duties of the national T20 side.

India are set to leave for Australia this week to start a two-week quarantine phase before playing three T20Is, as many ODIs and four Tests.

Following the IPL final, former India batsman Gautam Gambhir and ex-England captain Michael Vaughan said Sharma should take over as the national T20 captain.

"Rohit has won five IPL titles; he is the most successful captain in the history of the tournament," Gambhir told ESPNcricinfo.

"Going forward, it'll be a shame if he doesn't get India's white-ball (one-day) or just T20 captaincy."

Rohit has completely transformed Mumbai Indians since taking over the charge from Australian great Ricky Ponting in 2013, and all five of their trophies have come under his leadership.

Kohli-led Royal Challengers Bangalore had bowed out in the playoffs in IPL 2020, after two bottom-placed finishes in the previous three editions.

Vaughan also backed Sharma to become India's T20 leader.

"Without question, Rohit Sharma should be the Indian T20 captain," he wrote on Twitter, describing him as a "fantastic man manager and leader".

"He knows exactly how to win T20 games. It would also give Virat a chance to take a breather and just be the player."
Vaughan said relieving Kohli of the captaincy was not "an admittance of failure", but rather "what is best for the Indian cricket team".

Meanwhile, Rohit is not part of India’s ODI and T20I sides for Australia as he is still ‘recovering’ from a hamstring injury that saw him miss four IPL matches.

The 33-year-old will be part of the four Tests, however, while Kohli will miss three of them as he is taking paternity leave after the opening match in Adelaide.

AFP Sport looks at five things we learned from the Twenty20 tournament, which was played behind closed doors in the United Arab Emirates.

- 'Smiles back' -

Delhi coach Ricky Ponting admitted he was "sceptical" about the tournament going ahead during the pandemic, but in the event he said it was "extremely well run".

After a nearly six-month delay as India's coronavirus crisis grew, the 53-day tournament finally got under way in the United Arab Emirates, where it took place in strict bio-secure "bubbles" and at three empty stadiums.

Despite the unusual conditions, Mumbai Indians paceman Jasprit Bumrah said he was happy to be part of a tournament that brought the "smiles back" to cricket fans.

The teams, however, felt the strain of life in a bubble with Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli and England's Eoin Morgan both saying it can be mentally tough on players.

- Tale of two skippers -

Kohli and Rohit Sharma were both appointed IPL captains for their teams in 2013, but eight years down the line their leadership has met with contrasting results.

While Sharma bagged his fifth title for Mumbai Indians, an IPL crown still eludes Kohli's Bangalore.

After finishing bottom of the eight-team table last year, Bangalore made the play-offs this season, an achievement that didn't stop former Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir calling for Kohli to step down.

But former India opener Virender Sehwag backed Kohli, saying the "captain is only as good as his team".

- 'Universe Boss' at 41 -

Chris Gayle, the ultimate big-hitter, wasn't introduced until midway through the tournament by Kings XI Punjab but he immediately injected life into their faltering campaign with some explosive batting.

The 41-year-old amassed 288 runs in seven innings, including two match-winning fifties. The left-hander went past 1,000 T20 sixes, extending his runaway record, with a heave over mid-wicket off Rajasthan Royals fast bowler Kartik Tyagi, 19.

The flamboyant Gayle, who modestly calls himself "Universe Boss", said his younger team-mates had urged him: "Don't retire."

- Speed guns -

Fast bowlers aren't often the heroes in T20 games in the sub-continent. But the UAE pitches gave the pacemen a chance to shine.

Delhi's Anrich Nortje bowled the fastest ball in IPL history at 97 mph, and fellow South African quick Kagiso Rabada finished as the leading bowler with 30 wickets.

Mumbai's pace duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult were second and third in the list of wicket-takers, with 52 scalps between them.

"I feel the conditions in the UAE have something for everyone," Rabada said.

- Indian talent -

Bangalore batsman Devdutt Padikkal made an impact as a confident opening partner to Australia's Aaron Finch, one of an an impressive brigade of young Indian players.

The 20-year-old left-hander was named emerging player of 2020 IPL after scoring 473 runs, with captain Virat Kohli praising his "class and efficiency".

Mumbai Indians batsman Ishan Kishan went better with more than 500 runs en route to lifting the trophy at 22 years of age.

Spinners Rahul Chahar (Mumbai), Ravi Bishnoi (Kings XI Punjab) and Kolkata quicks Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi also made their presence felt.

Brett Lee, the former Australia bowler now working as a commentator, said "Indian talent stood out".

Bubbles and the boss: five things we learned from the IPL

IPL 2020: From Most Valuable Player to Emerging Player of the Year, check out all awards from IPL

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) successfully managed to hold the 13th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in the UAE as the lucrative T20 tournament concluded on Tuesday. Now, it is being reported that the BCCI is looking to hold IPL 2021 in India with a full-fledged mega-auction somewhere around early next year.

Multiple reports have suggested that the Indian cricket board has already informed the franchise to start preparing for the mega auction, which could be held early in 2021.

“The BCCI has told us to be prepared for an auction in a couple of months. Though it is not official, that they have asked us to be ready means they will go ahead as planned. Moreover, with a new team coming in, it makes sense to have an auction now rather than deferring it by a year,” a franchise official told The New Indian Express.

However, what comes as a big surprise that the board is also looking to include a new franchise for the upcoming edition. The ninth franchise in IPL will be from Ahmedabad with Sardar Patel Stadium (Motera) likely to be their home stadium.

Generally, at mega auctions, franchises are allowed to retain three players with option to use Right To Match (RTM) card on two more players. However, there is no clarity regarding the retention policy yet for the forthcoming mega auctions.

“The retention policy should continue even if a new team comes in because at this stage, it won’t be wise to have all players in the auction pool. Teams will have to compromise on brand value which is built on their star players,” said another franchise official.

Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by five wickets in Dubai as the Rohit Sharma-led side lifted their fifth IPL trophy.

IPL 2021 to be played with 9 teams, mega auction likely: Reports

An insatiable hunger to succeed, the willingness to put in the extra yards and extensive work on the nitty gritties culminated in an unprecedented fifth IPL title for Mumbai Indians, the players, who are responsible for Delhi Capitals' clinical demolition said on Tuesday.

Opener Quinton de Kock said after the final, "Mumbai have a great set up, so we've been able to move with the gym work and training and stuff. We're reaping the rewards today for it. It's a great feeling."

"I think this year because there were so many questions around Mumbai in general, whether we can win back to back, we put in extra effort. You can see it's paid off. We worked extra hard on the nitty gritties."

If last year's one-run win over Chennai Super Kings was an absolute cliffhanger, Rohit's fluent 68 made it an anti-climax with Mumbai Indians chasing the target of 157 in 18.4 overs.

"It's a great feeling. I've been here 11 years, fifth trophy. No one sees the planning and training, it's pressure playing for a franchise like this," MI veteran Kieron Pollard.

The West Indian swashbuckler added: "The amount of trophies, the amount of work, the amount of players who go on to play for their countries, I think we'll have to say so (that this is the best T20 franchise)."

Elder of the Pandya brothers, Krunal said: "It's the hunger. The way we went about the games, there was always 100 percent. A lot of credit goes to how we prepared. One month before we came, everyone knew their roles."

"Everyone was in good shape, just executing what they were doing in the nets."

Another MI star, Suryakumar Yadav attributed the success to preparation and following the proces.

"Preparations, processes and routine is important. The team just said one thing - we'll take care of this. You go and express yourself," Surykumar concluded

IPL 13: Hunger and working on nitty gritties did it, feel MI players

Unable to bet legally, tens of millions of Indian cricket fans have turned to fantasy games based on the Indian Premier League, which have exploited a loophole to create a billion-dollar industry.

Bolstered by foreign investment, Indian firms have invested heavily in the cash-for-points online games, despite fears that government regulation could put the new industry at risk.

Dream11 -- now the main sponsor for the IPL, which has its final on Tuesday in Dubai -- says it has more than 100 million users for its cricket, football and NBA platforms.

Users pay a fee, often less than 50 US cents, to join a contest that escapes India's ban on gambling because it's considered a game of "skill".

They register a team of favourite players and win points for their performances in IPL games, which can be turned into cash.

The number of fantasy games has mushroomed for this year's IPL, which is being held in the United Arab Emirates as India struggles with the world's second biggest coronavirus outbreak.

Despite the possibility of new regulations, the cash is rolling in, and industry players say the sector could grow to be worth billions of dollars.

- 'Still awaiting big money' -

When software engineer Amit Bhandari started playing Dream11's fantasy cricket two years ago, he never expected to get hooked on its promise of easy money.

"I am still awaiting my big-money day," said the 38-year-old, who called the habit "harmless" even though he hides it from his family, fearing disapproval.

The stigma is familiar to Vinit Godara, co-founder of MyTeam11, a fantasy platform launched in 2016.

In its early years, the company could not get a digital payment platform or a corporate bank account, due to worries about even a hint of betting in India.

Match-fixing scandals regularly hit cricket, and Godara has struggled to explain the difference between fantasy sports and illegal betting to customers.

But this year, Indian fans have seized on fantasy gaming, eager to escape the boredom of lockdown and encouraged by a marketing blitz featuring top stars such as Virat Kohli.

"The IPL has come as a boon for the fantasy gaming industry and we have observed a significant jump in user engagement," Godara told AFP.

Other platforms have also seen a surge in business.

"We are looking at crossing 80 million users by the end of the IPL," Sai Srinivas, co-founder of the Mobile Premier League app, told AFP.

The Games24x7 platform is predicting 900 percent growth in paid users from 2019 to 2020 because of "pent-up demand in the lockdown", co-founder Bhavin Pandya told AFP.

- 'No regulation' -

Foreign investors are eager to join in.

According to IndiaTech.org, a think tank, Indian fantasy platforms have attracted more than $200 million in foreign investment since 2018, including from US hedge funds such as Tiger Global and Chinese online giant Tencent.

Only 20 percent of an estimated 100 million Indian gamers pay to play on fantasy platforms, while the others stick to free games.

The companies see major growth ahead. Cheap phones and data will push the number of internet users in India from 700 million to nearly 975 million by 2025, according to data platform Statista.

But not everyone is happy. Advertising professional Adarsh Sharma said he has yet to take home any cash, despite playing intensely, and he is sceptical about testimonials claiming huge wins.

"I am voicing the (concerns) of thousands of participants," said the 40-year-old.

Other worries dog the industry.

"There is no regulation... and five or six states have banned different forms of online gaming including fantasy sports," Rameesh Kailasam, CEO of IndiaTech.org, told AFP.

For now, India's government appears content to play the game. The sector contributed more than $60 million in taxes in the last tax year.

But the environment remains unpredictable. Fantasy firms fear regulation or even an outright ban.

"We may end up choking another sunrise sector," Kailasam warned.

Dream ticket: fantasy games win big from cricket's IPL

The West Indies cricket squad was rebuked Wednesday for repeatedly breaking Covid-19 isolation rules inside their team hotel in New Zealand, prompting health authorities to revoke their training privileges.

Cricket West Indies chief Johnny Grave said he was "bitterly disappointed" at the breaches, which he said had the potential to jeopardise the entire tour.

"They've let themselves down, let West Indies cricket down and potentially put the tour at risk and the New Zealand population at risk," the Antigua-based administrator told Kiwi reporters in a hastily arranged conference call.

The cricketers are undergoing a mandatory 14-day quarantine in Christchurch, but the health department said they had not abided by strict bio-security protocols requiring the squad to stay in two separate bubbles.

"Members of the team were confirmed to have repeatedly broken managed isolation rules," director-general of health Ashley Bloomfield said in a statement.

"Many of these incidents have been captured on CCTV and have also been reported by staff. The incidents include groups mingling and sharing food."

Bloomfield said the breaches all occurred within the hotel where the team is based during the quarantine period and there was no risk to the general public.

He said a special dispensation allowing the West Indians to train during quarantine had been revoked, adding: "It is a privilege to come here but in return, they have to stick to the rules."

Grave said the training ban was a "huge blow" but he agreed with the move, acknowledging New Zealand had worked hard to contain the coronavirus to a level where domestic life in the country is near-normal.

He was surprised his players had failed to follow the rules, saying they had experienced similar bio-secure bubbles touring England and competing in the Caribbean Premier League.

While such environments were challenging for players, Grave said they were the only way cricket could be played in the current environment.

"I am sympathetic, but at the same time I'm also bitterly disappointed," he said.

Grave said Cricket West Indies was launching an internal investigation and would interview all players to determine what occurred.

The health department said it would provide evidence to the probe and leave it to the governing body to determine if disciplinary action was needed against individual players.

New Zealand Cricket said it supported the health department's position and public safety remained its top priority when hosting overseas teams.

It said the West Indies were in their 12th day of isolation and, if all players were virus-free, they would depart Friday for Queenstown, where they have warm-up matches against New Zealand A.

The first of three Twenty20 international against the Black Caps is scheduled for November 27 at Eden Park, followed by two Tests.

West Indies break Covid bubble rules in New Zealand

Cricket Australia (CA) is hoping crowd limits at stadiums can be relaxed for India’s blockbuster tour as COVID-19 restrictions ease across the country.

Australia has for weeks recorded just daily single digit new cases, with an outbreak in southern Victoria state quashed by a four-month lockdown.

Caps on stadium crowds remain, however, which could cost CA tens of millions of dollars in revenue.

Victoria is limiting crowds at the 100,000-seat Melbourne Cricket Ground to 25,000 per day during the Dec. 26 Boxing Day test, the second of the four-match series against India.

Test venues Adelaide Oval and the Sydney Cricket Ground are limited to about half-capacity, while Brisbane’s Gabba is capped at about 70%.

“We’re going to give all priority to safety but we’ll continue to work with the authorities to see if we can’t increase those capacities a bit as we move forward,” CA interim Chief Executive Nick Hockley told Australian radio station SEN on Tuesday.

CA last month reported a A$46 million deficit ($33.48 million) for the year to June 30, and projected a A$120 million dip in projected revenue for the 2020/21 period due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

India’s tour, which kicks off with a one-day international series starting in Sydney on Nov. 27, will provide a vital injection of revenue for CA despite the limited involvement of one of the biggest drawcards in Virat Kohli.

The India skipper will miss the last three tests to return home for the birth of his child.

“I think when the pregnancy was announced it was always on the cards and we have to respect the fact he wants to be there for the birth of his first child,” said Hockley.

The India players and staff will undertake a 14-day quarantine after arriving in Australia and be confined to a biosecure “bubble” during the tour.

They are expected to land in Australia on Thursday but Hockley said travel arrangements for their families had not been settled.

“We were always talking about a very limited number of families and we’re working through it,” said Hockley.

Babar Azam has been appointed as Pakistan Test captain, which now makes him the captain across all three formats. His first assignment will be to captain Pakistan in the ICC World Test Championship fixtures against New Zealand, which will be played in Mount Maunganui and Christchurch from 26-30 December and 3-7 January, respectively.

Babar replaces Azhar Ali, who last captained Pakistan against England this summer.

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani confirmed the appointment following a meeting with Azhar Ali on Tuesday evening in which he also thanked him for his contributions as a captain. The PCB Chairman subsequently spoke with Babar Azam following his side’s eight wickets in the third T20I against Zimbabwe and congratulated him on his appointment.

Ehsan Mani: “I want to thank Azhar Ali for stepping up last year by captaining the side in what was a historic first home Test series in over a decade. I believe Azhar still has a lot of cricket left in him and Pakistan cricket can continue to make the best use of his experience and knowledge as specialist top-order batsman moving forward.

“Babar Azam was identified at a very young age as a future leader and as part of his progression and development, he was appointed white-ball captain last year. With his consistent performance and leadership skills, he has demonstrated that he is ready to take on the additional responsibilities of a captain.

“As we are looking into the future, it is appropriate that we appoint him the captain now so that he continues to grow stronger with every match. I wish Babar all the best and remain optimistic that he will help Pakistan cricket make an upward movement across all formats not only through his performance but also with his positive attitude and result-oriented approach.”

Kiwi speedster Trent Boult gave a rousing start to Mumbai Indians in the final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday as the left-arm speedster dismissed Marcus Stoinis off the first delivery of the match. With the dismissal, Boult surpassed the likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Zaheer Khan and Praveen Kumar to achieve a new record in IPL.

Boult, with the wicket of Stoinis, has the most wickets in the first over of an IPL season. Boult has picked up eight wickets in the first over of IPL 2020. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is next in the list with six wickets in IPL 2016 whereas Zaheer Khan had five first-over wickets to his name in IPL 2012. Praveen Kumar had five first-over scalps in IPL 2013.

Most wickets in the first over of an IPL season:

Trent Boult - 8 in 2020*

Bhuvneshwar Kumar - 6 in 2016

Zaheer Khan - 5 in 2012

Praveen Kumar - 5 in 2013

Despite losing Marcus Stoinis in the very first delivery of IPL 2020 final, Shikhar Dhawan and Ajinkya Rahane continued with the run-flow. But it was Boult again who dismissed Ajinkya Rahane in what was a soft dismissal. After losing two wickets within three overs of the match, Delhi Capitals must focus on rebuilding their innings or else it might be the fifth IPL trophy for Mumbai Indians.

"We always wanted somebody who could get those wickets for us early in the powerplay with the new ball. We looked across the world and, obviously, it is a no-brainer that he is the best bowler with the new ball when it comes to swinging the new ball back into the batsmen, and to a left-hander taking the ball away. He is the best in the business,” Rohit said ahead of the IPL 2020 final.

"We always wanted him and luckily we got him traded from Delhi and he has not disappointed us. He has bowled well with the new ball and also in the middle and the back-end. He is a great asset to have in the squad and hope he can do it one more time for us," said Sharma.

Delhi Capitals skipper Shreyas Iyer on Tuesday won the toss and elected to bat first against Mumbai Indians in what promises to be a cracking final of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 at the Dubai International Stadium.

While Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals have faced each other thrice in IPL 2020, the Mumbai outfit has come out victorious in each occasion. However, Mumbai Indians have never won the final of IPL when batting second and that could be the reason behind DC opting to bat first.

The team atmosphere is really motivated: Shreyas Iyer

“We'll bat. It really worked out pretty well in the last game. When you have a really good total on the board the bowling gets a lot of confidence. We've seen it through the tournament and in a big final, runs on the board helps. The wicket also looks amazing to bat on. They have been champions through the years and even the way they've been playing this season. We have nothing to lose, we have to embrace it and have no regrets at the end of it. The team atmosphere is really motivated, we are in a good mood and have to enjoy the day. We are sticking with the same team,” Iyer said at the toss.
