Bindyarani won silver in women`s 55kg on a successful day at the CWG weightlifting arena. She won the medal a couple of hours after Mirabai Chanu had bagged India`s first gold in this edition of the Games.

India's weightlifting star Mirabai Chanu lived up to her favourite tag at the Commonwealth Games 2022 as she clinched an elusive gold medal in the women's 49kg category on Saturday (July 30). Chanu bagged India's first gold medal at the mega event after dominating the proceedings in the 49kg final. She lifted a record 201 kg overall to set a Games record and successfully defend her title.

The Tokyo Olympics silver medallist had won the gold medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia and was one of the favourites to win the title once again this year. She came up with a flawless display in the final by lifting a record 88kg in the snatch round before lifting 113 kg in the clean and jerk round to finish on top of the podium.

Her 88 kg lift in the snatch was also Chanu's personal best and was 12 kg more than her nearest rival in the snatch round at the final on Saturday. The 27-year-old was in a league of her own as she completely dominated the event on her way to gold.

Reacting after her fabulous lop-sided victory, Chanu said she felt her competition was not against her opponents in the final but herself. The Indian star weightlifter also stated how Commonwealth Games has been easy for her and she wanted to match her personal best at the event which she successfully managed to pull off.

“It was not a competition against the other opponents, and I was only competing with myself and did not have to fight much. Everybody knows that the Commonwealth Games is easy for me but I wanted to give it my personal best,” Chanu told India Today after clinching gold at the CWG 2022.

Chanu had gone for a 90 kg lift in her third attempt during the snatch round on Saturday but failed to pull it off. The Indian weightlifter revealed she has been able to lift 90 kg during training but it didn't come off on Saturday. However, the newly-crowned gold medallist said she was happy with her effort at the Games this year.

“My target in this competition was to better my ‘snatch’ game, since it is a weak point of mine. So, after we came back from Tokyo, we worked a lot on it. I am very happy that I was able to touch 88kgs. I have touched 90 in practice, but it did not happen today. However, I am very happy with my performance,” said Chanu.

Ghanaian boxer Shakul Samed has been suspended from the Commonwealth Games after testing positive for a banned substance at the competition in Birmingham, officials said on Friday.

Samed`s A sample was found to contain the banned diuretic and masking agent Furosemide, the Commonwealth Games Federation said in a statement.

"He has therefore been suspended with immediate effect," the statement said.

"He will now have the opportunity to provide further information, including requesting analysis of his B sample, before any charge is issued."

Even though India dominated the match in all departments, it was a lacklustre performance from them in the first two quarters as Ghana’s defence produced a resolute show to frustrate their fancied opponents.

What was frustrating for India was the weak link-up between the midfield and the forwards.

Australia beat India by three wickets in the opening Group A game of the Commonwealth Games here on Friday. Electing to bat, India posted a challenging 154 for eight in 20 overs with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur hitting a breezy half-century.

Harmanpreet smashed 52 off 34 balls with eight fours and a six while opener Shafali Verma played an attacking knock of 48 off 33 balls.

Smriti Mandhana (25 off 17 balls) also started well but couldn't convert that into a substantial knock. 
Left-arm spinner Jess Jonassen (4/22) was the pick of the Australian bowlers. Australia overhauled the target of 155 with an over to spare.

CWG 2022: From PV Sindhu to Bajrang Punia! Full schedule of Indian athletes in showpiece event

On Wednesday (July 27), PV Sindhu added another feather to her illustrious hat as the 27-year-old superstar shuttler has been named as India's flagbearer for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, to kick off in Birmingham on July 29.

It was touted to be a two-way battle between Neeraj Chopra and Sindhu for being the flagbearer before the shuttler was given the responsibility by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). Neeraj, for the unversed, has bowed out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury which he sustained during his silver-medal win in the men's javelin throw final at the recently-concluded World Atheltics Championships.

"It's a great honour to be bestowed with the responsibility to lead the contingent and hold the flag at such an august gathering. I'm extremely happy and I wish all my fellow contingent all the best for the Games. I would like to thank IOA also for choosing me as the flag-bearer," Sindhu said after the announcement here on Wednesday.

Sindhu was India's flagbearer at the last edition, in Gold Coast, where she returned with a silver medal in the women's singles. This time around, the two-time Olympic medallist will be eager to secure the elusive gold medal.

"The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) is delighted to announce shuttler PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medallist, as the Flagbearer of Team India at the Opening Ceremony," the IOA had said in a statement.

"Two other highly deserving athletes were considered to be Team India's Flagbearer: weightlifter Ms Mirabai Chanu and boxer Ms Lovlina Borgohain, who are both Olympic medallists," it added.

Chopra said he is extremely disappointed and hurt about not being able to take part in the Commonwealth Games this year.

"Hello everyone, I'm extremely disappointed to inform you all that I will not be able to represent the country at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. I had been feeling uncomfortable after the pull I felt in my groin during my fourth throw at the World Championships. On having it investigated medically yesterday by a group of doctors here in the US, a minor strain was discovered and I have been advised to undergo rehabilitation and give it rest for the next few weeks," Chopra said in a statement shared on social media.

Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has "grown up" watching multi-sporting events like the Commonwealth Games and she is already getting goosebumps thinking about the walk she will take with the rest of the contingent at the opening ceremony on July 28.

Now it is not only about cricket but other teams also and we will be there for them to cheer up and we want to celebrate each and every medal. This time it will be totally different and we are all very excited," she said.

"Yes, as a cricketer, we always want that we want to play more cricket and this year we are getting to participate in a multi-sport event. So, when you go for a big-event it is important to perform well, the more we get such tournaments, it is good for women's cricket."

Harmanpreet said she will think about what approach the team will take after seeing the conditions. The team departs on Sunday.

"Look, you are speaking about targets (totals), once we reach England, then only we can see. Right now we don't have any idea about the wickets. If you talk about our team, we always love to play positive cricket and that is what we have been doing for a long -time and the approach will be the same,? she added.

The Games-bound Indian athletes and officials will be staying at five different "Villages" with the women's cricket team being put up in a separate facility in the Birmingham city centre.

On her special win, she said, "It feels nice to win a gold medal for my country. In 2011, it was my first international competition. This is my second World Championships but in flyweight, it is my first-ever. My aim was to win a gold medal and I am really happy I managed to do it."

She stated, "I am happy to make my own mark at the world level. This is my senior World C'ships. In flyweight, this was my first World C'ships. I still managed to win gold medal for my country and hopefully I will keep performing well and winning more medals in the future." "Actually, my game plan was to win the first two rounds unanimously. First-round went as per plan but in the second round, she came back. So in the third round, I had ot go all-out and I did the same to win unanimously 5-0. When my hand was raised, I was very happy," Nikhat added.

In the summit clash, the&nbsp;judges scored the bout 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, 30-27, 29-28 in the Indian's favour.

After Nikhat's performance, PM Narendra Modi also&nbsp;tweeted saying, "Our boxers have made us proud! I also congratulate Manisha Moun and Parveen Hooda for their Bronze medals in the same competition."

Nikhat also responded to Modi's tweet&nbsp;while speaking&nbsp;in a virtual chat with the media and said, "I do not know who has tweeted for me till now, I am going to the hotel right now. Stars such as Bajrang Punia and Ravi Dahiya will not get direct entries into the final of their respective categories when the national federation holds selection trials for Commonwealth Games and Asian Games owing to the unrest among upcoming grapplers during the recent Asian Championship trials.

During the trials for the Mongolia event, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) had given direct entries to Bajrang and Dahiya for the spot-clinching final in their respective weight categories, while the others slogged through the draw. Bajrang faced stiff competition from Rohit in the only bout he fought in the 65kg while an annoyed Aman gave a walkover to Ravi in the 57kg final after battling his way to the summit clash. 
Both Aman and Ravi train at Chhatrasal Stadium.

Deepak Punia (86kg) was also given a direct entry to the final, a move which the other wrestlers termed as unfair. No one complained officially but the decision was criticised and the WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was seen assuring the wrestlers that they would see better arrangement "next time." 
The WFI is now set to conduct the trials for men (May 17, in New Delhi) and women (May 16, in Lucknow) to pick teams for the CWG and Asian Games.

"No one will get direct entry to final this time. All will have to come through draw for the CWG and Asiad trials. We have not received any request for special treatment as of today but if star wrestlers want some benefit, given their status, the committee can consider but definitely they will not get direct entry into final," said a WFI source.

"Will it be fair on a wrestler who wins four bouts and still sits at home?" 
It is expected that the WFI will ask star wrestlers to compete from the semifinals stage during the trials. 
Ravi has been dominant since returning to competition after grabbing a silver medal at the Tokyo Games. He is miles ahead of wrestlers in his category, even as Bajrang struggles to get back his touch. 
While Bajrang escaped the trial bout against Rohit, the 28-year-old Tokyo Games bronze medallist was far from his usual self at the Asian Championship in Ulaanbaatar, where he won a silver after losing to 19-year-old Iranian junior world champion Rahman Mousa Amouzadkhalili.

His recent struggles must have raised hopes of wrestlers who are eyeing a spot in the Indian team in the 65kg category, which Bajrang has made his own with his dominating show in the past few years. 
A section in the fraternity believes that there is nothing wrong in giving special treatment to special athletes like Bajrang, Ravi and Deepak, since protecting them from injuries is also a responsibility of the federation. 
"If you have four wrestlers whose capability to win international medals is beyond doubt, they must be protected from injuries. Why ask them to play full draw. They are there because they have proved their worth," opined Sujeet Maan, personal coach of Bajrang.

"I personally feel wrestlers who won either gold or silver at the Asian Championship can be asked to play just one bout, the final against the winner of the draw. "No one plays to lose. The new wrestlers just want to defeat these stars but our second line is still not mature enough to win medals at global events. So why risk injuries to our real medal contenders," said Maan, adding that eventually, they would follow whatever the WFI decides.

Respected coach Virender Singh also said that the WFI must keep in mind the overall benefit of the sport. 
"Look, main thing is to win medal, not just participation. These 3-4 guys go for medals. Others have competed in the past in same categories but did they win medals? These boys are doing well and again asked to appear in trials, why?," asked Virender.

"By consistently managing weight, their muscle go weak, kidneys get affected. They have to stay empty stomach and then sweat it out to maintain weight for trials, it affects body adversely. Doing it again and again is not good for their health.

"Their recovery is very important since they do same weight lose drill ahead of competitions. If at all the federation wants to encourage the second line, what they can do is to have trials of other wrestlers on one day and the winner can compete with the established one on the next day, so they are fresh for the tough bout," he suggested.

The winners of the trials will book their berths in the Indian team for the CWG and Asian Games while the finalists will get to compete in the World Championship, which will be held in Serbia in September.&nbsp;

"It’s a great honour to have Victoria chosen as the host venue for the 2026 Commonwealth Games -- we can’t wait to welcome the world to all of our state," Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said. Victoria capital Melbourne hosted the 2006 Games and will stage the 2026 opening ceremony at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, but the sports will be spread far and wide. Each of the regional hubs in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo and Gippsland will have their own athletes` village.

Geelong, a port city an hour southwest of Melbourne, will host swimming, gymnastics, beach volleyball and other sports. Ballarat and Bendigo, goldfield cities in central Victoria, will have athletics, boxing, netball, squash and weightlifting. The Gippsland region in eastern Victoria will have rugby sevens, badminton and cycling. Twenty20 cricket has also been included in a core group of 16 sports.

"I’m sure from (Commonwealth Games authorities`) point of view, it’s a bit riskier than just running it in the middle of a large city."But to do this and to do it well – and we will – there’s an opportunity here ... an opportunity like no other."

RUNWAY FOR 2032 
The quadrennial Games, a multi-sport gathering for mostly former British colonies, has struggled to remain relevant, with four of the last five editions held in Australia or Britain. 
Australia, however, relishes its athletes` dominance in a relatively weak pool of nations, and fans flocked to the well-organised Gold Coast Games in 2018.

Victoria will be used as a "runway" for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. "We now have a second major home Games in prospect," said Australian Olympic Committee chief Matt Carroll. "Commonwealth Games in 2026 is a major marker on that runway." Victoria estimated the Games would contribute more than A$3 billion ($2.22 billion) to its economy and create thousands of jobs.
