How India generates its power now As of June 30, India’s installed power capacity composition is: 49.92 per cent thermal or fossil fuels, 1.81 per cent nuclear and 48.27 per cent renewable energy (including large hydropower). “Timely interventions for renewables, like the waiver of Inter-State Transmission System (ISTS) charges and regular auctions, have elevated India's commitment to sustainability, and today it has the world's third-largest solar power capacity,” said Aarti Khosla, Founder and Director, Climate Trends. India's global standing on emissions India’s per capita emissions remain at one-third of the global average, which keeps it among the lowest worldwide. It is also one of the few G20 countries on track to meet its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) on climate action. https://www.wionews.com/videos/sustainable-rice-for-a-changing-climate-9036529/embed How India achieved the clean energy milestone Several government initiatives have helped India achieve rapid growth in clean energy development. India achieves clean energy target milestone five years ahead of schedule. Here is why it matters

Earth's largest waterfall is hiding in the ocean. The Denmark Strait cataract is buried inside Arctic waters and stretches over 11,500 feet. In comparison, the Niagara Falls, comprising three parts, has its highest point measuring only 181 feet. Angel Falls, located in Venezuela, has a height of 3,212 feet and is the highest waterfall in the world. Yet, it dwarfs in front of the Denmark Strait, which, despite being gigantic, is not visible. The humongous fall has a mighty descent, but no one has ever heard its roar. It does not even release a mist to signal its presence. This waterfall lies between Iceland and Greenland and starts thousands of feet below the surface. The Denmark Strait cataract was discovered decades ago by testing the temperature and salinity profiles through the channel. It follows completely different principles from waterfalls found on land that form when rivers spill over cliffs. The Denmark Strait is a submarine cascade which is a result of the denser, colder water gushing in from the Nordic Sea. As it crashes downward into the Atlantic Ocean, it quickly spreads, with over 3.2 million cubic meters of water flowing per second. This is way more than the Amazon River’s flow into the Atlantic. As the water falls over it, a massive waterfall is created, which is nothing humans can even imagine. The Denmark Strait cataract is not simply the world's largest waterfall. Its presence miles under the ocean plays a crucial role in regulating the world's climate. As the world heats up, scientists warn that this waterfall could also undergo changes, triggering alterations in weather across the world. The channelling of cold water from the Nordic Sea into the Atlantic supports a process known as the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC). It is what dictates the weather patterns across the world by distributing heat and nutrients to all parts of the world. The ocean life would be very different without it, as would the low temperatures of Europe, and the marine life thriving in the world's oceans. In short, this undersea waterfall is vital to how the world functions. Marine scientist Anna Sanchez Vidal highlights one place which is already feeling the effects of changes on the undersea waterfall. “A good example is on the Catalan coast, where the decrease in the number of tramontane days in winter in the Gulf of Lion and north of the Catalan coast is causing a weakening of this oceanographic process, which is decisive in regulating the climate and has a great impact on deep ecosystems,” she says.

Gateway to Hell: Darvaza gas crater, burning since 1970s, is partially contained now. Know about its story

Some time in the 1970s Russian scientists ignited an underground pocket of natural gas in Turkmenistan. It burned on ever since, becoming known as Gateway to Hell or Door to Hell, and becoming a tourist attraction in the reclusive central asian nation. On Thursday (Jun 5), the government said that the fire in the Darvaza gas crater has been partially contained. The fire that burned for half a century in the Karakum desert since 1971 and has been emitting methane gas in large quantities ever since, is now reduced three-fold, according to a government official. "Whereas before a huge glow from the blaze was visible from several kilometres away, hence the name 'Gateway to Hell', today only a faint source of combustion remains," AFP news agency quoted Irina Luryeva, a director at state-owned energy company Turkmengaz, as saying. As methane emissions add to climate crisis, several wells were drilled around the crater to capture methane. Turkmenistan, home to the world's fourth-largest gas reserves, is also its biggest emitter of methane through gas leaks, though the government denies this claim. The story of Darvaza gas crater The Darvaza gas crater is one of a few natural gas reserves that continue to burn after being ignited, the other famous one being Baba Gurgur in Iraq. In official parlance, it is called 'the Shining of Karakum'. The floor of the crater is lit by hundreds of natural gas fires. The crater is 260 kilometres from the Turkmen capital of Ashgabat, located in the village of Darvaza in the middle of the Karakum Desert. The crater, having a diameter of 60–70 metres and a depth of about 30 metres, emits a foul smell. Its history is mired in dispute and controversy, with some claiming that it collapsed in the 1960s. Some accounts claim that the gas fire was a result of an accident in 1971, when Soviet engineers drilled the site which then collapsed. They ignited the crater to prevent the emission of poisonous gases. Gateway to Hell, the tourist attraction In spite of the bad odour, the crater remains a tourist attraction, particularly famed for the night trips to see the fire burn in all its glory. Since being declared as a natural reserve in 2013, thousands of tourists have flocked to the area. George Kourounis, who entered the bottom of the crater to collect soil samples in the first such effort, called it 'a coliseum of fire.' "Just everywhere you look it's thousands of these small fires. The sound was like that of a jet engine, this roaring, high-pressure, gas-burning sound. And there was no smoke. It burns very cleanly, so there's nothing to obscure your view. You can just see every little lick of flame," he told National Georgraphic Channel, which sponsored the feat. The crater was also the spot where President Berdimuhamedow famously appeared in order to dispel speculations about his death. Captured on state TV, he did doughnut stunts in the area. Efforts to contain the fire at Darvaza For decades, the Turkmen government has been trying to contain the fire. In 2022, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow announced plans to extinguish the crater as it was causing health issues for locals and causing environmental damage. The drilling of wells around the capture has been happening for years, with the aim to capture methane.

Greenland witnessed two megatsunamis in Sep 2023, and the waves got caught in a fjord, a narrow inlet. The water kept crashing between the cliffs, triggering a global earthquake.

Scientists have successfully observed for the first time two megatsunamis that shook the world for nine days in 2023. The global seismic signal was recorded every 90 seconds. It was only after a year that the cause was revealed to be two megatsunamis in a remote East Greenland fjord. However, it was merely a theory till now, as no proof of the event had been found. Even a Danish vessel that visited Greenland three days after the first seismic signal did not see the megatsunami waves. Now, using the new Surface Water Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite, launched in December 2022, scientists have captured evidence of the Greenland megatsunamis, according to observations made using the SWOT satellite published in Nature Communications. Waves got caught in a narrow inlet in Greenland In September 2023, a glacier in Greenland, bearing the brunt of global warming, triggered two landslides.
Two timeline scenarios of the big one were taken into account - one that would hit today and the other in 2100.
In the year 2100 scenario, sea levels along the Cascadia subduction zone could be up to three feet higher than today. This means that the effects of future earthquake-driven subsidence would be three times greater.

Dura says the rise in sea levels and earthquake-driven subsidence will delay rescue and relief efforts for those affected by the quake itself. "Long-term effects could render many coastal communities uninhabitable,” Dura added.

The soil will become extremely saline, affecting cattle grazing and farming. Natural systems that act as a buffer against storm surges, like coastal estuaries, intertidal wetlands and protective dunes and beaches, will also be irreversibly eroded.

Dura and her team are studying ancient earthquakes. Their research suggests that over the last six to seven thousand years, 11 great earthquakes have hit approximately every 200 to 800 years in the Pacific Northwest. The last time this happened, 1.5 to 6.5 feet of land along the coastline sank.

The effects of climate change have now extended to something rather surprising: the world's blood supply. A new study shows how extreme weather can slow down blood donations, disrupt blood transport, and even make transfusions unsafe.

Warmer temperatures increase the need for blood while reducing supply

Extreme weather disasters, increasing as the planet warms, can curb blood donations while increasing demand, a new analysis found.

Gothenburg in Sweden is putting its green credentials to the test with a bold financial move. The city took out the world's first sustainably linked loan back in 2022. Now, this loan isn't just a money game—it's a commitment to environmental and social improvements. The city has set ambitious targets, including switching to renewable energy, electrifying its vehicle fleet, reducing energy used in municipal buildings, and improving life in the city's underserved neighborhoods.

A new study has found that the island of Hawaii is fast sinking.
A study published in the journal Communications Earth & Environment studied subsidence on the island of O’ahu and found stark differences in the rate at which the island was sinking in different parts. Some areas of the island had a subsidence rate of around just 0.6 millimeters per year. However, some regions are sinking 40 times faster than expected, going down a staggering 25 millimetres per year.

"In rapidly subsiding areas, sea level rise impacts will be felt much sooner than previously estimated, which means that we must prepare for flooding on a shorter timeline," UH Manoa’s Kyle Murray, lead author of the study, said.
