Typhoon Yagi (known as Severe Tropical Storm Enteng in the Philippines), was a tropical storm in September 2024 in Southeast Asia and South China.
Yagi was the first super typhoon—classified as category 5—of the annual typhoon season and was the most powerful storm ever to hit Northern Vietnam. It was also the strongest typhoon to batter Hainan during the meteorological autumn, surpassing all others since the devastating Rammasun in 2014.

On May 24, 2024, a devastating landslide struck Papua New Guinea's Mulitaka. The massive landslide buried thousands under the debris. While the official death toll stands at 640, estimates suggest that there might actually have been over 2,000 fatalities.
The landslide, as per some theories, was caused by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred on May 18, 2024. However, the Red Cross blamed gold mining or heavy rainfall in the region for the disaster.

Wayanad landslides

Year in review: From floods in Afghanistan to Typhoon Yagi, the deadliest natural disasters in 2024

As the year comes to an end, the United Nations has urged the world to pull back from the road to ruin, warning that climate change sparked a trail of extreme weather and record heat in 2024. The UN's weather and climate agency has said that the outgoing year is set to be the warmest ever recorded, capping a decade of unprecedented heat. Watch in for more details!

Top 10 Hottest Years On Record Have Happened In Last 10 Years: UN

Climate change sparked a trail of extreme weather and record heat in 2024, the United Nations said on Monday, urging the world to pull back from the "road to ruin".
The outgoing year is set to be the warmest ever recorded, the UN's weather and climate agency said, capping a decade of unprecedented heat.
Meanwhile emissions of greenhouse gases grew to new record highs, locking in more heat for the future, the World Meteorological Organization said.
"Climate change plays out before our eyes on an almost daily basis in the form of increased occurrence and impact of extreme weather events," WMO secretary general Celeste Saulo said.

"This year we saw record-breaking rainfall and flooding events and terrible loss of life in so many countries, causing heartbreak to communities on every continent.
"Tropical cyclones caused a terrible human and economic toll, most recently in the French overseas department of Mayotte in the Indian Ocean.
"Intense heat scorched dozens of countries, with temperatures topping 50 degrees Celsius (122 degrees Fahrenheit) on a number of occasions. Wildfires wreaked devastation."

Climate breakdown

The 2015 Paris climate accords aimed to limit global warming to well below two degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels -- and to 1.5C if possible.
In November, the WMO said the January-September mean surface air temperature was 1.54C above the pre-industrial average measured between 1850 and 1900.
That puts 2024 comfortably on course to surpass the record set in 2023.
Last year temperatures were 1.45C hotter than before the industrial revolution, when humanity started burning large amounts of fossil fuels.

The WMO is set to publish the consolidated global temperature figure for 2024 in January, with its full State of the Global Climate 2024 report to follow in March.
In his New Year message, UN secretary general Antonio Guterres reflected on the record temperatures witnessed over the past decade.
"Today I can officially report that we have just endured a decade of deadly heat. The top 10 hottest years on record have happened in the last 10 years, including 2024," he said.
"This is climate breakdown in real time.
"We must exit this road to ruin -- and we have no time to lose," he said.
"In 2025, countries must put the world on a safer path by dramatically slashing emissions, and supporting the transition to a renewable future.
"It is essential, and it is possible."

UN report highlights extreme weather and heat fuelled by climate change in 2024

The Earth almost appears to be sending a distress call to limit planetary global warming. The world experienced an average of 41 additional days of extreme heat in 2024 due to the climate crisis. The impact of human-caused global heating was far worse for some people, as revealed in a study by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) and Climate Central. Watch in for more details!

Climate crisis exposed people to 6 weeks of dangerous heat: Report

From tiny and impoverished Mayotte to oil-rich behemoth Saudi Arabia, prosperous European cities to overcrowded slums in Africa, nowhere was spared the devastating impact of supercharged climate disasters in 2024.
This year is the hottest in history, with record-breaking temperatures in the atmosphere and oceans acting like fuel for extreme weather around the world.
World Weather Attribution, experts on how global warming influences extreme events, said nearly every disaster they analysed over the past 12 months was intensified by climate change.
"The impacts of fossil fuel warming have never been clearer or more devastating than in 2024. We are living in a dangerous new era," said climate scientist Friederike Otto, who leads the WWA network.

Heat

That was tragically evident in June when more than 1,300 people died during the Muslim hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia where temperatures hit 51.8 degrees Celsius (125 degrees Fahrenheit).
Extreme heat -- sometimes dubbed the 'silent killer' -- also proved deadly in Thailand, India, and United States.
Conditions were so intense in Mexico that howler monkeys dropped dead from the trees, while Pakistan kept millions of children at home as the mercury inched above 50C.
Greece recorded its earliest ever heatwave, forcing the closure of its famed Acropolis and fanning terrible wildfires, at the outset of Europe's hottest summer yet.

Floods

Climate change isn't just sizzling temperatures -- warmer oceans mean higher evaporation, and warmer air absorbs more moisture, a volatile recipe for heavy rainfall.
In April, the United Arab Emirates received two years worth of rain in a single day, turning parts of the desert-state into a sea, and hobbling Dubai's international airport.
Kenya was barely out of a once-in-a-generation drought when the worst floods in decades delivered back-to-back disasters for the East African nation.
Four million people needed aid after historic flooding killed more than 1,500 people across West and Central Africa. Europe -- most notably Spain -- also suffered tremendous downpours that caused deadly flash flooding.
Afghanistan, Russia, Brazil, China, Nepal, Uganda, India, Somalia, Pakistan, Burundi and the United States were among other countries that witnessed flooding in 2024.

Cyclones

Warmer ocean surfaces feed energy into tropical cyclones as they barrel toward land, whipping up fierce winds and their destructive potential.
Major hurricanes pummelled the United States and Caribbean, most notably Milton, Beryl and Helene, in a 2024 season of above-average storm activity.
The Philippines endured six major storms in November alone, just two months after suffering Typhoon Yagi as it tore through Southeast Asia.
In December, scientists said global warming had helped intensify Cyclone Chino to a Category 4 storm as it collided head-on with Mayotte, devastating France's poorest overseas territory.

Droughts and wildfires

Some regions may be wetter as climate change shifts rainfall patterns, but others are becoming drier and more vulnerable to drought.
The Americas suffered severe drought in 2024 and wildfires torched millions of hectares in the western United States, Canada, and the Amazon basin -- usually one of Earth's wettest places.
Between January and September, more than 400,000 fires were recorded across South America, shrouding the continent in choking smoke.
The World Food Programme in December said 26 million people across southern Africa were at risk of hunger as a months-long drought parched the impoverished region.

Economic toll

Extreme weather cost thousands of lives in 2024 and left countless more in desperate poverty. The lasting toll of such disasters is impossible to quantify.
In terms of economic losses, Zurich-based reinsurance giant Swiss Re estimated the global damage bill at $310 billion, a statement issued early December.
Flooding in Europe -- particularly in the Spanish province of Valencia, where over 200 people died in October -- and hurricanes Helene and Milton drove up the cost, the company said.
As of November 1, the United States had suffered 24 weather disasters in 2024 with losses exceeding $1 billion each, government figures showed.
Drought in Brazil cost its farming sector $2.7 billion between June and August, while "climatic challenges" drove global wine production to its lowest level since 1961, an industry body said.

Year 2024 saw devastating impact of supercharged climate disasters

Many people dream of a white Christmas, but unfortunately, we may have to become used to a sodden Christmas instead due to climate change. Driven primarily by humanity’s mass burning of fossil fuels, that decline in days below freezing threatens tourism, the economy, and cultures. But how does climate change impact white Christmases?

Are the chances of a white Christmas changing?

As climate change reshapes the world, its impact on Christmas celebrations is becoming increasingly evident. From snowy landscapes to tropical warmth, extreme weather patterns are altering how people experience the holiday season.

In traditionally cold regions, warmer winters are diminishing the chance of a white Christmas, making once-popular activities like ice skating less feasible. For instance, skiing in the Swiss Alps and other winter destinations has been delayed consecutively this year due to insufficient snow, highlighting the broader effects of rising temperatures.

White Christmas turns ‘green’ in some countries

For instance, this year, like many places across the world, Christmas in the UK is unlikely to be a white one, as milder temperatures and shifting weather patterns continue to impact traditional winter conditions. Experts attribute the lack of snow to the broader effects of climate change, which is causing warmer winters and unpredictable weather events across the globe. The UK has experienced relatively high temperatures for December, with the Met Office forecasting above-average warmth throughout the festive period. While snowfall is still possible in some regions, it remains unlikely, especially in southern parts of the country, where rain and frost are more common than snow. In recent years, the frequency of “white Christmases” in the UK has been decreasing, a trend that experts warn could become more pronounced as global temperatures rise. The changing climate is also affecting other winter activities, such as skiing in the Scottish Highlands, which has faced delays due to insufficient snow.

Christmas on Thin Ice: How climate change is reshaping holiday traditions

Climate change is increasingly impacting Christmas traditions, from snowy celebrations to festive foods. Rising temperatures are turning white Christmases into green ones, while “Christmas typhoons” are becoming more frequent in places like the Philippines, which has seen a rise of more than 200% since 2012. Christmas trees, too, are struggling, with warmer weather causing them to turn brown earlier.

Food and drink, staples of the holiday season, are also affected. Climate change is altering the flavour profiles of popular items like Sriracha sauce, beer, and coffee, impacting their taste and availability. For example, coffee production in regions like Brazil is suffering due to unpredictable weather patterns, with droughts and excessive rainfall reducing the quality and yield of coffee beans.

Foggy mornings and snowy peaks, says the IMD

As India and the world are celebrating Christmas and the New Year approaches, Himachal Pradesh has become a popular destination for tourists seeking a winter retreat. The state's stunning hills are now a winter wonderland. These extreme weather conditions are expected to persist until Thursday, posing challenges for both tourists and locals, drawing visitors from all over India. However, the recent snowfall has caused road disruptions, including the closure of key national highways. Major tourist spots like Shimla, Manali, Kullu, and Dharamshala are witnessing a surge in visitors, with snow-covered landscapes being the primary attraction. The tourism sector has been significantly affected, with hotel occupancy in Shimla rising to over 70% and room bookings increasing by 30% following the snowfall. The picturesque scenes of snow-covered streets and hills have gone viral on social media, bringing even more tourists to the region.
Apart from Himachal, Kashmir also has severe winter conditions, with fresh snowfall in the higher reaches and temperatures plunging well below freezing. Srinagar recorded a low of minus -7.5 degrees Celsius, while other areas like Pahalgam and Gulmarg reported even colder temperatures. The extreme cold has caused water supply lines to freeze and ice to form on water bodies. The region is currently experiencing 'Chillai-Kalan,' the harshest winter phase, expected to last until December 31. The Meteorological Department has forecast further temperature drops, worsening the already intense winter conditions.

Not-So-Winter Wonderland: How climate change is melting the magic of northern India’s Christmas

Due to climate change, snowfall patterns have become increasingly unpredictable. A 2019 study by the IMD revealed a 40% decrease in snowfall in key hill stations like Shimla and Manali over the past 50 years, and warmer temperatures have made it less likely for these areas to experience consistent snowfalls during the Christmas period. As a result, while a white Christmas remains a possibility in certain northern regions, it is not a reliable event, with decreasing snowfall observed over the years.

Southern India is bearing the brunt, too!

Climate change is affecting Christmas in Southern India by bringing higher temperatures, unpredictable rainfall, and more extreme weather events. The usual cool December weather is warming, with temperatures increasing by 1-2°C in several areas. Unstable rainfall and severe storms, including cyclones and floods, disrupt outdoor festivities and travel. Additionally, changing climate patterns impact local agriculture, raising the cost of essential holiday ingredients. Coastal tourism is also at risk due to rising sea levels and erosion. These shifts are making the Christmas season less reliable and altering the traditional festive experience in Southern India.

The region is currently experiencing 'Chillai-Kalan,' the harshest winter phase, expected to last until December 31. The Meteorological Department has forecast further temperature drops, worsening the already intense winter conditions. Not-So-Winter Wonderland: How climate change is melting the magic of northern India’s Christmas Due to climate change, snowfall patterns have become increasingly unpredictable.

Hoping for a white Christmas: Well, it's turning green!

Many people dream of a white Christmas, but unfortunately, we may have to become used to a warm Christmas instead due to climate change. Driven primarily by humanity's mass burning of fossil fuels, the decline in days below freezing threatens tourism, the economy, and cultures. But how does climate change impact white Christmases?

New Delhi, India
Climate change is a term that has become increasingly common over the years. With many heatwaves, natural disasters and extreme weather conditions being attributed to the climate crisis, it is hard to ignore its grim presence in our lives. But what does it mean exactly?

What is climate change?

Climate change is a long-term shift in the weather patterns and temperatures globally. While it can also happen naturally, human activities like the burning of fossil fuels have been the driving cause of it since the 1800s.
According to the United Nations, the average temperature of the Earth’s surface has surged by 1.2 degrees Celsius. Experts have warned of limiting global temperature rise to not more than 1.5 degrees Celsius to prevent catastrophic environmental impacts, with various international agreements and frameworks in place, such as the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, projections based on current global policies indicate the Earth could experience warming of up to 3.1 degrees Celsius by the end of the century.

Extreme weather events wreaked havoc globally

The year 2024 saw deadly natural disasters fueled by climate change. Increasingly frequent heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, droughts and floods left thousands dead and millions affected with damages in billions.
The Atlantic hurricane season recorded 18 named storms, including 11 hurricanes–five of which were Category 3 or higher. Deadly hurricanes Beryl, Debby, Helene, and Milton claimed over 330 lives and caused damage costing hundreds of billions of dollars.
More than 670 people died in Papua New Guinea after an earthquake and landslide hit northern parts of the country. Floods and landslides also wreaked havoc in Southern Brazil killing nearly 60.
In Afghanistan and Pakistan, more than 300 people died in May when flash flooding damaged or completely destroyed at least 6,000 homes after heavy rainfall.
In southern India, landslides in Kerala followed by torrential rain resulted in nearly 400 deaths in the Wayanad district. Super typhoon Yagi killed nearly 600 people in Southeast Asia in September. Flash floods in southeast Spain and western Europe in late October resulted in over 200 deaths.
Climate change also increased droughts, torrential rainfall, and heat that damage crops resulting in food shortages, increased prices and losses for the agriculture industry globally.

Deadly heatwaves claimed lives across the world

While natural disasters resulted in an increased death toll this year, heatwaves across the Earth were felt by the majority of people during the summer of 2024.
Most parts of the world experienced record-high temperatures and heatwaves that claimed thousands of lives, although the exact number cannot be determined.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation, the global mean surface air temperature was 1.54 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial average from January to September.
July 22 marked the hottest day on Earth after the global average temperature reached a record high of 17.15 degrees Celsius, according to NASA, the previous record being 17.09 degrees Celsius observed a day earlier on July 21.
Hundreds of deaths have been reported across Asia due to heatwaves, with people most impacted in countries including India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar after experiencing temperatures well above 40 degrees Celsius for several days due to climate change and El Niño effect.
A report released by HeatWatch claims that India recorded over 700 deaths and over 40,000 heatstroke cases attributed to climate change.
According to reports, over 1,300 people lost their lives during the Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia in June after temperatures soared to 52 degrees Celsius.
Similar trends were seen in Western African countries like Nigeria and Ghana which witnessed an increase in patients with heat-related illnesses after temperatures recorded over 40 degrees Celsius in February. Australia also experienced an intense heatwave that affected several areas of the country with temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius.
Southern and Southeastern nations of Europe recorded over 19 deaths due to a heatwave after several regions recorded scorching high temperatures, especially in Greece and Italy, where most fatalities were recorded.
Southern and Western regions of the United States were severely hit by heatwaves, recording over 1,000 deaths, with the hottest temperature recorded at 54 degrees Celsius at Furnace Creek, Death Valley.
Mexico recorded over 150 deaths that could be linked to heat-related illnesses.

2024: A wake-up call

The number of lives lost due to just weather events directly is alarming. Many other innocent lives are lost due to climate change indirectly when it takes the form of deadly illnesses such as heart diseases, respiratory diseases due to air pollution, stroke, cancer and many other leading causes that can be linked to climate change.
The year 2024 should be a wake-up call for governments, policymakers, and us as individuals. Climate change is a pressing issue and we need to look for solutions that can only be addressed by global cooperation and commitment.
Global bodies and governments should implement strict environmental measures like transitioning to renewable energy sources and reducing greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels.
Although this requires significant investments, we cannot ignore the immediate need to adapt to sustainable solutions and technologies to reduce our carbon footprint.
Looking back at 2024, if we don’t take urgent actions, one day our planet may not be fit for humanity to live on.
Every life matters. Every action counts, even at an individual level.

The Larnoo area in South Kashmir recorded the temperature at minus 9.1 degrees. The tourist resort of Pahalgam recorded the minimum temperature at minus 8.2 degrees while the Shopian district was the coldest in the valley at minus 10 degrees Celsius. The World-Famous Ski resort in North Kashmir's Baramulla district recorded the minimum temperature at minus 6 degrees and Sonamarg Tourist resort saw the night temperature dip to minus 9 degrees.
South Kashmir's Pulwama district recorded the minimum temperature at minus 9.5 degrees. Bandipora was at minus 7.3 and Baramulla was at minus 5.9 degrees.
Ladakh region has been battling the cold wave as well. The Leh town recorded the temperature at minus 11.8 degrees, while Kargil was at minus 13.8 degrees. The coldest place in North India was Zojila with temperatures dipping to minus 24 degrees.
The MeT Department of Kashmir Valley has attributed the weather condition to the La Nina effect which means cooler than average sea surface temperatures across the central and eastern Pacific. This weather change mostly impacts the wind circulation patterns leading to more rains and snow.
The MeT department has predicted the winter period to prolong and be very harsh in terms of temperature, rains and snow. As we head towards the 'Chillai Kalan, which is the coldest period of 40 days starting December 21, the La Nina effect will multiply the impact of cold and precipitation in the valley.
The Met Department has predicted generally dry weather till December 21. There are chances of snow from 21 December, but the weather will again be dry from December 23 which means a further dip in the temperature.

India: Kashmir faces severe cold wave conditions; Srinagar records season's lowest temperature at -6.2°C

New Delhi, India
2024 was undoubtedly a nightmare for allergy sufferers. Climate change has led to unpredictable temperatures and smoke-filled cities, pushing allergy seasons to new extremes.
Let's analyse why 2024 was a perfect storm for allergies and what is next.

How does climate change fuel allergy seasons?

Climate change is reshaping and changing the allergy seasons worldwide. The ideal condition for plants to generate more pollen is created by rising temperatures and increased carbon dioxide levels.
Also read | 11 Indians die from carbon monoxide poisoning at Georgia’s Gudauri mountain resort, probe underway
Recent research indicates that certain allergic plants, such as ragweed, are now releasing pollen for much longer periods, which makes those sensitive to it suffer for a longer time.

Record-breaking temperatures and their impact on allergies

Extreme hot summers have been recorded for the last few years, with very huge consequences for allergic patients. The year 2024 is one of the warmest years on record, with temperatures reaching extreme highs on the globe. These extreme temperatures have thereby hastened the growth of plants, particularly due to the heat island effect in urban areas.
Additionally, dry landscapes caused by high temperatures made it easier for dust and pollen to fly into the atmosphere. All allergy patients claimed that they experienced worse symptoms, from watery eyes to asthma attacks, due to the extended exposure.

A trigger for allergens: Unpredictable weather patterns

Except for the temperature, 2024 welcomed a series of storms and dry spells that did a lot to disturb the entire ecosystem with sudden floods of allergens. Flooding left a pool of stale water and debris of dead plants around which thrived mold spores.

Meanwhile, dry and windy conditions spread allergens over larger areas. Nandini, a 22-year-old, says, "In November, my allergies were relentless. The rise in pollution made my health even worse. I could not escape the mold inside or the pollen outside."

Air pollution and it's role in aggravating allergies

In November 2020, the maximum AQI reported was 518. In 2021 November, the maximum reached 700. In 2022, it was 555, and 528 in 2023. But the highest was reported in November 2024, when the AQI reached a record high of 795.
Numbers are telling a death story. On Diwali 2024, Delhi recorded its 24-hour average AQI as 330, higher compared to previous years, and in fact, the most polluted Diwali in the last three years.
And it didn't stop there. November 2024 saw AQI levels consistently reach hazardous levels. Hospitals were overwhelmed by patients with pollution-related illnesses, and many residents, especially those having pre-existing respiratory conditions, had a hard time breathing.
On November 14, GRAP Stage 3 was activated, which wasn't put into the more severe Stage 4 restrictions until AQI increased to 400 on November 18.
25-year-old Palak says, “My allergies turned into constant coughing and sneezing, even air purifiers didn’t help. My skin also suffered a lot.”
Mehar, an asthma patient, said, "The hazardous air of 2024 unleashed a hell for my allergy. Cough, sneezing, and congestion were like a never-ending thing."

Why allergy seasons are getting longer every year

Climate change makes pollen seasons start earlier and last longer. In some regions, pollen counts were observed in November 2024, a month that is typically free of allergens.
Scientists attributed this shift to warmer winters and frosts that delay the plants' dormancy, allowing them to continue producing allergens. If left unchecked, this trend could indicate nearly year-round allergy seasons in the coming decades.

Asthma rise: A silent crisis of 2024

Allergies and asthma go hand-in-hand, and it is one of the years in which there was an increase in asthma attacks. This time, with pollen, pollution, and smoke all contributing factors, it was experienced by those who never had one. Experts say this will continue unless climate change is stopped
The connection between climate change and worsening allergies is no longer a distant concern. This is a reality we are living by. 2024 has shown us that inaction costs us not just melting glaciers and increasing sea levels, but also our health that we are losing, the air we breathe, and the lives that are affected by seemingly insignificant things like allergies.
The question now is no longer how are we adapting, but how far are we willing to protect ourselves and our coming generations. Addressing the situation is not just about saving the country or planet, it is saving our health, ourselves, and where every breath feels like a battle we have to fight for.
So, should we act, or will we let the seasons grow longer, the air grow heavier, and the suffering worsen? The choice is ours, but the clock is ticking.

Climate change and allergies: Why 2024 was worse for allergy sufferers

Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia attended a memorial mass on Monday to honor the 230 victims of catastrophic floods that ravaged the eastern region of Valencia. The royal couple had previously visited the area, where they faced frustration from locals who expressed anger over perceived delays in government aid by pelting them with mud. Their return aimed to show solidarity and support for the affected communities while paying tribute to those who died in the tragedy. Watch to know more!

Three-quarters of Earth’s land has become permanently drier in the last three decades, according to a recent research by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), which was published on Monday, December 9.

According to the report, drylands now make up 40 per cent of the world’s land, excluding Antarctica. Those areas have turned from humid regions to arid ones, where agricultural activities are no longer possible.

Drylands are regions where most of the rainfall water is lost to evaporation, while only a small 10 per cent is left for the vegetation. According to the study, two-thirds of the land on earth will retain less water by midcentury.

The scientists discovered that the growing aridity between the years 1990 and 2015 in Africa has resulted in a 12 per cent loss in its GDP. In particular, some crops like maize are significantly affected, with yields projected to be halved in Kenya by 2050.

It is predicted that in the next half decade, Africa will see a decline of 16 per cent of its GDP while Asia will witness about 7 per cent.

“Unlike droughts—temporary periods of low rainfall—aridity represents a permanent, unrelenting transformation,” said Ibrahim Thiaw, executive secretary of the UN convention to combat desertification (UNCCD).

“Droughts end. When an area’s climate becomes drier, however, the ability to return to previous conditions is lost. The drier climates now affecting vast lands across the globe will not return to how they were, and this change is redefining life on Earth.”

A global conference under the UNCCD in Saudi Arabia’s Riyadh that will conclude on Friday, December 13, is halfway through. Despite being one of the world’s most arid countries and a driving force for desertification across the world, Saudi Arabia has shown reluctance till now, including at the UN framework convention on climate change conference of the parties (Cop) in Azerbaijan the previous month.

According to the report by UNCCD Science-Policy Interface (SPI), the UN body for assessing the science of land degradation and drought, human-caused climate change is the primary driver of this shift as the world fails to tackle the greenhouse gas emissions, intensive agriculture, and other human activities. This leads to warming of the planet and affects the rainfall, plant life, and evaporation, leading to increased aridity.

As of 2020, about 30 per cent of the world’s population, which is 2.3 billion people, lived in dryland areas, according to UN SPI. By 2100, the number is expected to double if the carbon emissions are not controlled.

As climate change continues to be a significant problem worldwide, the representatives of vulnerable nations told judges at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that a handful of countries should be held legally responsible for the ongoing impacts of climate change.

Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu’s special envoy for climate change and environment, was speaking during a hearing at the Peace Palace in The Hague on Monday and said that the responsibility for the climate crisis falls with a "handful of readily identifiable states" that had produced the vast majority of greenhouse gas emissions, however, stood to lose the least from these impacts.

Regenvanu further said that Pacific islands such as Vanuatu have been dealing with the brunt of rising sea levels and increasing frequent and severe disasters, adding, "We find ourselves on the frontlines of a crisis we did not create."

In March last year, the UN General Assembly unanimously approved a resolution, calling on the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on what obligations states have to tackle climate change and what the legal consequences could be if they fail to do so.

In the next two weeks, the international court will be hearing statements from 98 countries with the greatest historical responsibility for climate emergence, including Russia and Britain.

The ICJ will also hear statements from the states that have contributed very little to global greenhouse gas emissions, however, still stand to face the impact of climate change, including Bangladesh and Sudan as well as Pacific island countries.

Further, the world's biggest emitters, the US and China, will also make statements.

Regenvanu told the court that states continue to emit huge amounts of greenhouse gases even though there have been "increasingly dire warnings" from scientists saying that the emissions had increased by over 50 per cent since 1990.

Meanwhile, Ilan Kiloe, the legal counsel for the Melanesian Spearhead Group, a regional subgroup that includes Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and Vanuatu, said, “The harsh reality is that many of our peoples will not survive.”

Kiloe added that the climate crisis threatened the right of states to self-determination and that the injustice of climate change was inseparable from colonialism, which these countries had been subjected to by “a few readily identifiable states”.

Climate change hearings open at ICJ, court told handful of countries responsible for climate crisis

At COP29 in Azerbaijan, a global climate conference designed to combat climate change, hypocrisy took centre stage.

Over 65 private jets—double the number from last year—ferried attendees to the event, including wealthy celebrities and corporate moguls.

This isn’t just ironic; it’s a stark display of the gaping disconnect between the climate crisis and the elites who perpetuate it.

As world leaders and activists discuss reducing emissions, those attending such events are increasing theirs by the minute, flying private jets emit up to 500 times more carbon dioxide per person than commercial flights.

The global aviation industry, notorious for its massive carbon footprint, is one of the largest contributors to climate change.

Yet, the private jet sector, representing just 0.003 per cent of the world’s population, accounts for an outsized portion of those emissions.

The rich are flying in their carbon-intensive planes, using the same platform that calls for urgent action on global warming.

From high-profile events like a COP to the 2022 FIFA World Cup, the pattern is clear: major international gatherings attract private jet fleets, fuelling the very environmental destruction they purport to address.

In a world where cutting emissions by 42 per cent by 2030 is deemed essential to limiting warming, the irony is nauseating. Celebrities like Taylor Swift, and Kylie Jenner, and even corporate giants like Jeff Bezos are under fire for their extravagant carbon footprints.

The business of climate activism is booming, yet the real movers—those benefiting from such events—remain firmly detached from the reality they claim to be solving.

The hypocrisy is glaring.

At a time when businesses and governments are scrambling to reduce emissions, the so-called climate champions continue to live lavishly, fuelling the fire they vow to extinguish.

Until the elites take genuine action, the fight against climate change remains a well-funded farce.
