India and the US have emerged as the top performers among the G20 nations in implementing climate policies, an analysis by the Guardian has found. The G20 economies over the past nine years introduced several policies aimed at curtailing CO2 emissions following the 2016 Paris Agreement. Thanks to the steps taken so far by nations like India and the US among others, the world will now reduce CO2 discharges by 6.9 gigatons by 2030, according to a report by Climate Action Tracker.

However, efforts by these nations were still not enough to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius to 2C above preindustrial levels.

In a major achievement, the CO2 emissions are now projected to return to 2015 levels by the end of this decade. In contrast, previous studies showed that the CO2 emissions would rise by 20 per cent between 2015 and 2030.

Leonardo Nascimento, an analyst at Climate Action Tracker, was quoted by Guardian as saying that this was a major silver lining. “This is nothing to brush off. This is a major improvement in the group of countries covering more than 80% of global emissions,” Nascimento added.

India and US top performers among G20 nations in meeting climate goals: Report

With the COP29 summit in Baku ending in two days, climate activists have gathered at the United Nations climate summit to call for a new deal. That will provide significantly more funding for vulnerable countries. Have a look...

COP29: Climate Activists Demand 'New Deal' In Baku

The G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro ended on Monday (Nov 18) with leaders failing to resolve key deadlocks in UN climate negotiations, as geopolitical tensions, particularly the war in Ukraine and Donald Trump's return to the US presidency, overshadowed discussions.

Climate commitments falter

Ahead of the summit, the UN had called on G20 nations to rescue stalled climate talks in Azerbaijan by pledging greater financial support to developing countries grappling with the devastating effects of global warming. However, there were no concrete commitments, as G20 members remained divided on who should pay.

The summit's final communiqué vaguely stated that the required funding would come "from all sources" without specifying contributions.

Criticism follows

Mick Sheldrick of Global Citizen criticised the leaders' inaction, noting, "The leaders are kicking the can back to Baku".

"This is probably going to make it harder to achieve an agreement," he told AFP.

Ukraine war escalation

The war in Ukraine dominated discussions, as the US' recent controversial policy shift authorising Kyiv to use long-range missiles on Russian territory, risks escalating the conflict. Russia has already warned of an "appropriate response" if its territory is targeted.

The impending return of Donald Trump — known for his isolationist "America First" policies — has cast uncertainty over global diplomacy. As US President Joe Biden attended the summit as a lame-duck leader, China's President Xi Jinping positioned himself as a stabilising force, calling for "no escalation of wars, and no fanning of flames."

Addressing the tensions in the Middle East, the G20 in a statement called for "comprehensive" ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.

Brazil's push for social justice

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sought to steer discussions toward combating global hunger and inequality. He launched the centrepiece of his G20 presidency: a Global Alliance Against Poverty and Hunger with the support of 82 nations, and set an ambitious target to feed 500 million people by 2030.

The summit also advanced a pledge to "engage cooperatively" to ensure the ultra-wealthy pay their fair share of taxes.

G20 summit ends in Rio with no progress on climate

Pacific leaders at the UN climate summit in Azerbaijan are criticising Australia's push to expand its gas industry in Western Australia, warning it could emit 125 times more greenhouse gases annually than their nations combined.

As the second week of Cop29 unfolds in Baku, officials from Vanuatu and Tuvalu urged Australia to halt new fossil fuel developments, including extending the lifespan of Woodside's North West Shelf gas facility to 2070.

A call for accountability

Ralph Regenvanu, Vanuatu's special envoy for climate change, accused Australia of hypocrisy, saying it cannot claim climate leadership while expanding fossil fuel projects.

"As the world’s third largest fossil fuel exporter, the Australian government is exporting climate destruction overseas, including to Pacific nations like Vanuatu, who experience the most devastating impacts of the climate crisis, despite contributing the least."

"This is climate injustice," he stated.

Regenvanu pressed Australia to uphold its commitment from last year's Cop28 in Dubai to transition away from fossil fuels.

Maina Talia, Tuvalu's climate change minister, echoed these concerns, highlighting that limiting global warming to 1.5°C is not just a number but a "lifeline for Pacific communities facing rising seas, accelerating extreme weather disasters and the erosion of our cultures".

"We will continue to keep industrialised countries accountable for their actions... Our future lies solely in their hands," he said.

Australia and Cop31

Australia is lobbying to co-host Cop31 in 2026 with Pacific countries, competing against Turkey.

While Pacific nations back Australia’s bid for what’s being dubbed "the Pacific Cop," leaders, including Tonga's and Palau's, stress it must prioritise lifting commitments to cut emissions and support the most vulnerable in the region, reports The Guardian.

Speaking in Azerbaijan, Tuvalu's climate change minister Talia remarked, that co-host Cop31 would be "an exciting opportunity to accelerate ambitious climate action in our region".

India on Tuesday (Nov 12) emphasised the need for a carbon market mechanism at the annual COP29 climate negotiations currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan. India called for a mechanism that doesn’t create trade barriers, while also pitching a recalibration of climate finance under the updated goals. The New Collective Quantified Goal (NCQG) asks developed nations to offer annual climate finance for climate action projects in developing countries.

India also called on developed nations to provide financing that is “adequate, predictable, accessible, grant-based, low-interest, and long-term”. New Delhi also stressed the need to establish carbon market mechanisms under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement that utilise carbon credits to incentivise low-carbon development, without creating barriers to trade.

World’s top banks vow $120bn aid to poorer nations

The world’s largest multilateral development banks (MDBs) on Tuesday meanwhile introduced a climate financing scheme, pledging $120 billion to poorer nations by the year 2030.

This marks a significant hike from the $75 billion raised in 2023 and a mere $60.9 billion raised in 2022 by the MDBs.

Earth is heating up and climate change is threatening its existence. But, we might not be the only world in the cosmos to inflict this horror upon ourselves. As per a new model, an advanced alien civilisation can destroy its planet because of climate change in less than 1,000 years. This, the researchers say stands true even if they are using renewable sources of energy.

The new research has been posted to the preprint database arXiv and is being peer-reviewed.

The study touts that any civilisation that is experiencing massive technological growth and energy consumption, would heat up its planet and make it uninhabitable in less than 1,000 years. This is irrespective of its energy sources, since no matter what they use, there would be inevitable leakage in the form of heat, as predicted by the laws of thermodynamics.

The scientists conducting the study noticed that human energy use had witnessed a major increase since the 1800s. In 2023 alone, about 180,000 terawatt hours (TWh) of energy was used, almost the same amount of energy that hits Earth from the sun.

Gas and coal are the major sources of this energy, and are heating up the planet. However, even if wind and solar power were creating this energy, the planet would continue to become hotter since the population would also keep increasing, consequently pushing up the demand for more energy.

Planets will always eventually heat up

Manasvi Lingam, an astrophysicist at Florida Tech and a co-author of the study, told Live Science that the team applied the second law of thermodynamics to this problem. According to this law, no energy system is perfect and some amount of energy will always escape the system. This escaped energy will cause a planet to heat up over time.

The team found that as this energy leakage builds up more and more, the planet will eventually overheat to a point where it is no longer habitable. More and more energy creation will lead to disastrous levels of climate change and only needs less than 1,000 years from the start of energy production.

Scientists also cite this as a reason why they cannot find life elsewhere in the universe. They say that 1,000 years pass in the blink of an eye in cosmic terms, considering planets like Earth take hundreds of millions of years to become habitable.

So what is the solution?

The team suggests a civilisation should choose equilibrium and flatline its growth. Living in "harmony with its surroundings", a species and its descendants "could survive maybe up to a billion years," Lingham said.

A new Volcanic era has emerged in Southwest Iceland and upended many lives in its wake. Despite the violent and long-lasting nature of these eruptions, it might hold the key for a new future. An audacious plan is underway to drill directly into a magma chamber, hundreds of miles Northeast at a volcanic caldera called Krafla. This is to source clean energy that can power people’s lives.

Iceland's Volcanoes Erupt After 800 Years: A New Source for Clean Energy?

U.S. nonprofit Climate United unveiled plans on Tuesday to invest up to USD 250 million in what would become America's largest single purchase of electric semi-trucks. The ambitious project aims to deploy as many as 500 zero-emission vehicles over the next three years, specifically targeting California's bustling port operations.

The program addresses a critical environmental mandate: California's requirement that approximately 33,000 drayage trucks—vehicles that transport containers to and from seaports—must achieve zero tailpipe emissions by 2035. Climate United's intervention comes at a crucial time, as electric heavy-duty trucks currently represent less than 1% of the total U.S. trucking fleet.

Beth Bafford, CEO of Climate United, emphasised the economic barriers facing smaller operators: "High upfront costs make it difficult for independent owner-operators and small fleets to transition to all-electric." The initiative aims to overcome this obstacle by offering attractive lease rates to truckers serving California's ports, making the transition to electric vehicles more financially feasible for smaller operations.

The Maryland-based nonprofit has outlined a clear timeline, with initial orders scheduled for the first quarter of 2025. In a move that aligns with domestic manufacturing priorities, Climate United will prioritise Class 8 trucks assembled in the United States using domestically produced components.

Several manufacturers are already active in this space, with companies like Volvo Trucks North America, BYD, and Kenworth currently operating electric trucks at California ports, including the nation's busiest seaport complex in Los Angeles and Long Beach. This existing presence provides a foundation for the program's expansion.

The initiative's funding comes from a substantial USD 6.97 billion grant provided by the National Clean Investment Fund, operating under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund established by President Joe Biden's Inflation Reduction Act. This significant financial backing demonstrates the federal government's commitment to accelerating the transition to zero-emission vehicles in the commercial sector.

A crucial aspect of the program is its partnership with Forum Mobility, which is developing charging infrastructure at California ports and along major freight routes. Jacqueline Torres, a vice president at Forum Mobility, highlighted the significance of this coordinated approach: "For so long, this has been the story of the chicken and the egg. You can't have the trucks before you have the charging, and you can't have the charging before you have the trucks. This program brings both of those together."

The initiative addresses multiple challenges simultaneously: the environmental impact of port operations, the financial barriers to electric vehicle adoption, and the need for comprehensive charging infrastructure. By providing both the vehicles and ensuring access to charging facilities, the program offers a holistic solution to the complex challenge of decarbonizing port operations.

This investment comes at a critical time for California's ports, which play a vital role in national and international commerce while contributing significantly to local air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. The transition to electric drainage trucks could substantially reduce both local air pollutants and carbon emissions, improving air quality in port-adjacent communities while advancing climate goals.

The scale of this investment could also help accelerate the broader adoption of electric heavy-duty vehicles by demonstrating their viability in demanding port operations. Success in this environment could encourage similar transitions in other sectors of the trucking industry, potentially catalysing a wider shift toward zero-emission commercial vehicles.

The United Nations released a report on Thursday stating that the current climate policies of all countries will result in an increase in global warming of more than 3 degrees Celsius by the end of this century.

The report also mentioned that the increase in global warming is twice the rise which was agreed to nearly ten years ago. The annual Emissions Gap report released by the UN keeps an account of the promises made by countries to control climate change compared with what is actually needed, stating that global temperature could rise by 3.1 degrees celsius above pre-industrial levels by 2100. This also shows the government’s shortfall in the commitment to control the climate.
