India is losing sunshine hours, and this trend has greatly increased in the past three decades. A study done by Indian scientists shows that since 1988, the Sun's date with India has been on a downward trend, thanks to the cloud cover and the increasing number of aerosols in the air. The Banaras Hindu University, Pune-based Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) collaborated on a study that studied data from 1988 to 2018. The monthly sunshine hours (SSH) analysis from 20 meteorological stations and from nine regions showed that the annual sunshine hours in India have been consistently declining. The research was published in the journal Nature on October 2. The study noted that there was a "persistent decline of SSH in the Indian subcontinent on all temporal scales, excluding the north eastern region, where mild seasonal levelling off was found." Meanwhile, there was a "significant increment from October to May followed by significant drops from June to July in six regions, except the northern inland and Himalayan region that showed comparatively opposite monthly trends." Previous studies have found decreasing trends in solar radiation across India and a persistent solar dimming in the 21st century. The researchers blame this on the rising aerosol levels, which went up because of urbanisation in the early 1990s.Also Read: WATCH | Mount Everest and Himalayan range visible from Bihar town in stunning occurrence
India did not take timely steps to control aerosols in environment
The study notes that during the 1990s, "India’s economic growth drove urbanisation, land-use changes, and industrialisation, leading to increased fossil fuel consumption, vehicular emissions, and biomass burning." India was not the only country to undergo changes in the early 90s, with China and Japan also witnessing similar changes. However, the two countries implemented policies to control aerosol pollution. Switzerland’s glaciers have recorded their fourth-largest ice loss on record, melting 3% of their total volume in just one year.
A lack of snowfall followed by extreme heatwaves caused the sharp melt, according to GLAMOS scientists.
With nearly one-quarter of glacier volume lost since 2015, experts now warn that most low-altitude glaciers could disappear by the end of the century, even if global temperatures stabilize today.
Drone views and field data from the Rhone Glacier and Silvretta Glacier highlight the scale of the crisis.
Scientists say only drastic emissions cuts could save up to 200 high-altitude glaciers in Switzerland.

Nepal is set to launch a five-year Everest clean-up plan in line with a Supreme Court directive, as the world’s highest peak—often dubbed the Earth’s tallest garbage dump—grapples with decades of accumulated waste. Experts warn that the growing piles of trash collected each season highlight the urgent need for sustainable mountaineering practices. Melting ice is exposing long-buried waste and even human remains, further exacerbating the problem of climate change. It also contaminates watersheds and poses a risk to downstream communities, according to a report in the Kathmandu Post. Meanwhile, a draft of the Clean Mountain Strategy (2025–2029), reviewed by the post, allocates Rs 308 million for Everest clean-up efforts, though insiders estimate that the real cost will exceed Rs 1 billion. The plan proposes creating a specialised team of “Mountain Rangers,” composed of climbers, to monitor and manage waste at Everest Base Camp and higher camps. It also suggests exploring the use of drone technology to collect waste above the base camp.
What polluted the Everest region over a decade?
The burden of litter has scarred the Everest region for decades. Several climbers, Sherpas, guides, and porters left tonnes of waste materials that include oxygen canisters, ropes, plastic bottles, kitchen scraps, and human waste, polluting both the slopes and settlements downstream. Plastic poses one of the gravest threats to Everest, as a single plastic bag can take up to 500 years to decompose. If burned, it releases toxins into the air; if buried, it contaminates the soil. With climbing traffic on the rise, plastic waste has steadily climbed to higher altitudes, making Everest a stark emblem of environmental neglect. According to the Nepal Mountain Academy, rope-fixing teams leave behind nearly 400 kg of ladders and nylon ropes each year above the base camp. Buried under snow, these ropes can also remain on the mountain for decades. Meanwhile, the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee collected 85 tonnes of garbage in the 2024 spring season, including almost 28 tonnes of human waste, and the Nepali Army removed another 11 tonnes. In order to reduce mounting pressure, Nepal has exponentially increased climbing fees. The royalty fee per foreign climber via the south route in spring has increased from $11,000 to $15,000 under revised regulations. In addition, climbers will also be required to pay a refundable garbage deposit as well as a non-refundable environmental fee. Part of the climbing revenue will be set aside for clean-up drives, with local communities engaged in the process. The strategy also proposes charging expedition operators a waste management fee, following the “polluter pays” principle. A dedicated Mountain Clean-up Fund will be established, and climbers will be mandated to carry bottles for human waste. Industry experts, however, warn that Nepal is already behind schedule in implementing such measures. “We proposed a $100 non-refundable per climber fee in 2010,” said Dambar Parajuli, president of the Expedition Operators Association Nepal. “Had it been implemented, the fund would have exceeded Rs1 billion by now,” he also said. Similarly, China also introduced this measure in 2014. Parajuli, Everest’s Camp IV, is the most polluted location, which requires enormous resources. “We estimate a minimum of Rs1 billion for five years. But frequent policy changes due to unstable governments have prevented consistent action," he said. The draft strategy proposes stringent measures on equipment and materials, while also pushing to integrate environmental awareness into local curricula and expand such materials nationwide. However, some initiatives are already underway. Climbers above base camp have been required to use poop bags since 2024 under the initiative of the Sagarmatha Pollution Control Committee and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality. Officials say the new plan aims to safeguard Everest’s global standing by aligning mountaineering goals with environmental responsibility. Experts, however, warn that without adequate funding, the mountain may continue to carry the stigma of being the world’s most visible garbage dump.

Scientists have issued a dire warning about the West Antarctic Ice Sheet that is on the verge of collapsing. According to a study, the ice mass that covers around 760,000 square miles of area is weakening, and if it completely melts, the sea levels could rise to such catastrophic levels that several cities across the world will fully submerge. Researchers from the Australian National University warned that the carbon dioxide (CO2) levels will spell doom for many coastal areas. Their analysis shows that when the ice sheet collapses, sea levels could rise by more than 9.8ft. Dr Nerilie Abram, the lead author of the study, said, "Rapid change has already been detected across Antarctica's ice, oceans and ecosystems, and this is set to worsen with every fraction of a degree of global warming." The destruction would be so massive, that it would affect several generations to come. This led to chilling findings that could prove catastrophic for the world. Besides the direct effects, a gamut of "knock–on effects" would be felt, "including making the floating ice shelves around Antarctica more susceptible to wave–driven collapse," Dr Abram said. "The decline in Antarctic sea ice and the slowdown of deep circulation in the Southern Ocean are showing worrying signs of being more susceptible to a warming climate than previously thought," he said, raising concern that a grave scenario could be unfolding. The changes in the amount of solar heat being retained in the climate system will make the Antarctic region even warmer, according to the study. Antarctica: Scientists have warned that a global catastrophe is on the horizon as the West Antarctic Ice Sheet weakens. One of the largest ice masses in the world can collapse and raise sea levels by over 9 feet, submerging entire cities across the world.

Tuvalu, a remote island nation in the Pacific Ocean, is set to become the first country in history to be evacuated entirely because of rising sea levels. With an average elevation of just 6.5 feet above sea level, the nation’s 11,000 residents face an unavoidable future: much of their land and infrastructure is predicted to be underwater by 2050. The government has already signed a landmark agreement with Australia to ensure a planned migration for its people before the ocean claims the islands.
The climate migration plan

Under the Falepili Union Treaty, agreed in 2023, Australia will accept 280 Tuvaluan citizens each year as permanent residents through a ballot-based “climate visa” scheme. The programme opens in 2025, granting recipients the same rights to health care, education, housing and employment as Australian citizens. Demand has been immediate and overwhelming — more than 5,000 applications were submitted in the first month, representing almost half the population. Within just four days of opening, one-third of the nation had registered for the chance to relocate. The migration scheme is designed to be gradual, but if current interest continues, close to 40 per cent of Tuvalu’s population could move to Australia within a decade. Residents will also have the option to return home if conditions allow, though scientists warn that worsening floods and storms will make permanent return unlikely. Tuvalu, climate change, rising sea levels, Pacific islands, global warming, climate migration, Australia climate visa, Falepili Union Treaty, climate refugees, island evacuation, sea level rise, Tuvalu relocation, coastal flooding, climate crisis, environmental migration, disappearing nations, ocean levels, Pacific relocation, climate impact, sinking islands

Tuvalu is made up of nine small coral atolls and islands, home to just over 11,000 people.

The urgency behind the exodus

Tuvalu’s vulnerability stems from a combination of rising sea levels, more intense storms and the loss of freshwater sources to salinisation. According to recent studies, sea levels in the region were already 15 centimetres higher in 2023 than they were 30 years earlier. By mid-century, high tides could submerge much of the country’s habitable land, eroding its cultural and economic foundations. The government has attempted to preserve its heritage through innovative measures such as 3D-scanning the islands, creating a digital record of the nation in case its physical territory is lost. However, this technological safeguard cannot prevent the displacement of its people.
A global warning
Tuvalu is not alone in facing such existential threats. Low-lying nations like the Maldives, Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, Fiji and Vanuatu are similarly at risk. Even wealthier nations, including the United States, face the prospect of relocating communities as rising seas threaten coastal states like Florida and Louisiana. Scientists warn that by 2070, over three billion people worldwide could find themselves living outside the climate conditions that have sustained human civilisation for millennia. Tuvalu’s exodus is a stark demonstration that climate change is no longer a distant forecast but a present reality.

This entire country is being evacuated due to global warming! Have you visited it before?

Earth no longer has only four seasons, with human activity adding two new ones to the annual cycle, scientists have asserted. These are the 'haze season' and 'trash season', which have ruined the ecological system and threaten to wreak more havoc in the coming years. The strange new occurrences also mean that they are causing an adverse effect on public health, marine life, and basically the entire rhythm of our planet. The haze season has become a regular occurrence in Southeast Asia and some other parts, such as India. Every year, a thick smoke blankets the region, comprising chemicals that are hazardous to human health. The air quality has become a widespread concern in this part of the world. In India, every year in the winter season, smog shrouds the northern areas of the country, triggering health issues. The major cause of the haze season is fires that are intentionally set to clear agricultural land. Not only India, but massive burn-offs have also been reported in countries like Indonesia and Malaysia. Global warming has also increased the window of wildfire seasons in regions like California, where the wildfire season now extends from spring to December. This is because of a shift in monsoon winds, which cause ocean currents to carry huge volumes of plastic waste to the beaches. The mounds of garbage are massive and have become so common that locals now know exactly when they will start appearing. A similar trash season also occurs along the US East Coast, where the Gulf Stream pushes debris floating in the ocean towards Florida and the Carolinas. This occurrence is reported mostly around the summer season. The research was carried out by scientists from the London School of Economics and Political Science. They said that the haze season typically starts in Southeast Asia in June and runs through September. The toxic cloud of smoke travels to Singapore, Thailand and other countries beyond them. Meanwhile, "marine pollution seasons are also surfacing, quite literally, as observed on the beaches of Bali, Indonesia," the study reads. In Bali, "floating plastic waste, either washed off the land by heavy rainfall or dumped into the oceans, is blown by strong monsoonal winds onto the southern beaches of the island province from December to March." https://www.wionews.com/videos/heatwave-triggers-wildfires-evacuations-and-storm-alerts-across-the-balkans-wion-1753527540563/embed
Disappearing seasons
Season placements have also changed, and some traditional seasons have also vanished, the researchers said. Regions like the Andes and the Rocky Mountains lack snow, which makes them host winter sports. Seabirds like kittiwakes are not returning to northeast England to breed at their usual times. Then there are "arrhythmic" changes, which mean that spring and summer seasons have shifted out of sync, with one coming early and the other stretching longer than its usual span.

Earth has two new seasons, thanks to humans, who have not only altered the climate with irresponsible acts, but also changed how spring and summer act out. Wildfires and changing currents have added haze in the skies and trash on the beach, the two seasons officially on record.

Earth has two new seasons, and it is not good news for our planet

While global warming is shrinking the world's ice, three glaciers in one of the remotest regions of the world are gaining ice. An astronaut captured them from the International Space Station (ISS), merging into one massive ice mass in the Karakoram mountain range. The Lolofond glacier, the Teram Shehr glacier, and the Siachen glacier are the three glaciers seen merging in the photo and together create the Karakoram anomaly. These glaciers are growing bigger, even though the rising temperatures in the world are threatening glaciers in Antarctica and the Arctic. Scientists have been baffled by the phenomenon for years and have racked their brains, trying to figure out what's going on with them. The Siachen Glacier in the eastern Karakoram is the longest glacier in the Karakoram and second-longest in the world's non-polar areas. It is located 18,875 ft above sea level and is 76 kilometres long and 3.5 kilometres wide at its broadest point. It has undergone some rapid changes which scientists have failed to explain. The photo captured from space shows these moraines, the parallel layers formed from rock and dust trapped between glaciers as they merge. The point where the Teram Shehr and a smaller unnamed tributary glacier meet the Siachen glacier shows the moraines most clearly. In winters, blizzards can continue for weeks here, with temperatures plummeting to -50°C. It is a source of freshwater for several people living near the region. Climate change is causing the glacier to melt. However, the Karakoram anomaly shows that some glaciers are becoming stable and even seeing growth. This could be because of the Western Disturbances that bring snowfall in winter, according to a study. However, a sureshot answer remains elusive.
