Around 45 schoolchildren were not fed for two days in India’s&nbsp;Chhattisgarh state as a form of punishment by the superintendent of a missionary school.

The children were reportedly punished for damaging a football during a game.

According to the Times of India newspaper, the incident took place in Pratappur, around 380 kilometres from the capital Raipur city. The school is said to be under the management of Bishop’s House, Ambikapur.

It accommodates 141 boys and girls, primarily from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, in a hostel with only 21 seats.

The newspaper in its report noted the harrowing living conditions of children in the school and the cramped rooms they are being made to live in.

The matter came to light after a video of locals giving biscuits to hungry children went viral on social media.

The administration was later informed of the matter and ordered an inquiry.

<h2>'Wanted kids to learn to struggle'</h2>

During the investigation, the superintendent, father Peter Sadom, admitted that he didn’t give food to the children, arguing that the kids needed to “learn to struggle”.

“We arrange everything for the kids, yet they break utensils and balls. They should learn to struggle and be punished for their wrongdoing. We did not give them two meals. The allegation of keeping them hungry for two days is wrong,” Sadom was quoted as saying.

When the news reached their parents, they, along with the villagers, stormed the school demanding strong action against Sadom, saying that the kids were not safe under his supervision.

Later, the district education officer submitted the inquiry report to the collector, stating that it corroborates the allegations.

Based on the report, Bishop House suspended Sadom from all activities and responsibilities of the hostel.

The newspaper reported that the child welfare committee will inspect the school and hostel.

India: 45 students of missionary school in Chhattisgarh denied meals for damaging football

A Delhi court on Wednesday sentenced ex-Rajya Sabha MP Vijay Darda, his son Devender Darda, and businessman Manoj Kumar Jayaswal to four years in jail in a case related to irregularities in the allocation of a coal block in Chhattisgarh, saying the convicts obtained the block by cheating the government of India.

All three convicts were taken into custody immediately after the court order.

Special Judge Sanjay Bansal also awarded three-year jail terms to ex-coal secretary H C Gupta and two former senior public servants K S Kropha and K C Samria in the case.

The three convicts were, however, granted bail by the court to enable them to challenge their conviction and punishment before the high court.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 50 lakh on the company, JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd, which was convicted in the case.

The court imposed a fine of Rs 15 lakh each on the Dardas and Jayaswal. The other three convicts were directed to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 each.

The present case relates to allocation of a coal block. The convicts had obtained the said block by committing cheating with the Govt. Of India. Prosecution is justified in saying that the loss to the nation was huge,? the judge said.

In the 13th conviction in the coal scam, the massive scandal which rocked the erstwhile Manmohan Singh government, the court had on July 13 held the seven accused guilty under sections 120-B (criminal conspiracy) and 420 (cheating) of the IPC, and relevant provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act.

During the argument on the quantum of sentence, the CBI had sought the maximum punishment of seven years for the convicts, claiming that Darda and his son had met the then CBI director Ranjit Sinha at his residence to scuttle the investigation.

The Supreme Court had constituted an SIT to investigate the allegations against Sinha of trying to influence the probe in the coal scam cases. Sinha, a 1974 batch IPS officer of Bihar cadre, died from Covid-related complications in 2021.

CBI's senior public prosecutor A P Singh had claimed a witness in the case stated he was threatened by Jayaswal, who tried to influence him to not depose against him.

The court had on November 20, 2014 refused to accept a closure report submitted by the CBI in the case and directed the federal probe agency to investigate it afresh, stating that the former MP had "misrepresented" facts in letters written to the then prime minister, Manmohan Singh, who held the coal portfolio.

The court said Vijay Darda, the chairperson of the Lokmat Group, had done so to secure the Fatehpur (East) coal block in Chhattisgarh for JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd.

The Lokmat Group is a multi platform media company based in Maharashtra.

The court said the offence of cheating was committed by private parties in furtherance of a conspiracy hatched between them and public servants.

JLD Yavatmal Energy Pvt Ltd was allotted Fatehpur (East) coal block by the 35th Screening Committee.

The CBI had alleged in its FIR that JLD Yavatmal had wrongfully concealed previous allocation of four coal blocks to its group companies in 1999-2005, but the agency later filed a closure report, saying no undue benefit was extended to JLD Yavatmal by the coal ministry in allocation of coal blocks.

The scandal had rocket the Manmohan Singh government in 2012 after the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) panned the government for inefficient allocation of 194 coal blocks to public sector enterprises and private companies between 2004 and 2009 for captive use in a non-transparent way.

The CAG said instead of allocating the valuable natural resource, the government should have gone for competitive bidding.

Many politicians were claimed to have lobbied for private entities and helped them secure these blocks. Several entities got more blocks for mining than they needed and sold the excess coal in the open market resulting in huge windfall.

The CAG initially estimated a massive loss of Rs 10.6 lakh crore to the exchequer, but its final report tabled in Parliament put the figure at 1.86 lakh crore.

Coal scam: Delhi court awards 4-year jail to ex-MP Vijay Darda, son for cheating

An Indian official has been slapped with a fine of $640 (Rs 53,092) by the government after he recently ordered to drain a reservoir in the Chhattisgarh state to find his lost phone — an incident that happened a few days back. The official&nbsp;Rajesh Vishwas was posted at Pakhanjur town in Kanker district as a food officer, and he now faces allegations of misusing his position.&nbsp;

He was suspended on May 26 after he allegedly asked that water from a reservoir be pumped out to retrieve his lost phone which had fallen down while taking a selfie.

Media reports have mentioned that around two million litres (440,000 gallons) of water was drained out for a phone worth about $1,200. The water of the Kherkatta Dam was emptied in over two days&nbsp;starting&nbsp;Tuesday.&nbsp;

Vishwas’ suspension was confirmed by Kanker Collector Priyanka Shukla, who said as mentioned by media reports: "The official had no authority to drain the water. Hence, he has been suspended."&nbsp;

Shukla said, "He has been suspended until an inquiry. Water is an essential resource and it cannot be wasted like this."&nbsp;

India: At least 11 killed in Chhattisgarh car-truck collision

A home theatre music system, which was received as a gift at a wedding reception, turned out to be a bomb that killed two and injured five in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. The incident reportedly happened earlier this week in Chamari village of Kabirdham district.&nbsp;

Chhattisgarh Police claimed that they have solved the case as they revealed that the music system had explosives which blew&nbsp;up when it was plugged into power.&nbsp;

The police said that the victim has been identified as Hemendra Meravi, who got married to Lalita Marwari (22). The wedding ceremony was organised in Chamari village on April 2.

A day after the function, police said that the family members started unwrapping the gifts they had received.&nbsp;

According to ASP Manisha Thakur, who is the investigating officer, said: "As soon as Meravi tried to connect the music system to an electronic socket and switched it on, an explosion occurred, killing him on the spot."&nbsp;

As quoted by media reports, Thakur revealed that the suspect, identified as Sarju Markam, was detained on Tuesday. Markam is reported to be a resident of Madhya Pradesh's Balaghat district.&nbsp;

The investigating officer also said, "During the&nbsp;questioning, the accused confessed to having planted explosives in the music system and gifting it to the newlyweds. We are yet to ascertain from where he got explosives and other details of the case."&nbsp;

Some reports have mentioned that Markam was Lalita's ex-boyfriend. The police also said that during the questioning, it was found that Meravi's wife was in constant touch with Markam.&nbsp;

The officer said that Meravi's brother succumbed to injuries during treatment in the hospital. The other injured people of the same family were rushed to a nearby hospital and are under treatment. "Condition of those injured in the explosion is said to be stable," the ASP added.&nbsp;

CRPF commando killed, seven injured in IED blast in Chhattisgarh

Twenty-seven Naxalites, five of them carrying cash rewards on their heads, surrendered in Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh on Sunday, saying they were impressed by the police's rehabilitation drive and disappointed with the Maoist ideology, an official said.

The district police's campaign named 'Lon Varratu' (return to your home/village), launched in June this year for the rehabilitation of Naxalites, is yielding positive results as 177 ultras have so far surrendered under it, he said.

"In the latest case, altogether 27 cadres, including six women, turned themselves in before senior police and CRPF officials at Barsoor police station in the district," Dantewada Superintendent of Police Abhishek Pallava told PTI.

Of them, 11 cadres are natives of Gufa village, seven from Bedma, five from Mangnar, three from Hitawada and one from Handwada, he said without disclosing their identity citing security reasons.

These ultras were active as members of Dandakaranya Adivasi Kisan Mazdoor Sangthan (DAKMS), Krantikari Mahila Adivasi Sangthan (KAMS)- frontal wings of Maoists, Chetna Natya Mandli (CNM-cultural offshoot of Maoists) and jan- militia groups, Pallava said.

"All of them were allegedly involved in attacks on police teams, triggering IED blasts and putting up Maoist posters and banners.

Five of them carried rewards of Rs 1 lakh each on their heads," he said.

In their statement they said, they were disappointed with the "hollow" Maoist ideology.

They also said that the recent surrender by their colleagues as a part of 'Lon Varratu campaign of local police also encouraged them to quit violence, he said.

Each of them was given immediate assistance of Rs 10,000 and will be provided facilities further as per the government's surrender and rehabilitation policy, Pallava added.

Under the 'Lon Varratu' (term coined in local Gondi dialect) initiative, Dantewada police have put posters and banners in the native villages of at least 1,600 Naxalites, mostly carrying cash rewards on their heads, and appealed them to return to the mainstream.

The issue of conduct of NEET-JEE exams has found itself in legal tussle. After Supreme Court declined to entertain pleas for postponement of NEET and JEE exams, six ministers of Opposition ruled states have approached the top court for a review. These ministers from states of West Bengal, Punjab, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand have filed a review petition.

The petition, filed through advocate Sunil Fernandes, seeks postponement of exams slated to be held in September in light of coronavirus pandemic.

"Failed to balance the competing but equally important aspects of conducting the examination and securing safety of the student. Fails to ensure that mandatory safeguards are put in place during the conducting of the examinations," said the petition challenging the August 17 order. This has been cited by news agency IANS.

"The advice of `Life Must Go On` may have sounded very philosophical underpinnings but cannot be a substitute for valid legal reasoning and logical analysis of the various aspects involved in the conduct of the NEET (UG) and JEE exams," the petitioners have argued.&nbsp;

The petitioners say that Central Government had ample time to set up at least one exam centre per district to conduct the examinations.

The petitioners say that Central Government had ample time to set up at least one exam centre per district to conduct the examinations. × "Having at least one centre per district would have minimised the inter-district long travel of the students and thereby reduced the chances of Covid-19 spread," says the petition. Terming the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020 as "harmful" for the poor and farmers, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has urged the Centre to put the proposed bill on hold for the time being, considering the current situation in the country.

In his letter written to Union Minister of State for Power RK Singh, the Chhattisgarh Chief Minister said that the Electricity Amendment Bill 2020 proposed by the Central Government is harmful to the lower strata of the society as the provision of cross-subsidy in the proposed bill is "impractical" and not in the interest of farmers and poor.

Baghel said the farmers will face crisis regarding irrigation of crops if the subsidy on electricity given to farmers is not continued and this will affect the production of food grains and the country will face a crisis. Therefore, the present provision of giving electricity subsidy to the people and farmer of the poor section of the society is tested and according to the need of the hour, he added.

The Chief Minister said that the labourers and farmers, who have made the country self-reliant in food with their hard work, should be respected. He said it is necessary to give concession to people and farmers of the poor section of the society to make them self-sufficient and competent.

Baghel urged all state governments to consult and take care of the interests of the poorer sections of the society and the common people before implementing the amendment bill prepared by the Union Ministry of Power.

The Chief Minister said that the Direct Benefit Transfer System, which is currently in force, is correct. By changing this, the poor section of the society and small and marginal farmers will be deprived of benefits. The Chief Minister said that if a farmer consumes one thousand units of electricity for irrigation of crops every month during the farming season, then he will have to pay a bill of seven to eight thousand rupees, which will be impossible for him to pay.

He said the reduction of the rights of the State Governments and the appointment of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission under the Union government through this amendment is contrary to the system of a federal structure.

The bill provides only advice to states regarding the formation of the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the consent of the state is not necessary in relation to the appointment. This provision is a clear violation of the powers of the State Government, the statement said.

The Electricity Amendment Bill 2020 provides for the promotion of privatisation in the field of electricity. Under this, there is also a provision for the appointment of sub-licensees and franchisees.

This provision is against the policy of checks and balances as sub-licensees and franchisees are not obliged to take licenses from the regulatory commission. From this, it is clear that it is also contrary to the principle of right and duty, the statement added.

"When you make a decision, the whole universe conspires to make it happen," is a famous quote which we have heard or read multiple times during our lifetime. Who can justify this adage better than Ashish, who despite all odds, is the sole breadwinner for his family.

Hailing from Balrampur in Chhattisgarh, Ashish was born without limbs since birth, but he works as a computer operator at a Panchayat office and is continuing his higher studies. &nbsp;

"I have passed my class X examination. I earn Rs 10,000 per month but my home is 15 kms away, so I come to the office driving my scooter," Ashish said.&nbsp;
