Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara was dismissed on a low score on Day 2 of the World Test Championship final against New Zealand at Rose Bowl in Southampton. He scored just 8 runs off 54 balls and was dismissed by Neil Wagner.

South African pacer Dale Steyn felt that Pujara could have played freely and rotated the strike better. Cheteshwar Pujara played just two scoring shots out of 54 deliveries he faced. These shots were back-to-back boundaries off Wagner.

"You want to see somebody like Pujara. Now he faced 50 balls and we know that this is kind of player that he is. But I'm sure if he looked back and looked at the sample of video analysis, he would find that there are deliveries there where he could have created the opportunity to maybe rotate a little bit more strike. I saw something come up and it was like 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 4, 4, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 and then a wicket. I'm sure in all those 50 balls, he could have rotated strike and just gotten that scoring to nudge on a little bit for himself and as well as his team." Steyn said on ESPNCricinfo.

According to Steyn, Indian batters must keep rotating strikes as they resume the play on Day 3. Despite Pujara walling cheap, India mamanged to score 146/3, with Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane holding the fort currently.

"India would be happy that they haven’t lost as many wicket but they want to be able to keep that scoreboard ticking and keep that rotation going. These are clichés of the game but they all do matter," added Steyn.

Cheteshwar Pujara's performance in the Australia tour earned him a lot of praise. He stood like a wall in front of the best Australian bowling attack, especially during the fourth Test at the Gabba. Pujara suffered multiple blows but stood tall and scored a gritty 56 runs that proved vital in Team India's win against the Aussies.

Australian opener Marcus Harris, recently, recalled the brave knock played by Pujara at the Gabba and said that he batted "like an Australian".

“The final day was amazing to watch. We were thinking the whole day if they would go for the runs or not. I think Rishabh played the best innings that day, but for Pujara to be copping an absolute barrage from everyone, it felt like he batted a bit like an Australian, taking everything on the chest and getting on with it. The rest of the team just batted around him," Harris said on ‘Cricket Life Stories’ YouTube channel.

However, former Indian opener Wassim Jaffer took a dig at Harris' comments and tweeted: "Wonder why the Australians didn't bat like Australians."

Harris even lauded Pant for his "unbelievable" innings that helped Team India breach the fortress of Gabba.

“Rishabh Pant’s innings was unbelievable. Everyone says he has magic in him, and he has showed that a few times now. It was disappointing to lose the series but sometimes in cricket you just have tip your hat and say they were too good for us," Harris signed off.

'I am lucky that I will be playing under Mahi bhai': Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of IPL 2021

Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara on Saturday said that the pitch for the second Test played against England in Chennai was not "dangerous" at all while adding it players find it difficult to score runs when the ball spins. Pujara was even asked about the IPL 2021 auction, where he was signed by Chennai Super Kings.

India defeated England by 317 runs in the second Test in Chennai to level the series 1-1. Now the focus shifts to Ahmedabad, where the last two Tests of the series will be played at the world's largest stadium – Motera.

While there are still a few days to go before one could analyse the pitch in Ahmedabad, former players like Michael Vaughan and Mark Waugh termed the Chennai pitch as poor.

"Sometimes you know when you are playing on a turning track, you find it difficult but at the same time, it was not a dangerous pitch at all. When the ball spins you know people find it difficult to score runs, especially the overseas teams. When we go overseas and we play on seaming tracks, the game finishes in three or four days. We still have to play on such wickets where there is a lot of grass or seam movement," Pujara told a virtual press conference on Saturday.

"In turning tracks, one cannot define how much the ball can spin. It is a very thin line in that way. I do not think it was a bad pitch, it always becomes difficult in the second innings, this is how it is. When we play in Australia, there are cracks on day four and five, it is a little dangerous, the oddball hits the crack and it might take off. As a team I do not think we had any issues, once opposition teams start playing more on these pitches, they will be fine," he added.

Pujara was recently signed up by Chennai Super Kings for the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League for his base price. However, Pujara was all set to play County cricket in a bid to prepare for India's tour of England later this year. Now, with both IPL and County season clashing, Pujara said that he always wanted to play the shorter format of the game and will take a call on County cricket once the IPL gets over as he will have a small window to play some matches in England after the end of the cash-rich tournament.

"First of all, I am really glad to be a part of the IPL, it is good to be back again. I would like to thank the CSK team for picking me, but at the same time, when I am talking about county cricket, I still think I will have enough time before we play England in England. At times, he might have looked ugly while watching him on TV, but he played his role sensationally. He batted superbly. There was no sense of fear in us," he told the Times of India. Shardul, who made a comeback into the Indian Test squad, made an instant impact as he wreaked havoc with the ball while also playing a crucial knock of 67 runs at the Gabba. Shardul ended up with seven wickets to help India defeat Australia by three wickets and conquer the fortress call the Gabba.

Shardul Thakur all praise for 'warrior' Cheteshwar Pujara after India's historic show in Australia

Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara earned a lot of praise for his performance in the famous Gabba win against Australia in Brisbane. The batsman scored brave knock of 56 runs in 211 balls (his slowest-ever Test half-century) helped batsmen like Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant to swing their bats freely.

Despite suffering blows from Australia's world-class pace attack, Pujara stood his ground in order to not lose a wicket and put the visitors under pressure. Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, in particular, led the short ball brigade, as Pujara was hit on different parts of the body at least 10 times.

"From my early days, I am not in the habit of taking pain- killers. That’s why my threshold to bear pain is pretty high. You play for so long, you get used to getting hit," Pujara told Indian Express.

"I mostly got hit from one end and that too against (Pat) Cummins. There was this crack on the pitch around the short- of-length spot from where the ball would just take off. Cummins has the skill to make the ball rear up from there and make it follow you. In case I took my hand up to defend it, there was a risk that I would glove the ball. Considering the match situation and how we couldn’t afford to lose wickets, I decided to let the ball hit my body."

During the knock, the ball struck Pujara's finger. The particular blow made batting difficult for the Indian batsman. "It is tough to hold the bat, the grip was slightly loose. So you can’t hit the ball where you want to," he explained.

He talked about the series win and said: "That time (2018-19) it was the first win in Australia but this one is really special."

Former Australian legend Tom Moody talked about Pujara's batting and said his style doesn’t do anything to threaten the bowler or throw him off guard, which in turn, allows the bowler to settle due to which he is struggling in the on-going series.

“One observation I have with Pujara… there’s no question about his quality, he’s a very fine Test batsman. But one thing I will say is that his style of play allows the bowler to hone in on a dinner plate and remain in that competitive length and line, where another proactive batsman is reversing the pressure back on the bowler and they are finding it hard to find a dinner plate,” Moody said on ESPNCricinfo.

“There’s a small sort of window on a very good length and line. So Pujara is never quite forcing a bowler like Hazlewood to or a Pat Cummins off that length because he is resolute on his defence. And if they are allowed to stay in there, the ball is going to just bounce a little bit more, seam a little bit more and his bat is going to be sitting there for that.”

Moody went on to talk about how many Indian batsmen, including Pujara, threw away a good start and how Thakur and Sundar's partnership saved the day for the visitors.

“They were saved by the partnership between Thakur and Sundar. If the partnership hadn’t evolved, we’d be talking about the fact that the top order all got starts, except for Shubman Gill and failed to cash in on what was a pretty good batting surface,” Moody mentioned.

“I think we’ve seen today how a good a surface it was at the Gabba and to get a start as a top-order batsman in a Test match and get yourself in and not convert to something substantial, is something you do kick yourself for and a number of the top-order batsman did that through some indifference strokeplay and you have to give credit to the Australian bowlers.”

Sydney Test: Pant, Pujara fall as Australia claw their way back on final day

Australian bowlers are countering Cheteshwar Pujara`s patience with patience in the ongoing series against India with fast bowler Pat Cummins revealing that they have planned to frustrate him and the Indian batting by drying up his run-scoring even if it requires bowling 200-300 balls in an innings at him.

Cummins`s spell of four for 29 in India`s first innings of the third Test on Saturday included the wicket of Pujara, who had scored three centuries on way to aggregating 521 runs at 74.5 on the previous tour in 2018-19 and had earned man of the series award. This time though, the India No. 3 has struggled and made just 113 runs in five innings so far at an average of 22.6.

"You know he is going to hang around a bit. As long you are controlling the scoreboard... if we continue to keep bowling well and field tightly, we are not overly bothered," Cummins told reporters after the match.

"I think we have got ahead of him in this series. For him to score runs we are going to make it as hard as possible. Whether he bats for 200, 300 balls we try and bowl good ball after good ball, challenge both sides of his bat. Fortunately it has worked so far," Cummins added.

The Australia pacer, who is ranked No. 1 in the world, recalled a stage from the third day`s play on Saturday when he looked up at the scoreboard only to find to his pleasure that India have not moved.

"I think at one stage he had been out there for 150 balls or so. I remember looking up at the scoreboard and saying they are still 200 runs away from our first innings total. So that fell a long away," added Cummins.

Cummins`s wicket of Pujara came in the second session as the Aussie pacer bowled a back-of-the-length delivery that reared up from a wicket that was deteriorating. He says he was lucky to get the ball to jump.

"For that one today, I seemed to get assistance from the pitch. It seemed to jump up a little but he is someone you know you have to bowl a lot at," added the India top-order batsman.

Cummins said he was hoping at the start they don`t have a long day and was happy to see Indian bowlers bowl three days in a row.

"At the start of the day, I was hoping that we don`t end the day still having to bowl. With a 200-run lead, eight wickets in hand with the wicket deteriorating quickly, it is a great result. Also getting their bowlers back on, they have now bowled three days in a row, those things all add up," added Cummins.

The Aussie pace bowler added that he is bowling with a good rhythm and has great control on the ball.

"It is right up there, the rhythm feels really good. It just feels like I have got pretty good control not just on where the ball is landing but I guess the seam movement as well. I feel like I have beaten them in and out a lot more than I have in the past. Hopefully this continues," he said.

Australia reveal success mantra against Pujara: Wear out his patience

Ahead of the four-match Test series between India and Australia, all eyes were on the Cheteshwar Pujara, whose batting prowess left Aussie bowlers on their knees last time India toured Down Under in 2018-19. Pujara was the highest run-scorer in the series with 521 runs but the Indian Test specialist didn’t look at his best in Adelaide Test where he managed to score just 43 and a duck.

Australian spin great Nathan Lyon has said that the hosts have more surprise in line for Pujara in the remaining three Tests.

"I can't reveal secrets, to be honest with you. But, obviously, Pujara is a world-class batter and he is going to be a big challenge for us for the rest of the series," 33-year-old Lyon said at a virtual press-conference on Wednesday.

"We spoke about him (Pujara) in depth before the series started, it was good to see a couple of plans come off in Adelaide, but we have got a couple more things.

Lyon further said that it is always fun to take on the best batsmen in the world with Pujara being one of them.

"So, hopefully, if he does get in, we can put into ploy...it is always fun challenging yourself against the best players in the world and Pujara is definitely one of those guys," added the senior spinner – who is nine wickets shorts of completing 400 wickets in the five-day format.

After a gritty 43 in the first innings, Pujara was send packing for a duck in the second innings with Indian getting bundled out for 36 – their lowest-ever Test innings score.

Without Virat Kohli, the responsibility will be on Pujara and stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane to take the majority of load of scoring runs against Australia. India will be without the likes of Kohli and Mohammed Shami (injured) for the remainder of the Test series vs Australia as massive task awaits for the visitors.

Nathan Lyon fires warning for Cheteshwar Pujara ahead of Boxing Day Test

Australian cricketer Shane Warne is being criticised for referring to Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara as Steve. Did Warne not realise he was being racist?

Gravitas: How Cheteshwar Pujara became 'Steve'

Legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne on Thursday found himself in a bit of controversy while doing his commentary duties for Fox Cricket on Day 1 of the Adelaide Test between India and Australia. Warne, who was in the commentary box, referred Pujara as ‘Steve’ and the name has left many fans in anger.

Pujara was given the nickname ‘Steve’ during his County stint with Yorkshire. The Indian batsman had once revealed that his Yorkshire teammates found it tough to pronounce his name ‘Cheteshwar’ and gave him the name ‘Steve’. However, it was recently reported that the nickname ‘Steve’ had a racist angle.

In December, County club Yorkshire launched a thorough investigation into alleged racism after cricketer Azeem Rafiq lodged a case against the club alleging racism. A Yorkshire employee named Taj Butt had even alleged that the name ‘Steve’ was used as a reference to “every player of colour”. Butt had left his job at Yorkshire club as the community development officer just six weeks after joining them.

"There were continuous references to taxi drivers and restaurant workers when referring to Asian community," Butt had told ESPNCricinfo.

"They called every person of colour 'Steve'. Even Cheteshwar Pujara, who joined as an overseas professional, was called Steve because they could not pronounce his name."

Warne had referred Pujara as Steve and had a laugh with his colleagues but the move left fans unimpressed by the spin great.

"They called every person of colour 'Steve'. Even Cheteshwar Pujara, who joined as an overseas professional, was called Steve because they could not pronounce his name." Warne had referred Pujara as Steve and had a laugh with his colleagues but the move left fans unimpressed by the spin great. Here's how fans reacted to Shane Warne referring Cheteshwar Pujara as 'Steve': Referring to Pujara as ‘Steve’ is: a) unprofessional b) disrespectful c) racist Learn to say his name — Siddhartha Vaidyanathan (@sidvee) December 17, 2020 × Shameful to hear Fox commentators call Pujara "Steve" even after it was allegedly kept as a racist remark at Yorkshire. Disgraceful! #AUSvIND — Madhusudhan (@kmadhu0) December 17, 2020 × And Pujara has actually voiced he doesn't like being called Steve. — JackBo ManHorse (@basedIITian) December 17, 2020 × Calling Pujara “Steve” because you cannot pronounce his first name is simply racist. #AUSvsIND @ShaneWarne — broskijo (@broskijo2) December 17, 2020 × @ShaneWarne mate you need to apologise to Pujara, laughing at Steve as a nickname is racist just because you can't say his name. Ffs do better. — Krizztorpha (@krizztorpha) December 17, 2020 × I am amazed by how nonchalantly these Aussie commentators endorse racism. You cannot call Cheteshwar Pujara @cheteshwar1 ' Steve' NO! And It's part of your job to learn how to pronounce names. Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara on Thursday scripted a unique record against Australia in Test cricket, surpassing the likes of Joe Root, Alastair Cook and Virat Kohli, during the first Test at the Adelaide Oval.

Pujara, who was Man of the Series, the last time India visited Australia in 2018-19 continued his rich run of form in the longest format of the game as he blunted the new pink-ball against Australia by facing 160 deliveries in his 43-run knock on Day 1 of the Adelaide Test.

By facing 160 deliveries, Pujara registered his name in the record books as he became the player to have faced most deliveries in Test cricket against Australia in the past decade.

Sunil Gavaskar, India's former batting legend, wants Pujara to be left alone and said no one should be telling India's no.3 how to get runs in Australia. During the 2018/19 series, Pujara was the lead run-getter with 521 runs from four matches at an average of over 74.

“Pujara should be allowed to play the game he knows best. That’s what got him here. You don’t tamper with a player’s natural aptitude or temperament. Like you never told Sehwag how to play, nobody should be telling Pujara how to get runs as long as he is getting the runs and the hundreds,” said Gavaskar during an interaction on the Sony network.

“If he is let alone and no pressure is put on him, that’s going to work in India’s favour. He is so rock steady, the others can score around him and play shots,” the former India captain added.

Other than Pujara, Rahane and Rohit will have the responsibility with the bat.

Vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane is likely to lead the team after Kohli's departure. Rohit Sharma has also been added to the squad. Last season, Pujara was successful against Australia as he smashed 521 runs. KL Rahul has had a successful IPL season. The KXIP skipper was the Orange Cap holder.

Captain Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane were not out on 59 and 23 respectively as India finished the day with 174 runs for the loss of three wickets.

This is the first pink-ball Test match played by either of the nations and the inauguration of this iconic match was done by Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina earlier in the day. Earlier, India's lethal pace-trio ensured that the visitors didn't even manage a modest score after Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque won the toss and decided to bat first.

When India came out to bat, last match's double centurion Mayank Agarwal and his opening partner Rohit Sharma did not trouble scorers much and India were reduced to 43-2. But skipper Kohli and Pujara's partnership of 94 runs ensured that India were on course of a clean sweep.

Bangladesh really struggled against the display of quality fast bowling as only three batsmen were able to touch a double-digit score and three dismissed for nought. Shadman Islam was the top-scorer from the Bangladeshi side with 29 runs followed by Liton who was retired hurt on 24.

While batting, the visitors dealt with double blow when Liton Das and Nayeem Islam made an exit from the game following hits on the helmet from Shami. Ind vs Ban 2nd Test: Hosts finish Day 1 on strong note after pace trio skittles Bangladesh

India completed another crushing victory over the West Indies, demolishing the home side by 257 runs on the fourth afternoon of the second and final Test at Sabina Park in Jamaica on Monday.

Set the improbable target of 468 late on day three, the home side tumbled in the post-lunch session, losing their last six wickets for 51 runs as they were dismissed for 210 to hand Virat Kohli's side a clean sweep of a Test series in the Caribbean for the first time ever.

This result also completed a 100 percent record for the tourists in all completed matches played on this tour. The 2-0 Test series triumph followed a 3-0 success in the T20 Internationals and a 2-0 victory in the One-Day Internationals, with one match ruined by rain.

Pacer Mohammed Shami and spinner Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets each as the Indians once again had too many varied weapons for the home side.

Shamarh Brooks completed a maiden Test half-century but it was little consolation for West Indies captain Jason Holder who was last out, bowled by Jadeja for 39 to trigger the Indian celebrations.

"This was pretty comprehensive again for us," said Kohli in assessing his team's dominant performance yet again. "We played good cricket and getting the result in the manner you want is crucial as a team. This is a real collective effort."

Amid the jubilation there was concern for the welfare of key West Indies batsman Darren Bravo, who retired hurt on 23 just 15 minutes into the day's play. He was eventually replaced by Jermaine Blackwood in the team according to the game's new concussion protocol.

Resuming his innings in partnership with Brooks with the score at 45 for two, Bravo appeared to be feeling unwell and was attended to and subsequently led off the field on his own steam.

He was struck on the back of the helmet by fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah during the final over of the third day's play and continued batting for the remaining three deliveries of the day after receiving treatment.

Australian Marnus Labuschagne was the first concussion replacement in the history of the game last month when he replaced Steve Smith during the second innings of the second Test against England at Lord's after Smith was struck on the neck by fast bowler Jofra Archer.

Blackwood was called into duty within minutes of being drafted into the team after Shimron Hetmyer fell to yet another poor shot, caught at extra-cover to give fast bowler Ishant Sharma his second wicket of the innings.

With Bravo and Blackwood both batting in the same innings, it gave West Indies the first 12-batsman Test scorecard under the protocol.

Earlier Roston Chase was the first wicket to fall in the day after coming to the crease when Bravo went off, being trapped leg-before by Jadeja.

Blackwood dominated a 61-run fifth-wicket partnership with Brooks but when the attacking right-hander became Bumrah's only wicket of the innings via a catch at the wicket, it signalled the beginning of the end of the West Indies resistance with Brooks' own carelessness contributing to his demise as he was run out by a direct hit from the effervescent Kohli.

"We've got lots of problems with the batting," said a despondent Holder. "It's a tough question as to how we fix this situation. There is quite a bit of time before our next Test so it's up to the players to take ownership of the situation."

Despite the dominance of the Indian bowlers, it was batsman Hanuma Vihari who earned the "Man of the Match" award for his maiden Test hundred in the first innings, which he followed with an unbeaten half-century in the second to help hasten Kohli's declaration on the third afternoon.

The incident happened during the Ranji final semi-final against Karnataka in Bengaluru when some cricket fans called him a cheater for escaping a few dismissals.

A video of the incident also went viral where a group of spectators can be heard calling shouting cheater while Pujara walks off the ground at the tea break.

Pujara scored an unbeaten 131 to help Saurashtra beat Karnataka by five wickets to set up a summit clash against Vidarbha, to be played from February 3.

Pujara's century went in vain as he didn't get due credit for the victory. He was given not out by the on-field umpire after he nicked a ball straight to the wicket-keeper Srinivas Sharath.

After getting a lifeline in the first innings, Pujara edged one behind in the second innings too when he was on 34. The umpire adjudged him not out.

Watch: Cheteshwar Pujara's century goes in vain after fans call him a 'cheater'

Australia coach Justin Langer said he has never seen a batsman concentrate as hard as India's Test star Cheteshwar Pujara, who beats even the great Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid in that aspect.

India won the four-match Test series 2-1 against Australia with Pujara fetching the man of the series award with a total of 521 runs, including three centuries.

Speaking for the first time since the visiting team's maiden Test triumph on Australian soil, Langer said Pujara's concentration was a challenge for his bowlers.

"...I have never seen a batsman watch the ball as closely as he (Pujara) does, and that includes Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid. His concentration was a challenge. And we have to keep getting better just like him, all our batsmen and bowlers," Langer said.

Langer said his bowlers were stretched to the limit in the Test series, especially in Melbourne and Sydney.

"The guys are working very hard and they are going okay. The first innings in Melbourne and Sydney, honestly, sucked the life out of us because when you are in the field for two days, with only one spin bowler, that takes energy out of the group," he said ahead of ODI series starting Saturday here.

"We have the best spinner and three outstanding pace bowlers, against the outstanding Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli. So it takes some mental and physical energy out.

"There are new players and new staff for these three games, so that brings new energy to the group...," he added.

Australia's fast bowlers drew all-round criticism for failing to be as effective as India's pace battery but Langer backed them. The home team will be missing Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins in the ODI series, who have been rested to manage workloads.

"...They copped some pretty strong criticism throughout the series. But on two very flat wickets they kept running in hard and having a go and in this instance they were beaten by some a brilliant Indian side. We were beaten by a better side," he conceded.

Langer said the challenge is ever present for his side despite a change in format as the Indian ODI team is just as strong as the Test team. Both sides get down to their respective World Cup preparations with the upcoming series.

"After losing in 2001, in 2004 when we finally beat India in India at Nagpur, without doubt that was the Everest moment of my cricket career. So I am sure for most of the Indian players, especially Virat Kohli, it feels the same but when you are at the top, things are on the way down," he warned the visitors.

"They will be very buoyed and excited but we plan to fight for every thing. They have a good one-day team and we are up against it. Let's hope we are better than we were in the Test series," Langer said.
The Australian coach felt his side has the talent but just needs to apply itself a bit more.

"It's the exciting thing, when you lose a series to India, its disappointing but it helps you get better and it's the same where we are at the moment.

"It is an unbelievable opportunity for us in Tests and ODI cricket to get better and we have to do that. We have the talent, now we have to look at the experience and ability, and aspire to do it," he said.

Australia have made an addition to their squad with batsman Ashton Turner coming in for Mitchell Marsh who is suffering from gastroenteritis and is not available for the first ODI.

Australia have recalled off-spinner Nathan Lyon to their ODI squad, and Langer said that this is a move keeping the World Cup in mind, but didn't commit if the hosts would play two spinners in the first match of the series itself.

"Lyon's record in white ball cricket is very good and he is the best spinner in the world. So it would be a waste of opportunity if we don't play him in white ball cricket particularly with the World Cup coming up.

"He is also a gun fieldsman. He is nice and fit, and a gun fielder. I cannot wait to see how he goes and he is also excited about it," he said.
In addition, he spoke about Australia's World Cup preparations, and how they are close to finding the group of players in a bid to retain their 2015 title this summer.

"No one ever feels locked in. We have a clear plan how we will play our one-day cricket between now and the World Cup.

"It will be a great opportunity for Lyon and for our batsmen, as we have 10-15 games before the World Cup. So we will pick our (final) side after that. As always we will look to prepare well and win the World Cup," he said.

"In the next few months we will have a group of players together and build towards the World Cup, for which we have a clear idea of who we would like to have but we will have to wait," he signed off.
