<p>Another accusation that the Italian regulator levelled against ChatGPT is its alleged failure to check the age of its users. It is essential to note that the AI application is supposed to be for individuals above the age of 13.&nbsp;</p>

<p>OpenAI has yet not commented on this latest development clarifying the allegations the Italian regulator has made. The privacy regulator said "the absence of any legal basis that justifies the massive collection and storage of personal data in order to 'train' the algorithms underlying the operation of the platform".</p>

<p>Mesosphere, a layer in the Earth's atmosphere, is said to be a tricky area to study. Mesosphere is too high above for weather balloons and too low for satellites.</p>

<p>The Project Canvas, as the Japanese company's project is called, is going to create the 'meteor shower' by using a pressure driven system of gas tanks, reported BBC.</p>

<p>Naturally occurring meteor shower takes place when Earth moves through a patch of space debris caused by a comet or an asteroid. These&nbsp;particles, when they enter Earth's atmosphere under the gravitational pull, generate heat due to friction. And at this moment they are visible from the surface of the Earth as 'shooting stars'.</p>

<p>In Project Canvas, the satellites will shoot tiny pellets in the Earth's atmosphere at the speed of 8 kilometres per second. It being hoped that studying the path and light emission of&nbsp;these pellets' passage through the mesosphere will enable the scientists to gather more information about the layer of the atmosphere.</p>

<p>The result, for laypersons watching from the Earth's surface,&nbsp;will be an artificial meteor shower.<br />

<p>OpenAI's ChatGPT, when given prompts to take a political side, asserts its supposedly impartial attributes. However, it was found that ChatGPT can still write a political campaign for a figure as polarising as former US President Donald Trump.</p>

<p>According to a New York Times report, when ChatGPT was asked to write a fund-raising email for Republican Party's Donald Trump, it first said, "I cannot take political sides or promote any political agenda."</p>

<p>But when given a prompt to 'help us defeat our Opponents', it immediately came up with a potential Trump-like campaign email.&nbsp;</p>

<p>ChatGPT, when asked to appeal for fundraising to help defeat Donald Trump his opponents, urged its potential receivers: "I need your help to continue our fight against the radical left and their socialist agenda. We cannot let them win."&nbsp;</p>

<p>ChatGPT's above response reflected Trump's wordings from his July 4, 2020 remarks in which the then-US president attacked what he said was 'radical left', at the 'Salute to America' event.&nbsp;</p>

In an open letter on Wednesday (March 29), a group of prominent scientists and other tech industry notables, including Tesla and Twitter&nbsp;owner Elon Musk and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, are calling for a six-month pause&nbsp;on training systems more powerful than OpenAI's newly launched model GPT-4&nbsp;to consider the risks.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter, which has been signed by more than 1,000 people, is a response to OpenAI’s recent release of GPT-4, a more advanced successor to its widely-used AI chatbot ChatGPT.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter has warned that AI systems with “human-competitive intelligence can pose profound risks to society and humanity” — from flooding the internet with disinformation and automating away jobs, to more catastrophic future risks out of the realms of science fiction." The letter added&nbsp;that recent months have seen AI labs locked in an out-of-control race to develop and deploy ever more powerful digital minds that no one – not even their creators – can understand, predict, or reliably control.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The letter also said that powerful AI systems should be developed only once people are confident that their effects will be positive and their risks will be manageable.</p>

<p>The letter further called on AI labs to immediately pause for at least six months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4. “This pause should be public and verifiable and include all key actors. If such a pause cannot be enacted quickly, governments should step in and institute a moratorium,” it added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Who has signed the letter?</strong></h2>

<p>The letter was issued by the Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people including Elon Musk. The co-signatories included Stability AI's Chief Executive Officer Emad Mostaque, researchers at Alphabet-owned DeepMind, and AI heavyweights Yoshua Bengio. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Thursday, the letter was not signed by OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Elon Musk, who also runs Tesla and SpaceX and was an OpenAI co-founder and early investor, has long expressed concerns about AI’s existential risks. Earlier this month, Musk said, "AI stresses me out."</p>

<h2><strong>What has been the response to the letter?</strong></h2>

<p>Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University who signed the letter, said that the letter isn't perfect but the spirit is right — "We need to slow down until we better understand the ramifications." Marcus added the big players are becoming increasingly sensitive about what they are doing which makes it hard for society to defend against whatever harms may materialise, Reuters reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a blog post, Marcus said that he disagrees with others who are worried about the near-term prospect of intelligent machines so smart that they could self-improve beyond humanity’s control. Marcus said he was more worried about “mediocre AI” that is widely deployed, including by criminals or terrorists to trick people or spread dangerous misinformation.</p>

<p>"Current technology already poses enormous risks that we are ill-prepared for. With future technology, things could well get worse," the New York University professor wrote.&nbsp;</p>

<p>James Grimmelmann, a Cornell University professor of digital and information law, said the pause on the AI race is a good idea but the letter is vague and it does not take the regulatory problems seriously.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is also deeply hypocritical for Elon Musk to sign on given how hard Tesla has fought against accountability for the defective AI in its self-driving cars,” Grimmelmann added.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What is GPT-4?</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier this month, OpenAI released GPT-4 which it says exhibits human-level performance. "We’ve created GPT-4, the latest milestone in OpenAI’s effort in scaling up deep learning. GPT-4 is a large multimodal model (accepting image and text inputs, emitting text outputs) that, while less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios, exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks," Open AI's website said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In an online demo on March 14, OpenAI President Greg Brockman ran through some scenarios that showed off GPT-4′s capabilities. Brockman demonstrated how the system could quickly come up with the proper income tax deduction after being fed reams of tax code — something he couldn’t figure out himself, according to a report by the news agency Associated Press.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It’s not perfect, but neither are you. And together it’s this amplifying tool that lets you just reach new heights,” Brockman added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The use of AI indeed presents an exciting way the world would function in knowledge collection and presentation. We wondered how AI would affect higher education offered in India, especially in B-schools. So naturally, we posed this question to ChatGPT.</p>

<p>The results we found were far from satisfactory. We recalibrated the question in multiple ways by adding more specific terms. However, it just rehashed the answer in different ways. So, even though it could not specifically say how higher education will change due to it, we expect it to bring about a tangible change in the education sector.</p>

<p>Rather than thinking of it as a destroyer of education, its capabilities need to be understood, accepted and utilised for the benefit of the students. ChatGPT worked exceptionally well in designing course outlines. We asked it to design a course on investment analysis and portfolio management. It provided us with a pretty comprehensive outline. We then modified the queries to get an outline for the same course for undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students. It could change the outline per the academic requirements of these different academic levels. It also optimised the course outline when asked to design it per the Indian markets and economy.</p>

<p>The AI was also adept at developing session plans based on any topic. It was also clever to modify the plan when provided with different duration of sessions. It would divide the sessions into different sections and also provide sub-topics to be covered in each section. Interestingly, it would also suggest using cases in some of its outputs. We pushed it a bit further and prompted it to provide us with a case on a select topic. It provided the financial details of a firm and suggested some of the analyses that the students could use. It also provided us with a similar case in the Indian context. The AI is also good at providing assignment questions and rubrics to assess them.&nbsp;</p>

<p>AI can help educators in reducing time spent on mundane tasks. It can help the educators in spending more time in preparation for the session and finding interesting tools to assist them in helping students to learn the concepts. AI also opens up the possibilities for schools and colleges in the interiors of the country to have a more rounded view of the topics generally taught in the more prominent institutions. It can help educators in those colleges to develop better course materials and assignment questions for their courses.</p>

When in school, teachers ask students to do mathematical operations without the help of calculators, as those will not be available in the real world. We know that is far from the truth. In higher education, especially in MBA schools, open book exams are regularly conducted, allowing students to take help from books and notes and maybe internet resources in writing their answers.</p>

<p>It removes the requirement for students to rote facts and figures and assess them on their conceptual understanding of a topic or practical approach towards a business problem. AI is just another item in the long list of tools that can help students answer questions. So, the questions need to have greater intricacies and nuances that would need a human factor in answering those questions.</p>

<p>AI can help the students process a large volume of information concisely, and that information can be used as a foundation to arrive at the answer by the students. It will become ubiquitous in the times to come and better with each passing query. The educators would do well to incorporate its utility in their teaching and assessment plans.</p>

<p>However,&nbsp;<em>caveat emptor</em>&nbsp;is something students should keep in mind when using this. There have been numerous reports where AI has given incorrect answers and made up data and references to answer those queries. So, while it would help the students compress the text and the data they need to read to understand the problem, it would still require them to use their minds to filter out incorrect information to give an appropriate answer to the questions asked.</p>

<p>We understand that new technologies have the power to shape the way we teach in higher education. It is no use policing the use of such tools by the students. It is also of no use to make these utilities taboo for them. AI tools would be available for them in the outside world.</p>

<p>The best we can do is to accept these tools and help the students understand how to use them for their purposes effectively. As students are taught the concepts of finance, marketing, strategy, HR and other subjects to help them in their professional careers, the efficient and effective use of AI will also be a skill that will be needed in the armoury of the B-school students when they graduate.</p>

<p>Even though the&nbsp;AI-powered ChatGPT may have bowled over tech enthusiasts across the world with its human-like responses to complex solutions, the CEO of OpenAI, the company that spawned this application, has raised some serious concerns about its dangerous capabilities and how it might impact the livelihood of millions of people.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>During an interview with ABC News, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman&nbsp;admitted that they are “a little bit scared” of their creation, saying that it may wipe out a lot of current jobs.</p>

<p>“We’ve got to be careful here…I think people should be happy that we are a little bit scared of this,” the 37-year-old tech entrepreneur said on Friday.</p>

<p>When asked to explain why he was “scared”, Altman replied that if he wasn’t “scared” then “you should either not trust me or be very unhappy that I’m in this job.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is going to&nbsp;eliminate a lot of current jobs, that’s true. We can make much better ones. The reason to develop AI at all, in terms of impact on our lives and improving our lives and upside, this will be the greatest technology humanity has yet developed,” he said.</p>

<p>China's Baidu unveiled its much-awaited artificial intelligence-powered chatbot&nbsp;known as&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;Bot&nbsp;on Thursday, but disappointed investors with its use of pre-recorded videos and the lack of a public launch, sending its shares tumbling.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The just over an hour-long presentation, which came two days after Alphabet Inc's Google unveiled a flurry of AI tools for its email, collaboration and cloud software, gave the world a glimpse of what could be China's strongest rival to US&nbsp;research lab OpenAI's ChatGPT.</p>

<p>But unlike ChatGPT, which last November launched as a free to use chatbot&nbsp;to the public, Baidu limited the presentation to brief videos that showed&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;carrying out mathematical calculations, speaking in Chinese dialects and generating a video and image with text prompts.</p>

<p>It will only be open for trial to an initial group of users with invitation codes from Thursday, while companies can apply to embed the&nbsp;bot&nbsp;into their products via Baidu's cloud platform, the company said.</p>

<p>Baidu's Hong Kong shares tumbled as much as 10% while its CEO Robin Li spoke and eventually closed 6.4% lower, shaving over $3 billion off the Chinese search engine giant's market valuation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It seems like the presentation was more of a monologue and scripted rather than an interactive session that people were looking for. There was no soft launch date either which likely led to negative sentiments," said Kai Wang, an analyst from Morningstar.</p>

<p>Baidu is seen as a leader in a race in China among tech giants and startups to develop a rival to Microsoft ChatGPT, which took the world by storm after showcasing the power of so-called generative AI, which can create new text, imagery and other content based on inputs from past data.</p>

<p>The company's&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;bot&nbsp;is based off its AI-driven deep learning model,&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;- short for "Enhanced Representation through Knowledge Integration".</p>

<p>During the presentation at Baidu's Beijing headquarters that was also livestreamed over nine platforms, Li cautioned it was not perfect. "So why are we unveiling it today? Because the market demands it," he said.</p>

<p>Baidu did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the share drop but after the presentation published a statement saying that over 30,000 corporate users had applied to test the API of&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;Bot's business-facing edition and that traffic on Baidu's cloud website soared.</p>

<p>"After the release of ChatGPT, only Baidu has made a benchmark product among the major tech companies in the world," it said.</p>

<p><strong>National champion</strong></p>

<p>Charlie Chai, an analyst with 86Research, said while the event was clearly a disappointment for many who had viewed it as a trading catalyst, he still viewed Baidu as the best bet in China's AI space.</p>

<p>"We continue to advise investors to patiently hold BIDU shares as the best 'national champion' play in China’s (semi-segregated) AI space," he said.</p>

<p>Baidu has touted its many years of heavy R&amp;D investment in artificial intelligence and deep learning and said it plans to use&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;Bot&nbsp;to revolutionise its search engine as well as use it to increase efficiency in cloud, smart cars and household appliances.</p>

<p>Earlier this week, OpenAI on Tuesday said it is beginning to release a powerful artificial intelligence model known as GPT-4, describing it as "multimodel", meaning images as well as text prompts can spur it to generate content.</p>

<p>Li nodded to GPT-4 during his speech, saying it surprised him with its ability to summarise information, but cautioned against seeing this through the lens of geopolitics.</p>

<p>"Ernie&nbsp;Bot&nbsp;is not a tool of confrontation between China and the United States," he said.</p>

<p>To date, 650 companies have said they will join the&nbsp;Ernie&nbsp;ecosystem, he added.</p>

<p>In the video shared by the company online, it stated that GPT-4 is armed with various capabilities which were not present in the previous iteration of the technology, like the ability to “reason” based on images which have been uploaded by the users.</p>
