Karl Lagerfeld is not new to fame. The German designer, before becoming a cultural symbol, infused new blood and identity into several fashion labels of today. There’s a new show dedicated to his life and how he charted the ladder&nbsp;of success. It’s called Becoming Karl Lagerfeld.&nbsp;

The new show will premiere on Disney+ and is directed by Daniel Bruhl.&nbsp;

<h2>Becoming Karl Lagerfeld gets standing ovation</h2>

The show premiered at Cannes last night on April 7. It received a standing ovation from those present for a good 3 minutes.&nbsp;

Premiering out of competition, Becoming Karl Lagerfeld&nbsp;captures the late German designer in his element. The show also teases his relationship with a young Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin). The two were crazily in love.&nbsp;

The screening&nbsp;started with a fashion show similar to Lagerfeld’s collection for Chloé in the 1970s. It spotlighted in the first episode how the show attracted every celebrity in town. Among those who attended the show, Danish actress and juror Sofie Gråbøl, attended the premiere wearing Lagerfeld’s favourite colour combination. There was also Daniel Hernandez of The Zweiflers, Sunnyi Melles, Jason Priestley, Vanessa Morgan and many others.&nbsp;

<h2>A show on not one but many icons</h2>

Sunnyi Melles, who plays the iconic&nbsp;Marlene Dietrich,&nbsp;told Variety, “Dietrich was 70 years old at the time [when she met Lagerfeld, as depicted in the second episode]. I was so touched to be able to be like her, to express the thoughts she had. It’s such a wonderful script. You always want to do your best as an actor and I wanted to do my best for Marlene."

Meanwhile, Jeanne Damas was “afraid” when approaching her role. She said, “Paloma Picasso is still alive! But in the end, I was free to create my own Paloma. The secret was perhaps in trying to use her ‘code,’ her red lipstick and her sense of style, and keep it joyful."

Alex Lutz, cast as Lagerfeld’s foe Pierre Bergé in Becoming Karl Lagerfeld, added: “The biggest challenge was to forget about the legend. We had to leave it behind, instead of having it dangle in front of us all the time.”

Jennifer Lawrence made quite a statement at Cannes&nbsp;as she stepped out in a bright tangerine red dress and flip-flops. Looking uber chic and yet casual, her red Christian Dior gown made her glow on the red carpet but left everyone wondering why she ditched the heels for a pair of chappals.&nbsp;

<h2>'Shoes too big' for Jennifer Lawrence</h2>

Rubbishing reports that she wore flip-flops to make a political statement, the No Hard Feelings star spoke to Entertainment Tonight and said, “I was not making a political statement, not that I wouldn’t. I had no idea until it came out that there was a whole controversy with people wearing flats, or like, walking down the red carpet barefoot. I had no clue. My shoes were a size too big.”

I put on the flip-flops, and then everybody’s like, ‘What a statement! Wow,'” adding, “I’m all for making a statement. I just would want it to be on purpose."

'I was not making a political statement', says Jennifer Lawrence on wearing flip-flops at Cannes

As she accepted the Palme d'Or in Cannes on Saturday, French director Justine Triet slammed the government of President Emmanuel Macron over its "shocking" suppression of pension protests.

"The country suffered from historic protests over the reform of the pension system. These protests were denied... repressed in a shocking way," she said in her speech, as she won the top prize at the Cannes Film Festival for courtroom drama "Anatomy of a Fall".&nbsp;

Macron has sparked the biggest demonstrations in a generation over reforms to the pension system, which were rammed through parliament without a vote using a special constitutional measure.

The reforms include raising the retirement age from 62 to 64.

Addressing the audience of Hollywood and international film stars, directors, and other industry professionals, Triet also criticised the government's cultural policies.

"The commercialisation of culture that this neoliberal government supports is in the process of breaking France's cultural exception, without which I wouldn't be here today," she said.

Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak hit back that she was "gobsmacked" by Triet's "unfair" comments at one of France's most prominent events.

"This film would not have seen the light of day without our French model of financing cinema, which allows a diversity that is unique in the world. Let's not forget it," she wrote on Twitter.

Palme d'Or winner slams French government in Cannes speech

Apart from movies, and fashion, Cannes Film Festival has been one of the platforms for voicing protests and making strong political statements. Days after a woman dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag staged a protest on the iconic stairs of the festival, on Friday, Iranian-born model&nbsp;Mahlagha Jaberi made a strong political statement against mass executions in Iran.&nbsp;

<h2>For the people of Iran</h2>

Showing solidarity with the people of Iran against the horrific spree of executions, Mahlagha Jaberi walked the red carpet of the international film festival wearing a dress that might attract the world's attention to the worrisome situation in&nbsp;Iran.

Jaberi showed up on the red carpet wearing a black bodycon dress. However, what made people's heads turn was the collar of the dress, which was a beige rope that was attached to her dress in the shape of a noose. Jila Saber designed her dress.&nbsp;

Jaberi shared a montage video of her wearing the dress with a message reading, ''Stop execution.''

<h2>Alarming situation&nbsp;</h2>

There has been a surge in executions in the country this year. The dire situation, which is a threat to human rights, has alarmed campaigners from around the world.

Norway-based Iran Human Rights (IHR) and Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty said in a joint report in April that the authorities hanged 75 per cent more people in 2022 than in the previous year. As per reports, at least 582 people were executed in Iran last year, the highest number of executions in the country since 2015.

Apart from movies, and fashion, Cannes Film Festival has been one of the platforms for voicing protests and making strong political statements. Days after a woman dressed in the colours of the Ukrainian flag staged a protest on the iconic stairs of the festival, on Friday, Iranian-born model Mahlagha Jaberi made a strong political statement against mass executions in Iran. For the people of Iran Showing solidarity with the people of Iran against the horrific spree of executions, Mahlagha Jaberi walked the red carpet of the international film festival wearing a dress that might attract the world's attention to the worrisome situation in Iran. Jaberi showed up on the red carpet wearing a black bodycon dress. However, what made people's heads turn was the collar of the dress, which was a beige rope that was attached to her dress in the shape of a noose. Jila Saber designed her dress. Jaberi shared a montage video of her wearing the dress with a message reading, ''Stop execution.'' View this post on Instagram A post shared by MAHLAGHA ☽ (@mahlaghajaberi) × Sharing the video, she wrote, ''Dedicated to the people of Iran. #76thcannesfilmfestival. My dress is designed by @jilaatelier .Incredible videographer by @joystrotz . Thank you for bringing our vision to life.And special thanks to my manager Myhanh @mahlaghamanagement for making this all possible. #StopExecutionsInIran.'' Her dress has caused a sensation on the social media handles. Reacting to her brave move, one Instagram user wrote, ''I didn't follow you and I didn't even know you that much, but today everyone is talking about your patriotism except for the enemies of the country, you showed it in the best way possible #'' While another one simply commented, ''The message you delivered to the world was great. Thank you, dear Mahlagha. Hoping for freedom.'' Alarming situation There has been a surge in executions in the country this year. (With inputs from agencies)

Triet called being only the third woman to win "surprising" and said the decision was encouraging for the future.

"We're at the dawn of deep-seated changes in this respect," she said after winning.

Triet used her award speech to criticize how the protest against pension reforms in France "has been denied and repressed in a shocking way" and said more space needed to be made for young filmmakers to be able to make mistakes and start over.

Triet, who had previously been nominated for Sibyl&nbsp;in 2019, won the prize over veteran directors like Hirokazu Kore-eda, Ken Loach and Wim Wenders, all of whom have at least one Palme d'Or under their belts.

She joins New Zealand's Jane Campion and France's Julia Ducournau as only the third woman to have won the competition that this year included a record seven female directors.

Jane Fonda, who introduced the award, said that one day it would be normal for women to win, not historic.

"We have a long way to go. But still, we have to celebrate change when it happens," said the film icon and activist.

The Grand Prix, the second-highest prize after the Palme d'Or, went to British director Jonathan Glazer's "Zone of Interest," about a family living next to Auschwitz.

"It's so important that the film goes out into the world and hopefully has an effect and gets people talking about the themes that are in the film," Glazer said after winning.

Starring in both winning films is German actor Sandra Hueller. In "Anatomy of a Fall" she stars as a writer who is the main suspect in her husband's death, while in "Zone of Interest" she is the wife of the commandant of the Auschwitz death camp.

However, the award for best female actor went to Merve Dizdar, who plays a teacher in an isolated village in Turkey in Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan's "About Dry Grasses."

Best actor went to Japan's renowned Koji Yakusho, who plays a toilet cleaner in Tokyo who is content to just read books and listen to music in German director Wim Wenders' "Perfect Days."

"Fallen Leaves" by Finland's Aki Kaurismaki, who was back in the competition after more than a decade, took the jury prize.

The award was accepted on his behalf by the two main stars of the tragicomedy that follows a budding romance between a quiet young woman and a heavy-drinking sandblaster.

French-Vietnamese director Tran Anh Hung took home best director for "The Pot-au-Feu," a food-obsessed French film starring Juliette Binoche and Benoit Magimel as a couple.

While introducing best screenplay, John C Reilly showed his support for striking Hollywood writers with roughly a minute of wordless mimicry before saying: "What we just experienced is what a movie would be like without screenwriters."

That prize went to Yuji Sakamoto for the Japanese entry "Monster," directed by Kore-eda, which follows a series of misunderstandings surrounding two schoolboys' friendship.

On Friday, "Anatomy of a Fall" also won the top prize at the Palm Dog awards for border collie Messi's performance as Snoop in what organizers said was the toughest competition yet.

This year's closing movie was Pixar's "Elemental", an animated feature about a city where the four elements live together, featuring the voices of Leah Lewis and Mamoudou Athie.

With a guestlist that boasted equal parts wealth, fame and glamour, amfAR returned to the French Riviera Thursday for its Cannes gala to raise money for AIDS research.

Queen Latifah hosted the 29th edition with Eva Longoria, Fan Bingbing and Rebel Wilson among the stars walking the red carpet. Also in attendance were models Elsa Hosk, Heidi Klum, Coco Rocha and Winne Harlow. The gala attracts many of the top names attending the nearby Cannes Film Festival.

Attendees arrived at the famous Hôtel Du Cap, Eden Roc where the evening started with sunset drinks and canapes looking out to a giant super yacht moored up in the bay.

This was followed by a dinner of asparagus and truffle starter and seared salmon main course while guests enjoyed a night of performances that Gladys Knight kicked off.

Bebe Rexha and Adam Lambert also performed.

“I’m very honoured to be singing tonight for this cause and seeing amazing people on the carpet and … beautiful fashion all in the name of raising money for HIV, AIDS, research,” Lambert said before the gala.

Halsey closed the show.

The auction featured an array of artwork, diamond jewels, and experiences.

The centerpiece was a unique Aston Martin sportscar, the first of its type in the world which was auctioned off by Eva Longoria and sold for 1.5 million euros ($1.6 million).

The engine cover is signed by F1 drivers Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso and the car will be presented at a Grand Prix of the buyer’s choice and then delivered anywhere in the world.

Other top lots included a pair of white gold Chopard earrings set with diamonds and emeralds sold for 275,000 euros ($295,000) and a Damien Hirst portrait of Leonardo DiCaprio reached 1.2 million euros ($1.29 million).

DiCaprio, an amfAR regular, slipped in undetected by cameras to enjoy the entertainment but did not come to the stage to present the winning bidder with his prize.

The annual runway show curated by Carine Roitfeld was this year dedicated to designer Vivienne Westwood and saw a trail of top fashion models showing off a series of designs on a makeshift catwalk through the diners. ‘Jewelry and accessories are not part of this lot’ states the catalogue as the whole collection was auctioned off to the highest bidder an impressive 600,000 euros ($644,000) to the sound of Tina Turner’s “The Best.”

Guests ended the night dancing into the early hours at the afterparty, held by the hotel’s swimming pool.

In the video, she can be seen swiftly climbing the stairs, after which she reaches into her dress, pulls out the fake blood capsules, bursts them raising above her head and smiles in front of the cameras.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky made a surprise video address at the opening ceremony of the Cannes Film Festival last year.&nbsp;

“Hundreds of people are dying every day. They won’t get up again after the clapping at the end,” he told the audience, which had reacted with surprise when the pre-recorded message was introduced.

“Will cinema keep quiet, or will it speak up? If there is a dictator, if there is a war for freedom, once again, everything depends on our unity. Can cinema stay outside of this unity?” Zelensky added.

“Chaplin’s dictator did not destroy the real dictator, but thanks to cinema, thanks to this film, cinema did not stay quiet,” Zelensky said.

<h2>‘Bakhmut not occupied,’ insists Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky despite Russia claiming victory</h2>

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky continued to insist on Sunday that the besieged Ukrainian city of Bakhmut has “not been occupied”, despite Russia claiming victory.

"Bakhmut is not occupied by Russia today," Zelensky told a press conference during the G7 summit in Hiroshima, according to AFP news agency.

"They are in Bakhmut," he said, not clarifying if that referred to Russian or Ukrainian troops.

"I cannot share with you the tactical views of our military. The most difficult thing would be if there was some tactical mistake in Bakhmut and our people were surrounded," he said.

On Saturday, the chief of the Russian mercenary Wagner Group claimed that they have taken full control of Bakhmut following months of a protracted and bloody war with the Ukrainian troops.

Todd Haynes' May December gets six-minute standing ovation at Cannes premiere

The Hollywood cavalcade descended on Cannes Saturday for the premiere of Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese's Native American crime epic, Killers of the Flower Moon&nbsp;which received rave reviews.

The three-and-a-half-hour movie sees DiCaprio play alongside Scorsese's other long-time muse Robert De Niro, and charts a wave of murders among oil-rich Osage Indians in the 1920s and the birth of the FBI.

After hours of waiting in the rain that has drenched the French Riviera town all week, fans went wild as the trio arrived for the premiere alongside several native Americans in traditional outfits.

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/jimmy-buffett-hospitalized-for-an-unspecified-illness-cancels-upcoming-gig-594514">Jimmy Buffett hospitalised for an unspecified illness, cancels upcoming gig</a>

Co-star Jesse Plemons arrived with his wife Kirsten Dunst, while Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett, and Tobey Maguire were also present.

Based on a nonfiction bestseller, the film sees DiCaprio play a weak-willed man who marries a wealthy Osage Indian and is drawn into the deadly schemes of his kingpin uncle (De Niro).&nbsp;

Words like "searing", "triumph" and "masterpiece" were bandied about by critics who managed to get their hands on a ticket.&nbsp;

IndieWire said DiCaprio gives "his best-ever performance", while The Guardian awarded five stars for a "remarkable epic about the bloody birth of America".&nbsp;

There were some dissenting notes, with The Times calling it "a damp squib" and Little White Lies saying Scorsese "guts the story of anything that might sully the high seriousness of the subject matter".

- Frontrunners -

Killers of the Flower Moon,&nbsp;funded by Apple, was screening out-of-competition in Cannes.

It is the first time the 80-year-old Scorsese, who won the Palme in 1976 for Taxi Driver, has presented a film here since 1985's lesser-known After Hours, though he served as jury president in 1998.

Elsewhere, the race for the festival's top prize Palme d'Or was heating up.

More Hollywood royalty walked the red carpet for Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore's new film May December,&nbsp;which looks at the relationship between an older woman and a schoolboy, still married years after their relationship became a tabloid scandal.

An early front-runner is British director Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest, a unique and horrifying look at the private life of a Nazi officer working at the Auschwitz concentration camp.

Critics were near-unanimous in their praise, Variety calling it "chilling and profound, meditative and immersive, a movie that holds human darkness up to the light and examines it as if under a microscope".&nbsp;

It was partly inspired by a book of the same name by British novelist Martin Amis, who died on Saturday at 73.

Also well received was "Four Daughters", a heartbreaking documentary about radicalisation within a Tunisian family that is both inventive and engaging.

That may go down well with jury president Ruben Ostlund, last year's winner for "Triangle of Sadness", who likes his arthouse films with some lighter touches.

A total of 21 films are in the main competition, which concludes on May 27, including previous winners such as Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda, Germany's Wim Wenders and Britain's Ken Loach.

- Ageing icons -

The weather has been untypically wet this year, but Cannes has had no shortage of splashy moments since kicking off on Tuesday with the controversial appearance of Johnny Depp, playing French king Louis XV in Jeanne du Barry.

The festival saw an emotional appearance from Harrison Ford, receiving an honorary Palme d'Or at the world premiere of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny".

And at the risk of turning the event into a festival of ageing Hollywood males, there was also an honorary Palme for Michael Douglas, and an appearance from Sean Penn as a grizzled New York paramedic in "Black Flies".

Indiana Jones 5 review roundup: Does Harrison Ford film disappoint?

Speaking at the Cannes Film Festival, Sean Penn expressed strong support for the ongoing Hollywood screenwriters strike, referring to the dispute over artificial intelligence (AI) as "a human obscenity." Penn, a veteran writer-director and actor, addressed the mistreatment of writers, actors, and directors in the industry. He criticised producers for resisting new concepts, including the use of AI, and called for changes in the behaviour of the Producers Guild, which he suggested should be renamed the "Bankers Guild."

<h2>What is WGA strike?</h2>

The strike by film and TV screenwriters began due to failed negotiations with producers. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) is seeking improved pay, updated contracts for the streaming era, and protections against the use of AI-generated scripts. Penn highlighted the difficulties faced by many writers and industry professionals who are unable to work during this time. He anticipated a self-reflective process within the industry and questioned which side would endure.

<h2>What is behind the writer's strike?</h2>

With Netflix and Amazon Prime Video and other streamers emerging as key players, the space is suddenly crowded, with every major studio jumping on the bandwagon. The wealth of content has led to an increase in the number of series and films that are annually made, leading to more job opportunities for writers. However, this has come at a cost, with writers claiming they are making less than they used to, while working under more strained conditions. As such, the WGA is seeking more compensation for writers upfront, since many of the payments writers have historically profited from the back end, like syndication and international licencing, have been largely phased out by the onset of streaming.

<h2>WGA strike is a hot topic at Cannes</h2>

Following the press conference, Penn clarified his intended reference to the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) instead of the Producers Guild of America.

Penn's comments coincide with the potential for a broader work stoppage in Hollywood, as the Directors Guild negotiates a new contract with producers, and SAG-AFTRA, the actors union, seeks strike authorisation for upcoming contract negotiations.

During the Cannes Film Festival, the strike has been a recurring topic among American stars, filmmakers, and producers. Ethan Hawke wore a shirt with "Pencils Down" written on it, and juror Paul Dano expressed his intention to join his wife, Zoe Kazan, on the picket lines.

At another press conference for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Kathleen Kennedy, chief of Lucasfilm and a prominent film producer, stated that most people fully support the writers' rightful demands. She acknowledged the broader industry changes and technological advancements that are impacting the situation, emphasising the need for preparation and adaptation.

Cannes set for women director record, A-list lineup

Wes Anderson, Ken Loach, Todd Haynes and Wim Wenders are among the directors who will compete for the top prize at next month's&nbsp;Cannes&nbsp;Film Festival, where a spate of Hollywood stars will also premiere their latest works on the famed Croisette waterfront.

At a press conference on Thursday, festival director Thierry Fremaux announced the line-up for the 76th edition of the major cinema showcase from May 16-27.

Nineteen films will vie for the festival's coveted Palme d'Or prize, of which six are directed by women.

"It's a competition that will mix young filmmakers competing for the first time with veterans whose names and works we know," Fremaux said.

Loach returns to the festival with "The Old Oak", about Syrian refugees arriving in a former mining village in Britain, while Anderson brings his star-studded "Asteroid City", in which major events disrupt a junior stargazer convention.

Other directors in the competition include American filmmaker Haynes with "May December" starring Oscar winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore, Italian Nanni Moretti with “Il Sol Dell’Avvenire”, German filmmaker Wim Wenders with “Perfect Days” and Japan's Hirokazu Kore-eda with "Monster".

Women directors in the competition include France's Catherine Breillat with "L’Ete Dernier", Austrian Jessica Hausner with “Club Zero” and Tunisian Kaouther Ben Hania with “Les Filles D’Olfa”.

Organisers have already announced the festival's opener - the biographical drama "Jeanne du Barry" featuring Johnny Depp, the Hollywood star's first live-action film since his defamation trial against ex-wife Amber Heard last year.

Also out of competition is veteran Martin Scorsese's "Killers of the Flower Moon", about the murders of Osage Native Americans. Set in 1920s Oklahoma, the movie features past Scorsese collaborators Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Jesse Plemons.

Adventurer Indiana Jones will also return to the festival 15 years after his last appearance at&nbsp;Cannes. Harrison Ford reprises the title role in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny", which will have its world premiere in France.

Fremaux said there would also be a special tribute to Ford's career at the festival.

Swedish director Ruben Ostlund, whose film “Triangle of Sadness” won last year’s Palme d’Or, will preside over the jury at this year's competition.

Wes Anderson, Ken Loach, Todd Haynes and Wim Wenders are among the directors who will compete for the top prize at next month's Cannes Film Festival, where a spate of Hollywood stars will also premiere their latest works on the famed Croisette waterfront.
