<p>A slew of Taiwanese movies at the Cannes Film Festival offer the island an increasingly rare chance to tell its stories on the global stage. These days few countries even have formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, a self-ruled island that is claimed by Beijing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Introducing his neo-noir thriller <em>Locust</em>&nbsp;at the world-famous festival, artist and director KEFF said he was "not interested in debating whether or not Taiwan should be a country."</p>

<p>"But we've gotten to a point where to even reflect the reality of Taiwan is to be provocative. And I don't agree with that," he told AFP.</p>

<p><em>Locust</em>&nbsp;centres on Zhong-Han, a restaurant worker who runs with a violent gang by night, and is mute -- a striking metaphor for his home island.</p>

<p>"Zhong-Han represents a generation that is unable to speak for itself, but also a place, Taiwan, that is unable to speak for itself," the director said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Actor Liu Wei-chen was forbidden to speak for weeks before shooting began, to prepare for the role.</p>

<p>Meanwhile,&nbsp;<em>Mongrel</em>, which premiered Monday, explores the lives of undocumented workers, including a caregiver living in the mountains of Taiwan. Its producer, Lynn Chen, told The Hollywood Reporter that Cannes provides an opportunity to share a "unique and compelling cinematic experience."</p>

<p><strong>- 'Not just a headline' -</strong></p>

<p>KEFF, who has lived much of his life in the United States, set out to create his portrait of Taiwanese youth soon after moving back to the island in 2019.</p>

<p>He observed a surprising lack of interest from younger generations in Beijing's crackdown on nearby Hong Kong -- an encroachment that many fear could preface a full-scale invasion of Taiwan.</p>

<p>Beijing has said it would never renounce the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control.</p>

<p>The film also explores the lack of interest in international affairs among young Taiwanese.</p>

<p>KEFF said he wanted to tell human stories from an island too often viewed by the rest of the world merely as a potential flashpoint for World War Three, or a source of top-end semiconductors for smartphones.</p>

<p>"We're not just a headline in the news," said KEFF.</p>

<p><strong>- 'Brave' -</strong></p>

<p>The island's government has tried in recent years to make up for its lack of diplomatic clout by building up soft power through film.</p>

<p>Taiwanese funding -- including government-backed initiatives -- is behind two other films: <em>The Shameless</em>, set in India; and <em>Rendez-vous avec Pol Pot</em>, based in Cambodia.</p>

<p><em>Traversing the Mist</em>&nbsp;offers audiences an immersive and explicit look inside a Taiwanese gay sauna.</p>

<p>"We're not provocateurs. But we have a history of being brave. And so I feel that history should continue," said KEFF.</p>

<p>"Taiwanese people must continue to advocate for themselves. I'm not saying as a political entity, but as human beings."</p>

<p>The Cannes Film Festival is underway with&nbsp;films from worldwide being screened at the event. On May 19, actress Demi Moore's movie <em>The Substance </em>premiered at the Grand Lumiere Theatre, and got a wonderful reaction from the audience at the event.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Helmed by French director Coralie Forgeat, the horror thriller received a 13-minute standing ovation,&nbsp;the longest ovation at the festival this year.</p>

<p>Directed, produced and written by Forgeat, the movie stars Demi Moore, Dennis Quaid and Margaret Qualley.&nbsp;</p>

The award-winning music composer revealed that his music documentary follows the Naga tribe in the northeastern Indian state of Nagaland as they heal through music while their state is deep in the depths of violence and bloodshed.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why make a film on Naga people and their music?</strong></h2>

<p>Intrigued on a personal level by the music of northeastern India, he said he was exposed to the same when he visited the annually held Hornbill Festival, a cultural celebration of all the ethnic groups of Nagaland.</p>

<p>AR Rahman told Variety, “I was blown away, the whole story, that we’ve been hearing for years, decades, and suddenly the transformation of young people taking to music and they’re all out in the streets. It was like a dreamland for me. I said, ‘Oh, my God, this exists and nobody knows about it’.”</p>

<p>On how he went about making a documentary on the same, AR Rahman said he got in touch with Rohit Gupta (who has directed the docu-film <em>Headhunting to Beatboxing</em>) who had made the Netflix documentary series <em>The Creative Indians. &nbsp;</em></p>

<p>“We also adopted an orphanage there to teach music. We teach them strings. They’re much quicker because they have this church choir, so they have music in-built in their process,” Rahman said.</p>

<p>On the philosophy behind the film <em>Headhunting to Beatboxing</em>, Rahman says, “Gandhi’s non-violence was such a great statement to the world, an inspiration. How you can achieve freedom through non-violence is one of the biggest achievements in the world. And now the world is so primal and going back to killing and there’s so much suffering happening. And I felt that here is a community which were violent, and not because they wanted to be violent. And they’ve completely moved away. [Now] they have a minister for music. And being a musician, I think it looks like an amazing combination of things, an evolution, which could inspire the whole world. Like anybody can turn into anything. And music plays a great part of it.”</p>

<p>Selena Gomez's Spanish drama <em>Emilia Perez</em> earned an outstanding response from the audience at the Cannes Film Festival. Director Jacques Audiard returned to the prestigious film festival with a musical drama that&nbsp;earned a nine-minute standing ovation, the longest of this year's festival so far.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was a heartwarming moment for the entire team. Watching the entire crowd erupt in cheers and blow whistles, Selena became&nbsp;emotional and&nbsp;was seen wiping her tears. Director Audiard greeted the crowd from the balcony.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the unaware, Audiard is a regular at the Cannes Film Festival, and this is his sixth movie in the main competition. Apart from Selena, the movie stars &nbsp;Zoe Saldana, Édgar Ramírez and Karla Sofía Gascón.</p>

This year, the Indian classic movie<em> Manthan </em>was screened at the Cannes Classics section. To note, Shyam Benegal's movie has become the only Indian film to be screened at the section of the festival.</p>

<p>This prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival is currently underway in the picturesque city of French Riviera, where cinema lovers from around the globe have gathered to celebrate an array of films from the nook and corner of the world. On May 17, Yorgos Lanthimos’<em> Kinds of Kindness</em>,&nbsp;starring Emma Stone, was premiered at the festival.</p>

<p>The screening&nbsp;of the movie comes just two months after Emma Stone and Yorgos' second collaboration <em>Poor Things </em>won four Academy Awards. This&nbsp;movie, which marks the third collaboration between Emma and director Yorgos, was premiered at Cannes‘ Grand Theatre Lumiere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After the clapping stopped, Lanthimos exited the movie hall without even addressing the audience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per Variety, during the premiere, there were few walkouts, especially after the second part of the anthology series, which is said to be gorier.</p>

<p>Before the screening, the entire cast of the movie along with the director walked the red carpet surrounded by shutterbugs. Emma who looked thrilled, was wearing a shimmery&nbsp;Louis Vuitton dress with a deep V-neck. She kept her hair and makeup subtle.</p>

<p>The<em> Poor Things</em> star looked happy as she was enjoying the vibe at the premiere. Standing next to Dafoe, she was seen dancing and cracking jokes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Happy and excited for his film to get screened at Cannes, Rajpal Yadav said in an earlier interview, “I am extremely grateful to IMPAA (Indian Motion Pictures Producers Association) for liking the film and recommending it be screened at the prestigious film festival. I have been invited to the festival earlier but I always wanted to attend it with a film, and I’m getting to do it now. I’m very happy that the film is going to the prestigious festival.”</p>

<p>He added, “It is a prestigious place for any film to be screened. It is like the trade center of films, so to have the film go there is humbling and prideful. I feel very happy that I’m able to present such a good, content-centric film on such an international platform, and it’s all thanks to Bollywood and IMPAA suggesting the film go to the festival. It will resonate with people all over the world irrespective of their class.”</p>

<p>Local authorities say they are using 17 experimental cameras equipped with AI technology that are supposed to "identify events or behaviours deemed suspicious" and help detect abandoned packages, weapons and people in distress.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Cannes town hall has been asking to implement them since 2019 but has only been given permission thanks to changes in surveillance laws introduced for the Olympics that kick off in Paris in July, according to Mayor David Lisnard.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said the town already had the "densest video protection network in France", with 884 cameras, one for every 84 residents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cannes also has 462 emergency call buttons spread across public spaces and buildings.&nbsp;</p>

<p>There were concerns that mobilisation for the Olympics would deprive the festival of police resources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But Paris authorities say they are sending some 400 security forces in addition to the 200 officers and 66 surveillance agents already in Cannes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Cannes International Film Festival is about to begin. This year, a Sikkimese feature film <em>Tara: The Lost Star</em> from Sikkimese Director Samten Bhutia has been selected for market screening &nbsp;(Marche du Film) at the prestigious film festival.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Directed by Bhutia, the movie is in the Nepali language and stars&nbsp;local artists&nbsp;Shyama Shree Sherpa and Kiran Dahal, alongside Deoraj Sherpa, Loonibha Tuladhar, Shashikala Pradhan, Sushmita Bhujel, Basant Sharma, Anand Gurung, and Timothy Rai.<br />

Directed by Bhutia, the movie is in the Nepali language and stars local artists Shyama Shree Sherpa and Kiran Dahal, alongside Deoraj Sherpa, Loonibha Tuladhar, Shashikala Pradhan, Sushmita Bhujel, Basant Sharma, Anand Gurung, and Timothy Rai. The movie is bankrolled by Sabitri Chettri, under the banner of SaDa Productions in association with Passang Mintok Films. Elaborating more on the movie, the filmmakers told PTI, ''With its compelling narrative, 'Tara: The Lost Star' is a feature film in Nepali Language which offers a window into the beliefs of Himalayas and Sikkim's vibrant culture. It is a social drama film, starring local artists Shyama Shree Sherpa and Kiran Dahal, with the primary cast being Deoraj Sherpa, Loonibha Tuladhar, Shashikala Pradhan, Sushmita Bhujel, Basant Sharma, Anand Gurung and Timothy Rai."
