Air Canada Flight Attendants Stay on Strike Despite Airline Resuming Flights

Air Canada flight attendants have announced they will continue their strike, defying the government’s back-to-work order.

Air Canada Attendants Continue Strike, Defy Back-to-Work Order

Air Canada announced it will resume flights Sunday evening, but the cabin crew union plans to challenge the Labour Board's order requiring over 10,000 members to return to work.

Air Canada Strike Continues Even as Airline Resumes Flights

An Air Canada strike has left thousands of passengers stranded as flights across the country face major disruptions. Travelers are experiencing delays and cancellations.

Air Canada Strike: Thousands Stranded As Flights Disrupted

Canada’s government has intervened to end a massive strike at Air Canada, directing more than 10,000 flight attendants back to work after the walkout grounded flights and stranded tens of thousands of passengers. The decision, however, has ignited a political and labour firestorm. According to Bloomberg, around 10,500 flight attendants walked off the job early Saturday after contract talks between the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) and Air Canada collapsed. The airline responded by cancelling hundreds of flights and locking out staff, disrupting travel for an estimated 130,000 passengers a day during the peak summer season. Air Canada, the country’s largest carrier, also warned that its network could take up to a week to return to full operations. Business groups estimated nearly one million passengers and significant cargo shipments could be impacted if the disruption dragged on.
Ottawa steps in
Less than 12 hours into the strike, Jobs Minister Patty Hajdu directed the independent Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to order flight attendants back to work. Hajdu also asked the board to impose binding arbitration and extend the terms of the current contract until a new one is decided. “It has now become clear that this dispute won’t be resolved at the table,” Hajdu said in a statement, adding that Canadians were already in “very difficult situations” and the strike was “rapidly impacting the Canadian economy.” Bloomberg noted that in past disputes involving Canada’s railway and postal workers, the CIRB acted within days to enforce similar government orders.
Union backlash
The move has been fiercely opposed by CUPE, which represents the flight attendants. The union accused the government of siding with the airline, saying the directive rewards Air Canada while “crushing workers’ rights.” Despite the government order, CUPE vowed that the strike would continue, intensifying the pressure on Ottawa and the airline. Polling by Abacus Data, cited by Bloomberg, revealed that 59 per cent of Canadians wanted the government to respect workers’ right to strike, even at the cost of travel disruptions. A majority of respondents expressed more sympathy for the flight attendants than for the airline.
Political and business reactions
The government’s move has divided opinion across Canada. Business groups welcomed the intervention. Matthew Holmes, head of public policy at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, said: “With valuable cargo grounded and passengers stranded, the government made the right decision to refer the two sides to binding arbitration. Every hour counts.” But opposition politicians condemned Prime Minister Mark Carney’s handling of the crisis. Conservative Party labour spokesman Kyle Seeback accused Carney of siding with corporations over workers. “He is proving once again that he is no friend to workers or labour, and would rather reward his corporate buddies than pay flight attendants who work tirelessly on their feet all day,” Seeback said, as quoted by Bloomberg.
A controversial legal tool
At the heart of the dispute is Ottawa’s use of a controversial legal power that allows the government to direct the CIRB to impose arbitration in order to “secure industrial peace.” While successive governments have used it in critical labour disputes, unions argue it undermines collective bargaining and emboldens companies to wait for state intervention rather than negotiate. It remains unclear when flights will resume. If the CIRB acts as swiftly as in past cases, arbitration could be enforced within days. But until then, Canada faces deepening travel chaos, a widening political storm, and a fundamental clash over the balance between workers’ rights and economic stability. (With inputs from the agencies)

The Canadian Union of Public Employees denounced the move as a blow to workers’ rights and vowed to continue striking, while polling showed most Canadians sympathise with the attendants.

Canada has unveiled a list of tax measures it intends to carry forward from the Trudeau era, even as Prime Minister Mark Carney moves to reshape the country’s fiscal priorities. According to Bloomberg, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne released draft legislation on Friday for consultation, confirming that many proposals first announced under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau are still on track. The draft package includes changes to small business taxes, expanded credits, adjustments to capital gains exemptions, and enhanced powers for the national tax agency. Stronger reporting requirements for nonprofit organisations are also under review. Public feedback will be taken until September 12 before the legislation heads to Parliament later this year. Bloomberg reported that most of the proposals were laid out in last year’s budget and fall economic statement. However, political uncertainty following the abrupt resignation of former finance minister Chrystia Freeland and Trudeau’s subsequent departure had raised doubts over which measures would survive under Carney’s leadership.
Carney signals shifts but keeps core
Not all Trudeau-era policies remain. Bloomberg noted that Carney has already rolled back an increase in the capital gains inclusion rate and suspended the consumer carbon tax, signalling a shift in fiscal direction. Still, by retaining several pre-Carney initiatives, the government is aiming for continuity while preparing to set out new spending priorities. One technical change in the draft legislation would update sales tax exemptions, allowing input tax credits for redeemed coupons if used in the course of commercial activities. The move reflects a recent Canadian court of appeal decision.
Budget delayed to October
A government official told Bloomberg that Ottawa’s long-delayed federal budget will be tabled in October. The focus is expected to be on defence spending, housing, and a reallocation of fiscal resources away from consumption and towards investment—core themes in Carney’s election platform. Economists warn, however, that Canada’s fiscal position is set to deteriorate further. The parliamentary budget officer and several forecasters project a deficit exceeding C$70 billion ($50.7 billion) in the current fiscal year. By comparison, the official forecast published last December had projected a C$42 billion shortfall, before Trump’s new tariffs and Canada’s federal election altered the fiscal landscape.
Balancing continuity and new priorities
Carney’s challenge lies in balancing continuity with change, keeping investor and business confidence stable by preserving key measures, while reshaping Canada’s fiscal trajectory towards investment-heavy spending. As Parliament prepares to resume later this year, the October budget will be the first major test of his government’s economic vision. (With inputs from the agencies)

US President Donald Trump has said that Washington is on the brink of sealing a trade deal with India, while a breakthrough with the European Union could also be in sight. However, he offered no clear path forward on negotiations with Canada, as trade tensions continue to mount ahead of a key tariff deadline. In an interview aired on Real America’s Voice on Wednesday, Trump said, “We’re very close to India, and … we could possibly make a deal with [the] EU.” The comments come as the Trump administration races to conclude major trade negotiations ahead of August 1 — the date when broad-based US import tariffs are set to rise again. As per Reuters, the Trump administration has intensified its trade talks in recent weeks as it attempts to rebalance the country’s trade relationships and shrink the US trade deficit. Both Indian and European delegations are currently in Washington for fresh rounds of dialogue.
“EU was brutal, now they’re being nice,” says Trump
The US president took a swipe at the European Union’s trade posture in the past, saying the bloc had long imposed unfavourable terms on Washington. “The European Union has been brutal, and now they’re being very nice,” Trump remarked. “They want to make a deal, and it’ll be a lot different than the deal that we’ve had for years,” he added, as quoted by Reuters. EU trade chief Maros Sefcovic arrived in Washington on Wednesday for continued talks on tariffs and industrial standards. The two sides have been discussing a framework that covers tariffs, market access, and technology cooperation, particularly in semiconductors and critical minerals. As per Reuters, Indian officials have signalled readiness to make limited concessions in areas such as medical devices and agricultural imports, while seeking tariff relief on steel, pharmaceuticals, and textiles. A deal would mark a major reset in India–US trade ties, which had faced repeated frictions over tariffs, data protection, and digital trade policies.
Canada deal uncertain, countermeasures on the table
Trump struck a more cautious tone when asked about trade talks with Canada. “Too soon to say,” he said, aligning with remarks from Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who noted earlier on Wednesday that a deal “that works for Canadian workers” was not yet on the table. Canada, like the EU, is reportedly preparing counter-tariffs in case the US pushes ahead with unilateral duties. Talks have stalled over contentious issues such as dairy access, labour standards, and digital taxation.
Blanket tariffs on ‘smaller countries’ under consideration
In a striking remark, Trump added that he may impose blanket tariffs of 10 per cent or 15 per cent on imports from “smaller countries,” though he did not specify which nations could be affected. The proposal aligns with Trump’s broader trade doctrine of using tariff threats to pressure partners into faster concessions. With the August 1 deadline approaching, most US import duties are scheduled to rise unless specific trade agreements are reached. In Canada's Alberta, the premier has called on the federal government to designate the Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist group. The request follows a similar one by the British Columbia (BC) premier. In a statement issued on Monday (Jul 15) Danielle Smith, the premier of Canada's Alberta province, along with the Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis said, "The Lawrence Bishnoi Gang is a transnational criminal network responsible for violence, extortion, drug trafficking and targeted killings, including here in Canada. Scientists have warned of a 100-foot tsunami that will wash off several feet of the shore in the United States. The doomsday tsunami will be triggered by an earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ). This catastrophic event is almost certain to happen by 2100, and there is a 37 per cent chance that it could strike anytime in the next 50 years. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The scary scenario has been revealed by an international team led by researchers at Virginia Tech. The Cascadia zone is a 1,126-kilometre-long fault line and stretches from Northern California to southern British Columbia in Canada. Scientists have warned that if an earthquake of magnitude 9 hits the region, a 100-foot mega tsunami would be generated, which would instantly wipe off almost eight feet of the coastline. The devastation would continue to spread, and major areas of both the US and Canada would go underwater. Quebec Tourism Council's latest ad targeted at Americans is going viral on social media. The ad starts off with a woman concierge asking a man in French how she could help him. The man replies, "Sorry, I don't speak French. I am just visiting." The woman welcomes him and asks, "Where are you visiting from?" The man replies, "I am American." Her expression changes, and she presses a switch underneath her desk, and it seems like she is ringing an alarm bell. Now it seems like the woman is not happy to see an American. But then she goes out of her desk with a big smile and gives the man a giant hug. The tagline reads - "Come, hug it out." Americans have been reacting to the ad that was released around a month ago. Canada is preparing for potential financial intervention in its aluminium industry, as the fallout from President Donald Trump’s steep US tariffs risks deepening into a full-blown trade standoff. The world economy is on edge this week as the United States closes in on a self-imposed deadline for fresh tariffs, ending 90 days of frantic negotiations that have kept businesses and governments guessing. According to Bloomberg, Wednesday marks the end of a temporary pause on President Donald Trump’s so-called “reciprocal” levies, an approach that threatens to bring a new wave of protectionism aimed at cutting US trade deficits and reviving domestic industry. Trump has suggested the first of these tariffs could hit as early as August 1, telling supporters “the money will start to come into the United States” on that date. His administration says the strategy will restore fairness to trade, but critics warn it risks undermining decades of progress in lowering global barriers under World Trade Organization rules. Negotiators have been scrambling for last-minute deals before the cutoff. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent describes trade as one of the three main pillars of Trump’s agenda, along with tax cuts and deregulation. Bloomberg reports that all three are designed to boost investment and job growth, though they’ve also drawn fire for fuelling debt and sowing uncertainty.
Tariffs as economic weapon and gamble
Trump’s embrace of unilateral tariffs marks a stark shift from previous US trade policy, which favoured alliances and rules-based dispute resolution. The president argues that other nations have long taken advantage of American openness and says tariffs will level the playing field. Bloomberg notes that the administration also sees tariffs as a handy source of revenue at a time when debt sustainability is a growing concern. After Congress approved a massive $3.4 trillion tax cut and spending package, Washington is eager for new ways to fill its coffers. Yet economists warn that Trump often misrepresents how tariffs work. According to Bloomberg, while he claims foreign exporters pay these duties, in reality the costs usually land on American importers. That forces companies to choose between absorbing the extra expense, pressuring overseas suppliers to cut prices, or passing costs on to US consumers. Bloomberg Economics estimates that if Trump’s threatened tariff hikes take effect this month, average US import duties could soar to about 20 per cent—far above the roughly 3 per cent level when he first took office.
US economy steady but cautious
So far, the US economy has weathered the uncertainty reasonably well. Bloomberg reports that hiring has remained solid and inflation relatively contained, helping the Federal Reserve resist political pressure for aggressive rate cuts. June’s jobs data showed surprisingly strong growth, driven in part by a surge in public education employment that pushed the jobless rate down. But the Fed remains cautious. Investors will pore over the minutes of the central bank’s June policy meeting this week for hints about whether policymakers see tariffs as a threat to growth or inflation down the line. Weekly jobless claims data due Thursday is expected to show a labour market still tight overall, even as elevated continuing claims hint at challenges for those trying to find new work.
Canada’s job market feels tariff stress
Canada, too, is bracing for fallout. Bloomberg notes that June labour market data is likely to show further weakening after unemployment ticked up to 7 per cent in May. Business sentiment in manufacturing and other trade-exposed sectors has cooled as tariff threats cloud hiring plans. Cross-border tourism is also under pressure, with June figures expected to reveal another drop in return visits.
Asia’s central banks balance growth and risk
Across Asia, policymakers are weighing how to support slowing growth while managing inflation risks, especially as Trump’s tariffs threaten to weaken global demand. Bloomberg says Australia’s central bank is widely expected to cut its cash rate to 3.6 per cent on Tuesday, marking a third straight reduction as inflation cools. That move will follow key business confidence and hiring surveys, with Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser scheduled to speak Wednesday.New Zealand’s central bank is expected to hold its rate steady at 3.25 per cent, while Malaysia’s Bank Negara is also likely to keep its overnight rate unchanged this week. South Korea’s central bank is forecast to maintain its base rate at 2.5 per cent on Thursday, balancing growth support with efforts to contain surging housing prices in Seoul. China will release fresh inflation data on Wednesday that will give clues about domestic demand, while indicators on loans and money supply will also be closely watched. Japan, meanwhile, will report labour cash earnings on Monday, a key gauge of whether rising wages are feeding through to broader consumption. Other Japanese releases this week include bank lending, current account data and the Eco Watchers Survey of business sentiment. Elsewhere in Asia, Bloomberg highlights upcoming data from the Philippines (May employment report), Taiwan (June CPI and trade numbers) and Indonesia (foreign reserves and consumer confidence).India is also keeping a close watch on these developments. While the Reserve Bank of India has adopted a cautious approach to policy in 2025, it remains focused on maintaining a balance between controlling inflation and supporting growth. Officials are monitoring monsoon-driven food price trends, global commodity costs and rupee movements—all of which could be further complicated by any escalation in US trade tensions.
Europe braces for tariff effects
European economies remain exposed to the fallout from US protectionism. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) at Quebec in Canada have arrested Gareth West, who is believed to be the main person behind a large scam that targeted old people across the US and Canada. As reported by CBC, according to the police, the US has charged him with planning wire fraud and money laundering. US officials said that he ran a huge operation where senior citizens in 46 US states were tricked into thinking their grandchildren were in trouble and needed money.
Who is Gareth West and how did he run the scam?
Gareth West has been named as the leader of a scam group. Scammers working for Gareth called elderly people pretending to be their grandchildren, saying they had been arrested or injured and needed money urgently for the bail. Then, fake lawyers or agents would speak to them and arrange to collect the money, often using couriers.According to US authorities, Gareth ran the scam from call centres near Montreal. A 2024 US indictment (written paper that officially accuses somebody of a crime) stated that he hired many workers and used fake American phone numbers to fool people.
How much money did he stole?
US authorities believe that the scam has stole more than $30 million from elderly victims. If found guilty in the US, Gareth could face up to 40 years in prison. He is expected to appear before a judge in Quebec on Saturday, where the process of sending him to the US (extradition) may begin, as per the reports.
Warning from the Police for public
Police are warning everyone to stay alert. If you receive a sudden call asking for money because a family member is in trouble then kindly hang up and check with your relatives. If it seems there is trouble, report it to the authorities immediately.

The long-simmering trade tensions between the United States and Canada flared dramatically this week, after US President Donald Trump abruptly cut off trade negotiations over Ottawa’s plan to press ahead with its new Digital Services Tax. Trump called the move “a direct and blatant attack” on America, warning that punitive tariffs on Canadian goods would be announced within days. As per Associated Press, the President said on Friday that Canada had confirmed it would enforce the controversial tax starting Monday, ending months of fraught negotiations between the two close trading partners.
What is Canada’s Digital Services Tax?
Canada’s Digital Services Tax (DST) was signed into law in June 2024 under the former Trudeau government. According to the Financial Post, the DST applies a three per cent levy on certain revenues earned by large digital firms, those with at least €750 million in global sales and over $20 million in annual Canadian digital revenue. That includes online marketplaces, social media, advertising, and user data sales. It primarily targets American tech giants such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber, and Airbnb. The tax is retroactive to January 1, 2022, leaving US companies with an estimated US$2 billion bill due at the end of June.
How companies are expected to comply?
Under Canadian law, firms had to register with the Canada Revenue Agency by 31 January 2025 and must file their first DST returns by 30 June 2025. Failure to register could mean $20,000-per-year fines. Companies that don’t file on time face penalties of five per cent of the unpaid tax plus an extra one per cent per month, capped at 12 months. The Canadian government says the goal is to make sure digital giants pay their fair share of taxes in Canada.
Why is Trump so angry?
The DST has long infuriated Washington. The US argues it unfairly discriminates against American firms, effectively singling out Silicon Valley giants for extra taxes. Trump used blunt language this week to make his anger clear. “Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” he wrote on social media, as per AP. He added: “Economically, we have such power over Canada. We’d rather not use it. But it’s not going to work out well for Canada. They were foolish to do it.” Trump also predicted Canada would eventually remove the tax — but insisted he didn’t care either way.
US industry reaction
US tech firms and trade associations cheered Trump’s tough stance. As quoted by AP, Matt Schruers, head of the Computer & Communications Industry Association, said: “We appreciate the Administration’s decisive response to Canada’s discriminatory tax on US digital exports.” But companies are already passing the costs onto Canadian users. Google has added a special “Canada DST Fee” — a 2.5 per cent surcharge on ads in Canada — to help cover its new tax burden.
Why Canada is standing firm?
Despite heavy pressure, Canada’s government is refusing to blink. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said last week that Ottawa is “going ahead” with the DST, as per the Financial Post. Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking Friday, was measured but firm: “We will continue to conduct these complex negotiations in the best interests of Canadians. It’s a negotiation.” Canadian officials have suggested they’re open to discussions about the tax as part of broader talks, but for now, it will be enforced, as reported by AP.
Trade dependence raises the stakes
The dispute comes against the backdrop of an extremely deep economic relationship. The United States is by far Canada’s largest trading partner. As per AP, about 80 per cent of Canadian exports go south of the border. That includes three-quarters of all goods shipped abroad. Canada is the largest foreign supplier of steel, aluminium and uranium to the US. It provides 60 per cent of America’s crude oil imports and 85 per cent of electricity imports. Trade is highly integrated, especially for industries like automotive manufacturing, where car parts cross the border multiple times before final assembly. Trump has already imposed 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, as well as new auto tariffs, citing security and anti-drug smuggling concerns.
A fragile trade relationship
The DST fight is only the latest flashpoint. Trump’s administration has warned for months it would retaliate against countries with digital taxes targeting US firms. According to Bloomberg, the US previously launched formal consultations over Canada’s tax under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement. And while Trump says he’ll set new tariff rates for Canadian goods within seven days, Canadian business groups fear the dispute could spiral, hurting both economies. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has warned the DST could “damage our beneficial and lucrative trade relationship with the US.”
Uncertainty ahead
For now, negotiations have collapsed. Trump has said bluntly that Canada could restart talks by scrapping the tax. But Canada insists it won’t be intimidated, betting that the two countries’ deep interdependence will eventually force both sides back to the table. As trade experts warn, the row could test the strength of one of the world’s closest economic relationships at a time when both economies are already facing challenges. (With inputs from the agencies)

Trump threatened punitive tariffs on Canadian goods following Canada announcement of enforcement. While US firms support Trump stance, raising costs for Canadian consumers, Canada remains resolute, with officials stating the DST will proceed despite pressure.

US industry reaction US tech firms and trade associations cheered Trump’s tough stance. Trade dependence raises the stakes The dispute comes against the backdrop of an extremely deep economic relationship. A fragile trade relationship The DST fight is only the latest flashpoint. The Canadian Chamber of Commerce has warned the DST could “damage our beneficial and lucrative trade relationship with the US.” Uncertainty ahead For now, negotiations have collapsed. Trade tensions between the United States and Canada escalated as President Trump halted negotiations over Canada's Digital Services Tax (DST), which he labeled a "blatant attack" on the US.

What is Canada's Digital Service Tax that made Trump cut off trade deal?

US President Donald Trump said Friday that he had terminated all trade discussions with Canada, over what he called “egregious tariffs” on a digital services tax on American tech companies. In a post on Truth Social, Trump referred to Canada as “a very difficult country to trade with” and said that its levy on tech firms—the first payment for which is due Monday—“is a direct and blatant attack on our Country.” “Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” Trump wrote. “We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America within the next seven day period.” Canada is the second-largest trading partner of the United States. Currently, the US has a tariff rate of 25% applied to non-USMCA goods that are imported from Canada. That excludes energy products, on which Trump has applied a 10% tariff rate. Canada also bears much of the brunt of Trump’s 50% tax on steel and aluminum imports, as it is the largest foreign supplier of these materials to the US.

Last week Canada’s finance minister said that he would not delay implementation of a digital services tax even as US trade talks continue. Any firm that makes more than $15 million off of Canadian internet users is subject to a 3% tax on those revenues. “We have just been informed that Canada, a very difficult Country to TRADE with, including the fact that they have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products, has just announced that they are putting a Digital Services Tax on our American Technology Companies, which is a direct and blatant attack on our Country,” Trump said on his Truth Social platform. “Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately.” Trump’s announcement reignites the trade war between the two neighbours, ending a period of some cordial relations following the election of Mark Carney as Canadian prime minister.

Canada will reach NATO's defence spending target of two per cent this year, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Monday, arguing the country had to revitalise its military "to defend every inch of our sovereign territory." Carney's speech at the University of Toronto included stark warnings about the global security order being shaken by US President Donald Trump. But it extended beyond his concern over future US relations. The prime minister warned Canada has not done enough to prepare itself for evolving threats from China, Russia, cyberattacks and the advancing national security implications of climate change. "The long-held view that Canada's geographic location will protect us is becoming increasingly archaic," Carney said. With threats facing the country multiplying, the prime minister said Canada "will achieve NATO's two per cent target this year -- half a decade ahead of schedule." "We are too reliant on the United States," he added. Trump has repeatedly pressured NATO members to increase defence spending, arguing the United States was paying more than its fair share for collective security. In April, the alliance announced that 22 of its 32 members hit the two per cent spending target. But Trump has pushed NATO members to spend even more and warned the United States could refuse to protect countries that don't commit what he considers enough resources to defence. Carney said Canada had become used to a post-war order with the United States as "the global hegemon," and Canada's "closest ally and dominant trading partner." "Now the United States is beginning to monetise its hegemony: charging for access to its markets and reducing its contributions to our collective security," he said, condemning Trump's trade war. Carney said Canada would pursue new security relationships with "like-minded partners," with a specific focus on Europe. "We are actively seeking to strengthen transatlantic security," he said, indicating a Canada-EU summit this month will be "will be more important than ever." 'Vulnerable' Arctic Since taking office in mid-March, Carney has emphasised the changing security landscape in Canada's Arctic, where receding ice caused by climate change is opening the region's vast natural resources to fierce competition. Carney has previously announced plans to substantially expand Canada's military presence in the region, and on Monday he said the "Arctic is becoming more accessible and vulnerable to commercial and military activities." Russia and China are seen as two major rivals who could present increasing Arctic security challenges in the years ahead. Carney framed Monday's military spending announcement as a move designed "to protect Canadians, not to satisfy NATO accountants." He noted the country's military infrastructure was ageing, with only one of four submarines deemed seaworthy, and less than half of the maritime fleet and land vehicles operational.

Canada to reach 2% defence NATO spending target this year, says Prime Minister Carney

In a bold move, Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney defends inviting Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the G7 summit, saying that India, the fifth-largest economy in the world, “should be” at the G7 table. The 51st G7 summit will be held from June 15 to June 17 in Alberta, Canada. In a press briefing, PM Carney was asked about his choice to invite India despite the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) reporting that the Modi Government was orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation in Canada, including murder. In his response, Carney said, “India is the fifth largest economy in the world, effectively the most populous in the world, central to a number of supply chains, so it makes sense. And in addition, bilaterally, we have now agreed importantly to continued law enforcement dialogue, so there's been some progress… I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi in that context, and he has accepted".Notably, the diplomatic relationship between India and Canada deteriorated following the alleged assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver by India. Hardeep was branded as a terrorist in India. However, India denied all such allegations. Tension further escalated when both nations expelled diplomats from each other in October 2024.There had been a sustained effort between the two nations to mend the diplomatic relations, especially following the resignation of Justin Trudeau in March. PM Carney and his Liberal Party were voted into power as they won narrowly in the election on May 23, 2025. Canadian PM Mark Carney defends inviting India's Narendra Modi to the G7 Summit despite RCMP accusations of violence and murder. Here's why he says India "should be" at the table.

And in addition, bilaterally, we have now agreed importantly to continued law enforcement dialogue, so there's been some progress… I extended the invitation to Prime Minister Modi in that context, and he has accepted". Notably, the diplomatic relationship between India and Canada deteriorated following the alleged assassination of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Vancouver by India. Hardeep was branded as a terrorist in India. However, India denied all such allegations. Tension further escalated when both nations expelled diplomats from each other in October 2024. US President Donald Trump has stirred fresh controversy with an audacious offer: Canada can have access to the United States' cutting-edge "Golden Dome" missile defence system — but only if it agrees to become the 51st US state. “I told Canada, which very much wants to be part of our fabulous Golden Dome System, that it will cost $61 Billion Dollars if they remain a separate, but unequal, Nation, but will cost ZERO DOLLARS if they become our cherished 51st State," Trump wrote on his Truth Social network.

Canada has not officially responded to the claim made by Donald Trump. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has acknowledged that his government is in talks with the US regarding participation in the Golden Dome program. “Is it a good idea for Canada? Yes, it is good to have protections in place for Canadians,” Carney said during a press conference last week. "We cooperate if necessary but not necessarily cooperate," he was quoted saying. What Is ‘Golden Dome’ system? Trump's Golden Dome is a missile shield system. As per the US president, once fully constructed, it would protect the nation from missiles launched from space and land. "Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world, and even if they are launched from space," Trump said."This is very important for the success and even survival of our country," he added. The Republican leader said that the Golden Dome has more expansive goals, and would "deploy next-generation technologies across the land, sea and space, including space-based sensors and interceptors." Meanwhile, Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said that the system would protect "the homeland from cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, hypersonic missiles, drones, whether they're conventional or nuclear."
