Carney Soars Ahead In Poll Numbers; Cost Of Living Top Concern For Canada

Canada election 2025: Carney slight ahead in poll numbers; cost of living top concern for voters

An active volcano has been found to be the keeper of thousands of eggs in Canada. This strange phenomenon is not occurring on land, but deep inside the ocean. Scientists say that these eggs have been laid by the Pacific white skate, a species that is still a mystery to humans.&nbsp;
These eggs were found in a volcano located off the coast of Vancouver Island. Scientists say that the discovery points to a marine ecosystem where the heat from the volcano acts like an incubator for these eggs in the cold waters.
Scientists were astonished to find the mysterious eggs near the volcano, which were first seen in 2019. Till that time, the volcano was believed to be dormant. But an expedition change that and the researchers noticed that a 3,600-foot volcano had a surprisingly suitable environment for marine life. It released warm, mineral-rich waters that helped the eggs hatch.

Notably, the Pacific white skate lives deep inside the ocean. They have been found to swim as deep as 2,600 to 9,500 feet, where it is extremely cold. The skates can grow up to 6.5 feet long. Their eggs are also unusually large, measuring 18 to 20 inches in width. The gestation period is a massive four years. In this scenario, the heat from the volcano is what facilitates the development of the foetus. It acts like an incubator for the eggs and provides the right environment for their growth.
<h2>Volcanoes are a "safe nursery for juveniles"</h2>
Marine biologist Cherisse Du Preez, who led the 2019 expedition to the volcano, says the volcano&rsquo;s shallower summit is like a "coral garden and a safe nursery for juveniles before they descend into the deep."

In 2023, scientists saw a Pacific white skate laying an egg at the volcano in the waters off Vancouver Island. Scientists say that marine species make use of the heat from volcanoes for their eggs. Something similar was found in 2018 near the Gal&aacute;pagos Islands, when eggs over four inches wide were spotted near hydrothermal vents.
The discovery of eggs inside an active volcano has highlighted the relationship between these underwater vents and the marine species. Scientists say that besides the Pacific white skate, several other species also lay eggs in such volcanoes, which act like a natural nursery.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has renewed calls for voters to give him a strong mandate to deal with US President Donald Trump's tariff threat.

Former Indian High Commissioner to Canada, Ajay Bisaria, played down the influence of Khalistani elements on Canadian politics, calling it a &lsquo;disproportionate capture&rsquo; by a vocal and strategically active anti-India group.
Bisaria said that the Khalistani groups have been around for over 40 years, and are unlikely to play a significant role in determining the outcome of the April 28 elections in Canada. &ldquo;There is a certain capture, a disproportionate capture by a very smart and active anti-India Khalistani group. But this is a structural reality in Canadian politics for four decades. We have seen this in operation for a while, and these folks have a certain capture, but this election is not about them. I mean, they will not be a major determinant of the fate of the April 28 elections because I would argue that this election is about Trump,&rdquo; Bisaria said in an interview with ANI.

"Trash the dress" is a popular trend among brides these days. However, it has been around for several years, but has had different variations over time. Today, the trend is a style of wedding photography that has couples getting clicked in off locations that do not go with the vibe of a wedding. The dress can get dirty, so the name "trash the dress" is used.
Until a decade back, the trend literally meant trashing the dress. New brides elaborately destroyed their white dresses and shared the pictures online. It was meant to be a daring celebration of the couple's relationship. However, a bride participating in the trend tragically died while doing so in 2012. Her story is going viral again, 13 years later, when social media trends are again proving fatal.

Carney And Poilievre Trade Barbs About Trump In Canada's Election Debate

Days ahead of Canadian elections, four of Canada&rsquo;s political leaders gathered on Thursday (Apr 18) for a debate during which issues including Canada's immigration curbs, US President Donald Trump's annexation threat, Gaza war, and former PM Justin Trudeau's legacy were discussed. While Liberal Party leader Mark Carney and Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre highlighted the need for continued immigration restrictions, a war of words began between the two over While Liberal Party's economic policies, with Poilievre criticising Carney for being "just like Justin Trudeau."

The other candidates in the debate were Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party and Yves-Fran&ccedil;ois Blanchet, the leader of the Bloc Qu&eacute;b&eacute;cois, a party that promotes Quebec&rsquo;s independence and runs candidates only in that province. Challenges posed by Trump's trade policies and his stance on Canada were discussed at length in the debate. At one point in the debate, it was the three candidates taking on the incumbent Prime Minister Mark Carney, the former central banker of Canada and England took the office last month after being elected the leader of the Liberal Party.
The Canadian federal elections are scheduled for April 28.

<h2>Here are key takeaways from the two-hour debate</h2>
<h3>Legacy of Justin Trudeau</h3>
Justin Trudeau's shadow did not seem to leave Carney as the others in the debate slammed him for being "just another Trudueu." However, Carney sought to distance himself from his predecessor. Poilievre criticized what he called the &ldquo;lost Liberal decade&rdquo; under Trudeau. "Mark Carney is asking for a fourth Liberal term repeating exactly the same Liberal promises that priced you out of the house," Poilievre said.&nbsp;
"It may be difficult for Mr. Poilievre...You spent years running against Justin Trudeau and the carbon tax, and they are both gone...I am a very different person than Justin Trudeau."
<h3>US President Donald Trump's policies</h3>
All the candidates agreed that President Trump&rsquo;s economic policies and his proposal to annex Canada have created a furore and that they would negotiate toughly with the US. But none of them offered any specific details about how they would get the American president to change course. Poilievre blamed the Liberal government for putting Canada &ldquo;under the thumb&rdquo; of the United States. Carney presented himself as a tough negotiator by mentioning his track record as the Governor.

<h3>Immigration&nbsp;</h3>
Speaking on immigration, Carney stated, "The system isn't working, especially after the pandemic. Our population has gone up at about three per cent because of immigration and that's why we need to have a cap for a certain period of time." This cap, according to Carney, would remain in place for "a couple of years". Poilievre advocated for reduced immigration levels to ensure the population doesn't grow faster than available housing, jobs, or healthcare. "I think we should go back to immigration levels so that the population never grows faster than the number of houses, jobs or healthcare available," he said.
<h3>Gaza War</h3>
The New Democratic Party's Jagmeet Singh was the only one to call the war in Gaza as "genocide."&nbsp;Carney described it as "horrific" but did not specifically used the word "genocide." Poilievre said he would cut off foreign aid to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and accused their employees of participating in the attacks of October 7, 2023.
<h3>Building oil and gas pipelines</h3>
Poilievre called for a rapid approval process to build oil and natural gas pipelines across Canada that would enable the country to sell those resources to Europe. Carney also spoke about building more pipelines but said he would create a new single approval process that involves provinces and Indigenous people.&nbsp;
The debate also touched upon other issues, including public safety and security, border security, crime and gangs, among others.&nbsp;
