Canada Prime Minister Mark Carney on Thursday (April 3) announced to respond to Trump's auto tariffs by imposing 25% tariffs on American cars.&nbsp;
He said that Canada is "matching the US approach with 25 per cent tariffs on all vehicles imported from the United States that are not compliant with CUSMA, our North American free trade agreement.&rdquo;
&ldquo;Our tariffs will not affect auto parts because we know the benefits of our integrated production system,&rdquo; Carney said, adding &ldquo;They will not affect vehicle content from Mexico.&rdquo;
He said all vehicles imported from the U.S. that are not compliant with CUSMA (which sets out North American content rules, not solely U.S.-made content rules) will be hit with matching counter-tariffs.

Canada's Prime Minister and US President Donald Trump have spoken to each other over a phone call. The conversation comes at a time of growing rift between the two nations over Trump's tariffs and also his comments about making Canada the 51st state. Donald Trump, has just shared the update on the social media platform Truth Social, where the Republican leader said that it was a very productive conversation and also mentioned that both leaders will meet after Canada's elections. Trump: Will meet Mark Carney after Canada holds elections on April 28

One in five Americans want their state to join Canada, a new poll has revealed. This comes amid US President Donald Trump's continuous warning to make Canada America's 51st state.
The shocking poll showed that only nine per cent of Canadians believe it is likely that Canada will become the 51st US state.
"By contrast, 20 per cent of Americans would like their state to join Canada and become a Canadian province, a proportion that is higher among respondents aged 18 to 34 (30 per cent),&rdquo; a new L&eacute;ger report stated.

It further indicated that just one out of three Americans (35 percent) favour Trump's tariffs on Canadian imports.&nbsp;
Moreover, two-thirds of US respondents expressed concerns over the impact of the tariffs on the prices of grocery items like dairy, eggs and meat.&nbsp;
Leger executive-vice president Andrew Enns said that the US is &ldquo;incredibly polarized&rdquo; and Trump is &ldquo;extraordinarily unpopular&rdquo; to some Americans who would likely relish the opportunity to join Canada.

The polling was done from March 21 to March 24, with a sample of 1,599 Canadians and 1012 Americans via an online panel.&nbsp;

Moreover, two-thirds of US respondents expressed concerns over the impact of the tariffs on the prices of grocery items like dairy, eggs and meat. Top 10 world news: Massive earthquakes hit Myanmar, Thailand; Trump holds call with Canada's PM, and more

It is election season in Canada, and the biggest issue is, believe it or not, Donald Trump. The latest tariffs announced by the United States president have invited some sharp reactions from across the political spectrum. While each may have a different opinion on a deal with Trump, the consensus seems to be to put Canada first and to retaliate if tariffs are imposed. Watch in for more details!

Canada first in focus after Trump's auto tariffs

US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he had a &ldquo;very productive&rdquo; conversation with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, even as tensions between the two countries continue to rise.
&ldquo;I just finished speaking with Prime Minister Mark Carney of Canada. It was an extremely productive call, we agree on many things, and will be meeting immediately after Canada&rsquo;s upcoming Election to work on elements of Politics, Business, and all other factors, that will end up being great for both the United States of America and Canada,&rdquo; Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform.
The statement comes amid a deepening rift between the US and Canada, fuelled by Trump&rsquo;s recent move to impose tariffs and his call for Canada to become the 51st state of the United States.
Speaking a day earlier, Carney criticised the US stance and questioned its reliability as an ally. &ldquo;It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. It is possible that, with comprehensive negotiations, we will be able to restore some trust, but there will be no turning back,&rdquo; he said.
Carney also stressed the need for Canada to reduce its trade dependence on its southern neighbour. &ldquo;We will need to dramatically reduce our reliance on the United States. We will need to pivot our trade relationships elsewhere,&rdquo; he added.
In response to the planned US tariffs on imported vehicles, Carney warned that Canada would retaliate. He temporarily paused his election campaign to take charge of a Cabinet committee focused on relations with the US.
&ldquo;We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada,&rdquo; he stated.

'We agree on many things': Trump touts 'very productive' call with Canada's Mark Carney despite looming trade war

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is expected to hold a conversation with Donald Trump on Friday (28 March), following an outreach from the US president.
Carney, who has not yet spoken to Trump since taking office nearly two weeks ago, confirmed on Thursday that the US President had contacted him the previous evening to arrange a call.
&ldquo;We will be speaking soon, certainly in the course of the next day or two,&rdquo; Carney said. He also stressed the importance of respecting Canada&rsquo;s independence, saying, &ldquo;That&rsquo;s not much to ask, but apparently it&rsquo;s a lot for him.&rdquo;

The two leaders are set to speak amid growing tensions after Trump launched a trade war against Canada and called for it to become the 51st state of the United States.
&ldquo;It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner. It is possible that, with comprehensive negotiations, we will be able to restore some trust, but there will be no turning back,&rdquo; Carney stated.
He also said Canada must begin to reduce its dependence on the US and look to build trade ties with other nations. &ldquo;We will need to dramatically reduce our reliance on the United States. We will need to pivot our trade relationships elsewhere,&rdquo; he added.
Tensions rose further after Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday, introducing a 25 per cent tariff on finished vehicles imported into the US, set to take effect next week.

Carney responded strongly, warning that Canada would hit back if the tariffs were implemented. He stepped away from his election campaign to lead a special Cabinet committee on US relations in Ottawa.
&ldquo;We will fight the US tariffs with retaliatory trade actions of our own that will have maximum impact in the United States and minimum impacts here in Canada,&rdquo; he said.

Canada’s Mark Carney to hold first call with Trump today as Canada warns 'US is no longer a reliable partner'

Old ties with US over, says Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney amid Trump's tariff threats

Ranjani Srinivasan, an Indian student enrolled at Columbia University, who self-deported to Canada after her student visa was revoked for allegedly supporting Hamas, broke the silence about her ordeal on Thursday (March 27).&nbsp;
The 37-year-old Indian PhD student never imagined that her academic journey at the Ivy League university would come to such a drastic end.&nbsp;
She stressed that her university, Columbia University has "let her down", hoping that her enrolment at the university will be restored.&nbsp;

Srinivasan was accused of being a supporter and sympathiser of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. She was about to complete her PhD when US President Donald Trump's administration revoked her student visa for her alleged involvement in propagating and aligning with Hamas.
Her student visa was renewed in December - just a month before Trump's inauguration at the White House.
"I spent five years at Columbia University, working, I don't know, maybe 100 hours a week sometimes. I never expected the institution to let me down. But it did," she told Al Jazeera in an interview.
"I hope Columbia comes to its senses and re-enrolls me," she said, hoping for fairness and justice from an institution of global repute.

"All the requirements for my PhD are complete, and whatever is left, I don't even need to be in the US for it," she said, adding "So, I'm trying to appeal to Columbia" for them to do their bit.
<h2>How was she self deported?</h2>
Srinivasan received an email on March 6 when she woke up in her Columbia-owned apartment from the US consulate in Chennai, informing her that her visa had been cancelled.&nbsp;
She immediately checked the official immigration portal and found confirmation that her visa, which was renewed months earlier until 2029, was no longer valid.
As she panicked, Srinivasan contacted Columbia's International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO).&nbsp;

Later, the office assured her that her student status (I-20) was still intact and scheduled a Zoom meeting for the next day.
The Next day, ten minutes into that Zoom call, there was a knock on her door.&nbsp;
US Immigration and Customs Enforcement were on the door, who without properly identifying themselves, demanded entry, and said they intended to place her in removal proceedings. Her roommate refused to open the door.
&ldquo;I freaked out. Why is ICE at my door?&rdquo; Srinivasan recalled. &ldquo;You live in Columbia housing, a place you&rsquo;d consider safe. The fact that they entered without a warrant was terrifying.&rdquo;
The ISSO adviser on the call, visibly shocked, muted herself to make frantic calls before providing Srinivasan with a list of lawyers. She said Columbia&rsquo;s Public Safety advised her not to open the door but offered little else.
The next day, the agents returned to her door, warning that they would keep coming "every day" until she was placed in removal proceedings.&nbsp;
It was the same day when Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian Green Card holder and protest leader, was arrested from Columbia housing.

&ldquo;That&rsquo;s when I realized I have no rights in this system,&rdquo; Srinivasan said. &ldquo;Columbia knew ICE was operating on campus but seemed uninterested in intervening.&rdquo;
And, by March 9, Columbia revoked her student's status and ordered her to vacate university housing.&nbsp;
However, she did not wait for deportation and with no legal recourse, she packed a single bag, leaving behind her furniture, belongings, and even her cat, Cricket&mdash;and fled to Canada on March 11 using a visitor visa she had previously secured for academic workshops and conferences.
Three days later, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a photo of Srinivasan on X, calling her a "terrorist sympathiser" and claiming that she had "self-deported" using a border control app.&nbsp;
&ldquo;If supporting the idea of human rights or ending a genocide is equated with supporting Hamas, then anyone in proximity to me &ndash; without me having done anything &ndash; can just be picked up and made an example of,&rdquo; Srinivasan said.

The fact that they entered without a warrant was terrifying.” The ISSO adviser on the call, visibly shocked, muted herself to make frantic calls before providing Srinivasan with a list of lawyers. She said Columbia’s Public Safety advised her not to open the door but offered little else. The next day, the agents returned to her door, warning that they would keep coming "every day" until she was placed in removal proceedings. It was the same day when Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian Green Card holder and protest leader, was arrested from Columbia housing. However, she did not wait for deportation and with no legal recourse, she packed a single bag, leaving behind her furniture, belongings, and even her cat, Cricket—and fled to Canada on March 11 using a visitor visa she had previously secured for academic workshops and conferences. Three days later, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted a photo of Srinivasan on X, calling her a "terrorist sympathiser" and claiming that she had "self-deported" using a border control app. “If supporting the idea of human rights or ending a genocide is equated with supporting Hamas, then anyone in proximity to me – without me having done anything – can just be picked up and made an example of,” Srinivasan said. Canadians once topped the list of global travelers to the US, but they are now increasingly keeping away from traveling to the neighbor. The reason: US President Donald Trump's renewed threats on annexing Canada and imposing trade tariffs. Data shows a sharp dip in the number of trips taken by Canadians, both by air and the land route. As for data from Statistics Canada, the country's national statistical agency, Canadians took 13% fewer trips by air to the US in February than they did a year ago.

‘Why didn’t anyone help her?’ Violent attack on Indian origin woman in Canada sparks debate on social media

Election fever has kicked in for Canada after the new prime minister formally announced snap elections that will be taking place on April 28th. In just over one month, Canada will elect a new government at a time when the country is embroiled in a trade and territorial standoff with the United States.

Can Mark Carney secure another mandate for the Liberal Party?

Still in the United States, the rift between the executive and the judiciary has extended to law firms as well. After spending months in the headlines for his own trials, Donald Trump is now targeting legal firms and lawyers that have filed cases against his presidential decisions.

Canada&rsquo;s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has announced a snap election set for 28 April, just nine days after taking office. The move comes in response to mounting threats from US President <a href="https://www.wionews.com/donald-trump" rel="dofollow">Donald Trump</a>, including a proposed trade war and suggestions that Canada should become America&rsquo;s 51st state.
<h2>'President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country'</h2>
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday (March 23), Carney accused Trump of attempting to undermine Canadian sovereignty.
&ldquo;President Trump claims that Canada isn't a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen,&rdquo; Carney said.

He added, &ldquo;We&rsquo;re over the shock of the betrayal, but we can never forget the lessons. We have to look out for ourselves. We have to look out for each other.&rdquo;
Carney said the decision to call an early election was driven by urgency in the face of US pressure.
&ldquo;We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump's unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;There is so much more to do to secure Canada. To invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada,&rdquo; he added.

During the press conference, Carney was asked about his approach to dealing with Trump and US-Canada relations. He responded that he is &ldquo;fully able to stand up&rdquo; to the American president.
However, Carney added that there are clear conditions for engaging in dialogue with Trump. &ldquo;He has to say it and accept it,&rdquo; referring to Canada&rsquo;s status as a sovereign nation. Only then, Carney said, could discussions on a new trade agreement move forward. As of now, the two leaders have not spoken since Carney was sworn in.
Trump has repeatedly targeted Canada in recent statements. In a Fox News interview, he claimed, &ldquo;Canada was meant to be the 51st state because we subsidise Canada by $200 billion a year.&rdquo;

Trump has repeatedly targeted Canada in recent statements. In a Fox News interview, he claimed, “Canada was meant to be the 51st state because we subsidise Canada by $200 billion a year.” Also read: Who is Mark Carney? Canadian PM Mark Carney calls for snap election on April 28

Canada&rsquo;s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has called a snap general election for 28 April just nine days after taking office. The move comes as Canada faces growing tensions with US President Donald Trump over trade and sovereignty.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve just requested that the Governor General dissolve Parliament and call an election for April 28. She has agreed,&rdquo; Carney announced on Sunday, referring to Mary Simon, the representative of King Charles III in Canada.

Explaining the sudden decision, Carney pointed to what he described as an urgent national crisis driven by President Trump&rsquo;s actions.
&ldquo;We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump&rsquo;s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty,&rdquo; Carney said.
&ldquo;There is so much more to do to secure Canada. To invest in Canada, to build Canada, to unite Canada,&rdquo; he added.

Carney has accused the US president of destabilising Canada through punitive economic measures, including the imposition of 25% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminium, and threats of further tariffs on all Canadian goods from 2 April.
&ldquo;We needed to act because of Donald Trump&rsquo;s tariffs,&rdquo; Carney said.&nbsp;
The snap election follows Carney&rsquo;s recent selection as Liberal Party leader, replacing Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation in January but remained in office until a new leader was chosen earlier this month.

The opposition Conservatives had initially hoped to centre the election around Trudeau&rsquo;s declining popularity due to inflation and immigration concerns. However, the upcoming vote is now expected to focus on who is best positioned to handle the challenges posed by Trump&rsquo;s presidency.
Carney&rsquo;s tried to tap into the growing wave of nationalism across Canada, driven by President Trump&rsquo;s repeated attacks on the country&rsquo;s sovereignty. The surge in national sentiment has helped boost support for the Liberals in recent polling.
In a post on social media, Carney described the upcoming vote as a defining moment for the nation. &ldquo;The next election will be one of the most consequential in our lifetimes,&rdquo; he wrote.
