Gravitas: Anti-CAA Protests: 28 people receive notices in Rampur district

Reactions have been coming in from across the world ever since India had passed the Citizenship Amendment act. Indian origin Canadian lawmaker Jagmeet Singh had also joined the chorus of anti-CAA voices. He criticised the CAA act and said that it is wrong and should be denounced. He wrote on Twitter: "The Indian government's new Citizenship Amendment Law purposely discriminates Muslims & other minority communities. It is wrong & should be denounced. At a time of rising hate & polarization, governments should work to unite people, not divide them". #CitizenshipAmendmentAct #CAA #CAAProtest #JagmeetSingh

A Delhi Court reserved till December 28 the verdict on a bail petition moved by fifteen accused who were arrested after a protest in Delhi's Daryaganj area against the amended citizenship Act turned violent last week.

Sessions Judge Satish Kumar heard the bail plea of the nine accused today and later reserved the verdict.

The Delhi Police had arrested 15 people and detained 40 on December 20 after police and protestors clashed in the area. All the 15 accused were then sent to 14-days judicial custody.

Initially, six accused moved the court seeking bail. On their petition, the court had issued a notice to the Delhi Police and slated the matter for hearing to December 28.

The other nine approached the court seeking bail later. Advocate Siddharth Aggarwal, representing the nine accused, told the court that the case of 436 [mischief] cannot be made against his clients.

"Police can call all the accused to police stations for questioning. What is the need to keep them in judicial custody?" he questioned.

Additional Public Prosecutor (APP), however, opposed the bail plea by asserting that the case is in the initial stage and the police are awaiting the Medicolegal Case (MLC) report.&nbsp;

Salman Khan’s ‘Dabangg 3’ has not been able to dominate the box office as the leading star of Bollywood would expect it to be but he has no qualms about it.&nbsp;

Recently talking about the medium income that the film has earned since December 20 when it released in the theatres, Salman Khan reflected that these are “troubled times” as he said, “In such troubled times (for the film) to do well is remarkable. All the credit goes to fans. And fans have been very loyal to me and they have gone (to see the film).

He added, “In North India, section 144 was imposed and so those collections have not come. But they will go and see the film. I mean, first, it is their security and then comes Dabangg 3. In other states, we have done pretty well.”

There have been nationwide protests for over a week now in India against the Citizenship Amendment Act. People have flooded the streets ever since the Act was passed in the Indian parliament with people calling it “discriminatory towards one particular religion”.&nbsp;

‘Dabangg 3’ has so far collected more than Rs 90 crores in over four days of it running on the theatres. It features Sonakshi Sinha and debutant Saiee Manjrekar who play important roles. Arbaaz Khan also features in the film. <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/dabangg-3-salman-khan-starrer-collects-rs-8115-crore-in-three-days-269759">This is how much it collected in three days.&nbsp;</a>

Salman has been happy with the overall response to the third film from the franchise. He said, “Because of Dabangg one, came two and now three, which is one of the better films. It is bigger, larger and there is more to say in this film. Sudeep is appreciated, the husband-wife bond is stronger, his back story, the innocence of how he became Chulbul Pandey. There was lot more to say in this film.”

“We have touched upon so many things like child marriage, dowry, water conservation. The whole film is on this plot that if you love someone but if they don’t, then will you rape them, throw acid or kill them?” added the actor.&nbsp;

Salman is not the first actor from ‘Dabangg 3’ to comment on the ongoing protests in the country that have translated to average collections for their film as Sonakshi Sinha too said,<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/sonakshi-sinha-caa-protest-is-more-important-dabangg-3-right-now-269741"> “CAA protest is more important than 'Dabangg 3' right now.”</a>

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday paid his tribute and commemorated former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's 95th birth anniversary. On the occasion, the prime minister unveiled former PM's statue at Lucknow's Lok Bhawan, laid the foundation stone of a university and launched a scheme in New Delhi. While speaking at events in Lucknow and New Delhi, the prime minister touched upon a range of issues - from anti-CAA protests to tackling the water problem in the country. Appeal for calm Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday appealed for calm and asked people not to listen to rumours with respect to the Citizenship Amendment Act. "Don't resort to violence. People listened to rumours and rumour-mongering fueled violence," the prime minister said during his address in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The prime minister said that issues like Article 370 and Ram temple in Ayodhya have been "resolved peacefully" in the country. Citizens' responsibility PM Modi asked people to introspect if damaging public property in the name protest was right. He said it is the citizens' responsibility to take care of the public property. "People who damaged public property and were involved in violence in the name of protests in UP, should introspect if what they did was right," he said. "A secure atmosphere is our right but it's also the duty of the citizens to respect the work of police," he said. Tackling water issues Outlining the importance of water management, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said that 'New India' will have to work together to tackle water issues."New India should come to work together to deal with every situation of the water crisis. For this, we are working together on five levels," he said after inaugurating the Atal Bhujal Yojana in New Delhi to mark the 95th birth anniversary of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Hail Atal Ji! The prime minister unveiled a statue of former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Lucknow's Lok Bhawan today. He also paid his tribute to the former PM on the occasion of his 95th birth anniversary. "Atal ji used to say that life has to be seen in totality, not in pieces. The same is true for the government, the same is true for good governance. Good governance is also not possible until we think of the problems in totality," PM Modi said in Lucknow. 'Ayushman Bharat' The prime minister also said that around 70 lakh people have benefitted from the Ayushman Bharat--Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) health insurance scheme. Speaking at the foundation laying ceremony of Atal Bihari Medical University in Lucknow, Prime Minister Modi termed Ayushman Bharat as the "world's largest scheme". "In less time, 70 lakh people have benefitted from this scheme... Out of this, around 11 lakh people are from Uttar Pradesh," Prime Minister Modi said."The Central government`s road map for the health sector is -- first, working on preventive healthcare; second is expanding affordable healthcare, and the third is the supply side interventions, which means ensuring supply in view of every demand of this sector, and fourth is the mission mode intervention," the PM said. Citizens' responsibility is to take care of public property: Highlights of PM Modi's address

Kangana Ranaut came out strong in criticising the violence and destruction of public property amid the ongoing anti-CAA protest across India.&nbsp;

While speaking at the<a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/panga-trailer-kangana-ranauts-kabbadi-drama-looks-powerful-and-relevant-269857"> trailer launch event of her new film 'Panga'</a> in Mumbai on Monday, the actress Kangana Ranaut said that indulging in violence is not a very reasonable thing to do, in a democracy like India.

"What gives you the right to burn buses, trains and create ruckus in the country? A bus costs around Rs 70-80 lakh, and that is not a small amount. Have you seen the condition of people in our country? People in this country are dying of hunger and malnutrition. It is not very reasonable for people to indulge in violence," said Kangana.

"I also feel that in the name of democracy -- this is my very personal opinion -- we`re still hooked to the pre-Independence era, where our country was under seige or bondage, and people had captured us by force or the gun. Going on strikes, shutting down the country or not paying taxes against those people was considered cool. But in today`s democracy, your leader is someone from among you. He is not from Japan or China or someplace else," said Kangana Ranaut at the event.&nbsp;

The event also has the film`s director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari, co-actor Jassi Gill and composers Shankar Mahadevan and Loy Mendonsa in attendance.&nbsp;

Seeking support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, she said: "Our leader came from a very small place and with a lot of difficulties made something of himself with hard work, and we have won on his merits and he has written everything in his manifesto and then won, and now when he is fulfilling everything he promised, that`s democracy, is it not? So this doesn`t happen, you cannot be a sore loser."

'Panga' is a sports drama that also features Richa Chadha, Neena Gupta and Pankaj Tripathi. The story depicts the struggle of a Kabaddi player.

Talking about title 'Panga' (which means, to mess around with something), and her experience of messing around with life, Kangana said, "I think every time in my life I took `panga`, I achieved growth. When I was 15 years old, I ended up taking `panga` with my father and that was the most stupid thing to do. It led to a lot of problems in life. But essentially if I hadn`t gone ahead and taken that `panga`, I wouldn`t have been here, where I am now. So every `panga` has given a new landmark in my life. I wouldn`t exchange where I am today for anything."

'Panga' is set to theatrically release on January 24, for the Republic Day weekend.

So this doesn`t happen, you cannot be a sore loser." 'Panga' is a sports drama that also features Richa Chadha, Neena Gupta and Pankaj Tripathi. I wouldn`t exchange where I am today for anything." 'Panga' is set to theatrically release on January 24, for the Republic Day weekend.

A day after Kangana Ranaut came out strongly at protestors for destroying buses and public property, Delhi's deputy CM Manish Sisodia on Tuesday took to Twitter to school the actress about taxes.&nbsp;

While speaking at the trailer launch event of her new film 'Panga' in Mumbai, Kangana had said that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/kangana-ranaut-on-caa-protests-not-reasonable-for-people-to-indulge-in-violence-269863">only a few people pay tax </a>in India while rest are dependent on them. "What gives you the right to burn buses, trains and create ruckus in the country? A bus costs around Rs 70-80 lakh and that is not a small amount," the actress had said.&nbsp;

"We`re still hooked to the pre-Independence era, where our country was under siege or bondage, and people had captured us by force or the gun. Going on strikes, shutting down the country or not paying taxes against those people was considered cool,"Kangana had added.&nbsp;

Giving her a lesson in basic economics, the Delhi Finance Minister explained to her that even a daily wage earner has to pay indirect taxes, if not direct.

In a series of tweets, Sisodia said, "Violence and damage to public property is wrong in every situation, it is against both humanity and law. ..But this country is not dependent on tax of only 3 per cent people. Every person in the country pays a tax, from a daily wage worker, even a daily wage labourer to a billionaire."

Sonakshi Sinha: CAA protest is more important than 'Dabangg 3' right now

DMK President MK Stalin on Monday led the opposition charge from Tamil Nadu against the Citizenship Amendment Act(CAA). Stalin led an anti-CAA rally in Chennai, joined by leaders and cadre of their alliance parties. Stalin was joined by senior DMK functionaries and MDMK Leader Vaiko, Congress Leader P.Chidambaram and leaders of Left parties in the nearly 2km march towards the Rajarathinam Stadium in Chennai’s Egmore.

The top rung leaders held anti-CAA placards, demanding its withdrawal, while the party cadre chanted slogans against the contentious act and waved their respective party flags. Over 5000 Police personnel were deployed in the locality, as the rally was held without the requisite Police permission. The major opposition towards the CAA has been the exclusion of Muslims and particularly in Tamil Nadu the issue of Sri Lanka not being categorized as a neighbouring country, provision of citizenship for Sri Lankan Tami refugees has come to fore.&nbsp;

Late Sunday evening, the Madras High Court had directed that DMK's rally against the Citizenship Amendment Act be captured on video if the party went ahead with it despite Police permission being denied. It gave the interim direction in response to PILs that were filed opposing the rally. This was done after the Tamil Nadu government counsel informed that Police have denied permission, as there was no firm commitment from the organizers on taking responsibility in case of any violence and damage to property.

Right from the time, it was being debated in parliament the DMK and their allies’ parliamentarians had expressed their vehement opposition to the then CAB. After the bill was passed the DMK went on the offensive against the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, whose MPs along with those of PMK had voted in favour of the bill in the Rajya Sabha (Upper house of parliament). The AIAMDK and PMK are allies of the BJP and had joined the NDA ahead of the 2019 General Elections.&nbsp;

“The Indian Constitution is secular and the government cannot enact any law that will discriminate against people based on religion. By excluding the Sri Lankan Tamils, the BJP has shown that it is not only against the Muslims but also the Sri Lankan Tamils” Stalin said during an agitation in Kanchipuram district in the previous week.&nbsp;

However, on various occasions, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami had assured the people that the AIADMK would ensure that no harm would occur to the minority communities and how the CAA was not a threat to Indian citizens, irrespective of their religion. In a statement, he also mentioned that rumours were being spread across the Muslim community and urged the citizens to not fall for false propaganda. The statement also emphasized that the Chief Minister had personally met the Prime Minister and Home Minister to provide dual citizenship for Sri Lankan Tamils.

The CAB (it was known as Citizenship Amendment Bill before being passed) has been a talking point in India, ever since it was tabled in the Parliament over three weeks ago. The CAA grants citizenship to refugees from Hindu, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist and Parsi communities fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, who arrived in India until December 31, 2014. After it was passed by both houses of Parliament and received the assent of the President of India, the bill has seen opposition from students, celebrities, academicians and opposition parties, besides protests that occurred in various parts of the country have turned violent.

The top rung leaders held anti-CAA placards, demanding its withdrawal, while the party cadre chanted slogans against the contentious act and waved their respective party flags. Over 5000 Police personnel were deployed in the locality, as the rally was held without the requisite Police permission. The major opposition towards the CAA has been the exclusion of Muslims and particularly in Tamil Nadu the issue of Sri Lanka not being categorized as a neighbouring country, provision of citizenship for Sri Lankan Tami refugees has come to fore. Right from the time, it was being debated in parliament the DMK and their allies’ parliamentarians had expressed their vehement opposition to the then CAB. After the bill was passed the DMK went on the offensive against the AIADMK government in Tamil Nadu, whose MPs along with those of PMK had voted in favour of the bill in the Rajya Sabha (Upper house of parliament). The AIAMDK and PMK are allies of the BJP and had joined the NDA ahead of the 2019 General Elections. “The Indian Constitution is secular and the government cannot enact any law that will discriminate against people based on religion. By excluding the Sri Lankan Tamils, the BJP has shown that it is not only against the Muslims but also the Sri Lankan Tamils” Stalin said during an agitation in Kanchipuram district in the previous week.

Anti-CAA protests in UP: 879 arrested, 15 dead, 5000 in preventive custody

“Am I a Hindu or a Muslim?”
“What do you think?”
“I don’t know. Maybe a Muslim.”
“Why do you say so?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why do you ask?”
“My judo teacher asked me.”

The boy asking the question is six and a half years old. This conversation happened a week ago. It has been bothering me since. We never needed religion as a qualifier. So we never told him what his religion was. We’ve long pulled up the judo teacher for asking the question. But that’s not even the point. He’s not an evil bigot. He’s just another person, unwittingly offensive. This is an unacceptable yet casual question in India — a secular country with a majority that harbours the angst of perceived wrongs and a minority that has forever been used as a political pawn.

The makers of India’s constitution wanted a secular state but the biggest proponents of secularism, Nehru and Ambedkar, did not allow the word secular to be part of the Preamble. The debate is worth revisiting. The crux is this — for the state to truly distance itself from religion, as secularism demands, there should be no recognition of minority on the basis of religion, no reservation, no muslim personal law, no directive principle for protection of cows. In the Indian context such detachment was hard to achieve. So it was agreed to drop the term, than to “fraudulently” use it. It was only inserted much later by Indira Gandhi in 1976 through unconstitutional means. The preamble was amended without a debate in Parliament.

This unsettled debate is manifesting itself today, seven decades since Independence. Secularism in India is an ideal that has been pursued but not truly achieved. It has systematically been abused for political gain. The confusion and lack of consensus has come back to bite us. The repressed Islamophobia of India is revealing itself and it makes a sorry picture. It is easy to blame a party or its leaders, but who put them there? They never hid what they stood for. Perhaps Indians hid what they really stood for, or were wary of expressing themselves. And so it is important to view this protest beyond the binaries.

India is not a monolith. There are many Indias, many ideologies and beliefs that clash and co-exist. One India is protesting today. On the streets and on social media. Another India is supporting this law. And a third, perhaps much bigger India, is watching from the sidelines. Most of these people have no political agenda, no real understanding of the subject and no direct stakes in this battle of ideologies. They’re trying to make sense of the frenzy, to fathom the full import of what’s happening. The questions are confounding.

Is India sliding into a majoritarian abyss? Is this politically stimulated hype? Are the policemen devils? The pictures show them raining lathis on hapless protestors. The pictures also show them pouring tea for people on a cold Delhi evening. The pictures show people pelting stones at them. And yet others show a muslim cop telling a lady to let him do his job. So many protestors have sustained head injuries. Why are the police hitting children? What were the children doing at a protest site? Should children not be allowed to protest? At what age do you qualify? Why detain journalists? Why say things like “identifying people by their clothes” in such a volatile situation? Isn’t protest a basic right of every citizen? Isn’t civil disobedience the bedrock of Indian democracy? But what justifies violence? Should police not do their duty? Who are the people indulging in violence? It’s so vitiated now, with so many conflicting versions that sifting the “truth” is well nigh impossible.

But here’s what can be done. The government has every right to pass laws, even controversial ones. They did not do it on the sly. They followed due procedure, got it passed in Parliament. What they seem to have forgotten is the universal mantra of democracy - “a government of the people, for the people, by the people.” And that includes all people. When they complain listen to them, don’t discredit them. When they break the law, investigate and punish them. Don’t&nbsp;pander to their basest emotions, don’t exploit their anxieties.

Reach out. Restore peace.
