Bazball was the ‘most-talked-about’ thing before the start of the first Ashes Test, and going by how things panned out in both innings, it lived-up to the hype. Contrary to how the previous Ashes began for England, wherein Mitchell Starc clean bowled opener Rory Burns on the first ball of the 1st Test in Brisbane, Zak Crawley hammered Cummins for a four on the first ball this time.

While Australia, who won the Test, scored at 3.20 runs per over across five days, England scored at an impressive 4.61 runs per over across both innings.

"I think we played our style, which is to try and take the game forward," Brendon McCullum said after the Edgbaston Test loss. "I thought Australia were happy playing their style as well, which ultimately led to success for them, and I'm sure they'll continue with those tactics right throughout the series. I think it's set up to be quite a fascinating contest."

The former Kiwi skipper added though they would have loved to win, one thing that happened with this loss is their style of play - ‘Bazball’ got validated.

"Obviously, you'd rather have won the game - that's just the nature of sport sometimes - but I thought the way that we played, I think it's validated our style of play as well. If we'd have got a little bit of the rub of the green then we might have been on the other side of it,” McCullum added.

IPL 2023: Venkatesh Iyer breaks the jinx, becomes 1st KKR batter since Brendon McCullum in 2008 to hit a ton

England test head coach Brendon McCullum's association with a betting company is under scrutiny, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Friday.

The former New Zealand captain appears in advertisements for 22Bet India, a Cyprus-registered online bookmaking company.

The ECB's anti-corruption codes prohibit players, coaches and officials from participating in or encouraging betting on matches.

"We are currently exploring the matter and in discussions with Brendon around his relationship with the Cypriot-based betting company, 22Bet," an ECB spokesperson said in a statement.

"We have rules in place around gambling and will always seek to ensure these are followed."

McCullum's association with the company began before he took over the England job last year but he has been seen in the betting company's recent YouTube adverts around this year's Indian Premier League.

"We are speaking to the ECB about this," McCullum's agent Simon Auteri told the Times newspaper.

"I am not going to comment on anything. We are working through it."

England have enjoyed a stellar run since McCullum took over the reins as head coach of the Test team in June 2022. McCullum and Ben Stokes' partnership has helped England beat New Zealand, India, Pakistan and South Africa in the Test format.

England’s poor run in the early stages of the World Test Championship cycle in 2021 saw them on the back foot in the race for the final. McCullum and Co were one of the best Test teams in 2022 but failed to make the final of the WTC in June at the Oval.

However, the former New Zealand captain will now look to get the better of Australia in the upcoming Ashes series. The first Ashes will start on Friday, June 16, just a week after the WTC final at the Oval and will take place at the iconic Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Having found success on his previous tours of Pakistan and New Zealand, Ben, who made his England debut seven years back, feels more relaxed now and also in a better space in the team. Averaging over 50 at the top of the order in the Test side since his return in December last year, the left-handed batter talked about what goes behind the camera inside the dressing room and how it is influencing everyone and everything.

Calling the experience ‘ridiculously different’, Duckett said how he was made to feel inside the dugout was something he never felt before, and that it made him all the more relaxed.

"It's ridiculously different," Duckett said of his Test experience in the Test set-up. "The way that they make everyone feel is something that I never thought would be the case in Test cricket. It's almost like you're playing a friendly, you're actually going out and playing a Test match and it's that relaxed, and that's how you're going to get players to perform at their best,” the left-hander added as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

"The first thing Baz (McCullum) said to me in Pakistan was: 'Just enjoy it, you're going to get a good run'. To hear that as an opening batsman before your first Test back makes you not nervous and you can go out there and play your way rather than looking for a score.

Realising that Bazball had once become the talk of the town and that with too many people comes too many suggestions, Duckett said the outside noise doesn’t impact what is happening inside the dressing room.

"And I think the big thing in that dressing-room is - whatever the noise is outside that dressing room, no one cares. It's everything in that dressing room and almost you've got that backing, it feels like there's a squad of players now that seems like they're going to keep for a little while, especially while things are going well. Previously, you're fearing for every single game, if you get no runs, you might get dropped the next game," Duckett said.

Currently involved in the away three-match T20Is against Bangladesh – against whom he made his Test debut, Duckett said he’s a mature cricketer now, and probably won’t repeat the same mistake he did back then.

"I've matured as a cricketer. It's realising what works for me, understanding what my strengths are. Seven years ago, I might have tried to hit Shakib [Al Hasan] for six over long-on, now I know all I have to do is hit the ball in front of square leg and it's four runs. The small taste I had back then, I was very young and probably wasn't ready. I think that comes with age and most batters are at their best when they get to the age of 28, 29," he talked about learning from his past experiences.

Having hinted earlier that he might skip the latter stage of the IPL just to return home fit for the extended summer, Stokes has found himself in a dilemma of fulfilling his $1.9m IPL commitment.

McCullum feels Stokes, who is currently enduring a knee injury, needs to be managed well. Talking about the fear of having an injured Stokes at his disposal following the IPL 2023, McCullum said he isn’t worried about Stokes being at CSK because he knows over there they take good care of a player and manage his workload well.

Understanding the gravity of playing for Chennai in the IPL, Stokes is firm in his head of not showing his back to them; however, he also realises the importance of staying fit for the upcoming home Ashes. Caught in the middle of all of this after not being able to put up a 100% performance in the Wellington Test against New Zealand due to discomfort in his knee, Stokes is expected to be available for the IPL 2023 opener against Gujarat Titans on March 31st.

Speaking on this matter, Brendon said Stokes being someone who looks at a bigger picture, would be careful with his fitness given the rigorous IPL schedule, and that Brendon backs CSK management to take good care of the 31-year-old this season.

In fact I look forward to watching him play in it and see, without captaincy as well, the opportunity to play cricket without worrying about everybody else, knowing when he comes back into the fold and leads us into the Ashes campaign he'll have the bit between his teeth and I think we'll be alright.”

Recently, during day three of the first Test between New Zealand and England at the Bay Oval, Stokes surpassed Kiwi legend Brendon McCullum’s record of hitting most sixes in Tests. He achieved this feat during the 49th over of his side’s second innings when he hit debutant Scott Kuggeleijn over fine leg for a six. Though confident about his team's abilities, Anderson added that Australia will look to come hard against England's 'Bazball' strategy.&nbsp;

"Having played against them a lot, I’m sure they’ll try to come back just as hard as they can."

Such has been the effect of England's attacking cricket that Anderson is mulling extending his international cricket.&nbsp;

"I have been around for 20 years and [Stokes'] attacking mindset is making me think differently about the game," he said. "It has been a breath of fresh air and I feel I could carry on for a number of years in this regime."

However, Australian batting mainstay Steve Smith has cast aspersions over the sustainability of the brand of cricket that England have employed in recent times.&nbsp;

South Africa dominated the proceedings in the Test match from the word go as Kagiso Rabada ran riot with a five-wicket haul to dismantle England in their first innings. Thanks to Rabada's sensational spell, South Africa bundled out England for a paltry 165. In reply, the visitors rose on Sarel Erwee's brilliant 73 to post 326 runs on the board in their first innings and take a healthy lead.

South African pacers continued their red-hot form in England's second innings as Rabada and Anrich Nortje picked up five wickets between them to skittle out the hosts for 149 runs and secure a thumping win for South Africa by an innings and 12 runs.

When asked if their fresh aggressive approach, which has been labelled as 'Bazball' cost them the game, McCullum said he felt England were a bit timid and the conditions didn't allow them to play freely in the Test match.

"I thought if anything we were maybe a touch timid. The conditions didn’t allow us to play with that same freedom but that’s cricket, you’ve got to adapt and try to absorb some of that pressure," McCullum&nbsp;said.

England`s cricket team are in desperate need of a lift and new coach Brendon McCullum vowed on Friday to bring some enthusiasm into the camp as he starts his role ahead of the first test against New Zealand at Lord`s next week.

McCullum replaced Chris Silverwood who left the role in February after England were thrashed 4-0 in the Ashes in Australia. The 40-year-old, who scored 6,453 test runs for New Zealand in his playing career, only has coaching experience in the Indian Premier League but was confident he could kickstart a turnaround for a side who have managed one win in their last 17 tests.

"My job will be to try to take away some of the pressures initially, bring in some enthusiasm. Naturally, when there`s some change, guys kind of get a bit of a lift anyway, so hopefully that will translate to performances early as well," McCullum told a media roundtable at Lord`s. "But first I`ve got to have a look around and see where things sort of sit currently and try and identify some areas where we might need to make some changes at times too, but I`m very much looking forward to the challenge."

There has already been a change in hierarchy on the field as Ben Stokes takes over as captain, succeeding Joe Root, who led the side in a record 64 tests over five years but stepped down after the March 1-0 series defeat in West Indies. "You don`t have to be the best of mates, but I think you have to have a real clear sort of vision of where you want the team to go and you both align with that, and then when you have that, then you can try and just fill the gaps. "It`s my job as a coach to fill the gaps for Stokes. I want him to be the most authentic person that he can be, lead the way that he wants to be. There`ll be times where I might have to pull him back and times where I might have to push him forward."

One problem has been how to blend youth with experience, with veteran fast bowlers James Anderson and Stuart Broad recalled to the side following their absence from the West Indies series. McCullum said he would sit down and chat to both about their future plans but that they would still be valuable assets on and off the field.

"We should enjoy the fact we`ve got 280 test matches sitting in our bowling unit and guys who have been there and done it before. It would be great if they were at the forefront of the next kind of development on the side," he said. Asked if he could lead England to being the number one test side in the world, McCullum pleaded for patience. "Yeah, definitely. That`s what we`re all aspiring to do. I think it`s going to take a bit of time and we should hopefully get a natural uplift and results straight away and New Zealand`s a good cricket team, but if we play properly, we`ll give ourselves a good chance," he said.
