The United States air safety regulator on Saturday (Jan 6) temporarily grounded certain&nbsp; Boeing 737 MAX 9 aircraft for safety checks&nbsp;a day after one of the airplane's window panels blew out over the state of Oregon post takeoff.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) "is requiring immediate inspections of certain Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes before they can return to flight," the agency said in a post on X.

The agency estimates that approximately 171 planes would be impacted globally and that each inspection would last four to eight hours.

"Safety will continue to drive our decision-making," the FAA statement said.

Alaska and United Airlines operate the most MAX 9 aircraft. Boeing has so far delivered around 218 737 MAX 9 planes, the company told news agency AFP.

"Following tonight's event on Flight 1282, we have decided to take the precautionary step of temporarily grounding our fleet of 65 Boeing 737-9 aircraft," Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci said in a statement on Friday.

"Each aircraft will be returned to service only after completion of full maintenance and safety inspections," he said.

<h2>Investigation underway</h2>

The National Transportation Safety Board, FAA and Alaska Airlines released a statement respectively saying that they were probing the rare incident.

"While this type of occurrence is rare," the airline said in a statement, "our flight crew was trained and prepared to safely manage the situation."

Boeing, in a post&nbsp;on its official X account, stated that it was collecting more information about the incident and that a technical team was available to assist the investigation.

The posts on social media showed a window and a portion of a side wall missing on the airplane, and oxygen masks deployed.

The flight reportedly&nbsp;faced severe depressurisation that caused the ejection of a large window section and an unoccupied seat. A child's shirt was seen ripped off due to the impact of the air at an altitude of 16,300 ft.&nbsp;

US airline grounds entire fleet of Boeing 737 Max 9 planes after mid-air incident

A ‘loose bolt alert’ has been issued for Boeing 737 Max passenger aircraft fleet worldwide, prompting at least three airline operators in India to carry out checks in their 737 Max planes.

The urgent advisory was issued after an undisclosed international airline discovered a bolt with a missing nut while performing routine maintenance.&nbsp;

USA’s Federation of Aviation Administration (FAA) has also asked airlines to check for a possible loose bolt in the rudder control system.

Boeing says it has delivered more than 1,370 of the 737 Max jets to global operators, including three Indian airlines—Akasa, Air India Express and SpiceJet.

"In such cases, mitigation as recommended by the Original Equipment Manufacturers is carried out by the airline operator as has been done in the past in respect of 737 Max," it added.

<h2>What prompted Boeing to issue the alert?</h2>

The alert was issued following the discovery of a bolt with its nut missing. The company also discovered an additional undelivered aircraft with an improperly tightened nut.

<h2>Response from Indian airlines</h2>

A spokesperson of Akasa Air said they were alerted by Boeing over the issue.

"Like all operators around the world, and in accordance with our highest standards of safety, Akasa will be following the same checks and procedures that the manufacturer or regulator recommends. Our operating fleet and deliveries are not impacted so far," a statement said.

Vietnam Airlines reaches $7.8bn deal with US Boeing, confirms White House

American defence and aerospace giant Boeing has commenced production of the Apache AH-64E attack helicopters for the Indian Army in its facility in Mesa, Arizona.

In 2020, Boeing completed deliveries of 22 Apache E-model helicopters for the Indian Air Force and undertook the contract to manufacture six AH-64E helicopters for the Indian Army. The delivery of the Indian Army's Apaches is scheduled for 2024, the company said.&nbsp;

The AH-64E is the contemporary version of the Apache AH-64A, which was delivered to India in 1984.

According to Boeing, more than 1,280 Apaches are in operation and they have accumulated over 5 million flight hours, which includes 1.3 million flight hours in combat.

The firm has delivered more than 2,700 AH-64 Apache attack helicopters, it said.

“The advanced technology and proven performance of the AH-64 will enhance the Indian Army's operational readiness and strengthen its defence capabilities,” said Salil Gupte, President, Boeing India.

In January this year, India-based Tata in a joint venture with Boeing, delivered the Indian Army's first AH-64 Apache fuselage from its advanced facility in Hyderabad. The fuselage is the central, tube-shaped structure of the aircraft.

This comes as Boeing has reportedly feared the loss of billions of dollars of NASA revenue. Wilson claims that after the company provided Boeing with the designs for a unique torque wrench,&nbsp;the latter cancelled the former’s contract. However, according to Wilson, Boeing continued to use its intellectual property without “full instructions” on how to build or install it.&nbsp;

Wilson has accused Boeing of creating “critically deficient in quality and performance,” versions of their design, adding that these “mismatched” tools may have caused or contributed to dangerous leaks which had delayed the launch of the SLS rocket, reported Sky News.&nbsp;

The lawsuit also said that Boeing was able to earn billions of dollars in revenue because of the “infringement of Wilson’s trade secrets.” It added that Boeing must turn over “all revenues and profits Boeing has obtained as a result.”&nbsp;

The lawsuit then claims that &nbsp;Boeing went on to blame the leaks which could endanger astronauts on Wilson’s design. “Boeing has not only stolen our intellectual property and damaged our company's reputation but has used the technology incorrectly and at the expense of astronauts' safety, which is beyond despicable,” said founder and president, David Wilson, as quoted by Sky News.&nbsp;

However, this is not the only project that two aerospace companies had collaborated on and in relation to a somewhat similar allegation Wilson said Boeing stole trade secrets related to bolt installation tools for its 787 Dreamliner aircraft which the Colorado-based company was asked to design in 2012.

Boeing's first crewed space launch faces another delay due to safety issues

US aviation major&nbsp;Boeing has delivered more jets in the first quarter of 2023 than its European rival Airbus, media reports said.&nbsp;

The US firm delivered 130 aircraft in the first quarter, which corresponds to January-March 2023. This is a 37 per cent increase from last year. On the other hand, Airbus saw a 9 per cent drop in its delivery compared to 2022, while shipping 127 aircraft in the first three months of 2023.

The month of March, in particular, was significant for the US plane maker as it delivered 64 planes, which is nearly half of the quarterly numbers announced for the first quarter. In the same month, Airbus delivered 61 jets, three less than Boeing.&nbsp;

This is the first time in nearly five years that the US plane maker has beaten its European rival in terms of deliveries, a Bloomberg report noted. Back then, Airbus faced engine shortages for its a320neo airliners. In 2023, a shortfall in deliveries to China's airlines is being cited as a reason for the dip in Airbus' deliveries.&nbsp;

For Boeing, the Q1 result is like a shot in the arm. The US plane maker has faced several supply chain disruptions due to the Covid pandemic, the Ukraine war, and the 2022 lockdown in China. The disruptions in the supply chain impacted the delivery timelines of the US-based aviation company.&nbsp;

Reacting to the criticism of slower deliveries, a Boeing executive was quoted by Reuters as saying that increasing production after COVID-19 lockdowns was "not as easy as an on/off switch."

Boeing is betting on its 737 aircraft and its higher variant 737 MAX -- both are considered cash cows for the company -- for growing sales and revenue. According to a Bloomberg report, Boeing is laying plans to hike output at its Seattle factory by 23 per cent by June 2023.&nbsp;

However, Boeing is likely to face tough competition from Airbus. Media reports said that the European plane maker will ramp up its assembly line in China to boost production. Airbus aims to deliver 720 aircraft this year.&nbsp;

Boeing has a target of delivering 400 737 MAXs aircraft and 70 787s in 2023. Media reports suggest that Boeing is likely to meet its targets for 737 MAX deliveries. But with just 11 787s delivered in the first three months, it is still far from&nbsp;reaching the delivery target.&nbsp;

For the first time in five years, Boeing beats Airbus in deliveries

Boeing has been bitten by Airbus in delivering more planes for the first time since 2018. This is good news for the US manufacturer as it shows that the production capacity is back on the track after a tough time during the pandemic in the first quarter which is from January to March 2023.

He also spoke about how the South Asian region is expected to remain the fastest-growing market globally over the next several years.

Gupte also seemingly hailed the government’s move to let the Tata Group take over Air India and said it will transform the Indian aerospace industry. This comes months after the now Tata Group-owned Air India placed an order of 470 planes with both Boeing and European aviation giant&nbsp;Airbus. Speaking about the order, Gupte said, it is a massive deal for India as a nation and that the country is getting representation on the global stage, reported PTI.&nbsp;

Boeing’s India president also said that considering the country’s air traffic growth, the focus should be on making infrastructure robust, both hard infrastructure which includes airports as well as critical infrastructure, which includes pilots and so on.&nbsp;

India is a huge market for Boeing's narrow-body aircraft, said Gupte adding that at least 90 per cent of the market in the next two decades&nbsp;is going to be a narrow body market and "we expect we will be successful in competing for those every single campaign (aircraft order).”

“India is the gateway like China and once it will grow to be (in) the top four economies of the world, it will be more than a hub,” said Boeing India’s president, as per PTI, and spoke about how New Delhi will become more than a hub for aviation given its sheer size and scale as the country’s economy grow.&nbsp;

India might require over 30,000 pilots, some 26,000 mechanics in 20 years: Boeing

Saudi Arabia on Monday released an American citizen after he had been imprisoned for more than a year, serving a 19-year sentence, for his old tweets critical of the kingdom's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS). Saad Ibrahim Almadi, a 72-year-old retired project manager who resided in Florida was apprehended in November 2021 while visiting family in the kingdom.&nbsp;

Saudi officials reportedly dropped all charges against&nbsp;Almadi but it was unclear if he would be allowed to travel back to the US, due to a travel ban imposed on him following the prison sentence.&nbsp;

Almadi's son&nbsp;Ibrahim al Madi informed that his father had stayed home with family members based in Riyadh on Monday night.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Almadi was arrested and later convicted regarding 14 of his tweets, over the last eight years where he remained critical of Saudi Arabia and its policies. In one of the tweets,&nbsp;Almadi approved of Washington renaming a street after 'murdered' Washington Post journalist&nbsp;Jamal Khashoggi.&nbsp;

In another tweet,&nbsp;he encouraged fellow Saudis to accept Lebanese citizenship. Some other statements of&nbsp;criticised the Saudi government’s policies and the corruption in the Saudi system.

After Almadi visited the kingdom, the authorities quickly arrested and charged him with harbouring a terrorist ideology, supporting and funding terrorism and&nbsp;attempting to destabilise the kingdom.&nbsp;

As per the press release by Boeing, Riyadh Air is expected to add USD 20 billion to non-oil GDP growth and create over 200,000 direct and indirect jobs in Saudi Arabia.&nbsp;

It is a good news for Saudi Arabia, which is seeking ways to move away from its heavy reliance on oil and trying to diversify its economy. The deal, which also underlines the importance of Riyadh Air’s environmental goals, will support Saudi Arabia's goal of serving 330 million passengers and attracting 100 million visits by 2030.&nbsp;

Riyadh Air to get 72 Boeing Dreamliner airplanes in multi-billion dollar deal

Aircraft manufacturing giant Boeing and defence technology company Shield AI are set to collaborate on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and autonomy for current and future defence programmes. According to a statement released by Boeing on Wednesday (March 8), the two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding "to explore strategic collaboration in the areas of autonomous capabilities and artificial intelligence".&nbsp;

The agreement, signed at the Air Force Association Warfare Symposium in Colorado, will be managed by Boeing Phantom Works. Steve Nordlund, vice president and general manager for Boeing’s Air Dominance organisation, said on Wednesday that the company has continued to leverage "talent from across the enterprise to make great strides in autonomous capabilities and programmes in recent years."

Nordlund added the collaboration with Shield AI would accelerate Boeing's ability to deliver these capabilities to the warfighter.&nbsp;

According to Wednesday's statement, Shield AI has created&nbsp;Hivemind,&nbsp;an artificial intelligence pilot that has flown a variety of aircraft. The defence technology said the AI pilot can enable swarms of drones and aircraft to operate autonomously without GPS, communications or a human pilot in the cockpit.&nbsp;

Shield AI's President and Co-founder Brandon Tseng that an AI pilot is the most strategic deterrent technology since the introduction of stealth aircraft and has proven successful in flying air-combat scenarios. Tseng, a former Navy SEAL, said that integrating Boeing aircraft with his company's AI pilot would redefine what large aircraft, crewed or uncrewed, could do.&nbsp;

"As the world leader in aerospace technology, Boeing has been exceptionally easy to engage with, so we are excited to expand our scope of work to co-develop, productise and bring to market the world’s best AI pilot for large aircraft,” Tseng added.&nbsp;

This is a significant advance from Indigo's earlier exclusive narrow-body jet purchases from Airbus as now India's largest airline plans to purchase passenger aircraft, the news agency reported.&nbsp;

French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire last month said that Airbus was close to landing a big order of "several hundreds aircraft" from Indigo.&nbsp;

During his visit to India for a G20 meeting, the minister said the contract could be signed at the French airshow in Le Bourget in the month of June.&nbsp;

Indigo seems to be right on the track of a fleet renewal spree as it implements its expansion plans. Taking a step forward from its conventional fleet, India's largest airline is now eyeing to also include mid-sized wide-body jets.&nbsp;

And as it gears up to do that, Indigo has two options at its disposal for the mid-sized wide-body jets, Boeing's 787 Dreamliner and the upgraded Airbus A330neo, Reuters said quoting sources.&nbsp;

As far as narrow-body jets are concerned, after proper comparison and consideration, InterGlobe Aviation Ltd owned Indigo can either go with A320neo or with Boeing 737 MAX.

This is not the first time Boeing has had to take such a step over the top-tier but troubled model from the company.

The latest pause is a disappointment for the aerospace giant after it resumed deliveries of the jet in August following a halt of more than a year.&nbsp;

Boeing is "conducting additional analysis on a fuselage component," the FAA said in a statement.

"Deliveries will not resume until the FAA is satisfied that the issue has been addressed. The FAA is working with Boeing to determine any actions that might be required for recently delivered airplanes," the statement added.

Boeing, an aviation major, has said that it "discovered an analysis error" by its supplier related to the planes forward pressure bulkhead during a review. The company said pause in 737 delivered is due to analysis the company is carrying out in this matter.

"There is no immediate safety of flight concern for the in-service fleet," the Boeing spokesperson said, noting that production continues. Boeing does not expect a shift to its production and delivery outlook for the year.

The 787's travails date to late summer 2020, when the company uncovered manufacturing flaws with some jets and subsequently identified additional issues, including with the horizontal stabilizer.

The difficulties curtailed deliveries between November 2020 and March 2021. Boeing suspended deliveries later in spring 2021 after more problems surfaced.

“The first aircraft to arrive will be 25 brand-new Boeing B737-800s and six Airbus A350-900s in the second half of 2023, with deliveries really ramping up in 2025 and beyond. In the meantime, our capacity growth will continue to be supported by the previously announced lease-in of additional narrow-body and wide-body aircraft and the restoration-to-service of the remainder of our grounded fleet," Air India CEO Campbell Wilson said in an email to employees, reported Mint.

Around 450 single-aisle aircraft from the Airbus 320 family and Boeing 737 MAX are included in the total order; these aircraft will be used for local and short-haul international operations. The remaining 90 aircraft, all dual-aisle planes, will travel to Europe and the Americas.

When the Tata family assumed control of the airline, they had paid off around 15 per cent&nbsp;of the struggling airline's 61,562 crore debt. The Tatas, however, claim to have already refinanced the debt they inherited, as per a Hindu BusinessLine&nbsp;report.&nbsp;

The order includes 40 Airbus A350s, 20 Boeing 787s, and 10 Boeing 777-9s widebody aircraft, along with 210 Airbus A320/321 Neos and 190 Boeing 737 MAX single-aisle aircraft. The A350 aircraft will be powered by Rolls-Royce engines, while the B777/787s will use engines from GE Aerospace.

The two leaders expressed satisfaction with the deepening of the India-U.S. Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership. PM Modi is expected to travel to the US in June.

A statement from the White House noted that "this purchase will support over one million American jobs across 44 states, and many will not require a four-year college degree. This announcement also reflects the strength of the U.S.-India economic partnership."

UK PM Sunak and Business and Trade Secretary Kemi Badenoch also welcomed the deal.

"This landmark deal between Air India, Airbus and Rolls-Royce demonstrates that the sky's the limit for the UK's thriving aerospace sector. By building trade ties with growing economic powers like India, we will ensure UK businesses remain at the forefront of global growth and innovation," Sunak stated.

The announcement will create new highly skilled jobs in Wales and Derbyshire, he added.
