<p>Boeing has also confirmed that it will be outsourcing at least one-third of those jobs to Tata Consulting Services (TCS) in Bengaluru, India, as per media reports. Last month, the company also indicated that it would lower “staffing within some support functions” which was meant to enable it to better align resources to support current products and technology development.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Over time, some of our corporate functions have grown quite large. And with that growth tends to come bureaucracy or disparate systems that are inefficient…So we’re streamlining,” said a senior director of communications at Boeing, Mike Friedman, to the Seattle Times. According to the report, there are some 5,800 employees in the company, out of which at least a quarter will be affected, with at least 1,500 jobs cut from finance and up to 400 more in human resources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Additionally, Friedman also spoke about how the planemaker will make sure to hire more production workers and engineers which would ensure the overall growth of Boeing. In 2021, the planemaker had planned to cut more than 150 finance jobs in the US in a bid to simplify its corporate structure and focus on manufacturing and product development.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The TBAL facility in the Indian city of Hyderabad is the global sole source supplier for Apache fuselages and has produced complex aero-structures for Boeing 737 and 777 aircraft. The miniature model of the Apache that was shown at the roll-out event indicates that the Army's choppers would sport a 'desert camouflage' look.</p>

<p>The fuselage rolled out of the Hyderabad plant in India, will be supplied to Boeing's Apache final assembly plant in Mesa, Arizona, for further integration. So far, the TBAL plant in India has supplied more than 190 fuselages.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the firm, more than 90 per cent of the parts used in these aerostructures' assemblies are manufactured within India via more than 100 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) suppliers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>More than 1,275 units of the Apache helicopters are in operation, accumulating more than 4.9 million flight hours globally, of which 1.3 million have been in combat. The Indian Army's six Apaches are the second fleet of Apaches ordered by India, as the Indian Air Force had taken delivery of 22 AH-64-E variants of the Apache chopper in 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India operates four classes of aircraft from Boeing, the C-17 Globemaster III strategic transporter, the P8I Poseidon multi-role maritime mission aircraft, the Chinook heavy-lift helicopter and the Apache attack helicopters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>TBAL's 14,000sqm facility in India employs over 900 engineers and technicians and utilises advanced robotics, automation, and aerospace concepts in its manufacturing processes.</p>

<p>"This delivery positions TBAL and India as an important manufacturing base in overall Boeing operations. We stay committed towards progression of indigenous defence manufacturing with strong focus on the quality and timely delivery," said Sukaran Singh, MD &amp; CEO, Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The inputs, which were caused by faulty data from an underlying sensor, sent the plane's nose down repeatedly, leading to loss of control as the pilots tried to deal with several warnings in the cabin, the report said.</p>

<p>The NTSB, however, in its comments, said that it it found the faulty sensor may have been damaged by a bird strike soon after take-off. This assertion was ignored by Ethiopian investigators.</p>

<p>The Ethiopian report said that the country's inspectors didn't find evidence of in-flight damage to sensor due to physical clues like a dead bird.</p>

<p>The NTSB, however, said the sensor was never recovered at the crash site in spite of a partial search by both sides a week after the accident.</p>

<p>Boeing has previously said the MCAS was a safety feature and the issues identified after the crash of flight 302, which followed one of a similar plane in Indonesia five months earlier, have been rectified.</p>

<p>The NTSB also accused their Ethiopian counterparts of focusing on the contributions of the design issues to the accident at the expense of the crew's own training and reaction to the emergency that arose.</p>

<p>"Discussion of crew resource management and performance were still not sufficiently developed in the draft final report," the NTSB said.</p>

<p>In their report, the Ethiopian investigators found that the crew members were licensed and qualified for flight in accordance with the existing Ethiopian Civil Aviation Rules and Standards, but were startled by the unprecedented change of events and "confusing alerts", and blamed it all on the plane's design.</p>

<p>A Saudi Air Force jet crashed at the King Abdulaziz Air Base training grounds due to a technical breakdown during a routine drill, the Saudi Press Agency reported early Monday.</p>

<p>According to the report which cited a ministry of defence statement, the incident took place on Sunday. The two pilots flying the F-15S fighter jet safely evacuated before the crash in the kingdom’s eastern province.</p>

<p>Brigadier General Turki Al-Maliki, spokesman of the ministry, said that the crew safely ejected and there were no injuries or losses on the ground.</p>

<p>"No injuries or ground damages have been reported…An investigation committee has commenced its tasks to uncover the details and reasons behind this incident," Al Maliki was quoted as saying.</p>

<p>The F-15 Eagle fighter jet is a twin-engine, all-weather tactical fighter aircraft designed by American aerospace firm McDonnell Douglas, which is now part of Boeing.</p>

<p>“Nearly every industry is navigating a broad supply chain, inflation, labour and macro-economic challenges – and we’re certainly no different. We’re realistic about the environment we face and are taking comprehensive action,” said Chief Executive Dave Calhoun in a letter to his employees. He added, “turnarounds take time,” and said, “we have more work to do” and went on to reiterate his confidence in the team.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This loss has also been attributed to supply chain disruptions and its effect on the company’s commercial jet business which is facing delays in the delivery of 737 jets. Boeing reports $3.3 billion loss due to biz hurdles, rise in costs caused by supply disruptions

The report by a Washington-based think-tank, the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, released on Thursday, states that most of the weapon sales involved just four companies — Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon and General Dynamics. The contribution of these four firms was 58 per cent of all the major offers made since Biden assumed office, reported The Guardian.<br />

US arms offers did drop sharply in the first year of the Biden administration, from $110.9bn in the previous year under Donald Trump to just $36bn. The report suggests that the dip could be partly due to a “less aggressive approach” to sales promotion but more likely due to market saturation, since a large volume of deals had concluded during the Barack Obama and Trump presidencies.</p>

<p>It further said, “The concentrated lobbying power of these companies – including a ‘revolving door’ from the Pentagon’s arms sales agency and the leveraging of weapons export-related jobs into political influence – has been brought to bear in efforts to expand US weapons exports to as many foreign clients as possible, often by helping to exaggerate threats.”&nbsp;<br />

The arms offers increased to $65bn as of October, partly due to increased sales to Europe and Asia – “tied to the Pentagon’s focus on ‘great power competition’ with Russia and China”.<br />

“The current US arms policy and practice too often fuel war rather than deterring it. Roughly two-thirds of current conflicts – 34 out of 46 – involve one or more parties armed by the United States,” the report said.</p>

“Of the US-supplied nations at war, 16 received $50m or more worth of US arms between 2017 and 2021. This contradicts the longstanding argument that US arms routinely promote stability and deter conflict,” it added.<br />

Indonesia ranks first in the top recipient of US arms deals as of September, with $13.9bn in offers, while Greece and Germany are next at $10.2bn and $10.1bn. Between Saudi Arabia, Jordan and the United Arab Emirates - the bottom three recipients – total offers between $3.4bn and $4.7bn have been made from January 2021 to September this year, said The Guardian quoting the report.<br />

Lockheed Martin had the largest share in major deals and its weapons accounted for $25.8bn since February 2021 in the deals. Boeing was next with arms deals worth $22.65bn, followed by General Dynamics at $7.7bn since February 2021, including a $6bn offer of M-1 tanks to Poland and $1.7bn worth of heavy armoured vehicles to Australia. Raytheon ranked fourth with deals worth $4.7bn.<br />

“Sales of combat aircraft constituted the biggest payoffs for major contractors, followed by missile defence systems,” the think-tank said.</p>

<p>The report also urged Congress to amend the Arms Export Control Act so that an affirmative congressional vote is required on major deals, instead of the current system that simply necessitates a veto-proof majority to block any arms deal.<br />
It also called on the Biden administration to provide greater transparency on the delivery and use of US arms.</p>

“Arms exporters and the US government routinely cite job creation as a reason to sell weapons to foreign clients. But the number of jobs associated with arms sales is greatly exaggerated … Spending on weapons produces 40 per cent fewer jobs than spending on infrastructure or green energy, and 100 per cent fewer jobs than spending on education,” it said.<br />
<br />
The thinktank recommended a number of policy measures including restricting the revolving door between government and industry in attempts to weaken the control that weapons manufacturers have over arms-transfer decision-making.</p>

<p>Russia's aviation industry will aim to go it alone without the West, using locally built parts to produce 1,000 airliners by 2030 and end reliance on Boeing and Airbus, state-owned engineer Rostec said.</p>

<p>The remarks from Rostec, a vast state corporation headed by a close ally of President Vladimir Putin that includes Russia's only manufacturer of civil aircraft, are the strongest indication yet that the country's aviation sector sees the confrontation with the West as a permanent schism.</p>

<p>The West's imposition of the most severe sanctions in modern history after Moscow sent thousands of troops into Ukraine has forced the biggest change on Russia's economy since the Soviet Union crumbled from 1989 to 1991.</p>

<p>The post-Soviet assumptions of the aviation sector have been turned on their head: foreign aircraft, mainly from Boeing and Airbus, account for 95% of passenger traffic, but sanctions mean there are no spare parts -- and no prospect of any.</p>

<p>Reuters reported in August that Russian airlines, including state controlled Aeroflot, were stripping jetliners to secure spare parts they can no longer buy abroad because of Western sanctions. read more</p>

<p>But Rostec, headed by Sergei Chemezov who worked with Putin in East Germany in the 1980s, sees the upheaval as an opportunity to build a strong, self-reliant aviation industry.</p>

<p>"Foreign aircraft will drop out of the fleet," Rostec said in a written response to Reuters questions about its plans and the situation in Russia's aviation industry.</p>

<p>"We believe that this process is irreversible and Boeing and Airbus planes will never be delivered to Russia," it said.</p>

<p>Rostec has run some of Russia's prime industrial, defence and engineering assets since Putin signed a decree creating the corporation in 2007.</p>

<p>Russian airlines, including Aeroflot, splurged on Boeing and Airbus aircraft as they sought to rebuild their fleets after the chaos of the 1990s. Forging a competitive domestic alternative will be difficult.</p>

<p>The target of building 1,000 airliners by 2030 is "basically impossible", according to aerospace analyst Richard Aboulafia, managing director of U.S.-based AeroDynamic Advisory.</p>

<p>"Even when they could get semiconductors and other vital components from the West, they were having a very hard time producing more than a handful of jets," he said.</p>

<p>By comparison with the new seven-year goal, Russia and the rest of the Soviet Union had only ever built a combined total of around 2,000 large commercial jetliners, he added.</p>

<p>When it comes to modern jets, Russia's only civilian planemaker, Rostec's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) (UNAC.MM), is limited by a lack of models, manufacturing capacity and foreign components.</p>

<p>Half of components and technologies used in the Russian aircraft industry in 2021 originated from foreign countries, according to a document titled: "On the Strategic Directions of Activity in the New Conditions for the Period up to 2030" prepared by the government and seen by Reuters.</p>

<p>Rostec will have to find parts - or make them.</p>

<p>"Our next goal is, in the shortest time, to complete import substitution of those imported parts which were delivered from abroad, for promising aviation projects - SSJ-New and MS-21," Rostec said.</p>

<p><strong>MADE IN RUSSIA</strong></p>

<p>Russia plans to produce 20 fully import-substituted regional jets known as Superjet-New annually from 2024 and 72 new medium-haul MS-21 from 2029, beginning with six in 2024, according to the Russian aviation industry's development plan to 2030, published by the government in June.</p>

<p>Russia is testing its new MS-21 plane with a domestically made PD-14 engine instead of the American-made PW1400G, supplied by Pratt &amp; Whitney.</p>

<p>The MS-21 has been Russia's attempt to break into the main part of the jet market dominated by Airbus and Boeing.</p>

<p>But it is struggling to replace the foreign components of its Superjet, including the SaM-146 engine which was designed by a joint venture with French engine firm Safran&nbsp;and could no longer be produced because of sanctions.</p>

<p>UAC continues to produce Superjets with SaM-146's from stock and is going to deliver about 20 more jets with this engine, Rostec said.</p>

<p>"They will be the last ones where our partner solutions with Safran are used. Then we will install PD-8 engines on this type of aircraft," Rostec said. PD-8 engines are also made in Russia.</p>

<p>"From this year, we don't rely on international cooperation with Western countries," Rostec said. "We can say with confidence that the MS-21 with American-made engines will not be delivered to the Russian market."</p>

<p>From 2022 to 2030 Russia plans to deliver 1,036 passenger planes. That includes 142 Superjet-New and 270 MS-21, as well as 70 turboprop Il-114, 70 medium-haul Tu-214, and 12 wide-body Il-96, designed locally, according to government documents.</p>

<p>"We don't expect sanctions to be eased and we are building our plans based on the existing tough scenario," Rostec said.</p>

<p>The SEC said former Boeing Chief Executive Dennis Muilenburg had also agreed to pay $1 million for settling the allegations.</p>

<p>"In times of crisis and tragedy, it is especially important that public companies and executives provide full, fair, and truthful disclosures to the markets," SEC Chair Gary Gensler said in a statement. He added that Boeing and Muilenburg "failed in this most basic obligation."</p>

<p>The SEC said Boeing and Muilenburg did not admit or deny the SEC’s findings. The regulatory agency said a fund will be established for the benefit of harmed investors.</p>

<p>The SEC charged Boeing and Muilenburg "with making materially misleading public statements" following crashes of Boeing airplanes in 2018 and 2019.</p>

<p>Boeing confirmed the settlement and noted it did not admit or deny wrongdoing. It said it had made "fundamental changes that have strengthened our safety processes" and said the "settlement is part of the company’s broader effort to responsibly resolve outstanding legal matters related to the 737 MAX accidents".</p>

<p>The crashes were linked to a flight control system called the Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System (MCAS). The SEC said, "After the first crash, Boeing and Muilenburg knew that MCAS posed an ongoing airplane safety issue, but nevertheless assured the public that the 737 MAX airplane was as safe as any that has ever flown the skies."</p>

<p>After the second crash, the SEC said, "Boeing and Muilenburg assured the public that there were no slips or gaps in the certification process with respect to MCAS, despite being aware of contrary information."</p>

<p>In January 2021, Boeing agreed to pay $2.5 billion in fines and compensation to resolve a US&nbsp;Justice Department criminal investigation into the 737 MAX crashes.</p>

<p>The Justice Department settlement, which allowed Boeing to avoid prosecution, included a fine of $243.6 million, compensation to airlines of $1.77 billion and a $500 million crash-victim fund over fraud conspiracy charges related to the plane’s flawed design.</p>

<p>In December 2019, Boeing fired Muilenburg after the company clashed with regulators over the timing of the 737 MAX's return to service.</p>

<p>Braving the supply chain constraints, shortage of labour in the aftermath of a global pandemic and relentless quality checks by regulators, Boeing, one of the biggest aviation companies in the world has restarted its delivery of the 787 Dreamliner, for the first time since May 2021.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The twin-engine wide-body aircraft was delivered to American Airlines at Boeing’s North Charleston, South Carolina plant. The company&nbsp;has an additional&nbsp;42&nbsp;787s on order.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Robert Isom, CEO of American Airlines took to Instagram to share the news and stated that it was the first of the nine jets that his company seeks to receive delivery by the end of the year.</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that Boeing's 787 jetliners were grounded in 2020 after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) discovered two manufacturing flaws that threatened to compromise the structural integrity of the plane.</p>

<p>As a safety precaution, Boeing, in August 2020 grounded eight of its Dreamliners and thus started the arduous process to get the aircraft back to full safety. A momentary resumption happened in the spring of next year but soon other discrepancies showed up and the deliveries were halted.</p>

<p>However, as reported by WION, earlier this week, the FAA finally gave its nod and cleared Boeing's path to deliver the plane to its customers.</p>

While the economies around the planet have started to open up, skilled and unskilled labour is still hard to find. Even Boeing is having a tough time assembling the right workers for its aircraft&nbsp; production.&nbsp; "There are a lot of things we can’t get done because we don’t have the people,” added&nbsp;Calhoun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Boeing's competitor Airbus has nudged ahead of it in recent times. If the supply chain constraints are not sorted, the gap is expected to widen further.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The rendezvous of the gumdrop-shaped CST-100 Starliner has been furnished by the Boeing-Lockheed Martin joint venture United Launch Alliance (ULA).</p>

<p>The spacecraft, which is currently home to a seven-member crew, had missed the scheduled time by more than an hour due to technical issues.</p>

<p>Despite the failure of two onboard thrusters and a problem that required ground control to retract its docking system and then re-deploy it, the vessel flew 271 miles (436 km) over the south Indian Ocean off the coast of Australia at 0028 GMT Saturday.</p>

<p>According to Boeing mission commentator Steve Siceloff, "This is all part of the learning process for operating Starliner in orbit."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the US Space agency NASA said in a blog post, "That system operated normally during all of the propulsion system demonstrations, and with redundancies in place, does not pose a risk to the rest of the flight test."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Boeing, which plans a redesign after this week's flight, ultimately resolved the issue with a temporary workaround and said the success is pivotal for the Chicago-based company scrambling to climb out of successive crises in its jetliner business and its space defense unit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Referring to Starliner's sole passenger mannequin named Rosie the Rocketeer, NASA astronaut Mike Fincke said at a press conference this week, "We are a little jealous of Rosie."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Starliner could fly its first team of astronauts to the space station as early as the fall if all goes well with the current mission which is delivering more than 800 pounds of cargo to the ISS.</p>

<p>A second try was scheduled in August of last year, but&nbsp;Starliner&nbsp;was rolled back from the launchpad to address sticky valves that weren't opening as they should, and the capsule was eventually sent back to the factory for fixes.</p>

<p>At a post-launch press conference, senior NASA official Steve Sitch said: "Overall, the spacecraft is doing really well," but he also flagged two anomalies that engineers were now working to understand.</p>

<p>The first was that two out of 12 orbital maneuvering and attitude control (OMAC) thrusters located&nbsp;on&nbsp;Starliner's aft side had initially fired but then shut down, forcing a third to take up their slack.</p>

<p>The second issue was that a device known as a sublimator responsible for cooling the spacecraft was initially slow to get started.</p>

<p>NASA is looking to certify&nbsp;Starliner&nbsp;as a second "taxi" service for its astronauts to the space station,&nbsp;a role that Elon Musk's SpaceX has provided since succeeding in a test mission for its Dragon capsule in 2020.</p>

<p>Both companies were awarded fixed-price contracts&nbsp;$4.2 billion to&nbsp;Boeing, and $2.6 billion to SpaceX in 2014, shortly after the end of the Space Shuttle program, during a time when the United States was left reliant&nbsp;on&nbsp;Russian Soyuz rockets for rides to the orbital outpost.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Boeing, with its hundred-year history, was considered by many as the sure shot, while then-upstart SpaceX was less proven.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In reality, it was SpaceX that rocketed ahead, and recently sent its fourth routine crew to the research platform while&nbsp;Boeing's development delays have cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars.</p>

<p>Starliner&nbsp;should dock with the&nbsp;ISS&nbsp;about 24 hours after launch, and deliver more than 500 pounds (226 kilograms) of cargo, including food and provisions such as clothes and sleeping bags for the current crew&nbsp;on&nbsp;the station.</p>

<p>Its sole passenger is a mannequin named Rosie the Rocketeer a play&nbsp;on&nbsp;the World War II campaign icon Rosie the Riveter whose job is to collect flight data with her sensors in order to learn what human astronauts would experience.</p>

<p>"We are a little jealous of Rosie," said NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, who is expected to be among the first crew selected for a manned demonstration mission should OFT-2 succeed.</p>

<p>The gumdrop-shaped capsule will spend about five to ten days in space, then undock and return to Earth, using giant parachutes to land in the desert of the western United States.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA sees a second provider to low Earth orbit as a vital backup, should SpaceX encounter&nbsp;problems.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"It's a really critical step for us and moving towards having two routinely flying crewed vehicles who can bring our crew to and from&nbsp;ISS," Dana Weigel, deputy program manager for the&nbsp;ISS, told reporters this week.&nbsp;</p>
