India’s ruling Bhartiya Janata Party Wednesday released its star-studded list of top campaigners for the upcoming assembly elections slated to be held on May 10. The list of 40 top BJP leaders included Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP chief ministers from three states, including firebrand leader Yogi Adityanath of Uttar Pradesh. However, the speculation market turned red hot as soon as people found out two notable names were missing from the list- BJP MPs Tejasvi Surya and Pratap Simha.

<h2>Why are Surya and Simha kept away from campaigning?</h2>

Tejasvi Surya is BJP’s youth morcha president and is a big name in the state’s politics. Pratap Simha is also among the state’s top firebrand leaders. However, The Print quoted BJP’s sources as saying the party wants to keep the focus of campaigning on PM Narendra Modi. The source said, “well-thought-out strategy to keep the focus of the campaign on Prime Minister Modi”.&nbsp;

However, other BJP leaders said that adding Surya’s name to the list didn’t make any sense because he was already campaigning for the party across districts. NDTV quoted a BJP leader as saying, “He is a member of parliament from Karnataka and a popular leader for us.

He is anyways campaigning for the party and has been doing so for weeks now. But we also need people from the organisation who can be sent at short notice for meetings, everyone cannot be burdened with the responsibility of campaigning all the time.”

Some other leaders from BJP confirmed to NDTV that Surya will campaign for the party in at least 50 constituencies across the state.

<h2>Congress’s jab on Karnataka BJP</h2>

Congress was quick to react to the major development related to Karnataka BJP. Supriya Shrinate, a leader in the Congress, referred to Surya as "Nafrati Chintu" and claimed that nobody cared about him even in his own state. She continued, "He needs to get off his high horse.”&nbsp;

Some in opposition believe that Surya was taken off the list after the so-called ‘emergency exit gate fiasco'. The emergency door of a grounded airliner was unlocked by a passenger on December 10, according to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which alarmed other passengers and caused delays. Later, it was alleged that the passenger was none other than Tejasvi Surya.

America welcomes PM with a red carpet and he’s attained the status of a global leader. The Congress compares him to a cobra and says he’s poisonous. She is an agent for China and Pakistan, who destroyed India,” said Yatnal while addressing a poll rally in Koppal. Arvind Kejriwal, the chief minister of Delhi has been&nbsp;called by the CBI on Sunday (April 16) for questioning&nbsp;over alleged corruption in the capital's now-scrapped alcohol sales policy.&nbsp;Manish Sisodia, an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and former deputy chief minister of Delhi, is currently in jail in connection with the same case, and law enforcement authorities have made other arrests.

An order from the Goa Police for Kejriwal to appear for questioning on April 27 in connection with an alleged defacement of public property has also been issued.

Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been asserting that Kejriwal was the brains behind the alleged scam, this is the first time the CBI has summoned the chief minister in the investigation, reported the Hindustan Times.&nbsp;

Calling the CBI summons as a conspiracy to arrest Kejriwal, AAP MP Sanjay Singh said, “I'd like to tell the PM - you and your Govt are covered in corruption from head to toe and Arvind Kejriwal's fight will not stop with this CBI summon. The conspiracy hatched by you to arrest, jail and take action against Arvind Kejriwal on 16th April will not stifle his voice.”

The Election Commission of India (ECI) requires all political parties, candidates and workers not to get involved in active political campaigning during 48 hours before the voting day. This period is known as the silence period, and now ECI has made it clear that this will also apply to social media. The ECI on Thursday issued three separate notices to three political parties—BJP, Congress and CPM, for breaching the silence period during Tripura Elections on social media. The political parties and their candidates were reportedly putting up tweets asking voters to vote in their favour or vote out incumbents.&nbsp;

ECI’s message to the Indian political parties is very clear: No such breach of the silence period will be tolerated as Nagaland and Meghalaya go into polls on February 27. ECI officials say the 48-hour silence period, which restricts political campaigning by political parties and their candidates, will also apply to social media, and violations will have consequences.

Some tweets by the political parties during the Tripura assembly elections were deemed by the ECI in violation of Section 126(1)(b) of the Representation of the People Act, 1951. On Thursday, the Commission requested that the respondents take corrective action "as soon as possible" and clarify their position on the violation latest by 5 PM on Friday.

In a multi-phased election, the 48-hour silent period could be in effect in some constituencies while the campaign is still going on in others. In other words, the commission has ruled that the silent period being followed in one district, which is set to vote in the next phase immediately, shall not be affected or disrupted by campaigning in another constituency going to the polls later.

Jammu and Kashmir's former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti today hit out at Home Minister of India, Amit Shah. Mehbooba said that Shah's statements are just ‘jumlas’ (empty promises) and there are no facts in his statement. ''He has himself admitted that he keeps making such statements, He accepted that he used such jumlas during the elections. It is for the first time in the history that a state was converted into a Union Territory. And now, to divert the issue of Adani, they are using such tactics. They always use Jammu and Kashmir to divert the attention of the country. I have to say that the land of Jammu and Kashmir belongs to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. I want the people to take control of the land. ''

Mufti also said that people were earlier called anti-nationals and now they are calling us encroachers. She said it's our land and people should take control of the land. It belongs to the people of Jammu and Kashmir. “People were earlier being called anti-national and now they are being called encroachers,'' said the Jammu and Kashmir former chief minister.

Mehbooba, while replying to a question regarding G-20 summit meetings, said that it will have serious consequences if the government continues to carry out the demolition drive. ''The summit at a time of raiding BBC offices and demolishing houses will have serious consequences for the country's reputation, '' said Jammu and Kashmir's former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti.

Mehbooba also said that while PDP was in coalition with BJP, they did not allow them to make any anti-people decisions. We didn’t allow them to carry out any anti-people activity. People can criticise me for my steps.&nbsp;I am not BJP, but till the government was there, we didn’t allow their agenda to prevail,” Mehbooba added.&nbsp;

The People’s Democratic Party held a protest on Wednesday (January 18) against the LG administration of Jammu and Kashmir. The protest was held in PDP’s Srinagar office at the Sher Kashmir Park. Party members were demanding the rollback of government order regarding the retrieval of state land held by people in the Union territory.&nbsp;

The Youth General Secretary of PDP Mohit Bhan was leading the protests and demanding the government to roll back the order. “The government’s directive is against the poor people who will be rendered homeless if this order is implemented on the ground. It’s totally inhuman,’’ said Bhan.&nbsp;

Most of the regional political parties like PDP, National Conference and People’s Conference&nbsp; in the Union Territory are against the government order&nbsp;and have expressed their disappointment over it. &nbsp;

“The National Conference is very clear that encroachments are not acceptable, but state land belongs to the people. If the government has passed an order, do they have any alternative for these people. SC judgement is two cases recently called for an alternative for the people until such steps are taken. It is totally wrong and harassment of locals. Sometimes I wonder if the BJP is really going to fight elections in Jammu Kashmir, they have such anti-people approach here. However, the BJP has welcomed the order of retrieving the government land. They have called it a step which is pro-poor people of the Union Territory.&nbsp;

The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Wednesday announced the assembly poll dates for the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

The state elections in Tripura will be held on February 16, while Nagaland and Meghalaya will vote on February 27. The counting of votes will begin on March 2, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said on Wednesday. All three states have 60 seats each.&nbsp;

While Tripura is currently ruled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) runs the Nagaland government. &nbsp;

The National People's Party (NPP), the only political party from the northeast to have a national party recognition, runs the government in Meghalaya.&nbsp;

“There is no place for violence in a democracy, we are working towards a violence-free election,” Kumar said during the press briefing, adding that 228,000 voters were added to electoral rolls of these three states.&nbsp;

“We have asked the youth who are due to turn 18 years before the polling date so that we can add them with a welcome kit. As many as 10,000 youth have applied from these three States,” he added.&nbsp;

The announcement of the chief election commissioner paves the way for a tight election schedule for this year, in which nine states are headed for polls. This year is also significant for the ruling BJP, as it would give a sense of how people will vote for the all-important general elections in 2024, where the incumbent PM Modi is largely expected to retain power.&nbsp;

Addressing the concerns raised by some political parties regarding the efficiency and integrity of the electronic voting machines (EVMs), the CEC chief noted that the parties who have expressed doubts over the machines earlier had won elections through the same process.&nbsp;

Among the three states, Tripura will be closely watched as the BJP had in 2018 created history by defeating the Left, which had ruled the state for 25 years.&nbsp;

This time, the Congress and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) are expected to join hands to take on the saffron party in Tripura.&nbsp;

Gujarat Election Results 2022: Full list of BJP winning candidates with constituencies

BJP Chief Ministerial candidate&nbsp;Bhupendra Patel, the incumbent Gujarat CM, won from Ghatlodia after edging out Congress candidate Dr. Amee Yajnik by more than 50,000 votes. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel said that the&nbsp;results of the Gujarat Elections are quite clear and people have made up their minds to further continue with the journey of development in Gujarat. The Chief Minister said that he humbly accepted the mandate of the people and every worker of the BJP is committed to public service.&nbsp;

State BJP Chief CR Patil said Gujarat CM will take oath at 2pm on 12 December. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will take part in the oath ceremony. The Election Commission's most recent reports show that Patel received 80.86% of the vote, compared to Amiben Yagnik of the Congress, who received 9.81%. Vijay Patel, an AAP candidate, was placed third with 6.73 per cent of the vote.

Moreover, after registering a major win, BJP's Jamnagar North candidate, Rivaba Jadeja thanked those who accepted her as a candidate, reached out and connected to people. "It's not just my victory but of all of us," she said. Cricketer Ravindra Jadeja's wife, BJP's Rivaba Jadeja,&nbsp;was fielded from here replacing sitting MLA Dharmendrasinh Jadeja (Hakubha).&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) entered the election arena this time, making Gujarat's election a three-cornered race rather than the state's usual struggle between the BJP and Congress. 624 independents and a total of 70 political parties participated in the election. 101 candidates from the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and 26 from the Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP) ran against the main competitors BJP, Congress, and AAP.&nbsp;

Here are the other star candidates to watch out for
&nbsp;

1. AAP's Isudan Gadhvi, Chief Ministerial face: Gadhvi was picked after a popular choice of AAP.&nbsp;AAP's Alpesh Kathirya won&nbsp;party's first seat while CM face Isudan Gadhvi lost.&nbsp; Gadhvi had said earlier this week that it is difficult to predict results through exit polls but&nbsp;BJP won't form the government. He said the AAP win will over 51 seats in phase 1 and over 52 in phase 2 and exit polls will be proved wrong. Gadhvi opined that lotus is no longer as powerful as it was once and is declining in the state. While casting his vote, he had said: "I expect AAP to win 51+ of 89 seats in first phase and 52+ in second."

2. AAP Gujarat president Gopal Italia: Italia is contesting from the Katargam in the Surat district. The poll performance of both leaders is being keenly watched with the AAP having held an extensive campaign in the state. Even as Gadhvi had predicted a win for his party in more than 100 of 182 seats in the state, AAP managed to win just five seats.

3. Hardik Patel: BJP leader and Patidar quota stir leader Hardik Patel won against Congress' Lakha Bharwad - who is the sitting MLA from the constituency. He earlier said that no riots/terrorist attacks took place in the past 20 yrs. He said that people know BJP met their expectations. "They press 'Lotus' as their future will be safe under BJP. It did good governance and strengthened this trust," he added.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Exit polls:&nbsp;Exit polls had predicted a huge mandate for the BJP in the state. This will be seventh term for the party in Gujarat. Early trends on Thursday were in line with predictions for the AAP too.

Gujarat Elections Results 2022: Bhupendra Patel to take oath as CM, Rivaba Jadeja wins with big margin

Sanjay Singh, an AAP Rajya Sabha MP, is not holding back from acknowledging that his party has attained "national party status." The BJP is undoubtedly going to win the Gujarat Assembly Elections in 2022. However, he claimed that they became a national party in just ten short years. He also expressed his gratitude to the Gujarati people. According to the most recent results, BJP has won 131 seats and is in the lead in 25, while AAP won 4 seats and is in the lead in just one of the 182 constituencies.

What is the Election Commission of India's criteria to declare a party as a national party?

The requirements for a party to be recognised as a national party have been established by the ECI. Depending on how often these requirements are met, a party may occasionally earn or lose national party status.

What constitutes a National Party?&nbsp;

A national party is the one that is present "nationally," as opposed to a regional party, which is only present in a single state or area. The larger parties in India are often national parties, such the Congress and BJP. Some lesser-known parties, such as the communist parties, are still acknowledged as national parties. Being a national party is sometimes linked with a particular stature, although this does not always imply having significant political influence at the national level.

According to the Election Commission of India, a political party would be considered a national party if it is "recognised" in four or more states; if its candidates received at least 6% of all valid votes cast in any four or more states during the most recent Lok Sabha or Assembly elections; if it had at least four MPs in the most recent Lok Sabha elections; or if it has won at least 2% of the total seats in the Lok Sabha from not less than three states.

AAP in Gujarat Election Results 2022 and its rise as a National Party

In Delhi and Punjab, the AAP has strong majorities and significant vote shares. Additionally, it earned 6.77 percent of the vote in the March elections for the Goa Assembly. This meant that the party had already met the requirements for recognition as a state party in three states going into the Gujarat-Himachal elections. To be recognised in a fourth state and become eligible for recognition as a national party, it now needed 6% of the vote in the Assembly elections in either Gujarat or Himachal.

Speaking to the media about the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir, while touring Anantnag,&nbsp;PDP president Mehbooba Mufti called the Election Commission a puppet in the hands of the BJP.

''I can't decide on the elections. It's the work of BJP as the election commission has become a branch of BJP, a hand of BJP. If you have noticed in Himachal Pradesh, BJP has been doing religious propaganda and no action was taken by the Election Commission. Muslims are being threatened in the country and the election commission is silent,'' said Mufti.&nbsp;

Ahead of the assembly polls in the Western Indian state of Gujarat, the ruling BJP government is mulling a strategy to implement Uniform Civil Code (UCC). Reportedly, the state government will be forming a high-level committee under a retired high court or supreme court judge to look into the matter. The announcement was made by the minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi after a cabinet meeting in the capital city of Gandhinagar. “Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah, CM Bhupendra Patel has taken a historic decision in the cabinet meeting today — of forming a committee for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state," said Sanghavi. In the BJP’s 2019 general election manifesto, the party committed itself to implementing UCC on a country level. However, despite being in power for more than eight years now, the Narendra Modi government is yet to take a rather decisive step on the issue. Not the first time BJP has made such an announcement However, those privy to the matter understand that BJP has a knack of using UCC as a poll plank and sweep the votes ahead of crucial assembly elections. Earlier this year, prior to the Uttarakhand state election, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami made a similar announcement, informing about constituting a committee to look into the implementation of UCC. “This committee will prepare a draft of the uniform civil code for the people of Uttarakhand. This UCC will be for equal laws on subjects like marriage, divorce, land, property and inheritance for people of all religions." WATCH | Gravitas Plus: Uniform Civil Code: Is India ready? × UCC and its implementation finds a mention in India's Constitution under the Directive Principles of State Policy. "The State shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India,” states Article 44 of the Constitution. Notably, UCC is an exhaustive set of common laws for all religions governing personal matters like marriage, divorce, adoption, succession, and others. It aims at ensuring equality among all religions. However, a significant portion of the population, mostly Muslims are against UCC as it might interfere with the Muslim Personal Law, more colloquially known as Shariat. Mehbooba Mufti takes a dig at the centre while congratulating Rishi Sunak, BJP hits back

The Jammu and Kashmir's regional political parties have strongly opposed a new order issued by the Deputy Commissioner, Jammu region ordering revenue officials to issue certificates of residence to the people residing in the territorial jurisdiction of Jammu “for more than one year.” &nbsp;

This order will enable these people to get entry into the ongoing special summary revision of electoral rolls. &nbsp;

Regional Political parties like National Conference, PDP and Democratic Azad Party have opposed this decision. People's democratic party president Mehbooba Mufti accused the central government of orchestrating demographic change in Jammu and Kashmir.&nbsp;

"Article 370 has been removed from J&amp;K to pave way for these kinds of things and their 'BJP' main goal is to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir. The 'BJP' is afraid of elections because they know people of Kashmir and Jammu have understood their intentions. They will lose badly here and that's why they are now adding nonlocals to voter lists."

Mehbooba also added that "with the opening of land, jobs and now votes for non-locals, the traditional culture of Kashmiris and Dogras will be ruined. People of Jammu will bear the first blow to Dogra culture, identity, employment &amp; business, BJP's attempts to create religious &amp; regional divisions between Jammu &amp; Kashmir must be thwarted because whether it's a Kashmiri or a Dogra, safeguarding our identity &amp; rights will be possible only if we put up a collective fight.”

The government of Jammu and Kashmir is revising the voter list of the Union territory. New potential voters are being added, while those who have died in the previous years are being taken out. The National Conference has also opposed the move and said that BJP is scared to fight elections in Jammu and Kashmir and that's why they are bringing nonlocal voters.&nbsp;

''The Government is going ahead with its plan to add 25 lakh, non-local voters, in J&amp;K and we continue to oppose this move. BJP is scared of the elections &amp; knows it will lose badly. People of J&amp;K must defeat these conspiracies at the ballot box, '' said National Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar.&nbsp;

Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad also opposed this decision and said that it will increase the social tension in the Union territory.&nbsp;

''We have always opposed the non-residents' inclusion in the voter list and it will remain as such. Article 370 gave us this provision that no nonlocal can get the voting rights in Jammu and Kashmir. Giving a certificate is all right but giving them voting rights is not right. The social tension will increase a lot by this decision,'' said Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad.&nbsp;

The Home Minister of India, Amit Shah had said recently in a rally in North Kashmir's Baramulla district that ''the polls will take place once the summary revision of the voter list is over''.&nbsp;

People of Jammu will bear the first blow to Dogra culture, identity, employment & business, BJP's attempts to create religious & regional divisions between Jammu & Kashmir must be thwarted because whether it's a Kashmiri or a Dogra, safeguarding our identity & rights will be possible only if we put up a collective fight.” Also read | Army dog kept fighting terrorists in Kashmir despite receiving two bullet injuries The government of Jammu and Kashmir is revising the voter list of the Union territory. New potential voters are being added, while those who have died in the previous years are being taken out. The National Conference has also opposed the move and said that BJP is scared to fight elections in Jammu and Kashmir and that's why they are bringing nonlocal voters. ''The Government is going ahead with its plan to add 25 lakh, non-local voters, in J&K and we continue to oppose this move. BJP is scared of the elections & knows it will lose badly. People of J&K must defeat these conspiracies at the ballot box, '' said National Conference spokesperson Imran Nabi Dar. Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad also opposed this decision and said that it will increase the social tension in the Union territory. ''We have always opposed the non-residents' inclusion in the voter list and it will remain as such. Article 370 gave us this provision that no nonlocal can get the voting rights in Jammu and Kashmir. Giving a certificate is all right but giving them voting rights is not right. The social tension will increase a lot by this decision,'' said Former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir Ghulam Nabi Azad. The Home Minister of India, Amit Shah had said recently in a rally in North Kashmir's Baramulla district that ''the polls will take place once the summary revision of the voter list is over''. Watch | In a bizarre protest, shelters in India's Gujarat let loose thousands of cows on government offices

Former Chief Minister of Jammu Kashmir and PDP President Mehbooba Mufti warned the central government of dire consequences if the fruit-laden trucks on Srinagar-Jammu National Highway are halted. The fruit growers of the valley have been protesting against the halting of the trucks on the National Highway. Today Mehbooba Mufti joined the protesting fruit growers in the Aglar area of Shopian in South Kashmir.

The farmers were on a sit-in protest for the third consecutive day against the halting of their fruit-laden trucks on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, which has led to huge losses for the farmers.

&nbsp;"You (BJP govt) have turned Kashmir into an open prison, destroying our economy. I am warning the administration that if they don’t immediately open the roads for trucks, I along with our workers will sit on a protest and block the National Highway,'' said Mehbooba Mufti.&nbsp;

Mehbooba also said that lakhs of people in Kashmir are dependent on the apple industry and the administration needs to know that. ''The farmers have taken loans and have to repay the same with interest, who is going to compensate the losses of these fruit growers,'' she added.&nbsp;

The fruit growers association has claimed that they have incurred losses of millions due to the halting of these trucks on the National Highway. Mehbooba said that the patience of the Kashmiri people is being tested and if this is not stopped, she will come out on the road with the farmers.&nbsp;

The fruit growers had alleged that the halt of trucks was being created unnecessarily by the authorities.&nbsp;While the administration in a statement had clarified and said that due to the bumper crop this year the flow of trucks has increased, owing to the bad condition of roads on NHW the halt of traffic is being triggered. They added that in spite of this the authorities are trying their best to clear the fruit-laden trucks on a priority basis.
