There certainly exists an India that's miles away from so-called 'wokeness' sometimes taken for granted in this time and age. Here, the families are close-knit but there are prying eyes and wagging tongues. Family members spy on each other, funnily pass on unsubstantiated rumours but at the end of the day are still one unit bound by love. In such pros and cons-filled set-up unfolds the story of 'Badhaai Do'. Do not expect anything Rajshri-esque from 'Badhaai Do' based on this description above because the movie deals with gender issues.

Shardul (Rajkummar Rao) is a hunky policeman in Dehradun who is hiding from the world the fact that he is gay. He is stationed in a police station that has mostly woman police officers. He desperately trying for a transfer. Suman (Bhumi Pednekar) is a Physical Education teacher in what looks like one of the elite Dehradun schools. She is hiding her identity as a Lesbian.

Paths of Shardul and Suman cross and after a very brief 'courtship', Shardul proposes a marriage of convenience that will keep respective families from hounding them to get 'settled' in life by way of traditional marriage.

The win-win deal is sealed quickly. Marriage is done and dusted and the couple starts living under one roof, husband and wife for the world but 'roommates' to one another, as they put it. There is no physical intimacy between them and both indulge in love with those of their respective preference. What follows is a game of careful balancing as both families do not know any of this.

Rajkummar Rao has by now mastered the art of playing awkward everyman and his presence is a delight in 'Badhaai Do'. Bhumi Pednekar's understated charm brings out the small-town but headstrong girl quite well on screen.

The prying eyes of both families are soon squarely on the couple. When there is no 'good news' even after one year, the aunties and uncles resort to subtle to outright explicit hints. They obtain info about the size of the bed both sleep together in to aid their own conjectures about 'why no baby yet'. Shardul's mom is swiftly dispatched to the couple's house in Dehradun to spy on them.

Both Rao and Pednekar have been able to portray their suffocation in this 'straight society' quite well. To its credit, the movie offers space for the portrayal of closeness between the men in addition to that between women and ducks the usual criticism about gender-based movies being partial to depicting lesbian love just to grab eyeballs. The same-sex closeness is depicted without being quote-unquote "icky". You can definitely watch this film with your family.

The songs, though hummable, appear unlikely to linger in mind once out of the theatre. This is quite a surprise as we have names like Amit Trivedi, Ankit Tiwari, Tanishq Bagchi associated with the music of the movie.

Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar carry the movie ably on their shoulders. You remember them the most. Not to forget Bhumi's love interest Rimjhim played by Chum Darang who adds to the freshness of the story.

As a product, 'Badhaai Do' does not quite appear to have been made for multiplex crowds in tier-1 cities as these viewers may have already grappled with gender-based dilemmas portrayed in 'Badhaai Do'. They may already have found solutions to these dilemmas (positive or negative!). But if you have time and want to quickly watch a no-stress movie, this Harshavardhan Kulkarni-directed flick can be worth your while.

'Badhaai Do' review: Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar ably steer this no-stress, gender-based movie

After watching the trailer of Junglee Films’ 'Badhaai Do', I was left with many questions. The most obvious: why Badhaai? Junglee had a freak hit in 'Badhaai Ho' in 2018. I love that film. Who doesn’t! Wisely its brilliant director Amit Sharma has stayed away from the supposed follow-up.

“Mujhe jo kehna ttha maine keh diya (I said what I had to). Aage baat khichne se koi matlab nahin nikalta(stretching the story makes no sense),” he told me, and I couldn’t agree more.

The congratulatory part of 'Badhaai Do' is that it has no connection with the wonderful 'Badhaai Ho'. So when 'Badhaai Teen' comes along, don’t go expecting to know anything about what happens to Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao after their belated parenthood.

To my guarded amusement, I find 'Badhaai Do' to be one of those pseudo-liberal films that Ayushmann Khurrana has made a career out of. I wonder how he missed out on this one. Apparently he didn’t have the time as his beefy avatar was busy wooing a transgender in 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui'. Khurrana’s loss is Rajkummar Rao’s gain; Rao plays a brawny cop named Shardul Thakur who makes an offer to Sumu Singh(Bhumi Pednekar) that she can’t refuse.

He is gay. She is gay. Agay dekhte jao.

The laughs in 'Badhaai Do' are so strenuous it feels like the team decided to get fashionably liberal. There are jokes about Pednekar North-Eastern partner(Chum Darang) trying to pass off as cousins(curious disbelieving stares from the supporting cast); there is even a joke about Rao not being able to bear children because “it” is too tiny. Haha.

Rao and Pednekar, both safely straight in real life, get a chance to feel superior by playing homosexual characters. This is the film that the two actors can show to their children when they reach the age of consent and brag about how liberal they are.

If the truth be told there is nothing funny, let alone liberal, about such tragic marriages of convenience. Gay men and straight women trapped in convenient “arranged” marriages are bad enough. Here you want to show two homosexual individuals acting as each other’s beards and you want to generate laughter out of this tragic circumstance.

Last year there was a dreadful film about a relationship between a gay man and a lesbian woman: 'Akele Hum Akele Tum'. At least it didn’t try to raise laughter out of the couple’s mutual deviancy. Here in 'Badhaai Do' seasoned actors like Sheeba Chaddha, Loveleen Mishra and Seema Pahwa join in the "fun". Decency be damned.
'Badhaai Do' trailer is hugely problematic. Here's why

The trailer of Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar's new film 'Badhaai Do' was unveiled on Tuesday morning on social media.

The three-minute and six-second trailer revolve around a marital setting between Rajkummar and Bhumi who come together to keep a few secrets between the two intact.

The two disclose the secrets to each other that they both are from the LGBTQ+ community.

Getting into a marriage of convenience and living as roommates is what leads to humorous situations between the pair, making this one a perfect family entertainer.

It is not only high on comedy and emotions, but this family drama also deals with a socially relevant subject, that we got a glimpse of in the trailer.

Karan, Varun and I have mutually decided to postpone the shooting of the film. It's a script we all love and am sure will revisit soon. But scheduling the film was turning out to be very tough, as the film has a solid ensemble cast and the dates were just not falling into place." While this is not a one-man job, every small step towards a sustainable future counts," says the actor. The contest will be open for class five to nine students who have to submit entries for the most innovative ideas that will make cities and communities more sustainable. Pednekar, along with an expert, will select the Young Earth Champions who will feature on the channel. Top 10 winners will virtually interact with the Durgamati (2020) actor for a discussion on doing their bit to save the environment. "We are giving children a platform to lead by example and bring about a change. I urge the youth, who have an eco-conscious mind and the heart of a Climate Warrior, to come forward with their innovative ideas," she adds. The actress has done her every bit to save the environment. Bhumi has also turned vegetarian, and she credits her climate-conscious journey for enabling her to make this life choice. The actress shared, "For many years I had the want to go vegetarian but breaking habits are the toughest thing to do. My journey with Climate Warrior taught me a lot of things and I just didn’t feel like eating meat anymore."

Rajkummar Rao & Bhumi Pednekar starrer 'Badhaai Do' to go on floors in 2021

Hindi cinema has truly come a long way. Gone are the days when women were projected as a beacon of positivity, an inspiration, the holier than thou. In the past few years, filmmakers have not just given women a voice, but also projected them as flawed, imperfect individuals who fumble and learn from their mistakes. In Alankrita Shrivastava's 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' -the two leading ladies Dolly and Kitty are not brazen or rebellious but flawed personalities who deal with misogyny, sexism and discover sexual liberation.

Set in Greater Noida, the story explores the lives of two cousins Dolly and Kitty who may object to each other's life choices, feel competitive and argue- but ultimately are each other's biggest support system.

Dolly (Konkona Sen Sharma), the elder one has lived in denial about things in life. Separated from her mother at a young age, she tries to overachieve in order to prove to no one in particular how perfect her life is. Trapped in a sex-less marriage and a mundane job, she tries to fill the void by materialistic things- clothes, new AC, a flat. She also has to deal with her younger son's eagerness to be a girl. While she disapproves almost everything her sister Kitty or Kajal (Bhumi Pednekar) does, secretly she pines to be like her.

Kajal, on the other hand, has just come to the big city from Darbhanga, Bihar. Slightly naive, a bit vulnerable, she lands herself a job as a caller of a paid romance app that has men calling to fulfill their sexual desires. Initially apprehensive about the work she does, she eventually finds comfort with the money she earns and even befriends a caller called Pradeep (Vikrant Massey).

Srivastava's last outing on the big screen 'Lipstick Under My Burkha' will always be remembered for the amazing Bua Ji's character who gave a voice to thousands like her, burdened all their lives with responsibilities of the family, desperate to get affection, love from someone all their lives. Much like 'Lipstick...', 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' explores the sexual ambition of the women- who discover love, lust and even orgasm. In one poignant scene, as Kitty explains how men only like phone-sex, she rues that there should be a similar app for women's desires. The film in fact is spruced with such little moments. The one where Dolly meets her estranged mother (scene stealer Neelima Azim) is precious, then the scene where Dolly's younger son Pappu admires himself dressed as a doll at the museum is so beautifully written.

It is so refreshing to see Konkona Sen Sharma in a film after a long time. The gifted actress is so natural as the slightly shrewd, competitive, and aspirational Dolly. Giving her able support, shining with her own performance is Pednekar, who in a short span of time has proved her mettle with each of her films. It really is a joy to watch the two powerful, confident actors complementing each other and delivering stellar performances.

The men in the film too are good. Amir Bashir as Dolly's husband, Vikrant Massey as Pradeep and Amol Parasher as Dolly's crush Omar are in supportive characters but do absolute justice to their roles.

The film though flaws at the scripting level. While it begins on a high, it slowly meanders and delves in too many topics thereby not digging deeper in any of them. Casual sexism at work, misogyny, gender stereotypes- all have been stuffed in a script which could focus on just the two women rediscovering their voice. The climax is one of the messiest ones in recent times where the director gives a hat tip to female rappers and their repressed voice and even puts up a giant installation of a vagina that has no context to the plot. The film fumbles majorly with its overcrowded issues.

Despite the flaws, 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' makes for a good watch only because of its two main leads. The women are confident actors, deliver assured performances and manage to shine in a film with that cramps up too much in too little time. Maybe if they had made it into a web series, they would have been able to more justice to the story. Just a thought!

Written and directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, the film was scheduled for a theatrical release in May, but was put on hold due to the shutdown of cinema halls amid the coronavirus pandemic since March.

The movie follows Sharma and Pednekar as two cousins who will do whatever it takes to break the invisible shackles that are keeping them from the ideal lives they envision for themselves.
Bhumi Pednekar pens heartfelt note on her 31st birthday, 'grateful to have a job I love'

Bhumi Pednekar carved a niche for herself in the Bollywood industry from her debut movie 'Dum Laga Ke Haisha' in 2015 and has since then never looked back.

The versatile actress who proved herself by delivering some of the powerful performances in the recent years, Bhumi has in a short span created a niche for herself in the film industry. As Bhumi turns a year older, we look into some of the strong characters portrayed by her on-screen.

Latika Trivedi in 'Bala'

Bhumi Pednekar's Latika in 'Bala' is one of the strongest characters she has played on screen. In 'Bala' Latika was a smart, dark-skinned girl who bravely stood up against stereotypes in the society that overlooks one's tralent over skin colour.

Chandro Tomar in 'Saand Ki Aankh'

Bhumi perfectly portrayed the role of Shooter Dadi aka Chandro Tomar in this biopic. Tushar Hiranandani's movie dealt with gender discrimination and highlighted how age was just a number when one was pursuing her dream.

Vedika Tripathi in 'Pati, Patni Aur Woh'

Vedika Tripathi in 'Pati Patni Aur Woh' is smart, fashionable and knows what she wants. Bhumi Pednekar played a modern girl who is bold in her choices and lives life on her terms in the film. She loves her husband but puts her dignity above all.

Jaya Joshi in 'Toilet: Ek Prem Katha'
Jaya played by Bhumi Pednekar, an educated college going girl, falls in love with Akshay Kumar and marries him. The girl who has a progressive attitude towards life, takes a strong step and leaves her in-laws house and demands a toilet to be built in the house if her husband truly wants her back. The movie raised the problems that women in the rural areas face due to lack of sanitation facilities.

From 'Latika' to 'Vedika Tripathi': Strong characters portrayed by Bhumi Pednekar

From her debut in the movie `Dum Laga Ke Haisha,` actor Bhumi Pednekar has become a promising face in the Bollywood industry giving hit movies back to back. However, the actor feels that she is still the same, vulnerable, ambitious girl and success has not changed her even a bit.

"I am the same girl. Honestly, I have not changed much. Success has not managed to change me! I am still very vulnerable, ambitious, still have stars in my eyes, and have huge dreams. This has been, I think, my biggest push in life because I was young when I decided I wanted to be an actor," said the `Bala` actor.

The 30-year-old actor already has an impressive array of roles under her list, with movies including `Son Chiriya`, `Shubh Mangal Saavdhan`, `Toilet: Ek Prem Katha`, `Pati, Patni Aur Woh`, `Saand Ki Aankh`, and more.

"I want to do the work that I want to do and want to carve a separate space for myself. I don`t want to be a part of the rat race and I had such a clear vision about it," the actor added.

Recalling her days at the Yash Raj Films, Pednekar said: "I am so fortunate that I had the opportunities and it all started with that one job at Yash Raj Films. When I started with them, I was all of 17, I didn`t know what I was doing."

"I was honestly thinking of going abroad back then for studies. I randomly went to that interview because I knew I had to start working otherwise my parents will send me off abroad for further education and my life changed. There was no stopping after that!" she explained.

Lately, Pednekar launched an anti-spitting campaign that aims at educating people, in an attempt to bring the nation together in the fight against COVID-19.She also has been advocating for nature conservation through her breakthrough initiative `Climate Warrior`.

She took steps to bring Bollywood together to spread awareness about mother nature through her campaign. The campaign was taken up by many actors, including Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Anushka Sharma, and others where they explained the `one wish they have for the earth.`

Success has not managed to change me: Bhumi Pednekar

This week on #DownToEarthWithDee, the actors shared stories of activism and inspiration in their journeys towards a common goal.

As Mumbai battled Cyclone Nisarga, the dialogue for climate change and environmental conservation became even more relevant. Joining Dia was another actor Bhumi Pedneker. The two spoke about what drives them, how they use their platform for change, and why environmental activism is not just for the activists. For Dia, these virtual rendezvous sessions, conducted every Wednesday in the run-up to World Environment Day on June 5, 2020, were an attempt to reconnect with nature through conversations with individuals who have made their own unique contributions towards sustainability.

In a heartfelt introduction to her fellow artist and activist, Dia said, “What I love about Bhumi is not only her craft but her humanity and the choices she makes to build environmental awareness. Along with being a wonderful artist, she is a relentless Climate Warrior.”

At the onset, their conversation highlighted the beautiful coincidence of Bhumi’s name (which means earth) and what it has so naturally led her to do. The ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ actress admitted to drawing inspiration from Dia’s consistent efforts for environmental action over the years, referring to when the UN Environment Goodwill Ambassador had begun boycotting plastic bottles years ago.

“I’ve been brought up with a lot of compassion and just general awareness since I was very little,” Bhumi shared, adding that what she missed out on in Mumbai she enjoyed heartily in her grandparents' Jaipur farmhouse.

“My grandmother had hundreds of trees and everything was homegrown. I’ve spent a lot of time up close with nature. I realised how important it is to coexist with nature.”

She pointed out how a lot of environmental practices like composting and garbage segregation aren’t new concepts and in fact find their roots in Indian villages. Despite being a complete city girl, she credits her parents for talking about the changes the world needs to see.

Dia saw hope in the current situation of the global pandemic as it allows people to build back a life that can coexist with nature. “There are more people who understand how important it is to be conscious and aware of the balance of our ecosystems in the natural world. In the aftermath of the coronavirus, we really need to go back to basics and understand how fragile our relationship is with nature,” Dia said.

Dia and Bhumi engaged in an animated conversation about how altering their personal spaces has helped them influence change. “The problem is people think it’s very inconvenient,” but that didn’t stop the actor from training her home staff and professional team to take precautions. She even refuses to do rain scenes in her films in an attempt to save water.

Another step in this direction is Bhumi’s most recent initiative ‘One Wish for the Earth’ that aims at engaging youth across India to be more conscious of the climate and environment. She believes that while she has been doing her small bit for the environment very early on, now she has the power as an actor.

“People care about what I have to say, they listen to me, I have better connections with people that can influence young minds because by the end of it the youth is our future,” Bhumi said, echoing a belief Dia has had for years as she too engages in activities with children and youngsters who she believes are the future of the planet.

Lastly, the two artists addressed the very real threat of ‘eco-anxiety’ — “I don’t want to scare anyone, but the more I realise that the planet might not be inhabitable in the near future, I don’t see myself having a family!” Bhumi said, confessing that she often felt alone as people only saw her as an “activist”, something she believes everyone needs to become. But despite all this, she found that meeting others who care just as much helps her feel at ease.

Dia resonated with this thought, saying, “The moment we become part of the solution and connect with like-minded people, it gives us strength and eases the anxiety. We still feel it, but it helps when we can share it with each other.”

Along with being a wonderful artist, she is a relentless Climate Warrior.” At the onset, their conversation highlighted the beautiful coincidence of Bhumi’s name (which means earth) and what it has so naturally led her to do. Vicky Kaushal shares the first poster of his new film 'Bhoot Part One: The Haunted Ship'

In one scene of ‘Saand Ki Aankh’, soon after winning their first medals at state level shooting competition, 60 something years old Chandro and Prakashi Tomar are asked their age by a reporter. Unable to tell the exact age, the journalist jokes that women are never okay revealing their age to which Chandro corrects him and says, “There is no shame in hiding one’s age. But women are unable to tell exactly how many years have they lived for themselves.” Poignant and impactful-this line sums up the film well.

Director Tushar Hiranandani narrates a heartwarming real-life story of two feisty women from an interior village in Uttar Pradesh who take up sharpshooting post 60 - an age when most give up on life. Not only are Chandro and Prakashi good at their game, but even win hundreds of medal even as the menfolk in their household remain oblivious about their new activity for a long time.

Sisters-in-law Chandro and Prakashi have spent their lifetime in an oppressed, feudal household- where women are identified through the colours of their dupattas, instead of face or personality. They may be working the most in the household, but are still submissive to the men in their lives. It's only when Doctor Yashpal (Vineet Singh) opens a shooting range in the village to churn out state-level champions, do the grandmothers, now in their 60s, take up shooting. They initially start shooting to inspire and encourage their granddaughters but subsequently find their calling and their voice. After years of hiding from the family and winning medals- there comes a point when they have to reveal their secret for the sake of their daughters. Would the family and society at large accept them?

The story, from the heartland of the country, has a lot to relate to. Women in rural as well as urban areas are often subjugated to patriarchal norms and unnecessary rules which not suppress their voice but also curb freedom. So in that sense, the story of ‘Saand Ki Aankh’ is a known one. You know how the story will pan out eventually yet its the treatment and the performance that keeps you glued to the seat. Without being too preachy, writers Jagdeep Siddhu (dialogues) and Balwinder Singh Janjua paint a very real picture where you feel the pain of these women. You understand why the two women feel suffocated in their own house. You heart goes out to the younger girls, who know they are more capable of winning medals than their brothers and yet are not allowed to pursue their dreams.

The film completely focuses on Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu- and they do not disappoint. In a short period, both actresses have carved their niche in the film industry by playing spirited characters. In ‘Saand Ki Ankh’ too they play similar roles, but they adapt the dialect, the mannerisms of rural, uneducated, feisty women well. They fit in the milieu well. I found myself ever so often looking more at Pednekar than Pannu as the former brings in the right amount of restraint to her character Chandro. But the women complement each other well and deliver superlative performances. They share incredible camaraderie on screen and their bond is well reflected on screen.

Among the men, Vineet Kumar as their coach, mentor, and guide deliver a formidable performance. Prakash Jha also impresses as the conservative patriarch who doesn't believe in giving the women in his family a voice.

While the film is pertinent and enjoyable, it isn't completely devoid of flaws. The characters do not age well. The makeup is shoddy and quite an eyesore. The prosthetic used on two actresses are not well done and it is difficult to believe them as aged characters.

While the two actresses deliver in their respective parts, one can't help but wonder why the makers could not have cast senior actresses in these roles. They do have different sets of actors playing the husbands-younger and older- so what stopped them from doing the same in Chandro and Prakashi's case? Surely there is no dearth of senior actresses in this country who would perform equally well.

The film is also a bit long and could have been edited better. The whole ordeal of the four women leaving their homes at the break of dawn every day while the household sleeps appears to be repetitive after a point. And the narrative becomes a bit jumbled near the climax.

While there are these glaring flaws, it is the cast and the story that make 'Saand Ki Aankh' a compelling watch. It celebrates women and their immense potential to juggle multiple roles with ease. It projects strong women who are willing to fight the odds for a better future and inspire countless others to speak up and find their calling in life.

'Saand Ki Aankh' review: Taapsee Pannu, Bhumi Pednekar take a shot at patriarchy, age and stereotypes

One of the greatest challenges for any filmmaker is to make his story engaging and entertaining. And when the storyline is predictable, the challenges double-up because the audience already knows how the story will be and it is a bigger struggle to keep them glued nevertheless. In Ayushmann Khurrana's latest 'Bala', director Amar Kaushik beautifully narrates a story that may be known yet there's a certain fresh appeal to it.

Based in Kanpur, its the story of Bala(Khurrana), a marketing agent of a beauty company, who is balding at a young age. A popular boy since childhood, he has received an ample amount of attention from the opposite sex all through his childhood. He can mimic popular stars and does stand up on the side. But Bala is also a man who is astutely insecure of his looks thanks to his premature balding.

When several disgusting attempts fail to bring back Bala's lost glory, he resorts to a wig. On a trip to Lucknow, he meets Pari(Yami Gautam), tik-tok superstar and the face of his company. Love happens almost instantly as they are a match made in filmy heaven. A day after the wedding, as Bala's childhood friend Latika(Bhumi Pednekar) a dusky strong-headed lawyer comes charging at Bala s place, truth is unravelled and Pari decides to walk out of the marriage. Will they get back together- forms rest of the story.

Laced with the humorous situation and hilarious dialogues written by Niren Bhatt, 'Bala' scores majorly despite a predictable storyline. You know how the story would end up but that's where the film scores. It not only cleverly tackles societal prejudices without being too preachy but also ensures that the laughs are in plenty. Premature balding, discrimination based on one's skin colour, and appearance and even the shallow arrogance of those who are blessed with 'perfect' looks- 'Bala' tackles all of them effectively.

Performances in the film are top-notch. From leading man Ayushmann Khurrana- who yet again manages to hit the ball out of the park with a stupendous performance to the leading ladies Bhumi Pednekar as the firebrand lawyer Latika and Yami Gautam as the shallow Pari who only has her looks to be proud of- every actor seamlessly fits in their part.

Khurrana, who is clearly on a winning streak with all his films hitting the bull's eye, is the perfect small-town boy who has more arrogance than talent. A lover of 90's film, he is a charmer as Bala but also someone who is hollow and cannot think deeper than appearances.
Pednekar gets a feisty character to play on screen and does complete justice to it. The only hitch is her makeup- she is made at least four shades darker in the film to suit her character and the makeup artist has done a shoddy job of it. It is also refreshing to watch Yami Gautam play an over-dramatic self-obsessed small-town model. Gautam brings in the right amount of emotions that are required for her character and stands out particularly in a scene where she explains to Bala exasperatedly that how important it is to look good because that's all she has.

The film scores primarily because of good writing. Niren Bhatt creates a perfect ambience of a small town that may have reached out to the world through social media but is still years behind with its mindset.

I enjoyed 'Bala' most for its tribute to Hindi cinema. Yami and Ayushmann's love story is mostly depicted through some hilarious tik-tok videos featuring some old classic of the 1990s. Then there are multiple references of Bachchan and SRK as Bala's clearly a fan of the two superstars. One scene in the second half particularly stands out as Bala and his two friends, while drinking, lament about Bala's luck but in Bachchan's quintessential style. All three actors- Khurrana, Jaffery, and Bannerjee- are pitch-perfect in the scene which has got to be the best scene that Bollywood has produced this year.

There are portions in the second half which may sound a tad bit preachy but 'Bala' ultimately triumphs because of the performances, screenplay and the overall message that as a society we need to loosen up and accept people as what they are. There are no set standards of beauty and its high time that we force everyone to look a certain type.

Go watch 'Bala', laugh along with the characters, learn and unlearn a few things.

One of the greatest challenges for any filmmaker is to make his story engaging and entertaining. And when the storyline is predictable, the challenges double-up because the audience already knows how the story will be and it is a bigger struggle to keep them glued nevertheless.

His transformation from a superfluous young man to someone who finally understands to value human beings more than looks is shown beautifully and Khurrana never slips from the character making Bala almost an extension of himself. 'Bala' review: Ayushmann Khurrana's film tackles societal prejudices head-on

It is almost 2020, and Bollywood still finds joy in making films on adultery. A middle-class married man wanting to look out of his marriage out of sheer boredom in his life and befriending a young damsel (not in distress) just for fun and then hiding the relationship from his wife is a story bit too dated. And while we shrug and say ‘Men will be men’, director Mudassar Aziz lets the women take control of the situation and teach a lesson or two to the philandering man in his new film ‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’.

A remake of a rather controversial, sexist 1973 film by the same name, the 2019 version tries to adapt an age-old story but with contemporary twists to the narrative. The story is set in Kanpur, a small-town city in northern India, which is trying to strike a balance between modernity and traditional values. So you have Chintu, the husband( Kaartik Aaryan) as the complacent middle-class man who is rather jaded with mundanities in his life. He works in the Public Works Department of the city and has a feisty, ambitious wife Vedika (Bhumi Pednekar) who has a mind of her own and wants him to shift to Delhi for a better life, which Chintu relents obviously. Three years into the marriage, things seem to be going great, just that the routine has crept into their relationship as a third wheel and distance – both emotional and in bed- seemed to have increased over a period of time.

Enter Tapasya (Ananya Panday) a sassy designer from Delhi who seeks Chintu’s help to get a plot to set up a manufacturing unit in Kanpur. Chintu cooks up a story of a fictional affair that wife is having to gain sympathy from Tapasya and in turn spend more time with her. Naturally, a web of lies complicates Chintu's life and even though his best friend Fahim (Aparshakti Khurana) helps him cover up his tracks, he still questions his intent and loyalty at every step.

Aziz, who has written the screenplay as well as the dialogues, gives the two women more individuality and lets them take charge even as the men (Chintu, Fahim and Vedika’s ardent admirer Rakesh Yadav) fumble at every step. Bollywood has churned out several films on infidelity but in most, the men have come out clean, unscathed and hero-like. In ‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’, the strongest character is that of Vedika’s who has a mind of her own, is ambitious and even a fan following in the college where she teaches. So when she finds out about her cheating husband, her reaction is far more practical than her screen contemporaries. She is stunned, but never breaks down or loses control- instead, she walks out without really creating much fuss about her crumbling marriage.

The film wins primarily for how it deals with the women characters. Even Tapasya is shown to have a lot of confidence and a strong mind- attributes that Chintu lack. She is not ready to play the home breaker initially and is even okay to talk it out with the wife before taking the plunge with Chintu.

The three leads do a credible job in the film, that propel the viewing experience. Aryan plays the flawed, charming Chintu effortlessly. After Ayushmann Khurrana, Aaryan seems to have adapted the small-town hero template well and gets the dialects, the mannerism of a middle-class married man quite well. Panday, in her second film after ‘Student Of The Year 2’, plays a character far more mature and older than her age quite convincingly. She fits the big city girl with a good heart template well and the young actress exudes confidence as Tapasya.

The film though has Pednekar and Aparshakti Khurana in top form. A credible actress, Pednekar exudes a different level sass as the ambitious, practical, sultry Vedika who knows she is still desired by men- with or without a marriage tag attached to her. Pednekar’s Vedika is smug but loving and practical and a far cry from her character in her debut film ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha’ but the actress plays this part with absolute ease. Aparshakti Khurrana, who has by now aced playing the Hero’s friend films, gets the best lines in the film and does complete justice to his character as Fahim. Fahim and Chintu’s camaraderie provide the maximum laughs and it is a delight to watch Khurrana play the cocky loyal Fahim with such conviction.

Not just the characters but even the narrative is very topical where Aziz slips in jokes on minority and marginalisation, Indian’s obsession with winter weddings and even caste elitism. The lines are clever and witty and lift an otherwise ordinary narrative.

The film tends to get preachy in the second half though when the characters indulge in conversation of morals, the importance of love in marriage and loyalty. Those portions seem a bit stretched and puncture an otherwise breezy narrative.

‘Pati, Patni Aur Woh’ may be predictable but it still works for its lines, the actors and its contemporary take on marriage. It may not leave a lasting impression on you, but while you are watching it, you will find yourself rooting for the wife.

'Pati, Patni Aur Woh' review: Predictable story but with a contemporary twist

Bhumi Pednekar, who recently launched her pan India campaign of `Climate Warrior,` reposted a post about the bushfires from climate activist Greta Thunberg and explained how it could be related to the current climate emergency in the world. View this post on Instagram #Repost @gretathunberg with @get_repost ・・・ Australia is on fire. And the summer there has only just begun. 2019 was a year of record heat and record drought. Today the temperature outside Sydney was 48,9°C. 500 million (!!) animals are estimated dead because of the bushfires. Over 20 people have died and thousands of homes have burned to ground. The fires have spewed 2/3 of the nations national annual CO2 emissions, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The smoke has covered glaciers in distant New Zealand (!) making them warm and melt faster because of the albedo effect. And yet. All of this still has not resulted in any political action. Because we still fail to make the connection between the climate crisis and increased extreme weather events and nature disasters like the #AustraliaFires That has to change. And it has to change now. My thoughts are with the people of Australia and those affected by these devastating fires. A post shared by Bhumi✨ (@bhumipednekar) on Jan 4, 2020 at 9:18pm PST × Actor Dia Mirza, who has always been vocal about social issues, also shared a post about the devastating disaster on her account. The actor shared a picture of a seemingly helpless koala bear held by fire security officials and penned a long caption urging the people to act on the situation."This is also real. This is also happening. This must stop. We can stop this. Come together. Stay united. Act on climate. Invest in nature. Secure/protect forests. Grow indigenous trees. Empower organisations and individuals who make a difference. Learn the facts. Don`t be scared. Don`t run. Don`t hide. Face it. Feel it. Spend time with children. HEAR them," reads Mirza`s caption. Pataudi scion Soha Ali Khan shared a series of informative pictures about the growling forest fires and wrote: "It is hard to imagine that while we are on holiday in Sydney having such a wonderful time in the parks and farms, there are catastrophic fires blazing in many parts of Australia, not so far from us." "People have lost their lives, their homes and millions of animals have been killed. In case you have only just started reading about the fires in Australia, here is what you need to know about them and how you can help," further read her caption.
