<p>Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha's new film <em>Bheed </em>brings back the terrible memories of 2020 when the world was under a lockdown. This was the first wave of the pandemic, when most were clueless of what they were fighting for, and the extent of the disease. The misinformation and lack of awareness were in plenty. In India, the lockdown also led to a mass exodus of immigrants from big cities attempting to return to their villages after being left without shelter and jobs overnight. The situation was unprecedented, with authorities unable to tackle the sea of humans struggling to reach home through various means, resulting in several tragic deaths and arbitrary arrests. In <em>Bheed</em>, Sinha takes various news snippets to weave a story of an India that we seldom talk about but one that exists within all of us. One of discrimination, of privileges, of caste divisions.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Starring an ensemble cast of Rajkummar Rao, Pankaj Kapur, Bhumi Pednekar, Ashutosh Rana, Dia Mirza, Kritika Kamra and Aditya Srivastava- <em>Bheed </em>is an amalgamation of the migrant crisis that gripped India and showed us the other side of our country which is often overlooked.&nbsp;<br />

Rao plays a junior cop, who is given a charge of a police picket of a state border as the Indian government announced total lockdown. The police picket is a temporary one with Rao as its temporary in-charge. Born in a lower caste family, Rao's Surya Kumar Singh Tikas wants to make the most of the opportunity at hand. He is a law-enforcing authority and aware of his powers but ever so often stumbles in front of those who have upper-caste surnames- even if they may be from lower strata of the society.&nbsp;</p>

There are buses full of immigrants, some who have walked for miles for days, kins of politicians, &nbsp;and the urban elite- all gathered at that picket Tikas is 'in-charge' of. All hungry, tired, and easily agitable - and he along with fellow cop Singh Ji has to manage them there until he gets clearance from the top bosses.&nbsp;<br />

Written by Anubhav Sinha, Saumya Tiwari, and Sonali Jain, - the picket serves as a way to represent India, ridden by disparities, by caste, and class politics where a Brahmin watchman is pitted against a Dalit cop, an urban elite forces her driver to follow a young girl on a bicycle through the fields in order to reach her daughter's hostel. A health worker has to intervene when a bus full of Muslims is forced to sit inside in the heat because they have been labeled as 'super-spreaders' by the news agencies and a journalist has to look beyond her TRPs, perfect visually moving to understand the plight of the people around her.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a way, <em>Bheed </em>serves as a spiritual sequel to Sinha's previous two films- <em>Article 15</em> and <em>Mulk</em>. Both talking of minorities in India. And Sinha seems to have taken note of the criticism that came his way when <em>Article 15</em> had released and had an upper caste as an agent of change in a caste-ridden police station. In <em>Bheed</em> the lead is from the minority, fighting inner demons even as he yields power and authority over those who have oppressed his community for a long.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The film opens with gut-wrenching incidents when a train ran over a bunch of sleepy and tired labourers. The scene is a grim reminder of how the country had failed most of its people and yet, two years on- the same people are back in cities, serving the privileged- a fact that a disgruntled cameraperson of a media outlet poignantly points out to the idealist journalist.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Shot entirely in black and white by Soumik Mukherjee, the canvas doesn't take any middle ground and shows the two extremes of society effectively.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Performances by the entire cast is praiseworthy but Rao and Pankaj Kapur are scene stealers in their respective roles. Anguished, helpless, and in pain- both display myriad emotions through their stellar work.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The film, after -several cuts that take out 'controversial' scenes of brutality, does not get into the blame-game business. The stories and incidents are known, but Sinha deftly handles sensitive issues of the pandemic that leave a defining mark on the viewer.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
<em>Bheed</em> is not to be missed at any cost. It is gut-wrenching, and brings back horrific memories but still an important film of our times.&nbsp;</p>

Bheed review: Anubhav Sinha shows the grim side of Incredible India

<p>Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha is back with yet another hard-hitting social drama called <em>Bheed</em>. The film's trailer was unveiled on Friday and lead actor Rajkummar Rao shared it on Instagram. The film looks back at the migrant crisis that gripped India during the lockdown in 2020.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"In the darkest times faced by the nation, one man will dare to make a difference. Trailer out now! #Bheed, in cinemas on 24th March," Rajkummar captioned the post.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The film documents the dark phase during the lockdown when state borders were sealed for fear of the spread of novel coronavirus and thousands of migrants had to travel by foot to return to their native place.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
The trailer shows how scores were stranded away from home, literally under the open sky, bringing back painful memories of the Partition of India in 1947.<br />
<br />
The film stars Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Pankaj Kapoor, Ashutosh Rana, Dia Miza and Kiriti Kamra in pivotal roles and is all set to hit the theatres on March 24, 2023.</p>

His lady love Sapna (Bhumi Pednekar) grunts, yells and threatens him on a daily basis frustrated at waiting in the wings while Lala gets his sisters married one by one.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apart from the eldest Geeta, the rest are constantly taunted by Lala and the society at large for being fat, dark and for not being feminine enough. The man has to not only find suitable boys for his sisters but also gather the dowry money for each of them. Seems like a herculean task for a man who sells savouries for a living. While time is ticking on his relationship with Sapna, how Lala manages to get his sisters married forms the rest of the story.</p>

<p>Social issues are best dealt with comically. '<strong>Raksha Bandhan' </strong>is no different. Besides the script that tries to lighten the mood while dealing with something as serious as dowry, it also features <strong>Akshay Kumar</strong> a man who is known for his comic timing. Kumar as the hassled, dutiful older brother cake walks through his part but is also very loud and melodramatic in his depiction of his character.</p>

For a greater part of the film, no one really asks the sisters what they want to do in life. All seem to be okay with the fact that their brother will pay a hefty amount to get them married off. Set in present times, it is rather bizarre to see these young women who are comfortable with their body type and skin and yet seem okay to the dowry system.&nbsp;<br />

Most characters cry at the drop of a hat. Akshay Kumar gets emotional in almost every other scene. When his sister's marriage is fixed, he wells up. When he is angry with his ancestors he screams, cries and throws stones at their photos. Not just him, his sisters, his girlfriend - all have the waterworks ready at the drop of a hat.&nbsp;<br />
<br />
Certain characters are constantly shamed for their body type, and the colour of their skin and even when the characters turn a new leaf, they never apologise for being so obtuse with their criticism. It's 2022 and any joke on skin colour and body type should not be accepted irrespective of the greater intent of the film. Writers really need to think hard while writing such scripts and be more imaginative with lines and situations. The old tropes of making fun of a fat girl and her diet are done and dusted.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Second half of the film is impactful</strong><br />

While the first half is cringe-worthy with all the melodrama and impractical storyline, the film redeems itself to a great extent in the second half when the film finally gets its voice and does its messaging clearly. By then, as an audience, you are more immune to loud acting that's on display. Instead, you will find yourself cheering at some powerful lines on empowering the women instead of considering them as liabilities- lines that come very late in the film.<br />
<br />
None of the performances is great. Akshay Kumar, who is known for comic timing hams throughout the film. So do the rest of the cast. Bhumi Pednekar, an otherwise powerful performer, has limited screen time and her character is not well written. She barely gets any scope to emote. Newcomer Sadia Khatib, who plays the eldest sister Geeta, shows some spark in her limited role.&nbsp;</p>

ED alleges that Sukesh Chandrasekhar's close aide Pinky Irani, also known as Angel, 53, approached actors and models and even took some of them to Tihar Jail to meet him.<br />

Irani had been arrested by the agency in December last year and was recently granted bail by a Delhi court. She has been accused of money laundering and helping Chandrasekhar establish contact with actor Jacqueline Fernandez and sending her expensive gifts on his behalf.<br />
<br />
A supplementary charge sheet, detailing the role of Mumbai-based Irani in the money laundering case against Chandrasekhar, was filed by the Enforcement Directorate earlier this month before a court.<br />
<br />
In the prosecution complaint, ED has attached replies sent to it by Bollywood actors Bhumi Pednekar, Sara Ali Khan and Janhvi Kapoor, who were similarly approached by Chandrasekhar allegedly through Irani.<br />
<br />
Investigators found that Chandrasekhar, while he was at Delhi's Rohini jail, allegedly ran an extortion racket using phone spoofing technology. He was later shifted to the Tihar jail.<br />

The ED has named the actresses and models are witnesses and not as accused in the case.&nbsp;<br />

According to the charge sheet filed, Bhumi Pednekar stated that Irani messaged her saying she was the "vice president (of) HR News Express Post and informed her that their group chairman (Chandrasekhar) is a fan of hers and wanted to speak with her about a huge project and also wanted to gift her a car." Pednekar was questioned earlier this year.&nbsp;<br />

Pednekar stated that she did not receive any gift from Chandrasekhar or Irani nor had she ever met them or had "any sort of personal interaction, either social or professional, with them."<br />

Sara Ali Khan told the ED that she did not know anyone by the name of Sukesh Chandrasekhar but someone in the name of "Mr Suraj Reddy did WhatsApp her on 21.05.2021saying he would like to gift her a car as a family gesture and mentioned that his CEO Mrs Irani had tried to contact her."<br />

Khan revealed that Reedy continued to insist on giving her gifts and she refused the same.&nbsp;<br />

"However, after many attempts of refusing him, she did agree on receiving a box of chocolates from him and thereafter he sent a Franck Muller watch along with the chocolates," the ED said.<br />

Meanwhile, Janhvani Kapoor revealed she was contacted by a lady who identified herself as Leena for a Nail art company called Nail Artistry. Kapoor was approached to be a celebrity guest at the launch of a salon in Bengaluru.&nbsp;<br />
She wrote to ED stating that she inaugurated the salon in July last year and received a Christian Dior luxury bag and a professional fee of ₹ 18.94 lakh in her bank account. She sent a statement of the transaction to the ED.<br />

The same-sex closeness is depicted without being quote-unquote "icky". You can definitely watch this film with your family.</p>

Do not expect anything Rajshri-esque from 'Badhaai Do' based on this description above because the movie deals with gender issues. Shardul (Rajkummar Rao) is a hunky policeman in Dehradun who is hiding from the world the fact that he is gay. He is stationed in a police station that has mostly woman police officers. He desperately trying for a transfer. Suman (Bhumi Pednekar) is a Physical Education teacher in what looks like one of the elite Dehradun schools. She is hiding her identity as a Lesbian. Paths of Shardul and Suman cross and after a very brief 'courtship', Shardul proposes a marriage of convenience that will keep respective families from hounding them to get 'settled' in life by way of traditional marriage. The win-win deal is sealed quickly. Marriage is done and dusted and the couple starts living under one roof, husband and wife for the world but 'roommates' to one another, as they put it. There is no physical intimacy between them and both indulge in love with those of their respective preference. What follows is a game of careful balancing as both families do not know any of this. <p>The congratulatory part of 'Badhaai Do' is that it has no connection with the wonderful 'Badhaai Ho'. So when 'Badhaai Teen' comes along, don’t go expecting to know anything about what happens to Neena &nbsp;Gupta and Gajraj Rao after their belated parenthood.</p>

<p>To my guarded amusement, &nbsp;I find 'Badhaai Do' to be one of those pseudo-liberal films that Ayushmann Khurrana has made a career out of. I wonder how he missed out on this one. Apparently he didn’t have the time as his beefy avatar was busy wooing a transgender in 'Chandigarh Kare Aashiqui'. Khurrana’s loss is Rajkummar Rao’s gain; Rao plays a brawny cop named Shardul &nbsp;Thakur who makes an offer to Sumu Singh(Bhumi Pednekar) that she can’t refuse.</p>

<p>He is gay. She is &nbsp;gay. &nbsp;Agay dekhte jao.</p>

There are jokes about Pednekar North-Eastern partner(Chum Darang) trying to pass off as cousins(curious disbelieving stares from the supporting cast); there is even a joke about &nbsp;Rao not being able to bear children because “it” is too tiny. Haha.</p>

<p>Rao and Pednekar,both safely straight in real life, &nbsp;get a chance to feel superior by playing homosexual characters. This is the film that the two actors can show to their children when they reach the age of consent and brag about how liberal they are.</p>

<p>If the truth be told there is nothing funny, let alone liberal, &nbsp;about such tragic marriages of convenience. Gay men and straight women trapped in convenient “arranged” marriages are bad enough. Here you want to show two homosexual individuals acting as each other’s beards and you want to generate laughter out of this tragic circumstance.</p>

<p>Last year there was a dreadful film about a relationship between a gay man and a lesbian woman: 'Akele Hum Akele Tum'. At least it didn’t try to raise laughter out of the couple’s mutual deviancy. Here in 'Badhaai Do' seasoned actors like Sheeba Chaddha, Loveleen Mishra and Seema Pahwa join in the "fun". Decency be damned.<br />

<p>Hindi cinema has truly come a long way. Gone are the days when women were projected as a beacon of positivity, an inspiration, the holier than thou. In the past few years, filmmakers have not just given women a voice, but also projected them as flawed, imperfect individuals who fumble and learn from their mistakes. In Alankrita Shrivastava's 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' -the two leading ladies Dolly and Kitty are not brazen or rebellious but flawed personalities who deal with misogyny, sexism and discover sexual liberation.</p>

<p>Set in Greater Noida, the story explores the lives of two cousins Dolly and Kitty who may object to each other's life choices, feel competitive and argue- but ultimately are each other's biggest support system.</p>

<p>Dolly (Konkona Sen Sharma), the elder one has lived in denial about things in life. Separated from her mother at a young age, she tries to overachieve in order to prove to no one in particular how perfect her life is. Trapped in a sex-less marriage and a mundane job, she tries to fill the void by materialistic things- clothes, new AC, a flat. She also has to deal with her younger son's eagerness to be a girl. While she disapproves almost everything her sister Kitty or Kajal (Bhumi Pednekar) does, secretly she pines to be like her.</p>

<p>Kajal, on the other hand, has just come to the big city from Darbhanga, Bihar. Slightly naive, a bit vulnerable, she lands herself a job as a caller of a paid romance app that has men calling to fulfill their sexual desires. Initially apprehensive about the work she does, she eventually finds comfort with the money she earns and even befriends a caller called Pradeep (Vikrant Massey).</p>

<p>Srivastava's last outing on the big screen 'Lipstick Under My Burkha' will always be remembered for the amazing Bua Ji's character who gave a voice to thousands like her, burdened all their lives with responsibilities of the family, desperate to get affection, love from someone all their lives. Much like 'Lipstick...', 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' explores the sexual ambition of the women- who discover love, lust and even orgasm. In one poignant scene, as Kitty explains how men only like phone-sex, she rues that there should be a similar app for women's desires. The film in fact is spruced with such little moments. The one where Dolly meets her estranged mother (scene stealer Neelima Azim) is precious, then the scene where Dolly's younger son Pappu admires himself dressed as a doll at the museum is so beautifully written.</p>

<p>It is so refreshing to see Konkona Sen Sharma in a film after a long time. The gifted actress is so natural as the slightly shrewd, competitive, and aspirational Dolly. Giving her able support, shining with her own performance is Pednekar, who in a short span of time has proved her mettle with each of her films. It really is a joy to watch the two powerful, confident actors complementing each other and delivering stellar performances.</p>

<p>The men in the film too are good. Amir Bashir as Dolly's husband, Vikrant Massey as Pradeep and Amol Parasher as Dolly's crush Omar are in supportive characters but do absolute justice to their roles.</p>

<p>The film though flaws at the scripting level. While it begins on a high, it slowly meanders and delves in too many topics thereby not digging deeper in any of them. Casual sexism at work, misogyny, gender stereotypes- all have been stuffed in a script which could focus on just the two women rediscovering their voice. The climax is one of the messiest ones in recent times where the director gives a hat tip to female rappers and their repressed voice and even puts up a giant installation of a vagina that has no context to the plot. The film fumbles majorly with its overcrowded issues.</p>

<p>Despite the flaws, 'Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare' makes for a good watch only because of its two main leads. The women are confident actors, deliver assured performances and manage to shine in a film with that cramps up too much in too little time. Maybe if they had made it into a web series, they would have been able to more justice to the story. Just a thought!</p>
