Asian Games: Curious case of Jyothi Yarraji winning silver despite finishing third in women's 100m hurdles

The Indian Athletics contingent is on fire during the ongoing Asian Games 2023, with several athletes across different disciplines winning medals, including gold. Favourite in the 3000m steeplechase, India’s Avinash Sable created history by winning his maiden Asiad gold in record timing. Alongside him, Tajinder Pal Singh Toor also delivered his best shot to stay on the top in the shot put.

In the 3000m steeplechase final, Sable was heads and shoulders ahead of everyone, building a distance between him and everyone in the race and winning it by a massive difference. Such was his performance that when he looked behind when around 50m were left, none was catching up, and he won the gold medal in style. He took top honours with a timing of 8:19:50s, breaking the Games record along the way.

Tajinder Toor shines in Shot Put

Asian Games: Avinash Sable sets new record; Tajinder Pal Singh Toor also bags gold in shot put

An athletics official suffered a broken leg and serious bleeding after being hit by a misthrown hammer in the Asian Games in Hangzhou, but his vital signs are now stable, a spokesman for the games said on Sunday.

Just before 8 p.m. (1200 GMT) on Saturday, Kuwait's Ali Zankawi lined up for one of his throws in the men's hammer final at the eastern Chinese city's packed Olympic stadium. But instead of soaring straight onto the outfield, the hammer flew out sideways and low to the right, smashing into the leg of the sitting technical official.

India beat Pakistan in thriller

It was not the best start for India as Pakistan dominated the first match in the best-of-three finals with Mahesh Mangaonkar losing in straight games against Nasir Iqbal. The dominant Pakistan star won 11-8, 11-3, 11-2 to rally past Mangaonkar in a one-sided contest. Mangaonkar was earlier beaten 6-11, 11-13, 11-9, 8-11 by Iqbal in the group stage.

India then had a must-win situation as veteran Saurav Ghosal stepped in at the crucial moment. He would conquer the contest 11-5, 11-1, 11-3 to get India back in the gold medal contest. The win came in next to no time as Saurav showcased his experience at the court. Sourav had earlier beaten Muhammad Asim 11-3, 11-5, 11-1 in the group stage meeting and showed no signs of slowing down.

With the best of the three finals leveled at 1-1, both India and Pakistan had their eyes on the gold with Abhay Singh and Noor Zaman playing in a decisive contest. Having lost to Noor Zaman in the group stage of the Asian Games earlier, Abhay had a score to settle with the Pakistan player. The Indian acer started on the front foot as he pocketed the first game 11-7 assuring early dominance.

Noor would then come back to win the second game 11-9 in a tight finish while he was the dominant force in the third. Despite being level at 7-7, the Pakistani player won four consecutive points in the third game to win and give Pakistan a 2-1 lead in the decisive final contest. With the gold medal slipping away, Abhay would then show high-level commitment to win the fourth game 11-9, despite trailing 7-9 at one stage. Pakistan needed just two points to win the gold medal at that point.

With the match reaching anticlimax, Abhay and Noor went toe-to-toe in the final game to decide the gold medal. However, the Indian star lost concentration at 8-8 as Noor would win the next two points to have two match points. Abhay however won the next four points to win the match and clinch a historic gold medal for India.

Asian Games: Boxer Nikhat Zareen secures Olympic quota; assures medal after semifinal win

An Afghan boxer has been provisionally suspended for failing a doping test at the Asian Games, the International Testing Agency (ITA) said, the first reported drugs case at the event. The 37-year-old Mohammad Khaibar Nooristani, who was defeated on Monday in the preliminary rounds of the 71kg weight class in Hangzhou, tested positive for two banned substances, the ITA said.

Both were anabolic steroids. The boxer was tested four days before his bout but it takes time for positive results to come through. "The sample was collected by the ITA at the Asian Games Hangzhou during an out-of-competition anti-doping control performed on September 21, 2023," the body said Thursday. "The athlete has been informed of the case and has been provisionally suspended with immediate effect. He has the right to request the analysis of the B-sample."

Speaking earlier this week, Mani Jegathesan, an adviser to the Olympic Council of Asia's anti-doping committee, warned that drug cheats at the Games would be rooted out. "Every athlete participating in these Games must understand that they could be picked at any time," Jegathesan warned. "That is the best step to ensuring we have a clean event."

There are about 12,000 athletes at the 19th Asian Games, more competitors than at the Olympics, and Jegathesan admitted it would be impossible to test them all. Instead, they will prioritise, including picking out those who break world or Asian records. They will also home in on athletes if they receive "intelligence".

'Had tears in my eyes': Mandhana on India women's Asian Games gold, recalls Chopra's Tokyo 2020 feat

India women, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, won the gold in Asian Games cricket, beating Sri Lanka by 19 runs in the final. Batting first, India women scored 116/7 on a slow and turning pitch but Titas Sadhu's three wickets for six runs in four overs helped them defend the target.

India's start was a modest one after winning the toss with Shafali Varma getting out cheaply in the fourth over for a team total of 16 runs. Smriti Mandhana (46) Jemimah Rodrigues (42) added 73 runs for the second wicket to put India's innings on track on a difficult pitch. After Mandhana's fall in the 15th over, Indian innings lost a bit of steam as they lost quick wickets with four in last four overs.

The Women in Blue finally managed 116/7 in their 20 overs as no other batter apart from Mandhana and Rodrigues could score in double figures. For Sri Lanka, Udeshika Prabodhani, Sugandika Kumari and Inoka Ranaweera took two wickets each.

Chasing 117, Sri Lanka scored 12 off the first over but they met Titas Sadhu in the third over who bowled a double-wicket maiden to dent their chase. Sadhu took one more wicket in her next over and gave away just one run. Hasini Perera and Nilakshi de Silva then tried to stable the innings with a 36-run partnership but Pooja Vastrakar got Perera out.

Oshadi Ranasinghe then held one hand as she and de Silva wiped off another 28 runs of the target as Sri Lanka needed 38 runs off last four overs. Indian bowlers then kept the pressure on and took three more wickets to leave Sri Lankan chase in tatters.

The Island nation could only manage 97 runs in the end for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs as India won the game and the gold.

The three Indian martial arts athletes unable to compete at the Hangzhou Asian Games due to a politically-charged visa issue are "mentally broken" by the affair, team-mates told Reuters on Sunday.

The absent trio - Mepung Lamgu, Nyeman Wangsu and Onilu Tega - come from Arunachal Pradesh, a state in the northeast of India which China claims as part of Tibet.

The Wushu athletes were issued with stapled China visas instead of stamped ones, according to India's foreign ministry, meaning they could not travel as India does not accept stapled visas as valid. "I trained in the camps with them, but it feels so sad because they also tried very hard to get in this position," Anjul Namdeo, 31, told Reuters, after a sixth-placed finish in the men's Changquan final.

"As an athlete I feel very bad, but it's up to the ministry. I can't do anything.

"Sometimes they talk to me because it’s every sports players dream to perform in this arena, biggest arena like this," Namdeo added. "It's like Asia's olympics. So they feel sad. They feel broken, you can say, because they also trained so hard."

Chinese President Xi Jinping will declare the Asian Games open at a glittering ceremony in Hangzhou on Saturday, kickstarting a sporting behemoth that boasts more athletes than the Olympics.

After being delayed by a year due to China's strict zero-Covid regime, more than 12,000 competitors from 45 nations across Asia and the Middle East are in the eastern city to compete in 40 sports.

Xi is scheduled to open proceedings officially in one of the country's most prosperous regions, in front of invited guests including Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Assad -- on his first visit to China since war erupted in Syria in 2011 -- will join leaders from ally Cambodia, Kuwait, and Nepal, among others at Hangzhou's Olympic stadium, state media said.

The Games are "likely to be China's post-pandemic soft power exercise in the fully packed stadium with the presence of political and business leaders in Asia," Jung-Woo Lee, sport policy expert at the University of Edinburgh, told AFP.

But the Games have already been rocked by a row between New Delhi and China, with a trip to Hangzhou by India's sports minister cancelled on Friday.

It followed three women martial arts fighters from the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh claiming they were denied accreditation, a move China disputed.

The northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh is claimed almost in full by Beijing, which calls it "South Tibet".

China's status as a sporting destination took a severe hit during the first three years of the pandemic, when snap lockdowns and travel rules saw almost all international events cancelled in the country.

The Indian women’s team has advanced to the semifinals of the Asian Games after rain played spoilsport in their contest against Malaysia women’s team on Thursday, September 21. After ending their innings at 173/2, Malaysia’s innings did not get going as rain played spoilsport. The officials then consulted both the captains as there was no sign of improvement in the weather and conditions. Ultimately, the contest was called off and India advanced to the last four courtesy of being the higher-seeded team at the Asian Games.

India advance

Playing in their first match, the Indian team received a bye for the initial phase and directly entered the quarterfinals of the Asian Games. Led by Smriti Mandhana in the absence of suspended skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, the India team was asked to bat first after Malaysia won the toss. Shafali Verma smashed 67 runs off 39 deliveries to set the pace while she suffered a reported injury scare.

The Indian team initially lost skipper Mandhana for 27 in the powerplay, but it was Jemimah Rodrigues and Shafali who laid the foundation for a big score. Jemimah remained unbeaten on 47 and stitched an 86-run stand for the second wicket with Shafali before the latter was dismissed. Richa Ghosh would then join hands with Jemimah as they helped India reach 173/2 in the 20 overs.

Earlier, rain had interrupted the Indian innings and was the feature again in Malaysia’s innings as well. Having started the innings, the play was halted again in the first over with the score 1-0 in two balls. The drizzle continued after that, forcing the match to be called off.

Technically the march ended in a draw due to uneven playing conditions while India advanced for being the higher seed.

India will next take the field on Sunday in the semifinal clash with an eye on the gold medal contest. Interestingly, India’s progress into the next round guarantees regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to participate in the Asian Games, as she will either play in the gold medal match (if India win the semifinal) or the bronze medal match (if India lose in the semifinal). She was initially suspended for two games by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for abrupt behaviour during the Bangladesh tour.

Olympic and world javelin champion Neeraj Chopra will give his all at the Diamond League final later this month and at the Asian Games that follows but finishing the season injury-free is high on his agenda, the Indian athlete said on Friday. The mop-haired 25-year-old became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships, throwing 88.17 metres to secure victory in Budapest on Sunday.

He followed it with a more modest 85.71 metres at the Diamond League meeting in Zurich on Thursday to finish behind Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch (85.86).

"In events like Olympics or World Championships, you have to give 100 per cent," Chopra, whose personal best remains 89.94 metres, told reporters. "I had already qualified for the Diamond League final, so I could afford to take it slightly easy here.

The Sports Authority of India (SAI) insisted that the Olympic medallist wrestler Bajrang Punia attends the trials for the upcoming World Championships or provides a fitness certificate for exemption.

Bajrang reportedly plans to forgo the trials on August 25, 26, to focus on the overseas training for the Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China. Fellow Olympic medalist Deepak Punia is also following the same path, showing disinterest in participating in the World Championships, starting on September 16 in Belgrade.

Seasoned Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar took to social media to vent out her frustration and disappointment due to the uncertainty looming over the selection of the gymnastics team for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, to kick off on September 23 in Hangzhou, China.

On Tuesday (Aug 15), Dipa detailed a "demotivating and discouraging" turn of events, claiming that she is fearing missing out on the forthcoming mega event despite topping the selection trials conducted by the Gymnastics Federation of India (GFI) in July.

On July 26, the GFI named a nine-member gymnastics team, including Dipa for the Asian Games following the trials conducted in Bhubaneshwar. However, the twist came when the sports ministry reportedly informed the GFI that only two of the nine qualified gymnasts met the selection criteria.

According to the rule set on July 10, "the performance of the sportspersons should not be less than the performance achieved by the 8th position holder of the 2018 Asian Games in measurable sports in individual events during the last 12 months prior to the commencement of the event".

Despite being at the top of the selection trials, with an all-round score of 47.05, Dipa's name went missing from the final list of athletes.

As the country is busy celebrating another year of Independence, the Rio Olympics star shared her disappointment in a series of posts on X, earlier known as Twitter.

"On this #IndependenceDay, I am using my freedom of speech to discuss recent events that have proven to be very demotivating and discouraging. The #AsianGames2023, an event I have eagerly anticipated for the past two years, looks further than it is."

"To my surprise, despite topping the national trials and meeting the @IndiaSports selection criteria, it appears that I will be deprived of the opportunity to participate in the @19thAGofficial.

"Worse still, the reasons behind this decision are unknown to me and have not been communicated officially. Instead, my fellow gymnasts and I are left to read about our exclusion from the Games in the news and I simply don’t know what to make of it," she added.

Seasoned Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar took to social media to vent out her frustration and disappointment due to the uncertainty looming over the selection of the gymnastics team for the upcoming Asian Games 2023, to kick off on September 23 in Hangzhou, China.
