China's Hangzhou city will stage the "greatest ever" Asian Games next month, acting Olympic Council of Asia head Randhir Singh told Reuters on Friday, asserting OCA's internal issues will not impact the continental event.

The OCA has run into troubles after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) refused to recognise its elections last month, and asked India's Singh to carry on as its acting president.

The IOC has banned Kuwait's Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah for three years for his "undeniable impact" in the OCA elections in which his brother, Sheikh Talal Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, was appointed president of the continental body.

Former Olympic skeet shooter Singh was first appointed acting president of the OCA in 2021 when Sheikh Ahmad stepped down as president after being convicted by a Swiss criminal court of forgery. Sheikh Ahmad has denied any wrongdoing.

"The OCA election has nothing to do with the organisation of the Games," Singh told Reuters by telephone sounding upbeat about the Games, which could not be held last year because of COVID-19 restrictions in China.

"Hangzhou was all ready to host it last year itself. Venues are ready, everything is in place, and I'm sure we are going to see the greatest ever Asian Games."

The IOC is reviewing the OCA election process in which Sheikh Talal edged out Husain Al-Musallam 24-20 to head the Asian body, which had his father, Sheikh Fahad Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, as its first president.

The IOC, in an Aug. 9 letter seen by Reuters, asked both candidates not to engage with OCA's voting members until the completion of the review process.

Singh, who has been chairman of the coordination committee for the Hangzhou Games, said it was too early to talk about the next OCA elections.

"Right now, we have to go by what the IOC instructs us. We have to go by the Olympic Charter and ethics is the most important aspect of it."

"After the IOC completes its review and submits report, we'll get an idea when to hold the next OCA election."

The Games in Hangzhou, a tech hub about 170 km southwest of Shanghai, will be held from September&nbsp;23 to October&nbsp;8.

Veteran India batter Shikhar Dhawan admits being shocked for missing out on Asian Games 2023 call-up. A prolific run-getter at the top of the order, Dhawan said he was hoping for a return to the side, but despite missing out, he is happy for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was named captain for the tournament that starts on September 23.

Dhawan, who last played for India in December 2022, until this time, was the preferred stand-in captain every time first-team players got rested for any series. Having missed out on making the cut this time, Dhawan expressed his disappointment over the same but remains optimistic about an India call-up soon.

Speaking with PTI, Dhawan said he expected to get picked in the squad for the Asian Games. As he accepted&nbsp;the selectors' call to overlook him for reasons unknown to him and the fans, Dhawan admitted to being happy for Ruturaj Gaikwad and the young squad.

"When my name was not there, I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it," Dhawan to PTI. "Happy that Rutu [Gaikwad] will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well."

<h2>Staying fit is still a priority for Dhawan</h2>

India’s finest batter in ICC tournaments since 2013, Dhawan said he continues to work on his fitness should an India return comes calling.

"I will be ready, of course. That is why I keep myself fit. There is always a chance whether it is 1% or 20%.

"I still enjoy training, and I still enjoy the game; these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that."

Adding he is yet to speak with any national selector, Dhawan said he keeps going to NCA for his training – something he enjoys.

"I have not spoken to any selector [about my future]. I keep going to National Cricket Academy [in Bengaluru]. I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career, and I am grateful for it."

Known to be optimistic and grateful at heart, Dhawan echoed his true feelings, saying he is in a happy space. Dhawan, who also captains Punjab Kings in the IPL, wishes to lift the trophy with the franchise next year.

"I am in a very happy state of mind. I am very blessed to have such an amazing career and contribute to the Indian team.

"At this stage, you go year by year. Physically I am very fit and I have an IPL to win for Punjab Kings. Hopefully, we can do that next year," Dhawan said.

Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar, fondly remembered for her ground-breaking fourth-place finish in the Women’s Vault Final event at Rio Games in 2016, has not been recommended in the final list of athletes in individual events for the Asian Games 2023.&nbsp;

Per the latest reports, Dipa’s name is missing from the women’s gymnastics contingent list sent to the sports ministry for approval. Dipa wasn’t considered for selection after failing to fulfil the eligibility criteria, which as per a report in the Times of India (TOI) states, "In a non-measurable individual sport, the player must have achieved 8th rank in the last 12 months."

"In sports events where rankings are not maintained or where sportspersons have not been able to improve their ranking on account of reasons like lack of exposure in international tournaments, appropriate criteria must be adopted by NSFs in consultation with the ministry."

Although Dipa’s name was originally mentioned in the list of athletes shared with the (Asiad) organisers by the deadline (July 15), Pranati Das and Pranati Nayak’s name got finalised for the events at the Asian Games 2023.

"Dipa's name hasn't been considered for final selection. She has been away from gymnastics since 2019 because of injuries and her doping suspension. She hasn't competed in a long time," a source close to the information said.

Meanwhile, during the trials&nbsp;in Bhubaneswar on July 11-12, Dipa claimed the top spot in the women’s artistic gymnastics event. Her name even featured in six separate disciplines - all-around, balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars, vault and team, in the list shared with Asiad organisers.

<h2>Dipa requests SAI for relaxation in criteria</h2>

Based on her results during the trials, Dipa was prompted to write to Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials asking for relaxation in the eligibility criteria. Per TOI, Dipa, in her letter to the officials, wrote,

"I faced several setbacks, including two ACL tears in 2017 and 2019, limited opportunities to compete during the pandemic, and a 21-month suspension that concluded in mid-July 2023 due to a doping violation. I earnestly request the sports ministry to consider my exceptional circumstances and kindly grant the necessary relaxation in the eligibility criteria."

The Asian Games will take place in Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8.

Asian Games 2023: Dipa Karmakar not recommended in final list, requests for relaxation in eligibility criteria

On Tuesday (July 18),&nbsp;the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) ad-hoc panel surprised one and all as it granted direct entries into the Asian Games to Olympic bronze medallist Bajrang Punia and World Championship medallist Vinesh Phogat. The decision has not been well received. It has been taken without the consent of the national chief selectors and irked many other wrestlers and coaches.

Moreover, the WFI made it clear that&nbsp;trials will still take place for all six weight categories across the three styles of wrestling despite them already&nbsp;selecting the wrestlers for the men's freestyle 65kg and women's 53kg categories. After this big step, young wrestler Antim Panghal -&nbsp;who competes in the 53kg category -&nbsp;lashed out at the decision and questioned Vinesh's selection.

<h2>'Vinesh got entry despite not practising for the past year'</h2>

In a video, Panghal -- silver medallist in the senior Asian Championship -- stated, "Vinesh (Phogat) has been given direct entry for Asian Games despite that she has not been practised for past one year. I won the gold medal in the 2022 Junior World Championship. Even in the Commonwealth Games trial, I had a 3-3 bout with her. Then too, I was cheated. Should I quit wrestling? All I want is a fair trial."

Further, Panghal reminded one and all of her recent feats and mentioned Vinesh has no significant achievement under her belt. "Last year, in the Junior World Championships, I won a gold medal and became the first woman wrestler from India to achieve this feat. In the 2023 Asian Championships, I won a silver medal, but Vinesh has no achievement to show in the last year. She was also injured," the 19-year-old pointed out.

<h2>'What is so special about Vinesh?'</h2>

Panghal further highlighted, "Sakshi Malik has also won an Olympic medal, she too is not being sent. What is so special about Vinesh&nbsp;that she is being sent? Just organise trials. I am not saying that I am the only one who can beat Vinesh. There are several other girls who can beat her."

She asserted, "When the CWG trials were taking place, I had bouts against her, then they (officials) cheated me. I said koi nahin (it's okay), I will try to qualify for the Olympics by going to the (Hangzhou) Asian Games. But now they are saying they will send Vinesh. This is not done. They are also saying that the one who goes for the Asian Games will also go for the World Championships. And, the one who wins a medal at the Worlds will go to the Olympics (in Paris). We have also been training hard for years. So, what about us?" In addition, Panghal said, "Should we leave wrestling? Tell us on what basis is she (Vinesh) being sent."

It is to be noted that Panghal has made heads turn of late with her performances. The teenager became India's U-20 World Champion in 2022 and clinched the silver medal at the senior Asian Championship early this year. Bajrang and Vinesh, on the other hand, have displayed exceptional performances in the past but&nbsp;their participation in international tournaments in the ongoing calendar year has been non-existent following their protest against WFI chief&nbsp;Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for sexual harassment.

The forthcoming Asian Games will commence on September 23 and conclude on October 08. They will take place in&nbsp;Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Harmanpreet Kaur to lead Team India as BCCI announces women's squad for Asian Games

Indian wrestlers and the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) were handed a major setback by the organisers of the Asian Games 2022 on Tuesday (July 11) after they rejected the request for an extension of the deadline to name contenders. The IOA had initially requested the Hangzhou Asian Games Organising Committee (HAGOC) to extend the deadline to submit the names of wrestlers participating in the continental event in September. The rejection of the request means that India will have to announce their wrestlers’ contingent for the Hangzhou Games by July 22.

<h2>India handed massive setback</h2>

The setback comes amid the turmoil in Indian wrestling in wake of sexual assault allegations and protests against its chief Brij Bhushan Singh.

India had requested the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) to extend the deadline to submit the names of wrestlers by August 5. With the rejection of the plea, the contingent will have to be named by July 22. Currently, the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) has been facing turmoil, which has seen the elections postponed.

"The Hangzhou Organising Committee has rejected the IOA's request for further extension. They conveyed it to the OCA, and the OCA has conveyed this decision to the IOA," an official source from the Indian Olympic Association revealed to PTI news agency.

Top wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and others have been protesting against the WFI chief and BJP Member of Parliament (MP) Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan since January. Serious allegations of sexual harassment and molestation have been put on the WFI chief and the protests have been going on.

<h2>Panel in limbo</h2>

Currently, the wrestlers’ group inlcuding Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik has requested an extension for the trials before the final squad for the Asian Games is selected. However, since no trials have taken place, the Bhupender Singh Bajwa-headed panel has been left in limbo over the selection of wrestlers for the continental event.

The panel is responsible for holding the trials and selecting the wrestlers for the Asian Games 2022, which were postponed last year.&nbsp;

The HAGOC had earlier fixed July 15 as the cut-off date for all participating nations to provide the names of their athletes for the Asian Games, scheduled to be held from September 23 to October 8.

India handed massive setback The setback comes amid the turmoil in Indian wrestling in wake of sexual assault allegations and protests against its chief Brij Bhushan Singh. Asian Games: Big setback for Indian wrestlers after organisers reject IOA's request for deadline extension

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has finally agreed to send both men's and women's cricket teams to the Asian Games 2023. Due to the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup 2023, India will send a B squad for the men’s cricket team for the Asian Games T20 matches. The Board of Control for Cricket will hand over the list of players to the Indian Olympic Association before June 30. BCCI had not committed to sending cricket teams to the 19th edition of the Asian Games as the tournament would clash with the ICC World Cup schedule. But an Indian Express report claims that the board has rethought its stance. The Asian Games will begin on September 23 and will be held in Hangzhou, China till October 8. India will host the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which will start on October 5. The final of the tournament will be played on November 23.

According to a report in Indian Express, the governing body will send the men's B team to the Asian Games as most of the senior star players will be part of India's World Cup squad. Moreover, the Board is expected to name a strong T20 team for the Asian Games due to India’s huge bench strength.

On the other hand, India will field a senior women's team for the Asian Games. The Women in Blue also have a packed year in 2023. First, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side will travel to Bangladesh next month for a six-match limited-overs tour. In September, the women’s team will most likely have a chance to host South Africa and avenge the India tour of South Africa.

The Indian Women’s cricket team had participated in the 2022 Commonwealth Games, hosted in Birmingham for the first time. The Women in Blue not only gave some amazing performances but also won the silver medal.

Talking of cricket in Asian Games, the sport was first included in the Asian Games in 2010 and was also a part of the 2014 edition. However, cricket was dropped for the Asian Games 2018 edition, which was hosted in Jakarta. It was included in the Asian Games 2022, which was scheduled to take place in September 2022. The event was postponed due China’s zero-covid policy.

Asian Games 2023: BCCI to send women, men’s cricket teams to China

The Wrestlers vs WFI chief episode doesn't seem to be ending anytime soon. With new developments emerging every day, the situation seems to get uglier. This time two fellow wrestlers, Olympians, and colleagues at some point in time, are up against each other. Vinesh Phogat, one of the star wrestlers protesting against WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Singh over sexual harassment, tore into Yogeshwar Dutt, the London 2012 Olympics&nbsp;silver medalist, in a tweet over his latest remarks.

The Olympic medalist-turn BJP politician Yogeshwar Dutt lately went public, tweeting a video criticising the Indian Olympic Association's ad-hoc committee for allowing six of the protesting wrestlers' special one-bout trials in August to qualify for the Asian Games, while the rest of the wrestlers are competing in trials in late June.

In his tweet, Dutt pointed fingers at the committee's controversial decision that to him is unfair to other wrestlers who are vying for a spot in the Asian Games 2023 and also urged the rest of the wrestling community to condemn it. Dutt also called it a 'Black Day for Wrestling.'

Meanwhile, Phogat, who was in the streets protesting against the WFI Chief, didn't mince her words while tearing into Yogeshwar Dutt for his latest remarks.

Vinesh, in her reply to the tweet, slammed the former Olympian and even revealed it was Yogeshwar who intimidated female wrestlers into taking back their sexual harassment complaints against the WFI chief during the Oversight Committee investigation.

"When I heard the video of Yogeshwar Dutt, his ugly laugh stuck in my mind. He was a part of both the committees made for women wrestlers," read excerpts of Vinesh Phogat's tweet. "When female wrestlers were narrating their ordeals in front of the committee, he used to laugh out loud. When two female wrestlers came out to drink water, he came out and told them that nothing should happen to Brij Bhushan. Go and do your practice."

"He told another female wrestler in a very lewd manner that such&nbsp;incidents happen, don't make it such a big issue. Let me know if you need anything. After the committee meeting, Yogeshwar leaked the names of women wrestlers to Brij Bhushan and the media. He also called the houses of many women wrestlers and told them to make their girls understand. He was already publicly giving statements against women wrestlers, yet he was kept in both committees."

"He constantly prevented wrestlers and coaches from joining the movement of women wrestlers. The whole wrestling world understood that Yogeshwar was in cahoots with Brij Bhushan,"&nbsp;Vinesh Phogat said.

"If anyone raises their voice against injustice in the society, then Yogeshwar definitely vomits. Earlier, he made derogatory comments about farmers, jawans, students, Muslims, and Sikhs, and now is engaged in defaming women wrestlers. Because of betraying society, you (Yogeshwar) have lost twice in the elections. And I challenge that you will never win an election in your life, because society is always careful of poisonous snakes.

"Wrestling world will always remember you for licking the boot of Brij Bhushan. Don't use so much force to break women wrestlers, they have very strong intentions. You are very insensitive person. Standing in favour of the oppressor, you are flattering him."

Wrestlers protest: Vinesh Phogat hits back at fellow Olympian Yogeshwar Dutt as situation turns ugly

India women's hockey team is set to face Australia in a three-match series, in Adelaide, which kicks off on May 18. The Savita Punia-led Women in Blue will take on the Aussies in three games, on May 18, 20, and 21 followed by two against&nbsp;Australia 'A' on May 25 and May 27. Mate Stadium in Adelaide will host all the games, which will be crucial to India's preparations for the&nbsp;Hangzhou Asian Games 2023.

After their historic fourth-place finish in the Tokyo Olympics, the Indian women's team could not do anything significant in last year's Hockey World Cup. In the mega event, held in the Netherlands, India finished in the ninth spot with a solitary win, three draws and two defeats. Ahead of their tour Down Under, Indian striker Vandana Katariya --&nbsp;who has more than 250 International Caps -- will spearhead India's forward line in Australia. Ahead of the tour opener, Wion's Aditya Sahay spoke exclusively with Vandana on Team India's preparations, how to deal with pressure, learnings from the World Cup campaign and more.

How are the girls preparing for the Australia tour to tackle the different conditions and an experienced Aussie side?

We are preparing really well. Our&nbsp;sessions -- hard, red and green -- have been well planned.&nbsp; We are treating them as competition days. The tour of Australia is really important ahead of this year's Asian Games. We are practising with regard to exactly what we plan to do in Australia.

Learning from WC campaign and how to deal with big-stage pressure?

We ended ninth in the Women's World Cup last year. We ended with a lot of drawn encounters. There is always pressure but we have to ensure we do not get bogged down by it. There will always be pressure at the highest level. We have to use it in a good way. We need to be positive. We also need to learn from our experiences and mistakes, take some time when the going gets tough, and try to be in a calm state&nbsp;to perform better. Whatever mistakes we made in the World Cup, we need to rectify them during the Australian tour.&nbsp;

Vandana has always excelled at the big stage. She was among the goal-scorers&nbsp;in last year's WC. In addition, she became India's first woman with an Olympic hat-trick during Tokyo 2020. Thus, she surely knows how to deliver in mega-events.

How important is it to understand when to defend, and when to attack?

We need to always be on the move. We need to have more control of the ball and maintain lead in most times. We have improved on double transfer, counter control, etc. Every player is eager to improve in all aspects. We have a lot of speed and agility in our team so we need to make the most of our squad going forward. Whether we defend or attack, we do it collectively and need to keep repeating the same basics we need to tick.&nbsp;

Any message for youngsters and aspiring players?

I just want to say that first, we need to be comfortable with the team, be it a youngster or a senior. We need to gel first and build confidence as a side. If we are on the attack, we should not waste it and ensure we convert it into a goal. These are some aspects we have improved upon and we can continue to reap benefits out of it.
