Former England pacer Steve Harmison made headlines following his latest remarks on ex-captains Naseer Hussain and Michael Atherton by calling them selfish characters. Talking on SEN Radio, Harmison, in response to Jason Gillespie’s comments on how England played as a unit in the 2005 Ashes – something, as an Australian he had never seen before, Harmison took jibes at those two stalwarts.

Though for countless reasons, the 2005&nbsp;Ashes remain the greatest modern-day Test series to date, Harmison said had it not been about playing for them and instead for the country, England would have tasted success earlier as well.

Meanwhile, not only Hussain and Atherton,&nbsp;the two top-order batters, who attained tremendous success in their career, Harmison also mentioned a few names, citing that since they didn't play for the team, England's Test side had to bear the brunt for those results.

Gillespie’s assessment of England’s culture during the early 2000s and how it suddenly changed during the 2005&nbsp;Ashes stated, “I noticed a big difference in the England side in the 2005 Ashes… we’d never felt that as an Australian side before,” Gillespie told ‘Sen Radio’ on Thursday,

“England would normally go out in dribs or drabs going onto the field… (but this time) it was really noticeable that as soon as the umpires walked out there, (England skipper) Michael Vaughan was straight out there, everyone was straight out there, quick chat and then they would literally run to their fielding positions, the bowler would run and hand his cap to the umpire and before our batters were halfway onto the ground, the whole England team was set up ready to play, ready to rock,” the former Aussie seamer added.

Harmison, who played 44 Tests and was a core member of the bowling unit from 2000 to at least until the 2005 Ashes, revealed, “We’d grown up as a team, we played as a team and we behaved off the field like a team (in 2005). In 1997, 2001, 2003/04, you had a lot of selfish characters playing for England.”&nbsp;

Specifically mentioning those names, Harmison said, “Some great cricketers, don’t get me wrong… but when you look at — and I’ve got no problem saying this — the likes of Nasser (Hussain), Athers (Michael Atherton), Thorpey (Graham Thorpe), Corkey (Dominic Cork), Darren Gough, Andy Caddick, there was a group of individuals playing altogether as a team where you look at 2005, we were a team.”

Talking about the Australian team that since the mid-90s took the world by storm, and despite them having differences as well, they never let the opposition get onto them, Harmison told Gillespie,&nbsp;

“Looking at (the Australian team), your boys were a team. You might have had some differences, but we never picked up once (on any of them),” Harmison added.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Ashes are about to begin in the UK, with the first Test scheduled to start on June 16&nbsp;in Edgbaston.

England Test team captain Ben Stokes is optimistic about his bowling chances as he prepares for a busy English summer where his side takes on Australia in the Ashes. Stokes, who returned at the midway point of the Indian Premier League (IPL) season playing for Chennai Super Kings (CSK), is suffering from a knee issue and is optimistic about his bowling chances. According to Stokes, he has given himself the best possible chance&nbsp;to bowl when England take on Australia in the Ashes, starting on June 16.

<h2>Stokes to bowl?</h2>

"The knee is in a much better place than it was in Wellington," Stokes told reporters ahead of Ireland Test.

"I've been over in India for the IPL and these last eight or nine weeks I know I have got myself in a position where I can't say I regret anything.

"I have got myself into a place where I feel like in a 2019, 2020 space in terms of my own body and fitness. I have definitely given myself the best opportunity (to bowl this summer).

"We know what it is (the problem) and now it is about managing it,” the all-rounder added.

The 2019 ODI World Cup winner will lead his side against neighbours Ireland in the only Test starting on Thursday at the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground. He will be determined to start the new season on a high and continue his unbeaten streak as the captain of the Test side. Stokes is yet to lose a series as the captain of England and has formed a brilliant combination with coach Brendon McCullum, termed as ‘Bazball’ by the English media.

Stokes also reflected on his love for Ashes, where he has incredible memories of having led England to a memorable win against the Aussies in 2019 at Headingley. The Ashes ended all square at 2-2 when the Aussies were last in England.

The five-match Ashes series will conclude on July 27 when the final Test starts at the Kennington Oval in London.

The selection committee announced the squad for the WTC final and the first two Ashes matches on Wednesday, April 19 and have kept faith in Josh Hazlewood while Lance Morris missed out with David Warner also returning to the fold.&nbsp;

"He's having a bit of a de-load period, which I think is about four-to-six weeks, and then he will start to start to build after that," chief selector George Bailey said.

"Conservatively, we'll probably look to rebuild Lance and hopefully have a really big crack at the summer.

The squad for the WTC final also sees the return of David Warner in the squad while the selection committee hopes for a positive outcome of scans for players who missed out due to fitness issues. The selection committee will announce the squad for the remainder of the three Ashes Tests in June and will hope for Morris’ return to the team.

"He'll get another scan in four-to-six weeks and we'll get a better indication of how that back's going."

The Aussies have traditionally kept a backup option on long tours like England and India and will have the luxury to call some of their prime bowling assets already present in England. The likes of Michael Neser and Sean Abbott are already getting used to English conditions and could be called into action if needed for the Ashes.

"I think the cricket we're playing at the moment makes it such an exciting time to play them. We've been dominating teams in all conditions for 12 months now. In England we dominated, in Pakistan we dominated and in New Zealand, we played most of the cricket for nine days and lost on the last day because we probably weren't quite there. But I think the way we're playing cricket, we feel like we can really stick one on them and win the series comfortably, Robinson added. &nbsp;

The latest edition of the Ashes will start on June 16 and will follow immediately after the World Test Championship final against India. The first contest will take place at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The former banned Aussie opener had a stupendous Shield season, where he scored 945 runs in 20 innings at an average of 59.06, including four centuries&nbsp;and one fifty. With the 2023 Ashes looming and considering David Warner’s poor recent run and a poorer record in England, Bancroft has pressed his case for a return to international cricket after four years.

WA’s&nbsp;legend and current coach Adam Voges heaped praises on the 30-year-old batter, saying he was leading to this point and had the right build-up going his way.&nbsp; 
"Cameron's been building to a season like this for a little while now," WA coach Adam Voges said. "Technically, I think he's in a much better space than he has been previously."

Voges also said that Bancroft polished his skills and can grind for longer hours at the crease now. He added Bancroft is more technically sound and is aware of his strengths.

"He's always had those really remarkable powers of concentration and ability to bat for long periods and now that he's technically in a better place, I think that just allows him to be able to draw on that strength," Voges said.

As Bancroft will head to the English County to play four matches for Somerset, he will further improve his chances of breaking into the Australian team for the away Ashes later this year.

"The focus shifts pretty quickly from this onto that [county cricket]. The dreams and aspirations of playing higher are always there, and I'm sure they are for all cricketers but I just tried to finish this season off really well and then move on to the next lot of cricket I'm playing," Cameron Bancroft said.

As things stand, Australia have three openers fighting for the top two spot – Usman Khawaja, David Warner and Travis Head. Following the India series, where in absence of injured Warner, who returned home after the end of the second Test, make-shift opener Head impressed all alongside Khawaja, who further made headlines for his incredible outing after early failures.

"The outliers are obviously the 150 kmph bowlers. It's exciting if we can have Jofra and Wood available. Whether you play them together is another thing, but I think you need that pace against the Australians," he said.

"Playing in English conditions I think it puts their bowling group in front of the Australians, without a doubt. It'll come down to whatever team can bat the best really, I think both sides know that."

Warner's superb show at the G also helped Australia beat the Proteas by an innings and 182 runs - and sealed the three-match Test series 2-0.

While addressing the media following the second Test, the opener said he is in a happy place, and that he doesn't feel 36 at all.

"I wish you would stop telling me my age. I don't feel 36," Warner said. "I'm running faster than a lot of these youngsters in (the dressing room). So when they catch up to me then I might think about pulling the pin.

It's different with the venues, Nagpur and Delhi quite dry, then Dharamsala that time of the year, we've played there, and we probably should have won that Test, but we lost that ourselves. There's going to be times when it's going to be challenging over there, but it's about how our batters can build and bat big as we did in Pakistan," Warner said.&nbsp;
