An iceberg that has been on a journey for 40 years, drifting away in the cold waters, getting stuck, freeing itself and then threatening an entire island as it reached its end time. Latest images of A23a, formerly the world's largest iceberg, show that it has turned into a blob of "blue mush" with stripes on it, signalling that it will soon vanish. The iceberg broke off from Antarctica's Filchner-Ronne Ice Sheet in the summer of 1986. It was three times larger than New York City, and was dubbed the "queen of icebergs." But now, it is on the verge of disappearing forever as it travels through the warmer waters of the Atlantic Ocean. After A23a started floating freely in 1986, it got stuck on the ocean floor and remained there till 2020. After breaking free, it once again set out on an unknown trip and kept moving farther away from Antarctica. However, it got caught in a massive ocean current, or gyre, and kept spinning in one place before finally breaking free in December 2024.&nbsp;In 2025, it threatened to crash into the island of South Georgia. Thankfully, it broke apart before it could reach the island. As it moved towards South America, the warmer Atlantic waters have led to it melting away. NASA's Terra satellite captured new images of iceberg A23a on December 26, looking nothing like its former self. The startling images show that it is only around a third of its original size and is covered with pools of blue water. Thick borders of white ice, dubbed "ramparts", surround the waters around the iceberg. A pool of grey sludge, known as ice melange, seems to have leaked from under the iceberg and can be seen in the images. Hundreds of smaller bergs have broken off its edges and can be seen in the waters.Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/major-catastrophe-unfolding-in-antarctica-as-hundreds-of-earthquakes-slam-doomsday-glacier-1767680441864">Major catastrophe unfolding in Antarctica as hundreds of earthquakes slam Doomsday Glacier</a> Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/doomsday-gets-closer-cracks-on-thwaites-glacier-have-doubled-in-two-decades-1766981007538">Doomsday gets closer: Cracks on Thwaites Glacier have doubled in two decades</a><h2>What is blue mush seen on A23a iceberg?</h2>The "blue mush" is evidence that the iceberg is nearing its death. A historic ice vault has been inaugurated in Antarctica, creating the world’s first long-term ice core library designed to preserve samples from glaciers that are rapidly melting due to climate change. Scientists say the vault will store ice cores collected from around the world, allowing future researchers to study Earth’s climate. The project is being described as a global scientific archive aimed at protecting vital climate data for generations to come.

The Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica has been jolted by hundreds of glacial earthquakes over nearly 13 years, according to new research. Also known as the Doomsday Glacier, it is so large that a complete collapse could lead global sea levels to rise by 10 feet. The latest study has found something even more shocking. Researchers say that previous analysis on the stability of Thwaites could be wrong. According to Thanh-Son Pham, a researcher at the Australian National University, it is a lot less stable and has been hit by hundreds of iceberg earthquakes between 2010 and 2023, Gizmodo reported. Thanh-Son Pham says that most of these earthquakes weren't detected because of low-frequency seismic waves.&nbsp;&nbsp;According to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, a total of 362 glacial earthquakes have struck Antarctica for more than a decade, of which 245 took place in Doomsday Glacier. The Thwaites has already been flagged as a danger for the world's coasts, as the increasing temperatures are fast melting this giant, free-floating body of ice. Add to it the scenario of earthquakes shaking it further, and we have a perfect recipe for disaster waiting to happen.Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/doomsday-gets-closer-cracks-on-thwaites-glacier-have-doubled-in-two-decades-1766981007538">Doomsday gets closer: Cracks on Thwaites Glacier have doubled in two decades</a> Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/a-robot-got-lost-in-antarctica-it-revealed-scary-secrets-from-underneath-another-glacier-1766997802759">A robot got lost in Antarctica. Scientists have gotten a look at an area of Antarctica that has been hard to reach, even with the best technology. It wasn't done intentionally, but a robot thought lost to time resurfaced and revealed secrets about the underbelly of the Denman Glacier. This ocean robot was sent to collect data from the Totten Glacier, but it ended up under the Denman Glacier. The findings published in ScienceAdvances journal in December 2025 mention that this robot was a free-floating device, and a pull by a current led it astray from its destination. With features like salinity and temperature sensors, it was meant to go below the water and surface once every 10 days to transmit data to satellites. This is a common method to study the impact of climate change on the glaciers.&nbsp;The Australian national science agency CSIRO intended for this robot to do the same for the Totten Glacier. The primary purpose was to know by how much the sea levels could rise if this particular one in Antarctica melted. But it was navigationally lost instead and never surfaced again. However, it proved to be a blessing in disguise as it gathered data from the Denman Glacier. Nine months later, the robot resurfaced with plenty of data on this ice body and the impact of climate change on Antarctica.Also Red: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/doomsday-gets-closer-cracks-on-thwaites-glacier-have-doubled-in-two-decades-1766981007538">Doomsday gets closer: Cracks on Thwaites Glacier have doubled in two decades</a>&nbsp;<h2>The robot showed how East Antarctica could be affected&nbsp;</h2>It got trapped beneath the Denman Glacier and the Shackleton ice shelf. Cracks continue to form around a shear zone of the Thwaites Glacier, also known as the Doomsday Glacier, as observed by satellites between 2002 and 2022. A team of researchers from the University of Manitoba wrote in a paper, "Over the past two decades, the shelf has experienced progressive fracturing around a prominent shear zone upstream of its pinning point, gradually compromising its structural integrity." They noted that the “total area length of fractures” grew from around 100 miles to over 200 miles in two decades. There are also hints that major new stresses are acting on the glacier since the average length did not actually increase.&nbsp;Another study published by the International Thwaites Glacier Collaboration (ITGC) also confirmed that the large cracks in the ice shelf continue to weaken its structural integrity. The Thwaites Glacier is also called the Doomsday Glacier because it is at risk of imminent collapse, and when that happens, the sea levels could rise by 11 feet. Thwaites Glacier is often referred to as the "weak underbelly" of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet because the damage to it cannot be reversed, and it will collapse even under little stress. The Thwaites Ice Shelf holds the eastern portion of Thwaites Glacier and is expected to collapse by 2032. Once this shelf goes, the outflow from the glacier will speed up, leading to a complete breakdown.Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/scientists-reveal-antarctic-ice-sheet-witnessed-a-catastrophe-9-000-years-ago-it-was-hotter-1766667493987">Scientists reveal Antarctic ice sheet witnessed a catastrophe 9,000 years ago - It was hotter</a><h2>Warming oceans are melting glaciers faster</h2>Thwaites is not the only glacier that could ultimately crash down, triggering a rise in sea levels. A recent study highlighted how warming ocean waters are melting ice shelves, and the changes are so clear that they can be noticed in mere hours and days. The warm, salty current flows hundreds of feet below the surface and moves upwards and onto the continental shelf. A positive feedback loop is created where new cold water from the ice shelf mixes with warmer, saltier ocean waters. The resultant ocean turbulence causes even more ice to melt.&nbsp;

The Thwaites Glacier, or the Doomsday Glacier, is showing more signs of damage and is inching closer to its end. New studies have noticed that the cracks have spread to a larger area, and scientists think more stressors are at play.

The West Antarctica ice sheet is at risk of collapse owing to climate change. Now, a study has revealed that the East Antarctica ice sheet completely collapsed 9,000 years ago because of the warming ocean water. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet is a vast body of land ice in East Antarctica. Researchers found evidence in seafloor sediments near Japan’s Syowa Station that proves that the collapse happened because of warm deep ocean currents. The study was led by Professor Yusuke Suganuma of the National Institute of Polar Research (NiPR). Scientists have warned in the past that if Antarctic ice melts, global water levels will rise by several feet.&nbsp;To understand future sea level changes, Suganuma set out on a quest to learn how the Antarctic ice sheets responded to a warming climate in the past. His team took sediment cores from Lutzow-Holm Bay’s seafloor. The layers of sediment showed proof of changes during an extremely hot period on Earth when temperatures were higher than they are today. This period was known as the early Holocene, a time span that started after the last ice age.Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/scientists-alarmed-at-noticing-a-scary-feeding-trait-in-the-only-antarctic-bug-1765445210475">Scientists alarmed at noticing a scary feeding trait in the only Antarctic bug</a>&nbsp;Rare beryllium isotopes and tiny marine fossils were measured to reveal the timing of this collapse. All the data suggested that the East Antarctic ice sheet broke up 9,000 years ago. The culprit was the circumpolar deep water, a warm, salty current that flows hundreds of feet below the surface. This water moved upwards and onto the continental shelf, cutting away the ice shelves. The fracture in these shelves left the ice with no structural support, causing the inland ice to flow faster towards the ocean.<h2>Ice sheet collapse was rapid</h2>The researchers noted that the ice and ocean formed a positive feedback loop. The surface ocean turned fresh from the meltwater from the Antarctic regions. The warm deep water moved towards the land, creating a "cascading positive feedback". Lighter water moved above the heavier water; hence, the cooler surface water did not mix with the downward water. The collapse occurred rapidly owing to several factors, such as the rising sea level and the shape of the seafloor.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Scientists have discovered that the Antarctic ice sheet witnessed a rapid collapse thousands of years ago. This was also because of the warming climate. The warm ocean water triggered an effect that led to the massive East Antarctic ice sheet falling apart.

Microplastics have invaded the world and have reached even the remotest corners. Antarctica is no exception. Scientists have now made an even more worrying discovery, finding microplastics inside the only bug that lives on the frozen continent. Belgica antarctica is a small fly, only about the size of rice. It lives inside moss and algae and feeds on dead plant materials, and recycles nutrients present in the Antarctic soil. A study published in Science of the Total Environment has revealed the presence of microplastics inside these tiny creatures. The discovery brings forth a startling situation showing the increasing levels of pollution in Antarctica.&nbsp;Jack Devlin, study lead author and an entomologist at the University of Kentucky, said in a statement, "Antarctica still has much lower plastic levels than most of the planet, and that’s good news. But we can now say they are getting into the system, and at high enough levels they start to change the insect’s energy balance.” Research ships and missions have been found responsible for leeching plastics into Antarctic ice, according to earlier findings. Plastic fragments have been detected in Antarctic snow and seawater. Since the bugs, or midges, live by breaking down things in the soil, researchers wanted to see if microplastics would make their way into their system.&nbsp;<h2>Midges can fight extreme conditions in Antarctica</h2>Midges are extremely tough, since they withstand extreme cold, high salt, huge temperature changes and UV radiation. But could they fight a new stress like microplastics, Devlin questioned, "or does it make them vulnerable to something they’ve never seen before?" To understand this, the researchers exposed the midges to different amounts of microplastics for 10 days in a lab. The insects’ metabolism did not change, and “they seemed to be doing fine,” Devlin said. They also noted that the only time the midges fed on microplastics was when the microplastic beads was at the highest concentration levels.&nbsp;They then collected midge larvae from 20 sites on 13 islands in Antarctica. Their gut was checked for plastic, and of the 40 larvae, the team found only two microplastic fragments. Devlin admits that "microplastics are not flooding these soil communities" at the moment. However, this is an "early warning" that the pollutant is slowly spreading in Antarctica.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Antarctica has a bug that is also known as the midge, which is now eating microplastics. Scientists have found only a tiny bit in this tiny insect, but say it is a warning sign for the future and the conditions in the frozen continent.

Earth narrowly missed an asteroid on October 1 as a huge space rock skimmed past us at a distance of 482 kilometres. The bigger worry is that scientists only saw it after it had already flown by, raising questions about humanity's preparations for planetary defence. Asteroid 2025 TF flew over Antarctica in the early hours of October 1. The 9.8-foot space rock was even closer than the International Space Station (ISS) is to Earth, too close for comfort. The asteroid was detected by the Catalina Sky Survey a few hours after it had already zoomed past our planet. While the delayed detection could be a cause for concern, experts say the asteroid wasn't hazardous. The European Space Agency (ESA) said that a rock of this size would have burned up in the atmosphere even if it crashed into Earth, leaving tiny chunks of meteorites. Asteroid 2025 TF flew over Antarctica on October 1 at a distance of 482 kilometres. None of the space agencies knew that it was coming and would make such a close flyby. What would have happened if the asteroid had collided with Earth?

"They can produce fireballs if they strike Earth’s atmosphere, and may result in the discovery of small meteorites on the ground," the space agency said. India sent a heavy-duty Russian cargo plane on October 2 to Antarctica to record atmospheric and climate changes in Antarctica. The cargo plane was sent with large scientific instruments and equipment for research. The mission was facilitated by an IL-76 operated by Dronning Maud Land Air Network (DROMLAN), carrying 18 tons of gear, medicines, provisions, and essentials for Indian researchers operating at the research bases, Bharati and Maitri.&nbsp;According to a report in the Indian Express, this specialised cargo plane, deployed by the military, including the Indian Army, was rerouted via the Manohar International Airport located in Mopa of Goa. The cargo plane will fly to its destination in the southern hemisphere over the next few days en route to South Africa’s Cape Town.&nbsp;India has been conducting scientific research in Antarctica since 1981. Throughout these years, both research teams and equipment have been sent to Antarctica via ships, often operated by other countries. Since the scientific equipment and gear used for scientific experiments are of a high-end and specialised nature compared to regular cargo shipments, the sea route was selected to keep in mind the operational cost and load-carrying capacity.&nbsp;However, the volatile geopolitical situation in recent times, delays in obtaining permissions and shipment approvals, and unreliable sea freight services were among the major concerns for the Goa-based National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the nodal agency responsible for organising India’s scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic.&nbsp;“Post the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent disruption in the supply chain, our scientific shipments to Antarctica were facing unacceptable delays. As a result, researchers would be forced to wait for their shipments to arrive, thus defeating the whole purpose of the mission. Two of our latest missions to Antarctica experienced a delay in shipment deliveries,” Thamban Meloth, director, NCPOR, told The Indian Express.<h3>Why has India never sent its shipments via air in past?</h3>When Meloth was questioned about why India never considered sending its shipments via air, he replied, “The need was felt due to the supply-chain problem and the delays in shipment deliveries. Also, air cargo is an expensive affair, needs planning and co-ordination as the cargo plane from Russia requires to be re-routed via India. That is why we may not opt for air cargo service every year.”&nbsp;He noted that, similar to specialised shipment, landing on the icy and frozen Antarctica terrain is challenging, with only specific aircraft types designed to operate and land safely on its specially designed runways. For instance, IL-76 is particularly suited for the continent's blue-ice runways due to its special low-pressure tyres and specialised landing capabilities.&nbsp;“The 3km-long runway is built and operated during October – early March, when it is winter time in Antarctica. It is the highly trained pilots, like test pilots, who are designated to operate these flights,” the NCPOR director noted.&nbsp;The first Antarctic research station of India, known as Dakshin Gangotri, was built in 1983 and operated for a few years. Later, the second research station, Maitri, was established in 1989 in the Schimacher oasis region located in north Antarctica with the capability of accommodating about 25 crew members. Recently, Bharati, the third research station, positioned at about 3,000km east of Maitri, became operational in 2012, which supports 47 crew members at a time.

Scientists have issued a dire warning about the West Antarctic Ice Sheet that is on the verge of collapsing. According to a study, the ice mass that covers around 760,000 square miles of area is weakening, and if it completely melts, the sea levels could rise to such catastrophic levels that several cities across the world will fully submerge. Researchers from the Australian National University warned that the carbon dioxide (CO2) levels will spell doom for many coastal areas. Their analysis shows that when the ice sheet collapses, sea levels could rise by more than 9.8ft. Dr Nerilie Abram, the lead author of the study, said, "Rapid change has already been detected across Antarctica's ice, oceans and ecosystems, and this is set to worsen with every fraction of a degree of global warming." The destruction would be so massive, that it would affect several generations to come. This led to chilling findings that could prove catastrophic for the world. Besides the direct effects, a gamut of "knock–on effects" would be felt, "including making the floating ice shelves around Antarctica more susceptible to wave–driven collapse," Dr Abram said. "The decline in Antarctic sea ice and the slowdown of deep circulation in the Southern Ocean are showing worrying signs of being more susceptible to a warming climate than previously thought," he said, raising concern that a grave scenario could be unfolding. The changes in the amount of solar heat being retained in the climate system will make the Antarctic region even warmer, according to the study. Artificial Intelligence has reached such levels where it is getting harder and harder to distinguish between what's real and what's fake. Thankfully, sometimes our intelligence and basic principles learned in school come to the rescue. An Instagram page has been posting content supposedly showing "the edge of the world." The videos show a remote place, somewhere claiming to be in Antarctica, with the point where land ends and space begins. They can be seen throwing things over the ledge to see what happens. In one video, a man shows off a base camp with several tents pitched in the snow. He shows another man setting up the tent, and then a table with food and drinks. "Careful, it's a long fall, like forever. Greg calls this porch sitting, I call it fall and die. The view is killer, though," he says. The makers are pushing the claim that they have reached a point on Earth no one was supposed to see, the "governments and concerned authorities wanted to keep hidden from the world.&nbsp;Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-welcome-to-new-world-of-misinformation-google-veo-3-s-realistic-videos-of-ai-reporters-make-internet-uncomfortable-1747982803187">'Welcome to new world of misinformation': Google Veo 3's realistic videos of AI reporters make internet uncomfortable</a><h2>‘NASA has noticed us…’</h2>The videos on this handle are clearly generated using AI, thus showing how the advanced tools have opened up an entire world of conspiracy theories and fake content. Google Veo 3 is one such tool that has been in the news lately for creating extremely realistic videos. In one video on the Instagram handle called deep.seavisitor, a man can be seen dressed fully covered in warm clothes and gear, holding a flare while a helicopter flies behind him into "space". He says, "We are standing on the edge of the end of the world. NASA has noticed us. May be I wasn't supposed to record this." In another clip, the man says, "We have been riding for seven days, we have covered 1,200 miles and we still haven't found the end."Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/ai-video-of-women-google-veo-3-1748497674146">'It's over for humanity': 'Creepy' video of two women is hiding something sinister</a><h2>Instagram page with hyper-realistic content whick is completely fake</h2>If you are unfamiliar with this page and come across one of the so-called Antarctica videos for the first time, it might leave your jaw dropping. However, as you scroll through more of them, it becomes clear quickly that whoever owns the page has been making skilful use of AI to generate unrealistic videos, some of them weird and some plain funny. One of the clips shows the team digging into the ice and discovering an "alien tomb" with a figure inside it. They pull out the "skeleton" and drag it through the ice on a sledge. Viewers commenting on the videos are completely aware that all the content is AI-generated. Yet, they still seem to be causing intrigue and excitement. This is why even actor Hrithik Roshan seems to have left a thumbs-up on one of their videos. A person commented, "AI, but still a great video," with another adding, "This would make for a great movie plot." Another comment read, "This is the best AI that I've seen so far."&nbsp;https://www.wionews.com/videos/open-ai-launches-chatgpt-5-gpt-being-integrated-into-microsoft-platforms-1754675043819/embed<h2>AI is being used to scam people</h2>Google says that with Veo 3, "you can create more immersive experiences by not only generating stunning visuals, but also audio like dialogue and sound effects." Several videos made with such tools are circulating on the internet, leaving people flabbergasted at the amount of realism. However, AI content always has some giveaways if looked at closely. People are calling on authorities to place regulations on AI as they fear it can cause massive side effects one day. They are also leading to scams and views and opinions that go against scientific principles. In Malaysia, an older couple watched a video of a tourist resort and travelled for kilometres to get there. They were shocked to the core when they were told that no such place exists in the area.

An Instagram handle known for its AI content is now posting footage of the “edge of the world” in Antarctica that opens right into space. The extremely real videos show a man talking into the camera about how governments wanted it to remain a secret

The makers are pushing the claim that they have reached a point on Earth no one was supposed to see, the "governments and concerned authorities wanted to keep hidden from the world. Also Read: 'Welcome to new world of misinformation': Google Veo 3's realistic videos of AI reporters make internet uncomfortable ‘NASA has noticed us…’ The videos on this handle are clearly generated using AI, thus showing how the advanced tools have opened up an entire world of conspiracy theories and fake content. May be I wasn't supposed to record this." In another clip, the man says, "We have been riding for seven days, we have covered 1,200 miles and we still haven't found the end." However, as you scroll through more of them, it becomes clear quickly that whoever owns the page has been making skilful use of AI to generate unrealistic videos, some of them weird and some plain funny. A person commented, "AI, but still a great video," with another adding, "This would make for a great movie plot." Another comment read, "This is the best AI that I've seen so far." https://www.wionews.com/videos/open-ai-launches-chatgpt-5-gpt-being-integrated-into-microsoft-platforms-1754675043819/embed AI is being used to scam people Google says that with Veo 3, "you can create more immersive experiences by not only generating stunning visuals, but also audio like dialogue and sound effects." Several videos made with such tools are circulating on the internet, leaving people flabbergasted at the amount of realism.

Antarctica has fallen! Bizarre theories about ice wall and alien tombs swirl on social media

Scientists have discovered carvings left by ancient rivers millions of years ago under the Antarctic Ice Sheet. As these rivers eroded, large, flat surfaces were formed beneath the ice in East Antarctica between 80 million and 34 million years ago. The research was published on July 11 in the journal Nature Geoscience. Experts are now trying to understand what led to the creation of these features under the ice, as this could help make more accurate predictions about future ice loss. Neil Ross, a geophysicist at Newcastle University in the UK, said in a statement, "We've long been intrigued and puzzled about fragments of evidence for 'flat' landscapes beneath the Antarctic ice sheets." The researchers added that this reveals "how these ancient surfaces formed, their role in determining the present-day flow of the ice, and their possible influence on how the East Antarctic Ice Sheet will evolve in a warming world."&nbsp;Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/trending/radio-signals-tear-through-earth-and-out-of-antarctic-ice-they-could-be-coming-from-edge-of-universe-1749887206535">Mysterious radio signals just tore through Antarctic ice. The East Antarctic Ice Sheet could also melt, triggering sea levels to rise by 160 feet. Scientists say that accurately predicting how much the ice sheet might melt in the coming years requires an understanding of past behaviour and the conditions at its base. Radar data from four previous surveys were used in the study to map the shape of the bedrock beneath the ice. "When we were examining the radar images of the sub-ice topography in this region, these remarkably flat surfaces started to pop out almost everywhere we looked," study co-author Guy Paxman, a polar geophysicist at Durham University in the UK, said in the statement. "The flat surfaces we have found have managed to survive relatively intact for over 30 million years, indicating that parts of the ice sheet have preserved rather than eroded the landscape." The troughs supposedly formed when meltwater dipped as the East Antarctic Ice Sheet expanded. Talking about the timing of the formation of the carvings, they are believed to have formed before the East Antarctic coastline existed, but some time after the supercontinent of Gondwana broke apart. This puts the timeline somewhere between 80 million and 34 million years ago. Ice also moves at different speeds in the two regions. Over the flat surfaces, it moves more slowly, while in the troughs between them, the ice flows much faster. Scientists say that retrieving rock samples from under the ice and analysing them will help with predictions about how much ice loss could occur in the future, triggering a rise in sea level.

Scientists have discovered evidence of ancient rivers in Antarctica that slowly eroded, leaving carvings and troughs that still exist. This could help understand how a mammoth ice sheet can one day collapse because of climate change.

Russia has discovered a major oil reserve in Antarctica, a finding that could change world dynamics. Newsweek reported that over the last few expeditions, an estimated 511 billion barrels of oil have been found in the frozen land by Russian researchers. This makes it one of the largest untapped oil reserves in the world. When compared to the oil reserves and output in other parts of the world, the Antarctic finding is around ten times greater than what has been extracted from the North Sea over the last 50 years. This oil is also nearly double Saudi Arabia’s known oil reserves. Russian research ships carrying out scientific expeditions in Antarctica claim to have uncovered this vast oil resource. However, in doing so, Russia is supposedly breaking international laws.<h2>Oil discovered in Antarctica</h2>The oil reserves were discovered in the Weddell Sea. This region lies in the "British part" of Antarctica and is part of its territorial interest in Antarctica. There are overlapping territorial claims by Argentina and Chile as well. Despite the competing claims, Russia has gone ahead and explored the region. This has led experts to doubt Russia's intentions. According to the 1959 Antarctic Treaty, Antarctica is only a zone for scientific research and no military activity or resource exploitation should be carried here. Several countries, like the US and UK, are signatories to it as the aim of the treaty is to prevent the exploitation of Antarctica's resources for economic gain. But Russia's so-called "scientific expeditions" could be breaking this treaty, as experts point out what it could be doing in the garb of science. A teenage pilot aiming to fly solo to all seven continents has been detained after he landed in a part of Antarctica he wasn't authorised to. American influencer Ethan Guo was taken in by Chilean authorities, who accused him of changing his plans and taking a detour without obtaining permission to land in Antarctica. Guo started the "flying solo" challenge in September last year. Chile says Guo landed in an Antarctic region where the country has a territorial claim. Prosecutors say he broke "multiple national and international regulations" when he took off after submitting a fake plan and then turning the plane towards Antarctica midway.&nbsp;Chile says that Guo submitted a flight plan that he didn't stick to. He took off from Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Airport in the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas as the sole passenger and crew member aboard a Cessna 182Q aircraft. The aircraft was registered as N182WT. However, he rerouted and turned the plane towards Antarctica. Meanwhile, his lawyer says that it wasn't intentional, and he did so after experiencing problems mid-air. Scientists have detected strange radio signals coming from below the ground in Antarctica. Scientists have discovered an ancient world buried deep within Antarctic ice. Sitting over a mile underneath the surface in East Antarctica is a land that existed more than 34 million years ago. 34-million-year-old world discovered buried deep inside Antarctic ice

Scientists have discovered that an ancient mountain range buried under ice in East Antarctica has not changed a bit in 500 million years. Known as the Gamburtsev Subglacial Mountains, they are hidden under a thick blanket of ice. Antarctica has some peaks, such as the Transantarctic Mountains, that pierce through. However, Gamburtsev is completely out of sight, The Conversation reported.
These mountains are similar to the European Alps, having the same scale and shape. But they are buried kilometres deep under the ice. Notably, the highest peak in the Alps is Mont Blanc at 15,778 feet, while 82 other peaks are higher than 13,000 feet. This shows how humongous the mountains buried in Antarctica really are.
Researchers who made the discovery state that the mountains were formed over 500 million years ago. Their study, published in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, states that the monstrous mountains were born at the time when the supercontinent Gondwana took shape from colliding tectonic plates.
All mountains are formed when two tectonic plates clash with each other. They change bit by bit over the years. Himalayas continue to rise even today after the process started 50 million years ago. However, Antarctica has been stable for millions of years. The authors also looked into the reason behind this phenomenon in the study.
The first time the mountains were discovered was by a Soviet expedition in 1958. Since then, scientists have struggled to learn more about it. What is puzzling is how such a huge mountain range came to be yet remains safe and hidden inside a continent.&nbsp;

<h2>Mountains formed when Gondwana took shape after collision between two continents</h2>
Studies suggest that the crust that forms East Antarctica is from two large continents that were divided by a vast ocean more than 700 million years ago. When these continents collided, the supercontinent of Gondwana was formed. This is also when the Gamburtsev mountain range was born.

"The collision triggered the flow of hot, partly molten rock deep beneath the mountains," the authors wrote. "As the mountains continued to take shape, the crust thickened and heated, before becoming unstable and collapsing under their own weight." Other forces led the mountains to partially collapse as well.
The researchers analysed tiny zircon grains deposited by rivers flowing from the ancient mountains more than 250 million years ago. This helped them learn the age of the mountains. They discovered that the Gamburtsev Mountains first rose around 650 million years ago. &nbsp;By 580 million years ago, they were equal in height to the Himalayas. Deep crustal melting and flow occurred, which ended around 500 million years ago.

Mammoth mountain range deep under Antarctica hides a 500-million-year-old secret

When a massive hole opened up in Antarctica's winter sea ice a few years back, NASA scientists could not believe what they were seeing. The gap stayed for several more months and swelled to the size of Switzerland a year later. The hole was located hundreds of miles from the shoreline above a submerged plateau named Maud Rise. Once the hole closed, scientists decided to study it and found that the 4,600‑foot‑tall seamount helped create it, also known as a polynya.
In the 1970s, when remote‑sensing satellites were first launched, they spotted a Maud Rise polynya. From 1974 to 1976, it became a regular feature, and scientists thought it would develop every year. But that did not happen. Then, to everybody's surprise, the hole in the Antarctic ice sheet made a reappearance in 2017.
The study was published in Science Advances.

They found that the Weddell Gyre, a gyre located in the Weddell Sea that rotates clockwise, started spinning at a faster rate. This brought a deep layer of warm, salty water nearer towards the surface and softened the ice from below.&nbsp;

&ldquo;This upwelling helps to explain how the sea ice might melt. But as sea ice melts, this leads to a freshening of the surface water, which should in turn put a stop to the mixing,&rdquo; Fabien Roquet, a Professor in Physical Oceanography at the University of Gothenburg and co-author of the research, stated.
So they were sure that something else was also going on, and "there must be an additional input of salt from somewhere." Extratropical storms played a part in the process as winds moved sea ice outward and briny water flowed towards Maud Rise. Atmospheric rivers added warmth from above. The final factor was a process called Ekman transport.
It states that when wind blows across the ocean, surface flow is deflected by roughly 90 degrees because of the Earth&rsquo;s rotation. The researchers created a model that showed the flow led to the salt‑laden water coming onto the exact place where the hole opened up in 2017 on Maud Rise.
The process of creating the hole was facilitated by the storms that moved the ice and pushed the right water into the right spot. The hole finally froze again in September.

World: The islands are entirely uninhabited and have no trade infrastructure. Later, Trump's inclusion of those islands sparked confusion and mockery on social media.

In Trump's wave of tariffwar, not just penguins, but the volcanoes of Australia's most remote territory were also targeted. Heard and McDonald Islands, two sub-Antarctic outposts located about 4,000 kilometres southwest of mainland Australia were included in Trump's "reciprocal tariffs", he announced on April 2. The two islands are entirely uninhabited and have no trade infrastructure. Later, Trump's inclusion of those islands sparked confusion and mockery on social media platforms. The discovery of fragments of an ancient continent deep beneath the surface of Antarctica has left scientists shocked. The data that revealed the continent has been collected from a gravity-mapping satellite that has been out of service since 2013. This is the European Space Agency's Gravity Field and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite.&nbsp;
The satellite was used to map out Earth&rsquo;s gravity field, and destroyed by the ESA four years later. Despite being out of service, it still has some invaluable data which scientists are using to map out the Earth&rsquo;s lithosphere, an outer section of the planet&rsquo;s internal geology.
The study was published in Scientific Reports.
&ldquo;These gravity images are revolutionizing our ability to study the least understood continent on Earth &mdash; Antarctica,&rdquo; study co-author Fausto Ferraccioli, science leader of geology and Geophysics at the British Antarctic Survey, said.
Due to vast swathes of ice sheet, it has been a trouble to study Antarctica's history and what lies under it. The latest data is now helping scientists learn the geological history of Antarctica and where it lay billions of years ago.

Something strange is going on at a research base in Antarctica where a team member has allegedly threatened to kill a colleague. With nowhere to run, others are scared too and are asking for help. The scientists are from South Africa and stationed at the Sanae IV research centre in Vesleskarvet, Queen Maud Land.&nbsp;
The base is run by the South African National Antarctic Program while the South African National Antarctic Expedition operates it. In a scary turn of events for the bunch trapped in a building, things are getting pretty dark, as per an email sent by one of them.
The weather is harsh in the region, with temperatures dropping to -23C and wind speeds of nearly 150mph. South Africa's closest point is 2,500 miles away. So the only human contact they have is with each other.

"I remain deeply concerned about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victim,&rdquo; the researcher added.
They are demanding urgent action for their safety, saying that the person's behaviour is turning "increasingly egregious".&nbsp;
<h2>Cabin fever in Antarctica?</h2>
Dion George, South Africa&rsquo;s environment minister, said that he would reach out to the team to understand the gravity of the situation. Talking to The Sunday Times, George said that the situation at the Antarctic base is similar to that of astronauts in space. They have nowhere to run or hide.
Detailing the incident, he said, "There was a verbal altercation between the team leader and this person. Then it escalated and then that person did physically assault the leader. You can imagine what it&rsquo;s like, it is close quarters and people do get cabin fever. It can be very disorientating."
<h2>What is cabin fever?</h2>
George mentioned cabin fever as a possible reason for the scientist's strange behaviour. Cabin fever is when people confined to one place for long periods of time start to experience psychological problems. The person might experience distress and irritability.

Antarctica is hiding mountains and canyons under its ice sheet, a new map of the landscape underneath has revealed. Assembled by a team of international scientists led by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), it is the most detailed map of a region that lies below the ice of Antarctica.
Bedmap3 has been created using survey data spanning a whopping six decades, all acquired not just by high-tech instruments like satellites, but also by dog-drawn sledges.
The map has been published in the journal Scientific Data.
What the map shows is Antarctica without its 27 million cubic km of ice, revealing the location of its tallest mountains and even some of its deepest canyons. The map of Antarctica also changes the previous belief of where the thickest overlying ice is on the continent. As per previous data, this site was Astrolabe Basin, in Ad&eacute;lie Land.&nbsp;

However, as per new calculations, the thickest overlying ice is in an unnamed canyon at 76.052&deg;S, 118.378&deg;E in Wilkes Land. The ice here is 4,757 metres thick, or to put it in context, more than 15 times the height of the Shard, the UK's tallest skyscraper.
Scientists say the new map will help them learn more about Antarctica and how it might change owing to a warming climate since the scientists can now study interactions between the ice sheet and the bed.
Dr. Hamish Pritchard, a glaciologist at BAS and lead author on the study says it is like "pouring syrup over a rock cake&mdash;all the lumps, all the bumps, will determine where the syrup goes and how fast."

He says, it is the same with Antarctica also, "some ridges will hold up the flowing ice; the hollows and smooth bits are where that ice could accelerate."
<h2>First Bedmap was made in 2001</h2>
This is the third such map of Antarctica, with the first one coming in 2001. Bedmap3 is more refined than the previous two maps as it includes more than double the number of previous data points (82 million), rendered on a 500 m grid spacing.
More information has been gathered about East Antarctica including around the South Pole, along the Antarctic Peninsula and West Antarctic coastlines, and in the Transantarctic Mountains. The map also shows a better view of the deep valleys and huge rocky mountains cutting through the ice.&nbsp;
<h2>More details map of Antarctica</h2>
It also offers a better view of the height and shape of the ice sheet and the thickness of the floating ice shelves. The places where ice at the edge of the continent meets the ocean and begins to float are also well represented.
Peter Fretwell, mapping specialist and co-author at BAS, says, "In general, it's become clear the Antarctic Ice Sheet is thicker than we originally realized and has a larger volume of ice that is grounded on a rock bed sitting below sea level."

Antarctica Ice Melt Could Trigger Volcanic Eruptions: Study

Cambridge, England
The biggest iceberg in the world, A23a, has started to drift in the Southern Ocean after breaking free. The iceberg weighs almost a trillion tonnes and is double the size of Greater London.
For more than 30 years, the iceberg has remained grounded on the seafloor and recently was seen spinning on the spot.
According to the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) experts, A23a has broken free from its position which was in the north of the South Orkney Islands.
The iceberg has embarked on a new journey and is floating in the Southern Ocean.

"It's exciting to see A23a on the move again after periods of being stuck," said Dr Andrew Meijers, who is an oceanographer with the BAS.
"We are interested to see if it will take the same route the other large icebergs that have calved off Antarctica have taken. And more importantly what impact this will have on the local ecosystem," he added.
<h2>Giant iceberg's journey so far</h2>
Originally, the iceberg had calved from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986.
The iceberg remained grounded in the Weddell Sea and started its slow journey north in 2020.
The iceberg got trapped in a Taylor Column in February this year. Taylor Column is a phenomenon in which the object in place gets trapped in rotating water above a seamount.
Because of this A23a kept spinning on the spot and its expected rapid drift north was delayed.
The images which were captured by satellites overhead have now confirmed that the iceberg has been freed and is moving.
Now, BAS experts are expecting that it will continue its journey towards the Southern Ocean after the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

The iceberg is likely to be driven towards the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia.
The region's warmer conditions can lead to the breaking up of A23a into smaller icebergs that will eventually melt. The iceberg is also being studied by researchers on board RRS Sir David Attenborough.
Biogeochemist on board the vessel Laura Taylor hoped that the impact of the iceberg on ecosystems would be studied by scientists.
"We know that these giant icebergs can provide nutrients to the waters they pass through, creating thriving ecosystems in otherwise less productive areas," Taylor said.
"What we don’t know is what difference particular icebergs, their scale, and their origins can make to that process. We took samples of ocean surface waters behind, immediately adjacent to, and ahead of the iceberg’s route. They should help us determine what life could form around A23a and how it impacts carbon in the ocean and its balance with the atmosphere," she added.

"We are interested to see if it will take the same route the other large icebergs that have calved off Antarctica have taken. And more importantly what impact this will have on the local ecosystem," he added. Giant iceberg's journey so far Originally, the iceberg had calved from the Filchner Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986. Watch: Climate Change Affects Butterfly Population The iceberg is likely to be driven towards the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia.
