It is the highly trained pilots, like test pilots, who are designated to operate these flights,” the NCPOR director noted.&nbsp;The first Antarctic research station of India, known as Dakshin Gangotri, was built in 1983 and operated for a few years. The cargo plane was sent with large scientific instruments and equipment for research. The mission was facilitated by an IL-76 operated by Dronning Maud Land Air Network (DROMLAN), carrying 18 tons of gear, medicines, provisions, and essentials for Indian researchers operating at the research bases, Bharati and Maitri. Throughout these years, both research teams and equipment have been sent to Antarctica via ships, often operated by other countries. Since the scientific equipment and gear used for scientific experiments are of a high-end and specialised nature compared to regular cargo shipments, the sea route was selected to keep in mind the operational cost and load-carrying capacity. However, the volatile geopolitical situation in recent times, delays in obtaining permissions and shipment approvals, and unreliable sea freight services were among the major concerns for the Goa-based National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the nodal agency responsible for organising India’s scientific expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic. “Post the Covid-19 pandemic and the subsequent disruption in the supply chain, our scientific shipments to Antarctica were facing unacceptable delays. As a result, researchers would be forced to wait for their shipments to arrive, thus defeating the whole purpose of the mission. Two of our latest missions to Antarctica experienced a delay in shipment deliveries,” Thamban Meloth, director, NCPOR, told The Indian Express. Why has India never sent its shipments via air in past? When Meloth was questioned about why India never considered sending its shipments via air, he replied, “The need was felt due to the supply-chain problem and the delays in shipment deliveries. Also, air cargo is an expensive affair, needs planning and co-ordination as the cargo plane from Russia requires to be re-routed via India. That is why we may not opt for air cargo service every year.” He noted that, similar to specialised shipment, landing on the icy and frozen Antarctica terrain is challenging, with only specific aircraft types designed to operate and land safely on its specially designed runways. For instance, IL-76 is particularly suited for the continent's blue-ice runways due to its special low-pressure tyres and specialised landing capabilities. “The 3km-long runway is built and operated during October – early March, when it is winter time in Antarctica. It is the highly trained pilots, like test pilots, who are designated to operate these flights,” the NCPOR director noted. The first Antarctic research station of India, known as Dakshin Gangotri, was built in 1983 and operated for a few years. Later, the second research station, Maitri, was established in 1989 in the Schimacher oasis region located in north Antarctica with the capability of accommodating about 25 crew members. Recently, Bharati, the third research station, positioned at about 3,000km east of Maitri, became operational in 2012, which supports 47 crew members at a time.

This is the European Space Agency's Gravity Field and Ocean Circulation Explorer (GOCE) satellite.&nbsp;
The satellite was used to map out Earth&rsquo;s gravity field, and destroyed by the ESA four years later. Despite being out of service, it still has some invaluable data which scientists are using to map out the Earth&rsquo;s lithosphere, an outer section of the planet&rsquo;s internal geology.
The study was published in Scientific Reports.
&ldquo;These gravity images are revolutionizing our ability to study the least understood continent on Earth &mdash; Antarctica,&rdquo; study co-author Fausto Ferraccioli, science leader of geology and Geophysics at the British Antarctic Survey, said.

The Sunday Times, which saw the email, quoted the email as saying, "Regrettably, [his] behaviour has escalated to a point that is deeply disturbing. Specifically, he physically assaulted [X]."
The unnamed researcher added that the actions have created "an environment of fear and intimidation" at the base.&nbsp;
"I remain deeply concerned about my own safety, constantly wondering if I might become the next victim,&rdquo; the researcher added.
They are demanding urgent action for their safety, saying that the person's behaviour is turning "increasingly egregious".&nbsp;

However, as per new calculations, the thickest overlying ice is in an unnamed canyon at 76.052&deg;S, 118.378&deg;E in Wilkes Land. The ice here is 4,757 metres thick, or to put it in context, more than 15 times the height of the Shard, the UK's tallest skyscraper.
Scientists say the new map will help them learn more about Antarctica and how it might change owing to a warming climate since the scientists can now study interactions between the ice sheet and the bed.
Dr. Hamish Pritchard, a glaciologist at BAS and lead author on the study says it is like "pouring syrup over a rock cake&mdash;all the lumps, all the bumps, will determine where the syrup goes and how fast."

This is the third such map of Antarctica, with the first one coming in 2001. Bedmap3 is more refined than the previous two maps as it includes more than double the number of previous data points (82 million), rendered on a 500 m grid spacing.
More information has been gathered about East Antarctica including around the South Pole, along the Antarctic Peninsula and West Antarctic coastlines, and in the Transantarctic Mountains. The map also shows a better view of the deep valleys and huge rocky mountains cutting through the ice.&nbsp;

Ghostly plumes of "sea smoke" have been seen rising from a glacier in Antarctica. NASA's Landsat 8 satellite captured the extraordinary atmospheric phenomenon above Antarctica's Pine Island Glacier.

The images were captured on October 10 and show two atmospheric phenomena - sea smoke forming at the glacier's edge and snow streams.

The near-surface atmospheric phenomena is normally not visible because of a cloud cover, Christopher Shuman, a glaciologist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center and the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, said in a statement.&nbsp;

Sea smoke is caused when ice, water and air interact. Shuman says the pictures show the power of winds, as when they push water and sea ice away from the glacier's front, warmer water comes up.
