Drone attack over airport in northwestern Russia: official

On Friday, there was a widespread loss of energy, which the electricity distribution company Kenya Power attributed to "a system disturbance."

Kenyan minister apologises after main airport hit with power outage

Kenya’s transport minister issued an apology on Saturday (August 26) after a widespread electricity blackout that left several regions in the country, including Nairobi international airport in darkness for several hours. The government official also assured that no passengers or aeroplanes were put in danger by the outage which took place on Friday night.

Major blackout across Kenya

As per reports, the power went off across several parts of the country at around 9:45 pm (local time) on Friday. The electricity distribution company, Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) released a statement and reported “a system disturbance” which led to a loss of bulk power supply to various parts of the country.

In addition to the capital, with a population of five million, the main cities affected in the East African nation included Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret, reported AFP.

As of midday on Saturday, the KPLC reported that the power had been restored to most of the regions. However, as per reports, several areas of the capital and Mombasa, the second-largest city, were still without electricity.

What happened at the airport?

A report by Reuters, citing online footage from local broadcaster NTV showed passengers at the airport huddling around the main terminal at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in darkness. Some used mobile phone torches to light their way on one of Africa’s busiest hubs.

Kenya Airport Authority (KAA) said a generator serving the main terminals had failed to restart after the outage while the generators that serve the flight control tower and the airport runway were functional at all times, said the country’s Transport Minister Kipchumba Murkomen.

“I’m really sorry for what has happened at the (JKIA) with the blackout,” said Murkomen, on X (formerly Twitter) in a rare public apology by a government official. He added, “There is no excuse worth reporting and there is no reason why our airport is in darkness.”

The KPLC also said that it restored supply to the airport five hours after the incident began, while many homes and businesses across Kenya were still without power more than 15 hours after the blackout began.

While blackouts are not uncommon in Kenya, it is rare for them to affect operations at the airport.

Kenyan minister issues ‘rare’ apology after blackout plunges main airport terminal into darkness

In an unfortunate incident, a pilot collapsed and died inside a toilet aboard a Boeing 787 flight bound for Chile from Miami, forcing the co-pilots to make an emergency landing in Panama, earlier this week.

The deceased pilot, identified as 56-year-old Ivan Andaur was chauffeuring the Santiago-bound LATAM Airlines flight around 11 pm on Sunday (August 13), a Chilean multinational airline, when he suffered a suspected cardiac arrest, according to a report in New York Post.

After receiving news that their colleagues was unwell, the two co-pilots took over the cockpit and emergency landed at the Tocumen International Airport in Panama City.

One of the co-pilots asked the passengers on the PA system if there were any doctors on the plane.

“They told us that we were going to land because the pilot felt sick and when we arrived, they asked us to evacuate the plane because the situation had worsened," said an unnamed passenger.

After the landing, two doctors and a nurse were rushed onboard to save the pilot but it was too late by then.

“Unfortunately, we did not have the necessary or sufficient supplies to perform a good resuscitation,” the nurse was quoted as saying.

“LATAM needs to improve the issue of protocol in case of health and medical emergencies like this where lives can be saved but the resources are needed," she added.

After the emergency landing, the passengers were shifted to hotels in Panama City and the flight resumed on Tuesday.

After the emergency landing, the passengers were shifted to hotels in Panama City and the flight resumed on Tuesday. Watch | Malaysian MH370 Missing: Was MH370 deliberately downed by Pilot? "Unfortunately, after landing and receiving further medical assistance, the pilot passed away. LATAM Group is deeply saddened by this event and takes this opportunity to express our most sincere condolences to the family of our employee," the airline told The Post. Notably, prior to operating on flights for LATAM, Andaur had flown in Chile's Air Force. He is survived by his daughter Sofia while his wife Veronica passed away in 2017. Tajik man kills two at Chisinau airport in Moldova

Showcasing a very unique talent, packing expert Chelsea Dickenson has been showing the world how it is possible to travel with many clothes and still avoid airline baggage allowance.

Even though this may sound impossible, Dickenson believes, “You can absolutely pack smaller than you think, I promise you, you can. “And I’m going to go out there and say that it will make your holiday better,” she tells CNN Travel.

33-year-old traveller Dickenson has been running the website Cheap Holiday Expert which provides tips and tricks for going on budget-friendly vacations. Dickenson, who is a frequent flyer, takes pride in travelling light. If she faces a shortage of space, Dickenson is an expert at coming up with unexpected solutions.

Fishing vest packing hack

Among many ways of travelling, Dickenson has a viral fishing vest packing hack in which she travels with a zip-up, multi-pocketed vest designed for fishing equipment. While boarding a recent EasyJet flight from London to Lisbon, the traveller wore the vest and filled its pockets with miscellaneous items which ranged from a bikini to a laptop.

ALSO READ | Dingo bites sunbathing tourist on Australian beach

“With the fishing vest – it’s a jacket. What do you do with your jackets? You put them in a tray. Do you take everything out of your pockets? No, you don’t. Not in a normal jacket – so why would you do it in a fishing vest? It’s completely the same,” said Dickenson, while stating that airport security staff are not concerned about baggage allowance, all they care about is that illegal items are not being transported by the travellers and too many liquids are not being carried by them.

Dickenson as well as her fishing vest also “sailed through” the gate. After boarding the plane, the expert took off the jacket and kept it in one of the overhead bins.

Packing hacks

Dickenson has shared several packing hacks with thousands of her followers on TikTok and Instagram and the fishing vest is just one of them. While boarding a flight from London to Vienna with Wizz Air, Dickenson removed the memory foam in her travel neck pillow and used the space to fill her seven pairs of underwear, five pairs of socks, a pair of leggings and two t-shirts.

Fishing vest packing hack Among many ways of travelling, Dickenson has a viral fishing vest packing hack in which she travels with a zip-up, multi-pocketed vest designed for fishing equipment. While boarding a recent EasyJet flight from London to Lisbon, the traveller wore the vest and filled its pockets with miscellaneous items which ranged from a bikini to a laptop. Packing hacks Dickenson has shared several packing hacks with thousands of her followers on TikTok and Instagram and the fishing vest is just one of them. While boarding a flight from London to Vienna with Wizz Air, Dickenson removed the memory foam in her travel neck pillow and used the space to fill her seven pairs of underwear, five pairs of socks, a pair of leggings and two t-shirts. In what comes as an unfortunate incident, a woman plummeted to her death at an Indonesian airport after forcing open the wrong set of doors of a lift and falling down the shaft. The incident was caught on CCTV cameras showing the last few minutes of the woman, identified as 38-year-old Aisiah Sinta Dewi. Dewi had gone to Kualanamu Airport in Medan, Northern Indonesia on April 24 to meet her niece at the check-in area. In the video footage, Dewi calmly walks into the double-sided cabin and pushed the button for the second floor before looking at her phone. Unaware that the lift opened on the other side as well, a confused Dewi started pressing the emergency buttons frantically and called her niece about the distressing situation. She later started to pry open the door and somehow managed to successfully do it. However, unfortunately, without looking down, she stepped out and plunged down the gap into the lift shaft.
Chaos erupted at the Philippines’ main gateway, on New Year's Day (Sunday) after it faced a severe power outage, paralysing the country’s air traffic control and disrupting over 300 flights, as of Monday. In a statement, Manila's Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) acknowledged that the incident affected tens of thousands of passengers and they are working to resume full services.

By Sunday afternoon, airport authorities said the air traffic management system had been partially restored allowing limited flight operations. The NAIA serves as the main gateway for travellers to and from the country and is in the capital city Manila.

According to Cesar Chiong, general manager of the international airport, it was the failure of primary and secondary power supplies that caused the outage and may take at least 72 hours to resume operations completely. The facility in question had introduced its own power system five years ago, however, during Sunday’s outage, both the main and backup systems failed.

Notably, the NAIA does not have the best reputation as it is ranked among the world’s worst international gateways which has been attributed to its flight backlogs and outdated systems.
Meanwhile, the incident also prompted Philippine authorities to shut down the country’s airspace. As of Monday, 361 flights were delayed, cancelled or diverted which has affected nearly 65,000 passengers, however, the number does not account for people on other flights which were rerouted to the shut Philippine airspace, reported Reuters.

In a press conference, on Sunday, Philippine Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista apologised for the incident and inconvenience caused to the passengers attributing it to a severe power outage affecting the airport's central air traffic control system.
