Goa brings up images of long expanses of beaches filled with frolicking tourists. To fulfil the demands of the flood of visitors, India has taken a step forward. The sole airport in the state till now was Dabolim Airport, located near the Goan village of Dabolim. On Sunday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi opened the first phase of a new international airport at Mopa in north Goa, which brought about a shift. The new airport, Manohar Parrikar International Airport, is named in honour of the late Goa Chief Minister who passed away in March 2019.

While inaugurating the airport, Modi said that the state-of-the-art airport in Mopa will significantly improve connectivity as well as boost tourism in Goa. Manohar Parrikar International Airport is proof of the changed government thinking and approach towards infrastructure in the country today, he said. Modi added that India took this initiative to take air travel to the smallest cities in the country.

Tourism Push

The airport in Mopa in north Goa, which is being constructed at a cost of 2,870 crores by the GMR Group, would be the state's second facility after the airport at Dabolim. The airport's initial capacity is 44 lakh passengers per year, and after the entire facility is finished, that number will increase to one crore. Dabolim Airport can accommodate 85 lakh people annually, however it lacks the cargo transportation infrastructure that the new airport would offer.

Flights details

Commercial operations at the airport will start on January 5, 2023. According to media outlets citing authorities, international flights will start in March. With two operating airports, Panaji is currently the nation's first capital city. Mumbai would have a second airport in Navi Mumbai, whilst Delhi will get a second airport in Jewar. Flights to and from the new airport have already been announced by airlines including IndiGo and GoFirst. The cost of flying to Goa might be reduced with more flights. GoFirst has announced intentions to begin operating 42 flights weekly from the new airport beginning next month, while IndiGo has planned the debut of 162 flights each week.

Visting North Goa? New International Airport in Mopa to ease travel, Here's everything you need to know

After 20 years, a guy in mid-Wales who spent £25,000 (US$ 30679.62) on a fake airport sign is ending the joke. A Llandegley International billboard has been a well-known sight close to the Powys community for the past 20 years. Although it appears to be a regular road sign, it directs drivers to an airport that doesn't actually exist. The owner made the decision to remove the sign after paying thousands of pounds to build and maintain it. Since 2002, there has been a sign pointing cars to Terminals one and three at Llandegley International Airport along the A44 between Rhayader and Kington.

But if you follow the directions and go the two and a half miles, you will arrive in a field outside the Powys village of Llandegley, not an airport or even an airfield.

The person behind it, Nicholas Whitehead, is a journalist who formerly partnered with Terry Jones of Monty Python and edited the Brecon and Radnor Express' Radnor edition.

Indian passengers can now board domestic flights hassle-free out of Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi airports by registering for a biometric facial recognition platform, DigiYatra (DY). It will enable paperless travel through biometric facial recognition technology, which means that a facial scan will confirm the identity of DY-registered passengers. All the travel details will be captured on this platform and passengers will not need to show any physical ID proof.

This technology will be launched with seven airports in the first phase, starting with Delhi, Bengaluru, and Varanasi on Thursday. By March next year, the same facility will be launched in Hyderabad, Kolkata, Pune, and Vijayawada airports.

The aviation ministry has planned to take this technology further to all Indian airports gradually which will reduce the boarding time of passengers, making their travel hassle-free.

An Indian man from northern Uttar Pradesh state was wrongly detained at Abu Dhabi airport, UAE, after officials erroneously found his face matching with one of the wanted criminals through face recognition software. After being questioned extensively for hours over a mistaken identity case on October 11, he was deported to India in the early hours of Sunday. After landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport, he was greeted by well-wishers and media personnel, to whom he narrated his ordeal. Praveen Kumar, who works as a contractor for a cement company in Noida, and his wife Usha were on a week-long leisure trip to Switzerland and had a connecting flight from Abu Dhabi. He stated that the company he works for had arranged the Switzerland trip for him, which was organised by a travelling agency. The agency had booked a connecting flight from Abu Dhabi as the direct flight to Switzerland was not available. But after landing at the airport, the immigration authorities seized the couple’s passports and visas and then took them to a separate room for questioning.
Bird strikes have been a major problem for planes with around 20,000 such incidents getting reported every year and a number of them even resulting in minor accidents. According to official data, most of the incidents take place very close to the runway with the estimate being around 98 feet above the ground. Chinese scientists have now come up with an innovative solution to avoid these incidents and keep the birds away from airports. They have constructed a robotic system which can be placed on the airport boundaries, and they use lasers to track and repel the birds.

According to the airport's manager, after viewing a video of this on TikTok, airline passengers are jumping lines at Heathrow by acting as though they require wheelchairs. According to John Holland-Kaye, the chief executive of Heathrow airport, some travellers were using the available wheelchair assistance to try to get through the airport quickly, and this was "the wrong thing to be doing."

On a flight from Ibiza to Bristol in June, a TikTok user recorded a video of themselves acting injured and being offered a wheelchair. "Faking hurting my leg to get through security faster and on to the plane," the caption for the video that showed the individual taking off their shoe read. About half of incoming passengers who needed assistance, according to Holland-Kaye, did so after boarding the aircraft. Those who "really need the service" were asked to inform Heathrow "well in advance so we can make sure there are enough people there to meet your needs."

Passengers "travelling with more than they normally would" and people failing to "check in all of their makeup" before passing through security, according to Holland-Kaye, are two factors that contribute to delays. Long lines at the airport have been experienced by many passengers this summer; the problem is attributed to a lack of employees. In order to relieve the load, the airport set a daily departure passenger cap of 100,000 for this month.

Artificial Intelligence-based robots have been introduced at the Coimbatore airport aimed at providing a better experience to flyers by the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Passengers will be able to avail many airport services through them, according to AAI.

The AAI also shared pictures of robots and passengers interacting with it.

“The robots will move within the airport terminal bldg. floor and approach passengers, greet them and ask if they need any information. Through them, passengers will be able to get many airport services and navigation help to their desired locations within the airport,” it added.
