A jet bridge is being investigated after it got detached from a Hawaiian Airlines plane at San Francisco International Airport when the passengers were being deplaned, said the airport.

A jet bridge is being investigated after it got detached from a Hawaiian Airlines plane at San Francisco International Airport when the passengers were being deplaned, said the airport. Recently, Hawaiian Airlines flight 42 left from Kahului in Maui and landed on time at SFO’s International Terminal A, according to FlightAware. There were no issues in the aircraft when it arrived and the jet bridge started its usual process of placing itself towards the exit door of the plane. Also Read: Air India Express chaos: Nearly 300 crew go on 'mass sick leave', more than 70 flights cancelled According to SFO spokesperson Doug Yakel, just after the jet bridge was positioned, it faced “a structural failure” with a metal strut and suddenly fell onto the plane. All passengers safely disembarked from flight: Airline Speaking to USA Today, Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson Alex Da Silva said that nearly half of the 179 passengers had deplaned when the mishap happened. After the collapse of the jet bridge, the rest of the guests and six crew members used the rear exit door and steps to come out of the plane. Hawaiian Airlines spokesperson Alex Da Silva said, “All of our guests were able to safely deplane, but our aircraft sustained some damage." The aircraft is getting repaired before it returns to service. Watch: Gravitas: Why Plane-maker Airbus must assemble in India Former American Airlines gate agent Bonnie Hayes, who had operated on jet bridges for 33 years and currently works as an expert witness in related lawsuits, while speaking to USA TODAY, said that she has “never (seen) the cab of the jet bridge collapse.” Hayes said it is generally the responsibility of the airport to perform routine maintenance checks of jet bridges, which generally occur weekly or even daily. “There’s so many checks that are done on these. Underneath, it must’ve been stressed,” she said. The passenger boarding bridge will be out of service for repairs and investigations, said SFO. (With inputs from agencies)

If you are a person who loves to travel or even a frequent traveller against your will, losing your luggage once you land in a different country or even a city away from home can be an incredibly frustrating experience. However, an airport in Japan claims that it has not misplaced even a single piece of luggage in its 30-year history.

About the airport

In a press statement, Japan’s seventh busiest airport Kansai International Airport located in the city of Osaka, said that it has not lost a single piece of baggage since it opened in 1994.

“We believe that the record of having no baggage lost since the opening of the airport is the result of the daily efforts and careful work of everyone involved, including airlines and handling companies,” said the airport which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in September this year.

The airport, last month, was crowned as the World’s Best Airport for Baggage Delivery, by the United Kingdom-based airline and airport rating website, Skytrax for the eighth time.

According to reports, the airport serves 28 million passengers in a year and in the last financial year it handled about 10 million baggage items.

How does it work?

“We don’t feel like we have been doing something special,” Kenji Takanishi, a public relations officer for Kansai, told CNN.

He added, “We have been working as we normally do. We only do our work on a daily basis and we are recognized for it. We are certainly happy to receive the award. I think our staff, especially those working on the ground, feel more pleased.”

The airport also said that their staff or baggage handlers and ground staff have never lost a bag, and if any luggage does get lost on Kansai it is typically the fault of the individual airline.

Additionally, a manager for one of the airport’s operators, CKTS, told the weekly news magazine that they aim to get all the items to baggage claim within 15 minutes of arrival. They also have a manual describing rules specific to each airline in order to do this.

The remote Mount Ruang volcano in Indonesia erupted several times on Tuesday (April 30), stated the volcanology agency of the country. The volcanic eruptions forced Indonesia to evacuate people from nearby places and also close Sam Ratulangi International Airport in the provincial capital of Manado, as per a notice issued by state-run air traffic control provider AirNav Indonesia. In the notice, the airport said that it was shutting down because of "Ruang volcanic ash". Indonesia's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the alert level to the highest after the volcanic eruption and appealed to the residents to avoid going near the volcano, as per the website. The island of Ruang, which is located in the province of North Sulawesi, is home to more than 800 residents, a lot of whom were evacuated after the volcanic eruptions earlier this month. The status level was downgraded by the authorities to level 3 last week before it was again upgraded to level 4 on Tuesday (April 30). Mount Ruang's eruption leads to a tower of ash The eruption in Mount Ruang, which is located in Indonesia's outermost region of North Sulawesi province, took place at around 01:15 am local time (1715 GMT Monday) and twice more Tuesday morning, said the volcanology agency, in a statement. It added that the volcano created a tower of ash that stretched over five kilometres (3.1 miles) in the sky. A six-kilometre (3.7-mile) exclusion zone was also re-instated by the agency which said that the locals should be aware of "the potential for ejections of incandescent rocks, hot clouds and tsunamis due to eruption material entering the sea". Watch: Indonesia battered by volcanic eruptions, at least 800 evacuated after eruption This month, more than 800 people were living near Ruang and faced evacuation. Some of them came back to their homes after the end of the emergency response status, reported AFP. It remained unclear how many residents came back and were once again forced to evacuate. Hundreds of yoga enthusiasts gathered on the runway of Bangkok's main airport on Saturday (April 27), reaching toward the reddening sky as they laid out their mats.

Despite the early morning flights rumbling overhead, participants engaged in their yoga practice, including the downward dog pose. This unique event took place on the airport's third runway, which is still under construction.

Alongside the workout, participants were provided with beverages such as coconut, iced tea, and water to enhance their routine. Around 500 yoga practitioners and camera-ready influencers began arriving at 5:00 am, navigating in the darkness to find their designated spots on the runway.

As the sun came up, yoga instructors led the group through two sessions with high spirits, despite the pollution, industrial surroundings, and occasional airplane noise.

"This was something fun, this was a nice event," said lawyer Rugeradh Tungsupakul, attending with a friend.

An 80-year-old man was not provided with a wheelchair at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday (Feb 12) after which he suffered a heart attack and collapsed.

The octogenarian had arrived from New York on an Air India flight and the couple had already requested for wheelchairs.

The lack of the availability of a wheelchair forced the octogenarian to walk around 1.5 km from the plane to the immigration counter, during which he collapsed.

The wheelchairs were pre-booked by the couple, however, only the wife received one, as per a report by The Times Of India. The husband was walking alongside his wife and by the time they reached the immigration counter, the man collapsed because of a heart attack.

A report published in the The Times Of India, quoting unnamed sources, said, “Due to a shortage, only one wheelchair assistant showed up for the couple. The wife sat in the wheelchair, while the husband decided to follow her and walked alongside. He must have walked about 1.5 km to reach the immigration area where he suddenly collapsed due to a heart attack. He was taken to the Mumbai airport medical facility and from there rushed to Nanavati hospital.”

The deceased, who was identified as an Indian-origin US passport holder, had travelled from New York to Mumbai in economy class on Air India flight AI-116.

According to an airport source, quoted in TOI, “There were 32 wheelchair passengers on this flight, but only 15 wheelchairs with accompanying staff were on the ground to help them.”

Meanwhile, an Air India spokesperson said, “One of our guests flying from New York to Mumbai on 12th February fell ill while proceeding to clear immigration with his wife, who was in a wheelchair. Due to heavy demand for wheelchairs, we had requested the passenger to wait till he was also provided with wheelchair assistance but he opted to walk along with his spouse. As advised by the airport doctor attending to him after taking ill, the passenger was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was declared to have passed away."

Errol HV, a convict wanted for a diamond heist at Schiphol airport in 2005, has been arrested in Ibiza, several reports suggest. HV, aged 59, was sentenced to 9.5 years in prison in 2021 for his involvement in the theft, considered the largest diamond heist in Dutch history.

HV is believed to be the mastermind behind the theft, which amounted to 70 million euros worth of diamonds. Despite the significant value of the stolen diamonds, virtually none of them have been recovered.

Spanish police intercepted HV on the island of Ibiza on Tuesday afternoon, apprehending him after he had been living there for some time. While sources close to HV confirmed the arrest, Dutch authorities did not corroborate the information.

Legal proceedings

The legal saga surrounding the diamond heist began in 2019 with the initial ruling. Seven suspects were arrested during the extensive investigation, leading to convictions for four individuals.

HV received a seven-year prison sentence which was later increased to 9.5 years on appeal.

The suspects appealed the verdict, and in 2020, they were released from custody pending the outcome of the appeal process.

In 2021, the Court of Appeal upheld the convictions, sentencing them to prison terms of up to 9 years and six months. However, HV and another main suspect, Marlon D, lodged appeals against the ruling.

After the Supreme Court confirmed the convictions in October 2023, arrest warrants were issued for HV and Marlon D. Marlon D was apprehended in Amsterdam in December, while HV was arrested in Ibiza after a prolonged search by FastNL, a Dutch police team focused on capturing fugitives. It remains uncertain when HV will be extradited to the Netherlands to serve the remainder of his sentence, which is approximately 6.5 years.

An extraordinary scene unfolded recently at London Gatwick Airport when an impatient traveller lost his cool while waiting for his luggage.

As per the New York Post, the passenger spat out a verbal tirade on the baggage carousel and threatened to poop on the conveyor belt if his baggage didn't show up immediately.

According to the New York Post, the man was also screaming into the carousel so that he could talk with the baggage handlers behind the scenes. The man then threatened to defecate publicly on the belt if his luggage was not sent promptly.

In the video, the passenger said, "This guy put his luggage up here, now we don't have any space. He's got no space."

The Reddit user, who shared the video, said that the man had utilised four overhead bins for keeping his luggage. "Ironically, he had like 4 big bags on the overhead bins. A Lufthansa flight from Munich to Bangkok landed on Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi on Wednesday after a married couple started fighting mid-air. The flight landed at the Delhi airport after the pilots contacted the Air Traffic Control (ATC) and informed them about a "situation and possible unruly passenger." According to the airline, a German passenger was offloaded due to an argument with his Thai wife that escalated into a loud dispute. However, the German man apologised later for his behaviour. It's been confirmed by a DGCA official that Lufthansa is taking prompt action by coordinating with the German Embassy regarding the passenger. Lufthansa has also released a statement about the incident, saying, "On Wednesday, November 27, flight LH772 from Munich to Bangkok was diverted to Delhi due to an unruly passenger on board. The person in question was handed over to authorities. The flight to Bangkok is expected to continue subsequently with minor delays. Safety and security on board for our passengers and crew is our top priority." ALSO READ | 'Hell mode?': Chinese hospitals have 'homework zones' for kids battling pneumonia, netizens react The statement also mentioned that the flight was ready to fly for Bangkok after the tyres cooled off. "Aircraft is ready for push back any time soon after cooling off of tyres for Bangkok," the official added. However, authorities are still deciding whether to hand over the man to Delhi Police or consider his apology and send him back to Germany on another flight. As per the reports, the cabin crew onboard the Lufthansa flight from Munich to Bangkok (LH772) reported disruptive conduct due to a quarrel between a husband and wife on board. Initially, the aircraft was requested to land in Pakistan. However, the request was denied for undisclosed reasons. Subsequently, the flight landed at the Delhi airport and the German man was handed over to airport security. While the cause of the fight is unknown, aviation security at the Delhi airport confirmed that the flight had to be diverted due to an argument between the husband and wife. According to a report by the Economic Times, the wife complained about her husband's behaviour to the pilot because she felt "threatened" by it. However, it is not the first time a passenger has caused a drama mid-air. In October 2023, a male passenger on a flight from Egypt to Delhi quarelled with his co-passengers and damaged seats in the aircraft. He was later handed to the Delhi Police for further investigation. (With inputs from agencies)
