<p>The dogs are being kept in a makeshift training centre at Kabul airport. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the new handlers, most of these animals were used by American forces as sniffer dogs. They have been trained to unearth explosives.</p>

<p>What represents a 'proper' dress? That too for a woman? Common sense dictates that it is she who will decide that and no other. But unfortunately, every culture in the world has its fair share of men dictating what's good/ proper/ admissible/ allowed for women. The list is endless.</p>

<p>Taliban's return to power has seen its all-male government deciding what women should wear in public. They are acting as self-declared custodians of Afghan women and think they have all the rights to dictate terms. They want Afghan women to wear burqa.</p>

<p>And Afghan women are not taking any of this. They are expressing their freedom in a unique way. Dr Bahar Jalali, who started the first gender studies program in Afghanistan wore a traditional Afghan dress and boldly proclaimed "This is Afghan culture. I am wearing a traditional Afghan dress"</p>

<p>For the first time since the Taliban seized power, Afghan police have returned to man checkpoints alongside the hardline group’s security personnel at Kabul airport, officials said on Sunday. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month, police had abandoned their posts when the Taliban swept into Kabul, ousting the government. They had feared the group will take harsh action against them. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Explaining about the reason of their return to the posts, the officers said they returned to work on Saturday on receiving calls from Taliban commanders. &nbsp;</p>

<p>On Sunday, Afghan Border National Police personnel can be seen deployed at several checkpoints outside the main buildings of the airport, including the domestic terminal. &nbsp;</p>

<p>On condition of anonymity, a member of the police force told AFP, "I came back to work yesterday more than two weeks after being sent home.” &nbsp;</p>

<p>Another officer said, "I received a call from a senior Taliban commander who asked me to come back. Yesterday was great, so happy to serve again." &nbsp;</p>

<p>The Taliban haven’t yet issued any specific instructions for the media, but they have said all Afghan outlets should reset their coverage based on Islamic laws and national interests, both vaguely defined terms that could easily pave the way for the persecution of journalists critical of the new government.</p>

<p>After the previous government collapsed in mid-August, hundreds of media workers, including dozens of journalists, fled the country, according to The Times’ own count. More than half of Afghanistan’s media organisations have halted operations because of safety concerns, an uncertain future and financial problems, said Ahmad Quriashi, director of Afghanistan Journalists Center, a media support organisation.</p>

<p>Under a refugee program expanded by the US Department of State in early August, Afghans employed by US&nbsp;media organisations became eligible for resettlement in the United States, which further fueled the exodus.</p>

<p>The result is an Afghan media that may not be able to recover or regain the freedom it enjoyed in the past two decades.</p>

<p>“It was like a dream,” Quriashi said, referring to the press freedoms that followed the Taliban’s ouster in 2001. Over two decades, Afghan media outlets uncovered corruption, exposed human rights abuses and won international recognition and awards.</p>

<p>Media and entertainment were more broadly transformed, as the United States financed television networks, newspapers and radio stations, helping them reach millions of Afghans throughout the country.</p>

<p>At its height, Afghan media boasted hundreds of outlets operating in the country. In July, the former government’s minister of information and culture, Qasim Wafayezada, said that 248 television networks, 438 radio stations, 1,669 print outlets and 119 news agencies were active across Afghanistan.</p>

<p>But “everything changed overnight for the media” once the Taliban returned to power, Quriashi said, despite the group’s promises to preserve a free press.</p>

<p>Turkish and Indian soap operas that ran on most television networks for hours everyday have vanished in recent weeks, and reality and music shows also have gone off air.</p>

<p>Tolo News, the country’s largest broadcaster, halted the production of Shabake Khanda or “Laughing Network,” a popular political comedy show watched by millions of Afghans on Friday nights.</p>

<p>Even though many female presenters appeared on local televisions a few days after the Taliban’s takeover, hosting shows and reporting on current events, the number appearing on air has since dropped to only four, said Neda, the female television anchor.</p>

<p>The Taliban haven’t allowed female journalists to return to work at the state-owned radio and television station, and have banned most from working with media in the provinces, according to Reporters Without Borders.</p>

<p>“Women journalists must be able to resume working without being harassed as soon as possible,” Christophe Deloire, secretary-general of Reporters Without Borders, said in a statement last week.</p>

<p>The Taliban have also pressured some outlets to share their news reports before publication, according to several journalists who said they refused to comply. And some may be self-censoring negative news for fear of retaliation.</p>

<p>“What we see on local media these days doesn’t reflect the realities on the ground at all,” said Hayat, a reporter for a television network. “We have no other option for now, we have to compromise and censor ourselves until we find a way to leave.”</p>

<p>Etilaat e Roz newspaper is among the few or, according to some, the only media outlet, that has continued covering the news without self-censorship, apparently undeterred by the fearful environment in Kabul. While it has halted its investigative reports due to inaccessibility of information, the paper has been covering the daily news&nbsp;even reports critical of the new Taliban government.</p>

<p>This week, the newspaper experienced the Taliban’s heavy-handed response to critical reporting.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, the Taliban rounded up scores of demonstrators around Kabul and journalists covering the protests, subjecting them to abuse in overcrowded jails, according to journalists who were present. The crackdown on the demonstrations and the ensuing coverage followed a Taliban announcement Tuesday that protests would not be allowed without government approval. At least 19 journalists were detained Tuesday and Wednesday, the United Nations said.</p>

<p>“You’re lucky you have not been beheaded,” Taliban guards told one detained journalist as they kicked him in the head, Ravina Shamdasdani, a spokesperson for the United Nations human rights office in Geneva, told reporters.</p>

<p>Reporters with Etilaat e Roz described being detained at the protests, then brought to a nearby police station where they were tied up and beaten with cables.</p>

<p>Taqi Daryabi, one of the reporters, said about a half-dozen Taliban members handcuffed him behind his back when he was on the ground on his stomach, then began kicking and hitting him until he lost consciousness.</p>

<p>“They beat so much that I couldn’t resist or move,” he said. “They forced me to the ground on my stomach, flogging me on my buttocks and back, and the ones who were in the front were kicking me in the face.”</p>

<p>Reporters working for Tolo News, Ariana News, Pajhwok News Agency and several freelance journalists have also been detained and beaten by the Taliban in the past three weeks, according to local media reports.</p>

<p>“The Taliban is quickly proving that earlier promises to allow Afghanistan’s independent media to continue operating freely and safely are worthless,” Steven Butler, Asia program coordinator for the Committee to Protect Journalists, said in a statement Wednesday. “We urge the Taliban to live up to those earlier promises, to stop beating and detaining reporters doing their job.”</p>

<p>On top of the dangerous environment, the flow of information from the government has slowed and become limited. There used to be dozens of government spokesmen; now there are only a handful speaking for the new Taliban government, and they are less responsive than during the group’s insurgency.</p>

<p>A second child of an Afghan family evacuated from Kabul to Poland died on Friday after eating soup containing death cap mushrooms, which the family had unknowingly gathered in a Polish forest outside their quarantine center.</p>

Since her safe arrival, Karimi has worked to help colleagues and their families escape. "We’ve managed to get some 36 people and their families out," she reportedly said.&nbsp;</p>

"One of the actresses of my film (Hava, Maryam, Ayesha) was coming to the airport yesterday when the bombs went off. She got away, she’s safe. But she can’t get out that way now," Karimi added.</p>

“The Taliban have refused to speak to me at all, even though I’m head of Afghan Film. I was kicked out of our (WhatApp) work group then when I asked why they re-instated me. I’ve asked if I’m still in charge, if I should return, but no answer," revealed Karimi to an international news website.</p>

From her new place of residence in Europe, Karimi reportedly said she will continue to speak up for those left behind or facing an uncertain future as refugees.</p>

<p>Italy claims they have evacuated nearly 5,000 Afghan citizens since August 15 — when Taliban took over Afghanistan. Italy has evacuated 4,900 citizens and Germany has brought 4,000 Afghans.</p>

<p>"There are still so many Afghan nationals waiting to be evacuated, and we can no longer do that with the airlift," Di Maio said.&nbsp;"Our imperative will be not to abandon the Afghan people, not to abandon Afghan women, or young Afghans and all those who over all these years have shown a great desire for evolution, for change."</p>

<p>Ten Marines and at least one Navy hospital corpsman are among the 13 US troops dead following a suicide bomb attack on crowds struggling to get out of Kabul.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per USNI, 18 US service members were wounded and an unknown number of Afghans were killed and wounded in an attack, which is believed to have been perpetrated by ISIS Khorasan.&nbsp;</p>

<p>US Central Command chief Gen. Frank McKenzie told reporters, "The attack on the Abbey gate was followed by a number of ISIS gunmen, who opened fire on civilians and military forces,” McKenzie said. “A number of Afghan civilians were also killed and injured in the attack. We are treating some of them aboard HKIA. Many other Afghan civilians have been taken out to hospitals in town. We’re still working to calculate the total losses. We just don’t know it – what that is right now".</p>

<p>Heart wrenching details began emerging Friday about some of the 13 US troops killed in a horrific suicide bombing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A young husband with a child on the way, another man who always wanted to be in the military, a man who planned to become a sheriff’s deputy when his deployment ended, were amongst the few who sacrificed their lives.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rylee McCollum, a Marine and native of Bondurant, Wyoming, was married and his wife is expecting a baby in three weeks, his sister, Cheyenne McCollum, said.</p>

<p>“We want to make sure that people know that these are the kids that are sacrificing themselves, and he’s got a family who loves him and a wife who loves him and a baby that he’ll never get to meet,” Cheyenne McCollum said.</p>

<p>Another man, Lance Corporal Kareem Mae’Lee Grant Nikoui, of Norco, California, sent videos to his family hours before he died.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the video, he showed himself interacting with children in Afghanistan. In one of the clips, he asked a young boy to say hello.<br />
“Want to take a video together buddy?” Nikoui said, leaning in to take a video of himself with the boy. “All right, we’re heroes now, man.”</p>

<p>Close family friend Paul Arreola said the videos show "the heart of this young man, the love he has.”</p>

<p>“The family is just heartbroken," he said. Arreola described Nikoui as an “amazing young man” full of promise who always wanted to be a Marine and set out to achieve his goal.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Marine Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz grew up in the St. Louis area and was among a group of Marines sent back to Afghanistan to assist with evacuation efforts, his father, Mark Schmitz, told KMOX Radio.</p>

<p>Mark Schmitz said, “This was something he always wanted to do, and I never seen a young man train as hard as he did to be the best soldier he could be,” Schmitz said of his son. “His life meant so much more. I’m so incredibly devastated that I won’t be able to see the man that he was very quickly growing into becoming.”</p>

<p>Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover, of Utah, had been in the Marines for 11 years. Speaking to the Associated Press, his father Darin Hoover said, "He is a hero. He gave his life protecting those that can’t protect themselves, doing what he loved serving his country".&nbsp;</p>

Taking to her Twitter account, the filmmaker posted a photo of herself from the airport showing the situation of a war-torn country, in which she is seen sitting and waiting outside the airport.
