On August 7, 2021, a young man from Khandra village in Haryana rewrote Indian sporting history. With a thunderous throw of 87.58 metres, Neeraj Chopra clinched India’s first Olympic gold in athletics at the Tokyo Games, ushering in a new era for Indian track and field. That one moment, captured in slow motion across millions of screens, wasn’t just about distance—it was about belief. For a country starved of Olympic success in athletics, it was a long-overdue validation. Since then, August 7 has been officially recognised as National Javelin Day—not just to honour Neeraj, but to celebrate what he set in motion. Today, four years on, javelin is no longer an obscure discipline in India. It is a sport on the rise, riding on the shoulders of Neeraj’s consistency, humility, and undeniable greatness. With the World Athletics Championships 2025 around the corner, and Neeraj still the face of Indian athletics, it’s worth reflecting on the journey that started in Tokyo and continues to blaze forward.
The day that changed everything
India had waited for decades to witness an athlete stand atop the Olympic podium in athletics. When Neeraj unleashed his gold-winning throw at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium, he broke a 100-year drought—India had never won a track and field medal, let alone gold, in Olympic history. What stood out wasn’t just the medal but the composure of the man himself. At just 23, Neeraj looked unfazed by the pressure, calmly walking back after every throw, eyes focused, posture relaxed. His technique, timing, and temperament were impeccable. More importantly, he made the sport accessible. Young Indians saw in him not a distant superhuman, but someone they could relate to—a boy from a village who made it to the top with hard work and self-belief. The result? A nation took notice.

Four years since the day I lived my dream. Happy Javelin Day! 🇮🇳 pic.twitter.com/8fY7o27vwc— Neeraj Chopra (@Neeraj_chopra1) August 7, 2025

India’s javelin boom after Neeraj's gold medal
Post-Tokyo, javelin suddenly became mainstream. Sports academies reported a surge in inquiries about javelin coaching. Sales of javelins went up. State governments began investing in infrastructure. Social media was flooded with slow-mo throws. And for the first time, athletics—not cricket—dominated primetime debates and watercooler conversations. The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) capitalised on this momentum by declaring August 7 as National Javelin Day. The idea was to create a lasting legacy, to inspire a new generation. In 2022 and 2023, over 600 districts across India hosted local javelin competitions on this date. AFI even launched a “Find the Next Neeraj” initiative to scout talent from rural areas. This wasn’t a flash in the pan. India, which once had only one credible javelin star, now boasts a growing pool of athletes. Kishore Kumar Jena, DP Manu, and Shivpal Singh have emerged as strong contenders on the world stage. Chopra’s golden throw wasn’t the end—it was the beginning.
Neeraj: The superstar of India
Despite his fame, endorsements, and global acclaim, Neeraj Chopra remains refreshingly grounded. Whether he’s training in Europe or speaking to schoolchildren in Haryana, his humility is intact. He often speaks of his struggles with injury, his commitment to discipline, and how success hasn’t changed his core. Chopra followed his Olympic gold with another historic achievement—a silver at the 2022 World Athletics Championships, making him India’s first male athlete to win a Worlds medal. Then came the Diamond League title in 2022, the Asian Games gold in 2023, and another World Championship gold in 2024, cementing his status as one of the greatest ever javelin throwers. The world now sees Neeraj not just as a one-Olympics wonder, but as a consistent elite athlete. He is part of an exclusive club of javelin greats—routinely throwing over 88 metres. And then came the inevitable. Neeraj Chopra finally crossed the elusive 90m mark at the 2025 Doha Diamond League on May 16, 2025. Neeraj kicked off the event with a 88.44m throw. His second attempt was not a valid one. He breached the 90m mark in his third attempt. In his fourth attempt, the 27-year-old threw 80.56m, while his fifth throw was not valid and his last throw, he threw 88.20m.
What Neeraj means to India?
In a country where cricket once overshadowed all other sports, Neeraj Chopra became a disruptor. He changed the narrative. Suddenly, javelin throw became part of pop culture. Bollywood biopics were discussed. Kids in playgrounds mimicked his throwing stance. Brands lined up, not just for his achievements but his relatability. More importantly, he shifted the conversation around Indian athletes. No longer was international success seen as unattainable. Chopra, along with stars like PV Sindhu, Mirabai Chanu, and Nikhat Zareen, is part of a new breed of Indian athletes who have normalised podium finishes at the biggest stages. He’s also been vocal about clean sport, mental health, and infrastructure needs—all while letting his performance do most of the talking. His rise has brought attention not just to javelin, but to biomechanics, diet, recovery science, and athletic systems in India.
The road to Tokyo... again?
As the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo approach next month, all eyes will once again be on Neeraj. It’s poetic that he returns to the city that made him a household name. But this time, the stakes are even higher. He’s no longer the underdog—he’s the man to beat. His competition is fierce. Czech star Jakub Vadlejch, Germany’s Julian Weber, and young sensation Artur Felfner from Ukraine are all throwing long and hard. But Neeraj’s strength lies in his mental calmness. He doesn’t chase records—he chases rhythm, and that often proves decisive in championship settings. His training base in Finland continues to give him access to the best coaches, throwers, and conditions. He’s carefully planned his season, skipping smaller meets to peak for the Worlds.
What next for Indian javelin?
India’s javelin future looks bright, but it needs nurturing. Infrastructure remains a challenge. Equipment, coaching, and sports science support in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are still patchy. But the AFI’s grassroots efforts, Neeraj’s mentorship, and increased media spotlight are helping.
A legacy still in the making
Four years ago, Neeraj Chopra’s golden throw made India believe. Today, as we celebrate National Javelin Day, we’re not just remembering that throw—we’re celebrating the ripple effect it created. From stadiums in rural Haryana to packed stands in Europe, Neeraj’s story continues to inspire. But his journey isn’t done. With the World Championships and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics on the horizon, the next few years could be even more defining. He’s no longer just a champion—he’s the flagbearer of Indian athletics. And as India readies to cheer again, one thing is certain—when Neeraj Chopra steps on the runway, an entire nation holds its breath, waiting for magic.

England and India just featured in perhaps one of the best five-match Test series in recent times, with both sharing honours at the end of it. Barring the result, all matches reaching day five, with almost all getting wrapped up inside the final session, answered queries or even concerns surrounding the format’s future. Even though the full-packed houses at different venues across the UK reflected the country’s love for Test cricket, its board fears that the introduction of a two-tier Test system, currently under work, could see England fall into the second bracket sometime, potentially compromising its age-old rivalries against Australia (Ashes) and India. Meanwhile, to further improve WTC ahead of the next cycle, which begins in July 2027, the ICC formed a working group last month, led by former New Zealand batter Roger Twose, during its annual conference. We want those countries being strong in this format of the game, but clearly they're going to need help. They can't do it alone. It's incumbent on all of cricket to help.” He, however, admitted being open to the idea of a two-tier Test system should it serve the bigger purpose and involve fewer complications. "My open mind is in reference to, if it helps grow the opportunities for those other countries to be stronger, and have better resources in Test match cricket, if it does that, then I'm open for it," he said. England fear two-tier Test system could compromise Ashes; Australia ‘open’ to exploring opportunities

Struggling Test opener Sam Konstas was picked Thursday (Aug 7) for Australia A's red-ball tour of India next month, with chief selector George Bailey saying the experience will be invaluable. England all-rounder Chris Woakes showed heart, grit and courage to come out and bat for his team with a dislocated shoulder in the recently concluded Oval Test against India, which the hosts narrowly lost by six runs. Walking out to bat with his one hand wrapped (inside his sweater), Woakes received massive applause from the Oval crowd for his heroics; however, how he was feeling inside was never known to anyone until now. Indian seamer Mohammed Siraj attained his career-best rankings in Tests following his Oval game heroics against England recently. Returning with nine wickets in the fifth and final Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, including a match-winning five-for in the second innings, Siraj jumped 12 places to sit in the 15th spot. His bowling partner Prasidh Krishna, who was also among the wickets in the London Test, attained his career-best 59th position in Tests. Krishna and Siraj, however, were only the second Indian bowling pair to pick four or more wickets in each innings of a Test, a feat earlier accomplished by spinners Bishan Bedi and Erapalli Prasanna against Australia in Delhi in 1969. On the other hand, ace Indian quick, Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the fifth Test due to niggle, continues to lead the Test rankings for the bowlers, sitting in the first place with 889 points. Although he played three Tests, as he was supposed to as part of his workload management, throwing nearly 120 overs while picking 14 wickets, Siraj, who received applause for being the workhorse, bowled 185.3 overs across five Tests, the most by any bowler. Also Read | 'Siraj has improved by miles in recent times', says THIS former England cricketer after India-England series Meanwhile, Siraj hogged all the limelight on the final day of the Oval Test. Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka and Canadian teen sensation Victoria Mboko booked a championship showdown with gritty semi-final wins on Wednesday (Aug 6) in the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal. Japan's Osaka, chasing her first tour-level title since the 2021 Australian Open, saved a pair of set points in the second-set tiebreaker to polish off a 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson -- who was coming off victories over Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek and Australian Open winner Madison Keys. Mboko saved a match point in a thrilling 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) victory over former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina. The 18-year-old wild card fed off the energy of the crowd, crediting ecstatic supporters with carrying her through after a tumble left her with a sore right wrist in the third set of her first tour-level semi-final. Mboko, who ousted top-seeded French Open champion Coco Gauff in the fourth round, didn't let it stop her. After going down an early break in the third set, she refused to go quietly, loading up on her forehand, fending off a match point as she broke Rybakina in the 10th game to level the set. A couple of untimely double faults helped ninth-seeded Rybakina break back for a 6-5 lead, but the ninth seed from Kazakhstan was broken at love in the next game, setting the stage for tiebreaker drama. "After I had that fall, I wasn't in the greatest spirits, but I'm happy that I kept my composure and I was kind of patient in the right moments," said Mboko, who won the last three points of a decider she called "stressful". "Anything can happen," an exhausted Mboko beamed as the crowd's cheers rained down on her. “Unfortunately, I fell, but I had everyone supporting me and pushing me.” Mboko started the season ranked outside the top 300 but had worked her way up to 85th coming into the week by grinding away in lower-level tournaments. She is assured of breaking into the top 40 no matter the result against Osaka, a former world number one who has struggled to find consistency since returning from maternity leave in 2024. She has looked re-energised this week after a coaching shakeup and rolled through the first set against Tauson. But Tauson twice regained a break in the second set as she pushed it to the tiebreaker, where she had chances to level the match after taking a 6-4 lead. Unable to convert her set points, the Dane saved one match point to make it 7-7, but Osaka won the next two to seal the victory and reach her first final in a WTA 1000-level event since Miami in 2022. "Sonny is a global icon and one of the most dynamic and accomplished players in world football,” said LAFC co-president and general manager John Thorrington. “We are proud that he has chosen Los Angeles for the next chapter of his extraordinary career.” Son said it was Thorrington who sold him on LAFC. "If I'm honest, it was not my first choice," he said. "But first call, when I talked to John after the season finished, he just changed my mind. He changed my heart. He changed my brain. He showed me the destination where I should be." Son said that in departing Tottenham after a decade in which he "gave it all", he felt like he needed "a new chapter... a new challenge". Thorrington declined to discuss the reported terms of the deal, which would surpass the $22 million Atlanta United FC spent in February to acquire the rights to forward Emmanuel Latte Lath. But he said he'd had his eye on Son for years, believing his mix of charisma and humility are “what we aspire to be.” In addition to Son's prowess on the pitch, LAFC can also expect him to be a massive draw among Los Angeles's large community of Koreans and Korean-Americans. His imminent arrival drew crowds on Tuesday to Los Angeles International Airport with fans waving South Korean flags and messages of support. "He means a lot to me, just what he's been able to achieve," said Justin Huh, a 26-year-old Korean-American software developer who lives in LA's bustling Koreatown. "Now that someone who is Korean like me is here, and he's going to have a cultural impact, I just want to be part of that wave," added Huh, who has already bought match tickets to watch Son. Huh thinks Son can have the same kind of impact that the Dodgers' Japanese superstar Shohei Ohtani has had in baseball. Josh Lee, co-president of the Tigers Supporters Group based in Koreatown, said Son is a player for all fans to cherish. "Son's arrival here is not only big for Korean people," Lee said. "Koreatown is for everyone, so Son is for everyone. "He's one of the important players in the world," said Lee, adding that the group's social media following was increasing and membership was rising already. Former world number one and Olympian Ronjan Sodhi, a name synonymous with Indian shooting’s golden era, has welcomed the launch of the Shooting League of India (SLI), calling it a landmark moment for the sport. As one of India’s most decorated trap shooters—with accolades including a World Cup gold with a world record, two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games, and an Asian Games gold—Sodhi believes the league format will fuel the sport’s popularity and inspire future generations. “The league format is something we have been discussing for a long time. With the kind of depth we now have in Indian shooting, this is the right step forward,” Sodhi said. “It’s going to be exciting for the fans, great for the young shooters, and much-needed for the sport.” The Shooting League of India, scheduled to be held between November 20 and December 2, 2025, will feature eight franchise teams in a fast-paced mixed-team format. Events will include 10M and 25M Pistol, 10M and 50M Rifle (3P), and Shotgun (Trap & Skeet). Teams will compete in a two-pool league stage, with player selection strategically tiered into Elite Champions, World Elite, National Champions, and Junior & Youth Champions to create competitive balance. Drawing parallels with other major Indian sporting successes, Sodhi emphasised the role of visibility and accessibility. “Kids have to see the sport to be inspired. Neeraj Chopra winning gold caused javelins to sell out across the country overnight. That’s the power of visibility,” he said. “When international stars and Indian Olympians shoot together in a televised, high-energy league, it becomes a spectacle people will want to follow—and join.” While praising government support through schemes like Khelo India and the National Centres of Excellence, Sodhi made a strong pitch for corporate involvement. “You can’t expect only the government to fund sport. Shooting has delivered medals consistently—at the Olympics, World Cups, and Asian Games. It is time to give back. Sponsors should see it as a national contribution, not just an investment.” Sodhi believes the franchise model can create financial sustainability for athletes. “Shooting is a long-term sport—athletes can stay competitive for 20+ years. If we support them early with the right structure, they can build stable careers, just like in cricket or kabaddi.” Shedding light on the psychological side of the sport, Sodhi highlighted the mental resilience shooting demands. “In shooting, you hold a gun—you cannot show emotions. You cannot kick the turf or break your bat. You have to internalise everything. That’s what makes it the most mentally demanding sport.” He also advocated for innovative broadcast elements, like cameras capturing facial expressions. “At the 2012 Olympics, they zoomed in on our faces. Viewers could see me talking to myself between shots. That kind of intimacy builds emotional connection with the audience.” While not every registered shooter may get a team spot this season, Sodhi sees the league as a movement that will evolve. “In the beginning, pick your favourite franchise, wear the jersey, cheer for your shooters. That is how fan bases grow. Give it time—it will happen.” As the Shooting League of India prepares to host top-tier international and Indian athletes, Ronjan Sodhi’s words serve as both a reality check and a rallying cry—for fans, brands, and institutions alike. “This league has the potential to transform Indian shooting. It’s not just about medals anymore. It’s about building a culture,” Sodhi signed off.

In a decision that has brought much relief to the BCCI, the sports ministry has amended the RTI-related provision of the National Sports Governance Bill. The revised bill includes only those organisations that are dependent on government grants and assistance within its purview. The bill, which was brought by sports minister Mansukh Mandaviya to the Lok Sabha on July 23, originally expressed in clause 15 (2) that "a recognised sports organisation shall be deemed to be a public authority under the Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 with regard to the exercise of its functions, duties and powers under this Act." The RTI has been a thorn in the side of the BCCI, which has consistently opposed being brought under it on the grounds that, in contrast to most other National Sports Federations (NSFs), it does not depend on funds from the government. The amendment in the bill actually remedies this issue. “The amended clause defines public authority as an entity that is relying on government funds or assistance. BCCI gets relief as sports ministry eases RTI provision in Governance Bill

With this amendment, there is a clear definition of what is a public authority," a source was quoted as sayng by news agency PTI. “If this had not been done, it would have been a grey area that could have led to the bill getting held up or being challenged in court. So anything that involves public money will come under RTI. It defines the specifics," the source added. “And even if a national sports body is not taking government funds, it can still be questioned if government assistance of any kind is involved in the conduct or operation of its events. Because government assistance is not merely funds, it is also about infrastructure," the source explained. The BCCI had earlier said that it would review the bill before commenting on its provisions. Rain stops play, bad light stops play and other reasons are often common in cricket as playing time is interrupted. However, on Tuesday (August 5), a bizarre situation made rounds as a fox, yes, a fox, invaded a cricket match in The Hundred as play temporarily halted in England’s annual franchise competition. The incident took place at the ‘Home of Cricket’ when a derby contest between London Spirit and Oval Invincibles was underway.

Fox invades Lord’s pitch
The incident occurred as the Invincibles were looking to chase down the target for a win and with Spirit pacer Daniel Worrall about to deliver. The interruption from the fox certainly amused the commentators, Eoin Morgan and Stuart Broad, who were left wondering how to get the wild animal off the ground without causing any issues. Some netizens compared the fox to former England football team striker Jamie Vardy, who played for Leicester City in the Premier League and is nicknamed “The Foxes”, while another one wrote, “Most entertaining thing that happened”. Another one of the users brought lead broadcasters “Fox Sports” into the context, stating he is reporting from the pitch side. One more wrote, “The fox is may be looking for the KING Power Stadium,” which is the home of Leicester City football club. ALSO READ | From Rohit Sharma to Virat Kohli, 5 Indian batters with most runs in Asia Cup (ODIs + T20Is) A similar incident occurred during the Champions Trophy 2025 when a black cat was seen strolling on the ground at the National Stadium in Karachi, which caught the eyes of fans and netizens. This led to a temporary halt in the match between Afghanistan and Pakistan before the former resumed their innings in their maiden Champions Trophy 2025 match. In August 2023, during a Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) match, a snake was seen taking the field before it was spotted by former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan. The match was put to a halt before the snake made its way out of the playing area. Previous instances have also seen dogs and cats coming onto the field and intervening in play.

On Tuesday (August 5), a bizarre situation made rounds as a fox, yes, a fox, invaded a cricket match in The Hundred as play temporarily halted in England’s annual franchise competition.

Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko, who plays for RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga is likely on his way to become new Manchester United player, according to media reports. As per reports, Benjamin Sesko has reached total agreement with Manchester United on personal terms. The contract is until June 2030. The Red Devils have been battling Newcastle United for the 22-year-old striker, with both teams submitting offers.

The 22-year-old did not appear for RB Leipzig's pre-season friendly defeat to Atalanta on Saturday amid his anticipated departure from the club. The forward, who has informed team-mates he is set to leave, trained indoors separately from the squad at Leipzig training complex on Tuesday (August 5).
Benjamin Sesko- A dream signing for Man Utd
Sesko has 39 goals in 87 games for RB Leipzig and, at 6ft 5in, would also add real physical presence to the Old Trafford club's attack line. Manchester United sources have already explained how it is likely that they will come to an agreement over Sesko despite Sir Jim Ratcliffe saying earlier this year there was a possibility of the club going out of business by Christmas unless there were huge cost-cutting exercises. Arrangements for paying for the transfers for Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo from Wolves and Brentford this summer, costing a total of £130m, have been structured in a positive manner. Apart from that, the full amount of Marcus Rashford's £325,000-a-week wages is being paid by his loan switch to Barcelona and Manchester United received £5m compensation from Chelsea when the Blues cancelled a deal to sign Jadon Sancho. Manchester United have also received over £15m in fees under sell-on clauses for Anthony Elanga, Alvaro Carreras and Maxi Oyedele. Red Devils head coach Ruben Amorim has made Sesko a priority target in which he can lead United's new attack brigade alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha but the Portuguese appears to prefer an offer for Ollie Watkins.
