F1: Carlos Sainz wins Australian GP in comeback race; Verstappen, Hamilton retire

Ferrari's Carlos Sainz won the Australian Grand Prix on Sunday (Mar 24) morning asthe capacity crowd at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne was treated to some intriguing storylines unfolding in real-time. Sainz won the GP after returning from a medical absence which forced him to skip the Saudi Arabian GP, earlier this month.
The Spaniard's teammate, Charles Leclerc finished behind him, giving the first one-two of the season for Ferrari. After a stellar performance during the qualifying session on Saturday (Mar 23), Sainz showed clinical application while leading the race and ensured he secured his third podium after winning the Singapore GP last year and the British GP in 2022.
Starting second on the grid, Sainz overtook Max Verstappen in the second lap as the Red Bull driver suffered from mechanical issues before retiring with a rear brake failure as his car caught fire.
It was the first time in two years that Verstappen had to retire his car. The retirement also ended his streak of nine successive race wins as fellow teammate Sergio Perez also struggled with the race pace and finished fifth.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton was also forced to retire early after his Mercedes car suffered a power unit failure. Mercedes' problems were compounded as George Russell had a major shunt on the final lap and crashed out of the race which meant the German team returned with no points.

Verstappen on car issues
Verstappen revealed that the car did not feel alright from the get-go and that it was like driving with a 'handbrake' on.
"What we could see so far in the data is as soon as the lights went off the right rear brake just stuck on, and of course the temperature kept on increasing," Verstappen told reporters.
"So it was also basically driving with the handbrake on and that's why already it felt the car was really weird to drive in some corners. It was just very snappy."
