The 2024 United States presidential elections dominated the country and also the search results of Merriam-Webster which finally culminated in "polarisation" becoming the word of the year.&nbsp;

“Polarisation means division, but it’s a very specific kind of division,” said Peter Sokolowski, who is editor of Merriam-Webster in an exclusive interview with The Associated Press.&nbsp;

“Polarisation means that we are tending toward the extremes rather than toward the centre," Sokolowski added.

The entry for “polarisation” in the Merriam-Webster reflected on scientific and metaphorical definitions. The word is commonly used to mean “causing strong disagreement between opposing factions or groupings.”&nbsp;

Merriam-Webster, which receives more than 100 million page views every month on its website, chose the word of the year based on the data and tracked the increase of word in search and usage.

Their 2023 word of the year was “authentic.”&nbsp;

&nbsp;“It’s a kind of backstop for meaning in an era of fake news, alternative facts, whatever you want to say about the value of a word’s meaning in the culture," he added.&nbsp;

The word “polarisation” originated in the early 1800s, Sokolowski said. He said that it is a “pretty young word". “Polarised is a term that brings intensity to another word,” he said.

“The basic job of the dictionary is to tell the truth about words. We’ve had dictionaries of English for 420 years and it’s only been in the last 20 years or so that we’ve actually known which words people look up," explained the Merriam-Webster editor.

“Search volume on Merriam-Webster.com throughout the year reflected the desire of Americans to better understand the complex state of affairs in our country and around the world,” the dictionary added.&nbsp;

Mushtaq’s business partner Shivam then revealed that he was kidnapped from the Delhi-Meerut highway and tortured by those who took him. The torture continued for 12 hours.&nbsp;

Shivam told the portal, "Mushtaq sir and his family were completely shaken over what happened to him. However, he was always sure that he would file an FIR after he composed himself. Yesterday, I went to Bijnor and filed an official FIR. We have proof of the flight ticket, the bank accounts and even CCTV footage near the airport. He also recognises the neighbourhood, even the house where he was kept. I think the police team will surely get the culprits soon.”

Something similar happened with comedian Sunil Pal.

The comedian too was kidnapped after being invited for a private event. The kidnappers held him hostage, demanding a ransom of two million rupees. However, after negotiations, Sunil managed to secure his release by paying around 800,000 rupees.

Kejriwal promises $25 monthly aid for women under ‘Mahila Samman Yojana’ if AAP wins Delhi election

India's anti-terror National Investigation Agency (NIA) is raiding at least 19&nbsp;locations across the country, including the union territory of Jammu and Kashmir, in connection with&nbsp;a case linked to radicalisation of individuals associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed,&nbsp;a Pakistan-based jihadist terrorist group.&nbsp;

Local media reports that raids are underway in at least four districts of J&amp;K:&nbsp;Baramulla, Reasi, Budgam and Anantnag.&nbsp;

The NIA is conducting raids in&nbsp;Assam, Maharashtra, UP and Gujarat as well.

An NIA official said more details about the raids will be shared soon.

Earlier, the NIA had raided seven locations in J&amp;K in September following&nbsp;the June 9 terrorist attack on a pilgrims’ bus in the Reasi district.

Mumbai police Tuesday (Dec 10) told a court that it was probing whether the tragic Kurla bus accident was carried out “deliberately” by the driver, using the vehicle as a “weapon”. &nbsp;The crash, which took place on SG Barve Road, left at least seven people dead and more than 40 people injured.

Some videos of the crash have emerged on social media, which show the bus ramming into several vehicles and crushing some pedestrians. At least five autorickshaws, 10 motorcycles, and approximately 10 pedestrians were hit by the fast-moving bus.

Mumbai police suspect that the driver of the bus, 50-year-old Sanjay More, might have staged an attack using the bus. A magistrate court has now granted police More’s custody until December 21. Sanjay More earlier blamed the accident on brake failure but some eyewitnesses presented conflicting accounts. News agency IANS quoted an eyewitness as saying that Sanjay looked elated and was ‘laughing and enjoying his death drive.’

It has also been revealed that More had no experience of driving electric vehicles and had undergone a training of just 10 days. Mumbai police told the court that it was also necessary to investigate whether the driver was under the influence of narcotics at the time of the crash.

Earlier, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) of the area concluded that the accident was caused due to “human error”.

As per the IMD, the impact of this weather system could continue to bring rainfall across parts of Tamil Nadu, over the next five days.

Owing to rough sea conditions and gusty winds, the IMD has advised fishermen against fishing along the Tamil Nadu coast.

This weather system and the rainfall alert came barely 10 days after the impact of Cyclone Fengal, which claimed 19 lives across Sri Lanka and Southern India. The October-December period is the Northeast monsoon season which brings rains to India's eastern coastal states such as Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.

Kejriwal rules out possibility of alliance with Congress; 'AAP will fight Delhi polls on its own strength'

Bengaluru police on Wednesday (Dec 11) said that an FIR was filed against four people in connection with the suicide of 34-year-old Atul Subhash, who was working as deputy general manager at a private company.

Subhash&nbsp;took his own life accusing his wife and in-laws of extortion, harassment and corruption.

The FIR is based on Subhash's brother Bikas Kumar's complaint and is filed under section 108 (abetment of suicide) and section 3 (5) (establishes joint criminal liability when two or more people act with a common intention) of the BNS.&nbsp;

It is filed against the techie's wife Nikita Singhania, his mother-in-law Nisha Singhania, his wife's brother Anurag Singhania and his wife's uncle Sushil Singhania.

It states that Atul Subhash married Nikita Singhania in 2019, with whom he had a child. Following their divorce, the four accused allegedly filed false charges against Atul and demanded Rs 3 crore to settle the case.

"My brother did everything for her. Whatever has happened was unfortunate. If he had ever discussed it with me or our father - we would have helped him get out of this situation... I want to request the govt of India and the President - that justice must be done to my brother if he is with truth otherwise give me the proof to show that he is wrong. There should be a proper investigation against the judge who is named in my brother's suicide," said Kumar.

Before taking his life, Subhash sent a chilling 24-page death note to several contacts, which was also shared on a WhatsApp group associated with an NGO he had been involved with.&nbsp;

The note, which has since gone viral, begins with the words "Justice is Due" and details Subhash’s ongoing struggles. In the note, he accused his wife, who works at Accenture, and her family, including her mother, brother, and uncle, of subjecting him to emotional and mental abuse. He described the harassment as a key factor in his despair, citing marital discord and legal battles that had escalated over time.

The incident, which quickly went viral on the internet, has sparked a wave of anger from the social media users who are demanding Accenture to terminate his wife.&nbsp;

Bengaluru Techie Suicide Case: FIR filed against Atul Subhash's wife and 3 others

Rescue efforts continued into their 46th hour on Wednesday (Dec 11) to save a five-year-old boy who accidentally fell into a borewell while playing in Rajasthan's Dausa.

One of the rescue officials at the site said that a 35-metre hole had been dug to rescue the boy.

"We have dug a hole 35 metres deep and require to dig in some 46 to 48 metres more to rescue the boy. We are doing our best and are trying to complete the rescue operations today," Yogesh said speaking to news agency ANI.

After receiving the order, they would raise complaints about receiving less number of products than ordered. In some cases, they would make a complaint that the product delivered was fake, of the wrong colour, not the same product, or the wrong size to claim refund.

Myntra Designs enforcement officer Sardar MS told police that about 5,529 such fraudulent orders were delivered to different locations across Bengaluru.

According to TOI, the police suspect a gang from Rajasthan to be involved in the fraud. Nearly all of those orders were placed from Jaipur. The fraudsters gave delivery addresses of Bengaluru and other metros, and few were delivered to commercial establishments.

India's national capital Delhi woke up to the coldest morning of the season on Wednesday (Dec 11) as the minimum temperature&nbsp;dropped to 4.9 degrees Celsius.

At least 75 Indian nationals were safely evacuated from Syria where the Islamist rebels have toppled President Bashar al-Assad and are set to form their own government.

India's Ministry of External Affairs said the 75 nationals had crossed over to Lebanon and will return via commercial flights.

"The evacuees included 44 'zaireen' from Jammu and Kashmir who were stranded at Saida Zainab," the MEA said in a statement.

"The evacuation, coordinated by the embassies of India in Damascus and Beirut, was put into effect following our assessment of the security situation and requests from Indian nationals in Syria. The Indian government accords the highest priority to the safety and security of Indian nationals abroad," the ministry added.

The ministry further advised the Indian nationals in Syria to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus.

"Indian nationals remaining in Syria are advised to stay in touch with the Indian Embassy in Damascus at their emergency helpline number +963 993385973 (also on WhatsApp) and email ID ([email protected]) for updates. The Government will continue to monitor the situation closely," the statement stated.

Of the six, the first three were Talwar class ships, built at Baltiysky shipyard, St. Petersburg. The rest are Teg class ships, built at Yantar shipyard, Kaliningrad. INS Tushil is the first of the two upgraded additional follow-on ships, the contract for which was signed in October 2016 between JSC Rosoboronexport, the Indian Navy, and the Government of India. Tamal, the sister ship of INS Tushil, is being built in Russia and is expected to be commissioned in 2025. Similarly, two ships of the same class are being built at India's Goa Shipyard, under the transfer of technology from Russia. There has been a considerable delay in the delivery of the two Russian-built ships, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic and the ongoing war with Ukraine. "S M Krishna is no more. He breathed his last at 2:45 am at his residence. Mortal remains are likely to be taken to Maddur today," the source said.

Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna is survived by wife Prema and two daughters.

Born in Somanahalli in Karnataka's Mandya district on May 1, 1932, Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna began his career in electoral politics in 1962 by winning the Maddur assembly seat as an independent.

He was then associated with the Praja Socialist Party before joining the Congress.

Later, he joined the BJP in March 2017, ending his nearly 50-year-long association with the Congress.

In January last year, Krishna announced his retirement from active politics, citing his age as the reason.

He was the 16th Chief Minister of Karnataka from October 11, 1999, to May 28, 2004, (from Congress).

He also served as the Governor of Maharashtra and was the External Affairs Minister during the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government from 2009 to 2012.

A law graduate, Krishna studied in the US. He graduated from the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and The George Washington University Law School in Washington DC, where he was a Fulbright Scholar.

Krishna served as the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to January 1993. He was also a member of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha several times between 1971 and 2014.

Krishna was a member of both the Karnataka Assembly and Council and also served as Deputy Chief Minister (1993 to 1994).

He was Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president ahead of the 1999 assembly polls in which the party won and he became the CM.

Krishna is credited by many for putting Bengaluru on the global map as a fillip given to the IT sector during his tenure resulting in the city growing as India's Silicon Valley'.

Similarly, a yellow alert for heavy rain has been issued for Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, and Villuppuram,
