Besides, the leaders have been asked by the party to meet at least 50 polling booth workers of the BJP and brief them about the Modi government's works.

Singh also asked the party leaders to promote the use of Narendra Modi App during their interactions with the people.

A day ahead of the trust vote, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara today said the Congress-JD(S) coalition was yet to discuss modalities about H D Kumaraswamy continuing as Chief Minister for a full five year term.

"We have not yet discussed those modalities," he said in response to a question whether Kumaraswamy will be the Chief Minister for full five-year term.

Speaking to reporters here, he said "we are also yet to decide on what portfolios have to go to them and what should be with us, then five years term- whether they should be or we should also...All those modalities we have still not discussed."

When asked again whether Congress was okay with giving Chief Minister's post to JD(S) for full a five-year term, Parameshwara, also the KPCC chief, said "...After discussing... Looking at the pros and cons (we will decide), our main intention is to give good administration."

Ahead of his swearing-in, Kumaraswamy had dismissed reports about his party working out a power-sharing formula of heading the government for 30 months each, with its coalition partner the Congress, saying "No such talks have taken place."

Responding to a question about several leaders being unhappy over party's choice for the Deputy Chief Minister post and on issues relating to portfolios, Parameshwara said, no one has sought any position from him or Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

"I have seen reports about (this) only in the media," he said.

Ruling out any differences between the leaders, he said there was nothing wrong in asking for a position.

"In Congress party, there are several leaders who are capable of becoming Deputy Chief Minister or Chief Minister...That's the asset of the Congress party."

"It is left to the party high-command to decide on who has to be given what position in this situation when we are in a coalition government," he said.

Asked about senior Congress leader D K Shivakumar being unhappy and holding a separate meeting with a few MLAs, Parameshwara said, "all MLAs are together and we will be successful in the floor test."

"Discussions, group meetings may have happened or not, but above all the fact is that we are united. I can say only this," he added.

Reports said Shivakumar, who was also a contender for the deputy chief minister's post, was unhappy with the party leadership.

Shivakumar, who emerged as a key figure in keeping the party MLAs together before the trust vote of BJP's Yeddyurappa government, was reportedly upset over not getting the Deputy CM post.

About his continuation as KPCC president, Parameshwara said he has not heard anything from the high command on the matter, but he might have to opt for one position.

Asked about the demand that Shivakumar be made party chief, Parameshwara said, "it is a happy thing if he becomes president as an experienced politician and leader will lead the party."

On whether there will be another Deputy Chief Minister along with him, he said was not aware of it.

"I don't have such information, and no such discussions have taken place."

After the floor test Congress and JD(S) leaders along with the Chief Minister would sit together to decide on a coordination committee, Parameshwara said.

"At the same time, we will form an empanelled group to formulate a common minimum programme," he said.

Claiming that the party was not defeated in the election as Congress' vote share was more than the BJP, Parameshwara said a committee would be formed and it would travel across the state and find reasons for the party's defeat.

He, however, tried to put the blame on EVMs for the party's performance in some areas.

"...There are several reasons that are being mentioned, some are even saying that EVMs were manipulated. We will get to know about these things when we go to the spot," he said.

Parameshwara said he felt that there may be a possibility that EVMs were manipulated.

He said the party has got information that in a few constituencies where there was 70-80 per cent Congress voters, there also BJP got the highest lead. "So there is a suspicion (about EVMs being manipulated)," he said.

He said he was not complaining that EVMs were manipulated in all 222 constituencies that went to polls.

Pointing out that his party had demanded ballot papers instead of EVMs ahead of the May 12 elections, Parameshwara said "In the days to come we will demand for ballot papers and we don't want EVMs."&nbsp;

Full 5-year term for Kumaraswamy still not discussed, says deputy CM Parameshwara

India needs to be central to what the Trump administration does in South and Central Asia, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told the lawmakers on Thursday, asserting that India "ought to be" one of America's closest partners.

"For scores of reasons, India needs to be central to what we do. Specific issues -- South Central Asia issues, Southeast Asia issues. They ought to be one of our closest partners and we ought to do everything we can to make sure that we achieve that," he told the members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. 
 
Pompeo was responding to questions from Senator Chris Coons from Delaware about how to further strengthen the US-India relationship.

"Mr Secretary, if you would like to say anything about how we can work with this most populous democracy, a potential strategic partner to strengthen that relationship, I'll make that my last question," Coons asked.

He said sustaining a strategic dialogue with India was something that "would enjoy strong support here".

Pompeo responded that, "Defense Secretary (James) Mattis and I will jointly meet with our Indian counterparts in a dialogue that the two countries have had. I don't know that the date's been set but we're looking to do it. I think it's set this summer, very important."

Pompeo and Mattis are expected to host their Indian counterparts -- External affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defense Minister Nirmala Sitharaman -- sometime this summer for the inaugural 2+2 dialogue.

The decision about this was taken when Prime Minister Narendra Modi was hosted by President Donald Trump at the White House on June 26 last year.

The US-India relationship enjoys bipartisan support in the US Congress.

Early this week, a top US State Department official said the Trump administration supports India's emergence as a leading global power and as a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region.

"The US-India partnership is rooted in shared democratic values and a commitment to a rules-based order. We support India's emergence as a leading global power and as a key partner in our efforts to ensure that the Indo-

She said,&nbsp;"All countries are coming together to achieve peace. But, I don't know when we (India and Pakistan) will achieve peace. We are working on forming an exclusive Border battalion in which people living closer to border areas will be included".&nbsp;

Over thousands of people across the International border in Jammu and Kashmir moved out of&nbsp;their homes in the last few days to escape heavy shelling by the Pakistan forces.

The settlements along the LOC has come to a standstill after the migration of the people from there.&nbsp;

"Arnia town is empty as most of its population has migrated. They have shifted either to their relatives or to shelter camps set up by the government", Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Jammu, Arun Manhas, told PTI.

In the wake of the Ramzaan, the Home Ministry had suspended any operation by state security forces against the militants.&nbsp;However, the forces had the right to respond to an attack in order to safeguard themselves.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir police along with the army have busted a terrorist hideout in Ramban district's Kalimasta forest area. The forces have also recovered huge stock of arms and ammunition.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today laid the foundation of five development projects worth Rs 27,000 crores in Jharkhand today.

While addressing a rally in the state's Sindri town, PM Modi said his government was devoting significant resources for the empowerment of the poor, Dalits and the tribal communities.

"Central Government is devoting significant resources for the empowerment of the poor, Dalits and tribal communities. Today, we have laid the foundation stone for five big projects. The total cost of these projects is Rs 27,000 crore," PM Modi said.

Terming Jharkhand as a land of "courage", the Prime Minister said the state and the Centre have been working hand-in-hand from past four years for the progress of the state and empowerment of the people.

PM Modi, along with Jharkhand's Chief Minister Raghubar Das, will also lay the foundation of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Deoghar.&nbsp;

The prime minister said that the establishment of&nbsp;AIIMS&nbsp;in Jharkhand will transform the healthcare sector in the state.

Tracing back the achievement of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) after assuming power, PM Modi said it was his government who made the electricity available to 18,000 villages of the country.

He further said they aim to make electricity available to every household in India.

"We worked to brighten the lives of people in these villages and took electricity there," the prime minister said.

He assured that soon the fertiliser plants, which had stopped working, will be revived, which will benefit Eastern India.&nbsp;

Other projects that will be kicked off by PM Modi would include the development of Deoghar airport, gas pipeline development at Deoghar AIIMS and in Ranchi among other projects.

Government devoting significant resources for development of Dalits, tribals: PM Modi in Jharkhand

The Government of Pakistan has called for a temporary ban on the exhibition and screening of Indian films during Eid holidays next month.&nbsp

Indian films will be banned from two days before the Eid to until two weeks after the holidays, a notification issued by Pakistan's ministry of information and broadcasting noted.&nbsp

According to the officials, the move is an outcome of the requests received by the Pakistani film exhibitors, distributors and production houses.

"The notification says that the temporary ban is being imposed in order to promote local movies on the festivals, a time when usual than the larger audience is attracted towards cinemas," an official from the Pakistan Film Exhibitors' Association noted.

According to reports, the notification would also be applicable for the Eid-ul-Adha holidays that will fall around late August or September.

Pakistani film producers and artists have been facing stiff completion from the Indian and Hollywood movies. The limited number of screens in the country does not facilitate good business for most distributors and filmmakers in Pakistan.

Eid is also the time when a number of new Pakistani films are usually due for a release.

Indian films will be banned from two days before the Eid to until two weeks after the holidays, a notification issued by Pakistan's ministry of information and broadcasting noted. According to the officials, the move is an outcome of the requests received by the Pakistani film exhibitors, distributors and production houses. "The notification says that the temporary ban is being imposed in order to promote local movies on the festivals, a time when usual than the larger audience is attracted towards cinemas," an official from the Pakistan Film Exhibitors' Association noted. According to reports, the notification would also be applicable for the Eid-ul-Adha holidays that will fall around late August or September. Pakistani film producers and artists have been facing stiff completion from the Indian and Hollywood movies. The limited number of screens in the country does not facilitate good business for most distributors and filmmakers in Pakistan. "The hypocrite chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, who visited Palghar for poll campaign, said the Sena has stabbed the BJP in the back. This shows they have not understood the history or Chhatrapati (Shivaji)," the Sena said in an editorial in its mouthpiece 'Saamana'.

"Today, the BJP has become a mad murderer that stabs anybody coming in its way," it alleged.

Fadnavis had recently said that the Sena had betrayed the BJP by fielding the son of late MP Chintaman Wanaga in the Palghar Lok Sabha bypoll.

The Sena said the BJP's act of giving candidature to former Congress leader Rajendra Gavit for Palghar bypoll and speaking against the Sena was actually back-stabbing.

"The language of back-stabbing does not suit Yogi (Adityanath) or Devendra Fadanvis," the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said, adding that the BJP was giving an opportunity to those who had back-stabbed Balasaheb (Thackeray) when he was alive.

The Sena said it has decided to fight all the elections alone, be it the Palghar bypoll or the recently-held Legislative Council elections.

"This is just the beginning of tomorrow's fight," the Sena said in an apparent reference to the next year's Lok Sabha elections.

"The Sena's victory in Nashik and Parbhani is just the beginning and our win in Palghar (LS bypoll) will be the trailer. The developments that follow will change the course of politics in Maharashtra," it said.

It said that although politics was full of selfish people, the Shiv Sena and its saffron flag stood out in the crowd.

"Yogi comes here and gives lessons on Chhatrapati. However, while garlanding his statue, he does not even remove his chappals. This is an insult to Chhatrapati Shivaji. What does the BJP have to say on this," the Sena asked.

It alleged that the BJP was damaging the image of Maharashtra, which is known for its "honesty and trustworthiness".

But does director Abhishek Sharma's film 'Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran' - based on the incident- induce any such feelings?&nbsp;Not quite.&nbsp; 
 
'Parmanu: The Story Of Pokhran' weaves together the story of how India secretly conducted nuclear tests in Pokhran, Rajasthan between May 11 and 13 in 1998. The tests, in the film, are attributed to six individuals. John Abraham plays IAS officer Ashwat Raina, the leader of the pack who puts together a team of intelligence and army officers and scientists to carry out the secret operation. They have limited time in hand, we are told. But with Ashwat breaking into lectures about how nothing comes before motherland, and everything is for the country, the motley group seem to be charged up and fight against the odds.&nbsp;

With dollops of fiction and juvenile depiction of the real incident, 'Parmanu's' narrative dwindles right from the beginning. It also doesn't help that the film is very poorly edited- there are too many loose ends, too many empty spaces between dialogues where the characters are not doing much which&nbsp;slackens the pace to a great extent.&nbsp;

We get the film's intent though. Credit should be given to the makers for choosing a story like this for mainstream cinema. But is that enough to make it an engaging watch?&nbsp;

In the second half, the pace picks up, especially near the climax. The scenes where the scientists and intelligence officer try to cheat the hovering American satellites as they lay the base for the test are quite thrilling.&nbsp;

At least 13 people lost their lives in the firing by police during protests against the Sterlite factory on May 22 and 23. More than 70 people are undergoing treatment.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K. Palaniswami yesterday assured that his government was taking steps to shut down the Sterlite factory at Thoothukudi.

The state chief minister also said that the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had denied the permission to Sterlite factory to continue running the factory, however, the factory got the permission from the National Green Tribunal.

He also added that the state government had challenged the apex court against the NGT ruling.&nbsp;

The CBI on Friday told the Delhi High Court that the 2G spectrum case allegedly involving former telecom minister A Raja, DMK MP Kanimozhi and others was "a case of monumental loss and a shame to the nation". 
 
Challenging the acquittal of the DMK leaders and others, Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told a bench of Justice SP Garg that huge loss to the public exchequer has been caused due to the spectrum allocation scam. 
 
"This is a case of monumental loss and a shame to the nation," Mehta said. 
 
The ASG also opposed the plea of the accused seeking more time to file their response saying "delaying tactics" were being adopted by them to prolong the proceedings. 
 
The high court has now posted the CBI's plea challenging their acquittal by a special court in the 2G spectrum case for August 2 while the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) plea has been fixed for August 6. 
 
During the hearing, lawyers for some of the accused in the case said that a number of charge sheets have been filed in these cases and they should be heard separately. 
 
The high court had earlier issued notices to Raja, Kanimozhi and others on the CBI's plea challenging their acquittal by a special court in the 2G spectrum case. 
 
A similar order was passed by Justice Garg on the plea of the ED challenging their acquittal in the money laundering case arising out of the 2G scam case. 
 
The court had also allowed the interim plea of the ED for maintaining status quo with regard to the properties worth around Rs 223 crore which the agency had attached in the money laundering case. 
 
The ED did not want the properties to be released from attachment, a consequence of the acquittal in the money laundering case, saying that third party rights might be created in them. 
 
On March 19, the ED moved the high court challenging the special court's order acquitting all the accused in the money laundering case arising out of the 2G scam. 
 
Yesterday, the CBI too challenged in the high court the acquittal of the accused in the case. 
 
A special court on December 21 last year had acquitted Raja, Kanimozhi and others in the CBI and ED cases. 
 
Besides Raja and Kanimozhi, the special court had acquitted 17 others, including DMK supremo M Karunanidhi's wife Dayalu Ammal, Shahid Balwa and Vinod Goenka of STPL, Asif Balwa and Rajiv Aggarwal of Kusegaon Fruits and Vegetables Pvt Ltd, film producer Karim Morani, P Amirtham and Sharad Kumar, Director of Kalaignar TV in the ED case. 
 
The ED, in its charge sheet, had alleged that Rs 200 crore was paid by Swan Telecom (P) Ltd (STPL) promoters to DMK-run Kalaignar TV. 
 
On the same day, the trial court had acquitted Raja, Kanimozhi and 15 others, including former Telecom Secretary Siddharth Behura, Raja's erstwhile private secretary R K Chandolia, Swan Telecom promoters Shahid Usman Balwa and Vinod Goenka, Unitech Ltd MD Sanjay Chandra and three top executives of Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group (RADAG) -- Gautam Doshi, Surendra Pipara and Hari Nair, in the CBI's 2G case. 
 
The CBI had alleged that there was a loss of Rs 30,984 crore to the exchequer in allocation of licences for the 2G spectrum which were scrapped by the top court on February 2, 2012. 
 
Special Judge OP Saini, however, had held that the prosecution had "miserably failed" to prove the charges. 
 
The special court, which was set up on March 14, 2011 for hearing 2G cases exclusively, had also acquitted Essar Group promoters Ravi Kant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia and six others in a separate case arising out of the 2G scam probe. 
 
The first case, prosecuted by CBI, had 17 accused, while the second matter, pursued by ED, had 19 undertrials. The third one had eight accused including Essar promoters. 
 
In the CBI case, Raja, Kanimozhi and 15 others were tried under provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with offences of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery among others.&nbsp;

The special court, which was set up on March 14, 2011 for hearing 2G cases exclusively, had also acquitted Essar Group promoters Ravi Kant Ruia and Anshuman Ruia and six others in a separate case arising out of the 2G scam probe. The first case, prosecuted by CBI, had 17 accused, while the second matter, pursued by ED, had 19 undertrials. The third one had eight accused including Essar promoters. In the CBI case, Raja, Kanimozhi and 15 others were tried under provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with offences of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery among others.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has completed four years. During this time, his government launched several initiatives which garnered laurels as well as created a lot of buzz across the country.

As his party gears up for elections next year, here is a look at his pet schemes and how they have performed in these four years:

Goods and Services Tax

This was one of the most crucial reform introduced by the Modi government. Though the plan was in the works for more than a decade, the GST (as it is popularly called) was finally implemented in July, 2017. The GST replaced many indirect taxes (as many as 14) that previously existed and streamlined tax rates across the country under one umbrella. The implementation of GST altered the country's indirect tax regime for good.

The GST was meant to introduce single tax slab across the country, but after numerous discussions and political compulsions, there are now four slabs. However, it has reduced the number of taxes while moving goods within the country, or availing services at different locations. Initially, it resulted in drop in tax collection, but after nearly a year of GST, the numbers have gone up.

Demonetisation

On November 8, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took the nation by surprise when he announced the discontinuation of existing high-values currency notes - Rs 500 and 1000 - which was termed as demonetisation. THe decision was taken essentially to wipe out all the black money, curb fake currency and terror financing.

This prompted people to embrace digital payment channels and reduced their dependence on cash. Post-demonetisation, the number of tax returns filed by individuals increased 25.3 per cent and 9.1 million taxpayers have been added to the tax net.

Demonetisation, like GST, was put to challenge both by opposition parties and people who were shocked at huge amounts of cash disappearing from the system. Many assembly elections and bypolls were fought solely on these two economic decisions of the BJP, and the party paid by losing some of these polls. The main criticism was ATM machines going dry and long queues outside, but the upheaval was contained a few months later. Government announced a slew of measures to make people's lives easier.

Demonetisation, the gamble which government played, directly hit sectors like real estate where presence of black money was highest. The growth rate, which had plunged initially, is back now and compliance among the business community has increased.

Make in India

Just a few months into his term, PM Modi launched the "Make in India" scheme to facilitate domestic investment, boost in-house research & development (R&D) and create skill-based jobs by developing manufacturing in the country and to make India a global manufacturing power.

A "Start-up India" programme was also launched with the objective of making India the start-up capital of the world. Modi promised an increase in manufacturing's share of the country's GDP from 16 per cent to 25 per cent by 2022 and to create 100 million additional jobs by that year.

Aadhaar linking

The Modi government introduced a policy to link PAN card, voter ID, LPG connection card, ration card and mobile number to a 12-digit unique number, known as Aadhaar. It was introduced on March 26, 2016.

Modi government projected and Parliament enacted the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act. Today, Aadhaar has become India's most credible identity currency, and is used while filing taxes, and buying financial products like mutual funds.

PM Modi said that the unique identification number will work as a "big weapon" in the fight against benami property. "Aadhaar has a played a big role in ensuring that ration at proper rates, scholarships, pension and government subsidies reached the poor," he said.

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign)

Swachh Bharat Abhiyan was launched on October 2, 2014, by PM Modi with hopes to increase the reach of sanitation facilities to every family. Under the scheme, toilets, solid and liquid waste disposal systems, cleanliness, and safe and adequate drinking water supply will be ensured in every village of the country so that they can become open-defecation free by October 2, 2019. Modi nominated notable personalities from film industry, sports, media, business and other celebrities to promote the initiative.

The mission's biggest component, the Swachh Bharat Mission-Gramin or SBM-G, which has the vital mission of constructing 10 crore toilets in India's villages, has been underfunded since 2014, research report shows. The gap between money the SBM-G needs and what it actually gets has extended from Rs 3,500 crore in 2016-17 to an astounding Rs 15,000 crore in the coming financial year.

The BJP on Friday claimed that it has been forced to relocate its over 3,000 panchayat members, who won in the recent local polls in West Bengal, due to "threats" from the ruling Trinamool Congress.

The BJP's general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, who is the party's state in-charge, alleged that TMC workers supported by local police have been threatening its elected members with dire consequences if they do not either join their party or resign.

"We have been forced to remove about 3,000 of our 6,000 members to different locations due to harassment from the TMC leaders," he said.

Vijayvargiya said his party has taken close to 1,000 panchayat members to neighbouring Jharkhand for safety.

He said these members will return to their villages only after their tenure begins after one-and-a-half months.

Attacking state chief minister Mamata Banerjee, he said she is projecting herself as a champion of democratic values, but her conduct has been far from it with over 60 murders and 1,500 injured in the elections.

Stocks defied gravity for the second straight session on Friday as recently-mauled energy and metal counters attracted heavy buying interest.

A recovering rupee, encouraging earnings and unabated buying by domestic institutional investors added to the momentum, brokers said.

The BSE Sensex surged over 261 points to finish at 34,924.87, while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 91.30 points to 10,605.15.

On the global front, investors were cautious after US President Donald Trump cancelled a planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and threatened to impose tariffs on auto imports.

The 30-share BSE Sensex opened on a strong footing at 34,753.47 and maintained its upward trend to hit the day's high of 35,017.93. It finally ended at 34,924.87, up 261.76 points, or 0.76 per cent.

The index had rallied 318.20 points in the previous session.

The Nifty finished the day at 10,605.15, showing a hefty gain of 91.30 points, or 0.87 per cent, after shuttling between 10,628.05 and 10,524.

On a weekly basis, the Sensex scored a moderate gain of 76.57 points, or 0.22 per cent while the Nifty rose 8.75 points, or 0.08 per cent.

Meanwhile, Indian markets have witnessed a significant rise during the first four years of the Narendra Modi government.&nbsp;

Since May 26, 2014, the day Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister, the benchmark Sensex has risen by 10,207.99 points or 41.30 per cent, while the NSE Nifty spurted 3,246.10 points or 44.11 per cent. The Sensex hit a lifetime high of 36,443.98 on January 29, 2018.

"A less than hawkish US Fed minutes and positive global cues uplifted domestic sentiments. Short covering was broad-based across sectors, while some buying interest was seen in mid and small cap stocks.&nbsp;

"Some respite was seen in INR and oil prices which helped the market to recoup its losses this week," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services.

Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) net bought equities worth Rs 1,480.51 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 701.93 crore yesterday, provisional data showed.

State-owned oil companies IOC, ONGC, HPCL and BPCL recovered after a sharp decline yesterday.

ONGC was the top performer in the Sensex pack, rising 4.59 per cent, with global crude oil benchmark Brent dipping to USD 77.03 a barrel.

IT stocks extend gains for the second day, led by Infosys 0.57 per cent, Tata Elxsi 3.03 per cent and Wipro 0.28 per cent.

Tata Consultancy Services' market valuation surged past the Rs 7 lakh crore mark in intra-day trade, making it the first company to achieve this milestone.

Tata Steel climbed 3.43 per cent after the NCLAT refused to entertain a second round of bidding for Bhushan Steel.

Vedanta Ltd shares recovered 0.60 per cent after a two-session falling streak.

In the Asian region, Japan's Nikkei ended 0.06 per cent higher, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng fell 0.56 per cent and Shanghai Composite shed 0.42 per cent.

In the Eurozone, Frankfurt's DAX rose 0.99 per cent and Paris CAC gained 0.52 per cent in early deals. London's FTSE rose 0.14 per cent.&nbsp;

Stocks defied gravity for the second straight session on Friday as recently-mauled energy and metal counters attracted heavy buying interest. A recovering rupee, encouraging earnings and unabated buying by domestic institutional investors added to the momentum, brokers said. The BSE Sensex surged over 261 points to finish at 34,924.87, while the broader NSE Nifty jumped 91.30 points to 10,605.15. On the global front, investors were cautious after US President Donald Trump cancelled a planned meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and threatened to impose tariffs on auto imports. The 30-share BSE Sensex opened on a strong footing at 34,753.47 and maintained its upward trend to hit the day's high of 35,017.93. It finally ended at 34,924.87, up 261.76 points, or 0.76 per cent. The index had rallied 318.20 points in the previous session. The Nifty finished the day at 10,605.15, showing a hefty gain of 91.30 points, or 0.87 per cent, after shuttling between 10,628.05 and 10,524. On a weekly basis, the Sensex scored a moderate gain of 76.57 points, or 0.22 per cent while the Nifty rose 8.75 points, or 0.08 per cent. Meanwhile, Indian markets have witnessed a significant rise during the first four years of the Narendra Modi government. Since May 26, 2014, the day Modi was sworn in as the Prime Minister, the benchmark Sensex has risen by 10,207.99 points or 41.30 per cent, while the NSE Nifty spurted 3,246.10 points or 44.11 per cent. The Sensex hit a lifetime high of 36,443.98 on January 29, 2018. "A less than hawkish US Fed minutes and positive global cues uplifted domestic sentiments. Short covering was broad-based across sectors, while some buying interest was seen in mid and small cap stocks. "Some respite was seen in INR and oil prices which helped the market to recoup its losses this week," said Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Financial Services. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs) net bought equities worth Rs 1,480.51 crore, while foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares to the tune of Rs 701.93 crore yesterday, provisional data showed. State-owned oil companies IOC, ONGC, HPCL and BPCL recovered after a sharp decline yesterday. ONGC was the top performer in the Sensex pack, rising 4.59 per cent, with global crude oil benchmark Brent dipping to USD 77.03 a barrel. IT stocks extend gains for the second day, led by Infosys 0.57 per cent, Tata Elxsi 3.03 per cent and Wipro 0.28 per cent. Tata Consultancy Services' market valuation surged past the Rs 7 lakh crore mark in intra-day trade, making it the first company to achieve this milestone. The 2014 elections also witnessed complete rout of RLD, SP and BSP candidates in Uttar Pradesh. After tasting victory in Phoolpur and Gorakhpur, Opposition has once again got together and both SP and BSP are supporting the RLD candidate. RLD’s campaign is being held together by Jayant Chaudhary, former MP and grandson of former Prime Minister late Chaudhary Charan Singh. He says that RLD will defeat BJP candidate.

WION: Is RLD confident of winning election in Kairana?

Jayant Chaudhary: We will win elections in Kairana. The local economy is not doing well and farm crisis has affected every family in this region. We are running an innovative campaign. It is localised in nature and we have picked up issues related to common men. We have been asking people,”Is Ganna important to you or Jinnah.”&nbsp;Our’s is not a high decibel BJP campaign. I have done 145 meetings already and none of them were huge rallies. BJP’s campaign is negative as of now. More so our coalition is working in harmony and cadres of SP-BSP are supporting and cooperating with each other. Our workers are also watching national development very keenly and they feel that BJP can be taught a lesson in this election. For this reason, there is coming together of non-BJP people.

WION: 2013 riots created polarisation which wiped out your party. What is different today that Jat community will vote for you once again?

Jayant Chaudhary: I would say that the social alliance broke after 2013 riots. Hindu Muslim tensions made it difficult for the community to vote together. But we have built bridges. We organized bhaichara sammelans in the area. Lot of water has passed under the bridge since 2013. People want to move on. A lot of cases are being settled outside the courts too. We will beat the polarisation by bringing the people together. We failed to recognise the tension which existed prior to 2013 and could not effectively resolve it. Subsequently, small incidents led to bigger events and an open conflagration.

WION: Is Grand Alliance a good idea?

Jayant Chaudhary: Grand Alliance is in the national context. There is a difference but they can be worked out. But we need to choose sides. RSS says that regional partiers have always failed. Regional parties can take on Modi. All that is required is a coherent strategy.

WION: Big alliances in past have never completed the term ever?

Jayant Chaudhary: We are jumping the gun. Politics always throw up surprises. Life is not linear and history does not always repeat itself.

WION: Can grand alliance in Uttar Pradesh defeat BJP?

Jayant Chaudhary: It is happening. It can happen. At the regional level, votes can be transferred. Real cooperation can take place between regional parties. Cadres are motivated. They see themselves as part of a national story and this feeling is making a big difference on ground.

WION: Can we say that only challenge BJP is receiving from is from regional parties?

Jayant Chaudhary: Regional parties definitely pose a challenge but understand that Congress too will have to play a role. It is the largest national party in the Opposition. Congress will have to play the role of an axle. They are in middle of it too. But regional parties are playing an effective role of an Opposition. There is no problem of coming together but a larger understanding will need to be built for it to sustain itself.

Actor Kareena Kapoor believes the secret to her longevity in the film industry is striking a balance between commercial and alternative cinema.

Kareena says that one should never get stuck to any one genre as that gets boring and there is the added risk of getting typecast. Her aim is to cater to all sorts of audience.

"I am always proud of my glamorous image. One has to enjoy some commercial success. If I have done an 'Udta Punjab', then I have also done the 'Golmaal' series. I have always tried to balance things out.&nbsp;

"To sustain in the film industry for 18 years one has to keep doing exciting work. I do films that suit my personality, my time limit. I do films that I like," Kareena told PTI.

The actor says she has been a risk-taker right from the beginning of her career despite being a commercial heroine.

"When I was 22-year-old, I did 'Chameli' and people thought I would not do it. For me, it is all about having the right balance of things - commercial and being part of different kind of movies."

Citing the example films such as 'Udta Punjab', 'Ki and Ka', 'Chameli'&nbsp;and 'Omkara', Kareena insists that she has always picked up stories that "no mainstream commercial heroine" would do.

"I just see - is this film entertaining, is the script good? Can I see myself in it and do I have a good part? When all these things fall into place I tick a film and I am on board."

For her, there is a difference between being an actor and a star and she says she has always looked at herself first as an actor and then as a star.

"I don't think anyone joins the industry thinking, 'I want to become a star'. You join it because you like acting, you like movies, you are passionate about cinema. I enjoy acting and people like me, my work and that is why I am a star."&nbsp;

She also credits a loyal fan-base for standing by her in her successes and failures.&nbsp;

"I have a loyal fan following and I feel lucky to be one of those few actors to have the support of fans. I am a fan-built star as I have had successes and failures and nothing has deterred my fans. My fans have stood by me every time."

But there is a change in her priorities after the birth of son Taimur

"It is interesting when directors write roles for you, but maybe I can't do all kind of roles. Now I look at how much time a film would take. I have a limited amount of time because I have to give a lot of time to family and my son. So I will do one film a year because now I can't do three films."&nbsp;

Her next release is 'Veere Di Wedding', a story about four female friends played by- Kareena, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, and their trials and tribulations in the society.

"It is a fun film and people are talking about women empowerment and feminism. The story is about four girls. The director came up with this concept. So what is wrong (in that) as there was a 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. This story is from the female point of view...That's it!," Kareena says.

The four protagonists in the film use cuss words but Kareena says she fails to understand why there is so much focus on that.

"Saif Ali Khan was the villain in 'Omkara' and he was bad mouthing. He won a lot of awards for the film. It is required in the film, so it is there. Nobody is doing it just for the sake of it.

"This film's language and the platform is different. The audience we are catering to is also different. We are not forcingly saying anything, the tonality is such."

I enjoy acting and people like me, my work and that is why I am a star." She also credits a loyal fan-base for standing by her in her successes and failures. "I have a loyal fan following and I feel lucky to be one of those few actors to have the support of fans. I am a fan-built star as I have had successes and failures and nothing has deterred my fans. My fans have stood by me every time." But there is a change in her priorities after the birth of son Taimur "It is interesting when directors write roles for you, but maybe I can't do all kind of roles. Now I look at how much time a film would take. I have a limited amount of time because I have to give a lot of time to family and my son. So I will do one film a year because now I can't do three films." Her next release is 'Veere Di Wedding', a story about four female friends played by- Kareena, Sonam Kapoor, Swara Bhasker and Shikha Talsania, and their trials and tribulations in the society. "It is a fun film and people are talking about women empowerment and feminism. The story is about four girls. The director came up with this concept. So what is wrong (in that) as there was a 'Dil Chahta Hai' and 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara'. This story is from the female point of view...That's it!," Kareena says. The four protagonists in the film use cuss words but Kareena says she fails to understand why there is so much focus on that. "Saif Ali Khan was the villain in 'Omkara' and he was bad mouthing. He won a lot of awards for the film. It is required in the film, so it is there. Nobody is doing it just for the sake of it. "This film's language and the platform is different. The audience we are catering to is also different. We are not forcingly saying anything, the tonality is such."
