Delhi's Yamuna gets covered by toxic foam, raising concerns ahead of Chhath Puja
Toxic foam floats on Delhi's Yamuna River.
Toxic foam has inundated Delhi-NCR's Yamuna River ahead of Chhath Puja, a festival which will be celebrated from November 6 to 8 in India with devotees performing rituals in the river and on its banks.
The foam has raised concern regarding increasing pollution levels inDelhi-NCR. Since the foam is indicative of severe pollution, the authorities have deployed chemical defoamers to mitigate the issue.
Footage was shared by news agency ANI on Sunday (Nov. 3) in which toxic foam was seen floating on the Yamuna River at Kalindi Kunj where pollution levels have remained very high.
BJP slams AAP over Yamuna pollution
BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla criticised the Delhi government and blamed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for the increasing pollution in the Yamuna River.

“The day after Diwali, while we are here at Yamuna ghat, we can see a thick layer of foam on the river. This foam is a direct result of the corruption perpetrated by Arvind Kejriwal and the Aam Aadmi Party. Now, ahead of Chhath Puja, they are merely sprinkling chemical defoamers,” said Poonawalla.
“Arvind Kejriwal is responsible for turning Delhi into a gas chamber; we now have to wear masks. They blameUttar Pradeshbut ignore the stubble burning in Punjab. They have failed to address the root causes of pollution in Delhi," he added.
Delhi Jal Board begins sprinkling of anti-foam agent
According to the water utility's officials, the Delhi Jal Board's (DJB) teams started spraying anti-foaming solutions near Okhla.
As per the DJB officials, nearly 12-15 tonnes of a diluted anti-foaming agent will be sprayed and the exercise will continuetill Chhath.

Meanwhile, parts of Delhi were enveloped by a thick layer of smog and the air quality was "very poor" on Sunday.
As per the Central Pollution Control Board's (CPCB) data, the national capital's Air Quality Index (AQI) was measured at 369 at 9 am on Saturday (Nov 2).
