Aligarh mob lynching: Police book victim, eight others for ‘dacoity’, know all details of case
A mob allegedly killed Mohammed Farid alias Aurangzeb in the Mamu Bhanja locality of Aligarh
In a major twist in Uttar Pradesh's Aligarh mob lynching case, police on Saturday (Jun 29) booked the dead victim and eight others under charges for dacoity. Alynching incident was reported on June 18 when a mob allegedly killed Mohammed Farid alias Aurangzeb in the Mamu Bhanja locality of Aligarh over suspicion of theft. Police had later arrested six people in connection with the case. But now 10 days later, more developments have emerged that may change the direction of the investigation altogether.
Dacoity charges against victim, others
The FIR against the nine people was filed by the wife of Mukesh Mittal, one of the six people who had been arrested by police. Mohammed Farid allegedly breathed his last in Mittal's house only, who happens to be a cloth trader.
As per Mittal's wife Suman, at least eight to nine men barged into their house on June 18 and looted jewellery and cash at gunpoint. She also accused the men, including now-dead Farid of trying to molest her and other women in the house.
“After looting cash and jewellery, one of them directed others to escape, saying that he would follow them after checking more valuables were left in the house. When they were escaping, one among them fell on a staircase and was overpowered by my husband and the son while others, including the one left in the house, managed to escape,” the woman told the police.

Police's account
Police said Farid was attacked by Mittal family members and nearby residents as he tried to escape. In a video doing rounds on social media, a mob can be seen beating Farid with sticks, punches and kicks.
Later, a police officer can be seen carrying a seemingly unconscious Farid on his shoulders to the hospital where the doctors pronounced him dead.
Political controversy
The case has sparked a massive political controversy in a state with the highest number of Muslims in India. Opposition is demanding firm action against the mob that allegedly killed Farid whereas Hindu groups like Bajrang Dal are pressing the government, run by Bharatiya Janata Party's Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to stand with the Mittal family as they are the real victims in this case.
