Dr Mishra told WION: "As Covid has problems related to respiratory distress or breathlessness the cardiac events can be hidden in respiratory symptoms. Drugs taken for Covid and inflammatory states make the body more predisposed to heart rhythm disturbances and even stress can lead to poor pump function known as broken heart syndrome. Therefore virus itself or activated clot formation pathway or inflammation increases the risk of heart attack and cardiac arrest in Covid patients."&nbsp;

Dr Bharat Kukreti, Director and Unit Head- Cardiology, Paras Health, Gurugram, told WION: "Experts have long noted that those infected with the COVID-19 coronavirus, particularly those with pre-existing heart problems, have an elevated risk of heart attacks or strokes for up to a year following the infection. Post-Covid, there is a rise in these incidents due to direct damage to heart cells, causing inflammation and scarring, weakening the heart, and elevating the risk of irregular heartbeats and heart attacks.&nbsp;

Dr Kukreti explained that this happens when the heart pumps extra blood throughout the body in an effort to fight the infection, further adding that&nbsp;the virus can cause a systemic inflammatory response that damages blood vessels and raises the risk of blood clots, which can impede blood flow and result in heart attacks.&nbsp;

The World Health Organization's cancer agency recently warned that the number of new cancer cases will rise to more than 35 million in 2050, which is 77 per cent higher than the figure in 2022. Tobacco, alcohol, obesity and air pollution are key factors in the estimated rise of cancer cases, the WHO's International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said. "Studies predict that global breast cancer cases will reach nearly 2 million by 2030. In India, the incidence of breast cancer in females has increased by 39.1% over the last 26 years. According to 2020 data, breast cancer accounted for 13.5% (178,361) of all cancer cases and 10.6% (90,408) of all deaths in India," Dr Kaur added.&nbsp;

Dr Kaur weighed in on the holistic approach to breast cancer care. She said that the treatment for breast cancer involves using medical measures to cure or alleviate a condition.&nbsp;

"Survivorship, which runs alongside treatment, aims for an improved quality of life. In the context of cancer care, survivorship covers the health and life of a person with cancer from diagnosis to end of life. It includes the lasting physical, social, mental, and financial effects of cancer beyond diagnosis and treatment completion. It also deals with issues like post-treatment follow-up, potential recurrences, second cancers, and overall quality of life," she said.&nbsp;

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness of the need for a holistic approach to breast cancer care, extending beyond medical interventions. Organisations and healthcare providers in India are increasingly focussing on providing comprehensive support services that address the multifaceted needs of individuals grappling with breast cancer, Dr Kaur said.&nbsp;

She said that vaccination against HPV is recommended between 11-13 years of age ideally before the first sexual contact to protect&nbsp;and prevent against these cancers.&nbsp;

Education enables women to make correct health decisions and community outreach programme&nbsp;help debunk myths and remove stigmas linked with cervical health, said Dr Radhika. She further state that the preventive&nbsp;measures extend beyond medical interventions.&nbsp;

Preventive measures include:&nbsp; 
1. Routine Screening: Women must prioritise routine pap smears and HPV tests for early detection.&nbsp;

The CDC said on Friday that from July 7-11 last year, it received reports of two patients in different states with a TB diagnosis following spinal surgical procedures that used bone allografts containing live cells from the same deceased donor.&nbsp;

The statement added that as these cases (in 2023) represented a second outbreak, the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) worked with the tissue establishment to determine that this product was obtained from a donor different from the one implicated in the 2021 outbreak and learned that the bone allograft product was distributed to 13 health care facilities in seven states - California, Louisiana, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Texas, and Virginia.

The statement said that eight hospitals and five dental offices in these seven states received 50 bone allograft units from this product lot from February 27–June 20 last year. On July 12, a notification was sent to these states.&nbsp;

Upon contacting the health facilities, officials learned that including the two previously reported cases, 36 total patients had undergone procedures in which the product was used.

"As of December 20, 2023, five of the 36 recipients had received a diagnosis of laboratory-confirmed TB disease, including four that were culture-confirmed," the statement said.&nbsp;

The CDC recommended that all exposed patients receive prompt tuberculosis treatment, and no additional people died.

Dr Sandhya Rani, Sr Consultant - Obstetrics &amp; Gynaecology, Aster Women and Children, Bengaluru explains that for a lucky few — around 17 per cent, period pain is minimal. Around 50-90 per cent face moderate pain, and roughly 5-10 per cent face severe pain.

To help men understand the pain women go through, Dr Rani quotes John Guillebaud, a University College London reproductive health professor, who in a 2018 article said that patients described menstrual cramping pain as "almost as bad as having a heart attack."

<h2>How can women deal with dysmenorrhea, aka period pain?</h2>

Dr Gaana Sreenivas, Consultant - Obstetrician &amp; Gynaecologist, BirthRight by Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Bannerghatta, Bengaluru suggests that first and foremost women must reduce stress, and improve their mental and physical health. Deep breaths, meditation, or yoga are good options to do this. Furthermore, exercise, drinking soothing teas like chamomile, fennel, and ginger tea can also help, she said.

However, she warns that caffeine can make cramps worse, and instead recommends decaf for coffee lovers.

Alternatively, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can help alleviate menstrual cramps. These help by reducing inflammation and thereby easing the pain. However, these drugs must be taken under medical supervision.&nbsp;

Applying heat can also help&nbsp;calm period cramps, "a&nbsp;hot bag is a lifesaver," she says, adding "Good emotional, social, physical, and psychological support is a must to tide over the phase of period pains".

<h2>How much bleeding is normal?</h2>

Typically, a woman loses between 20 to 80 millimetres of blood, equivalent to one and a half shot glasses during a normal menstrual cycle.&nbsp;

However, as with pain, this can vary from person to person. Those, with heavy menstrual flow, can lose much more than 80 ml. This can be due to a variety of factors "ranging from non-cancerous uterine growths like fibroids or polyps to more serious conditions such as uterine or cervical cancer," states Dr Rani.

Taking about the condition in India's capital New Delhi, Dr Singh said, "The high level of pollution affects everyone, but it's particularly tough on those with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and kids. However, individuals with respiratory conditions, the elderly, and children are especially vulnerable to its adverse effects."&nbsp;

In New Delhi, the recent levels of pollution have reached alarming heights, raising serious concerns for the well-being of the residents. As winter descends upon the region, the situation becomes worse. The pollution is caused&nbsp;by a combination of factors, including stubble burning, atmospheric changes, and more.&nbsp;

Airborne particles or pollutants found in haze, smoke, and airborne dust, pose serious air quality issues. And while air quality affects everyone, to some, the effects are far more adverse than others.&nbsp;

A report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) on May 4, 2023, revealed that asthma affected an estimated 262 million people in 2019 and caused 455,000 deaths. It stated that most asthma-related deaths occur in low- and lower-middle-income countries, where under-diagnosis and under-treatment is a challenge.&nbsp;

Dr Arunesh Kumar, Senior Consultant and Head, of Respiratory Medicine, Paras Health, Gurugram, told WION that when a person inhales these dangerous particles and compounds, it can cause or worsen pre-existing respiratory illness.&nbsp;

Dr Kumar said, "The hazardous elements of air pollution are especially dangerous for respiratory conditions such as interstitial lung disease, asthma, bronchitis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). For those with respiratory illness, breathing becomes more difficult as a result of the inflammation and irritation caused in the airways."&nbsp;

Gaseous pollutants&nbsp;can aggravate respiratory symptoms, including dyspnoea and coughing. He said, "Long-term exposure to these gases can damage the airways, increasing the risk of respiratory infections in people."&nbsp;

"Having an action plan ready in consultation with your doctor, an inhaler by your side – specifically in the case of asthmatics and taking regular inhalation therapy as prescribed by your doctor is critical," Dr Khanna added.&nbsp;

"To further manage your condition more effectively, monitoring your lung health with a peak flow meter can be an added layer of precaution," he added.&nbsp;

He stressed that basic measures like trying to maintain healthy air quality in your home, reducing time spent outdoors, reducing strenuous, outdoor exercise, and maintaining a safe distance from pollution hotspots can help manage conditions as well.&nbsp;

Dr Joshi also said that for very preterm infants, total parenteral nutrition might be necessary, delivering essential nutrients intravenously. "This method carries risks like bloodstream infections and is therefore administered in a protocolised manner in Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units only," she said.&nbsp;

To support the mothers, supporting mothers can provide expressed breast milk, which may be the most important intervention available for preterm infants.

Experts have noted that feeding with expressed human milk reduces the risk of serious infection, which is a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in preterm infants in developing countries.&nbsp;

Dr Joshi said that most term babies require about 85 to 100 calories per kilogramme of body weight, but preterm infants need more, they mostly require slightly higher energy, 105-135 kcals per kilogramme per day. "These extra calories help the baby catch up to reach a healthier height and weight," she said, further adding that caloric intake is important as premature infants require more calories than full-term babies to support their rapid growth.&nbsp;

"A higher intake of protein is also vital for the development of organs and muscles. Fats play a critical role in brain development and are often supplemented in preterm infants to ensure adequate growth. Vitamins and minerals are required in greater amounts due to the accelerated growth rate of preterm infants, particularly for bone development," Dr Joshi told WION.&nbsp;

For Marc Gauthier, everyday activities were a challenge. Having to endure Parkinson’s disease for nearly three decades, taking just a step forward seemed a bigger task for the 63-year-old Frenchman from Bordeaux as one could imagine.

But now he is able to walk for several kilometres without falling over and can perform everyday tasks like any other human being.

It’s all thanks to a special implant that stimulates nerves in his spine.

“Walking in a store would be really difficult, impossible before, because of the freezing of gait that would often happen in those environments. And now, it just doesn’t happen anymore. I don’t have freezing anymore,” Gauthier, who lives near Bordeaux, France, said in a news briefing, speaking in French that was translated to English.

Gauthier is the first person with advanced Parkinson’s to be fitted with experimental spinal cord neuroprosthesis to correct walking disorders.

Step by step, he said, it has helped him get his stride back.

The study, which details how the neuroprosthesis works by targeting specific areas of the spinal cord with electrical stimulation, was published on Monday in Nature Medicine journal.

“Addressing deficits of gait and balance in Parkinson’s disease is extremely challenging. These deficits can be very heterogenous. They can be variable across patients. They can affect walking but also symmetry, balance, posture,” Dr Eduardo Moraud, an author of the study and researcher at Lausanne University Hospital in Switzerland, said during the news briefing.

“The neuroprosthetic approach that we have developed here allows for the first time to target and address these problems individually in a highly specific manner for each patient,” Moraud said.

“It operates in real time, and importantly, it is complementary to other existing therapies.”

After surgery to fit the device, Marc had weeks of rehabilitation to programme it, using feedback sensors on his legs and shoes.

Neurosurgeon Jocelyne Bloch, who implanted Marc's device&nbsp;around two years ago, said the technology and procedure were similar to that which had helped some spinal-injury patients for many years.

Hygienic food and beverages: Consume food and beverages only from trusted, hygienic sources to reduce the risk of infection.

Disinfect drinking water: Use appropriate methods to disinfect drinking water based on availability, ensuring it is safe for consumption.

Properly wash raw foods: Wash raw foods thoroughly before consumption to eliminate any potential virus-contaminated particles.

Hand hygiene: Regularly wash hands with soap and water before and after meals to minimise the chances of viral transmission.

Dr. Sushrut Singh highlighted that there are primarily four types of hepatitis viruses. "Hepatitis A and E cause acute illness while Hepatitis virus B and C cause Chronic Hepatitis and Cirrhosis," he said.&nbsp;

Hepatitis A and E: Dr. Singh noted that these viruses cause acute illnesses and are usually self-limiting, meaning they resolve on their own. Symptoms may include low-grade fever, body pain, fatigue, and jaundice. While severe liver infection or failure may require hospitalisation, most cases do not require admission, he adds.&nbsp;

Hepatitis B and C: These viruses can cause chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis. Unlike Hepatitis A and E, they don't typically cause acute disease. Patients at risk for Hepatitis B and C include intravenous drug abuse, individuals with high-risk sexual behavior (unprotected sex with multiple partners), patients requiring dialysis or recurrent blood transfusions, infants born to infected mothers, and partners of infected patients.

Dr. Singh said that early diagnosis is essential in managing hepatitis effectively.&nbsp;

"Simple blood tests can be conducted to detect the presence of the viruses, while liver function tests help assess the severity of liver damage. Advanced tests such as ultrasound and FIBROSCAN are necessary for evaluating chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis," he said.&nbsp;

What is syphilis

Known as a bacterial infection that is commonly spread through sexual contact, it usually starts with a painless sore on the genitals or mouth – direct contact with the sores spreads the infection. As detailed by the Mayo Clinic, after the initial infection, the syphilis bacteria can remain inactive in the body for decades before becoming active again.

Syphilis spreads from person to person via skin or mucous membrane contact with these sores. Early syphilis can be cured, sometimes with a single shot (injection) of penicillin. The cause of syphilis is a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. The most common way syphilis is spread is through contact with an infected person's sore during sexual activity. How to avoid syphilis

Contrary to popular perception and according to the US CDC, syphilis cannot be spread through toilet seats, door knobs, or even from sharing utensils. The only way to avoid syphilis is by avoiding contact with the sores. One should use condoms if one is sexually active. However, it is important to note that contact with the sores in areas not covered by a condom can also spread the disease. 
 
If a child experiences any unusual discharge, sore or rash — particularly if it is in the groin area, then one has to be cautious and take the child for a checkup.

Can it reoccur?

Once cured, syphilis doesn't return on its own. However, you can become reinfected if you have contact with someone's syphilis sore. The biggest risks are having unprotected sex or with multiple partners, or if one is infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. Treatment can help prevent future damage but can't repair damage already done.

CMS will cover the drug for patients who join a national registry. Patients, doctors, and caretakers are concerned about the registration process and timeline. CMS's Coverage Criteria Alzheimer's Association has expressed their disagreement with the criteria implemented by CMS. According to them, it is unnecessary and could hinder patients' medical coverage. They believe that individuals with Alzheimer's disease should have unrestricted access to FDA-approved therapies, similar to patients with cancer, heart disease, and HIV/AIDS. The Alzheimer's Association believes these life-changing treatments must be available to all. The coverage delays and restrictions also have financial implications. Despite the CMS's reservations, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) will provide lecanemab for patients within the VA system. According to lecanemab's current label, doctors must monitor patients using MRI imagery to detect signs of ARIA. Unfortunately, Alzheimer's disease has no cure till now. Its advanced stages can lead to severe brain function loss, dehydration, malnutrition, and fatal infections. Lecanemab is not a cure for Alzheimer's disease. But it is an FDA-approved treatment that changes the course of the disease for people in the early stages. According to reports, manufacturers of lecanemab set the price at $26,500 a year.
