These findings came from examining a 34-year-old woman who had recurring cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) on her forehead, despite undergoing surgeries and immunotherapy.&nbsp;A deeper genetic analysis revealed something surprising: the beta-HPV had actually integrated itself into the DNA of the woman’s tumor and was producing viral proteins that helped the cancer thrive. Eduardo Augusto Fernandes Nilson, the study&rsquo;s lead investigator, from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation in Brazil, said that additives like sweeteners and flavourings also have a harmful impact, not just the high levels of fat, salt, and sugar.
The highest proportion of premature deaths &ldquo;attributable to UPF consumption&rdquo; was in England at 13.8%, followed by 13.7% in the US and 10.9% in Canada.&nbsp;
Death rates are highest in the countries where the population gets the largest amounts of total energy from eating UPF.
In England that is 53.4%, according to the National Diet and Nutrition Survey undertaken in 2018-19. But it is even higher in the US&mdash;54.5%.

&ldquo;UPFs affect health beyond the individual impact of high content of critical nutrients&mdash;sodium, trans fats, and sugar&mdash;because of the changes in the foods during industrial processing and the use of artificial ingredients, including colourants, artificial flavours and sweeteners, emulsifiers, and other additives and processing aids, so assessing deaths from all causes associated with UPF consumption allows an overall estimate of the effect of industrial food processing on health,&rdquo; said Nilson.

At present the burden of ill health from UPF is highest in high-income countries, but it is steadily growing in low- and middle-income nations also, he added.
The authors urged governments worldwide to tackle ultra-processed foods with bold measures, like increasing taxes on them and tighter regulations on their sales in schools and workplaces to reduce sales.

A large population suffers from fatty liver disease, which is also known as hepatic steatosis. It usually occurs when excess fat builds up in liver cells. It mostly affects adults, but when a rise in cases among children is alarming. Fatty liver disease in children is also known as pediatric non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). As it became a growing concern, WION spoke to experts to get valuable insights.&nbsp;
Dr Vittal Kumar Kesireddy, who is Consultant and In-Charge, Department of Paediatrics, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, told WION, "It affects almost 10 per cent of children in India as per today's guidelines. It occurs because of fat deposits in the liver causing inflammation and then causing liver damage."&nbsp;

Symptoms are often asymptomatic; in some cases, fatigue, abdominal discomfort or pain and enlarged liver are observed. Patients with such condition have symptoms of "fatigue, shortness of breath and discomfort over the liver region over the abdomen," Dr Kesireddy said, further adding that mostly it is "genetic and environmental factors causing the liver disease".&nbsp;
Dr Suresh Raghavaiah, HOD &amp; Sr Consultant - HPB &amp; GI Surgery, &amp; Multi-organ Transplant Surgery, Gleneagles BGS Hospital Kengeri, Bengaluru, told WION, "In my previous decade of practice, fatty liver used to always be limited to, I would say, middle-aged and older age patients who were suffering from diabetes. But in the past two to three years, what I have seen is that teenagers at the youngest 20 years of age are coming with fatty liver disease."&nbsp;

"The SECOND one is I think all the youngsters nowadays are leading a sedentary lifestyle. Everybody has a desk job and absolutely no option for physical exercise. And to burn off the calories they are consuming," Dr Raghavaiah added.&nbsp;
"And the THIRD one, obviously, is the pub culture, I would say, of Bangalore. And I'm sure we all know that Bangalore has probably one of the highest density of pubs. And everybody drinks drinks in the weekends," Dr Raghavaiah said.

<h2>What are the reasons and risk factors? </h2>
Genetic predisposition, obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes and high cholesterol are some of the major risk factors. Dr Kesireddy said that in genetics, there are nucleotide polymorphisms that are associated which go by genetic lineage.&nbsp;In the environmental factor, it's all because of high sugar intake causing insulin resistance and then leading to liver damage. Mostly fructose metabolism in the liver can lead to increased lipogenesis which leads to liver damage. 
Dr Raghavaiah explained that when you eat high-calorie food&nbsp;and not have any exercise, it converts all these sugars to fat. And that's why we have fatty liver disease. Now the problem is if this is left untreated, the fatty liver disease leads to inflammation of the liver and then scarring of the liver. "And if this continues to progress, it will lead to cirrhosis of the liver. And unfortunately, it cannot be diagnosed early. And that is the pain of fatty liver disease unless we really look for it, for the fatty liver disease," Dr Raghavaiah said.&nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Children should stay away from packed fruit juices or other sugary&nbsp;items</h2>
Dr Kesireddy said that liver diese happen through packed fruit juices or other sugary items which we take in normal practices. He added, "A sedentary lifestyle is the biggest life risk factor for children who are not obese in 9 to 11 years."&nbsp;

Dr Raghavaiah explained a case he was treating. "A potential donor we saw, I think, as early as about three months back. He was a 22-year-old techie. He actually came forward to be a liver donor for his dad who needed a liver transplant. All of his blood tests, everything was normal and we were hopeful that he would be a good donor. But the moment we did an ultrasound, he was found to have a grade 2 fatty liver.&nbsp;
This came as a huge surprise, not only for him and his family. But obviously, for his dad who was waiting for the transplant and was hoping that his son could donate. But this is the highlight that even young girls nowadays have fatty liver disease which is going unnoticed. But thankfully, we were able to counsel him and put him on a strict diet, calorie-restricted diet.&nbsp;

<h2>Regular screening is a must</h2>
Experts have said that initially screenings are done with the lipid profile, random blood sugar and ultrasound&nbsp;abdomen. They added that alkaline phosphatase levels and liver biopsy can confirm the diagnosis of liver disease in paediatrics.&nbsp;
When it comes to treatment, and reversing of liver disease we do mostly by giving them a balanced diet chart and asking them to go for physical activities. These lifestyles can change the fat buildup so the inflammation comes down and it may not lead to permanent scarring in the liver. Adding supplements like vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acid-related foods and probiotics which improve gut health can improve the liver thing by not accumulating the toxic products in the liver thank you.&nbsp;
Dr Raghavaiah said, "Simple changes in our lifestyle including you know avoiding unhealthy foods getting a bit of exercise I would say what's been prescribed with about 150 minutes of vigorous exercise a week is what is needed and avoiding alcohol and even if you can't avoid at least moderating your alcohol intake is going to go a long way in preventing fatty liver disease."&nbsp;
Dr Raghavaiah said, There are a lot of medications, but in order to treat fatty liver disease but as the old saying goes prevention is always better than cure."

The researchers have analysed health records of more than 280,000 older adults. They found that those who received a largely discontinued shingles vaccine called Zostavax were 20% less likely to be diagnosed with dementia over the next seven years, as compared to those who went without.
As quoted by The Guardian, Pascal Geldsetzer, at Stanford University, said: "For the first time we are able to say much more confidently that the shingles vaccine causes a reduction in dementia risk. If this truly is a causal effect, we have a finding that's of tremendous importance."&nbsp;

The researchers used data from a vaccine campaign that was implemented in Wales over ten years ago. According to public health regulation, individuals born on or after September 2, 1933, were eligible for the Zostavax vaccination starting on September 1, 2013, whereas older people were not.&nbsp;
"We show that receiving the zoster vaccine reduced the probability of a new dementia diagnosis over a follow-up period of seven years by 3.5 percentage points, corresponding to a 20 per cent relative reduction," the study quoted the authors as saying.

While for patients suffering from certain chronic diseases like diabetes, the NIH recommends consulting the doctor before fasting, for Thyroid it notes that there are "minimal data suggesting any adjustment in the treatment" during Ramzan.

WION connected with Dr Piyush Lodha, endocrinologist, Ruby Hall Clinic, to find what (if any) precautions need to be taken if a person with thyroid -hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, or an autoimmune thyroid condition like Hashimoto's or Grave's disease-observes Ramzan fast.

He recommends that people with thyroid should consult a doctor before fasting.

Furthermore, he said that those taking drug therapy must make sure that "proper administration of your thyroid medications" is undertaken "to keep your hormones under control".
According to NIH, proper administration of medicine "is achieved if it is taken half an hour before Sehr".

WION reached out to specialist doctors to get valuable insights on obesity and related issues. Dr Sandeep Aggarwal, who is the chairman of Manipal Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric, GI &amp; Robotic Surgery, told WION, "Obesity is typically assessed using Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference."&nbsp;
Dr Sandeep Aggarwal added that for Indians, a BMI above 27.5 kg/m2 is the cut-off for the diagnosis of obesity. The classification is as follows: 
-27.5 to 32.5: Mild obesity (Class 1)
-32.5 to 37.5: Moderate obesity (Class 2)

Dr Deep Kamal Soni, Consultant - Gastroenterology, Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Vasant Kunj, told WION that obesity is a "serious health condition" that increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, joint problems, and even mental health struggles.&nbsp;
"It happens when the body stores excessive fat due to factors like poor diet, lack of exercise, genetics, or underlying medical conditions," Dr Soni added.&nbsp;
Dr Kalyan Kumar Gangopadhyay, an endocrinologist at CMRI Kolkata, said, "Earlier,&nbsp;obesity&nbsp;was only associated with diabetes, but now we realise that it is a polyorgan disorder, characterised by endocrine and metabolic disorders. Over-fat deposition in and around the throat can result in obstructive sleep apnea, decrease blood oxygen levels, and lead to heart disease and hypertension."&nbsp;
Dr Gangopadhyay further added that hormonal disturbances caused by obesity are also the underlying cause of many endocrine disorders that have to be evaluated with caution by an endocrinologist or metabolic health specialist.&nbsp;

"With the right approach, mindset, and determination, it is possible to overcome obesity and lead a healthier life," Dr Aggarwal added.&nbsp;
Dr Gangopadhyay said that advances in medical science have introduced new ways of treating&nbsp;obesity&nbsp;and diabetes with medications that target both diseases with their profound interdependence. He said, "In contrast to the past, when there were limited treatment options, newer anti-obesity medications and diabetes drugs with weight-reduction properties are available today, which provide more efficient and tailored treatments."&nbsp;

<h2>What is bariatric surgery, and how can it help?&nbsp;</h2>
Dr Sandeep Aggarwal said that besides lifestyle modifications such as diet management and exercise, OMM (obesity medications) and bariatric and metabolic surgery are also options, particularly for those who do not respond to other options/interventions.&nbsp;
Bariatric surgery involves minimally invasive procedures (laparoscopic surgery) on the stomach alone or both the stomach and small intestine. The most common procedure is Sleeve Gastrectomy, which involves the removal of around 3/4th of the stomach. This essentially results in reduced appetite and early satiety.&nbsp;
"Moreover, various hormonal changes that occur result in remission of diabetes in approx. 80% of patients, along with other metabolic benefits. It results in the restoration of lifespan to near-normal as patients with obesity have a decreased life expectancy by up to nine years in comparison with the normal-weight population. Bariatric surgery also lowers the risk of 13 types of cancer and provides improvement in fatty liver disease, including cirrhosis. ‘Serious health condition’: Experts reveal how obesity can be reversed

A 23-year-old woman died while dancing on the stage during a wedding ceremony in Madhya Pradesh's Vidisha in India. The woman, identified as Parineeta, had gone to Vidisha to attend her cousin's wedding. She hailed from Indore. Media reports have claimed that she suffered a heart attack while dancing and died immediately on the stage.&nbsp;
The incident reportedly happened on Saturday (Feb 8). Some relatives, who were doctors by profession, attempted to revive her using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) but failed. She was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.&nbsp;

Dr Dhall told WION, "It is very unfortunate that young life has been lost recently while dancing on stage. This has become quite common in recent years more so after COVID. According to reports, the incidence is one in 100,000 dies of sudden cardiac death each year across the world."&nbsp;
"The most common causes of sudden death are plaque rupture leading to heart attack, hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias like Ventricular Fibrillation, Brugada syndrome, WPW syndrome, Long Q T syndrome and some congenital heart defects," Dr Dhall explained.&nbsp;

Rising obesity, diabetes, smoking, and genetic predispositions lead to early plaque buildup in arteries, he said, further adding that activities like dancing, high-intensity workouts, or sports can trigger arrhythmias in individuals with hidden heart conditions.&nbsp;
Excessive consumption of caffeine, energy drinks, or drugs can cause dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities, Dr Mishra said.&nbsp;
<h2>How to prevent such deaths?&nbsp;</h2>
Dr Dhall explained ways to prevent such deaths. He said, "We advise screening procedures like ECG and Echocardiography in younger patients who are doing aggressive physical activities."&nbsp;
"These simple tests can guide us on whether a person is at risk of sudden cardiac death and whether they require specialised tests further to substantiate the diagnosis," he added.&nbsp;
Dr Dhall noted that they advise screening relatives of the patient who had sudden death as the disease runs in families and can prevent further deaths in the same family.

The Live Science report said that the man was diagnosed with Xanthelasma in which harmless, yellow deposits of cholesterol build up under the surface of the skin.&nbsp;

The commission also defined two kinds of obesity- clinical obesity and pre-clinical obesity.
Clinical obesity: The commission defined this obesity as a chronic, systemic illness characterised by alterations in the function of tissues, organs, the entire individual, or a combination thereof, due to excess adiposity.
Clinical obesity can lead to severe end-organ damage, causing life-altering and potentially life-threatening complications such as heart attack, stroke, and renal failure.
Pre-clinical obesity:&nbsp;The commission said that pre-clinical obesity is a state of excess adiposity with preserved function of other tissues and organs and a varying, but generally increased, risk of developing clinical obesity and several other non-communicable diseases including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and certain types of cancer.

Weight-loss drugs Ozempic and Wegovy have become popular worldwide. Many people have also reported suffering some serious side effects. However, quitting the drugs can also lead to severe health issues, as per a study.&nbsp;

The two drugs contain semaglutide, which is the active ingredient in them. Researchers found that most people who stopped taking it regained nearly two-thirds of the weight they had lost. They also saw deteriorating health issues, such as higher blood pressure and cholesterol and increased risk of heart disease, Daily Mail reported.

Wegovy and Ozempic trigger weight loss by mimicking the actions of a hormone called GLP-1 in the brain, making one feel full and helping regulate appetite.&nbsp;

The study done by Northwestern University researchers states that it is not clear how stopping GLP-1 RAs affects heart health in the long term. However, it might increase the risk of cardiovascular disease.

The report was published in JAMA.&nbsp;

The researchers stated, "Nearly 30 per cent of individuals discontinued semaglutide in the SELECT trial, with real-world estimates for GLP-1 RA discontinuation in the range of 50 to 75 per cent at 12 months."

Notably, semaglutide took the market by storm and was found to be effective in treating diabetes and obesity. Other research also suggested that taking these drugs can also lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke.

Now researchers are saying it is important to understand whether taking the drugs offers any lasting health benefits or whether the downsides of stopping the drugs outweigh the pros of taking them.&nbsp;

The researchers did not say whether people need to take these drugs forever in order to ensure continued benefits. But their findings hint that long-term use might be needed to maintain the benefits.

"It's crucial to emphasise that asthma is not a significant barrier, as it can be easily managed with the right medication and inhalation therapy", Dr Sandeep Nayar, Principal Director and HOD, Centre for Chest and Respiratory Diseases, BLK-MAX Super Speciality Hospital, New Delhi told WION. "I always tell my patients that with proper treatment, they can be just as efficient and energetic as anyone else."&nbsp;

"Asthma should not prevent anyone from maintaining a normal routine or even excelling beyond others. It is a misconception that asthma hinders physical activities like running. Dr Nayar said that about the US star sprinter, he discovered that he had struggled with asthma since childhood. At the age of five, he couldn't even eat without coughing and relied on a nebuliser to manage his symptoms. Despite these challenges, he has now won an Olympic gold medal in one of the most demanding events.

1) Reduce your risk of getting an asthma attack by avoiding triggers which are identified prior for example pollens, dust and many more.&nbsp; 
2) Take regularly prescribed medications by your pulmonologist.&nbsp; 
3) Pre-treat with inhalers prior to exercise as advised by your pulmonologist.&nbsp; 
4) Warm up for 15 to 20 minutes before exercise to reduce the chances of tight airways during exercise. 
5) Cover your nose and mouth with a scarf when exercising outdoors in cold temperatures.&nbsp;Limit exercise or strenuous activities outdoors when the air quality is unhealthy (orange) and avoid outdoor activities when the air quality is red, purple or maroon.&nbsp; 
6) Remember to include a cool-down period.&nbsp;

What is Graves' Disease, the condition afflicting Star Wars actress Daisy Ridley

The coronavirus pandemic changed us. It impacted us in ways we don't even realise. Millions across the world were affected&nbsp;and lost their lives&nbsp;ever since the coronavirus infection spread and was declared a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020. Bereaved family members have reported psychological distress and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. But that's not it, Covid continues to affect us. Some of us are still suffering it, in the form&nbsp;of Long Covid.&nbsp;

Firstly, let's understand what is Long Covid. It is defined as a chronic condition that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and is present for at least three months, sometimes more than a year and sometimes even more than that.&nbsp;

A Montreal resident shared his story with WION. He talked about his journey describing the challenges he faced living with Long Covid for three years. Marc-Olivier Vinet, who hails from Quebec, had been living with Long Covid symptoms for more than three years.&nbsp;

"I had a lot of dizziness. I couldn’t continue to drive because even just walking, doing sports… everything… I was just dizzy," said Marc.&nbsp;

Researchers have found that people who have recovered from Long Covid can suffer relapses or flare-ups from new viral infections, it can even be from cold, flu and other viral pathogens.&nbsp;

The most common symptoms of Long Covid include extreme tiredness (fatigue), feeling short of breath, problems with your memory and concentration, heart palpitations, dizziness, joint pain and muscle aches. In some cases, symptoms like loss of smell, chest pain or tightness, depression and anxiety have also been reported.&nbsp;

Marc, who grew up as an athlete, was first diagnosed with the virus in March of 2020, and had mild symptoms for about 10 days but eventually felt like himself. But the virus came back nearly a year later in 2021. He said he felt so ill that eventually he had to take a semester off from university and move back in with his parents.&nbsp;

In the aftermath of his second diagnosis of Covid, Marc said, "After a couple of weeks, I started to feel really really tired. I thought oh maybe I caught another virus, but the feeling of tiredness never went away. I started having palpitations. I was also unable to do sports at that time because I was out of breath."&nbsp;

From consulting his family doctor to getting opinions from a physiotherapist, cardiologist as well as a neurologist, Marc said he visited at least 10 different medical professionals.&nbsp;

But nothing helped. The experts were only able to investigate the problems as individual health concerns.&nbsp;But then he came in contact with Canadian physician&nbsp;Dr Adeel Khan, who is the CEO and Founder of&nbsp;Eterna Health. Dr Khan said that because Long Covid is not a system-based problem, hence, it isn't affecting just one organ.&nbsp;

"There's no specialist in the traditional model that can assess multiple organs. You need a doctor who understands the whole body and how it is integrated and connected to one another to treat Long Covid," said Dr Khan.&nbsp;

Marc said he had investigated regenerative medicine and chose a new exosome and peptide therapy at Eterna Health, which helped him immensely. He started feeling like himself again after only a few weeks.&nbsp;

"I go to all of my classes. Brain fog has practically disappeared. Just being able to do sports again, being active, seeing friends… it's just amazing," said Marc.&nbsp;

Researchers are trying to solve the mystery of Long Covid, even while&nbsp;it is extremely difficult to ascertain the exact number of Long Covid cases across the world because of under or over-reporting.&nbsp;

A review article published in 2023 in Nature Reviews Microbiology found that at least 65 million people have had Long Covid worldwide and that is likely an underestimate. However, the estimate was refuted by The Lancet as it called out the method in an article published this year on March 23, 2024.&nbsp;

The report titled, 'The importance of reporting accurate estimates of long COVID prevalence', stated the researchers agree that "more work is needed to recognise, treat&nbsp;and support patients with Long Covid, underpinned by high-quality, coordinated, multidisciplinary research. Perpetuating scientifically invalid estimates of Long Covid burden undermines this mission," the article said.&nbsp;

Bereaved family members have reported psychological distress and symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress. But that's not it, Covid continues to affect us. Some of us are still suffering it, in the form of Long Covid. Firstly, let's understand what is Long Covid. It is defined as a chronic condition that occurs after SARS-CoV-2 infection and is present for at least three months, sometimes more than a year and sometimes even more than that. A Montreal resident shared his story with WION. He talked about his journey describing the challenges he faced living with Long Covid for three years. Marc-Olivier Vinet, who hails from Quebec, had been living with Long Covid symptoms for more than three years. "I had a lot of dizziness. Experts tell when to seek help Researchers have found that people who have recovered from Long Covid can suffer relapses or flare-ups from new viral infections, it can even be from cold, flu and other viral pathogens. The most common symptoms of Long Covid include extreme tiredness (fatigue), feeling short of breath, problems with your memory and concentration, heart palpitations, dizziness, joint pain and muscle aches. In some cases, symptoms like loss of smell, chest pain or tightness, depression and anxiety have also been reported. Marc, who grew up as an athlete, was first diagnosed with the virus in March of 2020, and had mild symptoms for about 10 days but eventually felt like himself. But the virus came back nearly a year later in 2021. He said he felt so ill that eventually he had to take a semester off from university and move back in with his parents. In the aftermath of his second diagnosis of Covid, Marc said, "After a couple of weeks, I started to feel really really tired. I thought oh maybe I caught another virus, but the feeling of tiredness never went away. I started having palpitations. I was also unable to do sports at that time because I was out of breath." From consulting his family doctor to getting opinions from a physiotherapist, cardiologist as well as a neurologist, Marc said he visited at least 10 different medical professionals. But nothing helped. The experts were only able to investigate the problems as individual health concerns. But then he came in contact with Canadian physician Dr Adeel Khan, who is the CEO and Founder of Eterna Health. Dr Khan said that because Long Covid is not a system-based problem, hence, it isn't affecting just one organ. "There's no specialist in the traditional model that can assess multiple organs. You need a doctor who understands the whole body and how it is integrated and connected to one another to treat Long Covid," said Dr Khan. Marc said he had investigated regenerative medicine and chose a new exosome and peptide therapy at Eterna Health, which helped him immensely. He started feeling like himself again after only a few weeks. "I go to all of my classes. Brain fog has practically disappeared. Just being able to do sports again, being active, seeing friends… it's just amazing," said Marc. Regenerative medicine can be defined as the process of replacing or "regenerating" human cells, tissues, or organs to restore or establish normal function. However, the same therapy doesn't need to help other people the same way and an expert's advice is required. Testing and diagnosis are key factors in determining the Long Covid cases and analysing the course of treatment. Long Covid cases worldwide Researchers are trying to solve the mystery of Long Covid, even while it is extremely difficult to ascertain the exact number of Long Covid cases across the world because of under or over-reporting. A review article published in 2023 in Nature Reviews Microbiology found that at least 65 million people have had Long Covid worldwide and that is likely an underestimate. However, the estimate was refuted by The Lancet as it called out the method in an article published this year on March 23, 2024. The report titled, 'The importance of reporting accurate estimates of long COVID prevalence', stated the researchers agree that "more work is needed to recognise, treat and support patients with Long Covid, underpinned by high-quality, coordinated, multidisciplinary research. Perpetuating scientifically invalid estimates of Long Covid burden undermines this mission," the article said.
