Sigourney Weaver to receive Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Venice Film Festival

Three-time Oscar-nominated actress Sigourney Weaver will be honoured with the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 81st Venice International Film Festival. The 74-year-old has given several ground-breaking performances in big-budget action franchises like Aliens and Avatar, comedy like Ghostbusters and Galaxy Quest, biopics such as Gorillas in the Mist, and arthouse dramas including Rampart andMaster Gardner.
According to Variety, Weaver expressed her gratitude, stating, “To be gifted this award is a privilege I share with all the filmmakers and collaborators I have worked with throughout the years. I proudly accept this award in celebration of all who have helped bring these films to life.”
Alberto Barbera, the festival’s director, praised Weaver's impact on cinema, saying, “An actress of the calibre of Sigourney Weaver has few rivals. Strengthened by her significant theatrical training, she won over the great film-going public with *Alien*, directed by Ridley Scott, soon becoming an emblematic figure of the 1980s.”
Barbera highlighted Weaver's role in redefining the action genre, noting her portrayal of a strong heroine who broke away from traditional male-dominated roles. He also mentioned her collaborations with esteemed directors such as James Cameron, Paul Schrader, and Ang Lee.
“The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement is just recognition for a star who has built bridges between sophisticated art-house cinema and movies that engage with the public in a frank and original way, all the while remaining true to herself,” Barbera added.
