A new study has found that high blood pressure is casually associated with the most common heart rhythm disorder. The findings of the study were published in the `European Journal of Preventive Cardiology`.

Study author Dr Georgios Georgiopoulos of King`s College London, UK and National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece said, "Establishing that elevated blood pressure causes atrial fibrillation provides further impetus for public health strategies aimed at improving blood pressure control in the general population and for individual efforts to keep levels in check."

Atrial fibrillation is the most common heart rhythm disorder, affecting more than 40 million individuals globally.
People with the disorder have a five times greater risk of having a stroke. Previous studies have shown an association between high blood pressure and developing atrial fibrillation, but there was no strong evidence of direct causality.

To investigate whether blood pressure has a direct impact on the risk of atrial fibrillation, the researchers conducted a naturally randomised controlled trial - called Mendelian randomisation. They used data from the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) on blood pressure and atrial fibrillation which included more than one million individuals of European ancestry - of which 60,620 had atrial fibrillation and 970,216 did not.

The first step was to identify 894 genetic variants associated with blood pressure. Next, the researchers analysed which of those variants play a role in atrial fibrillation. To conduct the naturally randomised controlled trial, the 894 genetic variants were randomly allocated to all participants at conception, giving each individual a blood pressure level. The investigators then analysed the association between blood pressure and atrial fibrillation.

Elevated blood pressure was associated with an increased risk of atrial fibrillation. Specifically, 1 mmHg rises in systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and pulse pressure were associated with 1.8 per cent, 2.6 per cent, and 1.4 per cent relative increases in the risk of atrial fibrillation, respectively.

Dr Georgiopoulos noted, "The results provide strong evidence of a causal relationship between blood pressure and atrial fibrillation. Using genetic information in the analyses minimises the likelihood of reverse causality (i.e. that atrial fibrillation causes high blood pressure) or that other trait linked with atrial fibrillation (confounders) were responsible. Our study showed that the relationship was not driven by other conditions including coronary artery disease and obesity."He concluded, "Our findings confirm the hypothesis that atrial fibrillation is preventable.

This indicates that strict blood pressure control could be an effective strategy to stop atrial fibrillation and its complications, which include stroke, heart failure, dementia, and depression."

Early exposure to nutritious foods may help children develop more healthful eating habits, but package labels can make it difficult for parents to understand what they are feeding their children, according to a new study.
The novel study was published by Elsevier in the `Journal of Nutrition Education and Behaviour`.Researchers compared products for infants and toddlers, examining aspects of vegetable and fruits contributing to the ingredient lists. They reviewed, for example, whether the vegetable or the fruit in the product was a puree or a powder, and where it was listed among the ingredients and product name.

The goal of the research is to help parents understand how the front-of-package labels indicate the contents of infant and toddler foods. By better understanding packaging and labels, parents can make more informed decisions regarding food purchases for their children."Our hope is that nutrition educators will note differences between the ingredients list and the front label of the package.

Many parents use the front of the package to decide on their purchases. So, it`s important for nutrition educators who are well-informed to help parents navigate this occasionally challenging infant and toddler food product market," explained Mackenzie J. Ferrante, PhD, RDN, Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition, Colorado State University, Fort Collins, CO, USA.

This study`s findings demonstrate that inconsistent information exists on some commercial infant and toddler food packages. Food preferences develop early for children by exposure to flavours.

Thus, it is important that nutrition educators and healthcare professionals help parents navigate the marketplace. Their work can help parents improve their children`s lifelong health through better nutrition as infants and toddlers.

"We want the front of the packages - where those vegetables might be listed - to accurately represent the primary ingredients, and even the flavor, of the product. We want to promote more transparency so parents and caregivers can buy the food they want their children to learn to eat at the family table. Let`s make it easier for them to do that," said Susan L. Johnson, Ph.D., Department of Pediatrics, Section of Nutrition, University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, Aurora, CO, USA.

Cancer is an unnatural growth of cells that wrecks the healthy environment of the body. The complications associated with it is not because of the disease, but due to the delayed diagnosis as the symptoms are mostly unclear at times.

India has recorded a 333 per cent increase in online consultations with oncologists between January and December 2020, as per Practo`s latest insights report. Of the total online consultations, 40 per cent came from non-metro cities while 60 per cent from metro cities. Non-metros recorded a steep 932 per cent increase in the number of online consultations, while the metro cities grew by 410 per cent.

The findings indicated increased awareness about the disease and improved access to cancer specialists online, especially in non-metro cities - from 5 per cent in 2018 and 20 per cent in 2019 to 40 per cent in 2020.

Meanwhile, a new observation was made in 2020 - the top searched queries were different in different parts of the country. People in non-metro cities enquired more about types of cancer such as bladder, thyroid, ovaries, and anal. In metro cities, on the other hand, the majority of queries revolved around more common types of cancer (like blood, breast, cervical, and oral).

On World Cancer Day marked across the globe on February 4 every year, Oncologist at Practo shares a list of commonly ignored symptoms, which could be warning signs of cancer. Cancers are painless when they start and so they get ignored by the patient and doctors alike.

Anaemia: Tiredness in cancer is usually due anaemia (lack of blood) and deficiency of nutrition. The cancer drains most of nutrients from the body in its race to grow rapidly. Also there is bleeding from cancer tissue that makes one anaemic.

Blood while passing stool: Very often, this is due to piles or similar causes. However, colon cancer and rectum cancer can also cause this. If a person happens to find blood in stool, it is wise to do colonoscopy to look inside of the colon. Cancer of colon can cause change in bowel habit (like alternating constipation and diarrhoea)

Blood in urine: This always requires further tests. Cancer of the kidney or urinary bladder or prostate can result in blood in urine. The worst part is this bleeding can be irregular. This infrequency makes patients ignore this symptom. Even one episode of blood in urine needs through examination.

Bleeding in between periods (women): Any bleeding that does not follow the usual pattern of menstrual period is a warning sign. Cancer of the uterus or cervix can cause these kinds of symptoms. Patients with cervical cancer also bleed after sexual intercourse.

A patch or wound inside mouth: Oral or mouth cancers are common in India. These cancers start as a patch or wound and progress over months. If diagnosed early they can be treated effectively.

Lump or swelling: Cancers of breast and limb begin as painless lumps or swellings and progress over months. Any newly appearing lumps or swellings should be thoroughly examined.

Loss of weight without trying: A sudden weight loss when you are not dieting needs investigations. As cancer consumes most of the nutrition that you take, you tend to lose it.

Loss of appetite and bloating food: This could be because of obstruction to bowel or because of a cancer secreting its toxic substances. Thorough examination is needed to reach a diagnosis.

Lymph node enlargement: Lymph nodes are present everywhere in the body and function as filters. Most of the time they enlarge due to infections. The cancer cells also get filtered in these nodes and are trapped. They grow in these nodes and the nodes enlarge because of this growth.

Trouble swallowing or vomiting after taking food are both warning signs of a cancer in the digestive tract. These need to be evaluated with endoscopic tests to identify the cause. Some patients have only persistent heartburns which are misdiagnosed as gastritis and treated only for months before correct diagnosis reveals itself.

Pain is the last feature of cancer. Do not wait for it.

Cancer of colon can cause change in bowel habit (like alternating constipation and diarrhoea) Blood in urine: This always requires further tests.

World Cancer Day: 10 symptoms people should not ignore

US vice president Kamala Harris has been criticised for wearing designer brand Dolce and Gabbana during her recent outings. In the past, D&G has courted controversy over its clothing as well as it advertising which many have termed as racially offensive.

Harris wore a polo-necked wool jumper from the luxury brand during a lunch with President Joe Biden recently. For the swearing-in ceremony of the treasury secretary, Harris chose a grey checked blazer and trouser suit, and a chevron jumper when Biden signed executive orders in the White House.
Vittora Vignone, who runs the popular Kamalas Closet handle on Instagram, slammed the outfits in a series of post. "Was it an oversight on the part of her team?" she asked.

“It’s possible but also incredibly sloppy. They could and should be better, especially after the triumphs of last week. The timing of this so soon after her inaugural choices championed lesser-known American designers of colour is awful no matter how you look at it.”

For her inaugural events in January, Harris chose to wear three black-run labels. Her choice was lauded by one and all. But her decision of choosing Dolce and Gabbana for her recent official engagements sparked a conversation on social media.

“Someone seriously needs to tell her team about Dolce and their problematic issues with race,” wrote one on Vignone's post. “I’m stunned she would wear them.”

D&G had shared a with Melania Trump and faced criticism for dressing her in all black to meet the pope and attend a G7 summit.

“I don’t think it’s a good idea for Kamala to wear so many new expensive items during her first week in office,” Vignone also added. “I also don’t think she should be wearing non-American designers, especially when there are so many American brands to choose from … she and her team should care about the impact her choices have. For example, she could lift up a smaller or more affordable business instantly.”

Trained in Milan, up-and-coming Spanish designer Nicolas Montenegro has dressed Beyonce and Kylie Minogue, but with the pandemic, he's gone back home to his village to launch his own brand.

Thanks to the internet and air links "there is no need to live in a big city," the lean 31-year-old told AFP at his atelier in Lantejuela, a village of some 3,800 residents about an hour's drive from the southern city of Seville.

Sketches and fabric samples cover one table while wedding dresses are piled high on another in a room decorated with family photos. His three employees, all local residents, are busy cutting fabric.

Going back to his village, which is surrounded by asparagus farms, is part of a global trend.

A combination of the pandemic, shifting attitudes and technological advances that make it easier than ever to work remotely, are prompting waves of people to move out of large cities and permanently relocate to more sparsely populated areas.

After studying at Milan's prestigious Istituto Marangoni, Montenegro worked for four years at Italian fashion house Dolce & Gabbana where he dressed big names including Madonna, Beyonce, Kylie Minogue and Melania Trump.

Then in 2018, he moved to Barcelona to work at Yolancris, where he designed the spectacular pleated tulle dress worn by Spanish urban music singer Rosalia to the Latin Grammys that year.

But when the pandemic hit in March and a strict national lockdown was imposed in Spain, Montenegro decided to move back to Lantejuela to be closer to his father who had cancer, and who died in November after catching Covid-19.

- Online fashion shows -
Encouraged by his father, Montenegro launched his own brand and first collection of wedding dresses called "Abril", or "April".

His sober, elegant gowns which mix vintage classics with a daring splash of exquisite cotton lace and dramatic bows have sold in Spain, Britain and Greece for 2,500 euros ($3,000) a piece.

Montenegro is now preparing an autumn/winter ready-to-wear collection.

This time, his inspiration is drawn from the exotic tapestries decorated with tigers, deer and peacocks that his father brought back after his military service in Western Sahara in 1971, at the time a Spanish colony.

Montenegro plans to promote his collection in Madrid as well as online, a medium which has more scope than traditional fashion shows which "are over very quickly".

"You don't have time to enjoy it, and then everyone forgets," he added.

"I launched the wedding dress collection online, I made promotional footage and each dress had its own video," said Montenegro, calling this approach much more "functional".

- 'Helping us a lot' -
His venture has boosted the local economy, which has been hit hard by the pandemic despite being home to generations of expert seamstresses who make flamenco dresses and children's clothing.

"He is helping us a lot because there is nothing else" here, said Estefania Ponce, a 38-year-old mother who works at the atelier.

Unlike his Spanish peers who have found success abroad with unisex clothes for men, Montenegro -- who as a child liked dressing dolls -- focuses on women's fashion.

He says his role model is his friend Alejandro Palomo, the 28-year-old designer behind the popular Palomo Spain brand which mixes Spanish traditions with modern twists.

Thanks to Palomo, Spanish designers "are once again being looked at abroad," said Montenegro.

Palomo also has an atelier in his hometown of Posadas, located about 75 kilometres (45 miles) from Lantejuela.

Talk about dedication! An aerobics instructor unwittingly captured the first moments of Myanmar's dramatic coup in her dance video on Monday morning. The viral video shows the woman doing her dance routine in the capital Naypyidaw in front of what appears to be the entrance of Myanmar's parliament.

Seconds later, as she continues with her workouts, the video shows black SUVs drive up behind her to security checkpoint on the road leading to the Assembly of the Union complex.

The dancer, identified as Khing Hnin Wai, continues to do her workout routine in front of the camera, unaware of the convoy behind her.

At one point, as the tempo of the music increases, she even makes small punching motions – as series of black cars behind her halt briefly. Then, as she moves side to side, men behind her can be seen rushing to open the barricade and let the cars through.

Khing Hnin Wai posted the video around 3 am on Tuesday confirming that the video was real and revealed that she had been filming dance videos outside the assembly for the last 11 months.

Christie`s will present 20th Century Modern Masters from a Private French Collection in the 20th Century Art Evening Sale and The Art of the Surreal Evening Sale, to be held on 23 March.

The collection is comprised of eight works by Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet, Max Ernst, Jean Fautrier, Fernand Leger and Joan Miro.

This exceptional group offers an insightful view into the crucial dialogues that connected avant-garde artists working in Europe and America throughout the 20th Century, highlighting the friendships, artistic innovations and the exchange of ideas that shaped the century, both before and after the Second World War.

Dating from 1913, Leger`s Deux femmes couchees illustrates his bold, graphic style of cubism (estimate: £1,200,000-1,800,000), which resonates with the formal structures of Dubuffet`s post-war Paris `Circus` and `Hourloupe` styles, both hybridised in Paysage du Pas-de-Calais III (1963, estimate: £2,500,000-3,500,000). Radical mixed-media impasto is employed to very different ends in Dubuffet`s Le Vase de Barbe (1959, estimate: £2,000,000-3,000,000), Max Ernst`s Aux 100,000 colombes (1925, estimate: £1,200,000-1,800,000) and Fautrier`s Pièges (1946, estimate: £1,000,000-1,500,000). Finally, close links can be seen between Calder`s Submarine Christmas Tree (1947, estimate: £4,000,000-6,000,000) and the intuitive, whimsical visual language of surrealists such as Miro.

Anika Guntrum, International Director, 20th - 21st Century, Christie`s: "20th Century Modern Masters from a Private French Collection reflects the pioneering spirit of the collection with works that, seen together, create a carefully constructed dialogue between movements, artists and continents. This spirit is echoed in the eight paintings presented as a major highlight of Christie`s 20th Century season in London. The scope of the collection provides insight into those artists - Calder, Dubuffet, Ernst, Fautrier, Leger and Miro - whose vision and innovation defined the 20th century and whose legacy and influence is seen in the artists practising today. We are thrilled to offer these works in the Spring season of 20th Century art."

Keith Gill and Tessa Lord, Co-Heads of Sale, 20th Century Art Evening Sale, Christie`s: "Together with three major works from an important Swiss Surrealist collection, we are thrilled to present another exquisite collection, from France on this occasion, to the London market in 2021. We are confident that this opening season will see international collectors centre around this significant moment in the art world calendar. We look forward to engaging established and new audiences alike in our live-streamed auctions and events, providing opportunities to explore artworks that defined the trajectory of artistic practise throughout the 20th century."

Country singer-songwriter Kris Kristofferson has quietly retired from touring after more than 50 years in the music business.

The news, buried in a news release earlier this week, comes a year after the 'Me and Bobby McGee' singer played his last gig on the Outlaw Country Cruise in the Caribbean in January 2020.

As the coronavirus pandemic shuttered live music venues last year, Kristofferson`s decision not to return to the road felt natural, his longtime manager Tamara Saviano told Variety on Thursday.

"It was just sort of a slow changing of the guard thing," Saviano said. "To us on this side of the fence it was an organic, normal, `things are changing` thing. Kris is aging; Kris is 84. It didn`t feel like such big news to us."

The announcement came in a news release that said a new management company would represent Kristofferson`s business affairs, alongside his son John, after Kristofferson "offically retired in 2020."

Kristofferson rose to fame in the 1970s in Nashville and wrote classics including "Help Me Make it Through the Night" and "For the Good Times."

He was also a sought-after actor, winning a Golden Globe for his lead role in the 1976 version of "A Star is Born" opposite Barbra Streisand.

Kristofferson began experiencing debilitating memory loss in his mid-70s which his wife in 2016 said had been diagnosed as a result of Lyme`s Disease, and which had much improved.

One of the most influential labels, if not the reigning brand in Indian fashion, Sabyasachi, enters into a strategic partnership with Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail Limited (ABFRL) by which Aditya Birla Fashion has acquired 51 per cent stake in the brand for an undisclosed amount.

The namesake label of designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has been a leading retailer and couturier in Indian fashion since 1999 with a strong presence across the country and internationally. From humble beginnings in Kolkata, designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has grown his brand from strength to strength, being the proud owner of what can only be called as India’s first ‘Luxury Fashion House’ in the real sense of the term.

On Wednesday, 27th January, ABFRL announced that its platform will complement brand Sabyasachi on its journey to becoming a global luxury house out of India. This aim is to build a large ethnic wear business over the next few years to complement its strong and diverse portfolio in western wear segment of the Indian apparel market. ABFRL is part of a leading Indian conglomerate, The Aditya Birla Group, with a revenue of Rs. 8,788 Cr in FY19-20, it is India’s first billion-dollar pure-play fashion powerhouse with an elegant bouquet of leading fashion brands and retail formats.

CEO and Founder of Sabyasachi Brand, Mr. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, said: “Over the course of the last couple of years, as my brand evolved and matured, I began searching for the right partner in order to ensure continuity and long-term sustainable growth. I am honoured and excited to have found that partner in Mr. Kumar Mangalam Birla and ABFRL. Aligned in our vision, and committed to excellence, we will work together to grow a truly global luxury brand out of India.”

Sabyasachi Mukherjee has always been ahead of the curve, and from the very beginning has strived to create a brand which in addition to the creative side of fashion, focused on the business of fashion. Sabyasachi has emerged as one of the most influential cultural voices in the country — shaping modern fashion and lifestyle while celebrating artisanal craftsmanship and traditional techniques in each and every product.

The brand straddles categories such as apparel, accessories and jewellery and has a strong franchise in India, US, UK and the Middle East. Today, with solid footing in the domestic retail landscape, several major global collaborations, and international flagships opening soon, Sabyasachi continues steadfastly on its path to becoming the first voice of global luxury out of India.

Commenting on the partnership with the ace designer, Ashish Dikshit, Managing Director, ABFRL adds: “We believe that over the next few years, ethnic wear is going to be an increasingly important category as young and confident Indians rediscover their culture and heritage. The Sabyasachi brand, through its emphasis on excellence in design and craftsmanship has set new benchmarks and captivated the imagination of the sophisticated global Indian consumer. We are proud to partner Sabyasachi in its journey to become the only global luxury brand from India. We see a ‘Made in India’ global brand like Sabyasachi occupying the pinnacle of our ethnic wear portfolio. Over the next few years, ABFRL intends to craft a portfolio that addresses the entire gamut of ethnic wear segments: value, premium and luxury.”

The proposed acquisition is subject to necessary statutory approvals and signing of definitive agreements. One can only wait and watch this unique story of Indian excellence unfold in the months to come.

Billie Eilish has often talked about her body insecurities and they have affected her body image.

Last October, a much-talked-about photo of Eilish circulated online due to the fact that the star was simply wearing a tank top that was more form-fitting than her usual attire. In a new Vanity Fair cover story, Eilish reflected on that pap picture.

"I think that the people around me were more worried about it than I was because the reason I used to cut myself was because of my body. To be quite honest with you, I only started wearing baggy clothes because of my body," she said. Describing the growth she's had with her body image, Eilish, who has an auditory processing disorder and was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome, said she's in a healthier mindset these days compared to her early teen years.

"I was really, really glad though, mainly, that I'm in this place in my life, because if that had happened three years ago, when I was in the midst of my horrible body relationship—or dancing a ton, five years ago, I wasn't really eating. I was, like, starving myself," said the five-time Grammy winner, who suffered a growth-plate injury that axed her dance dreams.

"I remember taking a pill that told me that it would make me lose weight and it only made me pee the bed—when I was 12. It's just crazy. I can't even believe, like I—wow. Yeah," Eilish said before circling back to that pap photo: "I thought that I would be the only one dealing with my hatred for my body, but I guess the internet also hates my body. So that's great."

If your teenage child has memories of a happy childhood, they are less likely to indulge in drinking or substance abuse and enjoy learning, a new study suggests.

The findings, published in the journal Addiction Research and Theory, indicated that positive attitudes towards the past, present and future put adolescents at lower risk of alcohol use, binge drinking and marijuana.

"Many teenagers also aren`t engaging with online learning during Covid-19 or have lower engagement levels," said researcher John Mark Froiland from Purdue University in Indiana, US.

"But they are more likely to be enthusiastic learners and not use drink and drugs if teachers take time to build more positive relationships with them. They can help students see that everything they are learning is truly valuable. Parents have a role to play too," Froiland added.

For the study, the team assessed 1,961 students at a high school and half (53 per cent) of the pupils included in the study were female.

The researchers looked at responses from pupils where they rated how nostalgic they were of their childhood, current happiness levels in life and how much they look forward to future happiness.

They also analysed marijuana and alcohol habits over the past 30 days including binge drinking, and average academic grades. They analysed motivation levels, and behaviour in lessons such as how much teenagers paid attention and listened.

Statistical techniques were used by the researchers to assess the associations between all these different factors and establish the key predictors for alcohol and marijuana misuse.

The researchers are calling on teachers and parents to help students develop more positive mindsets and become motivated to learn so they are less likely to binge drink or use marijuana.

The aim of this study was to establish how substance misuse and behaviour towards learning are affected by students` feelings about the past, present and future.

On Monday, hours before he addressed the nation on the eve of India's Republic Day, President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated a portrait of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The portrait was to commemorate Netaji's 125th birth anniversary which was on January 23.

The images of the inauguration were shared from President Kovind's official Twitter handle. But the post sparked a debate on Twitter almost immediately with many alleging that the portrait did not bear any resemblance to Netaji.
