South African firefighters launched a fresh search for victims as they went inside the five-storey building in Johannesburg, which was engulfed in fire, killing 74 people, including 12 children. The officials have said that they might find more bodies and they want to be sure that no one has been left behind.

Thembalethu Mpahlaza, who is the head of forensics services in Johannesburg's Gauteng province, said a total of 74 bodies were recovered, 24 female, 40 male and 10 "burnt beyond recognition".

South African firefighters launched a fresh search for victims as they went inside the five-storey building in Johannesburg, which was engulfed in fire, killing 74 people, including 12 children. The officials have said that they might find more bodies and they want to be sure that no one has been left behind. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa condemned the incident and called it a "tragedy" as reports emerged that bodies were discovered piled up at a security gate that was closed, preventing people from escaping the blaze. Thembalethu Mpahlaza, who is the head of forensics services in Johannesburg's Gauteng province, said a total of 74 bodies were recovered, 24 female, 40 male and 10 "burnt beyond recognition". Meanwhile, Olivier Faure, who is the leader of the opposition Socialists, also slammed the remarks, calling the words "inappropriate remarks by an inappropriate minister". Faure said that the minister "should manage his libido elsewhere than in government".
The United Nations Security Council on Thursday renewed the mandate for its peacekeeping force in Lebanon for another year after tense debate around the troops' freedom of movement within the country.

The vote, which was originally scheduled for Wednesday but was postponed for further negotiations, came in under the wire Thursday only a few hours before the mission's previous authorization was set to expire.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in place since 1978, is tasked with creating a buffer between Israel and Lebanon, which are technically at war.

Thursday's resolution passed with 13 votes in favour and Russia and China abstaining, and keeps the force in place until August 31, 2024.

The mandate is largely identical to last year's agreement on allowing freedom of movement for the approximately 10,000 peacekeepers stationed in the country, a point which has been contested both by the Lebanese government and the powerful pro-Iranian Hezbollah group.

The text "urges all parties... to ensure that the freedom of movement of UNIFIL in all its operations and UNIFIL's access to the Blue Line in all its parts is fully respected and unimpeded."

In a letter sent to the UN, the Lebanese government had also called for a return to the 2021 terms of the force's mandate, which placed less emphasis on the mission's ability to move independently.

"(Thursday's) text unfortunately did not reflect all of our concerns," Lebanon's UN representative Jeanne Mrad said.

UN renews Lebanon peacekeeping mission for another year

Wild boars in the forests of southern Germany are known to have high levels of radioactive caesium. The levels are high enough that they have been deemed unsafe to eat.

Some reports have even claimed that they sometimes bite and charge at humans with their tusks. They also appear to be highly protective of their young ones.

The alert over them being radioactive has become a bigger concern, which has been attributed to the Chornobyl disaster in 1986. The levels of radioactivity have fallen in other animals, but still persist in the boars, which has been termed the "wild boar paradox".

According to the new research, the Chornobyl disaster doesn't appear to be the only reason, as the nuclear weapons tests from the mid-20th century are also responsible.

Scientists have said that both sources have led to contamination of the boars through their diet and the hunting of tusked wild boars (Sus scrofa) for their meat has reduced because they may appear healthy, but some of them have dangerously high levels of radioactive caesium.
The study was published in the journal American Chemical Society on Wednesday (August 30). It found nuclear weapons testing across the globe released enough fallout into the atmosphere to expose the wild pigs.

The study further added that "more than ever, with threats of nuclear strikes or accidental releases in the course of the Russo-Ukrainian war, it is now imperative to be able to identify the source of any release... and evaluate their environmental consequences."
