In a newly released video of Russian mercenary boss Yevgeny Prigozhin, who died last week in a private plane crash that killed all 10 onboard, is seen speaking about speculations over his wellbeing and possible threats to his security. He said that he was in Africa.

In the short video published by the Grey Zone Telegram channel which is linked to his Wagner Group, Prigozhin is seen sharing: "For those who are discussing whether I'm alive or not, how I'm doing - right now it's the weekend, second half of August 2023, I'm in Africa."

"So for people who like to discuss wiping me out, or my private life, how much I earn or whatever else - everything's ok," he added.

While decoding the details of the video, it was found that it was indeed filmed in Africa as his camouflage attire, hat, and the watch on his right hand, matched his appearance in a video released on August 21, which he also claimed was filmed in Africa. WION can't independently verify the video.

The reference to "weekend" in the video implied the latest clip must have been made on August 19 or 20, just three or four days before Prigozhin and other top Wagner figures and bodyguards were killed in the crash.

Kremlin has denied any involvement but there have been claims and counterclaims. However, Prigozhin's comments in the video reflect his his awareness of the risks to his life.

Some experts have said that whoever or whatever was behind the crash, his death would rid Putin of someone who had mounted the most serious challenge to the Russian leader's authority since he came to power in 1999. Notably, in June this year, Prigozhin staged a coup against Putin which eventually failed.

Speeding train kills 5 railway track maintenance workers near Turin in north Italy

A new coronavirus (COVID-19) variant, BA.2.86 (nicknamed 'Pirola' on social media) has been reported in the United States and some other nations. It is said to be highly mutated from more recent versions and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has added it to it watch list after it was added to the WHO's SARS-CoV-2 variant monitoring list.

Covid may have subsided, but the fear among people still resides with the emergence of variants and sub-variants of the deadly virus. The first known case of Covid was reported in China towards the end of 2019, and when it started to spread, it was declared a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020.

The outbreak became a pandemic just a few weeks later, and caused havoc on mankind, killing millions of people and leaving many more reeling with long-Covid.

Different variants such as Delta and Omicron, led to deadly Covid waves, and experts have raised concerns over this new variant also. As per reports, seven confirmed cases of the 'Pirola' variant were reported by CDC as of August 19.

The variant has been detected in other countries as well, such as Denmark, Israel, South Africa, Portugal and the United Kingdom.

What is 'Pirola' variant of COVID-19?

BA.2.86 (or the Pirola) has caused concerns among some virologists as according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's August 23 risk assessment, some said that it has a large number of mutations, and it may be able to bypass immunity from the vaccine or recent infection with a different variant.

A report by The Wall Street Journal mentioned that the positive cases include people who haven't travelled recently. It indicates that there is community transmission. Concerns have also been raised as the variant has also been detected in wastewater in the US.

According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, one case of BA.2.86 was detected in Washtenaw County, and reportedly impacted an older adult who showed "mild" symptoms that didn't immediately require hospitalisation. So far there's no update on the health of the person.

The WSJ report stated that scientists are not aware of the origin of the variant as it contains so many mutations. But they believe it developed over months in an immunocompromised person with a chronic infection.

The Indian government told the Supreme Court on Tuesday (August 29) that the union territory status of Jammu and Kashmir is not a "permanent thing". It also said that the government will make an elaborate and "positive" statement on the restoration of statehood to J&K.

The Centre's response was conveyed to India's top court by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, after a five-judge constitution bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud.

Estonia's Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is reportedly under pressure to step down in the aftermath of reports that her husband has part ownership of a company that has kept operations in Russia even after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. The matter regarding her husband's business will now be discussed by a parliamentary committee.

Estonian President Alar Karis, who is the leader of the Social Democrats, said on Monday (August 28) that the scandal has impacted Estonia's credibility in its interaction with allies.

ERR reported this week that Stark Logistics, an Estonian company in which Kallas' husband Arvo Hallik indirectly owns a 25% share, has been supplying an aerosol container factory in Russia, owned by another Estonian company.

It has earned 1.5 million euros from serving the factory since the beginning of the war, Estonian daily Eesti Paevaleht reported.

Karis said: "The business activities of Prime Minister Kaja Kallas' family members vis-a-vis Russia have raised many questions in the media and in society and have put the spotlight on the head of the government and the values that Estonia must follow."

He also called on the prime minister on Thursday to provide a detailed explanation, but the company is partly owned by Kallas's husband Arvo Hallik.

But the opposition Centre Party said it was starting discussions on a no-confidence motion against Kallas, while another opposition party Isamaa said she had "no other option but to resign immediately".

Pope Francis is facing criticism for telling Russian youths to not give up their "legacy" as heirs of a "great, enlightened Russian empire", referring to the heirs of past tsars such as Peter the Great. Notably, President Vladimir Putin hails them and holds them up as an example to justify the "special military operation" in Ukraine.

On Friday, Pope Francis told young Russians, who were gathered for the All-Russian Meeting of Catholic Youth in St. Petersburg that "never give up this legacy, you are the heirs of the great Mother Russia, go forward with it".

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited his Navy headquarters with his daughter, state media reported on Tuesday (August 29). He called for boosting the navy, claiming that the country's waters brimmed with "the danger of a nuclear war".

He also slammed the trilateral cooperation between the "gang bosses" of the United States, South Korea and Japan, who are holding joint naval drills.

They conducted exercises in international waters off South Korea's southern Jeju island. South Korea's military said the main purpose was to improve their ability to detect and track targets and share information in the event of provocation by Pyongyang.

The Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise will play out through August 31 and will feature drills to deal with emergencies on the Korean Peninsula. But it always infuriates Pyongyang.

Kim calls for boosting North Korea's navy as waters brim with 'danger of nuclear war'

France said it will ban children from wearing the abaya in state-run schools. Abayas are loose-fitted and full-length robes, that are mostly worn by some Muslim women. The decision has garnered both applause and criticism. The government spokesman said that wearing abaya dresses is a "political attack".

Mixed reactions to the ban

French education minister Gabriel Attal said that the long, flowing dresses that originated in the Middle East would no longer be allowed in schools in the new term because they violate secular laws.

He also said that the government was clear that abayas "did not belong in schools" and that "schools are being tested". The minister added, "These last few months, violations of our secular rules have considerably increased, particularly with regard to the wearing of religious clothing such as abayas or qamis which have appeared - and remained - in some establishments."

Meanwhile, a government spokesman Olivier Veran said it was "obviously" a religious garment and "a political attack, a political sign" which he saw as an act of "proselytising" or trying to convert to Islam.

"School is secular. We say it in a very calm but firm way: it is not the place for that (wearing religious clothing)," he told the BFM TV channel.

As quoted by the news agency Reuters, sociologist Agnes De Feo said the ban was "dangerous" since it would only lead to Muslim people feeling even more stigmatised.

During a conversation with France Inter radio, Sophie Venetitay, the head of the secondary school teachers union SNES-FSU, said the ban should not distract people from seeing more important issues schools are facing: "It should not mask all the problems schools have during this back-to-school season."

Eric Ciotti, who is the head of the conservative Les Republicains party, welcomed the move. Ciotti stressed that his group had repeatedly asked for it.

On the other hand, Clementine Autain, an MP for the hard-left France Insoumise, slammed the decision. She called the decision by the government "clothes police" and a move "characteristic of an obsessional rejection of Muslims".

The SNPDEN-UNSA union of school principals welcomed the move, saying what it needed above all was clarity, its national secretary, Didier Georges, told Reuters.

Georges said, "What we wanted from ministers was: yes or no? We're satisfied because a decision was made. We would have been equally happy if the decision had been to authorise the abaya."

A history of strict dress rules in France

In French schools, women have long been banned from wearing the headscarf. The European nation has enforced a strict ban on religious signs in state schools since 19th-century laws removed any traditional Catholic influence from public education, but it, to some extent, struggled to update guidelines for the Muslim minority.

In 2004, France banned headscarves in schools, which was followed by thousands of people, many of them women wearing headscarves, marching on the street to protest the law banning Islamic coverings and other religious apparel in public schools. The polls stated that a substantial majority of French citizens supported the prohibition.

French secular rules, which are aimed at ensuring equality in public institutions, forbade schoolchildren from wearing "signs or outfits by which students ostensibly show a religious affiliation" in 2004. This includes large Christian crosses, Jewish kippas and Islamic headscarves.

It is now illegal for students to display overt religious or political affiliation through the use of items like the Jewish skullcap, the Islamic hijab, or oversized Christian crosses.

In 2010, France passed a ban on full-face veils in public and the nation brought in a complete ban on clothing that includes full-face coverings, including the burkha and niqab. These cannot be worn in any public space in France and invite a fine of €150 ($162).

Such bans have remained a matter of controversy and the latest announcement, the decision to ban abayas, has sparked a new debate about France's secular rules and whether they are used to discriminate against the country's large Muslim minority.

Muslim population in France in 2023

According to the figures by the national statistics bureau, INSEE, Muslims made up 10 per cent of the French population in 2023. They represented 10 per cent of the French population in 2019 - 2020. A total of 29 per cent of the population, aged 18 to 59, declared themselves Catholic, 10 per cent Muslim, 10 per cent other religions and 51 per cent had no religion.

The report added that the "immigrants coming from traditionally Muslim countries are more engaged in religion," whereas those from European (with the exception of Portugal) or Asian countries reported being religiously affiliated less frequently.

"Only 20% of the Muslims regularly go to mosques," said INSEE. "Religion's place in identity is clearly most significant for Jews (54%) and Muslims (30%), compared to Catholics (6%), and has decreased among Muslims in 11 years."

Presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak said on social media, that "the Russians carried out a missile attack on the village of Gogoleve... in the Poltava region." He said the same on social media, adding that the victims were employees of a vegetable oil facility that was hit in the Myrhorod district.

Yermak wrote on Telegram that people were working the night shift. He also posted photos showing tankers engulfed in flames and the destroyed metal structures of the plant.

On the same day, Sergei Aksyonov, the Russian-appointed head of the region, wrote on Telegram that Russian air defences downed two Ukrainian drones over Russian-annexed Crimea.

He said one drone was downed in the northern part of the Black Sea peninsula, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and the other one in the west.

Ukraine also claimed on Monday that its troops had liberated the south-eastern settlement of Robotyne and were trying to advance further south in their counteroffensive against Russian forces, Reuters reports.

Ukraine claimed in recent weeks that its counteroffensive is underway which was launched in June after stockpiling Western-supplied weapons, building up assault battalions and working to degrade Russian positions. The war-torn nation also said that the nation was making advances on all fronts despite consistent Russian attacks.

A commander who led troops into Robotyne told Reuters last week that Ukrainian forces believe they have broken through the most difficult line of Russian defences in the south and that they will now start advancing more quickly.
