Spain's football federation (RFEF) has sacked Jorge Vilda, the coach of its World Cup-winning women's team, the RFEF said on Tuesday, 10 days after FIFA suspended its president for kissing national team player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth.

A new board formed after the suspension of RFEF President Luis Rubiales by soccer's world governing body FIFA over the allegedly non-consensual kiss during the World Cup victory celebration two weeks ago has terminated Vilda's contract.

In a statement that did not mention Hermoso, Rubiales or the scandal, the RFEF thanked 42-year-old Vilda for his "extraordinary sporting legacy.

"The coach has been key to the remarkable growth of women's football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings," the RFEF statement said.

The furore involving Rubiales has quickly spiralled into a national debate over women's rights and sexist behaviour.

Considered a close ally of Rubiales, Vilda had been under fire since last year after 15 players staged a mutiny calling for his resignation because of inadequate coaching methods and calling for conditions to match those of the men's squad.

Most of the players involved were cut from the squad even as some demands were met.

Danae Boronat, a sports presenter who interviewed Spain's leading female players for her book “Don’t Call Them Girls, Call Them Footballers”, said players accused Vilda of micromanaging, such as instructing senior players what to say in interviews.

Vilda and Luis de La Fuente, the men's national team manager, applauded Rubiales when he refused to resign on Aug. 25 but later issued statements condemning his behaviour.

Spain women's national team coach Jorge Vilda fired after kiss row

Social media company X, formerly known as Twitter, is facing accusations of helping Saudi Arabia commit grave human rights abuses against its users, which led to the arrest and persecution of critics, The Guardian reported citing a revised civil US lawsuit.

The allegations include disclosing confidential user data at the request of Saudi authorities at a much higher rate than it has for the US, UK, or Canada.

Areej al-Sadhan, whose brother was forcibly disappeared and later sentenced to prison in the aftermatch of infiltration of X by Saudi agents, has initiated the lawsuit.

The lawsuit indicates that the social media company's help was possibly driven by financial considerations as the Saudi government is a top investor in the company.

The focus of the lawsuit is on the events surrounding the three Saudi agents' intrusion into the California company in 2014 and 2015, two of whom pretended to be Twitter employees.

This invasion resulted in the arrest of Abdulrahman al-Sadhan's brother and the identification of thousands of anonymous Twitter users, some of whom were later reportedly detained and tortured as part of the government's campaign against dissent.

The new lawsuit describes how X was first viewed as a crucial platform for political movements during the Arab Spring, which caused the Saudi government to express alarm as early as 2013.

According to the revised lawsuit, "Twitter was either aware of this message – brazenly sent on its own platform – or was deliberately ignorant to it." So far, there are no official remarks from the company, or from X.

The lawsuit also states that Twitter had "ample notice" of security risks to internal personal data and that there was a threat of insiders illegally accessing it, based on public reporting at the time.

The lawsuit claims that the X "did not simply ignore all these red flags … it was aware of the malign campaign".

Myanmar's junta will likely hold elections in 2025, the news agency AFP reported citing party officials.

A coup d'état started in Myanmar on February 1, 2021, when democratically elected members of the country's ruling party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), were deposed by the country's military.

Democracy icon Aung San Suu Kyi was detained along with ministers and members of the parliament. Ever since Suu Kyi has been in custody and facing multiple charges.

To justify their coup in February 2021, the military junta used unsupported allegations of extensive election fraud in the 2020 elections, which Suu Kyi's NLD overwhelmingly won.

"Elections are likely to be held in 2025," a senior member of the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party told AFP on the condition of anonymity.

"We have a census-taking process in 2024. Because of the situation (in Myanmar) and that nationwide census process, next year is impossible," they said.

The report mentioned that a member of a junta-approved party said it was likely "elections will be held in early 2025", without elaborating.

Thirty-six political parties have been granted permission to take part in any future polls, the junta-stacked election commission said Tuesday.

It didn't reveal a date for when they would be held, but it told the news agency that seven had been approved to compete countrywide, and 29 on a regional level.

It also announced the scrapping of the first-past-the-post system and added that a proportional representation system would be used across the country.

Junta chief Min Aung Hlaing called for "necessary preparations" to be completed ahead of the national census in 2024, the state-backed Global New Light of Myanmar reported on Saturday.

Kremlin has 'nothing to say' on reports of Putin-Kim Jong Un summit

The U.S. military is in talks to develop a civilian port in the remote northernmost islands of the Philippines, the local governor and two other officials told Reuters, a move that would boost American access to strategically located islands facing Taiwan.

U.S. military involvement in the proposed port in the Batanes islands, less than 200 km (125 miles) from Taiwan, could stoke tensions at a time of growing friction with China and a drive by Washington to intensify its longstanding defence treaty engagement with the Philippines.

The Bashi Channel between those islands and Taiwan is considered a choke point for vessels moving between the western Pacific and the contested South China Sea and a key waterway in the case of a Chinese invasion of Taiwan. The Chinese military regularly sends ships and aircraft through the channel, Taiwan's defence ministry has said.

Marilou Cayco, the provincial governor of the Batanes islands, told Reuters in a message she had sought funding from the U.S. for the building of an "an alternative port" there, which was intended to assist the unloading of cargo from the capital, Manila, during rough seas in the monsoon season.

She said the plans were to build a port on Basco island, where local authorities say high waves often make the existing port inaccessible, and that a decision could be made in October.

The Philippines has in the past year almost doubled the number of its military bases that U.S. forces can access, ostensibly for humanitarian assistance, and also has thousands of U.S. troops in the country at any given time, rotating in and out for joint training exercises. China has said these U.S. moves were "stoking the fire" of regional tensions.

The Chinese Embassy in Manila did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the proposed port in Basco.

Two other Filipino officials, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to media, said U.S troops had visited Batanes recently to discuss the port.

One, a senior military official, said the Filipino armed forces were interested in radar and improving monitoring capabilities in the area.

Cayco confirmed the visit, saying they came "one time to assess" the proposed alternative port.

The move comes as Washington pursues closer ties with Asian nations to counter China in the Asia-Pacific region, including the Philippines, its former colony and treaty ally.

Kanishka Gangopadhyay, a spokesperson for the U.S embassy in Manila, said U.S. Embassy and U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) experts had been engaging the governor and local government, "at their request, to discuss ways USARPAC can support engineering, medical, and agricultural development projects in the province."

He did not mention the port specifically.

MARCOS INCREASES US ACCESS

Previous President Rodrigo Duterte had threatened to scrap the U.S.-Philippines alliance and realign the country with Beijing but relations between China and the Philippines have grown tense under the current president, Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Marcos, the son and namesake of the disgraced late strongman president, has sought closer ties with Washington, granting it access to four more military bases, including several close to Taiwan, though not in Batanes, and announced joint patrols in the South China Sea.

Marcos has said the bases under the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement (EDCA) could prove useful if China attacked Taiwan.

Security officials in Manila said they believed any military conflict in the Taiwan Strait would inevitably affect the Philippines, given its geographic proximity to Taiwan and the presence of over 150,000 Filipinos on the democratically-governed island.

Batanes also served as one of the training sites during this year's joint military exercises, known as Balikatan, which involved more than 17,000 Filipino and American troops, making it the biggest ever edition of the military drill.

At the time of the exercise, Cayco said she was seeking investment to build seaports and airports in the island province that is home to 18,000 people. The province could harbour Filipinos fleeing Taiwan if conflict breaks out there and residents have been worried about mounting tensions, according to local government officials.

The Philippines and China have also clashed in recent months over disputed waters in the South China Sea, with Chinese vessels firing water cannons on a Filipino vessel trying to send supplies to an outpost.

Cayco said she didn't have any conversation with the U.S. about EDCA or about radar installations.

She also said there had not yet been discussions about what access the U.S would have to the proposed port, but troops could use all ports in the area for regular military exercises like the Balikatan.

Jay Batongbacal, maritime affairs expert at the University of the Philippines, said the proposed port "would certainly be needed for the island’s defence in a worst case scenario."

"If I were a Chinese strategist, I would want to take the Batanes at minimum in order to ensure control of the Luzon straits and use the island to prevent the approach of adversary naval forces," he said.

Jay Batongbacal, maritime affairs expert at the University of the Philippines, said the proposed port "would certainly be needed for the island’s defence in a worst case scenario." "If I were a Chinese strategist, I would want to take the Batanes at minimum in order to ensure control of the Luzon straits and use the island to prevent the approach of adversary naval forces," he said. In the United Kingdom, a top children's doctor has issued a warning over the delay in a new vaccine to combat respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). claiming that the dire situation may lead to more babies and infants in need of hospital treatment this winter.

Dr Camilla Kingdon, who is the president of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health (RCPCH), told The Independent that she is frustrated as an RSV vaccine for babies has not yet been rolled out.

Dr Kingdon said: "We are frustrated [because] if we had acted sooner, we might have at least reduced the extent of the impact this winter and we have missed an opportunity there."

"One of the aspects of winter that always fills us with dread is that we know that we will end up having to stop elective surgical lists because our hospitals are at full capacity with all the infections that we see in winter," she said.

"You've got to get ahead of the game. We are really disappointed that the programme hasn't been rolled out in a way that is going to make an impact for this winter, because we have been talking about this endlessly, but there's been a delay in activating the programme," she added.

What is RSV?

RSV, which is a common and contagious virus that causes infections of the respiratory tract, affects both children and adults. Approximately, it causes 30,000 hospital admissions each winter and leads to dozens of deaths.

A last year's government report stated that Public Health England (PHE) estimated that over 60 per cent of children have been infected by their first birthday, and over 80 per cent by two years of age. Notably, the antibodies that are developed after an infection in early childhood, do not prevent further RSV infections throughout life.

RSV is a common cause of pneumonia but often causes cold-like symptoms. Since the virus was originally discovered in 1956, efforts to successfully manufacture a shot have been thwarted by the virus' complicated molecular structure and safety issues with earlier vaccine attempts.

Earlier this year in July, Britain's health regulator approved GSK's vaccine for RSV. The Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) authorised GSK's shot, called Arexvy, for active immunisation to prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV in adults 60 years and older.

A Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson told The Independent: "The NHS already offers monoclonal antibodies which provide protection against RSV to infants at very high risk. We are developing plans for delivering wider infant and adult RSV programmes in collaboration with UKHSA, NHS England and manufacturers. We will update in due course."

RSV concern in UK: Top doctor 'frustrated' over vaccine delay for babies

Japanese authorities may plan to dissolve the Unification church in the aftermath of former prime minister Shinzo Abe's assassination last year in July, local media reported citing a government source.

The report added that a meeting of the government's religious organisation council was held and after that, a formal request could be filed with the Tokyo District Court as soon as October to dissolve the group if the evidence and testimonies are suitable.

The report also weighed in on the various doubts over dissolution as some government officials want to take any action only after considering the evidence. One issue is that it might not be able to demonstrate that illegal action took place at an organizational level.

The Unification Church would lose its status as a religious corporation and be deprived of tax benefits if it is dissolved. It could still operate as an entity.

Japan launched a probe of the Unification Church after its links to ruling party lawmakers stirred a public uproar and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida wants to demonstrate that the government is making a clean break with the Unification Church with this step.

As quoted by the Asahi Shimbun newspaper, unnamed sources said that the government believes that dissolution would be appropriate given that the church had engaged in "vicious, organised and continued" activities that outweighed the constitutionally guaranteed liberties of religion.

Japan may seek court order to dissolve the Unification church

Russia was "open" to talks on resuming the Black Sea grain export deal, President Vladimir Putin said on Monday, (September 4) just hours after Moscow launched strikes on one of Ukraine's key grain-exporting ports overnight. In televised comments alongside Erdogan, Putin said: "I know you intend to raise the issue of the grain deal. We are open to negotiations on this issue."

In July, Russia decided to scrap the deal brokered by the United Nations and Turkey, which allowed Ukraine to export grain through the Black Sea in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war, which started last year on February 24.

Moscow said it was ready to revive the deal "as soon" as restrictions on its own exports were lifted. Putin wants the West to fulfil a separate memorandum agreed with the US at the same time to facilitate Russian food and fertiliser exports. While Russian exports of food and fertiliser are not subject to Western sanctions, Moscow claims that the restrictions on payments, logistics and insurance have hindered shipments.

"We will be ready to consider the possibility of reviving the grain deal... and we will do it as soon as all the agreements on lifting restrictions on Russian agricultural exports are fully implemented," Putin said at a press conference with Turkish counterpart.

Putin also said that Russia is closing in on the deal to supply food for free to Africa, and the supplies will start in the next two to three weeks.

On the other hand, Erdogan said after talks that Turkey was against alternative proposals to last year's grain agreement. At a joint media appearance with Putin in Sochi, he said: "The alternative proposals brought to the agenda could not offer a sustainable, secure and permanent model based on cooperation between the parties like the Black Sea Initiative."

Earlier on Thursday, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that he had sent Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov "a set of concrete proposals" aimed at reviving the deal. Reconnecting the Russian Agricultural Bank to the SWIFT global payments network is one of Moscow's top requests.

The defence ministry in China has confirmed that a new guided-missile frigate is being developed, which will be part of the navy's expansion and modernisation. The confirmation comes after media reports claimed that the first Type 054B warship has been launched. Photos were also circulated on social media forums showing an advanced version of a navy warship in service — Type 054A.

As quoted by the South China Morning Post (SCMP), Senior Colonel Wu Qian, the ministry spokesperson, said on Thursday (August 31) said it was "a normal arrangement based on the needs of national security and the overall development of naval construction, with the aim of defending national sovereignty, security and development interests and better safeguarding world and regional peace and stability".

Media reports claimed and photos on the Sina Weibo microblogging site also showed that the new vessel at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding docks last week. The SCMP report mentioned that the Shanghai shipyard is a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation. Some reports claimed that it was launched on August 26, but WION can't independently verify it.

What do we know about Type 054B?

According to some analysts, Type 054B is the larger and more advanced version of Type 054A, which currently forms the backbone of the PLAN (People's Liberation Army Navy). In the photos, the hull of the new ship is estimated to be 10 metres longer, it shows that the vessel could accommodate the Z-20 helicopters and drones.

According to reports, the vessel has a 6,000-ton displacement, which is 2,000 tons more than the Type 054A. The Type 054A is expected to be replaced by the new warship in the future, and production of the latter has either ended or is soon to do so.

As quoted by SCMP, Lu Li-shih, who is a former instructor at Taiwan's Naval Academy in Kaohsiung, said the new frigate also appeared to be equipped with the same advanced sonar technology that is used on the Type 055 destroyer.

Type 054B: China confirms new guided-missile frigate is being developed

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is working on its final preparations for the landing on Earth of a precious asteroid sample next month. NASA teams with the OSIRIS-REx mission completed a vital test on Wednesday (August 30) by collecting a mock capsule that had fallen to Earth in the desert west of Salt Lake City at the Utah Test and Training Range of the US Department of Defence.

The process was part of the mission's final major test prior to the arrival of the actual capsule on September 24. The final preparations were a significant test before the actual capsule with its sample of the asteroid Bennu, acquired in space over three years ago.

Nicola Fox, who is the associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington, said: "We are now mere weeks away from receiving a piece of solar system history on Earth, and this successful drop test ensures we're ready."

Fox said, "Pristine material from asteroid Bennu will help shed light on the formation of our solar system 4.5 billion years ago, and perhaps even on how life on Earth began."

This drop test comes after a number of practice runs earlier this spring and summer, including capsule retrieval, spacecraft engineering operations and sample preservation processes.

The OSIRIS-REx crew is now getting ready for the actual delivery with less than four weeks till the spacecraft's arrival.

Dante Lauretta, the principal investigator for OSIRIS-REx at the University of Arizona, Tucson, said: "I am immensely proud of the efforts our team has poured into this endeavor. Just as our meticulous planning and rehearsal prepared us to collect a sample from Bennu, we have honed our skills for sample recovery."

NASA said that an estimated 8.8 ounces of rocky material were taken on board the capsule in 2020 from the surface of the asteroid Bennu.

In the coming years, the sample will be examined by researchers to learn more about the formation of our solar system, our planet, and the genesis of the organic materials that may have given rise to life on Earth.

Rich Burns, the project manager for OSIRIS-REx at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said: "We are now in the final leg of this seven-year journey, and it feels very much like the last few miles of a marathon, with a confluence of emotions like pride and joy coexisting with a determined focus to complete the race well."

NASA making final preparations for asteroid sample delivery by spacecraft this month

Embattled US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas reported a fresh series of free trips from a Texas billionaire Thursday amid rising criticism of the court over benefits coming from private donors.

Thomas, who previously had not reported lavish vacations paid for by real estate tycoon and Republican donor Harlan Crow, said he took free flights on Crow's private jet last year for security reasons after the leak of the high court's controversial decision to overrule abortion rights.

"Because of the increased security risk following the Dobbs opinion leak, the May flights were by private plane for official travel as filer's (Thomas's) security detail recommended noncommercial travel whenever possible," he wrote in the filing.

Thomas's official financial disclosure for 2022 had far more details than in previous years, when the longest serving and most conservative Supreme Court justice failed to reveal a free Bali holiday on Crow's 162-foot (49 meter) yacht and other resort stays hosted and paid for by Crow.

In a series of reports, investigative group ProPublica showed that since the 2000s, Thomas has accepted many free trips and other gifts worth tens of thousands of dollars from Crow as well as other wealthy benefactors.

Crow paid for the private school tuition of Thomas's grandnephew, whom he was raising, and also bought from Thomas the house where Thomas's mother lives, according to ProPublica.

Crow also donated $500,000 to a conservative lobbying group founded by Thomas's wife Ginni Thomas, much of which went to her salary, according to the group.

None of that was reported on previous financial disclosures, based on what Thomas considered a "personal hospitality exemption" -- that gift trips and vacations did not need to be reported.

Thomas noted on the 2022 disclosure form that new rules had been issued on what travel had to be reported, and that he was awaiting guidance on whether he needs to amend disclosures from prior years.

He also gave previously undisclosed details about the transaction that made Crow the owner of his mother's home.

Thomas said Crow bought the Savannah, Georgia home and two neighboring houses from Thomas and other family members in 2014 for $133,000.

Because of the cost of improvements Thomas paid for prior to the sale, Thomas said he incurred a capital loss on the transaction, and so had not reported it.

In a statement Thomas's personal attorney Elliot Berke said any errors in Thomas's previous reports were "stricly inadvertent."

"Justice Thomas has always strived for full transparency and adherence to the law, including with respect to what personal travel needed to be reported," he said.

He blasted the criticisms of Thomas as "ridiculous and dangerous," saying they come from "left wing organizations" which are "motivated by hatred for his judicial philosophy."
